『My wife just turned 30 and had wanted some things from her youth. This was one of her favorite movies so I bought it for her. It came in quickly and was in excellent condition.』

『I don't care if the 1995 film adaption had major changes that didn't resemble the original book written many years ago. Honestly, this is the best film I've ever watched in my lifetime being that it was my first film I watched on TV after its theatrical release.

Recently watching it on TV, the English-language version of the film is extremely well done. I loved Liesel Matthews' portrayal of Sara Crewe. She had a very sweet and gentle tone and attitude throughout the film, not to mention brave too. In my opinion, I hated how much Minchin treated Sara just because of her imaginations and fantasy, as well as abusing her powers. She's just a 10 year old! Plus, she's a contradictory witch because she is a thief herself by claiming all of Sara's possessions without consent. If she suffered "financial losses",she shouldn't go after her wealth. She has to earn it, not steal it, but whatever.

I know what is a real brat and I see one, and its certainly not Sara. Go watch the Spanish dub of 1998's The Parent Trap and you'll see the real definition of a bratty girl. I will always love and enjoy this film no matter what. All of the drama is the reason why I truly enjoy the movie, as well as the sadness present. And btw,

"I am a Princess. ALL girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics... Even if they live in rags... Even if they aren't pretty, OR young, OR smart, they're STILL princesses. ALL of us. Didn't your father ever tell you that? DIDN'T he?"

I consider this line as a memorable quote. Stand up for yourself if you're in a terrible situation. Don't ever let someone dominate over you.』

『The book on which this film is based was my very favorite book growing up. I hated this movie because of the vast discrepancies (starting with the way-off depiction of Sara) and because it fails to provoke the pathos of the original story. I normally love this director, but this film's a dud.

I'd recommend it only to someone who's never read the book and wants a nice, bland family film to watch with their daughters.』

『The humor is not as sophisticated as some of the adult cartoons that are on the air now, so perhaps, Spongebob is more suited to a younger audience. There was a lot of movement in the animation, making it a little more action orientated as well.』

『I'll admit it: I'm a Spongebob junkie. I've seen almost all of the episodes, multiple times. I saw this movie when it came out in theatres with a fellow Spongebob freak. Gosh, we were like 15 and we did not even care.

That being said, I did not care for this movie. The writers make great 12-minute episodes, but apparently nothing good comes from trying to make longer plots. It also has some disturbing parts for younger kids, so I don't even let my niece watch it when it comes on TV. She's a big fan of the episodes as well.

All in all, stick with the original shows.』

『This video is appropriate for people who have no interest in a yoga workout whatsoever. It is slow, ineffective, and short. More time is spent reading the warnings than doing any real yoga. The am portion is so slow it will put you right back to sleep. Save your money! Buy a real yoga video!』

『When I cannot get to a Yoga class this short (20 minute) tape is very helpful.
I was especially pleased to be able to get a VCR tape since I don't have a DVD
player in my room.
I like the AM Yoga, but found the PM Yoga tape too difficult for me.』

『These videos each have their strong points, and I've used and enjoy them both. The biggest flaw is that, as a set, they are so out of balance with each other. As other reviewers have mentioned, the A.M. video is substantially easier than the P.M., so folks who want a good workout dislike the first, and those who are a bit out of shape dislike the second.

I use the A.M. when I feel like I need something easy and gentle, and when I lapse in practicing yoga for a while, this is invariably the tape I come back to, to get me going again. (I move on to the Yoga for Energy DVD in this Gaiam/Yoga Journal series, once I loosen up again, though.)

The P.M. video just about killed me when I first tried it. However, the moment when all that vigorous stretching is finished, and you finally go into relaxation feels sooo good. (Like the old joke: "Why are you hitting yourself?""Because it feels so good when I stop!") So, I come back to this tape, when I have time in the afternoon. And I've improved enough so that the poses don't seem too difficult now, but they still push me to my limit before that golden moment of relaxation.』

『The 1939 film "Juarez" depicts the debacle of the French attempt to establish hegemony in Mexico under the auspices of Maximilian von Habsburg. The unlikely combination of characters involved in the fiasco shows that once again truth is stranger than fiction. Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, styling himself as Emperor of the French, was the master manipulator of the affair which sent the Austrian Archduke Maximilian to his doom. Maximilian's consort was the intelligent and mercurial Charlotte (Carlota) of Belgium, a granddaughter of Louis-Philippe, the Citizen-King. Although "Juarez" is a simplification of an extremely complicated series of events, it brings to life the historical reality of such fascinating characters coming together.

I personally think that the film was misnamed; it should have been called "Carlota," since Bette Davis turned her supporting role as the Empress of Mexico into the heart and soul of the drama. In typical Bette fashion, she upstages everyone else, including the great Paul Muni as Benito Juarez. Brian Aherne is perfection as the noble, charming and romantic Maximilian, the most hapless of Habsburgs, and one of the most liberal, too. The film does not show his marital infidelities, but it does play up the irony that Maximilian's reforms were similar to those proposed by Juarez. This did not endear the Emperor to the wealthy landowners and he lost their support. The real struggles of Maximilian and Carlota with their childlessness is poignantly portrayed, as is their genuine horror when they realize that they have been duped by Napoleon III. Maximilian perceives that the imperial Mexico of his dreams is nothing but a cruel charade, and that the original plebiscite that brought him there had been rigged. Nevertheless, he and Carlota have fallen in love with their new country and have come to identify so deeply with Mexico's agonies that there is no turning back.

The gradual disintegration of Carlota's sanity is perhaps one of Bette's greatest achievements as an actress. Carlota's breakdown at the Tuileries is a heartrending scene, with Bette authentically capturing the mannerisms of a person descending into insanity. In actuality, Carlota's complete psychological collapse occurred not at the Tuileries but in Rome, where Pope Pius IX sighed: "Nothing is spared me in this life, now a woman has to go mad in the Vatican." The Empress never saw her husband again; he was shot by order of Juarez, while Carlota spent the next sixty years secluded in a Belgian castle. As for Mexico, in years to come the Church would be persecuted there; many of the faithful would be martyred.

The scene of the most stunning beauty is one earlier in "Juarez" where Carlota in black is praying at the foot of the statue of Our Lady. The prostrate Empress begs to have a child, and implores the success of the Mexican enterprise, surrounded by the votive candles, with darkness hovering beyond the small sphere of light. Her posture of supplication communicates a total oblation of self to the will of God. Once again it is demonstrated that sometimes God chooses not to save a people or a nation through political means. Rather, He intends to sanctify in the crucible of sacrifice.』

(Better than expected.)

『I purchased this film because of the score by Erich Korngold, but, acknowledging what often happens with Hollywood biopics, I came to be moved by the film itself. Specifically, because it represents two men originally motivated, given the time, by worthy ideals, but who become antagonists through events and machinations of others beyond their control. Apart from any question of historical accuracy, "Juarez" becomes a political drama in the spirit of a Greek tragedy. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Brian Aherne in a role (Maximillian) quite different from those in which I saw him when I was a child.』

(Great Music, Fine Film)

『I purchased this video (used--why no DVD yet?)largely because of my love for Erich Wolfgang Korngold as a composer. I had very little interest in the film per se. The music is, as expected, absolutely wonderful. But the film it accompanies is also quite compelling. Its one great drawback is the performance of Paul Muni as Juarez. Muni--a powerful actor whom I greatly admire--seems almost completely strait-jacketed by the director's conception of Juarez. Juarez is "the Mexican Lincoln", and thus is portrayed with the same kind of quasi-sainthood and faux-holiness that Hollywood has almost always bestowed on Lincoln. (Oddly enough, Muni looks very much like the Lincoln of "Birth of a Nation" 24 years earlier. But when he moves--which isn't very often, since we usually see him at his desk--he bears an unfortunate resemblance to another silent film icon--the Golem!) One senses that Muni simply wasn't given any room to breathe in this film. One longs, almost prays for some scenery chewing--anything to show that Juarez is human! But apparently saints do not chew scenery.
Bette Davis, however, does chew scenery in her scene with Napoleon III, and quite admirably! All the other performances are quite fine, too. Even though the film is entitled "Juarez", we can be thankful that minimal screen time is wasted on Muni's plaster saint! From the viewpoint of modern sensibilities, it should be pointed out that this film is very enlightened in its portrayal of Hispanic culture. Frito Bandito/Speedy Gonzalez type stereotyping is minimal. (Perhaps even less than in Viva Zapata, made 13 years later). The use of Anglo actors to portray Mexicans was, of course, very common at the time. But for a film made in 1939, it comes across as quite sensitive. The year 1939 is regarded as the Wonderyear of American film. And, despite the ghastly portrayal of the title character, Juarez can proudly stand with the other distinguished alumni of that incredible year!』

(Juarez: Impresses as History But Not as Drama)

『The problem with enjoying an historical biopic like JUAREZ is that director William Dieterle tried too hard to pass off over the top acting as reasonably correct historical drama. Paul Muni had previously established himself as king of the biopics (bios of Louis Pasteur and Emil Zola), and Dieterle figured that Muni could carry the picture as Benito Juarez, the Indian mestizo who rose from the ashes to become President of Mexico. This is one of Muni's most embarassing performances. If you look carefully, he seems to have his eyes closed in nearly every scene as he tries vainly to portray Juarez as a dedicated revolutionary but instead comes off as a stiff-faced and even stiffer-laced fount of moralistic platitudes. Muni speaks in a stultifying monotone as he sounds like a poltically correct pre 2005 Master Po, who thinks all his fellow actors are all named Grasshoppper. It is not difficult for Brian Aherne as Emperor Maximilliano to steal the movie as the noble if misguided puppet that Louis Napoleon (Claude Raines) installed into power in a fraudulent election. Aherne as Maximilliano is impossibly saintly and courageous as he learns the truth of his origins of power. Surprisingly, it is Muni who comes off as a prudish leader and Aherne who emerges as a figure of real dignity and sympathy. I found myself rooting for Aherne even though I knew that it would be Muni who would emerge as the one who would order the execution of the other. It took Brando more than twenty years later in VIVA ZAPATA to show how a peasant leader of the peons could rouse the Mexican rabble and still hold the viewers' interest with all the political intiguing that must have accompanied each revolt. Muni's uncharacteristic sleepwalking through the titular role forces the audience to pay more attention to the supposed second string with predictably boring consequences for all concerned.』

(Classic historical flick)

『The incomparable Paul Muni in not one of his most memorable roles, stills casts a formidable shadow playing a stoic and mostly taciturn deposed president of the Mexican republic Benito Juarez. The French led by the sleazy and devious emperor Louis Napolean played by the talented Claude Rains have conquered Mexico at the time of the Civil War. Rains installs the naive archduke Maximilian von Habsburg played by a stylishly coiffed Brian Aherne, to rule as emperor of Mexico aided by his pop eyed wife Carlotta played by the immortal Bette Davis. He dupes them into believing that his assention to the throne has been mandated by the natives of the land.

This is a recipe for disaster as the populace is solidly behind the democracy loving Juarez. Once the French withdraw their support of Maximilian by removing their troops, his rule is doomed.

The movie while possessing an all star cast lacks the fiery drama that the portrayal of this extremely tumultuous chapter of world history demands. The venerable Muni often appears wooden and emotionless in his portrayal of Juarez. John Garfield as General Diaz, Gail Sondergaard as Empress Eugenie and Gilbert Roland as Colonel Lopez give excellent performances in supporting roles.』

『As always, this is a great movie! I use a playstation 3 to watch my Blu Ray's! The picture quality is just slightly better than what it was shot in, and the audio is still in a mono format, but it is still a great movie! I think the picture keeps it true to it's roots and give it that oldies feel, so they were good in not doing much to it! However, I do feel the audio could have been cleaned up and enhanced more. I will enjoy my blu ray Christmas Story!』

(This Story Is Indeed Deserving of a "Major Award"!!)

『As I've grown in maturity, my tastes have changed in many respects. For most of my adult life my favorite Christmas story has been Charles Dickens classic scenario "A Christmas Carol" written in 1843 and which still remains as one of my favorite Christmas classics. In fact the movie rendition by Alastair Sim is indeed a Christmas ritual to be seen by all. With the last 20 years I've changed my mind as to the ultimate "Christmas Story".
Up front, I must confess that this classic movie was indeed shot and is deeply ensconced into the very fabric of Cleveland culture. The very house in the movie scenes is now a museum on the near west side of Cleveland. The very mention of "The Higbee Company" issues the very essence of "A Christmas Story". When these scenes were shot in January of 1983, I remember the cold sweeping winds coming off Lake Erie putting Northeast Ohio in a deep freeze.
The story itself remains a classic in American culture. Set in the fictional city of Hohman, Indiana all the dreams and culture of pre-World War II America presents itself. In fact from a historical point of view the Depression was in fact over and America, not at war, was in the beginnings of unprecedented prosperity. The actual beginning of life in America as it should be. In fact Ralphie experienced life on the upswing.
The fact of this pre-adolescent receiving a treasured Christmas present shows the rise of the middle class which has gone unabated since. The Christmas morning scene in which the "Old Man" stated that he got a BB gun at Ralphie's age shows the end of the depression and the start of the "good times". However as we watch this movie we can see that discipline 7 decades ago was very real. Life was indeed more structured and disciplined. The family not only ate their evening meals together, they also ate their breakfasts as a family unit. Expectations were tempered and hoped for. Life was easier but held more accountable. Life was simple and fraught with troubles but in the end, life had meaning and purpose.
This story shows us a piece of Americana never to be seen again. Family life as shown in this movie no longer exists which to me represents the sad passing of an institution which is in desperate need in our 21st century way of life. It's really no wonder why this story runs a 24 hour Christmas marathon each year. This is the big screen equivalent of a Norman Rockwell painting representing what American life was.

『I love that movie, never miss an opportunity to see it again at Christmas. The script is perfect, and the constant humor makes it a delight compared to overly sentimental stories. It is one of the only movies where a child is represented with the mind of a child. The little guy is obsessed with getting a BB-gun for Christmas and nothing else counts. He thinks like a child: he is not made cute for our benefit.

『As a great fan of the books I was delighted to find that the actors chosen to play the main roles were perfect choices. The film makers added a character of their own but the hairdresser is written in the style of Alexander McCall Smith and is entertaining. When I ordered I thought I was simply ordering the first, movie length film. It seemed a bit expensive but I hoped it would be worth it. When it arrived I found it was the whole first series of 7 episodes plus special features. I think it was great value and one of those classics I will enjoy over and over again.』
