Yes, 5 star video, but unfortunately, they lose 4 stars for forcing us to watch a commercial for the Childrens Television Workshop at the start of the video. (My 2 year old son L-O-V-E-S this DVD! So interactive and fun!) 『My 2 year old already loves Blues Clues but this one, he is glued to for the entire run time of the DVD. He already knows all shapes and colors but this has so many more ways for him to really learn more about them. This video is a must for any child 1-3. I love hearing him repeat every shape and color back to the tv. I bought this one with the Alphabet Power and what a pair of awesome DVD's. I had already loved Blues Clues with my 13 year old twins when they were his age but I love it even more now. I know they are older shows but this one really seems to get my lil guys attention and is really broadening his color and shape recognition and skills. The price was awesome too! I'd rather they watch things above their level than below, like Baby Einstein products. (Very disappointed with those, but that's another story...). Very educational and they try to encourage active feedback from the kids as they watch.

I love the variety of animals (not all of them are commonly known), environments, and the photography footage is outstanding! My daughter laughs out loud at the humor expressed by the puppets. Baby McDonald and Baby Noah are her favorites as an older baby. I have a great love for animals and I am happy to see my daughter already showing the same. The Night They Saved Christmas is an unusual but fun Christmas movie. It's very enjoyable, a bit silly, and at the same time kind of gray and grim mixed with bright and festive.
The gray and grim part comes from the "real" world where the adventure starts, an oil company compound in the arctic. Everything is covered with snow and though Christmas lights are up, things do look rather bleak. Also adding to the atmosphere is the CEO of the company, Mister Murdoch played by Mason Williams, who does a good job of being a tough as nails boss.
But then in comes an elf, Ed, played by Paul Williams. And he invites the family to the North Pole to visit Santa Claus. Santa is concerned that the oil company, dynamiting for oil, will damage and in fact destroy North Pole City, ending Christmas forever.
One odd thing is that the closer the family gets to North Pole City, the more the evidence mounts that Santa is real, the more the family thinks they're part of some ridiculously elaborate hoax or prank.
The kids in the story are a bit silly, and not particularly enjoyable at first, but they do a nice job of being amazed by Santa once they realize he is a real person. Jacqline Smith is wonderful as the mother and Art Carney does an excellent job as Santa Claus; in fact he totally carries the movie.
The Night They Saved Christmas has a few decent special effects, but I'm pretty sure it was a Made-For-TV Movie. But the movie also has some superb ideas, two in particular I must mention.
One is they attempt to explain many of the Questions about Santa with advanced technology. How does Santa get into houses with small chimneys, or no chimneys? He uses a teleporter on the side of his sleigh. Santa uses storage satellites full of toys so that he doesn't have to return to the North Pole all the time for each load. And how does Santa visit every home in one night? He uses a strange device to slow down time, giving him plenty of time to do it all in one night. "Based on Einstein's Theory of Relativity. It's all Greek to me though, very complex."
And the other idea done very well is that Santa explains that he's been Santa for hundreds of years. He mentions delivering to London during the Battle of Britain. He had his reindeer before Clement Moore wrote "The Night Before Christmas" - he named his reindeer after the poem because he liked it so much. In his den are some of the best selling toy from the 1800s. Very nicely done and an awesome concept I have not seen in any other Christmas movie.
When Santa first makes his appearance he does so with a wonderful speech. The elfs are singing Jingle Bells and in comes Santa. "I'm going to tell you one more time. Sing anything you want. White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. But no more Jingle Bells!" He's been hearing it for centuries and it does wear on the nerves.
Well worth a look! 』

When they outgrew them, I sold them in a garage sale. Enter baby #5, a total surprise. When I decided to re-buy these for him, I discovered they were no longer available. VHS copies are easy to come by used, but used DVDs cost a fortune. I'm buying one at a time over a period of a few months so as not to break the bank. Worth every penny, though. We don't watch television around here, but my 2 year old is spellbound every time I turn this on. He's recognizing all of his letters, too, which makes me feel better about turning this video every now and again.』

(Enjoyable And Educational) 『I recently purchased the following videos: Best ABC Video, Best Counting Video, Best Learning Songs, Best Silly Stories&Songs, Best Busy People. These videos are all about 15-20 years old (release date) and I had my reservations as to whether my 3 year old would like them, as he is very stuck on his LeapFrog letter and words videos (which I also love). When I first viewed all of these, I realized that they are made with very simple animation, similar to when I was young. These videos are extremely charming and sweet. My son instantly loved them and has asked to view them repeatedly. It was nice to have a video with the actual alphabet song, as the LeapFrog letter factory does not have it. The counting video is also helpful in that it counts to 20 rather than 10 as other videos do. He enjoys the silly stories and laughs at all the videos. It is nice to know that kids can still enjoy classics such as these. I am very pleased with them. I also paid less than $1 or $2 for each of them (plus shipping). Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Maybe You Don't Want to Meet Daddy) 『The big day has finally arrived. The entire kingdom has turned out for Aladdin (Scott Weinger) and Jasmine's (Linda Larkin) wedding. Thanks to the Genie (Robin Williams), it looks to be a spectacular day.
But then tragedy strikes. The 40 Thieves attack the wedding and try to steal just one present. Yes, that's right. But that present turns out to be an oracle that will answer one question. And through that oracle, Aladdin learns that his father is still alive.
What he doesn't realize is that his father, Cassim (John Rhys-Davies), is the leader of the thieves. The family reunion pits Aladdin against Sa'luk (Jerry Orbach) who isn't happy with the way that Cassim has been running the gang. How will Jasmine react to the identity of Aladdin's father? Can Aladdin reform his dad? And how many different Disney movies can Robin Williams reference?
This movie was better then I remembered. Having Robin Williams back as the voice of Genie really made a huge difference. And his many Disney references absolutely cracked me up. The story moved along fairly quickly, when it wasn't sabotaged by the songs. While some of the songs were fun in the last one, here they are all boring. They should have taken them out and just let the movie be that much shorter.
This is still only an average follow up to a great film. But fans of the original will enjoy it, and it will keep kids entertained.』
(Suprising) 『All the Disney DTV sequels--or, as we sometimes refer to them in our homes, "cheap-quels"--have been bad. Or horrible. My problem with most of them is not actually with the movie itself, but with the all-but-inevitable leeching off of the original. Continuing a story that's already resolved or telling the same story as the first one are the M.O. for your average cheapquel--not remotely entertaining, just a ploy to make money
The surprising thing about this movie is the fact that it ISN'T your average cheapquel. There may be an element of nostalgia in this review, but watching it again recently, I was surprised at how much of it still actually stood up as a decent movie, with actual quality in it. Despite the unavoidable stealing from the previous movies, this one actually DOES present some new material--and much of the story told is very creative and interesting. The new characters add a dimension to the old characters and the world that they inhabit, rather than simply ripping off or rehashing the first or second movie. The forty thieves and Caseem are interesting with their individual ways of fighting and talking. The Vanishing Isle is especially amazing, coming in a DTV feature, and the Oracle, despite some flaws, has an amazingly cool design and quality effects surrounding it. That sort of thought in character and design is exactly the kind of thing that the original Disney encouraged. Also, this movie didn't contradict already-existing characters' traits; this is another of my pet peeves. Aladdin was clearly himself, with no made-up flaws or strengths added to him--the same goes for the Genie and even Jasmine, Abu, Carpet, and Iago. (The only exception was Jasmine's sudden expertise in karate, but I suppose this was because it was the 90's, when every female was a black-belt--no matter their background or age.)
The fact that they made the movie stand (relatively) alone is a great tribute to the makers as well. The original plan was to use a character from the TV show, Mozenrath, and reveal him to be Aladdin's brother. The fact that they had the confidence in their own storytelling abilities to scrap that plan and go with introducing Aladdin's father made the film much more interesting, opening up more possibilities for the story and the characters. Many of the sequences in the film are amazingly creative--again, see the Vanishing Isle sequence--and many of them are actually moving--the Challenge is surprisingly gripping, with effects like rim lighting and shadows.
The animation, all in all, is better than your average TV show--which is what the animators were used to working on. The music, especially the score, performs surprisingly well for what its status in a cheapquel movie would entail. The voices, especially Caseem, Saluk, and of course the Genie (Robin Williams is back!) gave the movie, again, something new.
All in all, this movie is surprisingly well done, in every sense. Though not feature quality, it's the only one of its kind that seems to get past being the sequel to a very successful movie, offering new material and creative ideas. For what it should have been, it is amazingly good. I'd at least give it a rent, if not a buy--even if it does drift to the back of your video drawer, it's a pleasant surprise to pull out on a rainy day. 』
(Worthy of the Original) 『Aladdin and the King of Thieves is a great film. The best character is Aladdin's long-lost father - Cassim, the leader of the legendary forty thieves. A little Temple of Doom, a little swashbuckling, a little Sinbad, great costume designs, a lot of action and adventure, and a surprisingly thoughtful script. A must-have for Disney and Aladdin fans.
The story begins as Al and Jasime prepare to be wed. The wedding is interrupted by the mysterious King of Thieves, after a treasure in Jasmine's wedding gifts. Aladdin seeks to have a relationship with his father, but how can he if their lifestyles are so different? Or are they really the same? Like real life, nothing is cut-and-dry or simple about this reunion. Really well-done, and Robin Williams provides great comic relief. I laughed out loud a couple of times at some references to other Disney characters. "Pocahontas!"』
(Robin Williams is Back In The Blue!) 『This DTV sequel of Aladdin would not have been as great without the talents of Robin Williams. The animation is very DTV-ish, with the exception of the Vanishing Isle sequence. The music is fair, but does not capture the spirit of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman or Tim Rice's music. The story is about Aladdin and Jasmine getting married. During the ceremony, a band of forty thieves bust in. The king of thieves is actually Aladdin's long lost dad, Kasim [John Rhyes Davies of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy]. The villain here is Saluk, played by the late Jerry Orbachs, who you probably know from Law&Order and Beauty and the Beast. Robin Williams brings back all his wackiness and impersonations, including Forest Gump, Woody Allen, a funny spoof of the Osmonds.[''Boys! Come out here and see what's happening!''], Pumbaa, Mickey Mouse, and Rambo. The funniest scenes are when Genie is trying to cheer up Jasmine and a wild scene in The Vanishing Isle.』

I have to say that it totally ruined the film for me and my wife, as this was such an integral part of the emotions that this film can evoke. I do have this film on normal DVD and I compared the two, just to be sure. I will be returning this copy to Amazon, and will let you know what the outcome is. Fair enough. Hollywood has always been mostly about straightforward entertainment, right?
Well, yes and no.
In the days of classic Hollywood cinema, audiences could feel good by identifying with John Wayne's eternal outsider, Humphrey Bogart's code of honor, Scarlett O'Hara's astonishing persistence, and Fred Astaire's grace-- a wide variety of human characteristics-- all of which-- in their complexity-- somehow made audiences of the time feel better they were. Maybe because they enlarged the scope of what was felt to be human.
In other words, American consumers had the humility to identify with characters bigger, braver, and more foolish than they were themselves. Characters who suffered and learned. This was, after all, the reason people exposed themselves to drama from the time of the Greeks.
In Wal-Mart America, however, audiences don't want to get their hair messed up. Characters like Scarlett and Sam Spade seem too far from home for most of us. We want to identify with characters like Forrest Gump, who gets it all without even trying. Or Good Will Hunting, the world's greatest street fighter, legal eagle, nuclear physicist, sleuth, lover, and who knows what else. And all he needed to get the girl was Robin Williams weeping over him and uttering the magic words: "You're really good!"
Unlike Sam Spade, Scarlett O'Hara, Shane, or Terry Malloy, Forrest and Will-- the heroes for the Wal-Mart American-- don't really learn through suffering. They don't have to: they're perfect just the way they are. The only thing wrong in their worlds is that everybody else didn't know how perfect they were before they made the movie. And by buying a ticket, the audience gets to take part in the canonization...of their own egos.
In other words, the FORREST GUMP American is a weak, selfish, shallow, lazy narcissist, unable to bend his/her imagination to identify with characters who are flawed- and thus actually human. In other words, the modern American would reject anything remotely human-- if somehow it got past the guards at the entrance to the shopping mall.
Naturally the Wal-Mart American will call a movie "good" if it allows them to remain in the bubble of their shallowness. Otherwise, it's "weird."
I guess that's why Wal-Mart doesn't have a big selection of real books, or jazz, or classical music. Or why Shakespeare, and Mark Twain, and Thomas Jefferson are excluded from the minds of the worst generation in the history of the country. Hunter Thompson called them a "generation of swine" and I'd be inclined to agree.
Forrest Gump is the Moby Dick of this generation. It is the white whale of their shallowness, and, I'm afraid, it will take us all to the bottom of the ocean.
Someday-- and maybe soon-- historians (perhaps in China, India, and Brazil-- countries where young people actually go to school to learn) will view movies like this as a symptom of a culture in intellectual--and moral-- freefall. They will say, that was when American stopped being a leader-- and started its descent. (Of course, even if the U.S.A. morphs into a state of slave-workers for a future Chinese Empire, the workers drones will undoubtedly be told they are still number one, and they will go through life believing it.)
Meanwhile, the future historians will look at Forrest in the pantheon of great characters in literature (Lear, Hamlet, Ahab...Finn, Gump) and marvel at the capacity of the human being to rise--- and to fall.
Forrest isn't, in fact, a character at all-- he's a ball of tricks designed to lure the audience's most infantile self inside.
This is fascism as consumer culture. It doesn't matter how technically impressive the movie is, or that the scene where Forrest runs can make anybody cry. This is the American version of "Triumph of the Will," the moment when it became practically illegal to have a mind.
By the way, Robert Zemeckis' former writing partner, Bob Gale, co-creator of the BACK TO THE FUTURE series (the only films Bob Zemeckis should truly be proud of, except for USED CARS) accused Zemeckis of cynicism when he made FORREST GUMP. Zemeckis claims he doesn't understand the accusation, and I believe him. I don't think he understands what cynicism is, or how this film so perfectly embodies it. And that puts him into the 95% of America that hasn't the slightest idea what it means actually to think. And how criminal it is not to. Especially when you have the power.
To those of you who are offended by this comment, why not stop to consider that maybe living a shallow life is even worse than being offended. In any case, history will judge you far more harshly than one writer possibly could. Why not try to rouse yourselves from your slumber and rebel against this and all the other big lies that have pacified you into a sub-human state. (Do you really want to spend your life like those butterballs on the cruise space ship in WALL-E?)』

Forrest Gump mixes so many styles of film in one movie it is incredible. It is a comedy, drama, war movie, love story, one of spiritual enlightenment, but most importantly it is about a life. We all walk this earth and from the beginning of our life, we grow, we laugh and love, we have pain and heartache, and eventually we die. How will others remember us? How in a positive way have we touched others during our life?
The Blu-Ray version of this film is like watching it again for the first time. There are little things in the background that stand-out unlike the regular version. The battle scene is visually striking.
In the play Hamlet, Hamlet is in the graveyard and comes across Yorrick's skeleton. Yorrick was the king's jester and Hamlet spent a great time with him when he was younger. As he holds his skull, he speaks the lines, "My gorge rises at it (his skull)" meaning his throat rises at it. I always took this to mean his spirit was moved to the point of being choked up! There are quite a few scenes in this film that bring me to that point. Do yourself a favor and purchase the DVD because there's NO reason at all to pick this up over the DVD: same picture quality!
As for the actual movie, if you're a fan of the show, you'll absolutely love this. My only problem is it's not much longer than 2 episodes, but it's very well worth it. Throwing rocks at trains, screwed over business partners, omni bot, stolen presents, old friends in a rut, designer hand bags full of Cheetos, Lamborginis, Frank sewed into a couch, and Charlie 'pounding off' are just a fraction of this hilarious Christmas special. The only problem we had with this product was that we had limited hard disk memory and had to acquire some more. And I have probably created more than a 100 DVDs by now.

(Great software and hardware) 『I bought this about 2 weeks back and I love this product. I already converted nearly 20 of my VHS and miniDVs to DVD. There are 3 software applications given along with this... which I think is a bargain. I love the Arcsoft ShowBiz product. I was able to edit my video, set chapters, backgrounds on the DVD tilte page etc. I have not tried adding any audio yet. I like to keep the original talk/chatter on my home videos. It's kinda fun to hear those later.
As for the negatives and the reason I only gave 4 stars is that the direct transfer software does not seem to work correctly, at times. I set the capture time to 1.5 hours and it wrote only .5 hours of video to disk although I saw that the complete video was captured from tape. I don't know what went wrong and lost couple of disks because of this. Another reason I gave only 4 stars is that the backup software (not related to DVD conversion) does not seem to work well with 1.1 USB ports.
The installation instructions could have been better.
Another reviewer mentioned that they had problems with no video signal after a couple of conversions. Well, I had the same problem and tried changing the cables a bit and figured out that the USB cable was defective. Replaced with a new USB cable with gold plated edges and it worked fine.
Over all, I am pleased with product.』

He was constantly talking about how great it would be to have a Zathura game of his own. When he opened it, he was over the moon excited. It's not the sturdiest of games and I know many other reviewers were disappointed that the game wasn't more like the one in the movie. Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (THE BOX: UNCANNY STORIES BY RICHARD MATHESON) 『Having never read any of the writings of the classic horror great Richard Matheson, I was delighted to discover the relatively new release of The Box: Uncanny Stories to tie in with the movie adaptation of the short story "Button, Button." The collection unsurprisingly kicks off with the aforementioned story offering an average American married couple the opportunity to win a large sum of money if they push this one button. The catch is that whoever presses the button will know that someone will die, though it will be someone they don't care about. I'm not sure how they've made a feature length movie out of this, but the story nevertheless forces one to question one's moral compass to see if it's pointing in the right direction. At the end there's a wonderful twist that is a signature of most of the stories in this collection. This story was also adapted as an episode for The Twilight Zone, as was another story in the collection, "Mute."
The stories are not just entertaining, but force one to think about their own lives and how they live them day to day; what choices would they make? "Girl of my Dreams" is the story of a woman who has the ability to see when people will die and the man who uses her to blackmail them for exorbitant amounts of money. "Dying Room Only": a couple who stop at a gas station, but when the husband goes into the bathroom and never comes out, things take a turn for the worse. One of the most interesting stories in the collection is "Creeping Terror," all about Los Angeles being a living city that begins to send its roots into cities throughout the country, causing citrus and palm trees to grow in places where it isn't possible, as people begin getting fast cars, dressing like Hollywood stars, and tanning.
Whether you're looking for some great works by Matheson, looking for a new writer, or have a penchant for short story collections; you will thoroughly enjoy The Box: Uncanny Stories. And the thing I always like about short story collections is if you don't like the story you're reading, then just skip to the next one!

`Button, Button': A couple receives a strange box. If they push the button, someone they do not know will die--and they will get a large sum of money. [A good psychological concept, this story does not go beyond a basic set up to really challenge the characters or readers. The ending is a question that leads to more questions...not about our thoughts, but about what the author does not tell us about the characters.] (2)
`Girl of My Dreams': Carrie sees things in her dreams. Greg uses this knowledge to his advantage. [The ending is perfect, but getting there is slightly awkward.] (4)
`Dying Room Only': A couple stops at a café, where the husband disappears. [The story works by making us question what is going on. But it fails because it feels more like the end of a story. What led the couple into this situation?] (3)
`A Flourish of Strumpets': What would you do if an escort service advertised by coming to your door and handing out calling cards? [The story ends in the middle of everything--leaving us to presume whatever we please.] (2)
`No Such Thing as a Vampire': A woman is weak from blood loss. The superstitious community suspects vampires--since there are the tell-tale puncture wounds on her neck. [This story introduces an important character way too late and rushes to a good, but forced conclusion.] (3)
`Pattern of Survival': A man finishes writing a story and mails it to be published. [I found no point to this story. I cannot say anything else because I do not want to give anything away--after all, someone else might enjoy it.] (1)
`Mute': The sheriff and his wife take care of a boy who lost his parents in a fire. They and a local teacher are distraught by the fact that he cannot speak. [`Mute' misses a perfect score because it fails to provide solid transitions between the past and present. The ending works, but the climax feels contrived.] (4)
`The Creeping Terror': Presented as a student thesis, the story tells how one city becomes very powerful. [This story is still relevant today, even though it is inconclusive. `The Creeping Terror' loses a point because the ending contradicts (at least seemingly) something stated in a previous paragraph.] (4)
`Shock Wave': An old church organ seems to come alive--at least to its player. [There is a point to this story, and what really happens is explained...but most people will miss it.] (1)
`Clothes Make the Man': People always judge each other by what they wear. Some people think what they wear defines them. [This story provides an interesting twist to this old saying. Unfortunately, the ending provides more confusion than necessary...it actually feels like the middle of a story. What led to this? What happened next?] (4)
`The Jazz Machine': What would we do if someone had a machine that could interpret what we play on an instrument? [This is the creepiest story in the collection. It makes a point that should hit home for everyone. The only flaw is that it is unnecessarily written in poetic form. I will let that pass.] (5)
`Tis the Season to Be Jelly': A family has dinner while discussing the son's plan to get married. [The imagery is great; I could see this being a graphic novel. But I am not sure what the story is really about. I imagine this tale taking place after a nuclear blast...people are decaying, but still determined to reestablish a way of life. At the same time, I saw it taking place just before amoebas evolved into the next step of evolution.] (2)

I read the first story, which the movie, The Box is based on called Button, Button and loved it. It is a tale of ethics vs. greed as a married couple possesses a device in which each time they press a button they receive $50,000, but a stranger dies. The other short stories in the book are all excellent and many have a Twilight Zone feel to them. I highly recommend this book.』 『

(A Hedonist Finds Meaning in Life) 『This is a very good book. It is about a young hedonist who, on the surface of things, has everything. The truth, however, is that he really has nothing. His life is without value; he is running away, immersing himself in a group of shallow friends, shallow women, drugs, and a job he despises. Ultimately, he confronts himself and begins a relationship with a real woman of depth. He also returns to the memory of his mother, confronting both her death and his love for her.』
(Bright Lights - A worthy read) 『Many others have stated how well Mr. McInerney employed the second person in this book. It was refreshing to see a good usage of that often-ignored perspective. There were some great lines ("Tad was one of those guys who was always on the way, but rarely arrived" or "She had freckles. I didn't know they still made them."). Overall, the book was a drug-induced exercise in addiction and loss. We are led most of the book to believe his wife's abandonment of him (she runs off to France) is the main cause of his fall from grace. We learn toward the end it was probably his mother's prolonged illness and finally death from cancer. But these are experiences which have shaped his life, and would not be possible if the seed had not been planted long ago for the protagonist to try to escape whenever possible. He runs from his feels for Amanda, he runs from his feelings for his mother, he runs (literally) from his brother Michael when he comes to visit. Coke, sleepless nights, juvenile pranks and the friends he keeps all point toward an escapist attitude that is inherent in the protagonist and I believe transcends the time and setting of the book. Mr. McInerney keeps us grounded in 1980's NYC, but the problems his character faces could be traded for the troubles of any young man in any city at any time. I enjoyed the book and I recommend it as an easy, entertaining read.』
(McInerney: Life's a bitch and then you cry !) 『Read the book after watching the movie again (starring Michael J. Fox). Fox's acting added-value to the book. The book is written in the third person, with a detached point of reference. The theme -- that grief and loss are not easily overcome -- is everyman.
After losing his mother to cancer and being sexually abandoned by his model-wife that he had brought to New York from the midwest, the protagonist stays high on cocaine and indulges in the 1980s New York party scene in his effort to find some human warmth, compassion, and love. It's a lost cause though, nothing works out -- there's no easy way.
As the story progresses he meets up with his brother and comes to understand it all -- that life is an experience that cannot be easily understood, manipulated or controlled. Life can only be confronted and dealt with.
I can't help but wonder if McInerny read the opening lines of M. Scott Peck's classic work, "The Road Less Traveled," and started writing -- you know: "Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it." McInerny has his character learn that life is difficult, and there isn't really an easy way to make it easier. But, unlike Peck -- whose writings convey worthy wisdom -- McInerney has his character try to teach readers: Life's a bitch and then you cry...
