(My Favorite exercise DVD)
『This is a great dvd, there are 3 levels and I alternate between each level depending on how I am feeling that day. I've been doing this one about 3 months and I still sweat no matter which level I choose to do. I like this because she incorporates cardio and strength in about 20 minutes and at the end you feel like you got a great workout in. I alternate between about 6 dvds and this one will definitely stay in my rotation.

I am 26 and pretty active - an hour on the elliptical several times a week, yoga, kickboxing, etc. I popped in the DVD with plenty of cocky 26-yr old attitude, confident that this would be a piece of cake. After the first circuit, I was a little wobbly in the legs. By the end of the video, I could barely walk from my living room to the bathroom to take a shower. I was soaked in sweat and completely spent. I had to take several "days off" since my leg muscles were so sore. It is an AMAZING workout. Tough, for sure, but as Jillian herself says, if you want to only work out for 20 minutes a day, you have to make it count.』

『A spectacular boxed set of the Adventures of Dorothy and company in "The Wizard of Oz." Extras galore included. Highly recommended for children and adults of all ages!』

(A splendid updating on Blu-ray of one of the all-time classics)
『I give the new Blu-ray five stars despite being a little irritated with the lack of an option to buy a nice, single disc version of hte Blu-ray. I got all of the set through Netflix and saw it that way. I would very much like to won THE WIZARD OF OZ on Blu-ray, but I'm going to hold out for a less expensive single or two-disc edition. Mind you, I like the film; but that is what I like, the film not disc after disc of extras that for the most part are repackagings of earlier editions.OK, that is my beef, and having made it, let me move on.

The Blu-ray is a definite improvement in the overall quality of the film, though not as much as one might have hoped for if you have watched the DVD on a up-conversion DVD player. This is not a problem restricted merely to this. Most of the older classics seem to have reached the point of diminishing returns on DVD. Even epic films like John Ford's THE SEARCHERS shows minimal improvement on Blu-ray. Still, even if the improvement isn't as marked as on more recent films, it is still definite.

But frankly, I think I loved the movie just as much when I was a kid watching it on my parents' old black and white tube TV. We all know the story about the film these days, that it was a critical and box office failure when it first was released. And we know all the stories about it. Buddy Ebsen being forced to drop out of the project when the make up that was sprayed on him caused a serious lung reaction. How Judy Garland took over the role when a deal to trade Jean Harlow and Clark Gable to Warner Brothers for a film so that MGM could get Shirley Temple, a deal that fell through when Shirley Temple died. We know all the songs, all the skits, and a host of the lines. And most importantly we have experienced firsthand how the film became a hit years after its first release because of its annual showings on television, hosted by Olivia DeHavilland (which never made a great deal of sense to me, since he had no connection to the film and had spend her studio career with Warner Brothers rather than MGM). Television was responsible for THE WIZARD OF OZ being the hit it became. But despite its success in the television era, it is almost impossible to understand how it failed to become an instant classic. The songs are irresistible, the performances classic, and the art design unmatched at the time. Scene after scene is filled with one perfect touch after another, like a peacock that strolls around in the background when Dorthy and the Scarecrow meet the Tin Man for the first time. Or the way the Cowardly Lion's tail twitches all the time (it is a subtle effect, but imagine how static he would be if he tail always drooped). It is a beautifully structured film, marvelously photographed, and beautifully scripted. The entire production is magical.

And this is a film that generations share. I remember vividly the terror I felt as a child watching Dorothy's friends come after her in the witch's fortress. Nothing in my childhood scared me more than Later it was the first movie that I watched with my daughter on TV (barely verbal at the time, she for several weeks referred to the film as "Scary Apples," for obvious reasons). My daughter probably watched the movie on VHS a hundred times minimum, largely because Dorothy was at the time one of the few female heroes around (this was before the Era of Buffy), and when she and I were stranded on a ski lift that was stopped during a sudden lightening storm immediately outside Flagstaff, Arizona, I kept her calm by retelling the entire movie, no mean feat given the lightening flashing all around us (though thankfully there was little rain).

This truly is one of those classics that it is impossible to imagine going away. The film is, if anything, as popular today as it has ever been. And conversions of it into new media like this new Blu-ray will guarantee that each generation will continue to rediscover it.』

『The Wizard of Oz, being the classic film that it is, deserves to be well done. I'd gotten used to seeing the substandard version and just assumed that "fuzz" was normal. I had a few film buffs with me when we first viewed the Anniversary Digital Copy [Blue-ray] and what a difference it made. We all saw things for the first time that couldn't be seen in previous video viewings. Great!!!』

This products captures the taste you get from a movie theater or popcorn cart style popcorn maker. Rather salty and the butter flavor is not exactly butter flavored.

That said, I LOVE that flavor, and it's delicious on the home popped popcorn without nearly as much grease as the movie theater machines need to add.』

『The projector was bought for use in Tanzania. It was easy to transport in my carry-on luggage as it is so light and compact. It is also very easy to use. Initially, it will be used for health education in rural areas - with the use of a generator or an inverter.』

『My Movie Mate 55 arrived about 3 weeks ago and we watched about 15 movies on it to date. Some I played right thru the machine, some thru another DVD player and some from my Satellite Dish Network. Picture was awesome from all sources. Easy to set up, adjust and control. One thing I wish were better is there is no RCA jacks for audio out when playing a DVD from the machines DVD slot but the built in speakers work well if you are not looking for Surround Sound from your main system. You can by-pass this by plugging a splitter in from the headphones jack out to your system to get Surround Sound from your main system. Another thing I wish they did was put a "Users Guide Book" with full details instead of the DVD Info Disk which is best read from ADOBE Reader. Other than that, this is an AWESOME Machine for home movies. Portable, Packaged Excellant for delivery and bright clear picture makes this a Great Buy.』

I wound up paying for the 2 day shipping and it took longer than 2 days. Emailed Amazon about this, first response was not helpful. Emailed again with all information and there was no reply. 『Before buying this product I did my research and found a tool from cyberlink that determines whether you can play blu-ray discs according to your hardware and software equipment at the following link ( http://www.cyberlink.com/stat/bd-support/enu/index.jsp ). The only thing I was missing was a software to play blu-ray. This product comes with the PowerDvD, which is the software that I needed to play the blu-ray discs. At the price you pay, this product is certainly a bargain!

This internal blu-ray drive is a retail item, so it comes with all the things you need to play blu-ray movies. The only bad thing is that you can't burn anything with it.

It's a great product and I've owned it for more than a week now testing it will all blu-rays I have, no regrets buying it.』

『Ok to start off, the blu-ray drive is a quality product that works flawlessly and is great for the price now. I have a 22" widescreen monitor that can support and display HD quality as well as a decent quality graphics card (Nvidia 9400GT 1GB). I try to make my computer as much as a media center as I possibly can so it is no surprise that I wanted a blu-ray player for it.

To all those who bought this product and gave it a lower rating than usual due to its inability to play blu-ray DVDs especially the newer ones: this is not as much as a hardware problem as it is software. YES, it has a HORRIBLE software and drivers for it and YES the updates are completely useless. For this problem I recommend getting Cyberlink Power DVD 9 Ultra Edition. The one that is given to people I think is PowerDvd 6 which is a horrible version with a lot of bugs and no real helpful updates. To actually buy the Cyberlink Power DVD 9 would cost you maybe $80 or more. Instead, and I am not advocating for this in any way and not responsible for any repercussions that come from it but...*cough* torrents *cough**cough*. With it, you can download the entire Power Dvd 9 Ultra Edition in maybe 2-3 hours or less depending on your connection and have you watching movies afterward in a few minutes.


Bottom line is that if you want to purchase this blu-ray drive, you WILL HAVE to get better software....legally or illegally or it will cost you another $70-$80 easily. Hope this review helped.』

『Save yourself the pain. Just buy a normal blu-ray player separate from your computer. Sometimes I could get the blu-ray player to work great. But often I'm re-installing drivers to get it running everytime Vista (64 bit ultimate) has a significant update. Currently I can't get it running after updating my Soundblaster audio card. Sometimes the blu-ray won't recognize a disc (however after a few restarts it might), or sometimes it will play but there will be no sound. Or sometimes, like now, I can't get it to work despite having re-installed and updating the blu-ray driver as well as the Cyber-link blu-ray player program. So I give up - I'm going to buy a normal blu-ray player.』

(Problems since day one!)
『I purchased this computer in March 2009. First of all, it's over priced, you should get at least 120gb hard drive! Half the space is already gone before it's delivered to your door. The screen is pretty small, it's really hard to read at times, you can increase the screen size on Windows Explorer but that makes it hard to navigate through the pages. Secondly, I can never use it for an extended amount of time because it freezes. I have to shut it down and reboot ! I haven't loaded anything on it because there isn't room so I'm not taking up any space. It also crashes and reboots on its own, I'll get some kind of crazy blue screen. Also, regardless of where I am, when I'm using the internet, it decides to disconnect or give me a limited connectivity messages. Lastly and worst of all, the screen cracked! Not sure if the dog or one of the kids stepped on it but I opened the screen and it looks cracked with broken pixels. Called Sony, because I figured it would still be under warranty and was told it's not covered! Had the same thing happen with my Dell computer and they fixed it with no problem, no questions asked! Then, these people at Sony had the nerve to tell me that a new screen would cost around $600!!! That's over half of what I paid for this piece of garbage! Oh well, you live and learn. Don't buy anything because it's "CUTE". That's really the only reason I did. I guess I'll buy one of those $400 netbooks!』

(The battery life kills this product)
『The packaging is beautiful and the size is wonderful. The battery life is simply not good enough to make the product useful to me.

Booting the machine is painfully slow. It takes something like 5 minutes for a complete boot. If you want to tinker with registry and stuff maybe this could be reduced a bit.

What I want is a PC that acts like a cell phone: you open the cover and it is ready to go. 5 minute boot is not acceptable in that scenario.

You can avoid the boot by making the system sleep/hibernate when you close the lid. It takes less that a minute for it to wake up, and I could live with this, except the system consume significant energy when it is asleep. If I close the lid (and put the machine to sleep) on a full battery, it will not make it through the day asleep. If you use it for a half hour, you have reduced the sleep time quite a bit (a couple of hours).

I am sure Sony has a list of tips for extending battery life, but I don't want to become a laptop energy expert.

My guess is that people who give powerpoint presentations would love this, also people who fly a lot. It would be great for them because it is so small and light and the battery life wouldn't matter because in both these situations you could plug it in.

I'm curious if replacing the hard drive with a flash drive would help. Also, maybe a faster hard drive would make the boot quicker. Windows 7 might help. Maybe running Linux would help the boot time too.

I've toyed with getting the extended battery, but the thought of spending another $100 after the original $999 is not very attractive. I'm seriously wondering if I can find someone who would trade a Kindel DX for the Sony.』

I also use this at home, i plug this tiny computer, to my 46' LCD T.V. , not saying there something wrong with it screen, it the crisp's, sharpest, screen, FOR A SMALL laptop. Just add all the devices i explain, it will cost 40% and all those devices you have to carry,and worry about power cords, adapters. SONY IS THE ONE ONLY.』

『Do yourself a favor and stay away from Sony laptops and notebooks. I have been a SONY fan for ages, but this time they let me down to the extent that I'll never buy Sony again. I bought a Sony Vaio VGN FZ series and after 15 months the motherboard completely broke. It just shut off with no warning and I tried to get help from Sony but they have the worst techinical support in the USA; the only thing they do (after waiting several minutes on the phone for someone to take your call) is say "I am sorry for your inconvenience" or "send your laptop to the Service Center". I live in Virginia and their proposal was me to send the laptop to San Diego, CA!!!!! and I would have to run with all costs (including shipping) plus they told tha it would be more than 500 dollars to repair a laptop that costs 980 dollars brand new!!!! I just gave up and wiil be definitely getting a new one; however, this time I am going to go for a Dell or HP because now I realize the importance of a good technical support.』

『I purchased this item and immediately noticed it had no latch! no magnet, and no way to keep it shut. Knowing this would be a problem I went to return it at bestbuy and they wanted a 15% restocking fee so I ended up keeping it. God what a mistake that was, I was on my way to class, I'm a college student and I have a lot of paperwork mind you, and I went to open my laptop and the screen was scratched, because apparently a cd got wedged in between the screen and the keyboard! - I called sony and asked for a replacement screen and they said that this was an outside of warranty issue. Heres my problem with this, I spent all this money on a laptop, only to realize that it didn't come with a latch! even after the salesperson sold it to me telling me it had a way "some how" to latch, and then after the first year of owning it, keep in mind my screen is now scratched... the hinges have come loose! - so stuff gets in the computer even more now... This computer would be great, if sony didn't have such a crappy warranty policy about replacing a damaged product, clearly caused by an idiot engineer that DIDN'T want to put a latch on my laptop! Thanks for nothing guys...』

『Elmo is so entrancing, I have no idea how he does it, but when this DVD is on, my daughter can't help but stare at the TV and talk to Elmo (even at only 6 months old!) This episode of Elmo's World is particularly cute because he explores the world of adorable babies-humans and animals. Something about babies makes other babies want to watch. Thanks to Elmo, I get some much needed "Me time"...Although this DVD gets old for me some days, it's worth it because my daughter is glued to it and just can't seem to get enough of this fuzzy little monster and his cute little friends!!』

『I purchased last Christmas Charlie Brown Chritsmas dvd, and thought to purchased this year the blu ray dvd to see the difference in the graphics/images. Well there is no difference at all. Since my blu ray dvd converts regular dvd movie to hd movie, the regular dvd is nearly same clarity as the blu ray dvd. I don't think they can make it better, however it is a big improvement on the color and images, that I can say. But I don't think it's worth to spend of the blu ray dvd thinking it might be better than the regular dvd.』

『Honestly, if you knew about the blu-ray format and the capacity 1 disc has you should be appalled that there isn't the entire peanuts collection on 1 disc. This is such a obvious marketing plot to extort more money out of the consumer. If you buy this disc you are only feeding into that disgraceful behavior. If you don't know, blu-rays can hold more than 10 times the amount of content a DVD can hold. The entire peanuts movie collection can fit on to one blu-ray disc and to seperate them over 10+ discs just takes more money from you to send their fat kids to college. A pox on both your houses.』

『The show is great. I watch it every Christmas with my family and we never get tired of it. But as much as I would love to give this product five stars, I had to knock a star off due to the ridiculous slipcover. The glitter is messssyyyy! Be prepared to wash your hands every time you handle this! I don't know where WB's brains are when they created this slipcover. I feel bad for the people that have to stock this on store shelves. Their hands must get really messy. But other than that, this show is great and it comes with a DVD too. So, I think the $20 is a fair price. Highly recommended so long as you don't mind washing your hands often ;)

『This production stands at the top of my list of endearing Christmas classics, and for so many reasons. First of all, it has been around longer than me, so I have been watching this every Christmas for my entire life. But more importantly, I love this because it is one of the few non-Biblical Christmas TV classics that still CLEARLY touches on the true meaning of Christmas. I say buy this now BEFORE they edit it, or completely obliterate it from the planet. In a time when there are so many fighting to have and and all indications of Christ (including the word "Christmas" itself) so blatantly removed from what is now being simply called the "holiday" season, my worst fear is that there will come a day when this treasured gem will no longer be allowed on television for that very reason, or worse, having the "what Christmas is all about" scene just simply edited out.』

『We all know how we love watching this every year, but is it really worth it to buy the Blu-ray? Well, you don't just get a Blu-ray disc with this release, you also get a second disc that is essentially the remastered SD-DVD that is playable on any standard DVD player. Also, this DVD allows you to download the feature onto your computer/laptop/ipod. So for $20 you get three versions of the film (HD, SD, portable). The picture quality on the Blu-ray is a little better than the remastered DVD, the colors are a little bolder for sure (I'm watching on a professionally calibrated 50" Pioneer Kuro). Also, there is a new 5.1 audio mix that was not on the standard DVD that sounds very engaging.

If you already own the remastered DVD, I wouldn't necessarily rush out and buy this. If you don't have the remastered DVD, it's a must buy because you get the Blu-ray and remastered DVD (and the "free" download) for a halfway decent price.』

『One of the greatest films of all time, GWTW is a fascinating depiction of Southern life during and after the Civil War. This review, however, is for the product, not the film. I give the product four out of five stars for the following reasons:

1) This edition comes with many extras, even a recreation of the program used 70 years ago. Also included is a sample of the original motion picture soundtrack and roughly eight hours worth of bonus features, including documentaries, commentary, and more. While the product description mentions ten 5"x7" water color pictures (which it does include), it also comes with recreated telegrams, letters and more from the cast, crew and production company.

2) The film transfer is beautifully done. The film flows smoothly and is featured on two DVDs. While that is rather annoying, having to get up and change DVDs or wait as the player automatically shifts between the two, that sacrifice for the beauty of the film is well worth it.

3) The price is rather high for what you get. I love the film and had no problem paying the money for it, but the price is still rather high. Taking into account all the facts that there are only 150,000 copies out there, the price seems rather reasonable for such a "rare" item. Even with that, it's still rather high.

All in all, definitely worth the value you put into it. One quick side note here before I finish. The film IS presented in original format, which is FULLSCREEN. Films prior to 1953 were not shown in theaters in what we now know as WIDESCREEN. This was developed in the early fifties during the television boom to help add to the experience movie-goers wanted. EVEN WITH THAT IN MIND, the set is great and I highly recommend it.

(70th Anniversary Collector's Edition Blu-ray WOW!)
『I usually don't like purchasing collector's edition boxes as I don't usually care for the extra items and they are bulky to store. The boxed set of Gone With The Wind impressed me though. It is elegantly packaged in red velvet box and the extra items are awesome as well, like the David Selznick memos about choosing among Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and Errol Flynn for the role of Rhett, the hardbound photo book and souvenir program reproduction. The price at Amazon was also almost half the regular price, so the purchase was well worth it. Best of all, I got the set yesterday on the day of release, even though I used the free-shipping option. I noticed that Amazon is now using Ontrac for delivery and the orders seem to arrive much quicker.

Now for the blu-ray itself...the transfer is simply awesome. The color correction and clarity are breathtaking. I actually noticed wrinkles on Vivien Leigh and Leslie Howard's faces, which make you realize that they were actually older than the roles they played. The film is in the original 1.33 aspect ratio, which was common for movies in those days. I know some people are looking for the widescreen version, which this film was not originally shot in. If you have a good HDTV, the solution is simple by viewing using wide zoom to fill the screen. You lose part of the top and bottom details, but there's usually not much there. I do mind when they crop the sides to make widescreen fit regular screens (pan&scan) as you lose lots of details on the sides. However, if you want to see this movie in its original glory with all the details, then watch it in the original aspect ratio. I also like that the whole movie is in one disc for continuous viewing without having to change discs. You know how long it sometimes takes to load a blu-ray disc, but this one loads fast as they don't have the elaborate menus to slow it down.

There are many extras on the second disc and the only one I viewed so far was the restoration process, which is always fascinating to me because of the age of the movie.

Overall, this collection is well worth the purchase. I just wonder what they will come up next for the 75th anniversary. Maybe by that time HDTV's can display at 8000p and we'll end up seeing more details than available now.』

In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. 『Ambitious but thwarted, Rae Smith (Susan Hayward) meets handsome Marine Paul Saxon (John Gavin), as he passes through Lincoln, Nebraska, on his way home from World War II. Paul Saxon is heir to his family's prosperous department store chains. There's a definite spark between them but circumstances intervene and he leaves town without her. Later she learns he's married. Determined to make it as a fashion designer, Rae moves to New York and becomes a great success. One day she happens to meet Paul again and again there's that spark but he's still married so, as a form of escape, Rae moves to Rome to set up shop. Once again she meets Paul and finally they begin an actual affair since Paul's shrewish, drunken wife, Liz (Vera Miles), won't give him a divorce. Time passes, the affair continues whenever time and place permit, but then, Paul's young son finds out about Rae and Rae's back-street world begins to crumble.

1961's "Back Street" is one of several classic soap opera style movies that is seriously overdue for a DVD release! With the recent release of Lana Turner's "Portrait in Black" and "Madame X," I was sure that Susan Hayward's "Back Street" would not be too far behind! Also missing from the DVD store shelves are "The Stolen Hours," "Where Love Has Gone," "By Love Possessed," "The Many Faces of Love," and "Magnificent Obsession." These are just a few of the classic dramas that came to mind, don't get me started on the missing classic comedies!! "The Reluctant Debutante," "The Mating Game," "Don't Make Waves!" And still so many classic horror, sci-fi, and western films still not on DVD!!

Fans of "Back Street" and especially Susan Hayward, should check out (or simply add these to your DVD library!!) "I'll Cry Tomorrow," "With A Song In My Heart," "I Want To Live!" and "Valley of the Dolls." (Witty&wry - just forget the tired cliches)
『My first impression about a quarter way into this movie, was "Oh, NO! Another aliens-as-racial-minority metaphor!" Yes, yes, I know all that, I just wanna be entertained- that theme's been done, then done again, then again ..ad nauseum. I was thinking the only way to save the plot line was to have the aliens relocated to Chicago as new Obama voters. Then I was pleasantly surprised.

So what does save this movie and transcends it beyond the predictable racism-is-bad, apartheid-is-bad "message", what saves it is that ultimately it doesn't take itself seriously, at which point the movie becomes immensely entertaining. The matter of fact story telling absorbs the viewer to accept the premise despite one's common sense. Looking like something I ate at last summer's clambake, the alien CGI is nearly flawless.

Best of all, the witty screenplay has such wry humor that it leaves nothing and no one unscathed. From the Afrikaner elites, to the S.A. Blacks ( who, themselves victims of cruel apartheid, display the same sentiments to these new arrivals), to the aliens themselves portrayed more like insects with a gusto for cat food and tires, advanced technology notwithstanding. Not to mention the proverbial military-industrial complex (always a good villain). Even political correctness is mocked as we follow that dolt of a protagonist's rise via nepotism to a position of authority. His adventures inspecting the District is a rich example of sarcasm as mockumentary.

Of course the tired apartheid-alien message continues throughout the movie: segregated slums, Nazi inspired experiments, sham laws, forced mass evacuations, one from the "majority" transforming into one of the "minority". But as the movie progresses this theme becomes so cliche that it barely rises to consciousness and renders it meaningless. And that is a good thing. There's a world of serious cinema dealing with that subject more worthy to explore than a movie such as this. At best, maybe use it as a teaching tool on your middle-schooler about the lessons of apartheid.

So to all initially put off about this film, I say give it a view. It won't disappoint.』

『I use this drive for Time Machine backups on a G4 iMac running OS X 10.5.8 . It works well, with the following caveats:

*If high data transfer rates are important to you, the Mac version of this drive is a better choice. This model does not support FireWire and has only a USB 2.0 connector.

*While Macs will allow plug-and-play usage of this drive for many purposes, it is better to do a repartitioning before loading data onto it. The drive comes pre-formatted for Windows, but Mac users can easily change the drive to Apple's PowerPC or Intel format using OS X's Disk Utility (there are clear instructions in the Support area of the Seagate website).

*The bundled disk management utilities are for Windows only and will be erased if the disk is repartitioned.

*After repartitioning, the automatic sleep and power-down functions of the drive still work. If the drive goes to sleep too often for your work patterns (there isn't any way to change the sleep parameters without using the Windows utilities), Seagate has a downloadable Mac patch, again in the Support area of its website, that disables the drive's built-in sleep function and allows OS X's Energy Saver preferences to control the drive.

*The drive does seem noisy when it is moving the read/write heads. I'm not going to worry about it, though, because there is a 5-year warranty and I am not using the drive as my primary hard disk. However, anybody planning on using this HD for mission critical purposes should read all the reviews here. Some reviewers have reported reliability problems.

『Works great for a non-professional photographer who doesn't know much, but can learn quickly the different options of which there seem to be a nice amount. It takes superb pictures in my opinion, though the last camera was about 3 years ago and technology moves so fast. It's a very nice compact camera and nice to look at as well.』

(A Very Good Camera)
『I've purchased my Panasonic DMC-ZR1 still camera via Amazon just a few days ago because I needed an ultra-compact backup for may Nikon D90. When you travel there might be some situations when you are not in the mood or just can not use your DSLR. So I was looking for a small camera, which could produce high quality outdoor pictures and HD video.

I'm an advanced amateur photographer. I take pictures mostly on weekends and vacations when I prefer to have in my pocket a small but sophisticated camera which I can forget about during the day but which can take great shots when it is needed. That is why my best cameras were Sony DSC-T1, T30, and recently - T100. The latter one was nominated as the best ultra-compact in 2007, and it indeed was. But time flies and a new 16:9 wide format came to still cameras and video, which T100 did not support. So about a year ago I purchased Panasonic DMC-TZ5 and a little bit later - FZ18. I bought FZ18 because of its incredibly bright 18x super zoom lens. I believe that each of above mentioned cameras was an absolute champion in their class at that time, but now I wanted something almost as good as that but in a small package.

After doing a lot of research on Amazon.com and dpreview I've chosen ZR1. My first impression - it's a very good camera. I like a solid build quality of its metall body. There are no flimsy elements or grinding sounds while zooming or focussing. Zoom itself is very smooth both optically and mechanically. While taking stills it is very fast, however it has some inertia. While shooting video it's relatively slow, which allowes autofocus to do its job well.

What I like very much about my Sony T100 - when shooting video of a moving subject the autofocus keeps it in focus all the time by doing a very small adjustments which you can hardly admit. Many other P&S cameras either do not allow zooming on video or hunting focus most of the time. That was the issue with the original TZ5, which was significantly improved in software update ver. 1.2. From my prospective the new ZR1 has as the same great autofocus mechanism as my T100 - when you follow a moving subject or apply zoom ZR1 keeps it in focus nicely (and without producing any noticeable sound). But when you do a panorama without a central moving object - do it slowly to allow the camera to decide, which next part of your picture should be in focus. On still pictures the autofocus is very quick and precise.

The 8x zoom Leica lens is just great: very good colors fidelity, contrast, and color saturation in the entire zoom range from wide to tele. The wide 25mm (equivalent) is great, but it comes at some cost: for the distant subjects the barrel distortions and the decrease of sharpness of the peripheral areas are pretty visible, however when you shoot from a relatively close distance around 1.5-3 m it seems some special processing is involved because there is almost no any visible barrel distortions or loss of sharpness. I have to admit all three my Panasonic cameras behave the same way but for ZR1 it's more noticable because of its incredibly wide 25mm lens. If you apply a little bit zoom the resolution becomes pretty even accross the picture and with no barrel distortions. I did not perform any special stress testing but on all the pictures I've got I did not see any chromatic aberrations or vignetting in the entire zoom range. Physically you can zoom in the only 8x range but it is possible to increase it up to 15.6x for the lower 3MP picture resolution. Normally you might want that if you're taking pictures of some specific subjects like kids, birds, or animals. Just imagine - having 400mm equivalent telephoto lens in your pocket - it's just amazing, and IMHO those 3MP shots look pretty good on my 24" monitor (if you do not crop them more).

A new ZR1 has the impressive 12MP comparing to 9MP of TZ5 but on the same sensor size, and as a result - more noise. On the dpreview site you could read that Panasonic did a great job by separating the entire noise into its low-frequency and high-frequency wavebands and also splitting the color and luminance noise and handling them separately. My comparative edge-to-edge testing of both ZR1 and TZ5 shots showed that ZR1 does exactly what was stated and does it pretty good. On the ZR1 picturese taken at dim light conditions the noise was remarkable less than on the TZ5's ones! However at a very-very dark conditions when the pictures become very grainy you can see that the level of noise from ZR1 is somewhat bigger, than from TZ5. Another good news is that the white balance in ZR1 is almost perfect: the night pictures taken by TZ5 and FZ18 were either colored red or had some other weird colors while ZR1 in alomst dark situations showed as the same correct white balance as if the pictures were taken at a day-light time.

If you're shooting on a bright sunny day your pictures might be too much contrasty and either shadow parts like trees can be darken to black or the blue sky or some other light areas might be completely washed out. The camera menu does not allow you to adjust the contrast directly but you can set an Intelligent Exposure mode instead. Then it constantly analyzes the scene and if it has too much contrast the camera automatically applys either slower shutter speed or higher ISO and reduces the overal contrast. I found that on ZR1 that feature is not that good as on TZ5. Another way is to switch the mode dial to "MS" or "SCN" mode and select "High Dynamic" scene. In that case camera unconditionally and remarkably decreases the overall contrast (more than in Intelligent mode) and adjusts the shutter speed or/and ISO the way that even dark areas are well exposed, and that really works well.

There are the two things which are still better on my T100 than on ZR1 or TZ5: the quality of the VGA video and the clarity of sound. However having the HD video mode you might not need VGA at all. The quality of HD video on ZR1 is as the same great as on TZ5 and the image stabilization is even slightly better. But for stills the image stabilization was much more improved, I guess more than the 2 times as they stated. On the maximum zoom in low light many of my TZ5 pictures were slightly smeared, while the ones taken by ZR1 at the same time were perfect.

I like the ZR1's menu and controls - they're similar to TZ5' and are very clear and intuitive. Plus there are some additional functions. It allows you to set some parameters manually, but do it only if you're very clear about what you're doing, otherwise let that sophisticated camera do it for you. For example: you might be taking a picture of a tree and the system sets the ISO=100 and shutter speed 1/20. But then you see a small squirell and apply the 15.6x zoom to have it big enough on your screen. As a result system might change ISO to 500 and shutter to 1/100. You might be thinking that the camera got crazy, but actually it detected that your hands are shaking too much for the big focal length you set and so the shutter speed needs to be much faster to prevent the shot to be blurred. It's intelligent mode is pretty good.

UPDATE: This ZR1 camera has an incredible display: it shows pictures at any angle and even in the direct sunlight. A while ago I was going on vacation to Cancun and I purchased a Kodak V1273 ultracompact camera because of its wide-screen stills and HD video. But when I tried to use it on the beach I was totally confused - nothing, absolutely nothing was visible on display on a sunny day! If I did not have my Sony T100 as a backup all my vacation would be completely spoiled. In the direct sunlight the image on the T100's display looks like a black-and-white reflection, but at least you can point and frame your shots and use the menu. ZR1 does even better - the picture in the direct sunlight has all the colors, just looks darker and not that contrast. On the TZ5's display if you slightly turn camera around the horizontal axis the brightness and contrast of the image is changing pretty much. On the ZR's one picture remains the same regardless of from what angle you are looking at it. It means you're not going to regret the display is not swivable as well as you will not miss the optical viewfinder because you can see the pictures even in the direct sunlight. Only one thing: it seems the palette of that display is a kind of limited and it might not show some subtle tints of colors, so don't judge colors until you see it on a good monitor.

UPDATE2: Recently I did some comparative testing of the picture quality of my ZR1 and TZ5. A side-by-side comparison has shown that the general resolution and sharpnes of the ZR1's pictures is remarkably higher than of TZ5's ones. From the detailed analysis I got an impression that around 20% of that improvement comes from higher sensor resolution (12MP verse 9MP), 30-40% because of the better noise reduction, and about 40-50% because of the stronger internal sharpening in ZR1 than that in TZ5. When I did some sharpening to my TZ5's photos using the Nero Photoshop the difference became less visible. For better understanding why the more sophisticated noise reduction might help pictures to look sharper you can think about it this way: as the same as contrast is a difference between light and dark areas, sharpness is a difference between plain areas and edges. The less a certain area has noise, the more it looks "plain", and so it more differentiates from edges making a sharper impression. Also because the original purpose of this purchase was to have a backup for my Nikon D90 I did some comparison of their HD video capabilities. Would you believe or not - ZR1 provided much better moving picture resolution than D90. Of course the ZR1's movies show some noise (as the same as any other compact P&S camera) while D90's ones don't. That noise is not much noticable because it looks like the one on the film cameras and I could not admit any visible artefacts, so the general impression is much better, and when I have a choice between D90 and ZR1 I will definitely shoot HD movies with my ZR1 camera.

So I think this is a very good camera and the best in its class for now.

『I have been into amateur photography most of my life (getting too old to carry all the heavy stuff) and wanted a light, easy to use, go everywhere camera that takes quality pictures comparable to a mid-level DSLR. The Panasonic Lumix GF1 delivers.
This camera is very light and handles well. The image quality is excellent with both the 14-45mm and neat little 20mm f1.7 lenses. I have made 16x20 enlargements with raw images in photoshop with great results. These are close to my Canon D50 shots using an L series lense. The focus is fast and true, great live view with sharp auto and enlarged screen manual focusing. The viewing screen is sharp and clear; however I did get the optional viewfinder which works well especially with bright scenics. I will not review the video or the numerous features other then to say there are many, easy to use options, some quite sophisticated.
OK so any major drawbacks? Not for me. However I'm not sure I would strongly recommend this for the casual consumer who just wants some nice 4X6 images of the family with an occasional enlargement. While the GF1 is superior to point and shoots, it is also more expensive and complicated. The instructions need to be read over carefully several times if you want to successfully use many of the neat options. It can be used for auto everything, but if that is what you want, there are much cheaper and easier to use cameras.
If you want one of the most functional, unique, quality cameras around, the GF1 could be for you.

(A PORTABLE STREET-WISE CAMERA)
『The Panasonic GF1 is a well-made MFT camera. I find it to be sufficiently portable as a street-wise camera with the 20mm f1.7 MFT lens. The raw IQ is very good below iso 800. It is as good as the Olympus E-P1 that I also owned.』

(So close to perfect it hurts)
『If movie mode had fully manual controls over exposure and it shot at 24 FPS I'd be beside myself. The combination of the lens and sensor give this camera a really nice DOF in an incredibly compact package. It's really a shame Panasonic didn't deliver on manual controls and a 24P frame rate, because this camera would a viable choice for high end ultra portable film-making. I can live with 720P, but the inability to set ISO and shutter speed makes me crazy. It can take pretty stunning video, but you have to be very careful with changing light values. You are able to focus manually however (again, why not go the whole way?!)

The other thing I hate is the wheel used for shutter/aperture. I used a G9/10 for the last three years and I MUCH prefer it's exposure wheel.

Otherwise I'm very happy. The noise is low, the shutter delay is very fast, as is auto focus, and it has a 7 exposure auto bracket mode. The drive modes also have their own hardware selector by the function mode knob. The noise is acceptable to about 1600 ISO, which amazes me as it's body is only a little larger than my G10. I try to never shoot above 400 on the G10. That's a huge swath of light that was never available to me before.

If you're moving up from a compact you will love this camera's performance. If you want the GF1 to complement your SLR you'll be very happy with it's portability.』

『One of them broke. The strap came unstitched after 40 days. My kids love these, but you might want to consider purchasing from somewhere with a 90 day return policy, otherwise you may ending up dealing with the manufacturer. Having said that, I will tell you that they are super cool, and my boys all love them. They are big, there is only one per box, which makes them expensive, and they require batteries. They work okay for my 3-7 year olds. They are easy to use, and pretty good quality, compared to my other kids toys like GI Joe and Transformers. I would also say they are no more dangerous than a plastic sword. I haven't been worried about them hurting each other with them.』

His hand fits under the black part and it has adjustable velcro underneath and a handle to hold onto so virtually anyone can use it, no matter their size.

(A good facsimile and more durable than expected)
『I bought this for my five year old son. I was concerned that it was too complicated and too fragile but he had his little heart set on getting Optimus Prime and the only other model costs twice as much. Well both concerns turned out unfounded. After a little bit of initial help, Jack was soon converting it from robot to truck and back without any help - it really wasn't that complicated but kudos on the overall sophistication of the toy for the price. In terms of durability, well parts do tend to fall off - particularly the smoke stacks, the feet and these red flaps on the arms. But fortunately they snap right back on and seem none the worse. It seems that the toy was designed to give on pre set snap joints rather than breaking - kudos again for the design folks. I don't want to overstate the quality - I am sure it will break in time, almost all toys do, but it survived the first week with a whole lot of play and my son is very happy spending a lot of time with opimus prime.』
