(Excellent introduction)
(A feast for thought......)
(Great intro to tantra for the rest of us)
(Educational Documentary) A smashing hit in many gay&lesbian film festivals worldwide, HCO is the best gift your can give your (lesbian) lover! You don't have to be a Yoga expert to enjoy it . It is very informative and entertaining. Women of all ages will learn specific techniques (live demonstrations included!) along with the history and the philosophy behind lesbian tantra yoga. Don't miss it! This DVD is definitely more of an overview than specific instructional, but it's an excellent and inspiring overview that piqued my interest and made me think: I sure would like a little more of that in my life! Yes, some of the women interviewed are a little new-agey, but if you get past that (or, of course, if that's your thing) the sincerity in their voices and testimonies really shines through. Of course this DVD will have special resonance for lesbian women, but I'm straight and still came away from it with a lot of great information (the most important being that the relationship you need to focus on first is the one with yourself.)
ETA: The 'Special Features' area does offer some more specific instructional sections/demonstrations, but you'd probably want to pick up a different DVD or book to really learn the practice and exercises. This brave documentary gives a glimpse into the lesbian tantric world. For the first time, tantric principles and exercises are laid out for our community. The film presents 3 different teachers, and gives a good foundation of tantric history and how to apply its principles to the gay and lesbian community.
Even if one never fully adopts a "tantric lifestyle" this film will expand your notions of both what tantra is -- much more than the mere sexual applications -- and what true partnership can be. It encourages us to slow down and take time ...... whether it is during the act of sex itself, or buy actually "scheduling" time on a daily basis to connect to our loved ones. Pretty sound advise I think. Further, the exercises designed to help one connect with ones own sexual energy and be able to move that energy -- through breath work, etc. -- gives us tools for healing past wounds as well as fighting things like "lesbian bed death." All and all very powerful in its possibilities.
After taking workshops in which I was the only gay person/couple in the group, this video was a refreshing reminder that tantra works for same-sex couples too. This DVD is a great intro to tantra for the gay crowd and after watching it I immediately signed up for one of Pamela's workshops. She's a wonderful tantrika and I'd highly recommend both the DVD and her workshops. This video is more what I would call an educational documentary on tantra, almost clinical. It was really not what I expected given other reviews. Very 'New Age' and somewhat educational, I've already given it to a new agey friend who may get more from it than I did. 'Hearts Cracked Open' provides the first in-depth look inside the world of lesbian Tantra with its ancient ecstatic practices and sexual techniques. Through interviews with Tantra teachers and students, workshop footage, and daily practices, Hearts Cracked Open celebrates sexuality and coupling in the lesbian community while also promoting discussion about this usually hidden aspect of our lives. We invite you to witness the transformative power of Tantra to crack open the heart as women reclaim the fullness of their beings. Rerations < Hearts Cracked Open: Tantra for Women Who Love Women >

(College days - Starvation vs. BoDeans)
(Surely one of their best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Not Their Best)
(A Lost Classic) Every few months, I make out a Top 15 "Desert Island" list of my favorite albums. There are a few who always make the top 10 and this BoDeans release is one of them.
Catchy melodies, great lyrics...with not a dull song in the bunch (you know the kind--you skip it on the CD player or leaving it off when you download the album on to your computer.
You can't go wrong with this terrific CD. The Strangest Kind is one of my all-time favorite songs! I remember it well. The BoDeans played Atlanta GA in 1988 in support of this album, of which I had the cassette and listened to endlessly. Every song was a sing-a-long. Great lyrics, catcy riffs and sublime melodies.
The night of the show, I had $14.00 in the bank (am I glad that times have changed, very much for the better!) Tickets were $12.00 plus a "service charge." For me, it was either food for the next few days, or the BoDeans show.
I regret my decision to this day. The soup was bland, the beans were dry and the bread was doughy.
And somewhere, out there, someone else is remembering the BoDeans show of 1988 in Atlanta. But it ain't me babe. No, no, no it ain't me, babe. :-/
Oh wait - that's Dylan. Anyway, this BoDeans album is great. Buy it. I am a true bodeans fan and I think that this album is perfect!! The only song that's a little weird is "Ultimatly Fine". But the first four or five are killer hits! I stronly reccomend this to anyone out for the Bodeans!!! Guy Hoffman on drums, Kurt Neumann on vocal and electric lead guitar, Sammy Llanas on vocal and guitar, and Bobby Griffin on bass really sound good for just four musicians! Buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be the dissenting voice amid all the kudos thrown at this album. Make no mistake - I am a BoDeans fan, and I know they can crank out catchy, heartland rock like no one else.Unfortunately, this album only has flashes of future brightness. While the music is"good", it's not great. When you consider that this album came out in the late 80s, it is a miracle that it was released - the influence of simple, catchy songs from the late 50s and early 60s is unmistakable, and really went against the grain of overproduced, synth-based music of the release year. While the music is fun and solid, it fails to rise above that - never enters the"great"zone, that leaves you humming a riff or intro for the next few days, nor do you want to crank you car volume to 11. However, what ruins the album for me - and yes,"ruins"is correct - are the vocals. For whatever reason, Sam Llanas sings lead on most of the songs. I'd compare listening to his voice akin to scraping the inside of my skull with a fork, only less pleasant. Sam's voice is extremely limited in range, as well as being quite nasal. Kurt Neuman's voice - when it can be heard - is in fine form, and I wish he had sung lead on more of the songs. The siezure-inducing quality of Sam's voice is curious, because with later BoDeans albums, it's much better. Either his voice become stronger, or their budget for production effects got bigger, or both. My recommendation: skip it unless you find it cheap somewhere. Start with"Go Slow Down,""Black and White"or"Blend."Those albums feature Sam and Kurt at the height of their writing and singing powers. I read Amazon reviews all the time but very rarley put anything to print. However, this album is so amazing that it deserves my valuable time. Someone said the first "side" is as good as anything from the 80's. It's as good a side as anything, anytime and don't forget that beautiful little closing track that is just so perfect. Throughout the album the guitars just bristle with a beautifully fresh sound and the melodies are unforgettable after a few listens. No one will ever top Little Feat's output from '73 to '76 but this album comes close. Indispensable is a bit over-the-top...but this album is. Rerations < Love&Hope&Sex&Dreams >

customer 's review (The Good Book of Love Sex in the Bible is great!) Using biblical scholars from around the world, including Vanderbilt University theologians and Dr. Ruth, this video is a fascinating account of specific types of sex in the old testament and the changing mores of sex in the new testament. It's a wonderfully informing documentary, which I recommend highly for adults, but parental guidance for children. -Deborah Smith Embree in Nashville... The Holy Bible and the passions of sexuality are usually thought of as distinctly separate expressions of the human experience, but in fact the Scriptures are brimming with tales of physical love and lust. THE GOOD BOOK OF LOVE is a fascinating, feature-length investigation of sex in the Bible. Scholars of the Scriptures like Father Thomas Rausch at Loyola Marymount and Rabbi David Wolpe of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles shed light on the dichotomy between the views of sexuality presented in the Old and New Testaments. The former is filled with ribald tales of matriarchs going to amazing extremes to get children, while in the latter celibacy and virginity are commended. But nowhere in the Bible is sex itself called sinful--this attitude developed over hundreds of years and was influenced by the misogynist opinions of celibate church fathers. From unashamed erotic poetry to cautionary lessons on sinful sexual excess, join us (and noted sex expert Dr. Ruth Westheimer) for a riveting, and occasionally steamy, exploration of the uncensored Bible.

customer 's review (Chinese Baroque Commedia del Arte)
(A Chinese Picaresque Satire?)
(Great fun!)
(What a thoroughly bizarre film.)
(More fun than you can shake a stick at (but you can try)) Loosely based on the 17th Century erotic literary classic, *The Carnal Prayer Mat*, this film is at once an erotic, picaresque tale of adventure, and a Ch'an Buddhist morality play (of sorts). Set in the late Yuan Dynasty (think: Kublai Khan), the film is a reasonably funny, and often very amusing farce, as well as a biting satire both of the manners and mores of a certain epoch in China. The film conjures up the cultural decadence at the tail-end of an age of great creative and imaginative vigor and growth...The depths of degradation, despair and delusion are explored; ignorance, lust and aggression (the Three Poisons of classical Buddhist teaching) are present in abundance. Hallucinatory surreal scenes vie with ordinary profane reality; realism is set beside bizarre unorthodox fantasy in a mixture which recalls elements both of the Golden Ass and Don Juan, to use some (admittedly imprecise) Occidental points of reference. In the end there is (an almost Christian) message of repentance (by the film's three principle rogues), forgiveness and redemption, but there is an equivocal sardonic irony in the message, as well. One puzzle about this film is the title: i.e. whereas there is a great deal of sex enacted in multiple variations (sometimes quite extreme) in this film, it is hard to discern the least trace of Zen, or its Chinese precursor, Ch'an Buddhism. The only overt expressions of Buddhism are of the most formalistic, prechy moralizing variety; a pietistic, perhaps ritualistic, mannerist caricature of Buddhism, perhapss--or perhaps rather a caricature of Roman Catholicism, or of any other petrified, formalistic religion. One suspects the influence of Spanish picaresque literature,... If you are the kind of moviegoer who gets upset by the showing of breasts or have no sense of humor (especially the mature kind), you will not enjoy this movie. Otherwise, this movie is utterly entertaining. Lots of nice colors, beautiful women (especially Amy Yip and that Japanese actress), funny storyline, decent acting, all make this a classic that appeals to both mainstream and HK cult movie viewers. If there's a Chinatown near you you might want to get it there and save a few bucks. Going solely by a few reviews here, I bought this film with the assumption that it would be a steamy comedy. While there are some very steamy scenes indeed, the "comedy" is so low-brow as to not even raise a chuckle.... While a couple of the sex scenes are very good, there is one that is basically a violent rape of a battered woman, and another that is very close to rape (although the women of course end up enjoying the experience, naturally.) There is also a forced abortion, and a woman being forced into slavery, some things I wouldn't expect to find in a comedy at all. There are a couple of Buddhist sentiments tossed in at the beginning and at the end, but by and large, this is just soft core porn - the story line makes little sense, and is just a cheap way to get from one sex scene to the next. I'd expect that in flat-out pornographic films, but in something trying to pass itself off as something else...well, I was disappointed. Some of the colors, fabrics and textures are very lovely, but it's obviously a low-budget film. The actors and actresses are generally attractive, and if all you want is some soft-core porn to pass an hour or so, this might just be your movie. Bear in mind that it's subtitled, although with the level of diaglogue that's present, you might just as well leave it off. Overall, very disappointing. To many Hong Kong/China cinethusiasts (your humble reviewer being one), the presence of Amy Yip makes virtually any DVD worth a spin. I'm happy to say that Ms. Yip's ample charms aren't the only things "Sex And Zen" have going for it; it's a funny and sexy romp. Imagine Hong Kong martial arts wirework applied to gymnastics of another kind, all under the guise of a spiritual quest, and you'll have some idea what goodies are in store. Don't come to this film expecting the height of cinematic art, it's just lightweight, erotic fun. Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream. Rerations < Sex and Zen >

(One Of The Greatest Comedies Ever Made)
(Christina Applegate At Her Best)
(A very long SNL)
(AWESOME) I wanted to like this movie, I really did. I know that Will Ferrell is supposed to be funny and I keep waiting for him to prove it, but.....I'm still waiting. I stopped watching and ejected the DVD when Ferrell kicked a dog off a bridge. What kind of sick prick considers this amusing? Anchorman is a film that only comes around once every decade or so and it sets the standard for any comedies to follow. Arguably being Will Ferrells best it's a film with very ridiculous comedy moments brought together in an extremely intelligent way. It's not something where the jokes are reeled off one by one in an in obvious way, in fact some of the more funny jokes you can miss the first time round as they're very subtle. Along with Will Ferrell this film has a very strong supporting cast with people like Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and Christina Applegate. They give us a great blend of serious acting with very, very silly humour. I'm not usually a fan of the silly comedy movies and I'm sure a lot of people will shy away from it because it looks just that, however, it's something that will surpass all expectations and then some.
Anchorman tells the story of 1970s San Diego news Anchor Ron Burgundy and his time as the most respected Anchorman in the San Diego area. Him and his team, Brian Fantana (Rudd), Brick Tamland (Steve Carell)&Champ Kind (David Koechner) are brought into peril when an aspiring woman Anchor is brought into the team. Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) is brought into the news office due to complaints of lack of diversity. This woman is strong and no matter how hard the main news team will try, she's not going to be put off from her goal to be Anchorwoman. Ron manages to use his charm and his ability to play the Jazz Flute (No Inuendo intended) to win over Veronica and they end up dating. She wants to keep it quiet because it will peril her career, but Ron being a mans man tells San Diego live on air that they're sleeping together. Through another series of unfortunate events Ron Burgundys dog baxter is killed leading to him being late for newscast. Seizing her chance, Veronica takes charge and becomes Anchorwoman for the one show to the dismay of Ron. Because she was so successful she is promoted to co-anchor and the relationship is off.
I'm tempted to tell you the entire story but I wont. It is awesome though and is one of the most bizarre, childish and intelligent comedies I've ever seen. People would try to knock this film slightly by saying it's not as funny as his prior film, Old School but it's definitely much much funnier. The over the top acting of Ferrell is worth it alone as I could watch him in his outrageous emotional state after Baxter was killed, all day. Steve Carell is also another shining light in the film as he plays the dumb weather guy who's the over the top idiot that comes out with hysterically stupid things. "I stabbed a guy in the heart" the way he said it has to be witnessed as it's just classic Carell.
One of my favourite lines from the movie which occurred in the opening credits as it was just so unexpected and very very silly. "The human torch was denied a bank loan" is an absolute classic which I think many people will agree with. Also the fight between the different channels news teams is also a classic as it features cameos from one of the greatest comic actors in Ben Stiller as the Spanish language news Anchor. I could honestly go on and on about how crazily funny this film is but I would give everything away. All I can say to wrap this up is you will need to watch it more than once in order to catch all the jokes as some you will miss the first time around. Anchorman is a hilarious movie about a successful anchorman(Will Farrell) newscaster in San Diego who later gets his reputation tarnished by his sidekick(Christina Applegate).
In addition to why I liked this movie so much, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN's Christina Applegate was sexy as usual and better looking and the most talented I have ever seen her throughout her whole acting career and I think Christina Applegate did an astonishing performance in this movie as well, not to mention she was definetly eyecandy in this movie.
I also enjoyed all the oldies songs they played from the 70's like "Use Me" by Bill Withers, "Who's That Lady", etc., plus I enjoyed all the outtakes they showed us at the end of ANCHORMAN as well, which were quite a crack-up.
So if you're looking for a funny movie with Christina Applegate or Will Farrell in it, I highly recommend ANCHORMAN to you. If you are a fan of Christina Applegate, maybe it's worth watching. As usual, she is just astonishing. I also liked the 70's soundtrack. But that's it. Just sketches after sketches. The one where he plays the flute in a restaurant is too long and not funny. I don't know why people like Will Farrell's movies. if you have any sense of humor at all, you'll like this movie. this movie consists of will ferrel, steve carrell, vince vaughn and luke wilson. if you like random comedy, such as talk about hand grenades, tridents and guys on fire, then watch this movie. Its the 70s&ron burgundy is the king of san diego - the most popular anchorman in town. In rons world women dont belong in the newsroom unless theyre doing cooking segments. So when rising star reporter veronice corningstone fills in for ro one night&ratings soar it makes him think. And thats not easy! Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 08/22/2006 Starring: Will Ferrell Vince Vaughn Run time: 103 minutes Rating: Ur Will Farrell followed up his star-making vehicleElf, which matched his fine-tuned comic obliviousness to a sweet sincerity, with a more arrogant variation on the same character: Ron Burgundy, a macho, narcissistic news anchor from the 1970s. Along with his news posse--roving reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd,Clueless), sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), and dim-bulb weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell,Bruce Almighty)--Burgundy rules the roost in San Diego, fawned upon by groupies and supported by a weary producer (Fred Willard,Best In Show) who tolerates Burgundy's ego because of good ratings. But when Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate,View from the Top) arrives with ambitions to become an anchor herself, she threatens the male-dominated newsroom.Anchormanhas plenty of funny material, but it's as if Farrell couldn't decide what he really wanted to mock, and so took smart-ass cracks at everything in sight. (The Long Hot Summer)
(Great Summer)
(long hot summer) Love this movie! I cannot tell you how many times I have seen this movie. All the actors are excellent in this and Paul.....whew, looks Great!! Paul and Joanne at their best. This and "Cat on..." are both in the same category...excellent movies at their best!!! This was a great movie in excellent condition and received on time. I really appreciate it and will keep ordering.
Thank you, Barbara P. This is one of my favorite "summer movies" that I remember from when I was growing up. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are wonderful together. this movie oozes heat. The acting is superb. great movie for the collector. Paul Newman has his glorious youthful swagger in this southern-fried melodrama, which marked his first picture with Joanne Woodward (they married after shooting ended). The script is a melange of William Faulkner stories, although it appears more under the influence of Tennessee Williams andPicnicthan the Nobel Prize winner. Drifter Newman catches the eye of schoolmarm Woodward and her father, a rural Mississippi bigshot (Orson Welles). This is not one of Welles's better moments; he appears to be conducting make-up experiments. There is some enjoyable flapdoodle along the way, in the Freud-meets-Gone with the Windmanner of '50s southern cooking, but the ending is embarrassingly compromised. The same production team would leave out the box-office concessions a few years later onHud. A studly Newman |
