(Muffled vocals ruin an otherwise enjoyable concert) 『The line up of 60's and 70's soulsters is interesting - an eclectic mixture of the well known and the not so famous. The backing orchestration and vocals are excellent. However, everything unravels when the lead vocals commence. The singers all sound as if there was a curtain between them and the microphone when the recordings were made. It is not just a matter of 60 year old vocal chords being weaker than 20 year old. It is not the obvious lack of proper balance between the audience noise and the music. The simple problem is that the vocals were not mixed at the correct volume. I can understand such a problem with a 1960 concert. This is a 2003 production! I am perplexed.』 『There were a lot of bald heads, bad backs, and big bellies crowded into Pittsburgh's Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, both onstage and off, for this November 2002 concert, and it's apparent that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. (A winner.) 『Go to iTunes. Check out the entire album. I think you'll be hooked. Buy the CD from Amazon, load it into your iTunes, and then send it on. She can sing jazz / blues to rival Norah Jones, but unlike Nora who really can't succeed on a big stage / huge open arena, Colleen Duffy can handle a huge venue.
First thoughts: Blondie. The voice of Deborah Harry singing jazz. But unlike Blondie, Devil Doll is more than the siren. The band rocks. Listen to "King of Brooklyn" -- you'll hear a bit of the Beatles-like instrumentals.』

My favorite song is probably Things You Make Me Do (great lap dance song). I also love 16 Days, Bourbon In Your Eyes, Driven To Distraction, and Liquor Store. All very sexy songs.

If you like outrageous, this is for you. Dean and the Weenies singing "F*** You" in artsy cool, the guy who bites the head off the rat then sets fireworks off on himself, Karen Finley's psychotic rant-as-art, Phoebe Legere singing about "Marilyn", truly capture an era that is, for the most part, gone. It is both documentary and art entertainment. You might like or not like what you see, but you won't be bored.』
(Classic New York Underground film...) 『Mondo New York is a rare documentation of New York's East Village performance art scene when it was just about to boil over into the mainstream. Many of the performers went on to become stars while others unfortunately died way too young (Charlie Barnett, John Sex), shortly after the movie was produced. This film is a must-see for anyone who is interested in the New York underground art scene. It may be the only chance for one to witness the energy of a lost decade. The vitality of the performers is palpable. I highly recommend this film to anyone interest in either performance art or New York subcultures. (Rare Cult Classic) 『This video is hard to find! If you can get your hands on a copy, get it! It is based on the underground world of New York City's experimental artists. Some scenes are shocking and may be too disturbing for those faint of heart. The opening number performed by the phenomenal Phoebe Legere is worth the cost of the entire video alone. Legere is said to have over four octaves and is able to play seven instruments. She has the body of a Playboy centerfold and has a brain too. She is a graduate of Vassar University in music composition. In this video she does a very provocative homage to Marilyn Monroe. The video also includes a lot of controversial acts including a man who bites off the heads of rats, cockfights, an authentic voodoo ritual with an animal sacrifice, and an assortment of other freakish performers including Lydia Lunch, Annie Sprinkle, and Joey Aria (all legends in the underground entertainment world). You would still buy the movie. I watched this on HBO for the first two season's and then cancelled HBO I then subscribed again for the last season and wish I had not missed any of them. So like a good little fan I purchased all of the season's 1-6.1. I would stay up until 2 or 3 am watching these fantastic women go through the journey of love and friendship. It made me want to move to New York. I live in Los Angeles and have been on my job for over 25 years, I still want to move to New York because of these wonderful women and their wonderful characters. I love this DVD as well as the previous 5 and I have purchased the first movie and can't wait until the next movie come out. When I need to laugh I watch SEX and the City. I love them all but Samantha is my favorite.』
(More fun in the big apple) 『In these initial episodes from the show's final season, "Sex and the City" is as bawdy and fun as ever. A generous collection of rich character moments, both funny and serious, ratchet up the quality even further. These dozen episodes illustrate the maturity of the show: there's not a bad one in the bunch, with things like old flames Mr. Big (Chris Noth), and Steve (David Eigenberg) popping in with deeper resiliency. And the show is still flat-out funny. Berger is the most intrinsically humorous of Carrie's beaus (his introduction to Prada is a classic), Jarrod's earnest streak on Samantha gets her flabbergasted in the giddiest ways, and Charlotte's attempt to convert to Judaism is right in character. The touchstone episode is "A Woman's Right to Shoes," in which Carrie loses her prized and expensive Manolo Blahniks at a party. The comedy blends serious points of how we perceive singles, couples, and parents (and the gifts we lavish on the latter two). I admit that I went to see it, expecting another leftist political propaganda movie from Hollywood, full of the usual cliches. You can argue either way that it is and it is not, but like Dead Man Walking, it does a superb balancing act. It starts out portraying the grim statistics of the present day and the contemporary characters are nothing if not contemptible (the mother is chasing after a single guy, leaving the kids alone; the sister is a cheap whore). The teenage boy takes refuge in overdosing on a 50s black and white TV show where you have a nuclear family and the horrors of contemporary life are absent, and then he is catapulted there. Once there, however, things are bland, too bland. Once he starts introducing books into the kids's lives and once the slut starts screwing around anything with pants, color begins to come into the picture. Unfortunately, things start to break down and some people suddenly start to act in a decidedly nasty way and the parents break up. Definitely an original film. It is surprising that Hollywood produced it.』

("Where's My Blu-Ray?") 『Seriously, was "Pleasantville" the best movie of the 1990's? I know I'm overlooking a lot of superlative work to say that but I just happened to watch it again last night and got clobbered all over by its wonderous ingenuity and charm. "Pleasantville" is a movie I NEVER get tired of and by golly, now that it's only $5.99 to buy it new you really have no excuse but to give it a shot.
I will forgo a synopsis here because so many other reviewers preceding me have already done so. Let me just observe that if you want to experience full-frontal allegory, you cannot do better than this. There is so much symbolism and social commentary gently packaged in this sweet parable of an Eisenhower era sitcom come to life! I must confess for this 51 year old reviewer the demographic and generational arrows launched by "Pleasantville" score a direct hit on my boomer-era heart. I would hope younger viewers unaware of the '50's TV conventions being employed as background here can still understand the social strictures and conventions referenced, and even if they can't, can still marvel at the incredible comic/dramatic performances AND the spectacular b&w/color photography that is SO important to the storytelling.
The cast--KILLER! Reese Witherspoon, Tobey McGuire, Jeff Daniels, Bill Macy (where's my dinner!), J.T. Walsh (alas! His last role--RIP)--all sublime REALLY in every respect. But I gotta RAVE at you about just how POWERFUL and INTENSE Joan Allen's performance as an archetypal sitcom mom awakening slowly, and painfully, to a fully 3-D technicolor life, turns out to be (the same journey the entire town takes, albeit grudgingly). I believe this was my first exposure to Joan and her tortured but determined journey depicted here still gives me shivers. I can't imagine any other actress giving such a finely calibrated and sympathetic portrayal. This performance--really ALL of "Pleasantville"--are prime examples of just how GOOD "comedy" acting can be. So much more than just slapstick here!
I can't overlook Don Knotts--who better to provide 1950's "cred" than Barney Fife himself? If you can find it, check out the criminally forgotten Knotts movie The Love God? for Don at his most comically surreal; Yeah, maximum "guilty pleasure" for your reviewer, but I love the outrageous '70's Dacron Polyester Mens' fashion parade and especially the hysterical courtroom faceoff; Don goes on trial as a porn merchant, and gets denounced in open court as a "capering libertine, a lecherous goat, partaking in depraved orgies"--Truly comedy from beyond space and time as we know it!
For those of us who remember the 1950's, "Pleasantville" is ESSENTIAL viewing that will pluck every emotional string you still have. No doubt there are stone hearts who can watch and not be moved, but I'm certainly not one of them. So many memorable"able lines of dialogue too: "I don't WANT it to go away!!!" "Those are Whitey's cookies!" "Where's My Dinner!" "You're safe for now, you're in a bowling alley!" "I'm wearing three pounds of underwear here!" "You can pin me anytime!" And I could go on--share your own favorites later.
Also highly recommended, and on a similar wavelength: Matinee [Import] starring John Goodman as an early '60's schlock horror movie producer flogging his new monster epic as the all-too-real terror of the Cuban Missle Crisis unfolds. (Pretty good) 『I found this sleeve to be not as great as most people say, but still pretty good. It is not as tight as some because of the large holes inside, though those voids provide a nice "slurpy" effect. The material is very thick, and should withstand gentle use equal to more expensive toys. It's also a bit longer than the average 4"-5" toy which is nice, though many will still find themselves poking out the end--and losing all the lube inside. If you only read one chapter, the final "What Boys Need" is best. Yet fathers, teachers, youth leaders--anyone helping boys move into the "Big Impossible" (the authors' reference for manhood) will find the entire book valuable.』
