Idols in particular (okay, Mini-LP) sealed the deal in terms of my love for Sonic Youth back in the mid-80's. 'Bad Moon Rising' and 'EVOL' were my introductions to the band, but these completed the picture for me. A filling in of all the gaps that those records had opened up in terms of what could be done with sound/noise. They paved the way, and opened my mind to what music could be and how it could be made that has coloured my listening over the last 20 years. Although I don't play them so much anymore - a time thing, rather than a quality thing - it is safe to say that my life wouldn't be be the same without them. Must be strange discovering them now though? No, they don't sound like Daydream Nation (which was a source of great disappointment back then too...only for the opposite reason...if you get my drift...)』
(THIS is the Sonic Youth you keep hearing about) 『I have heard Daydream Nation, Goo, Dirty, Sister, EVOL and there were moments on all of them that I liked. Still, I never felt any of those albums went into the territory of pure noise that I had heard Sonic Youth would go into and would be such an inspiration for Cobain. Then I hear "(She's In A) Bad Mood" and can see that Cobain stole the ending of the song for his own "Aneurysm".
This is not a pretty album, this is not for everyone by any means. But it's pure noise and I love it. "Kill Yr Idols" the song definitely achieves the menace the Sex Pistols were going for, blowing away any sign of melody with a vengeance. It's awesome.
Sometimes you hear music that's so absorbing you can't think about anything else, and on that note I don't think this album will ever be background music, ever. There is no real structure to most of these songs, they're just songs, and after hearing enough verse chorus songs (which I do love by the way) to make my head explode, this album is a great change.
If I had just heard of this band and this was the first music of theirs I had heard, and you told me that millions of people loved them. Well, I would be surprised, but I would also think that was really great.』
(Beautiful Mess) 『I don't like to give albums 5 stars unless they truly are a fave of mine. CiS comes close, but not quite. I wouldv'e given 4 1/2 if it was an option.
So this album is a mess. A brilliant mess of untuned guitars, stunning yet detached bass playing, and dissonant drumming (strange for a noise album). In My opinon this is Kims best album. Her vocals, while abrasive and completly out of tune (how i like it) are intense and grab u by the ears and won't let go untill the end of the song (in some cases longer). Also her Bass playing is pronounced more than usual, especially in her creepy droner Protect Me You. Her tracks are my fave ones on the album (Shaking hell, live Stooges cover I Wanna be Your Dog, and Protect Me You). In fact, I have never heard anything like PMY.
Thurston and Lee are crazy good. If you think the noise songs on Sister and EVOL are too much, hear this. They are not tuneless, they are positively Horrifying. Im scared to turn my volume up to loud, (as much as I want to), as I fear for the safty of my speakers (and my ears). They seem to try as hard as possiby to make the riffs sound bad, and as Bad as they are, it still sound euphoriuc. Although in my opinion their more structured than Evol and BMR, just in a different way. I prefer this to their later noise rock of plain guitar screeches. Here its just scary. Nightmarish as other reviewers say.
The drumming, is not Steve Shelley. I love him to death, but i think for the sake of this album it is a good thing. There doesn't seem to be much of a rhythem, probably because you can barely hear the drumming in parts, even though thy're not exactly quite. I wouldn't be suprised if the drummer (names escaped me) didn't even use a drum kit half the time. He might well have been smashing a bamboo stick on a dinner table. Theres absolutly NO structure to his drumming. And its perfect.
The added KYI EP is excellent. Dont buy the album without it. Shaking Hell live is awesome, and of course Kill Your Idols...
Buy it, but beware, it'll freak the hell out of you, and may find yourself regretting the purchase. Actually don't buy it if u found albums like Daydream Nation hard to get through, cos you won't have a chance.』
(Good times with the Youth...) 『I don't know why everyone keeps saying this album is simply "artistic" chaotic noise. Sure it's loud, and often harsh, but it's also very dance-worthy. Songs like 'Nature Scene' and 'Inhuman' have a pretty solid rhythm flowing throughout. Buy this one to play loud in the car or on Halloween!

'Daydream Nation' is a much louder album. It's not pop but believe me if you like their other albums you will like this. Everyone acts like 'Goo' and 'Dirty' were so mainstream, they are good records but this is better by far.

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Maybe not entirely Bram's, but an excellent adaptation...) 『I was excited back in the day when this film was released; one of my best friends and I were ardent horror fans back then, and had both often talked of someone doing "Dracula" as it was written...I had seen Franco's "Count Dracula" on late-night television, but was anxious to see a big budget, and hopefully even more faithful, adaptation of Stoker's work.
I wasn't disappointed, per se, although I did have a major issue (more on that in a minute), but overall, I very, very much enjoyed the movie. The pageantry and scope of the scenery was marvelous. I was spellbound by the cinematography, and the eerie shadows and unearthly feel of the film, especially the sequences in Castle Dracula. I was a little put off by the red, Oriental-appearing garb that the Count wore in the beginning (although I understood the symbolism), but all in all Coppola's style and techniques made the film a very well-woven tapestry of dread and gothic style.
As far as performances go, I thought all of the acting was very well done (although I'm not a fan of Keanu Reeves' wooden style), but the standout to me was Anthony Hopkins. I dare say that his portrayal of Professor Van Helsing is the DEFINITIVE version...I take nothing from Peter Cushing, but from the book, I always pictured him as more of a swashbuckling, mystical man, one who spoke his mind and was perhaps a bit irreverent in his conviction...in short, EXACTLY as Hopkins performed him.
Now, for my issue: I was disappointed with the whole "reincarnation of lost love" theme that Coppola went with. Not only is this an old trick, but had no place in the novel at all. The only love story in the book is the love of the men who would sacrifice all to save a virtuous woman from the blackest of evil. I had looked forward to a monstrous and menacing Dracula as he was in Stoker's story, and while Oldman did a brilliant job, I was chagrined at the character being so sympathetic and played as a romantic lead. Whereas it did the movie in and of itself justice, to proclaim to be "Bram Stoker's Dracula", the addition of this element flew in the face of that claim. While I know this was done to draw a larger audience, the movie could have been as well done and beautiful without this contrivance.
A very good movie, in every way, and I highly recommend it...would have been a five-star rating if not for that one glaring departure from the story.

Dracula is everything that you can ever find in a tale about vampires. The gothic settings, the excellent performances (even Keanu does a good job here!), the blood, the music, the pacing, the cinematography, the dark humor, I mean everything about it is done right. Don't get me wrong about the legendary original 1931 film; it's a classic and still stands on its own. But I'm more for the remake. It has big-time actors such as Gary Oldman playing Dracula himself, Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing, and Winona Ryder as Mina. Francis Ford Coppola has created another masterpiece, even though it isn't even in the same league as The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now. Avoid Twilight as much as possible: Bram Stoker's Dracula is the one that must be watched (and read).』
(Awesome visuals ....but .....) 『This movie has some of the best horror cinematography I have ever seen. (And I have seen them all). It shows photography work that has never been seen before- nor since. This is by far the best Dracula "visual" ever! My main complaint is the story is mostly a visual and lacks certain elements of the acting style that we have been accustomed to in the 21st century. For example when Johnathan Harker spends all the time in Draculas castle, he sees strange things and he does not react to them. From mirrors breaking, to seeing Dracula climbing the castle walls and the weird shadow play - Harker acts like nothing is out of the ordinary. That is by far the films worst downfall. THe story line is pretty much the basic Bram Stoker story. But I will emphasize- the visuals are stunning and horrifying in this movie!』

At first I never used lubricant and everything was fine, but it was always a bit difficult to just 'slide' in and the in and out movements were always a bit rough. There are chapters in this book that should be read by every young, happy couple. I always prided myself on not being a jealous-type. I didn't think women were supposed to have anxieties about their husbands having female friends any more, not since the 50s I thought. To be honest, six months ago, if I had read the perspective of Shirley Glass on how emotional affairs develop, I may have imagined her to be of the era of Miss Manners. With all the hard lessons of the last few months, I have to say that Shirley Glass has it nailed. She is very balanced and quite simply correct in this regard.
The other thing this book covers better than most is the heart-wrenching reality of ambivalence. I never guessed in a million years that my husband would have been unfaithful to me. Having said that, one would imagine that surely the "appropriate" reaction from the husband upon discovery would be something like, "Oh, my dear, I am so sorry. I will never see her again. I'll make it up to you. I promise. Please take me back". This is the first book that covers the alternative (and, very very painful) reaction of "I'm sorry you found out. I might want you back, but I'm not sure. In the meantime, I do love her and am not prepared to give her up. I'll try to break it off with her, but I don't want to hurt her." Ambivalence. Possibly as painful as the actual betrayl. This is the first time I heard this was a "normal" reaction and began to understand what it is about. It helped me to not turn my back prematurely on my 15 year marriage. If it doesn't work out, I'll know I did what I could.』

Or I imagine another person checking the Advanced section to see where they stand, dismissing it as vanilla and passe, and patting themselves on the back for staying ahead of print.
