(A Most Pleasant Find)
『If you've never heard the music of the Revolting Cocks (REVCO) before, this is the release to buy (Although I love Cocked and Loaded and Beers, Steers, and Queers, etc.). Despite what other fans/critics of the music have stated in their reviews about the band not sounding the same in this new, updated 2009 configuration, I found the musicianship and compositions to be outstanding. Every track on this release is ultra-strong.

This is a side-project of Illinois' (and now Texas') Ministry, but REVCO seems to be grounded in a spirit of humor (some dark, some sophomoric) and musical experimentation - with pounding drum beats (programmed and live), nasty distorted guitar riffs, and lots of excellent "noise" (samples and such) thrown in for good measure.

There are techno aspects and some industrial-metal aspects to the band's sound, but it's difficult to categorize their music under the aegis of one sound, or genre. There are those who will probably vehemently disagree with what I am about to say: if you are a fan of Steve Albini and Big Black (Chicago band), then you'll truly appreciate REVCO (2009),there's a similar philosophy of music, here, but not necessarily a similar style of music that the two bands share. One requires the same mind-set in order to truly appreciate these groups.

The CD art on Sex-O Olympic-O is outstanding, a throwback to pulp art, old movie posters and soft cover detective (private dick) novels. Stand out tracks (although, as stated above, one will not be skipping tracks on this disk) are as follows: Hookerbot 3000; Red Parrot; Robo Bandidos; Cousins; Lude Ferigno; and, the spectacular I'M NOT GAY!

It's listed as a 2009 release for 13th Planet Music, and I got it at a second-hand shop for next to nothing. I'm just happy that the person that traded this disk in didn't have what it takes to appreciate this band, because quite literally, this is one of the best music purchases I've made this year.

In fact, I traded an o-so-lame Black Label Society CD for it.

(Green Andy Reviews: The Revolting Cocks - Sex-O Olympic-O)
『So bandleader Al Jourgenson considers this record to be one of the best he's ever made, to the point where he's thinking about postponing his retirement from music as a result? I'm sure he's not taking my opinion into account, but if he really considers this album to be that great, I think his judgment might be impaired enough where retirement could be a good idea. Sex-O Olympic-O isn't the worst album ever made, but it's surprisingly tired-sounding and not nearly as funny or outrageous as the group seems to think it is.

This latest version of the band, with new vocalist Josh Bradford and rhythm section Sin Quinn and Clayton Worbeck, do a pretty faithful recreation of the group's Wax Trax Records-derived industrial rock, with loping post-punk bass lines and rigid drums pounding away behind the heavy guitars and monotone keyboards. Although the production is loud and punchy, the music itself sounds curiously dated, like these are remastered tracks from 1988 or so. The percussion occasionally bursts into a more modern glammy stomp, but other than that, this is nothing we haven't heard before. Industrial clichés abound, like the clubby opening to "I'm Not Gay", and likewise Bradford's distorted snarl seems to be trying hard to replicate Chris Connelly's classic vocals, but he lacks the former Cocks contributor's sense of dignity. Of course, the material he's got to work with is way inferior. Obviously this isn't supposed to be a serious band, but they used to be enjoyably funny. Songs like "Hookerbot 3000" and "Lude Ferrigno" are just stupid, even by the group's sophomoric standards.

Al Jourgenson has a signature production style, and nothing he makes is ever completely worthless, and some of the music here does work despite the corny lyrics, like "Robo Bandidos" and "Abundant Redundancy", and in particular "Red Parrot" is about the most successful song on the album at capturing the sleazy sense of fun that falls so flat on the other songs. But overall, this record misses way more often than it hits, so unless you're an Al Jourgenson creepy superfan, I'd steer clear of it.』

(A strong 70s dance feel mixed with some 90s techno/industrial)
『The Good
"HookerBot3000" is out future according to the band, and it's set to a seductive beat. Al Jourgensen's signature vocal effect portray a futuristic feel and time. "Red Parrot" delivers some commanding guitars to the hypnotic beats that the group have been putting forth thus far. Clearly the Revolting Cocks has an affliction for a robotic future as they delve into the future of cowboys with "Robo Banditos." No subject is too taboo for the REVCO with "Cousins." Despite its cringe inducting implications, the track is rather catchy. "Abundant Redundancy" is an all out aural assault with guitars and electronic effect fighting it out for your attention.

The Bad
Do you like your Al Jourgensen hard rock or techno/industrial?

The Verdict
It's good to hear that Jourgensen hasn't walked away from the music scene, only Ministry (for now I'm sure). If you've never heard the Revolting Cocks before (like me) than you'll be surprised to hear a strong 70s dance feel mixed with some 90s techno/industrial. Think early Ministry or KMFDM with less guitars. Sex-O Olympic-O is just as hot and powerful as any Ministry album, just with fewer guitars and angry rants. The album is highly sexual and taboo at times, and is set to some of the most come-hither beats you'll ever hear.』

『Wow- if you only saw this movie on TV what a difference the real deal is! Get ready for some hard language. If you don't mind then you'll really get the jist of this movie. I wouldn't have it any other way- get the movie and get ready for some real laughs!』

(Apatow's "one")
『Normally adolescent humor, Apatow comes through with this (thanks to Carell's writing and acting.

I don't normally care for the "Oscars" (or awards shows in general) but I remember in 2005 the intense debate (hype) to figure out what would be the "best film" of 2005. There was Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Good Night, and Good Luck, and Munich. Personally, I would rather watch Munich again over all those movies. But other notables were Syriana and 40 year old Virgin.

Crash would win "best flim" and Phillip Hoffamn for "best performance". But this movie will be the most remembered and most watched of the entire lot for the decades to come and Carroll's performance should of at least nominated him the for the funky award (ala, Cary Grant).』

(amusing and easy to watch)
『My girlfriend called this one and I enjoyed it in spite of lower expectations. A comic take on the social dynamics of sexual attraction, the show picks low hanging fruits and squeezes them into humorade - enjoyable and easy to drink :)

The characters are flat, and there are no surprises before the final credit sequence.. wow! The movie doesn't take itself seriously, so we don't have to - we can laugh at our ridiculous society and how obsessed we are with sex, being sexy, and every perception thereof.

Set in Los Angeles and clearly inspired by San Francisco's 40 Days and 40 Nights, I wish the creators had weaved a strand or two of LA culture (ala L.A. Story (15th Anniversary Edition)) into the film.』

『Andy (Steve Carell) works at an electronic store as a stock boy. Andy also plays video games and collects comics and rare toys. Andy's weekend of fun is buying the ingredients for an egg salad sandwich...and making it. Andy is 40 years old. Andy is also a virgin.

Within the store that Andy works at are a bunch of guys who do what most guys do. Talk crap to one another (in a `friend' way), play poker, go clubbing, lookin for the chickys, and even going to see donkey shows. Well, Andy doesn't really fit in with the rest of the group, but one day the rest of the guys ask Andy to fill in at the poker game because one of the regulars won't be there. During the game the guys start talking about sex and women, and Andy makes the mistake of saying boobs feel like a bag of sand. Thanks to this mistake the guys figure out he's still a virgin. And instead of making his life a living hell, they decide to help him out in the ways they know how.

This movie has made me laugh so many times and in so many spots. Judd Apatow (writer, director, and producer) has the exact same kind of comedy as me. And to me that comedy is just straight stupid and non-caring and perverse and quick witted and spontaneous...and ... and... well... there is just so much more. Thankfully Apatow has made it in the movie business because the networks sure didn't let him succeed on T.V. (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared). Also I'm happy that Apatow has kept a lot of his actors from his T.V. shows and starred or co-starred them in his movies, Like Seth Rogen for instance. To me, Seth was just not that funny at all in Freaks and Geeks, but now he's one of my favorite actors for a comedy. I've seen The 40-Year Old Virgin around 20 times since it came out in theaters and I still laugh at it in many spots.

The only bad thing I can say about this movie is that it just isn't for everyone. Some people's humor is just so far gone or to snobbish that they'll never like a movie like this. There is a lot of cussing, perverse jokes, and even nudity. And that's ok that it's not for everyone, but for the people that cant stand movies like this... how do you not know what you are getting into before you watch something like this?

In the end, I would say BUY this movie if you love to laugh at some crude humor. Stay away if you don't.

P.S. I would love to be in an Apatow movie.

『This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film

Repulsion is a film directed by Roman Polanski and is his first English language film. It is about two sisters from Belgium who are living together in a London apartment. While one goes on vaction, the other decends into schizophrenia and madness. The film is a psychological thriller and was given an X rating in the UK upon its release. It is indeed dusturbing and I recommend it not be shown to children.

Unlike the previous Roman Polanski film released on DVD by the Criterion Collection, Knife in the Water, it is possible to pause this film, and to scan the film forwards and backwards.

The DVD includes a 2003 documentary on the film's production, a 1964 French documentary about the film's production, Audio commentary from 1994 with Roman Polanski and actress Catherine Deneuve, and two theatrical trailers.』

(Gripping, Riveting, Frightening, Hypnotic!)
『"Repulsion" is Roman Polanski's disturbing look at a woman (Catherine Deneuve) gradually going mad. Polanski takes us into the mind of Carol Ledoux, a French manicurist working in London. In the streets outside the beauty salon is a world where leering men send her into a panic. In bed each night, she waits, petrified, until her sister (Yvonne Furneaux) and her married lover come home to the apartment next door and engage in their their noisy nocturnal recreation.
When the lovers leave for a holiday in Italy, Carol descends into madness as her sexual repression triggers hallucinations that drive her to murder. Simple objects become dreaded portents, silence is broken by buzzing flies, dripping water, and a ticking clock. Soon, she imagines that someone is in the apartment to rape her. Polanski is adept at using the claustrophobic apartment as breeding ground for Carol's myriad escalating fears and visions. This is the kind of movie that makes you look over your shoulder and make sure the doors are locked.
Polanski would later go on to direct "The Tenant," a movie with a similar theme, and the hugely popular "Rosemary's Baby." "Repulsion" is an atypical horror film, since the terror is all in Carol's mind, and we are witnessing events through a frightened, paranoid woman's eyes. Ms. Deneuve is superb in a chilling role.
Bluray bonus extras include audio commentary featuring Polanski and Ms. Deneuve; the 2003 featurette "A British Horror Film," on the making of "Repulsion;" a 1964 French TV documentary filmed on the set of "Repulsion" showing Polanski and Deneuve at work; and original theatrical trailers. The new print is a high-definition digital transfer, approved by Polanski himself.』

In any case, this film was quite effective at depicting, a character on the edge of sanity, who is schizophrenic, and has paranoid delusions, which leads to violence and psychosis. The films, visual elements carries the story through expressive camerawork and lighting, and only uses sparse dialogue, to tell Carol's story. A different approach to a similar theme of mental illness, was the film A Beautiful Mind, by Ron Howard, which also deals with schizophrenia, and paranoid delusions, but is presented in such a way so that the viewers can identify with what the central character is going through, although, it's hard to tell, what's reality or fiction, and what is just a form of storytelling for the screen.』

Roman Polanski's impeccably shot horror film about a repressed women devolving into madness inside her apartment complex, Repulsion doesn't have the urgency that the director would bring to Rosemary's Baby three years later but it's a worthy film in its own right, delivering chills on a fairly regular basis and featuring a dementedly good performance by Denueve in the lead; if you like horror that doesn't involve a masked serial killer than pop this one into your DVD player of choice.

『...being in the audience of a theater that was showing this for the first time back in the 1960s. The slow decay of the star is even unnerving in this day and age and I'm sure it was a shock back then. It was an enjoyable movie and was pretty disturbing, but thanks to all the desensitization of the modern age, it will probably lose some of its scarier parts due to the fact that it's just not "that scary" nowadays. The star really made it seem like to the viewer that you were truly watching someone unravel. The Criterion version has a nice crisp transfer in B&W and it is great! Recommended!!』

『After watching 'My Best Friend's Girl', I expected this film to be really funny. With a cast like this it's pretty hard to fail, but in some ways...it does. The mix of raunchy and romance is really a little jarring at times and the whole porno movie thing is really just a backdrop for a routine romantic comedy with a lot of profanity. It's a shame because I would have liked this film to continue on after the porno was made. It's not a bad film, but I expected more from this crew. The DVD transfer is excellent and the 2 disc edition has some interesting extras.』

『Porn has gone mainstream! Twenty years ago it was something quiet and shameful; relegated to curtained-off areas of your local non-chain video store. Before that, all there was were creepy little theatres showing such epics as "Behind the Green Door", and "Deep Throat".

Now, though, it's so mainstream it seems like anyone can do it, and that's the thrust, as it were, of "Zack and Miri Make a Porno", or, as it says on the box where I bought it, "Zack and Miri", cause the retailer is willing to make money off it, but they don't want to risk offending anyone who might see the word "porno".

And make no mistake; this is a potentially very offensive movie. It's also incredibly hilarious, and one of Kevin Smith's best!

The plot centers around Zack and Miri, two people in their late-twenties who are desperate for money. They've lost their power, they've lost their water and they're facing eviction. What ever are they to do?

Then they come up with an idea: make a porno. Not just any porno, mind you, but "Star Whores", a geekfest porno, featuring all the action geeks think they might like to some day see. Events spiral from there, plans get changed, the movie gets changed, and there's a lot of nudity and gross-out humor.

I must say, I laughed my backside off at this film. It's like all the best of a Kevin Smith movie mixed with some of Apatow's better works. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn hilarious! I never laughed so hard as I did when I saw someone get their cake frosted, as it were. Sure, it was predictable, but still great. Plus, hey, as I said in the title, if you've ever wanted to see Jason Mewes naked, now you can.

I'm glad to see that Kevin Smith is branching out beyond the View Askewniverse. He's got some real talent and it's nice to see him display that here. This movie isn't for everyone, but fans of his previous work, as well as movies like "Superbad" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" will likely have a great time!』
