The whole Sudoku scene took off here in May of 2005,in a little 'freebie' newspaper in boxes at transit stops.Over the next couple of months books started to appear in the bookstores. I've written reviews on several of them and discuss what one should look for in a good one.First,there should be good coverage on the background of the puzzle,then good instructions on hints and methods for solving;particularly if one is just gettind started.Then the size of the grid should be at least 3"X3",preferably larger.By the way, The Toronto Star has just increased their grid from 31/2" to 5".Next,the paper should be much better than newsprint grade for ease of erasing.The puzzles should be graded in difficulty.One book I reviewed even gave completion times depending on skills.Another thing to consider is how flat the book lies as well as its size,particularly if you intend to carry it around.Finally ,there is the number of puzzles and the price. Now what about this book.Competing books are flooding the shelves.If this book had come our in August or so ,it might not have been too bad.However,it has almost nothing in background or solving methods.The pages are too large,with 4 puzzles per page,and at this stage ,they're on the small size at 3".The puzzles are not graded and there are no time targets.The paper is not too bad,roughly typewriter bond grade.At 8"X10" it is too large to carry around and doesn't lay flat. A couple of months ago books were coming out with 100-300 puzzles;last week I bought one with 1001 puzzles.So,about the only thing this book is 'with it' is that it has 944 puzzles. In summary,this book is late arriving on the scene,nothing exceptional about it,several shortcomings and priced up there with others I would recommend over it. Once again,I would reiterate that Sterling have published high quality puzzle books;and maybe Sudoku is just not their world.It's not that I don't think they couldn't do better ;it's just that they didn't.』

Unknown 20 years ago, Sudoku ("single numbers") skyrocketed since 1984 as Nikoli Publishers (Japan) formalized rules for a 3 x 3 number grid composed of 9 boxes @ using 0-9 numerals but once within @ box&numerals 0-9 but once criss-crossing the grid. The 30 conferred numbers (varies 24-32) determines difficulty of finding&entering those 51 or so (49-57) which are absent. Not always conspicious, supplied numbers inscribe a symmetrical design.
"The Big Book...." consists of 944 puzzles, begins "easy"&progresses to "harder." The format of 4 (four) puzzles per page, each measuring 3" x 3" makes analyses, pencil entries&erasures (if needed) quite easy - and with practice, simple logic, (no math needed) insight develops to spot patterns&formations yielding clues to missing numerals (all answers in back of book). At inception, there is temptation to fill empty squares with every feasibility, - time consuming. In short order, identification of patterns leads to explicit techniques where speed evolves¬ations are few. In high order Sudoku, one of several chosen possibilities which, as puzzle becomes more complete, may prove to be incorrect, thus designating the alternative to be genuine. The sole equipment needed is a lead pencil&eraser plus an inquisitive mind which tunes in logic stations. In you are browsing for challenging experiences in mathematics, this is not that book. However, it is a good, non-pornographic mind memory book that'll help ward off Alzheimer's&is warranted compatible with all iPods. Of many books on Sudoku, this is my favorite.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (HORRIBLE installation and the game playing isn't that great!) 『The installation is slow for such a small simple game as it goes through some sort of verification procedure in which it told me I had errors but loaded anyway. Once I was playing the game it's slow going because you do have to click on the actual number to input it. I didn't have grid line problems like the other reviewer but I found it hard to focus because of the way it highlights both row and column per axis point. It's disconcerting if you aren't used to thinking about the grid that way. The hint feature isn't a hint it's more like it will just do it for you. Also you can't get rid of the hint's input. So if you thought it would give you options or highlight a row or column then think again.
My main complaint however is that it will not allow you to play it without having the original CD in the drive. No matter what. I like to play music in my CD drive while playing games but I guess in their quest to make sure no one cheats them out of one cent my music or any other use I have for the CD drive is just not important. I feel totally ripped off by the company and will attempt to return the game. It got one star because you can actually play the game.』
(A disappointment) 『I am addicted to Sudoku, play online a lot and buy the books. This was my first CD purchase and I am very disappointed in it.
First, you can't just type in the numbers, you have to click on a number on the side of the grid and then click on a square to put it there. It's a very slow way to play and distracting. It's especially annoying as I keep forgetting to click the number and end up putting the wrong number in the grid. I suppose with more play I would get used to it, but I'm not really sure I want to bother.
Second, Sudoku grids need to have clean lines and be easy to read, and this isn't. I spend far too long trying to locate the numbers I have already entered. This doesn't happen with the online games I have played.
I think it must be a memory hog as it runs quite slowly and jerkily at times, my mouse overshooting a square quite frequently. Maybe someone with a newer computer wouldn't have this problem.
There's also no way to reset the statistics or edit users, or to pause a game so the timer stops while you answer the phone, etc.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Disappointing implementation) 『I bought this game after looking at several choices on store shelves, and deciding this was the best choice I bought it. I immediately discovered that my choice was a poor one.
On the surface, this looks like a very capable version of computerized Sudoku, which is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something with LOTS of puzzles, some variety in difficulty levels, the ability to print, and an intuitive GUI for playing. This version does all four of these. For that, it is to be commended - it has the features most serious players will desire.
That said, the implementation and additional features make this game a less than ideal choice.
One of the most annoying features is that it requires the CD to be in the drive when playing, and for some that is inconvenient.
More of an aggravation, though, are the sounds for the game. There is background music that serves only to be distracting. There also happens to be a voice element to announce the numbers as they are placed - the voice sounds very much like you would imagine for an anime schoolgirl that's entirely too happy for her own good. I cut the speakers for that one. With no sound, gameplay is a lot more pleasant and is acceptable.
The game allows the player to show mistakes during play. HOWEVER, once that setting is turned on, it is not possible to turn it off except when there is no game being played. For players that are learning to play, this is fine, but once a player knows the lay of the land, either the current game needs to be quit in order to toggle this setting, or it needs to be turned off at initial launch.
In the box with the CD was a bright orange card that stated that there was an update to the game available to patch a problem with printing. While I realize that this likely went in the box after the golden image was sent to the duplicator, it still is annoying to find that your brand new game is already outdated.
I looked for another Sudoku game the very next day and found a better one with more features, a better interface, and a smaller price tag. If you want a good Sudoku game for your computer, I cannot recommend Play at Joe's Sudoku Challenge unless there are no other options available. Your money is better spent on other choices.』

I bought this version because I wanted a CD, rather than paying for a software key that could get lost. Boy did I miss the point! This game REQUIRES the CD to start. Who does it that way today and why? I like to play games like this while I'm busy with other tasks, like burning copies of home movies for relatives. Unless I remember to start the game first, I'm out of luck. And I've got to keep that CD on my desk, available in case I want to play it. In other words, I DON'T play it, I'm back to playing Solitare. I spent $20 on a totally worthless game.』
(Great Brain Food!) 『I got hooked on Sudoku when I traveled to the UK on business. Everyone there was doing puzzles daily. I got caught up in the madness! The gold spike system for keeping track of your potential numbers is very clever. There are nine holes in each space that you can use to mark with a nail your possiblities. Because all the numbers take the same spot (i.e. the first hole is a one, the second two, the third three, etc.) it's easy to see at a glance what numbers are available and where the patterns are.
The game comes with a book that has Sudoku puzzles of different levels and also strategies on how to narrow down possible numbers. When you can see the patterns quickly and easily it makes the game that much more fun. I think the spike system makes this the best Sudoku game on the market.
The seller, Elversen Puzzle, was excellent. They kept me informed on the delivery and the packaging was superb.
