customer 's review (Sudoku)
(Fun, but these are not valid Sudoku puzzles!)
(An Excellent Choice)
(Not for the serious Sudoku fan)
(GREAT!) Hi, I feel in love with this type of puzzle. I wanted to get an electronic version of it, I went with this one. The game play is very easy with this one. Very simple navagation, just select your number and touch the screen were you want to number to go. There is one draw back and to me it is a big one. The numbers are to small and to hard to see unless you have very bright lighting in the room. I received this as a gift this past Christmas, and it's been quite a bit of fun to play with. The first thing I do on the train to work each morning is the Sudoku puzzle in the paper, and I'd often get bored on the ride home. The endless puzzles in this game keep me occupied.
However, as one other reviewer hinted, the puzzles are not valid Sudoku puzzles. I'd estimate, conservatively, that 9 out of 10 puzzles on this handheld have multiple solutions. You get down to often 6 or 8 empty squares, and there are several different "correct" ways to complete the puzzle. Of course, the toy only recognizes one way.
If you already have this game, I challenge you to put any puzzle that it gives you in a Sudoku solver online. Multiple, or incomplete, solutions will come up because of the invalid puzzles.
If you don't mind playing with incomplete puzzles, this game is a ton of fun. If you think puzzles should have "right" and "wrong" answers, then you might want to find another handheld that had some extra thought put into the programming. This is sooo easy to use that I have to recommend this handheld game to anyone looking for a Sudoku game. The touch screen works great and isn't any harder to see than the original Game Boy. Pick a number from the bottom of the screen and put it in any number of boxes without all that tedious button pushing to move a cursor around.
If you've made a mistake, just touch the Cancel button and then which number you want to "erase"; or you can overwrite a number.
There's a Pause button if you're concentration is demanded elsewhere, and after a couple of minutes, it automatically shuts off to save power. When you return, the game is still there, just as you left it.
The extra stylus included with the game is a nice addition but I wish there was somewhere to store it so it doesn't get lost. I also wish it had a "Restart" button for those times when you know you've messed up but don't have any idea where. As it is, you can still Cancel every number you've put in and start the game over.
I've very glad my daughter picked this up for me and wouldn't trade it for any other one I've seen.
This works OK, but every puzzle I tried didn't have enough information to actually solve without guessing.
If you aren't a serious Sudoku fan it would be a good choice because it is fun to use, but if you prefer to solve a puzzle through logic don't bother with this device. I loved this game. I hate having to carry around sudoku workbooks so I got this portable edition. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a backlight. Everything else is great! I would recommand.

(A true challenge, but I love it!)
(Help for Black Belt Sudoku)
(A super challenge befitting the title)
(Buy Dell's "Sudoku Challenge" as a companion to this book:) I thought that this book would offer some challenging puzzles after I had read books about the advanced solving methods; swordfish, jellyfish, turbot fish, Gordonian rectangles, etc. But they're actually not any harder than any other "very difficult" puzzles I've done before. But at least they can be solved using logic and solving methods, unlike some you'll find in the local newspaper which can only be solved with guessing. I enjoyed the puzzles but they don't deserve the Black Belt rating. My own big mouth got me in trouble and now I'm absolutely compulsive about solving the puzzles in this book. I had complained to my daughter that a friend and I were tired of not being able to find any hard sudoku puzzles. For Christmas, I received this book. Let the games begin!
I have been solving these puzzles for about 10 years but at that time they were called Number Place and were contained in the Dell monthly puzzle magazines. I routinely solved all the puzzles in ink. They were very good puzzles but not nearly as hard as this Second Degree Black Belt. I even ordered special books of Number Place puzzles directly from Dell. Then I began to hear about this whiz-bang puzzle from Japan. Of course, I had to try it. Imagine my surprise when it was just my old friend the Number Place, only dressed up.
Now on to this particular book. I absolutely love it. The puzzles are, for the most part, quite challenging. I have never heard of any of the techniques mentioned here by other reviewers. I just use dogged determination (and a pencil, now) and work at it until I'm done. I was beginning to wonder why they seemed so much harder than usual puzzles. I'm glad I read the other reviews posted here so that now I understand that these are different from the average sudoku. I suppose if people must use all those unusual solving techniques that would explain why I am having to re-grid some of the time. If you want to move beyond the basic sudoku puzzle level, and past what others call "hard" or "challenging" this book will be a great find for you. I tend to be very stubborn. I don't immediately "see" numbers revealed - as my friend does - but I have a huge amount of patience and even work with a separate eraser which I need - often. One little quirk about this book actually caused me to pass it over while shopping in a bookstore. I picked up the book and while leafing through it could immediately come up with quite a few numbers for spaces. I thought it would be too easy so I put it down. Once I received this as a gift I began to solve the first puzzle and learned the secret. You may get lots of numbers at first but then -- watch out, here comes the brick wall.
I am going to look for more information on the solving techniques mentioned by others here. It may be just the thing I am looking for to keep me from having to erase and start over, or worse yet, re-grid the puzzle. A super good book. Be prepared to be challenged and love it! A previous reviewer suggested the Dell montly publication for solving tips. I found it online at www.dellmagazines.com. It was very helpful, and gave me a clue to the last step for solving I haven't found on my own. If you are bored with the usual sudoku, this is the book for you, but be forewarned, it is tough, and most puzzles can't be solved without penciling in possible answers. I wizzed throught the first Black Belt Sudoku book by another author and was getting bored toward the end. But Second Degree Black Belt by Frank Longo is awesome. These are real tough puzzles requiring an understanding of the X Wing, Unique Rectangles, Swordfish, XY Wing, XYZ Wing and other advanced strategies. Many puzzles use multiple strategies. I really liked #28 with a double X Wing based in 1's. So if you really want to dig into the more difficult strategies and avoid guessing then this is a good book to consider. My biggest disappointment with Second Degree Black Belt Sudoku is the introduction. It provides very basic, simplistic solving techniques which barely scratch the surface of the advanced techniques required to solve these puzzles. No where are terms like "X Wing" "XY Wing" or "swordfish" mentioned, much less illustrated with an example. This is a real shame as you'll need to know these techniques to truly enjoy the puzzles contained in this book.
As a companion to this book I'd recommend also picking up Dell's monthly publication "Sudoku Challenge". The Dell magazine contains the most wonderful 2 page double-sided insert. This insert contains real puzzle examples and explanations of what "X Wing" "XY Wing" and "swordfish" entail.
Prior to reading the Dell publication I felt the aforementioned techniques were too advanced for me. I attempted several times to research and learn these techniques by visiting various websites with alleged examples and definitions of said techniques. What these websites actually contained was logic-jargon and math notation that was over my head. All of these websites used theoretical as opposed to real puzzle examples of each technique which only added to my confusion and frustration. The end result was me leaving the website even more confused than before I came.
Kudos to the Dell publication for being clear and concise and explaining these techniques to me in a language that was simple enough for me to understand. It was this newly learned knowledge that enabled me to overcome my frustrations with having to outright guess at some of the puzzles in Second Degree Black Belt. I'm now able to elegantly solve all the puzzles in this book, the way Sudokus were meant to be solved.
Once you have a firm grasp on X-Wing, XY Wing, and Swordfish the puzzles in Second Degree Black Belt become quite enjoyable. Not all puzzles contained in Second Degree Black Belt require these techniques, but the ones that do I consider to be on the "easy" end of the X(Y) Wing/Swordfish spectrum. These puzzles are right on par with Dell's "super tough" level puzzles, and are nowhere near as hard as Dell's "brainbuster" level puzzles.
In summary to fully enjoy Second Degree Black Belt Sudoku you'll need to understand X Wing, XY Wing, and Swordfish which unfortunately the preface of the book doesn't tell you. Otherwise you'll just be blind guessing at certain stages of each puzzle as a previous reviewer of this book alluded to. With a separate sudoku book for every level, all puzzle lovers can play this wildly popular, incredibly addictive game that's appearing in major newspapers all over! Taking a page from karate - another Japanese art - each title is graded by colour: White Belt for easy, Green Belt for medium level, Brown Belt for hard, and Black Belt for the super-tough solvers. And because each book has an amazing 300 puzzles, the fun can go on for hours. Rerations < Second-Degree Black Belt Sudoku (Martial Arts Sudoku) >

(the series will go on)
(sudoku)
(Sudoku Heaven) This is my favorite sudoku book. I have bought many others&I love the way the easy, medium&hard are mixed throughout the whole book, rather than all easy 1st then mediums&then hards. I finished the 1st issue cover to cover. There are a ton of Sudoku books out there. I bought this one because I was looking for over-sized grids. The write-up stated: "JUMBO SUDOKU 2 has oversized grids so you have extra room to help you solveits a real treat for puzzle lovers!" But this is not true. There are generally two puzzles per page, so they are in fact smaller than Total Sudoku which has only one puzzle per page. Other than that, both the puzzles and the instructions in the front are good. I think there will be another book in this series planned for May.
Even though the original compiler is gone, someone in his family is "being brought up to speed".
these books are great; the large grids allow you to make notes.
Another book in this series, "Prize Sudoku" has a contest. These books are great. They're even large enough for my elderly father with poor eyesight! This is a great Sudoku book. Unfortunately the compiler died just before Christmas so there won't be any more.... better get one quick! On the heels of the popular Total Sudoku and Jumbo Sudoku, the third installment Jumbo Sudoku 2 includes 400, brand new puzzles. This numerical brainteaser is positively addicting! This collection, which ranges in difficulty from gentle through the tough to the diabolical, is the most extensive on the market. JUMBO SUDOKU 2 has oversized grids so you have extra room to help you solve.Sudoku puzzles continue to be picked up in top newspapers across the country and are featured in USA Today, NY Post, Washington Post and the LA Times
with many more sure to follow. With so many different puzzles to choose from, Sudoku is sure to appeal to puzzle-fans of all levels Rerations < Jumbo Sudoku 2 >

(SUDUKO WAS NEVER SO DANGEROUS)
(The numbers have it)
(Fun series)
(fun Puzzle Lady mystery) I love Parnell Hall's wordplay in both his "Puzzle Lady" and "Stanley Hastings" mysteries, and THE SUDOKU PUZZLE MURDERS had me laughing out loud. While certainly the plot is convoluted, it ties up nicely at the end -- I wasn't left with any unanswered questions, or things that didn't make sense. And unlike many mysteries I read, the murderer was not obvious despite the fact that there were few suspects.
I do disagree with a previous review that said the two Japanese businessmen were difficult to tell apart. I thought the author made it very clear that no one had trouble telling them apart. The confusion Sherry had in signing the wrong man was simply because at the time no one realized there were two different men trying to sign the Puzzle Lady to a book deal.
I highly recommend this light, breezy, fun read.
Every year I look forward to another Puzzle Lady Mystery. The last one I was not that fond of. This one is very good. The mystery was interesting. The Suduko and Crossword puzzles were clever how they tied into the story. The only complaint I have is that the author wrote about two Japanese men that were suspects, and they were very difficult to distinguish. The two men were supposed to be similar and that is why Cora's niece gets confused when she meets with one not the other, but I believe there were times that the readers will get confused too.
Even with the slight confusion, I still recommend this book. It is a light read, that will make you smile. It is a good summer read. Enjoy! Finally Cora solves a "paper" puzzle by the numbers and with a little "Oriental" wisdom keeps us wanting more. Parnell Hall's done it again. While similar to Nero Blanc's Crossword Mysteries (which I haven't read), I took an instant liking to Parnell Hall's Puzzle Lady Mysteries. They are just fun, clever and breezy. I like the characters and the clever dialogue. The plot is convoluted but I try not to dwell on it and just enjoy the book. I can't wait for the next installment.
It was glaring the change of format though with the switch of publishers (to St. Martin's Minotaur). I wish the books would just be released in paperback format from the get go because I think it would be more popular.
I would recommend the Archie McNally series by Lawrence Sanders if you enjoy fun mysteries. In Bakerhaven, Connecticut, Cora Felton, the nationally recognized Puzzle lady, is standing in the parking lot when Japanese publisher Hideki Takiyama comes up to her and introduces himself. He says she is famous in Japan and he wants to write a Puzzle Lady Sudoko puzzle book. She refers him to her niece Sherry Carter who negotiates all her contracts. Later Sherry goes to sign a contact only to learn she signed with Hideki's rival Aoki Yoshiaki who is married to the lovely Reiko.
Cora is at the sheriff's office when a call comes in that there has been a murder. At the crime scene, Cora sees a man with his face sliced in half and it becomes obvious he was dumped here. They find out he was a private investigator from New York. A few days later, Cora sees Sherry's ex following Aoki and Reiko who are followed by another investigator form New York. The second New York private investigator is found dead very near where his predecessor was dumped with a samurai sward in him. The sheriff asks Cora to help him figure out what is going on; since she loves a puzzle, she agrees to assist him.
The fun of the Puzzle Lady mysteries starts and finish with the aptly nicknamed heroine who never takes herself seriously. She is a smart-mouthed sassy broad who does her own thing regardless of what others think. Her antics and asides bring humor into a serious complex whodunit that leaves readers spinning in admiration.
Harriet Klausner
Cora Felton, the Puzzle Lady (who actually couldn’t solve a crossword puzzle to save her life), is surprisingly good at sudoku, so it’s no problem when a Japanese publisher asks her to write a sudoku book. But when two Japanese publishers show up in Bakerhaven to vie for her services, Cora is a little confused. Which one did she actually sign with? Which one has the stunning geisha wife? And which one is about to be arrested for murder? The two men are archenemies and will go to great lengths to ace out each other. But would they stoop to murder? Someone is littering the town with sudoku, crossword puzzles, and dead private eyes. It’s up to Cora, with the help of her niece, Sherry, to solve the puzzle, the sudoku, and the murder, before the killer strikes again. Parnell Hall delivers another entertaining, puzzle-packed adventure with his delightfully untraditional sleuth, featuring for the first time sudoku puzzles byNew York Timescrossword editor Will Shortz. customer 's review (Biggest Sudoku Screen!) I got hooked on Sudoku a year ago and had a difficult time finding a large screen. This game is one of the best I've found. It's one of the easiest to read, and easiest to operate. The worst drawback is the screw that holds the battery lid on. I disposed of the screw so that changing the batteries were easier. Our Super Electronic Handheld Sudoku puzzles are all top of the line. Each model includes over 1,000,000 puzzles built in. We use a super high resolution large LCD display for easy viewing with Indiglo backlight built into four different models (sk-838, sk-888, sk-898, sk-8011) for playing in the dark. 3-5 Levels of play (depending on the model) - the number of givens goes down with each higher level. Each Sudoku game comes in sealed packages with instruction booklet. Please see below for exact model specifications, colors and dimensions. sk-680 Features: Size: 6" x 4.5" x 1" Screen: 2" x 3" Auto grid memory function Functions: drafting function, reading function, redoing examination function, and double-mode operation 3 modes: time, date, alarm clock 2 million random puzzles Power supply: 2 x AAA (not included) Color: silver Sudoku is a logic-based placement puzzle, also known as Number Place in the United States. The aim of the puzzle is to enter a numeral from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9 x 9 grid made up of 3 x 3 sub-grids (called regions), starting with various numerals given in some cells (the givens). Each row, column and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Solving the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Its grid layout is reminiscent of other newspaper puzzles like crosswords and chess problems. Although first published in 1979, Sudoku became popular in Japan in 1986 and took the United Kingdom by storm.

(Sudoku Game -- Can't See It)
(not as expected) My mother loves the game but the lighting is terrible. Very hard to see the screen. Needs better lighting. Ordered this as a gift, was back ordered, canceled order, order was sent and billed anyway. Game screen is very hard to read, must be held at just the right angle. Otherwise easy to play. The product is not very good. The game is okay, but the lighting on this product is terrible. This is a very difficult company to deal with. No phone number or information on returning a product is included. I returned this product and it took me about an hour to finally find the phone number of the company on the internet. I had to call to get instructions for returns. Then when I returned the product, the company only refunded about half of the purchase price. This company is a very big RIP OFF. I would not do business with the company at all. If you do, do so at your own risk. RIP OFF RIP OFF..... I bought and attempted to use this item to no avail. The screen lacks contrast and can only be easily read if the game is slanted a certain way. The available backlight helps a little, but not for me. This has been consigned to the pile of junk I have bought and never have and never will use. A waste! Game was easy to use, but it had to be tilted at just the right angle to be read. Face was easily scratched. Our Super Electronic Handheld Sudoku puzzles are all top of the line. Each model includes over 1,000,000 puzzles built in.
