customer 's review (Not the way Sudoku should be) I was very disappointed when I received this. The quality is excellent, BUT it is for 3 or more players. Most other Sudoku games I have seen are for 1 or more players. I doubt this game will get much use because it will be very rare that three or more "Sudoku players" will be around with time to spare for a game. This game is not good unless you have a family--or a group of friends--in which all members play and enjoy Sudoku.
This is not the choice to make if you have found you enjoy Sudoku as a hobby and you want to play with it more, UNLESS you are part of a group that loves Sudoku! I wish I had known that three players are needed beforehand; I would have made a different and better choice. It's your favorite number puzzle in an exciting board game format for multiple players! If you like playing Sudoku against yourself, you will love playing against family and friends. The world's gone Sudoku crazy. Put your family and friends to the Sudoku test with the board game based on the number solving puzzle. There's no math involved, you solve the puzzles with reason and logic. It's fun, challenging, and very addictive. With the special Box Reveal Dice and three different levels of puzzles (easy, medium, and hard), anyone can play Sudoku and win the game! (There's no substitute for experience!!)
(Lots of practice puzzles not much instruction)
(Some serious flaws for a Sudoku Book (for Dummies))
(Easy puzzles way too difficult) This initial Su Doku for DUMMIES book ranks as the first and the best book for Sudoku lovers. Hands down, no comparison. My husband and I cut our teeth on its instructions. We collected other books in the process, but we ALWAYS returned to this one. Even the other SUDOKU FOR DUMMIES books don't compare to this volume (I can't explain why this would be true... I just state it).
We have completed this particular volume twice; today I did the last DIABOLICAL Sudoku.
Now, I am about to purchase THE VERY SAME BOOK, AGAIN (that's why I came to this page in AMAZON... to place the order).
This is our first and favorite. It's family. Go figure.
If you want a book that will please you at all levels, START ... AND END ... HERE. The explanations in the book are typical for "Dummies" books, where illustrations of methods accompany written instructions. Both are fairly easily understood even when logic, to me anyway, is a distant "second language." There are 80 "easy" puzzles that help develop skill with solving techniques; they get harder as you go along. Following these are 100 "tricky" puzzles that hone your skills to the point, theoretically, you can solve any Su Doku puzzle. To prove it, the book throws in 40 "tough" puzzles and 20 "diabolical" puzzles. I'm still working through the tricky puzzles and can't even imagine trying to solve the other two categories. Su Doku is entertaining and good exercise for the mind, especially as we grow older. "Dummies" is a good teacher and guide. I thought this book would provide more tactics on solving but it really has lots of practice puzzles at 3 levels -- from easy to difficult. Allow me to explain how messed up are the levels of difficulty of the puzzles in this book.
There are computer programs that let you enter any Sudoku puzzle and then can tell you how hard the puzzle is by classifying it into certain levels of difficulty. A friend of mine who is very good at Sudoku got one such software, and that one uses the following difficulty levels: 1) Very Easy, 2) Easy, 3) Medium, and 4) Hard. There is a separate special level of difficulty called "Very Hard - Unfair", but that's reserved for Sudoku puzzles that require guessing / trial and error.
Sudoku puzzle number 3 in this book, supposedly an "entry level" puzzle according to the book, is ranked as "Medium" by the software mentioned above. Who considers a level of difficulty 3 out of 4 an "entry level"? And I do think these kinds of software have extremely powerful solving engines, making them capable of accurate assessments on the levels of difficulty of any puzzle.
This messed up level of difficulty in such an early exercise can be extremely discouraging for newbies, and on the other hand, in my opinion it is a sympton of little care and very poor editing when putting this book together.
Page 35 of the book (Spanish version) talks about one of the alleged "Beyond the obvious" strategies, a so called "Rule of the three numbers in three cells", or in more standardized terminology found online, the "Hidden Triples" strategy. In my opinion the strategy is very poorly exemplified and explained in the book. Any webpage describing it is much more enlightening and clear. And there are numerous other strategies very carefully explained in several online sources, which are not even mentioned in this book (not even in the Sudoku for Dummies vol 2).
The book has no alphabetical index at the end by the way, so you can't search for strategy names directly, or for key words, and there is a good reason for that: the book has really very little textual information. An alphabetical index would be ridiculous with so few entries. There is only a few pages of text at the beginning, 37 out of 342 pages, Spanish version again. Those text pages basically describe the only rule of Sudoku with some diagrams, and them attempt to explain very few basic solving strategies plus the poorly explained hidden triples. From the 37 first pages remove the first 12 which are mostly contents, intro, etc. So basically, 25 pages of text, in a small format book (7x5 inches). The bulk of the book is just exercises, and their solutions.
This book in general does not match the typical comprehensiveness I've seen in many For Dummies books.
What other reviewer indicates is also true, the paper this book was made of is pretty bad, doesn't stand erasing too well.
Conclusion: NOT recommended. Try other Sudoku books with less faults. And in any case, check the numerous Sudoku resources and compilations of strategies available for free online. This book in my opinion is not worth it. I really regret having purchased it. I read the full introduction, being new to sudoku. Thought I would have the tools from reading to certainly do the easy puzzles in this book, but found them way too brain-twisting. The puzzles were not a good followup teaching tool as way too difficult. I couldn't believe those puzzles were marked EASY even after reading a lot of these materials.
So I would have to rate this as not a good sudoku book for anyone but more advanced. Just my humble opinion. Sudoku for Dummies Rerations < Su Doku for Dummies (Sudoku) >

(Fun if you're not blind)
(Great fun!)
(Perfect for the sudoku lover in your family!)
(Great fun, almost perfect entertainment.) Excellent Book for beginner/intermediate puzzle solver. Challenging! Easy to start with and draws you into it's web. The way they have it set up, it's really hard to differentiate between the middle and the end sections. Also, the print is very small so if you have trouble seeing this is no the sudoku book for you. Also, I was expecting a challenge but finished the hardest puzzles in the book very quickly. Good for beginners, but not someone who's already gone through another Samurai Sudoku book. Peter Greene's samurai sudoku puzzles are great! Every puzzle is symmetrical and pleasing to the senses. The page size is comfortable for working the large puzzles and the paper is a good for the inevitable erasures. Very few of the puzzles leave you with several sets of pairs, which result in having to guess and check. (I dislike puzzles that leave you guessing; I want to use logic and not do tons of erasing.) I couldn't wait for volume 2 to come out! I bought this as a gift for a family member. They love Sudoku but wanted something a bit more challenging. If this sounds like you then you will love this book. Samurai sodoku books were not carried in the local bookstores. It was a great find and a very well received gift. A "samurai" sudoku puzzle consists of a central sudoku with its corners joining it to four additional sudokus, as shown in the cover illustration, a construction which can provide additional fun for the mid-level sudoku addict. The objective is to solve all five overlapping puzzles. In the more difficult puzzles, none of the corner puzzles can be solved in their entirety until additional information is provided as a result of solving part of the central sudoku, and that, in turn, depends on information from all four corner puzzles.
In the early puzzles, the corner sudokus can be done in their entirety, before solving the central puzzle, and occasionally a central puzzle can be completed before the corners are completely filled, making these puzzles fairly easy. The options for a given box within a square are usually limited to pairs of numbers, reducing the challenges. By puzzle #7, however, the author introduces three options per box and the puzzles begin to be more time-consuming and difficult.
As is sometimes the case with regular sudoku puzzles, however, it is occasionally possible to have more than one correct solution to a single sudoku puzzle. When this happens in a corner sudoku, it can prevent the whole samurai puzzle from being solved. Sometimes it is simply the reversal of a couple of numbers which causes the problem. Though the individual sudoku puzzle can be solved without any "errors," this alternative, "correct" solution is wrong in the overall scheme of the whole samurai puzzle. Puzzle addicts may be hard pressed to figure out how to avoid this problem, even when warned that all puzzles should be done in tandem and not separately.
I found nine occasions in which individual sudoku puzzles within the samurai puzzle had more than one solution--puzzles 12, 38, 46, 55, 65, 78, 79, 88, and 89. This was particularly frustrating in the more difficult and more time-consuming puzzles. The remaining 91 puzzles were clever and fun to do, however, and I've already bought, and look forward to doing, the next book in this series. Mary Whipple
Sudoku is the number-placing puzzle that is spreading across the world, engaging the minds of people of all ages. The rules are simple, you don't need to know any mathematics, all you need is logic.Samurai Sudoku puzzles are like traditional Sudoku puzzles but with five interlocking Sudoku grids. This book contains 100 of these massive puzzles, including solutions. All the Samurai Sudoku puzzles in this book are symmetric. The rule is the same: Each row, column and 3x3 box in each puzzle grid must contain the numbers 1-9 only once. The puzzles start with a few easy ones for warming up, but the majority of the puzzles are hard and can take hours to solve. This book is for those who feel ordinary Sudoku puzzles are too easy or too quick to solve and want more challenging puzzles. If you solve two of these every week this book will last you a year! (Good puzzles but hard to read)
(Spiral Binding a Plus)
(Another must have) While I like the idea of the small size which is especially good for traveling, I find the expert section very difficult to use as the colour of the numbers are a sort of yellow and it does not stand out. I should be black as the other sections or even green or blue. I found difficulty distinguishing the 6 from 8 and reading other figures as well.
just a heads up, this is a small book and the puzzles are smaller than i like. the answers in the back are almost impossible to read. if you are young, no problem...if you are over 40 and wear glasses this may be a stuggle. i did like the fact it is very portable. I bought this book for my mother. She has MS and has reduced dexterity in her hands. The book is easy for her to hold onto with the spiral binding since she does not have to hold the book open while working on the puzzle. This book is one of the best formats. You can easily take it with you anywhere. The puzzles are rated correctly. The only drawback is there is limited space to write "possibles" for the harder grids. The Sudoku craze continues, and this unique fold-over notepad is filled with 200 new puzzles for even more hours of highly puzzling fun! Rerations < Sudoku 2: Medium to Hard >

customer 's review (Do you Sudoku? Call on Carol!)
(Sudoku On The Mind)
(A very plain sudoku game) Carol Vorderman, an amiable UK television personality, introduces us to the game of Sudoku with step-by-step video tutorials that are easy to understand, and she even shows a sample puzzle from start to finish. As the player increases their skill, additional tutorials from Carol can provide advanced gameplay tips.
There are tools to assist as the player gets their feet wet: The "Assists" mode can set up pencil marks, inform the player if any Sudoku rules have been broken, and it will even point out errors as the player progresses.
While doing the puzzles, the player has the option to listen to some music. It's the same loop of "Sudoku Elevator Muzak" repeated ad infinitum and there's no other choice...it's either Muzak or silence.
For some odd reason, the career mode of gameplay is in a martial arts ranking system. As the player progresses, a black belt can be earned, and Carol's expertise can be challenged in advanced gameplay modes.
There are co-operative modes, but since the game of Sudoku is usually a solo activity, the average gamer will probably never use these.
The description of the PSP button control is curiously incomplete both in the game instructions and the boxed instructions, but with a little trial and errror, one can figure out how to use the interface. The instruction manual gives a "print&play" option on the main menu, but this is not in the game anywhere. The "Sudoku Solver" option suggests that Carol can help to solve any Sudoku puzzle, but when this is selected, it opens up a blank Sudoku grid where numbers can be randomly entered and an optional puzzle solution can be chosen. This looks like a feature that never got completed.
So what's the final verdict?
It's pretty clear that Carol Vorderman cashed in on having her face and name appear on the cover of the box, the instruction manual, and the game menus. Her visage and voice are an enjoyable introduction to the world of Sudoku - most other PSP Sudoku games are very bland and offer little to no assistance in learning basic or advanced tactics.
Some other reviewers have commented that this is not a choice for die hard Sudoku players, and I tend to agree. The incomplete&misleading instructions also diminish the final product.
However, if you have a PSP and you're looking to understand what's all the rave about Sudoku, this is a great way to get hooked. For the past few years, puzzle games have became all the range. Thanks to the thrill of video games like Brain Age for the Nintendo DS, many gamers have decided to step away from the action and sports titles, to something more into the mind. That has happened with Sudoku. The simple game has definitely brought so many gamers into a challenging filed of 9x9 puzzling action. Yet, even though the Nintendo DS has had some great titles, but the Sony PSP has yet to have a definitive title that can be just as great in the puzzle match. Maybe, U.K. Sudoku master Carol Voderman could help in this new game.
Carol Voderman's Sudoku for the Sony PSP, is a game that tries to test your mind and hands at the most challenging number game, Sudoku. In this game, nothing is changed that seperates itself from other sudoku titles. The game seperates itself more visually, as Carol gives you a detailed instruction on how to play the game, and the opportunity to go head to head with her. There are numerous puzzles here that challenge you as you try to play each number from 1 to 9 in a 3x3 box and in horizontal and vertical lines that are across and vertical. The graphics work very nicely, and handle well with the PSP. Unfortunately, the gameplay is good for new Su Doku gamers, but for die hard puzzlers, they might feel this game is not as challenging as other ones like Go Su Doku were. The control is basic, adn easy to operate through each of the puzzles, but leaves a dent for some puzzle fans.
All in all, Carol Voderman's Sudoku isn't a bad title, but could've left a lot more to have been desired for multiplayer action. Still, if you haven't played Sudoku yet and own a PSP, than this is the game for you. Otherwise, you might want to try something else that is less puzzling.

Fun&Enjoyment: C
Overall: C 1/2+ In case you didn't know, the attractively clad woman on the cover is Carol Vorderman, a 50-year-old quiz gameshow host in the U.K. She's written a book or two on the game of sudoku, so now she "hosts" this game.
This is really a very simple and plain electronic sudoku game. The controls are pretty easy to figure out (I rented my copy). There are a few categories of gameplay; for single player mode they are: classic for quick solo playing; arcade for timed playing; career for earning the title "master of sudoku" (it's just progressive play); and "challenge Carol" for timed difficult puzzles. There is a multi-player mode; I didn't try that because nobody else has this game.
You also get a few half-baked video instructions, tips and tutorials; they really suck.
As a sudoku fan I found most of the games a little too easy. But what really sucks about this game is it's really plain and no fun at all for anyone who's not into sudoku. I mean, they could have made it a bit more interesting. Twenty bucks for a boring game like this is really a waste of money.
So, unless you are crazy about sudoku, you'll do better staying away from this game. If you like sudoku, this should have enough puzzles to keep you busy for a while -- although you'd probably have more fun with sudoku games for the Nintendo DS.
