It is one of the best tribute albums honoring the genius of George Gershwin. I have watched Joshua Bell perform live at the Opening Night for Concert Season at Hollywood a few years back where he shared the spotlight with John Groban. I was in awe and it was great seeing them perform before a live audience. Listening to his recorded performances is such a delight, but seeing him perform live made me appreciate his flawless violin artistry even more.
The eleven tracks were beautifully arranged for violin and orchestra and well-executed by Joshua Bell with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of a fine conductor, John Williams, and with the able support of film composer/arranger Alexander Courage. His performances from the first track to the last are as lovely, silky and soft as the petals of a pink English rose. Should George Gershwin be listening from Heaven above, it would surely bring a big smile on his face.
While all the performances are captivatingly charming, my top favorites include four of Gershwin's gems of gems, "Embraceable You," "Love Is Here To Stay," "But Not For Me" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." These pieces are well-executed in smooth, fluid, effortless and flawless manner. Each piece is given an exquisitely classical twist that makes it more endearing to the ears of fine music lovers. Listening to these pieces is such a very soothing, relaxing and entrancing musical adventure.
After performing for more than fifteen years and subsequent Grammy awards to add to his name, Joshua Bell has well-established his reputation in the art of music as a performer and recording artist. He is definitely recognized as one of the best and youngest violinists who add beauty and grace to the wonderful world of music. His artistry is marked by endless elegance and timeless appeal.
Listening to this album radiates joy in my heart and exudes serenity in my soul. This album is able to achieve such sentiments to my musical sensibilities. I do hope it does the same to all its listeners.

(musicianship that mars music) 『I was eager to obtain a copy of Joshua Bell's CD viz The Gershwin Fantasy - as I adore Gershwin and have an enormous respect for Joshua Bell. The interpretations were dazzling to say the least; sometimes too much so. Great musicianship towers over the melodies and harmonies that make classical music 'popular'. One begins admiring the majestic thrust of Bell's variations but winds up deploring the actual sonority of great music subordinated to excessive blasts of interpretation. There is an old Rogers&Hart song entitled: "Don't Bury The Tune" and it kept recurring to me as I listened to Bell - not precisely 'burying the tune' but gussying it up with so many effusions of musical expertise that one became more aware of the 'variations' than the 'theme' which gave birth to them. Bell's firs CD of violin classics is something of a masterpiece, and what makes it so is fidelity to the notes as the composers wrote them. Ultimately, 'fantasy' is the right noun for this second CD. However these are not 'fantasies', they are precious, workmanlike examples of outstanding American music and deserve to be treated as the gems they are. Polished yes, but not rethreaded into garish costume jewelry.

My sister is a bigger fan of Beyonce than me and when she told me the cd was crap I just didn't believe her. And how come her fans have to win the lottery or save three paychecks just to see her in concert? I'll be a Beyonce fan forever, but "B" come on now, for real?』
('Better than the album that spawned it!) 『I bought "I am...Sasha Fierce" for my twenty-something niece and listened to it a couple of times and was not impressed. The songs, though some were well-written, just missed something, especially those that were dependent on the imagery from the videos that accompanied them.
However, "Above and Beyonce'" corrects that, offering "re-workings" that are major improvements on the originals, with the exception of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it"). That is the sole original that is better the way it was first presented. Turning it into a "dance mix" is unnecessary, and downright "sacrilegious."
Also, "Ego," featuring a horrendous rap from Kanye West, is filled with too many inuendos, unsuitable for the younger segment of Beyonce's audience.
The DVD collection is a welcome bonus, especially for an artist who, herself, is a visual treat.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (What Happens When A Fascist Dictatorship Takes Power!) 『It's a great shame that this historically significant film is so obscure - it currently has only one review, which unfortunately misses the point of the story! This is a devastating and historically accurate tale about what happens when fascism violently comes to power by overthrowing a democratically elected government. And the film gets personal! Anyone who has ever been a political activist will have shivers going up their spine while watching this poignant masterpiece! What's more disturbing is that events happen so fast, it's very hard to process the experience! Disbelief and denial of the magnitude of what is happening interferes with one's ability to make the appropriate decisions. Keep in mind making the wrong decision may cost you your life, or that of a family member. What makes it even more alarming is the realization that given the right set of circumstances, no democracy, including the United States, is immune to a violent overthrow!
While I did not experience the violent overthrow of Salvador Allende's government, I knew someone who was an eye-witness to General Pinochet's crimes while living in Santiago, Chile's capital. This person, who happened to be a Nun, was lucky. She was an American citizen, and a member of a religious order, and was allowed to evacuate to the United States. But before leaving, she witnessed the death and destruction first hand! To her, and hundreds of thousands people like her, this was not an abstract experience of watching a movie in the safety of one's home!
For those who would like to do further research on the subject I highly recommend these two groundbreaking books by Philip Agee: Inside the Company and On the Run』
(Stays Away From Its Main Subject.) 『Michael Cacoyannis closely choreographs the movements of actors in his films and this, in conjunction with his script for this flabbily constructed work, sadly gives the piece a lightweight feel, inappropriately distanced from the genuine citizenry for whom he purportedly feels sympathy, the entire film therefore going down to artistic defeat, not aided by unsuitable casting. Based upon a novel by American Caroline Richards, the setting is Chile in 1973 directly following the assassination of Marxist president Salvador Allende, when General Augusto Pinochet's military cartel, with United States backing, took over from the elected government, the action following events in the lives of a married upper case American expatriate couple, the Willings, and their close friends the Arayas, a Chilean family from the class of moneyed interests. Although highly dramatic socio-political circumstances form a strong background for the storyline, numerous psychosexual relationships among the characters occupy most of the director's attention, and although humiliating treatment of some women at the hands of Pinochet troops provides melodramatic interest, a viewer might wonder at the lack of any attempt to develop insights into the background of a situation that tore the nation apart, impacting the working class native population largely ignored by Cacoyannis. Shot in Greece, the film benefits from able camerawork, but some wayward casting, notably that of Randy Quaid as a goatish army corporal whose risible attempt at speaking Hispanic flavoured English provides one of many elements of the affair that one will prefer not to remember; Franco Nero is the most effective player at handling the stilted dialogue. A harshly cut 120 minute version has been distributed and is best avoided, since it only serves to increase the incoherence rife within this unsatisfying venture.』

As very low budget horror films go, it's pretty decent, but it hasn't aged particularly well as a film. Margot Kidder's performance is the best part of the film. I find the homage to Hitchcok wearing at times, and if you compare this to Hitch's contemporary film, Frenzy, De Palma is clearly very much the apprentice. Even so, there's more than enough creepiness to go around here and it's fun to watch, which is a lot more than you can say for many other films.』
(Great suspense!!!) 『Awesome thriller. Will remind Hitchcock. Losely based on some true facts. Has some intense scenes mid-way when it its all clear to the viewers. Terrific start. End may not be the best. A Must watch, buy if you can view thriller again and again.

(Does your sister have issues like this?) 『This is a great film! Although the acting is a bit rough for a few characters I found myself drawn into the story line. We have Danielle Breton (Margot Kidder) has a one-night stand with a black TV-game show player. The morning after, he is killed by Danielle's psycho twin sister, Dominique Blanchion. But Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt), an aspiring journalist, sees everything from her flat across the street. Things get even uglier when the journalist starts following Danielle and his strange ex-husband, Dr. Emil Breton (De Palma perennial weirdo Bill Finley). What dark secret lies behind this murder? Uh? Of course, nobody really seems to care about the plot - De Palma plays the genre rules, twisting every second with his split screen techniques and neat suspense touches. There is a "dream" sequence, some blood, a hideous scar, drugs and a birthday cake.
Sure, the movie owes more than a passing nod to Psycho (Collector's Edition) and Rear Window (Collector's Edition)specifically, but De Palma's exhilarating use of that split-screen technique as well as Margot Kidder's creepy performance add up to a genuinely frightening experience. The "peeping tom" opening is brilliant. The humor doesn't lessen the shock, but rather enhances it by keeping the audience continually caught off guard. He takes the most vulnerable and receptive of human reactions--laughter, fear, and anticipation--and pushes them to their extremes until the audience is caught up in giddy bewilderment. You don't know what the director is going to pull next, so you can't prepare yourself.
De Palma is nothing if not a visceral filmmaker, and in his comfort with the comic and the horrific, he resembles Roman Polanski more than he does Hitchcock. Taking into consideration their mutually varied filmographies and how they've been received, it seems a more apt comparison. The one major difference is that Polanski has a deep sense of the tragic, and almost always ends on that note. Not so much De Palma. In the final scene in Sisters, we find Charles Durning's private dick, who had all but disappeared from the movie, high up on a telephone pole dressed as an electrician, dutifully watching a couch through a pair of binoculars. The movie is over in every way--the blood has been shed, the mystery has been solved, and the suspense is gone--except that it apparently isn't. De Palma wants to leave us with something else. So we have Durning waiting to see who comes to get the couch. This could well be that Shock Recovery Period that the movie posters promoted. This was another great film that was highly recommended by Chris and the one only #1 Depalma fan R.A. Bean which I greatly enjoyed. 』
(DePalma's Psychotic Siamese Sisters...) 『In 1973, after spending the last few years making great independant films like "Murder a La Mod", "The Wedding Party", "Greetings", and "Hi, Mom!", Brian Depalma was put on the map as the new Master Of Suspense with his first 'mainstream' film, "Sisters", a very demented, deranged, twisted, psychological horror film that rivals even the best of todays top thrillers. He uses themes that would continue throughout his career in this film: The doppleganger, split personalities, multiple personality disorder(s), mistaken identity, voyuerism, and horrorfying psychological madness and muder and mayhem. And sinister satire! The film starts as a game show "Peeping Toms" is being played out before a live audience. The contestant on the show, a young black man named Philip Woode (Lisle Wilson), and the guest 'prankster', a model named Danillele Breton (Margot Kidder in her BEST performance ever). After the show is over, Philip recieves a gift card which is a ticket for two to have a free dinner at an African themed restaraunt, and for Danielle's participation on the show, she recieves a very nice set of steak knives (establishing sterotypes and irony in one set piece). They attend dinner together, where they are followed by Danielle's ex-husband, Emil Breton (William Finley), but he is removed from the restaraunt; so they have a very nice dinner together, then go to Danielle's to spend the night together. As they are making out, we are shown a very large, ugly scar on Danielle's thigh.?.?. The next morning, there is loud yelling from the next room, someone calling out "Danielle! Danielle!" in a very impatient voice that awakens Danielle, who goes to respond, having a conversation, one person speaking French, and Danielle in French-English (the accent she has throughout the entire film); then coming back and telling Philip that it was her sister, well, her twin sister, Dominique, and she is upset because today is their birthday, and she wanted to spend the day together, and is upset that Danielle has a man in the apartment. Philip gets dressed, and goes to the local pharmacy for Danielle to pick up a prescription for her, and in the meantime he drops by a local bakery and buys a birthday cake for the twin sisters, Dominique and Danielle. When he returns to the apatment, he is murdered in a very shocking scene that I will not detail for I don't wanna spoil it for people who haven't seen the film. From a window in a buiding next to Danielle's apartment building, a young female reporter, Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt) witnesses the entire muder in an awesome split screen scene that DePalma first employed in this film; and, in which he uses effectively in a few more scenes. She calls the cops, there is an investigation, but no body is found, but this is when Grace starts noticing signs and/or clues that Danielle may have a sister, a TWIN sister, and all is not what it appears to be; so, she hires a private detective, Joseph Larch (Charles Durning). He finds a folder that has files on the Blanchion twins, an infamous story about two Siamese twins who got seperated about a year before, so Grace investigates the story further by seeking out the top reporter that was there during the operation, Mr. McClennon (Bernard Hughes), who tells Grace that Dominique died on the operating table.?.?.?. And, this leads Grace, who in her (God bless her heart) naivete, and stubborness, and her drive to someday be a 'respected' journalist, on a search that ends in a psychological/sinister/demented/deranged/almost psychodelic/hypnotic/kaleidoscopic/bloody climax that will leave you utterly stunned, breathless, and scared witless! And, the final twist at the end, where a particular character is watching a particular item through binoculars until the cows (literally) come home is awesome and utterly hilarious, but also very bone chilling all the same. Of special mention: DePalma cast Jennifer Salt's real-life mother, Mary Davenport as Grace's mother. One of the cops was played by Dolph Sweet, who is remembered for his role on the tv sitcom "Gimme A Break". And, the awesome score was done by the great Bernard Herrmann, who DePalma got to come out of retirement to do, and who went on to score DePalma's "Obsession". And, DePalma originally wanted to get bigger name stars for the roles of Grace and Philip: He wanted to get Marlo Thomas to play Grace, and Sydney Poitner to play Philip, but due to budget constraints, and/or other reasons, that never came to fuition, which in my opinion is a good thing, because what may have appeared as a good idea on paper, I don't think would have worked as well on screen. Jennifer Salt (who had been in DePalma's "The Wedding Party" and "Hi, Mom!") was born for this role, and Lisle Wilson gave a very topnotch performance as the 'male Janet Leigh'. This is a very great mixture of genres, mainly horror and satire, and something that will stick in the recesses of your mind and stay there for days and days to come, and haunt you on a very deep scale. As one reviewer on here put it, this isn't DePalma's first film, but in many ways, it is the first 'Brian DePalma film'. Easily in the same league as "Psycho", "Halloween", "Suspiria", "Rosemary's Baby", "Repulsion", and referencing such greats as "Rope", "Rear Window", "Psycho", and "The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari", this is a very timeless classic masterpiece that will rival anything in its genre that you've ever seen! And, why Margot Kidder didn't have every award there is thrown at her for her performance is a crime, for she is show stopping in this. Currently, there is a remake of this trying to get thatrical disribution...AVOID it!!! This is the ONLY version of "Sisters" you'll ever want and/or need to see! Thank you&happy Halloween! ;-)』
(Siamese Twins with a French-Canadian Twist) 『Watching the 'Special Features' section on Siamese Twins on the DVD, they make it look like the director wanted to pay homage to Siamese Twins in general. However, this film is far from it. If you always thought of Siamese Twins as sort of freaky/weird, then heres your chance to think of them as functionally delusional and hysterically dysfunctional as well. In this case, this works for the movie, but in real life does a disservice to the noble, yet troubled life plaguing many real life Siamese Twins.
Margot Kidder (with the most over the top Quebecois accent this side of Montreal) is wonderful in a role that doesn't shy away from showing her in an unflattering physical light. It is clear that this is a woman whose charms are enhanced by make-up alone, and she plays this card to the hilt. As one half of a Siamese Twin couple that were surgically separated, Margot plays Danielle, a mentally disturbed young woman who takes on her sisters' persona once her sister died on the surgical table during their separation process. Due to this, Danielle becomes a pathological killer with a penchant for blood, but of course when she 'comes to' she can't remember any of it. How convenient.
The director deals with all sorts of interesting issues here. Push through the intelligent script and you'll find a subtle irony in how the movie deals with racism (still very perceptible in 1973 when the movie was shot), to the bleakness of modern urban and suburban life, where 'Peeping Toms' are virtually you and I (better executed in the recent 'Disturbia').
The final shot of the film alienated many core fans of the movie to that point, as it seemed to many viewers as nonsensical and idiotic. Its sort of funny, actually, and reduces the movie from being a serious crime-noir to becoming a more pedestrian comedy. This minor flaw apart, the rest of the film plays out wonderfully. The now-famous 'split screen' effect first found its roots' here (yes, it was done in other films too, but this was the first time so much of it was used, and to great effect, even with overlapping dialogue).
The posters and adverts for this portray 'Sisters' as a companion of sorts to another thriller - 'Pscyho'. While I wouldn't go that far, this movie does have its scary moments and charms. To its' credit, I can say that I was never once bored or irritated by its' slow and languid pace. And even though Margot Kidder is not a great actress, the director knows exactly how to use her. Especially disturbing is her epileptic seizure once she commits murder in her bedroom. You will definitely be quite moved by this scene, one way or the other.
"Sisters" is a cinematic achievement that may or may not work for you. If you like most of DePalma's later work, don't even compare this to those films as its so very different. Its also quite dated compared to other films of the same genre from the same era. However, you cannot deny the slick direction, cool dialogue, and smart performances from all the leads (especially the nosy reporter neighbor).
Criterion's DVD is a fine transfer as always, though not as great as some of their other more recent transfers. I had a huge problem with the extras here, though, as most of them seemed an afterthought. For example, the feature on Siamese Twins is not a documentary or anything - just scans of an article from a magazine. I could get this off the Internet if I wanted to. Can't really call this a special feature. The poster section is mildly interesting, but since they're mostly the same poster in different lettering, theres really not much watchability in this regard.
For both the film and DVD, I give a generous three stars. This movie may not be a classic, but its a fine addition to the crime-mystery genre nonetheless. And while this is a let down in terms of extras (by Criterion standards - I had the same issue with their edition of "Le Samourai"), the film is good enough to stand on its' own. Go into this one with minimal expectations, and it makes fine viewing for a lazy Sunday afternoon. And try not to take the other five star reviews on this page too seriously. Its not a five star film by any means.

It's been remastered to its original, uncut version of 106 minutes and has a widescreen presentation that appears more like 2.35:1 in lieu of the 1.85:1 stated on the jacket. The film has numerous green vertical lines in the beginning but disappear altogether as the story progresses. There is full-length commentary from director Alfred Sole and editor Edward Salier. There are no closed captions. The Henstooth edition may prove a better purchase.
Alice Spages (Paula Sheppard) is anything but sweet. In fact, she is a biter, angry mentally unhinged twelve-year-old from a dysfunctional family. She harasses her pretty, young sister Karen (Brooke Shields), plays cruel jokes on her obese, obnoxious landlord Alphonso (Alphonso DeNoble), and disobeys her gorgeous mom Catherine (Linda Miller). When Karen is murdered at her first Catholic communion, it is no wonder Alice is the prime suspect. Soon, other members of her family are attacked by someone wearing a kewpie doll mask and a yellow slicker - exactly like the ones Alice owns.
Expertly directed by Alfred Sole, "Alice, Sweet Alice" is homage to Nicolas Roeg's supernatural horror slasher "Don't Look Now." Both involve killers wearing yellow slickers. "Alice, Sweet Alice" (originally, and more appropriately titled "Communion") works well as both a mystery and a slasher. In fact it is in the same bloody vein as the Italian gialli (murder mysteries) that were highly popular in the late sixties to early seventies.
Paula Sheppard's performance as Alice is superb. Hard to believe she was actually nineteen. He childlike pouting and temper tantrums were extremely convincing. I wanted to slap her silly myself. She needed some tough love in a padded cell.
More popular today than it was when originally released, "Alice, Sweet Alice" is highly recommended for fans of psychological slasher horror, especially with ones that have religious overtones. The ending is gruesome and disturbing; it is not easily forgotten. 』

(a true classic of suspense) 『The first time I saw *Alice, Sweet Alice* was when I was flipping through the TV channels, looking for something good to watch. There's something about this movie because, since the first time I saw it, I've watched it repeatedly. I consider this film a classic because it is still suspenseful after all these years.
After her sister, Karen, is murdered, suspicion falls on Alice, who is just simply a bratty, spoiled child! After all, once you see the yellow raincoat and the mask, you'll assume it's has to be Alice who is the culprit. However, about halfway, you start to have doubts and that is what makes the film worthwhile to watch. And like *Sixth Sense*, you have to watch it again to see if you missed the clues.
*Alice, Sweet Alice* is symbols galore, heavily involving the Catholic church. You just have to watch it again to appreciate all the hidden messages. Thus, this film is a great conversational piece.
After 30 years, this film can still make you bite your nails. Now, I call that a classic!』

I have long wanted to attend one of his many workshops he does, but due to my location and money I have never had the opportunity to do so. This video is the next best things as he you get to see how he goes about his shots while listening to him tell you why he chooses to take a shot this way or with a certain lens over another.
He also goes into his equipment. Many books and help guides do this, but Tony does so in a way that you don't feel like he is endorsing anything specific. He uses Nikon, but as a Canon user I felt I could get very nice shots with what I have now and ideas for pieces I might want to get later as funds allow.
The first part of disk 2 Tony shows us some of his earlier photos and the thought process behind them. His critique of them are invaluable and well worth the price of the DVD alone. It's great to see someone you look up to in a field point out flaws they did. It's like "Wow, he's made the same mistakes as me. I have hope after all!" lol. Of course he also shows some of his newer stuff which is just breathtaking.
Anyone looking for a DVD to help improve their nature photography cannot go wrong with this purchase. I will defiantly be buying some more from this collection by Master Photo Workshops. 』
(I did learn some tricks) 『The first DVD shows Tony trudging around the Smoky mountains and taking pictures. He described the shootings sporadically, as pro photographers would speak to advanced students. Some shootings were described better than others. How he managed lighting to deal with shadows and to enhance textures was instructive. I learned that #10 Magenta filter can be used to give a bit of life to fog, and the variable ND filter made by Singh-Ray can close down the light all the way to 8 stops, and is a great tool for taking blurry flowing water pictures.
I liked the first part of his second DVD much better. In this section, Tony analyzed some of his successful pictures. He made quite useful comments about mistakes in composition, lighting and editing. That is visual literacy proper. It was also interesting to watch him describe his equipment collection.
This DVD set is meant for somewhat advanced students of photography (which I am), but it does not do very well in addressing the usual questions of this group of photographers. So I give three stars.』
(Interesting, but more of a two hour product advert.) 『I live in the UK and I enjoyed watching this video, as there are some fairly good tidbits of info in there, that is if you are advanced enough in the use of photographic jargon, to understand what he is talking about. And, unless you mainly want to shoot waterfalls with eight second exposures, using $400 filters (only available in the US, so add import duties as well for everyone else). Or how to make blurry green and white abstracts using a lens baby combined with a filter that you cannot buy(?) he had one hand made just for him. Then this DVD is of little use to you.
As you would expect, Tony being one of the people at the top of the commercial photography pile, he has access to more lenses, kit, filters and gadgets etc, than your average photog could ever dream of being able to afford, including a second high spec camera converted to infrared use only, with which he took about three images.
But if you are that advanced photographer with a large wad of spare cash burning a hole in you pocket, then this video is just right for you (although if you are, I suspect you would already have all this kit), but for the rest of us mere mortals, I would not recommend it for anything other than aspirational purposes.
UPDATE: Well, I took the plunge and bought the filters, had them shipped over to the UK and took the very large and painful hit in the groin for the import duties ($160 I think it was - thank you Gordon!). Took some shots (so so), then some more (mmm, not too bad) until finally, what do you know, I am making some really quite stunning images. Watched the video several times more and even contacted Tony directly (who was more than happy to chat with me via email - which was very nice of him and he even liked some of the images I sent him - so not too shabby...).
So with what I have learnt from the DVD and the lift it has given my photography, I am going to happily upgrade my 2 star rating to 4 stars. I still cannot give it 5 stars, as I still think the average amateur photographer is not going to be able to afford this kit, and without it the DVD is not going to be much help to them. But if you can afford it and you are obsessed with all things photographic, then I would advise you to dig deep and buy it. But if you are on a really tight shoe string budget, then I could not give the same recommendation.
Tony has a new DVD out called "Visual Artistry" which of course I will buy and which I imagine will severely hurt my pocket once again, but then I remember some advice I once overheard someone say in a book shop, when looking at buying a very expensive book on how to become a Buddhist, he looked at the book in one hand and the money in his other hand, as he weighed up what he should do "what the heck, you only live once!" he said to himself as he headed off to the till to buy it. 』
(Great DVD) 『This is a very inspirational DVD. It is fun and a bit of a tutorial as well; it is a lot of fun to watch Tony Sweet set up his Nikons and go at it - even though I am a Canon shooter it was great nevertheless. I would consider my self as a advanced amateur photographer; I was able to pick up a few techniques from this DVD as well as some more gear. If you enjoy photography as much as I do I am sure you'll have a great time, very nice, professional and again fun. 5 stars hands down!』

This is a two DVD set. The first DVD takes the viewer along with Tony for a multi-day shoot in the Smokies in the Spring of 2008. Tony visits Cades Cove, Roaring Fork, Greenbrier, Tremont, and Clingman's Dome to create images at some of the prime locations in the park. Having been to the Smokies many times, these locations were very familiar. But it was interesting to see how Tony worked the locations and the lighting.
Here's an example of how the DVD flows. At the Ogle cabin in Roaring Fork, Tony goes to a familiar composition and talks you through his thought process for composition. Tony creates multiple compositions to work the site with everything from long lenses to close ups and IR and talks you through everything he is doing and why.
The second DVD takes the viewer into the studio to explore a variety of close up and macro techniques for florals. Then the DVD covers the editing process, the commercial side of professional photography, and the gear Tony uses in the field and the studio for photographs, editing and printing. I found the section about photographing flowers in the studio a little slow, but worth it to pick up important nuggets.
Each DVD has extra features that are worth a look. The Extra feature of the first DVD puts you in the car with Tony while he scouts locations in Cades Cove. Buckle your seat belt!
This is certainly one of the better purchases I've made. I own several of Tony's books, and have spent a great deal of time in the Smokies at these locations. But there is something about seeing these locations and the thought process of a great photographer at work. (Vietnam;The Early Days) 『GO TELL THE SPARTANS is a film that makes clear much of the thought and rationale for our involvement in Vietnam. Lean, stripped down, almost documentary in structure and form it tells the story of early advisers and a small bloody battle that was an indicator for what was to come. Burt Lancaster and Marc Singer deliver first rate performances and the small cast of mainly unknown and character actors only lend to the realism. A must have film for anyone interested in the history of the Vietnam War and in gaining a clearer perspective of our entanglements there.』

(A Grunt's Eye View) 『This is an exceptionally good movie on the absurdity of the Military trying to fulfill a mission, but unfortunately the politicians, bureaucrats, and "Career Soldiers" [not Professional Soldiers]ran the show from 8,000 miles away in Washington D.C. This happens more than people will believe; that local commanders are not free to use their initiative to carry out the missions. Civilians should give the military a mission, then get the hell out of the way. This was especially true in Vietnam under L.B.J. and Mr. McNamara, who literally ran the war out of the Oval Office daily on an hourly basis. The absurdity of the war can be shown with the Easter Offensive and Linebacker-2, in 1972 when President Nixon declared ALL of North Vietnam a target. To get the North back to the peace talks from their new Offensive against South Vietnam, he sent wave after wave of B-52's North dropping bombs which brought the North to the edge of total collapse. This could have been done in 1966, and think of all of the lives on both sides that could have been spared. Instead, they were busy "sending messages" about what America could do, but was 'beneficent' in holding back. This movie is based on a true story, but not one likely to go down in the annals of greatness of the US Army. And it was absolutely an omen of how things would go in that war. We could not win in the manner in which the war was fought. The movie also shows the camaraderie, and the willingness of the soldiers to carry out the mission, regardless of how hopeless-take it from a Scout with the 1St Cavalry Division who knows. One of the two best movies on Vietnam, the other being, "A Rumor of War."』

(A truly great, no nonsense movie!) 『The very first movies, relied upon exaggerated acting and the actors' good looks. Then, along came the 'talkies' - and voices assumed great importance. With the advent of 'talkies' came the necessity to tell a good story - cinematically. Today, the emphasis is all on 'special effects', 'shock value', 'sex, and foul language.
For a relatively brief period between the coming of talkies and the modern cinematographic masterpieces, there was a halcyon period where excellently acted and expertly directed films were made of exceptionally good stories - often based on first rate novels.
'The Sweet Smell of Success' is one such movie. The actors are highly competent, the acting is superb, the story is great and the direction is first rate. 'The Sweet Smell of Success' comes together exceptionally well and is a first rate movie in all respects.
I would recommend it to anyone who wishes first rate entertainment.』
("AN APPLE MADE OF ARSENIC.") 『One of the problems with studying in film school, being a movie buff and getting older is that at some point in ones' life a man ventures into the video store, peruses the shelves and reaches the conclusion that he has seen every movie worth seeing. I thought I was getting there until a few years ago when I heard about and checked out "The Sweet Smell of Success". It was like that with "Chinatown", which I never saw until the 1990s and now consider one of the best films ever. "Sweet Smell of Success" holds up totally even though it is black-white, set in 1957. Burt Lancaster is J.J., based on Walter Winchell, who was a leading accuser of Communists in the media. Tony Curtis is a lackey publicist who lives on the whim of those who pay him to place items in various columns, which means he must grovel at the feet of clients and columnists. J.J. plays him like a fiddle. This has lines so vitriolic and perfect, Frank Manciewics in "All About Eve" is no more biting, and Bette Davis in "Eve" bites with the best of 'em. Lancaster just fills the screen with irony and sardonic, hurtful wit. Curtis fends it off with skill, it is like a fencing match. Anybody who has any desire to study dialogue must watch and memorize this. Everything is tremendous; the acting, the directing, the score, the noir shadows of New York at night. The music is unreal, lots of horns, filling the room with its wailing sobs of a corrupt, naked city. A love story between J.J.'s little sis and a musician (Martin Milner I think, who was in "Adam 12"), is the heart of the story. It is the one true, good thing, but J.J. is a monster. Perhaps Bob Towne had this in mind when he cast John Huston to be an incestuos father in "Chinatown". The inference, being the '50s, is much more subtle but it seems J.J. has the hots for sis and wants nobody to have her. He brands the musician a Commie, using sycophant secondary journalists to keep his own hands clean. Any chance for this dark one to have a happy ending goes down the tubes when sis, as much to torment her bro, kills herself. Curtis is utterly ammoral. His picture appears in Webster's next to the word ammoral. Many films have played off this theme. "Swimming With Sharks" (1996, Kevin Spacey, Frank Whaley) comes to mind. If this could be 20 stars I'd give it 20.』
(smart, sharp, thrilling, and made me shiver) 『I watched this film several months ago, and still the characters stand out sharply in my mind. Tony Curtis plays Sid Falco marvelously, as a man whose mind is quick with an excuse, an accusation, a bit of flattery, whatever the occasion calls for; this is a small, slick man, swimming around the ankles of larger and more powerful men. He knows he's an unscrupulous guy, but wants to work his way up the food chain. Sometimes you think he cares about going too far in his pursuit of fame and wealth - Curtis gives Falco moments of blank pause, expressions of troubled calculation - but he goes ahead anyway with every dirty plot he thinks will serve him well. As the cold colossus J.J. Hunsecker, Burt Lancaster seriously gave me chills; he delivers a brilliant and well-controlled performance. He's sharp and clean, with his powerful stature, squared jaw, and steely glasses; his speech is quiet and precise, and even his little gestures seem to send ripples through the room. I also quite enjoyed Susan Harrison as his sister, Susan, who's winsome and worn down, but still firm enough to try and get out from under her older brother's thumb; I liked how even though she's nineteen, she's got old, tired eyes, an older spirit.
I loved the screaming bright lights and deep shadows of New York City, the energy that ran through the film in electric currents. I enjoyed peering into every bar and jazz club and seedy room that Sid Falco pops up in. I liked how Susan and her beau, a steady and honest jazz musician, seem to speak in clear, round tones while Falco's and Hunsecker's dialogue comes out in a sharp patter, full of quick sharp stabs and quiet turns of the knife. (Holy Crap!!) 『I always sort of put off seeing this even though I've heard good things about it. I think it was because Tony Curtis is in it and the only thing I've ever seen him do were really bad introductions to some Alfred Hitchcock DVDs. In those introductions, Curtis fumbled his lines (which were often filled with errors) and so I assumed he was the worst actor in the world. I should kick myself.
This movie is not only one of the best "noir" films I've seen but one of the best movies I've ever seen PERIOD.
It's included in the noir category despite it not being a crime drama at all. The reason for this is it's shadow-filled cinematography and its theme of corruption. According to this movie, human beings are bleak, cold-hearted creatures.
It's about a Broadway columnist (played by Burt Lancaster in one of his best roles) who manipulates everyone he comes in contact with. He is one of the vilest, cold-hearted bastards I've ever seen in a movie because he's just so real. This isn't a noir hit-man in a fedora hat. This guy could be real and I'm sure some of us have met or will meet someone like him. Tony Curtis plays a bastard publicity agent though you sort of feel bad for him even despite his faults. He's the "protagonist" and we are told the story through his eyes. There are a couple of characters who have integrity and are not so corrupted but they only count as victims of the manipulation.
The acting is top-notch. Both Lancaster and Curtis had me in awe throughout the whole movie. Usually movies about "show business" don't interest me all that much but this movie was fascinating. This is dark look at NYC life in the 1950s. Here it was not. Often,on the products page, Amazon does not offer all the information of a product they are selling. This is one case where it happened, and the end results made a big difference in how my purchase affected me. In reading over the website description, there is no mention that WHEAT is an ingredient in the peanut bar! I am allergic to wheat. I discovered the inclusion when having an allergic reaction to the bar after eating. I would not have purchased them if I had known an allergen was in the product. I have ordered two boxes of this product that I had to offer to others as it cannot be returned to Amazon.
If you have no issues with wheat, then this is a great, not too sweet, satisfying snack bar.
But, Please,Amazon, be more diligent in the listing of ingredients for edible products.

(A Kind Story....) 『I don't usually read books like this one. However, I read this one in two days, every spare moment. The characters were believable and were all "nice" people. One of the things that impressed me is that it wasn't a book centered around crisis. It was centered around interaction between the characters, as diverse as they were. I highly recommend this book for a pleasant break. If it was summer, I'd call it a beach read. It's relaxing. But since it's winter, get a lap blanket, a cup of something hot, open the window a crack to hear the rain and read this book!

The first few pages had me laughing so hard I was crying. Last year my 81 year old mother spent six months in a nursing home in the Northern California Bay Area. As you can imagine, so many things in this book resonated with me, least but not last the home "parties" (where mostly everyone is either wheeled in or walked in with help to do whatever the activities are even if they are here in the present or not, how one is showered, the endless blaring of t.v.s, the underlying scent of other odors, and so on. Anyway, absolutely loved it and look forward to more from Mr. Johnson.』
(A GREAT addition to a book collection!! One you'll read over and over again) 『If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll notice that I've always said that you always know a good book when you've finished it and continue to think about the book...it's story...it's characters...well this is one of them. I have to say that it's selections like this that make me SO thankful to be in the Amazon Vine program. I can't say that this would have stuck out at me had it not been offered for me to review and I'm SO glad that I did. This book is an absolute gem! I love that it's so sweet, innocent, so simply yet dives so deeply into the characters where you can almost SEE their faces and expressions in your mind, your heart breaks when Mr. Benny gets 'hurt' because you understand the characters and know how deeply incidents in their life effects them. You see the insensitivity of older children and how sons /daughters / daughter in laws can be so distant and detached and how the heart, soul and mind of a loved one is still very much the same even though their body no longer is as the age. This is a wonderful book that gives you insight about life while living in a nursing home but it's so much more...it's about life, love and loss. I had read this book at least 3 times now since I received it and love it more every time I read it. This is definitely worth buying and cherishing.』

The reviews I read prior to purchase indicated the fabric covering the seat maybe a problem, but I have not found this to be a big issue. It's hot here in Texas and I think the fabric helps to keep the babies cool so I was happy with that. I really like the fat tires; they provide added cushioning along with the shocks making for a very smooth ride. It's easy to steer, moves with little effort. I am really happy with the jogger and pleased with the price. I had a BOB prior to this purchase and the Instep jogger actually works better for me.』
(Jogging Stroller) 『This stroller has been perfect for us. It is very easy to push and maneuver even while pushing a 2 and 4 year old. I use it strictly for walking within my neighborhood on sidewalks. The few times I have had to go 'off-road', it was still manageable but I don't know if I would do it for long distances. The sun shade is very large and provides adequate coverage. There is ample storage underneath the stroller as well as a smallish soft holder you can attach to the handlebar that can hold keys or a cellphone (or a small water bottle). My complaints: the seats do not have a lot of back cushioning. If you have children who like to sleep in the stroller, you would need a blanket to cushion around the head and back. Secondly, you have to take the front wheel off to put the stroller in the trunk. (Although I believe this is pretty standard with double jogging strollers.) Lastly, the handlebar grip is already starting to wrinkle and tear slightly in a few places. However, complaints aside, I would highly recommend this stroller to anyone who is looking for an easy-to-push stroller for exercising.』
(super stroller!) 『I bought this stroller for my 3 1/2 yr old and my 1 yr old and they love it! It's a great running stroller because the front wheel is fixed, as oppposed to an unstable and shaky swivel wheel. I also love that it's easy to fold up and pop the wheels off. It even fits into my very small Nissan Versa hatchback- YES, this is true!! My husband also likes the stroller- he runs a lot faster than I do and he said it's a smooth ride and easy to control. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of five is because, as other reviews have stated, it needs better seat cushions. My older daughter complained immediately that it was uncomfortable, but I gave her a little blanket to rest her head, problem solved! Oh well, other than that it's a great stroller and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to go out running with their kids.』
(Great value for the money!) 『I was hesitant to buy this stroller for a few reasons. In Step strollers in general have mixed reviews, and I wasn't sure I would be getting something quality because the price is so low. I agonized over the decision, spent weeks researching, deciding, changing my mind....I finally decided on this one because of the price, and the weight of the stroller. I have 2 toddlers who weigh 60 pounds together, so I wanted a lightweight jogger. I was concerned that the fixed wheel might bother me, but it doesn't at all. Some reviews mentioned tires going flat, or the stroller pulling to one side, but I haven't had either of those problems. I love this stroller, my kids and I have put many miles on it this summer. The only way this stroller could be improved is if the sunshade locked. I live in a windy area, and the sunshade gets whipped back often. But that doesn't bother me enough to give this stroller any less than 5 stars!』

A few things you might be wondering (I know i was): the "red" is actually orange; the seats are orange mesh and have a zippered pocket behind each one, there IS a removable undercarriage basket included with the stroller; and the best part- is DOES fit through standard doorways. Yes, the double stroller fits through my front door, the doors at the mall, the zoo, etc. Although that's all a bonus because I bought this stroller to run with-which is what the stroller is, in fact, made for. On that note-the fixed wheel is a great feature. It is very light, the handbreak is nice, and it has a nice little basket-type thing that can be attached to the handlebar for keys, phone, id, etc. My one complaint is that the seats are pretty far reclined. This is expected with a jogging stroller though, and I simply knot the adjustment strap behind the seat once or twice before latching to shorten it up, thereby raising the seat-back a little. My other small complaint is that there is no latch or mechanism to keep the stroller closed when folded. Not a big deal, but slightly annoying at times. The front wheel is removable with a quick-release mechanism. I drive a Honda Element and the stoller folds and fits with the front wheel still attached in my trunk area like a glove. I just pot it out of the trunk and go. Overall, this is a super stroller. There are things though. First is that the strap/band is way too short. I clasped it at the second to the last hole. I think this watch is great for any women with a very very tiny wrist because the band was too small for my regular sized wrist. I wanted it to look bulky and bigger size but it didn't. It just made it look like a mid sized ordinary watch. Second is that the band is made of resin material, meaning it is a hard plastic and it feels awkwardly wet the minute you perspire as it brushes your skin. I took it out a few times to dry. Third, it's not user friendly when it comes to setting the date and time etc esp for people who don't like reading manuals. 4th, is that the mineral screen is way too light for anyone who has eye problems... I don't have one yet I have to squint and stare at it for awhile to check the time.... I gotta say, it's all about the looks because it does look very gorgeous... I wanted to return it but decided not to. I don't wanna pay the restocking fee... I'll still wear it though but I'll look for another bigger watch soon...』
