my dogs love the sweet potato chew! agreed that it isnt very chewy, but it occupies them for a little which is nice. i have two little shih tzu's and they usually eat them in 5ish minutes. my dogs love the taste and i love that its healthy.
My Springer Spaniel ate them right away but the Malamute sniffed it a lot and finally ate them. I'll stick with the Happy Hips Chicken products.
My yellow lab destroys everything. These chews keep her occupied for a bit AND they are healthier than raw hyde.
My dogs love the Dogswell supplements made from chicken, so I assumed they'd also like the sweet potato supplements. Neither of them would eat it! Even my aggressive chewing lab didn't like these. They're almost impossible to chew (unless I soak them in boiling water for at least 30 minutes, which presumably would leech the nutrients from the chews). When the lab first tried these, they cut her gums, and when she would leave pieces of the chew on the floor, if I stepped on them before noticing them, they'd cut my foot! I noticed this about ALL the varieties of Dogswells Sweet Potato Chews. I threw them all out.
I like Dogswell products and have purchased the "Vitality" Chicken Chews before (which are actually chewy). But these sweet potato chews are hard as a rock! I seriously couldn't even chew them, it was like biting a lolipop or jawbreaker - way too hard. My dog and my roomie's dog didn't care for them one bit. I purchased them because they were on sale (deeply discounted) and now I know why....

Buy other Dogswell Chews, just not these sweet potato ones...

It took me several weeks after my baby girl was born to find the baby book that I liked and once I finally found it I couldn't find the matching photo album anywhere. Once I searched online I found it on Amazon.com for the best price. It's very girlie and cute!
Great product! My only complaint is that there are pockets that only hold a certain size photo. For example, this album will not hold 5x7's.
I got this as a babyshower gift and really love it. BUT let's be realistic here, how many of these cute little photo albums are we going to need? I wish they made such adorable albums that can hold a HUGE amount of photos. My little girl is only 4 months and we have a total of 732 photos of her...
This album and the matching record book deliver all that they promise. I bought it for my daughter, who is about to give birth to my first grandchild, and she absolutely loves it! And, the colors and patterns even match the nursery! As a added bonus, someone gave me the matching brag book. They're great!

The cups are much smaller than I thought. Smaller than even mini cupcake pans.
I used the Easy Flew silicone mini cups for making mini muffins and other candies as well.. they are really good and worth the price and to top that off.. wilton is my favourite brand so no complaints..
These are fun for making more bite size muffins. I put my banana bread into these for my husband to take with him in the morning for the car. He just pops them in his mouth. It is a little challenging spraying them with PAM but I just put them all really close together and spray then spread them back out on the pan for cooking. Get more than one set and make fun treats for your family!
No more messing around with flimsy paper cups. These baking cups can be used with your regular muffin pan or placed individually on a cookie sheet.

The content was perfect.

The stereo imaging was good.

It did not have quite the sparkle as some other restorations.

Well, I have to admit that I'm not a professional jazz listener. Recently I decided to try listening to jazz and bought this album since I was familar with some of the songs. And I absolutely loved it. This music makes you feel good and think good. Besides it makes you happy. (and try a couple of dance moves when you are alone) I absolutely recommend it...
I am new to big band music, and I think this is a great collection of Glenn Miller. This album has great sound quality and a good overall track selection.
This is the best Glenn Miller CD ever produced. It has all the great tunes from the 40s. If you like Glenn Miller, this is a must buy!
This is probably the best intro CD to Glenn Miller. It is missing some great songs including "Sunrise Serenade" and "Anvil Chorus", which are two of my favourites. For individuals concerned with the sound quality; there are some very unnatural anomalies created due to trying to eliminate the clicks and pops. The anomalies are often very non-musical and distracting. There is a OOP 3 CD set titled "The Popular Recordings (1938-1942)" that I keep going back to as the most natural sounding recordings I have of Glenn. If timbre and tonality matter to you, the 3 CD set may suit your tastes better; but this CD set has more prominent clicks and pops (because they are there and they cannot go away cleanly regardless of modern technology). Also to note, the material covered by the 3 CD set really has a far greater breadth of material.

The warmth and feeling of this kind of jazz are never reached in the more modern styles of jazz.
Everyone thinks of Miller and Goodman when Big Bands are brought up, but the Dorseys ruled. "Opus One" is the best known classic, but by far one the best songs ever from that era is "The Music Goes 'Round and 'Round" it's a classic, funny song, reminding us all of our prejudices and foibles. There is a great humor to Tommy Dorsey, lacking in some of the others, and well worth listening to, to understand another facet of the era of Big Bands.
The Dorsey brothers and Glen Miller were the greatest musicians of the World War II era. They kept so much of the public entertained during the war and gave so many Americans (and their allies) hope. Not even Joan Baez and Bob Dillan and their anti-Vietnam War songs are this good. This music is much better than the garbage that people call music today.
The Dorsey band could do everything. The hottest Swing and the smoothest ballads and the liveliest pops and novelties. His band was every inch as good as The Miller, Goodman and Shaw bands and at times, even better!

Dorsey had several bands and his pre 1940 band is very different than his band of 1940 - 1946. The '40s band had a more dynamic sound to it, especially in the Swing instrumentals! Plus...all those great vocalists - Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Connie Haines and the Pied Pipers vocal group, not to mention Dick Haymes, Stuart Foster and the great Clark Sisters aka The Sentimentalists.

The recordings on the CD above are a mixture of 'both' of TD's band of the era.

All the sides on the CD are choice and the only reason I have rated the CD 4 stars out of 5 is because my 'personal best' are not all on there!

And with all due respect to the reviewer below, the version of "Opus One" on this CD *is* the original 1944 recording when TD was featuring a big string section in his band. "Inferior"? No such way.

So many "greatest hits" compilations miss the mark either in quality or song selection. But this disc lives up to its billing as the "Best" of the Dorsey orchestra. It kicks off with one of the stellar and swingiest tunes of the Big Band era, "Opus Number One" (though this version is inferior to the more famous "single" version). It's hard to listen to this song and not appreciate the brilliant arrangement and musicianship displayed here. Along with Goodman's "Sing, Sing Sing" and Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" this has got to be in the top three of any Big Band all-time greatest list.

It's a pity that Dorsey has been somewhat forgotten today and shoved aside in preference of Benny, Glenn and Artie. Was he as good as those giants? No, but this disc shows that his band could swing, had a phenomenal young vocalist named Sinatra and that Tommy's trombone playing wasn't half bad. This is a must have album for anyone serious about the Big Band era.

My daughter (&yes, I too) LOVE this DVD!! The songs are fun&it teaches shapes, colors, and letters (although the ABC's are just one segment so don't be expecting the whole DVD to be devoted to ABC's). BUT I highly recommend it - it's fun&very educational.
My 3 year old son loves this dvd so much that he would play it over and over. He also tried to sing the songs which is really great learning experience.
At first we weren't too sure about the "new" Barney. All the other episodes we own were of the old/original Barney and kids. But our kids don't seem to mind.
I like that there is more than one episode on this dvd. I think there's actually 3. And lots of options.
One thing I didn't like, is I thought that it being called "ABC" would mean they'd actually go through the Alphabet. But in the whole video, they don't say all the letters. They do a couple letter activities (spelling Baby Bop's name), sing a letter song (with only about 10 of the letters in the song), and sing the alphabet once.
My recomendation would be, if you're wanting a video to help your child learn their letters, this is not the one to get. But if you just want a good Barney video for your child to enjoy, go for it. And if they happen to pick up a little bit of letter recognition, great.
My 2 year old loves this DVD, and it is his ritual to watch either this DVD, or another Barney DVD he has, everyday after his bath. He knows the order of the songs by now, and sings along to parts of the songs as well.
My son is 2 1/2 and loves this movie. Since watching it he's taken a great interest in shapes (particularly triangles)! This DVD is also great for helping him continue to learn his letters.
Preschool fundamentals--including shapes, colors, and the alphabet--are the focus of this one-hour program set in the after-school learning center familiar to viewers ofBarney&Friends. Today, everyone is preparing for an art show, which provides plenty of scope for Barney's gentle tutorials on circles, squares, reds, and blues, while he incorporates beloved songs such as "Mister Sun." Viewers will be inspired by the students' art projects (which are easily replicated at home) as well as the lesson on mixing colors to create new hues. Then it's off to Baby Bop's tea party, a perfect segue into the realm of ABC's. As Baby Bop learns to spell her name, there are plenty of rhyming games and alphabet songs to incite audience participation. While lacking the originality of some of Barney's earlier music videos, there is no denying this lineup of merry songs and feel-good familiarity make this a cozy stroll into Barney's world. Marrried With Children, what a great sitcom and then some! Some people hated this show as a salute to disfunction, BUT there is a lot more truth in their episodes than many people want to aknowledge.

Here we have a Bundy take on "It's A Wonderful Life", it's Christmas eve and with Peggy and kids off to Denny's for their annual Christmas Eve feast, Al has a rare moement of clarity, wishing he could give his family more and thinking that they would be better off without them.

Enter the late Sam Kinison, as the Angel. The Angel shows Al what his family would be like at Christmas without him. We see Peggy, dressed as a Donna Reid clone, baking Christmas cookies, Kelly returns home for the holidays from her studies, dressed in preppy clothing (to put it midly), and not worring about her lack of a sex life. Bud dressed to the nines, plays the ultimate ladies man. Ted McGinley plays their father, and for Christmas he announces he had bought them a new house as the ultimate present. Al's take on this?, he wisely asks, "can you taste the bile".

Happily all was a dream, and when Al wakes up his dejected family returns, unable to have taken in Denny's cuisine as the prices went up.

This episode of Fox's Married..With Children is a true Christmas classic. It first aired on December 24,1989(not the 17th as stated on tv.com). Steve Rhoades(David Garrison) spends the holidays with his widowed mother. She came to get him via taxicab from her Cincinatti home! So his wife Marcy(Amanda Bearse) spends Christmas alone. Marcy is "getting down" at the Christmas Eve party at the bank where she works as a drive-thru window teller,her demotion from accountant. After patriarch Al Bundy(Ed O'Neill) receives a shock from a faulty live wire from his Christmas light set,he falls asleep and dreams what life would be like if he were dead. In the dream sequence,a guardian angel(the late great Sam Kinison) shows Al what is happening in his wife Peg's(Katey Sagal)(fictitious)second marriage. Peg married a sophisticated man named Norman Jablonski(guest star and future MWC cast member Ted McGinley). Daughter Kelly(Christina Applegate) and son Bud(David Faustino) are college students. Take note of how all four are dressed in 1950's fashions. "I want my family back!",exclaims a desperate Al. Also,at the shoe store where Al works and manages as well,he entertains an army of young children,only for them to be met with disappointment. Their parents pay for them to be babysat and are later refunded. This episode is from Married...With Children-The Complete Fourth Season in two parts. This episode had a special closing montage. Instead of Al and Peg sitting on their living room sofa,we see a night scene of the Bundy house with a snow-covered ground and we hear IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS performed by an unknown ensemble. McGinley, of Happy Days fame,joined MWC in late 1990,playing Jefferson D'Arcy,who would become Marcy's second husband(her marriage to Steve ended in sudden divorce). Another episode similar to this is YOU BETTER WATCH OUT from 1987. In that episode,Santa Claus is found dead in the Bundys' backyard.
EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THIS FUNNY,FUNNY MOVIE! THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT TODAY!!!
This homage - of -sorts to the Jimmy Stewart classic is already a classic of its' type. With a shock to his system, Al awakens to find an angel - his angel, who has been called to help Al decide if his " loved ones " would be better off without him, if he had never been born. With anger, angst and humor, The Angel ( Sam Kinison ) arrives, not without his own issues and proceeds to give Al a look of how life might have been. Peggy somehow became a Leave It To Beaver style mom, complete with apron and french Twist...Bud, a sweater and tie wearing geek who has become almost courtly and Kelly - a plaid skirt and ponytailed Virgin Barbie. Did Peggy Sue get married ? You bet your Bundy she did, but to a handsome man who lifts them all from drudgery and middleclass living to life in a mansion. The lucky husband later was signed to the show as jefferson D'Arcy - also known as Mr Marcy. Here, he is somewhat of a snob, but loving the family. Obviously, Al comes to a few self - realizations and makes the decision of a lifetime. OK, it ain't Shakespeare, but it is a welcome respite from the usual holiday fare.
I grew up watching Married with Children and was very disappointed when the show ended. I was grateful to watch reruns on late night television until recently time slots changed and I am no longer able to watch. Thus I begun my search to find the series to purchase as many other shows such as Friends and Little House on the Prairie have come out with, but found bitter disappointment in the realization that there are no season's available for purchase. Then in my search I stumbled across this classic episode and purchased it on the spot. It is outrageously funny, the only thing I still could want is the entire series!!

Just like the Virginian or any of Zane Grey's heroes, L'Amour's gentlemen, Conagher, is a true hero. He is a larger than life man who knows who he is and lives by his own code; a code of honest integrity. I have been privileged to know one or two of these types and they are rare; but that is what makes Conagher worth watching.
An hombre very tough meets a ready made family while trailing rustlers as a range cowboy. As westerns go this is probably a new classic.
It has Indian fights, lonesome death on the trail by accident, stagecoaches and real cowboys, fighting rustlers.
To top that off there is a love story...
A good old time western in the typical Louis L'Amour style. Sam Elliott does a good job in the character of Conager. A time when right had a right to hold it's own. A good western well worth buying. You can't top Louis L'Amour.....good acting by all.
Sam Elliot and Katharine Ross are, as always, awesome in this movie! They make a wonderful team who I think portray Louis Lamour's story exactly the way he envisioned as he was writing the book. It is a classic western movie and a wonderful tribute!
I am so tickled to finally have this movie... I have looked for years and this is one of my all time favorites.... I love the story line and the actors... very romantic, very touching... great to watch anytime... makes you feel warm .....and hey Sam is easy on the eyes!

I don't know about the first guy, and american homophobia and its relation to this movie. All I know is every guy has a friend their wife hates. Essentially thats what this movie is about. Not the love between guys blah blah. Yes guys love each other especially our close friends, and who doesn't talk about their sex lives with their buddies? That first guy is an idiot!
Seriously these guys make like a hundred movies a year since there debut in KNOCKED UP in 2007.Its seriously getting really annoying especially since i work at the movie thetare its so sad there constantly makeing films man they need the money that bad. The movie was alright worth to see BUT DO NOT SPEND TOO MUCH on the dvd wait till it comes on tv and pay like under 5 dollars for it.

"I Love You, Man" is a very smart comedy starring Paul Rudd (as Peter Klaven) and Jason Segel (as Sydney Fife). It's all about relationships between men. When Peter realizes that all of his friends are women, he decides to go on a journey to find male friends. Besides, he is getting married and in need of groomsmen.
Peter goes on a series of "man-dates" and the movie becomes more fun by the minute. Peter becomes tongue-tied as he searches for the perfect man, Peter's young brother played by Andy Samberg is gay and he and his mother (Jane Curtin) help fix Peter up with his straight male dates. The gay jokes fly but they are in no way offensive. There are some very funny moments here.
All of the performances are excellent and this is the perfect flick for a summer afternoon.

Paul Rudd, alum of several Judd Apatow movies such as Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin, stars as Peter Klaven who, mere weeks away from his wedding to Zooey (Rashida Jones of "The Office" fame), realizes that he has no male friends. This isn't due to social ineptitude, however; Peter gets along well with both sexes but primarily his sensitivity is attuned to friendships with women. In order to seek out a best man aside from his gay brother (SNL's Andy Samberg) or father, Peter goes on several "man dates" in order to deepen his pool of males with whom to bond. One man in particular, Forgetting Sarah Marshall's Jason Segel, appropriately fits the bill, and the two men embark on a friendship that forms the core of this movie.
I Love You, Man explores an interesting facet of male relationships, an area often twisted in other movies into homosexual innuendo. Fortunately, though, the story of I Love You, Man doesn't take this path, instead choosing to enlighten the viewer through crude humor, slapstick comedy, and witty discussion. Though not written by Apatow, those who saw his aforementioned movies will undoubtedly enjoy what this movie brings to the table. Rudd and Segel are a great comedy team; it's nice to see Rudd especially break out on his own. There are several points throughout the movie where the "man dates" closely resemble heterosexual dates, and Rudd shows his acting skill at making the situation uncomfortable for both his character and the viewers.
All in all, I Love You, Man is a solid comedy, closely following Knocked Up as a movie that can be enjoyed both by men who enjoy off-color humor, as well as women who will appreciate the emotional back-and-forth between the characters involved. Recommended.

My 18 month old loves "NUMBERS NURSERY". After watching it two times, he was reciting 1-5, and within a week he has learned 1-10. I don't know if it was the video or his age, but I was amazed at the results. It keeps him entertained, as does all the Einstein videos!
Teaching babies the numbers 1-5 is great and all, but I am beyond perplexed why in the world Baby Einstein stopped at the number 5. Do they really think that babies can't learn more than that? Good grief! They are just getting started there! This DVD is very entertaining. Indeed,it is mostly entertainment as the numbers one through five will be mastered in very short order there by making it pure entertainment. Save your money and buy Rochard Scary's Best Counting Video Ever. It is just as entertaining (if not more so) and goes to number 20, withj lots of cute dialogue that babies love. Similarly, check out Leap Frog Letter Factory (for letters) and Trebellina (for music). You won't be disappointed.
NUMBERS NURSERY IS THE BEST! My husband and I are both teachers and we love Baby Einstein educational videos. Although the numbers nursery says that it goes 1-5; there is a special tab on the menu that shows a video for numbers 1-10. My daughter is 16 months and is able to say and recognize numbers 1-10. Of course we worked with her individually but the numbers nursery video is also a great asset as well. It is an extension of what you are already doing with your child. DEFINITELY BUY THIS VIDEO. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
These movies are well loved by my little girl ever since she was 3 months. (she's 10m now) They capture her attention and are a big help for those "bad days." Plus they're instructive and refreshingly simple with soothing classical music.

BE Numbers Nursery is great fun with no obnoxious songs that get stuck in tired mothers' minds. I highly recommend it over some of the other B.E. videos! Great for Baby and Mom!
I had heard of Baby Einstein in passing by other people but since my children are grown and in college...except for one that is in High School I didn't have to be in the new ways of teaching children(babies) how to learn their numbers and shapes. Now, that I'm a grandparent I started looking for different ways that I could not only entertain but educate my grand child. I came across Baby Einsten Numbers and Shapes Discovery Cards. Wow, how things have changed in 22 years anyway my grad daughter seem to be captivated by the colors...it was then that I saw that two different videos(dvd) went with the cards(this being one of them and Baby Newton) to help re-enforce what the children see on the cards and vise versa.

When I first showed my grand daughter the video she was anything but intrested but I put it in a little later after she had ate and took her nap and she was just enthralled by what she was looking at on the tape.

I wish they had these when my children were growing up but one thing is for sure my grand daughter will be a Baby Einstein baby...I have already ordered other products and can't wait for them to arrive and watch my grand daughter's face.

I started giving these to my daughter when she was 9 months. She loved them so much her first word was cracker (while signing more)! They dissolve in her mouth so I don't have to worry about choking. And they are healthy too. I highly recommend it.
I really didn't notice Elmo on the package? These are for kids more than adults. Nothing wrong with flavor, but priced for kids that scream alot.

My wife and I were looking for a better tasting high protein bar and these are by far the best we have tasted. (And trust me, we have tasted a lot) They have a great blend of flavors and the sweet/salty nature is enough to curb any "sweets" cravings I get.
My kids start their day with 1/2 of these every morning. I know their getting protein with some "whole" foods in it and they like the chocolate aspect to it. Much better than some cereals out there.
Balance Bare Bar is undoubtedly the best nutritional bar out there. Besides being delicious (especially the peanut butter) and nutritious, it has REAL soy ingredients which has helped me get rid of hot flashes, insomnia, and mood swings. I never thought a nutritional bar could taste so good and at the same time be so good for me! Now that I know it really works, I always keep a stash at work and at the house -- even my picky 11-year old loves it as his after-school snack.
I think Balance Bar's "Sweet&Salty" line (there are 3 flavors) is the best-tasting bar out there! And the fact that it's nutritionally balanced is a great plus as well.
These are really good but be careful you'll pack on pounds if you're not careful because you want more than one.

Taste is ok but it does not BBQ well, it dries up and flakes off making the food look disgusting.

Maybe ok as a dip but i havent tried that yet.

I'll be honest the product itself is good, but Shatila is the worst service you can find online. They will never return your emails and their staff are computer illerterate. If you call they are not very helpful. The person I talked to could not find my orders or emails I sent them (I sent 3). I was told they will ship whenever she finds the order (that was about 5 days after I spoke to them and 12 days after I ordered).

They will arrive in the required time line, but you will get them at the last possible day they are required for you to receive it. They ship over a week late with 2 day air. I wonder if I would have ever received it if I didn't call and complain.
Out of this world taste, better than best!! Wonderful package presentation in good taste. Order filled within 2 days, but shipping FedEx is slow. Mouth watering talent undeniable. First thoughts were that Shatila did it all as unto the Lord. You will go far!!
These are great! Delicious, recommend them to anyone who likes Middle Eastern pastries, probably the best you can buy online.

I bought this toy for my grandson's 2nd birthday next month, at the request of his mother , so I don't know how he'll like it, but I know that Melissa and Doug toys are highly rated for their durability and ease of use for little ones. I myself love how brightly the toys are colored, and the fact that they are made for little hands.
I love these puzzles for my grandson. They are so easy for his little fingers to grab, they are colorful and have a nice texture. They are educational and age appropriate. I would highly recommend these puzzles.
I was looking for this puzzle in particular for my little girl since it is the "girliest" one M&D have in the chunky puzzles. It is very cute and functional, but the sides and backs of the pieces are not painted like the other chunky puzzles I have. The particleboard is left raw and of course, goes straight into our 12-month olds mouth, so it is beginning to puff up in some spots. I expected better from Melissa and Doug as I have many of their other toys and love them. Otherwise, it's a good puzzle, just like the other chunky puzzles my older son loved so much.

Both my boys have loved this puzzle to pieces. I bought it when my older son was just over a year old and he spent hours learning each shape and color and fitting it into the puzzle. Everntually I packed it away... and brought it out when my younger son started to show an interest in shapes. He loves it, too! I have to search the house for the pieces because he loves to carry them around. This is the best money I have spent on any toy to date.
I ordered this to use with a student that has severe special needs. He is legally blind, and has some fine motor difficulties. I am happy to report that he is able to effectively pick up the pieces and put them into the correct spots with minimal assistance. The colors are nice and bright and the quality exceptional.
This puzzle was fun and educational. My 2 year old granddaughter could handle the shapes with those little fingers. After she realized they would stand alone, it became a train of shapes. The colors were vibrant and another lesson for her. Great fun for us.

I found these shoes to look stylish and coordinate with most outfits. I've purchased them in brown and they're a quick pair to put on when I want to look nice in a hurry. They are fairly comfortable except for the back part by the ankle and the top edges of the shoe which are very stiff. The soles of the shoes are flexible but the uppers are stiff and are rough on the back of the ankle. The upper is also very low (flat) which works better if toes are free from bumps. I'm working on breaking them in for more comfort since they're nice looking shoes. They're a good value for the price ($9.99) but hopefully they'll be comfortable once broken in.

...and would be better if the front wheel wasn't fixed. It's ok when you need to go straight but turns are a pain! I'm not using it for jogging, but walking on different terrains, works great in sand/grass, not so great on pavement curves! Will never purchase fixed wheel stroller again.
This stroller is not for little toddlers and definitely not for babies in arms. It swam around my daughter when we got it at 6 months and it was only after she turned one we could use it at all. The shoulder harnesses don't hold her in now that she's grown more, and they're adjusted so she's pinned against the back of the stroller. She just slips her arms out the sides. The lap harness is hard to fasten. You HAVE to raise the front tire if you want to turn, and the front wheel has always seemed a little off balance, no matter what I try. I would not recommend this stroller at all.
i ret this item as soon as it arrived bc the box itself said only up to 50 lbs...i have a 3yr old who already is tall and 40lbs...we go for 3-5mi walks and i wouldnt spend that kind of money on sumthing we will not get much use out of...so be careful when reading the product descriptions they are not always accurate
I got this for my husband and he absolutely loves it! He really likes the big wheels and says it's perfect for him. I, however, don't like that the front wheel is fixed. It's very hard for me to maneuver it. I didn't know the wheel was fixed when I purchased it so please make sure you know that before you buy a jogging stroller!

I've played only 3 times using the balls marked with the Check-GO. I played very well the first time, scoring lower than I had in months. (A marvelous book)

Wouldn't it be just grand to place a click on the 1-Click ordering and buy "A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams," a Caldecott 2009 Honor book? After all, I obtain the Gold Medal book and the honor books every year for my small school library. It would be grand, but it won't happen.

And the book has such glowing reviews right here on the product page. Why doesn't Amazon offer it for sale? Is it out of print already? A Caldecott Honor book out of print just two months after being named an honor book? Oh yes, I see I can purchase it from independent sellers--three who know how much Caldecott followers long to have it. But I'm afraid my little library cannot afford those prices.

What a sad, sad day.

NOTE: This information was added several hours after the posting of the review. I just checked online with a competitor, who has the book in stock for $13.60. It is also available from the competitor's local book store. I don't know why Amazon does not carry this particular book. It's a mystery.
I bought this for my granddaughter who loves to write, including poetry. She was very appreciative. It's seems like the perfect book for a child who is interested in using words in creative ways.

This is the type of poetry William Carlos Williams wrote, and the type that translates beautifully into the mixed media artwork throughout River of Words. I cannot recommend this book enough. The art acts as a parallel story to the narrative about "Willy." The pictures sometimes do not describe the words of the story, but always perfectly describe the poetry that WCW was writing.
I personally believe that the only thing that kept this book from getting the Caldecott was its age focus. This isn't the type of book that say a six year old could pick up and read without any help. The words of the story are simple enough, but for a child, it would be hard to tell what is the story and what is not.
Start a love of poetry young in children! Show them it isn't all rhyming and convoluted images. Show them that

is a beautiful poem. Mostly, read to your kids. You could be reading them The Anatomy of the Human Body and it would still make an impact. But for something visually stunning that children will learn from and have their creativity sparked, choose this.
This is an absolutely beautiful book about a wonderful and approachable American poet. You will love reading it to your children. Older kids, especially aspiring poets, will love learning about his interesting life. A definite must-have for every family library.
This book is an enchanting pairing of art and words. A children's book that can be enjoyed by everyone, the richness of the poetry is blended beautifully in illustrations and narrative.

This morning, I finished Leonard Sweet's new book, So Beautiful.

I'm still basking in the afterglow and the best words I can use to describe it is: "So Beautiful!!"

I've read several of Sweet's other books, and must say that this is the best by far. In a witty, candid, and thought-provoking style, Sweet grabs the reader immediately and doesn't let go until the last paragraph.

The basic premise of So Beautiful is that congregations need to re-think their values and priorities. The old APC approach: Attractional, Propositional, Colonial (or ABC: Attendance, Buildings, Cash) won't cut it for churches that desire to reach this present generation.

Instead of APC/ABC, Sweet suggests that followers of Christ, as individuals and congregations, capture an MRI ethos:
Missional
Relational
Incarnational.
He then unpacks each of these concepts in detail. It's dynomite!

"Just as DNA's three strands make life possible, three other elements work in harmony to make life not just pretty, but beautiful. And it's in the church where we find the greatest expression, and ultimate fulfillment, of these three components to a beautiful life."

I found myself exclaiming, "Yes! Yes! That's what I want! That's IT! That's Absolutely Beautiful!"

One of the things I like best about Sweet's writing style is that he draws from a wide variety of sources, and packs each page full of pithy phrases, poetry, inspiring quotes, and engaging stories.

There's a ton of grist for the sermon mill! I must have written a dozen pages of notes in my journal -- which will certainly be processed and find their way into my blog, messages and other communications.
Prolific author, speaker and professor of evangelism at Drew University, Leonard Sweet just keeps getting better. Widely lauded as one of the "50 Most Influential Christians in America," Sweet's disarming style and candid approach on matters of life and the church are both contagious and welcoming. His newest offering to fans and newcomers alike will delight, captivate and challenge formerly held assumptions about what it means to "do church" American-style.

Sweet opens his text with an introduction to acronyms...and very cunningly leads into his own, which describes the So Beautiful, or MRI, church on which this text is focused: "M" = Missional, "R" = Relational and "I" = Incarnational. Formerly (currently?), many churches operate under the APC Christianity style, or the ABC Church: Attendance, Buildings and Cash. As Sweet notes, "[S]ome things can be good for you for a short time but bad for you over the long haul." He spends the next couple hundred pages helping fellow Christ followers understand, define and take a much closer look at their faith lives and how it works itself both within and without the confines of a church setting.

The author quite engagingly admits that, through his travels he is finding, "God is 'up to something,' stirring part of the body very slowly to rouse the rest." Exciting. Daunting. Challenging. Eye-opening. Yes, to all of these adjectives.

Beginning with a description and overview of the Missional Life: God's "GO," Sweet tells believers that as soon as they become Christians and tell Jesus they're "in," he turns right around and tells them you're "out." This means to go OUT into the world, don't stay clustered inside a stuffy church building where members only congregate and bewail the woes of the larger world. Go, and be part of that world because we all belong together in it.

Sweet then shares the nuts and bolts of what a Relational Life: God's "YES" looks like...and yes, it's all about getting close to people and making life connections that count. He interestingly notes that to predict those with economic success, look for people who have strong social connections. To predict sound mental and physical well-being, look for close family ties and high-quality relationships. Similarly, those individuals who enjoy spiritual well-being also have tight-knit relationships. As Sweet notes, all of life is about relationships, one to another, and everyone to God.

Closing up this work, Sweet details the Incarnational Life: God's "NO," in which he discusses how "Incarnants" are "those who are in touch with the culture but in tune with the Spirit, embracing and estranging the culture simultaneously." Yet, this is a good thing as believers need to "disturb the world" but do so in love and with a commitment to serve, stand alongside, and bring redemptive repair.

Readers will find great value and a highly practical resource in SO BEAUTIFUL. Be prepared to be challenged, encouraged and motivated to start living an MRI lifestyle.

This book is "sweet"!

Yeah, I know that's corny considering the auther is Leonard Sweet, but I am quite serious. It hit the "sweet" spot. Wow, I did it again.

I had the privilege of downloading the audio book for free from Christian Audio. They feature a free download every month, which is "sweet" as well! I just can't help myself.

Anyway, I don't listen to too many audio books, but I am glad I had this book. On Mother's Day, I drove for 12 hours to visit my mom in Minden, LA. During the drive, I put my iPod ear buds in and listened to the "So Beautiful" audio book. It was refreshing and engaging.

His three points? Missional, Relational, Incarnational. Simple, profound, and, yes, so beautiful.

Len didn't just throw these out as cool buzz words either. He unpacks them in a fresh and relevant story that will sting the heart of the disengaged and rally the broken in spirit.

God is missional. He is actively engaged in history redeeming a people for Himself. The church, whatever form she finds herself in, must be about the Father's business.

God is relational. He is real, loving, embracing. Relationships are central to the Gospel and a key component to being human.

God is incarnational. He became flesh and is still being fleshed out. We must live in the world. We must be in the world, not of the world, and defiantly out of the world. We must "re-inhabit" our world. We are here to bring Him here. Oh, this is "so beautiful."

This is my first Len Sweet book, but it shall NOT be my last.

Leonard Sweet has written an engaging and challenging book in "So Beautiful: Divine Design for Life and the Church". He paints a vivid picture of the DNA of the church as three essential complementary strands of Christian life - missional, relational, and incarnational. He weaves together this view drawing from Scripture, the life of John Newton, the biological wonder of life, along with an engaging writing style that helps us better understand the nature of the church and how we may live more like Christ. The key contrast in the book is between a modern style of church that is becoming an increasingly poor fit with culture, and one he believes is closer to the intent of God. The style he cautions against is APC - Attractional, Propositional, and Colonial, while the one he proposes is MRI - Missional, Relational, and Incarnational, better reflecting God's interaction with the world and His hope to reconcile man back to Himself. He addresses in a considerate way some significant challenges facing the local church today but without calling us to abandon it - he pulls together the needs to serve both within and beyond the church. (An approach I appreciate very much, there's no shortage of books focused on bashing down the church itself.) For example, Sweet notes that in the Gutenberg era the watch phrase was: everyone is called to be a minister, your baptism is your ordination into ministry. In today's Google world, "everyone is dispatched to be a missionary. Your baptism is your commissioning as a missionary. We are both ministers and missionaries. Every disciple has a ministry to the body and a mission in the world. Your baptism is both an ordination certificate and a passport to a missional life, spent in being sent to live and dwell in diaspora, in Babylon not Zion."

The five chapters unpack the missional life (God's going, and calling us to go, or be present as we go), the relational life (and goes beyond typical discussions of the need for community), the incarnational life, and an epilogue that calls us, and calls our church to be MRI - and gives us some ways to know if we are. Another way he pulls these together: "Missional is the mind of God. Mission is where God's head's at. Relational is the heart of God. Relationship is where God's heart is. Incarnational is the hands of God. Incarnation is what God's hands are up to."

The writing style is unique, quite deep and not avoiding large words, and yet remarkably clear and witty. To say it's thought-provoking is an understatement. Sweet combines a theological approach that centers on Christ and the trinity, but is not afraid of describing things in new ways. This is no dry academic treatise... at the risk of offending, Sweet asserts that "The church needs to rediscover the missionary position, a posture that forces us to look at the world eye to eye and face to face without turning our backs. The missionary position tries to get together with the world in a healing and so beautiful way. It doesn't view the world as a market but a mission." If that makes you upset or angry, this book probably isn't for you. But if you like reading about a fresh perspective on missiology for today's culture (as with The Present Future: Six Tough Questions for the Church (J-B Leadership Network Series) or other books by Reggie McNeal), this is definitely one to check out.
