I bought this with a complete set of service for 8. The service for 8 arrived in two boxes, and many of the plates were chipped, and a couple were broken. The return process with Amazon is very customer-friendly. They shipped a replacement immediately. The replacements were intact -- yay. Unfortunately, I did have some problems with the return as well. Read on, gentle review purveyor. I used the online tools to print a set of return labels, but failed to print two copies (since I had to ship back two boxes). Once I realized my error, I returned to the site to print additional labels. According to some text either in an email from Amazon, or on the web site, I could simply return to the site to print any additional labels. But once there, it led me through the full process of entering the order number and such for the labels that I was going to be returning. I had misgivings about doing this (turns out my misgivings were dead-on accurate). So, instead, I contact Amazon customer support by phone. Well, the gentleman was helpful (although a bit difficult to decipher due to his accent) and indicated that he would mail me additional labels. Based on the speed of receiving everything else from Amazon, I figured they'd be there in a couple of days. I never did receive them, but I had the bright idea of using my scanner/printer as a photo-copier. Well duh, I should've done that to start with. Oh well. Once I returned the items, I got an email indicating that Amazon had received my return. I thought that was the end of it. Nope -- I just got an email a few days ago (ok, as of 1/15/2007) that said that since it had been more than 30 days since the replacement item was sent and that they hadn't received the return yet, that they were going to charge my credit card for the $109.99. Yikes! Well, another call to customer service got that refunded. I must say that the young lady I talked to this time around was very helpful and had no communication problems due to foreign accent. I believe that there is a bug in the software that Amazon is using that caused this snafu. It logged duplicate return requests (remember when I called and the rep ordered additional return labels for me?) for the same order number.
But now that everything is taken care of (I should receive the refund in the next couple of days on my credit card), I am still overall pleased with this purchase. Best price in town! And although I don't like having to use customer service, I've found that Amazon's service is pretty good. How can you beat that?) 『The Good The main portion of the DVD is from Skynyrd's appearance at the Loreley Festival in 1996, which was filmed for the German television program Rockpalast. The group's set is flawless as they rifle though some of their best material. The set didn't really get interesting for me until about eight songs in. For the first half Skynyrd focuses on lesser-known material; "I Ain't the One," "Double Trouble," and others. Once the crowd is into it, Skynyrd fires off hit after hit; "What's Your Name," "That Smell," "Simple Man," "Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," and "Free Bird."
The DVDs bonus material is from another performance in Germany. Only this time it features the original Lynyrd Skynyrd back in 1974. This three song performance of "Workin' For the MCA," "Free Bird," and "Sweet Home Alabama" is surprisingly of high quality. It was interesting to go from a hugh arena performance to a small club performance. After watching the '74 show you'll see how easy it was for the band to become as big as they did. As great as Johnny Van Zant is with Skynyrd today, his brother Ronnie was truly a better choice at vocals.
The Bad A longer performance of the '74 show or another show around that time would have been a better contrast to the main show.

(Get it for mainly the bonus footage...) 『The main concert featured on this DVD is pretty good, but some of the performances from some of the band members are a little off. The two main redeeming highlights of the main concert with the more contemporary lineup is them performing "Workin' For MCA" (which they no longer could do once they signed to CMC) and the cool guitar solos performed in series by the three guitarists. The band's performance on the Lyve From Steel Town DVD is flawless, and overall I recommend that one over this one if you don't want to get both. However, I encourage you to get both, because several songs on this DVD do not appear on the Steel Town DVD because the latter was recorded shortly after their awesome "Twenty" album was released, so several of their old numbers were replaced with material from "Twenty."
The best thing about this DVD, of course, is the vintage footage of the old Lynyrd Skynyrd with Ronnie, Ed King, et al performing back in 1974. The sound quality is predicatably bad, but not unbearably horrible like some bootleg VHS recordings you can find on ebay. One cool part of that footage features Ed King doing a nice, melodic solo before the last verse of "Free Bird" that later was always occupied by Billy Powell--interesting--never heard a live version of Free Bird without Billy's solo. The only bad part (and it's just humorous rather than annoying) of this classic footage is Ed King singing harmony on "Sweet Home"--yikes! No wonder they got the Honkettes later on! :)』

This film is entertaining as long as one doesn't expect anything that remotely resembles a plot. An amagamation of subplots serves to fill the void, and the film somehow works. It's exactly as billed in the trailer, sung as a doo-wop tune: "The Lords of Flatbush is a movie / About what life was like back in the fifties".
Well, that lyric says it all.
This film will not cure any ailments, but if you want to know what started the careers of Stallone and Winkler, look no further. It's entertaining, quite well acted, and insightful regarding the lives and outlooks of kids coming of age in the late 1950's.

(Great B-Movie - "Happy Days" It Ain't) 『You can't help but see Fonzie when you see Henry Winkler in this film...but Happy Days it ain't.
Don't get me wrong, it is a great little b-movie (even the soundtrack is low budget with original 1970s songs trying to sound 1950s). But this film is not the innocent 1950s that Happy Days portrays. It is a straight, in-your-face look at the juvenile delinquent life--a day in the life of four guys in a gang called The Lords.
These guys get together with girls, fight, disrupt the classroom, and ultimately realize that they eventually have to grow up (or at least Sylvester Stallone's character Stanley does).
If you want a good juvenile delinquent film with familiar faces and cool nostalgia, then go to Flatbush with The Lords!

Normally I don't like to start in the middle of a series, but I had no trouble with this one. I liked the town, I liked the main character Jeanette, the secondary story about Mary Vaugn was good, the love interest (Tom) was OK, and Jeanette's friends were very well-written. What I didn't like was the hokey stupid over-emphasis on the Christmas festival, the forced angst on the part of Tom about his miserable childhood Christmases, and the way Tom&Jeannette just kind of decided to get married after all even though they still had some major issues over their different approach to their careers and where they would live. The difficulty Jeannette had with Christmas was explained well and brought to a proper end, but Tom's situation was just dumb and his parents were mean one minute, then nice&quirky, then mean again, then cute and quirky. The last part of the book basically set up Tom and Jeannette to eventually get a divorce after having major fight after major fight since he never bothers to consult her on any of his big decisions. I didn't like him very much. I don't think I'd recommend this book, to be honest, when there are so many better ones out there. I can't say it was bad, but I had enough problems with it that it won't be on my forever shelf.』

This is the life of Gesine Bullock-Prado. It doesn't matter who your famous family or friends are, what matters is the sweet luscious scent of chocolate or fresh baked bread. This is what is important in life and if you are taught by your much adored mother- well then- that's all the better.
Bullock-Prado describes her life before owning her own shop and her life after. There is no comparison, when you hate what you are doing, but make a gazillion dollars you still hate what you are doing, but when you are building a business, getting up at 4am and trudging through snow and ice to do it, well, then life is good. So, you don't have a gazillion dollars, but you do have coffee and delicious fresh pastries.
Owning your own business and meeting your new neighbors in a new town 3,000 miles away, well, you just have to see life an adventure. So the building is falling down and has to be rebuilt, the suppliers don't deliver soy on demand and the town has a few odd-balls. That's ok, there are always croissants.
This book is a delicious gastronomic pleasure. But my words of advice - get over the whole name thing. People are going to pronounce it wrong. And not everyone is going to have a subtle sigh when they say it.』
(A wonderful read for anyone who loves baking!) 『I love to bake- and long dreamed of having my own bakery! So this book, which was extremely well written and fun, let me see what it would take to succeed at baking....(and I think I will pass)! I have been dreaming now of moving to a beautiful, small, eclectic town as the author has and doing my own thing- away from anyone's expectations of a proper 'career'.
I particularly enjoyed reading about her childhood in Europe, with an opera star mother. The difference in cultures with Christmas was very interesting to me. However, the best part was reading about all the amazing things that are being baked on a daily basis, and how the author started up her business- first giving things away to friends, then selling over the internet after a mention in a magazine.
The recipes are mixed amid the text, usually after the particular item was discussed in the book. They look really great, and are unusual to boot. I can't wait to make several of them. How this woman managed to give up a Holleywood career to go through all the hurdles to start her own successful business was nothing short of amazing.』
(Fun, fast read. Not a cookbook!) 『I only learned about Gesine when I was doing a search for other almond cookie recipes in preparation of the opening of our bakery in Clearwater. Okay, so having a famous sister was intriguing and got me curious. Her blog, under the same name as the title of the book, was delightful to read. Loved the tongue-in-cheek repartée, such as that of many of the friends I enjoy. I tried the recipe...no luck. Not one to be discouraged, I watched her online vid and tried the Golden Eggs. Those were tasty and I took the majority of them to my doc's office since I had an appointment that day for a flu shot. They LOVED them! Onlycaveat: the little cakes need to be eaten right away since the high content of eggs made them rubbery after about 5 hours, sort of like a cruller. Not my favorite mouth-feel.
But I still wanted to read the book.
Got the book and read it in two evening sittings. It was a lot of fun, had a number of situations to which I could relate (surprisingly), and made me feel happy to have "met" Gesine and the other folks who populate the book. Love Larry.
So I tried four more of the recipes. Hmmm, let me first say that it translates to "blah, blah, blah" when I read someone's review in which they say "I've been baking for umpty ump years, blah blah". Well, I HAVE been baking for going on 40 years, and I had no success with those four or five recipes I attempted. I tried, dear, really tried but they just didn't work...for me. Maybe I did something wrong. The apple pie filling was tasty but didn't have the gloss I get with cornstarch and no cream. The pie dough was a disaster, rubbery and bland. I had to make my regular pie crust (CIA formula 3, 2, 1) the next day just to get back on the horse, so to speak, regain my pie-making dignity.
The Starry Starry Nights were absolutely delicious but SOOO much work, they came out flat, spreading quite a bit, and were so expensive to make (I use Callebaut) that 1.) I felt I could have taken the very loose batter and piped it like French macarons instead of all of that chilling, freezing, and scooping, and 2.) I will most likely work on a chocolate version of my own using less costly amounts of ingredients. Of course, I am opening a bakery in a month and therefore have a specific agenda, not just that of a home cook.
Otherwise, the book is a delightful memoir, whether one comes a from point of view of being a movie-star-fan, or that of a baker. Having lived in LA MANY years ago and leaving for similar reasons, although I never made it to anywhere near Gesine's success or level of accessibility (I hated acting, was tremendously dreadful at it...was just a foolish girl who wanted to be a "Star" without doing the work), it was nice to see that my assessment of the experience wasn't so off the mark. I also have a European mother, still a glamour girl to the hilt at the age of 75, that so many of Gesine's experiences were relatable, as were the European pastries. We used the plums to make dumplings every summer, covered in buttery, toasted breadcrumbs and served with a cinnamon-scented sour cream sauce.
I loved the book, recommend it even. Not sure about the recipes...maybe it's the Florida air...who knows.
Addendum: I just watched Gesine's video (on her blog) showing how Starry Starry Nights are made. Got it. I didn't freeze those balls long enough. THOUGHT I had but probably not. This is the type of poetry William Carlos Williams wrote, and the type that translates beautifully into the mixed media artwork throughout River of Words. I cannot recommend this book enough. The art acts as a parallel story to the narrative about "Willy." The pictures sometimes do not describe the words of the story, but always perfectly describe the poetry that WCW was writing. I personally believe that the only thing that kept this book from getting the Caldecott was its age focus. This isn't the type of book that say a six year old could pick up and read without any help. The words of the story are simple enough, but for a child, it would be hard to tell what is the story and what is not. Start a love of poetry young in children! The whistle is great, so is the hat and bandana, but the toy radio with the train sound is so low you can barely hear it, although that did not bother my son one bit. I penciled a little mustache and beard on him too. He loved how he looked so much that I had to drag him away from the mirror. All in all it was a great purchase. My little guy wore proudly all day on Halloween...and a for few days after too!』
