(Terrific ragtime!!!) 『Performing Ragtime Music while touring the world with Gunther Schuller and the New England Ragtime Ensemble for 25 years, I never tired of this happy, toe-tapping music. Discovering this gem of recorded samples of Joplin, Morton, Johnson and Blake brings back many memories of performing this music for 25 years with the New England Ragtime Ensemble. We even got to meet Eubie Blake in Joplin, Missouri at their Ragtime Festival in the early 70's. Sweet guy with enormous hands. The tempi are a little fast, but that's due to the technology of the time, ie. piano rolls. There was only a set amount of time to record their music. Joshua Rifkins tempi are good but still a tad faster than what we as a group performed their works. One must admire how flawless the playing is. There was no stopping and going back to correct mistakes like today with digital. And the artists are still phenomenal in spite of having a time constraint. Listening to the cd on headphones, one can even hear the actual piano action while the piano is playing. IMPRESSIVE!!!

It's sad. Given the reception of "Let it Snow," it's puzzling why they even released it, rather than re-release "Our Heart's Joy." In other words, by this CD if you can get ahold of it; it's a recording of fantastic, deeply spiritual music that shows Chanticleer at its best. From the first track to the last, "Our Heart's Joy" gives you sublime Christmas music to enjoy this holiday season. My personal favorites are "Riu Riu Chiu," a rollicking Spanish carol, and Franz Biebel's august "Ave Maria." On a personal note, I had the opportunity to sing both of these songs in high school, and felt it an honor to sing the songs that I had heard Chanticleer perform so beautifully. So if you're looking for beautiful music, exquisitely performed, buy "Our Heart's Joy." You won't be disappointed.』

The sound is sonorous, fluid, and radiant, and communicates a deep sense of spiritual fulfilment. (One of the most soothing compilations of music I own) 『I first owned a tape of this in 1993, and went out of my way to purchase the CD last summer. I never get tired of this CD. Of course, there is nothing more healing than the Biebl Ave Maria, which grows more and more beautiful everytime I listen to it. Chanticleer introduced this beautiful piece to me, I've had the good fortune of having it sung at my wedding, and being able to sing it last year in the Cathedrals, Abbeys and Basilicas of France! The rest of the CD is just as superb, and yes, those really are men singing those most amazing Soprano sections in Go Tell It On the Mountain. Other favorites are the Mouton that opens the CD, There Is No Rose, and O Come Emmanuel. A wonderful addition to anyone's Christmas CD collection, and one that you can play year round!』

It's been remastered to its original, uncut version of 106 minutes and has a widescreen presentation that appears more like 2.35:1 in lieu of the 1.85:1 stated on the jacket. The film has numerous green vertical lines in the beginning but disappear altogether as the story progresses. There is full-length commentary from director Alfred Sole and editor Edward Salier. There are no closed captions. The Henstooth edition may prove a better purchase.
Alice Spages (Paula Sheppard) is anything but sweet. In fact, she is a biter, angry mentally unhinged twelve-year-old from a dysfunctional family. She harasses her pretty, young sister Karen (Brooke Shields), plays cruel jokes on her obese, obnoxious landlord Alphonso (Alphonso DeNoble), and disobeys her gorgeous mom Catherine (Linda Miller). When Karen is murdered at her first Catholic communion, it is no wonder Alice is the prime suspect. Soon, other members of her family are attacked by someone wearing a kewpie doll mask and a yellow slicker - exactly like the ones Alice owns.
Expertly directed by Alfred Sole, "Alice, Sweet Alice" is homage to Nicolas Roeg's supernatural horror slasher "Don't Look Now." Both involve killers wearing yellow slickers. "Alice, Sweet Alice" (originally, and more appropriately titled "Communion") works well as both a mystery and a slasher. In fact it is in the same bloody vein as the Italian gialli (murder mysteries) that were highly popular in the late sixties to early seventies.
Paula Sheppard's performance as Alice is superb. Hard to believe she was actually nineteen. He childlike pouting and temper tantrums were extremely convincing. I wanted to slap her silly myself. She needed some tough love in a padded cell.
More popular today than it was when originally released, "Alice, Sweet Alice" is highly recommended for fans of psychological slasher horror, especially with ones that have religious overtones. The ending is gruesome and disturbing; it is not easily forgotten. 』

(a true classic of suspense) 『The first time I saw *Alice, Sweet Alice* was when I was flipping through the TV channels, looking for something good to watch. There's something about this movie because, since the first time I saw it, I've watched it repeatedly. I consider this film a classic because it is still suspenseful after all these years.
After her sister, Karen, is murdered, suspicion falls on Alice, who is just simply a bratty, spoiled child! After all, once you see the yellow raincoat and the mask, you'll assume it's has to be Alice who is the culprit. However, about halfway, you start to have doubts and that is what makes the film worthwhile to watch. And like *Sixth Sense*, you have to watch it again to see if you missed the clues.
*Alice, Sweet Alice* is symbols galore, heavily involving the Catholic church. You just have to watch it again to appreciate all the hidden messages. Thus, this film is a great conversational piece.
After 30 years, this film can still make you bite your nails. Now, I call that a classic!』

Though his plot to assasinate Hitler failed, he did manage to save the lives of many Jews. He was one of the last people to be executed by the Nazi government near the end of the war.
Of course, this man was a true hero who deserves to be remembered, and he should be better known. The acting is superb. James WIlby's performance as Von Moltke is outstanding. The sets and the costumes really have an authentic 1940s European feel. However, in truth the movie is not as compeling and moving as it should have been. I'm glad I watched it once, but am not tempted to see it again.』

At the time I remember it being a minor hit and seeing it in the movie theatre with a group of friends. Between the social commentary (that is still relevant today) we laughed our heads off.
His main character is a hard working but down on his luck picker who ends up on the wrong side of the bosses running the produce conclomerate when he accidentally ends up connected to a Cesar Chevez-esque labor mvoement leader.
Exiled to LA his labor and lady problems appear to get better but unravel in the end with both comedic and sober results. He also plays the philandering preacher and his own grandfather, both of which are amazing and hilarious to watch.
This movie will show you why Richard was so great and why performers like Robin Willaims, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall call him the "King" and pay hommage to him in their own movies.

You'll find yourself spending most of your time trying to figure out just what in the hell this movie is about. This may have been one of the first "Black Power" movies from the 70's and it's also the worst.
Sweetback pretty much runs through the entire movie, and when he is not running, he is having sex. It only breaks from that cycle to show him beating up a cop or few. The weird thing about this film is that the "Sex" has nothing to do with anything! It's mostly just out of context the entire film. This movie really has no plot. It's actually just Melvin Van Peebles running from the city to the desert.
Watching this movie is like getting high. It's confusing, it makes no sense, and it's just strange as hell. "You bled my mamma, You bled my pappa, but you won't bleed me" get used to that phrase, because that's all you'll ever hear in the back tracking music this entire film. Interestingly enough Earthwind and Fire provided the music for this film, this being one of their earliest gigs. That's probably the only signifigant thing in this film worth taking note of.
I can't even think of a single solitary reason why this is worth watching today. It cetainly is not worth owning. I'm suprised this even made it from VHS to DVD. I mean I don't mind the badly recorded audio or visuals of this film, I expect that. There's plenty of low budget films that look horrible; however, a good low budget film makes up for that with an outstanding storyline. This waste of footage has neither.
I don't care if this is supposed to be a great "Black" accomplishment, this is trash! This is more of a great "Black" embarassment. If your looking for a 70's Black Power flick with a message I highly recommend "Watermelon Man." Now that's a great film.
The only thing this films stands as today is a reminder, that even people with absolutely no talent can produce something that generates them money.』

(Fantastic toy, but needs different packaging) 『Pattern blocks are wonderful manipulatives for preschool- and kindergarden-aged children. They help to develop fine motor skills and mathematical thinking. This set is wonderful in that the magnetic backing on the blocks helps them to stay put, so a child's creations are not so easily skewed by a random bump. The tray which holds the pattern templates seems sturdy and easy to use. Both my two-year-old and five-year-old have a great time playing with this set.
My one complaint about this particular set is the packaging. The plastic carrying case out-gasses horribly for the first several days, and as it airs out, it really stinks! I would highly recommend putting it outside or in the garage while it out-gasses. I'm not sure what kind of plastic this is, but I wish that Melissa and Doug selected a more earth- and child-friendly alternative to use as a travel case. This one issue is enough for me to give this product just 4 stars. Otherwise, I'd give it 5 stars for being a great, open-ended and educational toy.』

And for the most part I still agree with what the other commentators wrote but unfortunately over time I found some mistakes here and there, some smaller, some larger, that disappoint me. How does the weight for the "pate sablee" add up to 650 gr? I mixed it, weighed it and it weighed 580 gr, which is in perfect accordance to the total weight of all the ingredients when you add them up on paper. The biggest disappointment is the orange cheesecake that looked so incredibly enticing in the photo and is, according to M. Roux, the best cheesecake he'd ever tasted: the amounts given for the filling don't add up - I ended up with so much filling that I could actually fill two molds. Moreover, the juice of four oranges equals a whole cup of juice, which is far too much for a cheesecake, and in the end the product tasted plain awful. That said, most other recipes I tried have been delicious, the strawberry tart, apple tart, puff pastry, choux pastry. I would still highly recommend it to anyone as it's a wonderful book to learn from but unfortunately, it's not the flawless book that Michel Roux claims it is...』

(QUALITY WORTHY OF A MASTER) 『Yet another excellent book by the never aging master. PASTRY is all one would expect from a pastry chef of Michel Roux's calibre. High quality paper and photos, excellent recipes, imaginative combinations, modern decorations and clear instructions. There are photos of all basic procedures and of most of the products. The European edition that I have has Metric measurements and the American edition has both volume (cups and spoons) and Metric.
The book is divided by sections according to the pastry used in each preparation. It starts with a 'pastry techniques' section and the chapters are: Shortcrust pastries Enriched sweet pastries (pate sucree, pate sablee) Puff pastry Raised pie pastry Brioche dough Croissant dough Choux pastry Pizza dough Filo pastry Every chapter starts with the method of preparing the starring pastry and goes on with the assembled products. I have to note here that rarely can one find in books instructions(especially with photos) on how to make filo by hand.
The shortcrust/flan pastry section starts with savory products before moving on to sweet preparations. The selection of recipes is delectable and my personal favorites are: Asparagus and red pepper flan, semi confit cherry tomato tart, croustade of seasonal vegetables, lightly curried seafood flan and the cherry clafoutis. In this section you get also filled pastries like cornish pastries and beef and cheese empanadas.
The enriched sweet pastries chapter has an excellent recipe for sablee pastry and biscuits with a buttery, melt in the mouth quality.In this section is Mr Roux's Lemon tart (baked), that has been my favourite ever since I first made and tasted it as a student in Pastry school in the early nineties. Also present is the famous Chocolate and Raspberry tart, a heavenly combination that has to be tasted to be believed. The Cheesecake and the Sables with blueberry mousse also stand out.
The Puff pastry section like the Shortcrust one has many savory recipes from which I single out the Herbed monkfish in puff crust, rhe Sole and wild mushroom bouches, Chicken pies and the Beef and ale pies. From the sweet ones I like the classics, Pithiviers and tart Tatin.
I have no favorite recipes from the raised pie section.I like them all! All preparations are meals unto themselves, keep for long periods if refrigerated and take kindly to transportation, so they are ideal for picnics. Forget Spam and corned beef for a while and try making your own Pork pies and Chicken with chicken liver pate.
The Brioche section includes plain and filled brioche dough with both savory and sweet preparations. I like the fillet of beef in a pastry crust, the Brioches polonaises and the Baba au Rhum.
Michel Roux's croissant recipe is very delicate so when preparing it make sure that your room temperature and your workbench are cool. The preparations are the classics so try your hand at your own homemade pain au chocolat and danish pastries.
The Choux pastry chapter has a variety of classic and modern products. I like the roasted peaches on choux crowns and the mushroom filled gougeres.
The pizza section has some classics including pizza margherita and Calzone. This is not really the definitive book on pizzas but the selection is good.
Finally, the filo section includes the refreshing Filo croustades with figs, almonds and fromage blanc, apple strudel, baklava and the vegetable and goat cheese flan.
The final chapter has the basics like syrups and custards.
Michel Roux's book lives up to its title and the fame of its author. It is better than Catherine Atkinson's book with the same title and Eric Kaizer's book on tarts that deals more or less with the same subject. And at this low price this hardcover book is a bargain. 』 『

I eat only low glycemic fruits an vegetables and lean meats. I eat yogurt sweetened with fruit for desserts and snacks.
In 6 weeks I've lost 18 pounds and I feel so much better! I do realize that some of that weight is fluid but at least I'm not carrying it around anymore. I've dropped a pants size already and I can breathe well again! I haven't yet repeated my blood work but I have a feeling that it is already much improved.
A huge surprise was the elimination of the headaches and body aches. I "feel" good all over. I'm not dead tired at the end of the day and my mental and emotional outlooks are so much better.

Like many other who've written, I was a true sugar addict. I hoarded sweets: twizzlers, cookies, donuts, granola bars, cereal bars, sugary cereals. I ate it all. I was so addicted to it. I had no idea that this sugar was linked to my freqent bouts of irritability, negativity, and brain fog. This is the danger of refined sugar. Refined sugar, having no fiber or protein, goes straight to your blood stream and spikes it. Your brain, getting its form of energy from glucose in your blood, now is disrupted from doing so caused by the spike in the blood stream. Insulin then has to be released to lower the blood sugar level, and many times it becomes too low. So your brain can't function properly with the low sugar. The result-- panic, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, frustration, anger. It can make you go crazy. This is the effects of eating refined sugar.
Before I read this book, I would have never linked to it to refined sugar, but now I know that that along with wheat, pretty much white flour, stripped of all the fiber, is the cause for all these blood-sugar disruptions.
Ever since I got rid of the sugary foods and floury foods, the brain fog, the irritability, the negativity, has all gone. It's all over. For me, it lasted like three years. Now today, I'm pretty much done with refined sugar, no more soda, no more twizzlers (and I was addicted to twizzlers), no more fruit juice, jelly and all the sugary stuff. And the other bad part about refined sugar is it is so addictive. Any time I ate cookies, I had at least 8 with many times going to 15-20 cookies at one sitting. Sometimes I would just finish the whole pack at one sitting. Twizzlers, 20-25 twizzlers at once. Same with cereal, the whole box at once. Refined is so addictive.
I thank Connie Bennett so much for writing this book. This has helped me profusely. The days of irritability are over. Does this mean I don't eat sugar anymore? Of course not. Now I eat sugar in its natural form. Fruit is sweet and being that its loaded with fiber, it doesn't cause blood sugar fluctuations, assuming you eat one at a time, which is the rule for fruit eating. I eat dried fruit, which tastes just like candy, without the bad side effects. Dates, dried strawberries and other fruits are all great alternatives.
My advice to you all: eat natural sugar, what God provides, fruits and dried fruits and raw honey, stevia leaves, or dates to sweeten foods. It's when we eat the unnatural foods, stripped, processed, heated, that consequences result.
