Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (No Need to Duck This Treat) 『In the four ounce package are fourteen wraps, chunks of dried sweet potato wrapped in what looks like duck jerky. Inside the package is a small package of moisture absorber, a desiccant, not the kind of addition one normally finds in a food product, pet food or otherwise. The wraps aren't visually appealing to a human, but dogs will only be concerned with the scent and the taste. On the top of the pouch is a tear off strip to open it. A resealable plastic zipper seals the pouch tightly to keep the wraps fresh.
Our three girls wear their emotions on their paws and their faces. Thus when each was presented with a duck sweet potato wrap their interest and their excitement were unmistakable. There were no sniffy-sniffy hesitations, no circle walkings, no signs of disinterest and definitely no looks of can't youdobetterthan this. Evie immediately grabbed her wrap between her jaws and began chewing, oblivious to the world. Piper and Bella, the two shih tzus, grabbed their wraps eagerly and slunk off to their respective corners for some private feasting. Piper in particular had a primal transformation, guarding her prize with laid-back ears and a low, stay away growl, hovering over her wrap like a miniature wolf guarding its kill. All three dogs were in a state of ravenous "wrapture" with their treats.
I like that these wraps are too chewy for the dogs to finish off quickly, though Evie the vac nonterrier finished hers in half the time as her two little sisters. The duck jerky was eaten first, followed by the sweet potato piece with no lessening of interest or enjoyment. Of all the many treats and chews offered to this canine triumvirate, few have elicited such intense enthusiasm and prehistoric passion.

(Not My Style) 『If you like Big Band or traditional classical music leave this one alone. Benny Goodman is brilliant in his playing, but the subject is completely undecipherable to my ears. To me, this music is only fit for mathematicians who like patterns rather than "music". Very unnerving.』
(Great Introduction to 20th Century Music) 『This CD is a great introduction to 20th Century Classical music. Though it features the artistry of Benny Goodman, don't expect to hear him wail like he did with Lionel Hampton and Gene Krupa playing "Four Once More". No, this CD reflects Goodman's talent as a classical musician. For even though some of these pieces are jazz-inspired, they are all written by classical composers in a classical format. It's a different side of Benny Goodman that is a testimony to the notion that the "King of Swing" could have had just as lucrative a carer as a clarinet virtuoso in the classical style and could have moved on to being a great American composer and/or conductor for symphony orchestras. Probably, there was a lot more money to made, and a better chance of becoming famous, in the world of jazz.
In any case this CD features four 20th century classical works for clarinet, and orchestra and one 20th century chamber work. Each piece also features the composer as conductor, except for the chamber work which features the Bela Bartok on piano. Indeed, it is an all-star summit meeting of some the greatest 20th composers, namely Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Morton Gould, and Bela Bartok.
The Bernstein, Stravinsky and Gould pieces are the ones which are jazz-inspired, albeit they are really not jazz any more than the folk-inspired symphonic music of Dvorak is authentic Czech folk music as played by a band of Czech street musicians. As Dvorak did with folk music, Bernstein, Stravinsky and Gould take jazz rhythms and other characteristics of jazz and replicate that feeling within a classical framework.
Bernstein's "Fugue and Riffs", however, sustains a certain aura of jazz authenticy. For even though Bernstein was a classical composer and conductor, his occaisional crossovers into Broadway and his New Yorker status make for something of a modified reworking of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; you can feel in "Fugue and Riffs" the sights, sounds and smells of the busy New York City traffic. It's quite nice.
Stravinsky's "Ebony Concerto" is probably the most masterful piece in this whole collection. I am not a huge enthusiast of Stravinsky, but I admire this concerto as it weds beautifully the classical European concerto form with the jazz style. Even though Stravinsky is difficult and cerebral, you know that when you hear his music and witness his perfect craftsmanship, that you are in the presence of greatness.
The music by Morton Gould is the weakest of the jazz-inspired pieces here, as it sounds the most contrived; however, it is still good enough to have some fun with.
The Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra by Aaron Copland is an outstanding work that reflects Copland's tender and elegant side (not like his "rootin-tootin" "Rodeo" or "Billy the Kid" Suites). The Clarinet Concerto is rather a more quiet piece of work (Like parts of "Appalacian Spring"). The concerto is subtle and gentle in it's beauty and it is lightly tinged by just a hint of South American influence. It is another masterful work by an 20th Century master.
The final piece is Bartok's Trio for Violin, Piano and Clarinet. It features Goodman, Joseph Szigeti, and the composer on the piano. It has Bartok's characteristic Hungarian flavor cloaked in a mysterious and ultra-modern tapestry. It's also quite nice.
If you are a fan of classical music, but have yet to venture into the seemingly harsh world of twentieth century music, this makes for an excellent sampler. Benny Goodman plays in a full bright, expressive and masterful tone. If you are used to classical music of the more popular variety (Beethoven, Tchaikovsky etc.), this CD may be challenging at first; but given an even chance you may like it. I first bought these recordings on vynal years ago. It was one of my first introductions to 20th century or "Modern" classical music. I am glad to have upgraded to conveniant CD form.』

(Great album) 『I was a kid when grunge became popular and didn't listen to much music. It wasn't until Marilyn Manson became big with "The Beautiful People" when I was twelve that I liked that kind of music. Sure enough I would eventualy find grunge and start listening to bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. For years I listened to this unaware of the greatness that was right under my nose. When I discovered Screaming Trees it was refreshing to hear something new but still great. During a time when Nirvana hit it big following the footsteps of great bands like Soundgarden and Screaming Trees people were looking for more energy and angst. Screaming Trees were on the other hand more mellow and focused more on song writing. Their music went over many peoples heads who were looking for dirty whiners because the media told them it was "cool". Not to get me wrong Nirvana made some good music but were very overated, and not to mention overplayed even to this day. This is why I can't listen to them anymore. Anyone who's sick to death of hearing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" check out Sweet Oblivion for a change of pace. Every track is filled with great song writing backed up by the second best grunge vocalist of all time.』

It was a great film of a great Broadway hit. Why make it again many may wonder? How could you top that gem in the MGM lexicon of late 50's Tennessee Williams filmed versions of his master works.
Cut to the 1980's and Elizabeth Taylor who in many ways at the time was not so big a movie star as she had been but was much in demand on television. Slimmed down and revitalized after the 1970's age of fat she was in her final bloom of beauty and at the top of her talent. A woman playing a star who really understood more than anyone alive what being a star of mega wattage meant. She had lived it, survived it and was triumphing over it. She was the anti Alexandra Delago who nearly had become Alexandra Delago but somehow managed to swerve and avoid that porcupine in the road of fame and live to tell about it. She was perfect casting for this T.V. movie of the play. And she had an understanding of Williams' poetry having done, "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "Suddenly Last Summer" and "Boom".
The supporting cast turns in some fine performances. In particular, Rip Torn, and Valerie Perrine shine in their roles. Mark Harman is just the right age to play Chance Wayne a gigolo on the edge of losing his looks and too obsessed with the past to take the one last opportunity Alexandra offers him to become what he thinks he wants to be, a star.
But it is Taylor's movie all the way. From her incredible early close-ups at the beach cabana to her final scene she commands the role as no other actress of her generation could. She inhabits the roll with a worldly understanding that under the monster that Alexandra has become there is still a human being who can reach out to help another even if it is too little too late. She also brings to the film a reality from her real life that no other actress, even the best method actresses around could muster. This adds a glittering and chilling edge to the performance. It is brilliant work in a lesser medium by a star and actress who was the master of blending fact and fiction as no one else quite can. 』

(A Cult Film composed of sub-plots) 『First of all, Stallone and Winkler both give solid performances as street hoodlums on the verge of manhood. Perry King and Paul Mace are good as well, making this cast quite first-rate.
This film is entertaining as long as one doesn't expect anything that remotely resembles a plot. An amagamation of subplots serves to fill the void, and the film somehow works. It's exactly as billed in the trailer, sung as a doo-wop tune: "The Lords of Flatbush is a movie / About what life was like back in the fifties".
Well, that lyric says it all.
This film will not cure any ailments, but if you want to know what started the careers of Stallone and Winkler, look no further. It's entertaining, quite well acted, and insightful regarding the lives and outlooks of kids coming of age in the late 1950's.

Don't get me wrong, it is a great little b-movie (even the soundtrack is low budget with original 1970s songs trying to sound 1950s). But this film is not the innocent 1950s that Happy Days portrays. It is a straight, in-your-face look at the juvenile delinquent life--a day in the life of four guys in a gang called The Lords.
These guys get together with girls, fight, disrupt the classroom, and ultimately realize that they eventually have to grow up (or at least Sylvester Stallone's character Stanley does).
If you want a good juvenile delinquent film with familiar faces and cool nostalgia, then go to Flatbush with The Lords!

NBC had many quality sitcoms on the air in the 80s, such as Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts Of Life, Silver Spoons, etc. Gimme A Break, was certainly in the same league as any of NBC's other popular comedy shows. It was warm, funny, and presented many contemporary topics that modern families struggle with, such as teen sex, drugs, alcoholism, dating, etc.
Nell Carter played the main character, Nell Harper. On the show, Nell often got to display her considerable singing and dancing talents. This made the show quite entertaining overall. And Nell held this show together, with her no nonsense brand of comic delivery. She had a feisty charm, that made her shine above the rest of the cast. Her co-star Dolph Sweet (who played the family patriarch, Carl Kominski), was lackluster by comparison. (Loved this series then and I still do.) 『I recently purchased this dvd set and watched the whole thing in one night. I had forgotten how funny this show was. It is definitely very 80's. It's funny that some of the issues that they dealt with on this show were considered to be somewhat explicit at the time but not so much anymore. I also found it to be very interesting that Nell's character believed that she was an attractive, sexy woman even though she was not a size 2. (As a woman who is also not a size 2, I found it refreshing because you don't see much of that on tv these days.) Nell didn't let her size or race get to her because she believed in herself. There are some very, very funny moments and some very tender moments (specifically in the episode "Mom's Birthday".) I laughed so hard I cried and then I cried so hard that I had to laugh at myself. Anyway, the first season is great and I'd recommend it to fans of the 80's and anyone who likes to laugh.』

This particular double-feature DVD has a strong emphasis on sexploitation starlet Marsha Jordan as she stars in the main billing as well as being featured in two bonus shorts. Additionally, all the theatrical trailers feature movies of Marsha Jordan.
The first bonus short is called Marsha Jordan's Swingers' Party! For most of the short Ms Jordan and company are having a good time staring at a stripper doing her routine in the middle of the living room. Then they join the action. The second short is called Candid Nudistviews No. 3. The whole short consist of Marsha doing some window shopping then going back to her pool and stripping naked.
The six Marsha Jordan trailers are College Girls, The Daisy Chain, The Divorcee, Dr. Cartairs' 1869 Love-Root Elixir, Lady Godiva Rides, Marsha the Erotic Housewife, and Office Love-in! I've seen half of these movies. Not sure if the others have ever been released on DVD. The other specials are the same Harry Novak Exploitation Art/Photos that is on all the Novak SWV DVD's.
The thing I find funny about Harry Novak flicks is that they usually feature some type of farm[er] or cowboy type theme. And most of the scenes seem to be filmed from the same hill/desert/farm location somewhere in the San Fernando Valley area. The other common thread is plenty of naked chicks and these two flicks offer plenty.
Sweet Georgia stars Marsha Jordan and features a naked girl riding a horse in the opening scene along with Marsha getting arosed. The rest of the movie features more naked horse riding and Marsha getting arosed. Country Hooker stars Rene Bond along with supporting appearances by Maria Arnold, another frequent exploitation actress of the 70's. Rene Bond&a gal friend begin the scene by hitchhiking. They then hitchike into one steamy scene after another.
This Something Weird Video release of Harry Novak flicks follows along the same lines of offering pointless stories along with a plethora of naked chicks engaged in soft-core action. Fans of Marsha Jordan or Rene Bond are definitely in for a treat. Not a bad choice if you enjoy SWV DVD's and can pick it up at a cheap price. 』

In another review in this space I have called her the `country torch singer' par excellence. And she does not fail here. At least musically. However, cinematically is another question. While it was interesting (and a little disconcerting) to see the old black and white television clips I do not believe that this compilation does justice to her work. Patsy, like many another torch singer like Bessie Smith or Billie Holliday, needs to grow on you. The best way to do that is grab a Greatest Hits album and sit back. (Not What It Used To Be. No Longer Made in Bermuda, But in the USA) 『Last week I bought a bottle of "Royall Bay Rhum" from my normal supplier. I don't go through a bottle but every few years. Evidently, it has been near six years since my last purchase, because the Bermuda people sold out to a USA concern six years ago, and now the marque is formulated in the USA.
This recent bottle is H2O and alcohol with a fraction of the oils of the Bermuda product. I had an e-mail conversation about my and my wife's impressions. The Bermuda Royall contact stated that the ingredients are the same, but the US Customs somehow regulates how much of the key oils can be used in the US product.
My wife used to love this. She noticed immediately that the new bottle has only a little of the impact of the fragrance and no depth. I have a bit of the old product, and she can tell the difference right away.
So, about $38 for a 4 oz. bottle for nothing.
I recommend not buying this product. You will find it now unsatisfying compared to what you bought several years ago.
Now I need to try to find another Bay Rum(Rhum) product that is satisfying to my wife and me.』
(Not quite as good as I recall.) 『I first tried Royall Bay Rhum about 40 years ago when I bought a bottle in the USVI. I really enjoyed its understated scent which I guess one could call "manly".
Perhaps it's just my memory, but I seem to recall the scent being quite a bit stronger and certainly a lot longer lasting. I still like the scent but find myself using it a lot more liberally than I do most colognes. By the way, I consider this to be more of an after shave than a cologne.
While it's not the most expensive cologne/after shave I've ever used, I think that it's expensive enough that it should be longer lasting or at least a lot stronger. As it is, I think that it's been cut with a lot of alcohol to stretch the more expensive ingredients. To put it bluntly, I find this product overpriced.
I'll probably use Bay Rhum again but it will not be Royall.』

As she prepares to marry, she finds her skeletons won't stay in their closet. Her mother returns to her life and brings a trail of painful memories with her. Jade finds herself struggling to keep her damaging history from ruining her future.
Jade, her fiancé Max, her mother Beryl and her sister Willow are all complex characters. Jade refuses to face the mistakes she's made and focuses on her mother's hippie lifestyle and her parent's divorce. Max seemed dualistic, holding Jade to a higher standard that he was not willing to live by himself. Willow'ssassiness perfectly fits a young woman with her background. Unfortunately, none of the characters seem to flow together. Their stories are intertwined but they lack a level of cohesiveness that creates good tension.
The lack of tension continued with Jade's parent's divorce. I found myself wondering why their marriage actually ended. It didn't seem realistic since their relationship seemed so idyllic. Along with that lack of tension, the novel read like a women's ministry manual. Strained family relationships, abortion, illness and unforgiveness all find their way into the story in a very predictable way. At times, the story became very cliché along with a slow pace.
Also, the story's climax and resolution left me wondering what the climax and resolution was. Jade has an ambiguous encounter with God, but it's not clear what exactly happened. It was also hard to get into the moment of the encounter because it had supernatural overtones. The moment ended up being very "God in the Machine", a tidy but annoying way to show character change.
Two things about this book left me confused. The first thing was the prologue. I'm not sure why it was included in the book. It does give some background setting, but very little. The second thing is the title. I'm not really sure what the title actually has to do with the book. I thought maybe it wasn't that important since it's in smaller print that Sara Evans name (if one wasn't paying attention, she might think the book was called Sara Evans).
Having said all that, I will say that the writing was above average. Evans and Hauck add many stunning lines of imagery to the novel. The chapters were short, which helped the fact that the pacing was so slow at some points. Evans and Hauck also applied a normally annoying flashback technique, (one chapter present, next chapter past) in a good way. The flashbacks seem seamless, which it great because this technique is normally jarring. 』
(The Sweet By and By) 『Jade Fitzgerald is getting married!! After years of turning herself off to love, she has finally found someone who will love her without questioning her past. They agreed that everything that happened before they met was in the past and didn't need to be brought up or discussed, and Jade was all too happy with the situation. But then she mailed the invitations to her wedding, including one to her mother, Beryl Hill. Things start changing when Beryl and Jade's sister, Willow, show up 3 weeks before the wedding. Jade's past has been haunting her for years causing panic attacks, but now that past is coming out in the open, making her realize that she isn't going to be able to marry Max without first dealing with her past. But telling Max one part of the story leads to another part that she wants to keep buried...will she be able to keep it to herself? Can Max forgive her if she doesn't feel God can forgive her? Can Jade forgive her Beryl for leaving her when she needed her mother the most? Then suddenly, a really bad day turns into the turning point of Jade's life...she finds healing and forgiveness in a remote little town.
First-time author, Sara Evans, jumps in with both feet in her debut novel. Some first-time authors will start off with a safe topic and keep it all "happy," but not Sara! She takes something that can destroy a person and turns it into a story of healing and forgiveness and love. True love...the kind we read about in 1 Corinthians 13. Rachel Hauck (Georgia on Her Mind, Sweet Caroline, and Love Starts with Elle) co-authors this with Sara and together they do a fantastic job.
At first I was having trouble getting into this novel...it seemed a bit slow getting started. However, about half-way through it just grabs you and won't let go! From that point forward I couldn't wait to turn the next page and see what was said, what was done, and what surprise was held for me in the next chapter. This novel shows how, with God's love, we can overcome any obstacle and be able to start fresh again. 』
(Good book, a little wordy at times) 『This was a good read, although it read a little more like teen romance than anything else. It was also marketed as a Christian book, and I don't see many religious overtones in it. I actually prefer that, but I think marketing the book as Christian fiction has backfired from the looks of some of the other reviews.
The story is basically a young romance where the main character has a bad childhood that she is trying to forget. I don't like writing "spolier reviews" so we can just leave it at that.
The book was overall a good read and well written. It's definately Chick-lit.』
(The Sweet By and By doesn't disappoint) 『The Sweet By and By greatly exceeded my expectations. This is not just a happy, standard Christian Fiction novel. It is happy and it is Christian Fiction, but it's far more than that stereotype. The characters deal with real pain, real hurt, and the consequences of their past actions.
I loved the Iowa (and Southern) settings. The book had a couple surprises, which I also loved. The further into this book I read, the more I loved it.
While it's not a stupendous, earth-shattering read, this book does gently nudge its characters (and its readers) in the direction of truth. A very quick read; the story pulled me in immediately. I have no complaints about this book -- I really enjoyed reading this one.
I definitely want to read more of Hauck's books (this was the first one I've read).

(Some issues with book) 『Pondering on whether to return book or not. Purchased for Cambodian recipes, having a hard time finding a Cambodian cookbook, this was the best bet = and it does have dishes for things we ate like Khmer soup, pumpkin curry and a similar version to Amok. (oddly i have the amok recipe in my New York Cookbook, a favorite standby)
But as an avid photographer and traveler and cookbook collector, i have to say the travel writing is amateurish, the photos are not great (a mini picture of Angkor wat and i don't think i saw many pictures of places i'd been to in thailand or vietnam - just street scenes - what kind of travelogue is this?) and never seem to match the right page (you would think there would be a photo of what you are reading about next to it) and the pictures of dishes are far and few between. For the huge irregular book format of the book there are not that many recipes. Compare for example "the Cook's Book" for the same heft has 685 recipes.. Compare with Nobu Now for the difference in food photography capability..

(Very Good Coffee Table Book. Good recipes, but expensive) 『`Hot Sour Salty Sweet' by husband and wife team, Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid is a troublesome book to evaluate. Its biggest problem is its relatively high list price ($45) for no more than average culinary content. Much of that inflated price is based on its oversized heft and the fact that it mixes cooking content with comments on culinary regionalism and pure travelogue in text and pictures.
I confess that this is a very attractive book, very similar in appearance to their later volume, `Home Baking' that I enjoyed and very favorably reviewed. And, since the authors have just come out with a new book with similar heft, price, and subject, I figured it was time to attend to reviewing this volume.
Aside from the price, I have one major problem with this book. While its focus is the culinary world of Southeast Asia, the text is far more anecdotal and personal than it is analytical. After reviewing many excellent books on the regional cooking of France, Italy, and other parts of the Mediterranean, I really find this book very thin on substance. Part of the problem for me may be that it tries to cover far too great an area. In 324 pages of material, they cover Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Yunnan Province of China. Thailand alone has required a 675 page book (`Thai Food') from David Thompson. And, on the ingredients of Asia, you can get a far more comprehensive coverage in Bruce Cost's classic `Asian Ingredients'.
In contrast, the books on Italy's regions all include great insights on the origins of culinary mores in these relatively small venues. And, while Arthur Schwartz' book on Naples may include 50 detailed recipes for pasta in Campania, this book gives but 10 for a much larger region. On the other hand, I give the authors extra credit for providing a recipe for fresh, homemade rice noodles. You may have a bit of a problem wrangling this big book around your kitchen and making a decent photocopy of the oversized page, but it is still a good recipe.
If you have no interest whatsoever in acquiring any OTHER books on Southeast Asian cuisine and you have the budget for it, this is a very nice book. I just think that if you are serious about learning about food, you look for books with greater depth and less fluff.
I find it very interesting that none of the blurbs on the back of the book refer to this volume and none are from culinary notables. All refer to the authors' earlier book on flatbreads and most come from general publications such as `The New York Times' and `The Globe and Mail'.
I can really appreciate all the nice things other reviewers have said about this book, as I was impressed with it when I first looked at it 300 cookbook recipes ago. Since then, I find it just a bit too light for the price.

The recipe appeared in a magazine a few years ago and I've been making it every since. For some reason I decided to see where the original recipe came from and that brought me here to buy the book. I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. This isn't just a cook book, but almost like part family history as well. I'm very eager to try the recipe's in the book...especially the Dr. Pepper cake (I've never heard of) and of course the sweet potato pie (I've always bought frozen and passed it off as my own). There's other recipes that I've heard of, but never knew what they were (egg pie). This book is a good addition to your library. While I haven't made all of the recipes in the book, I can attest that the peach cobbler recipe is perfect. Some recipes require you to add a little extra sugar, butter, etc. This recipe is perfect as it is. The only thing I did differently was buy refrigerated pie crust instead of making it from scratch...delicious!』

I told my friend, Todd Mchenry, to pick up some candy so we could give it out to trick or treaters, and he forgot. We were sitting at his moms house in Owensville, and I asked him about the candy, and he went on some long-winded story about how he was taping himself for that silky smooth lineless crotch, and my mind sort of wandered off. I came back when he started talking about how he lost one of his balls in a walnut shelling accident, and I asked him what it had to do with anything? I asked him if he had gotten candy, and he said no. But then he said not to worry about it.
So on halloween, I am watching 2 and a half men, and people are knocking at the door. I walk out and see Todd handing out candy g-strings to children. I slam the door and start yelling at him. He says "At least I hadn't worn any of the ones I gave out". Then I notice the multi-colored spots on his jeans. I ask him what is going on and he says "It's hot for halloween and I'm sweating". Then the police show up.
Moral of the story.
