I haven't seen any of the PBS Show. However, I am a huge fan of Broadway shows and music. I am a firm believer that the best music of America can be sewn across the tapestry of Broadway: here we have Sondheim and Streisand, Armstrong and Astaire, Merman and Martin, Berlin and Buckley. Listen to this music and you'll hear the music of America itself.
Okay, enough of my philosophical observations on Broadway. I already know that you love Broadway music. If you don't, you would have stopped reading before the end of the first paragraph. The question you want answered is this: I want a set of great Broadway music that I'll love; some that I know, some that I don't. Is this the set that I should buy?
The answer is: yes.
This set is brilliant, and well-worth the money you'll spend for it. That amount of money is quite a bit. However, with five CDs, 109 songs, and a twenty-something page booklet that is interesting and well-written, you will feel very satisfied with your purchase.
Quick, now, look back to the first paragraph and reread the names listed there. All of those were taken straight from this CD collection, and there are lots more besides those. I still haven't gotten to Jolson, Rivera, Andrews, Orbach, Grey, Lansbury, Mostel, or Channing (plus more). Initially, with this set, you will be overwhelmed with all of the great names and great music. It helps if you listen to it in order (Disc One before Disc 3, etc.), since all of the songs (excluding the first, GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY, which opens every Broadway set) are in chronological order. Listen to a song, and then read the annotation in the book. It will help you comprehend why this song, and the musical it belongs to, are important in Broadway history.
Or, you could just listen for enjoyment.
There are tons of beautiful songs here that I will cherish for the rest of my life: "Memory" from Cats, "Hello, Dolly!" from, well, Hello Dolly, "Open a New Window" from Mame, "Try to Remember" from The Fantasticks. Believe it or not, I had never heard any of these songs in their entirety before I purchased this set. Just think of what I was missing!
Of course, there are some slight disputable errors. There is nothing here from RAGTIME or ASPECTS OF LOVE. And, a couple of songs are sort of unnessecary (I could have done without "I Enjoy Being a Girl" from FLOWER DRUM SONG, 1958.) However, there are many gems I would have overlooked if I had purchased a less comprehensive set: songs like "Luck Be a Lady" from GUYS AND DOLLS or "The Party's Over" from BELLS ARE RINGING.
Overall, this is the set to have. It is a bit pricy, but the money is well worth the many hours of memories and pure enjoyment. Appreciate the magic of Broadway!』

I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes. As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL&HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN... But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's "Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...』

(Crystalline) 『I'm not a huge fan of gospel, because I find it to be led by emotion, and musically undisciplined. Rousing, yes - but a little goes a long, long way. I've also found most gospel recordings to be sonically challenged. Almost as if microphones were incapable of capturing the music with clarity. None of this holds true for "How Sweet the Sound." This is a beautifully recorded cd, and every tune is both musically precise, and emotionally resonant. It is, however, a little hard to listen to in one sitting because of the "sameness" of the arrangements. That's a small quibble - who says any cd has to be experienced all at once - and "There is a Balm in Gilead," alone is worth the price of admission.』

This set of mini-documentaries and interviews are a treasure that is woefully overlooked in the growing interest in silent film groups.
Oh - to have it in DVD!
The silent star recounting their excitement and memories are infectious. This is a classic work - very well done - and but for the intro music and some graphics, holds it's age .
As many silent film collections that have come forward in the last few years - some very obscure - this set would have more mass-appeal - and including the later classic actors' views on the silents would be interesting to Classic Movie Fans as well.
That it includes very major silent film stars interviewed in-depth is remarkable and one can see and feel time roll back - and the actor/actress reborn. Some of my favorites are Viola Dana recollecting the death of her fiance in an aerial stunt for the movies. The other is (I believe - I'm writing this from memory) Hal Roach's ribauld memories and also King Vidor's observations.
It's like sitting on the backlot of an old movie studio - and hearing the gossip retold of the teens and twenties!
This set caught my interest in silent film when I was in my teens viewing it in the early 1980's. It never let-go.
Does anyone know who can be written to request the DVD version be produced?

Benny Goodman is a legend and the DVD is a short but fitting tribute.』
(The Swing Era) 『If you love the swing era, this DVD is for you. Not only do you have Benny Goodman, but the stars who played with him are what made swing the great period that it was. Gene Kruppa stands out in particular. As this was taken from old movies, the picture quality may not be what one might hope, but I bought the record to listen to the music and I was not disappointed.

(a solid addition to info about Benny Goodman) 『I watched this DVD three times in as many nights when I rented it from Netflix. The music clips were better than those I've seen in other videos. I did not mind that there were few complete music pieces, have seen them elsewhere. Two things fascinated me about this one: the commentaries from his daughters, sister, brothers, and sidemen, though some comments offered as fact conflicted with those heard/read elsewhere, so I don't know what's really true. The second thing, and why I am buying this DVD after watching it three times, is the closeups of BG's fingering, much closer than in other videos. I am learning the clarinet, and my teacher keeps trying to keep my fingers as close to the instrument as possible and has mentioned that in certain cases a particular hand does not have to leave the instrument at all. Actually seeing that approach in motion hammered that home. It seemed that very few of Benny's fingers left the clarinet at times, even in up-tempo numbers. Seeing the undisputed master doing it is a great inspiration. And, yes, I know about his personality, warts and all, but as Jess Stacy says in the video, when you hear him, all is forgiven.』

It would have been nice to have had at least several complete performances from beginning to end , perhaps as bonus tracks. However, the clips that were briefly presented were fabulous. Other reviewers have stated in more detail the specifics of this DVD especially all of the collaborations of the other great musical talents of the time. This is a must have DVD for Benny Goodman fans. I will only give this 4 stars because of the annoying way the clips were edited.』

It was a great film of a great Broadway hit. Why make it again many may wonder? How could you top that gem in the MGM lexicon of late 50's Tennessee Williams filmed versions of his master works.
Cut to the 1980's and Elizabeth Taylor who in many ways at the time was not so big a movie star as she had been but was much in demand on television. Slimmed down and revitalized after the 1970's age of fat she was in her final bloom of beauty and at the top of her talent. A woman playing a star who really understood more than anyone alive what being a star of mega wattage meant. She had lived it, survived it and was triumphing over it. She was the anti Alexandra Delago who nearly had become Alexandra Delago but somehow managed to swerve and avoid that porcupine in the road of fame and live to tell about it. She was perfect casting for this T.V. movie of the play. And she had an understanding of Williams' poetry having done, "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "Suddenly Last Summer" and "Boom".
The supporting cast turns in some fine performances. In particular, Rip Torn, and Valerie Perrine shine in their roles. Mark Harman is just the right age to play Chance Wayne a gigolo on the edge of losing his looks and too obsessed with the past to take the one last opportunity Alexandra offers him to become what he thinks he wants to be, a star.
But it is Taylor's movie all the way. From her incredible early close-ups at the beach cabana to her final scene she commands the role as no other actress of her generation could. She inhabits the roll with a worldly understanding that under the monster that Alexandra has become there is still a human being who can reach out to help another even if it is too little too late. She also brings to the film a reality from her real life that no other actress, even the best method actresses around could muster. This adds a glittering and chilling edge to the performance. It is brilliant work in a lesser medium by a star and actress who was the master of blending fact and fiction as no one else quite can. 』
(If you can't get enough of Leroy Jethro Gibbs) 『Elizabeth Taylor as an over-the-hill actress (what casting!!) and a totally nude Mark Harmon. Who could ask for more?』
(Sweet bird of Youth as Tennessee Williams originally wrote it?) 『The Elizabeth Taylor/Mark Harmon version is much grittier than the 1962 Paul Newman/Geraldine Page version; and in some ways not as well acted. The characters at times seem forced, but it is far from a bad version. It can still grip you with the emotions of a washed up star and a grasping young wanna be star. I'm not sure why Megan Blake and Seymour Cassel are listed as the stars on the sale listing when Elizabeth Taylor and Mark Harmon are listed as the stars both on the box and in the movie itself, so if they are who you are looking for as the leads - they are there. This DVD version was done in 1989, not the date of release. It also has appearances by Rip Torn, who was also in the 1962 version as Boss Finley's son, now in this version as Boss Finley. Valerie Perrine also makes an appearance. The 1962 version did not use Tennessee Williams much more violent ending which is only hinted at and left to your imagination in this 1989 version. Elizabeth Taylor is always an interesting actress to watch, she steals the screen when she is present, which is no surprise. Mark Harmon affects a southern accent and does a credible job as Chance. However as ether a warning or an inducement to purchase whichever your wishes are; there is one bedroom scene with Chance and the love of his life Heavenly which is very revealing to say the least. This can be a surprise for a non rated DVD and one that was on television (this scene was probably not broadcast in the US or if it was, it was on a cable station.). So just realize this when you purchase it.』
(Elizabeth Taylor's the best thing about this movie...) 『"Sweet bird of youth" sounds really interesting on the backside of the DVD. Unfortunately the plot is not much thicker than it is described on there. The movie is slow paced and suffers from too few changes in setting.
Some of it is made up by the fact that Elizabeth Taylor is a true star who is always fascinating to watch on screen. But not even her acting abilities can save this movie...

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A Parent's Review) 『Sweet 15 was shown in 3 parts in my son's junior high Spanish class. When I heard about the subject matter, I went to the school to watch it.
I was appalled that this film would be shown in school! It's theme was supposed to be about quinceañera, but the real theme was how the girl's father was in the US illegally(breaking the law)and now needed signatures of past employers to fill out his amnesty papers (the teacher explained amnesty was forgiveness for breaking the law as long as you were employed the whole time you were here in theUSA).
The girl's father could not get in to see his supervisors at his past jobs in the lawn mowing, fence building, restaurant, junkyard and trucking industries because of horribly rude and racist white people (Not to mention the rough treatment by immigration officers during a raid).
When the 15-year old daughter took it upon herself to help her father and go to the employers herself for the signatures, she was faced with bigots like a white junkyard owner saying, "How should I know if he ever worked here? I've got alot of wetbacks working for me and they ALL look alike!"
Of course the young girl softened the owner's heart by shaming him and reminding him that signing her father's amnesty papers was the right thing to do.
This movie was a slap in the face to white people; it insulted Mexican-Americans and all immigrants who have worked so hard to come to this country LEGALLY through the system.
Sweet 15 had NO place in a school classroom. Its message was that it's ok to break the law (as long as you are working) and all would be forgiven. Not the right message for our young people. 』

In another review in this space I have called her the `country torch singer' par excellence. And she does not fail here. At least musically. However, cinematically is another question. While it was interesting (and a little disconcerting) to see the old black and white television clips I do not believe that this compilation does justice to her work. Patsy, like many another torch singer like Bessie Smith or Billie Holliday, needs to grow on you. The best way to do that is grab a Greatest Hits album and sit back. You won't want to turn the damn thing off. As for this film, if you have time watch it. 』

I was very happy to find the "No Sugar Added" product because I love chai and want to reduce my consumption of sugar. I usually add "soy milk" to my chai drinks but water is sometimes substituted. The customer reviews for this product were excellent and the nutrition information acceptable so I immediately placed an $18. order and anxiously waited for the product to arrive so I can indulge as others have.
However, I was very disappointed when the shipment arrived and I read on one of the individual packages that it contained "nonfat milk." I'm usually very careful about researching such information and I couldn't believe I had ordered something with milk! It's not a cheap product so I tried one of the packages "just because" and it was absolutely yummy like drinking a hot vegan chocolate milk shake! When I ordered the product, I presumed it had carob or some other "artificial chocolate" but most importantly I didn't see any indication of "dairy products" on the nutritional information page.
Although it is the most delicious chai drink I have ever tasted, there was no way as a vegan I was interested in keeping it so I shared it with my non-vegan friends who LOVE it and plan to place an order. One friend and her husband recently opened a "Coffee Cafe" and I suggested they order some for their chai lover customers. After giving away the dairy product, I decided to retrack my order through Amazon's system and confirmed that I was in fact automatically taken to a "nutrition information" page when I clicked on the "nutrition information" icon under the product description.
While still online I decided to place a call to Amazon's customer service " via the instant call feature" and explained to the helpful rep that I was not happy that the nutritional information page that popped up for the product does not list "nonfat milk." She guided me to the appropriate "ingredients page" that shows the product contains dairy which was separate from the "nutritional information" page. I was happy that she understood my frustration that the important dairy information was not readily available in all of the product marketing descriptions nor was it on the nutritional information page where one might expect it. I also pointed out that an "ingredients" icon should be included along with the "nutritional information" icon so customers have the WHOLE picture as to what the product contains. I was pleased the customer service rep offered to pass my recommendation to the appropriate department.
I wanted to submit a review of this product for the benefit of other vegans and lactose-intolerant customers who prefer non-milk products. For all of you customers who can consume dairy products, you WILL NOT be disappointed with this Big Train Chai. I was even tempted to go off my vegan diet and finish all 25 packages of the luscious chai in a short period of time with the excuse "I don't want to waste my money." :-) I decided that was not a good idea.
I have always received the utmost customer care from Amazon representatives and they did not let me down with this particular concern! Thanks, Amazon, from Seattle native Carrie now living in the Hilton Head Island area of South Carolina.』

Their first Earth's Best jar they loved was straight sweet potatoes. After water, sweet potatoes are the first ingredient in this one, followed by apricot puree. That's dessert for them right there. After that comes the chicken and then brown rice flour (not as good as brown rice though).
This is a meal that babies around the age of mine are probably almost all going to love instantly. Almost all babies love sweet potatoes for starters. Add apricot puree and there's really not much one could do to discourage babies after that. I recommend this flavor brand.
Ingredients per label: Water, organic sweet potatoes, organic apricot puree, mechanically separated organic chicken, organic brown rice flour.
The rice flour absorbed the water and gave it a real nice consistency, and the sweet potatoes gave it a nice color.
Nutrition per label: 80 calories, 15% protein, 90% vitamin A, 2% vitamin C, 2% calcium and 6% iron.
This one had the most vitamin A of all Earth's Best jars I've tried. But overall, without using formula, I don't think there's enough nutrition in these jars and I am open to suggestions made in comments.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A gift from the Goddess of Mercy.) 『Like the famously smoky Lapsang Souchong, Oolong tea comes from mist-enshrouded Wuyi Mountains in the northwestern corner of China's Fujian Province (north of Guangdong [Canton] Province), whose greatest tourist draw besides its mountains is its coast line on the Taiwan Straits, and where tea has been grown at least since the Sung Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279).
In terms of production, Oolong tea takes a middle position between the fully fermented black teas (Darjeeling, Assam, Ceylon, Kenya, Lapsang Souchong, etc.) and the unfermented green teas (Sencha, Maccha, Gyokuro, Hougicha/Hojicha, Gunpowder Green), in that it is part-fermented or "brown" tea. Its long, dark leaves' fermentation is stopped when they are about 30% red and 70% green, after which they are rubbed to promote their aroma and texture and then dried over charcoal.
Ti Quan (Kuan) Yin Oolong takes its name from the Goddess of Mercy (Quan Yin), whose statues can often be found in front of Buddhist temples. Quan Yin is a bodhisattva, i.e. a person who has earned the right to leave this world of misery and enter nirvana, but who has volunteered to stay on earth and assist others in their quest for enlightenment. Legend has it that in a village whose temple was adorned by an iron ("ti") statue of the goddess, one night Quan Yin appeared in a local farmer's dream and guided him to a cave behind the temple. There, she told him, he would find a treasure he was to tend and share with others. The treasure he did find when he went to the cave the very next morning turned out to be a small tea plant, which he took home and nursed. When it had grown to its full size, its leaves produced this particularly aromatic tea with the delicate fragrance of fruits and spices and a rich, golden color. As he had been bidden by the goddess, the farmer shared it with his neighbors, and he also dedicated it to Quan Yin in grateful appreciation of her gift.

I hope Fisher-Price fixes this design flaw in the next version! Otherwise, we are quite pleased with the boat and accessories, although we do wish that some of the action figures were female.』

I found it pretty educational. As with most Imaginext items, this is extremely durable, it has wheels on the bottom and when you push the boat alond the little satellite thing spins around. It's very realistic. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a young child.』

The stitching on this one is great, durable, the head doesn't smush in when pressed, the head doesnt get loose like the other cheap ones, and she is much prettier and looks more expensive than the cheap ones. (Best volume yet!) 『This is my favorite volume of the young Christy Miller books. I cried over the last two so much. I love when Christy and Todd are together, they're so perfect for each other! I've read all of the Christy books, and all of them made me want a hero like Todd.』
(Incredible!) 『No two ways about it, I love these books, and having a three-in-one version makes it all the better. This book contains the concluding volumes in the Christy Miller series, and it's interesting to see how she's progressed from Summer Promise.
In a Time to Cherish, Christy's relationship with Todd couldn't be better as they offically define that they're boyfriend-girlfriend. However, Christy's relationship with her best friend, Katie, on the the other hand, isn't going so well when Katie, desperate for a boyfriend and feeling left out, begins dating Michael, a non-Christian. This story was enthralling, and included some very sweet moments between Christy and Todd. It really inspired me to 'hold out for that hero.'
In Sweet Dreams, after Katie's painful break-up with Michael comes slow healing, and Christy's beginning to think that everything is good again. However, she has no idea that she'll soon be faced with one of the hardest decisions she's ever had to face. I cried at the ending of this book, yet it hit me hard, making me wonder if I could make the same sacrifice as Christy did.
A Promise is Forever would have to be one of my favorite books in the whole series. A large period of time has elapsed since Sweet Dreams, and we find Christy traveling to England for a mission's trip with Doug who's her new boyfriend, Tracy, and Katie. She expects the trip to be a good way to serve God, but she doesn't anticipate any of the speed bumps along the way, such as conlict in her group and trouble with Doug, but most of all, being sent to Spain to serve, away from the rest of her friends. This book will have you in tears at it's touching ending. A fun thing was that we're introduced to Sierra Jensen, Robin Jones Gunn's next book series. Having read the Sierra Jensen books already, it was interesting to see Sierra from Christy's point of view.
