The seeds arrived in a small, plastic, zip-lock bag&I sowed some of them in a 12" pot along with white radish, white beet&chamomille seeds. (The pot also contained 1 strawberry&5 echinacea plants.) I have no idea how well this combination is going to do together, so we'll see. (I like to experiment!) I'll report back later.』

『I started making my own yogurt after reading French Women Don't Get Fat. I've tried several starters; I think this one tastes good and is economical.

I use the Donvier yogurt machine which makes 8 6oz. jars. I bring to a boil 44 oz. (about 5 1/2 cups) of skim milk then let it stand till it reaches room temperature. I add 3 heaping tablespoons of Easiyo starter to the milk and whisk. I cook it for 13 hours.

The lemon flavor is natural tasting. Sometimes, I add lemon zest for a sharper taste.』

『Delicious! New Zealand cows don't have that wonderful reputation for nothing! This comes across in the yoghurt. It is delicious, absolutely wonderful. If you are used to that awful stuff full of artificial flavors and preservatives you may think differently but to me, this not too sweet not too tart lemon, was the perfect blend of goodness. The creamy texture just melted on my tongue. It was almost like eating a decadent dessert without the calories! So far I have also tried the strawberry and the plain with equally satisfying results. Yes, even the plain could be eaten by anyone without feeling it had to have a lot of added anything. If you allow it to stand a long time when making it, it will have added tartness but if not, it will be creamy and almost sweet as well. Just, yum!.As for the cost (I've heard complaints from a few), it is equivalent to what I sometimes buy in the grocery store, but I buy a natural litre size greek yogurt (it doesn't tout itself as natural it just is). That aside, it IS an imported product, perhaps as it gains in popularity (and it will), becomes more well known, they ship more in, the costs will go down and we will all reap the benefits. In the meantime, I will continue to watch for free shipping and specials on Amazon.com when I need a new supply as at the present time, they seem to have the best prices.』

『If you bought the Girlfriend album and found it to be as great as I did, you might wonder why you would buy it again. Aside from the enhanced sound and additional demo cuts, disc 2 features some incredible live cuts. This includes a cover of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" and a version of "Girlfriend" that features different, yet awesome guitar riffs. If you're a Matthew Sweet fan considering the purchase of this Legacy Edition, stop thinking about it!』

(Power-pop nirvana)
『The original release of Sweet's third album in 1991 laid down a power-pop gauntlet for the decade. His collection of fifteen songs (augmented here to 18 with the addition of tracks featured on various import issues) perfectly balanced his talents and influences in a way its predecessors and successors never managed. Gone were the '80s production excesses of his debut, in was the electric inferno of Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd's guitars. Gone were the fanboy sci-fi lyrics of the preceding "Earth" LP, in were words of love, betrayal and seething anger.

Sweet's singing is nearly spiritual in its sublime expressions of joy and heartbreak. It's the sort of palpable, heart-on-sleeve emotion that marks the best power pop, from The Beatles through Big Star, Dwight Twilley, Teenage Fanclub and others. Sweet's follow-up albums would give in to rock guitar excess, losing the focus and compactness that's allowed "Girlfriend" to retain its original power fifteen years on. Sweet, Lloyd and Velvet Crush drummer Ric Menck open the album with a crushing blow of rhythmic pop, highlighted by Lloyd's dazzling solo atop Sweet's riffing electric guitar and pounding bass. Sweet sings as a lost man, praying for a sign to point the way; the album then rewinds to reveal how he came to this desolate place.

"I've Been Waiting" captures the euphoric first flush of love with a chiming mix of electric and acoustic guitars. The noose is set in "Girlfriend" when Sweet realizes his needs, accompanied by Quine's muscular guitar and Sweet's multi-tracked harmonies. Love's brilliance is blinding in "Looking at the Sun" and belies an underlying fracture that grows into jealousy and neediness with the busy phone line of "Winona" (underlined by Greg Leisz heartbreaking pedal steel). The comic-book fantasy of "Evangeline" diverts the singer's attention only momentarily before the hammer falls. And when it falls, it falls hard. Very, very hard.

The dragging tempo and Lennon-like splats of rhythm guitar spell the beginning of the end on "Day for Night." The bitter "Thought I Knew You" provides Sweet the vehicle to release years of pent-up resentment, seething with the question "how can I describe the way you slowly put my hope away?" Leisz's pedal steel returns for the morning-after hangover wallow, "You Don't Love Me," which stings deeply with the self-medicating line, "you can't see how I matter in this world." The hurt persists in "I Wanted to Tell You," but the upbeat tempo and strident vocal find the anger seemingly dissipated. Robert Quine adds another terrific solo and the mix of acoustic guitar and overdubbed harmony vocals provide a hint of sunshine through the clouds.

Sweet's need to analyze what went wrong continues in "Don't Go," suggesting he hasn't fully moved on, and trying his ex-lover's patience. The lullaby "Your Sweet Voice" finds the singer finally at rest, but with "Does She Talk?" he's back on the prowl, possibly warning someone involved with his ex ("Gonna need you a key to open the door to her heart / Or are you afraid her body is missing that part?"). The original album closes on a somber, existential note, wondering whether there is anyone to actually hear the plea that opened the song cycle and smoothly segueing back to track 1.

Volcano's fifteenth anniversary 2-CD reissue of this title fleshes out the original in two dimensions. Disc one is augmented with a trio of songs ("Good Friend," "Superdeformed" and "Teenage Female") that had been attached to various import album and CD single issues. All are good, but almost superfluous given the strength of the original album. The real treat is disc two, which reissues the contemporaneous promo-only "Good Friend" CD. The thirteen tracks include acoustic demos, live versions and a pair of covers (Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer," with the Indigo Girls, and John Lennon's "Isoloation").

The demo of "Divine Intervention," stripped of the searing electric guitars of the album turns the song into a Richie Havens-styled plea, highlighted by the acoustic lead playing of Ivan Julian. The live acoustic rendition of "Thought I Knew You" is sung with a fresh sense-memory of the song's origin, and "You Don't Love Me" and "Winona," both shorn of Greg Leisz pedal steel, are more emotionally spent and less country than the album takes. The bonus disc's highlight is an early recording of "Someone to Pull the Trigger" with an end-of-the-rope vocal and ragged production that bests the finished version on Sweet's later "Altered Beast" CD.

The original album's production is flawless and clear, balancing Sweet's vocals perfectly against the onslaught of drums, bass and guitar. The bonus disc sounds like the variety of sources from which it was constructed, with tightly recorded acoustic demos back-to-back with live outings. Disc two serves as a commentary on the original artifact, exposing some roots and offering interpretations. For those who've memorized every nuance of the original LP, "Good Friend" shines a new light on a beloved friend.

In both its original single-CD issue or this expanded reissue, this is an essential for any fan of melodic rock and power-pop. It's a tour de force that Sweet never repeated at album length. [©2007 hyperbolium dot com]』

(A Classic Made Better)
『Since it's release in 1991, this has been one of my absolute, favorite cd's. The title track alone is one of the great rock and roll songs of all times, but really, there isn't a weak track anywhere. And with the addition of the "Good Friends" cd, it becomes essential.

But why should you buy it? Glad you asked. The guitar work from Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine is outstanding by any standard. The sound is so nice and clean that you can pick out 5 or 6 guitar lines on almost every song. The vocals are top notch, and just the tight playing of all the musicians is amazing. The songs themselves are so good that even when they're stripped down, as they are on the "Goodfriends" tracks, they all still stand up. It really is an amazing work, and a true must buy. Sweet's albums since this one have been a bit uneven, with a few solid tracks and filler. But this one is one of the few cd's that I'll play from beginning to end, including all the bonus tracks, which I had hunted down on my own over the years.

Buy it, you'll like it.』

(A Classic Album Just Got Better)
『Matthew Sweet's 1991 power pop masterpiece just got better with this two-disc 15th anniverasry reissue. In addition to three bonus tracks taken from the Japanese edition of GIRLFRIEND ("Good Friend," "Superdeformed" and "Teenage Female"), there is a second disc entitled GOODFRIEND, that was initially made available only to a handful of retail, radio and record label insiders. This collection of home demos and live tracks is now available commercially for the first time. This bonus disc alone is worth the purchase price.

GOODFRIEND features nine of the fifteen tracks on the original release, including two live renditions of "Girlfriend," one from a BBC 1 broadcast and the other from a Cleveland show. Also included are two covers: a live version of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" and a demo version of John Lennon's "Isolation." The real revelations are the acoustic demos. On these tracks the songs are stripped to their essence. "Divine Intervention" becomes a beautifully melodic song of hope and uncertainty. Without Greg Liesz's pedal steel, Winona" loses its country feel but not its poignancy. And "Looking at the Sun" has a haunting beauty in this stark arrangement. [All the live tracks and demos were recorded after the release of GIRLFRIEND between March and September of 1992.]

I first purchased GIRLFRIEND on cassette when it was released in 1991, and then again a few years later to upgrade to CD. But this Deluxe Edition justifies purchasing it again. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED』

(Sweet, Matthew...........)
『I just LOVE this cd! Basically, the songs are about love lost, love found, and love is hard-pretty universal topics for a pop album. What makes this one stand out is the music-if you love the Beatles as much as James Taylor, or The Kinks as much as Paul Simon, this is a cd for you. There's lots of loud guitars, including pedal steel on a few of the songs, and Matthew has a very good voice for singing pop songs. Then you get to the bonus disc called "Good Friend" which has live and demo versions of the same songs, along with a few choice covers. The whole thing has been remastered and the sound is crystal clear. I know the original came out in 1991, and I somehow missed it all these years--the first time I heard it I thought it sounded a little like Pernice Brothers on steriods, which is a good thing. Bottom line, if you like melodic pop music and high octane guitar rock, this is for you. Highly Recommended!』

(Big Band at it's best)
『I have "In the Christmas Mood" Vols.1 and 2 and they are the best Christmas recordings in my collection. The current Glenn Miller Orch. owes it's huge success to Larry O'Brien who has been it's director for many years. The band is constantly touring the U.S. and even has an annual engagement in Japan and other parts of the world. In January 1992 they recorded an album called "Here We Go Again" (Ranwood RDS 1007). The arrangements follow Glenn Miller's original and the trombone solos by Larry O'Brien are spell binding. He follows Tommy Dorsey's style but does it much better than Tommy simply because he is a perfectionist. Surely Glenn would be very proud and thankful knowing his band is still #1.』

『For any that love holiday music, and especially for those that like Orchestra music such as the great Glenn Miller, this is the CD for you. All the great holiday tunes with the special and wornderful touch of swing music by the greatest orchestra. Be sure to include in your purchase...or at least consider them for next time...In the Christmas Mood 2 and In the Nutcracker mood; they are just as wonderful.』

(Great buy for the money)
『The "Chicago Swing Fan" who complained below may do well to remember that Glenn Miller's never really was a swing band. Miller was foremost a businessman, and his orchestra played commercial dance music. Good dance music? Good big band music? Yes, I think so, but in terms of swing, he didn't hold a candle to Benny Goodman in his prime. Having said that, don't expect hot, jazzy swing from this CD. If you like the old Miller records, you'll love this CD. It was recorded sometime around 1990 by the current band going under the Miller name, and all in all, represents a tasty selection of holiday goodies in authentic Miller style. Occasionally, some of the arrangements sound bit more "modern" than anything Miller would have played in his lifetime, but the general feeling is there. The disc is well-recorded and has great sound. It's quite pleasant and makes a great accompaniment for decorating the tree, Christmas parties, driving around town, sipping egg nog--just about anything! When my original copy of this broke several years ago (yes, it shattered... don't ask how!) I quickly ordered another copy. This CD has become one of my favorite holiday recordings. And for the price, you can't go wrong. Recommended.』

(Puts me in the Christmas mood)
『I'm not a swing or Glen Miller afficionodo, but I really enjoy this cd. The songs have on old time feel, but one that works for me because of it's swing/big band roots. I was suprised to find a few tracks with vocals, but they don't detract fornm the overall feel of the cd and actually provide a nice mix to the set. The final song,"In The Christmas Mood"is an original which nicely sums up the entire project. I use this and it's sister albums (In The Christmas Mood II and The Glen Miller Nuctcracker) as background music at partes and it never fails to get people festive and dancing around the room. My only complaint would be that running at 40:41, it seems the party ends too soon. But I guess that's more of a compliment than a complaint isn't it?』

(Glenn Miller Orchestra Earns Their Wings)
『This CD album became volume 1 of a 3-volume box set. It was recorded by the "Glenn Miller Orchestra" which inherited the authentic "Glenn Miller" style of arrangement, orchestration, dynamics and vocal style. The Orchestra obviously had a lot of fun doing it using "standard" Christmas melodies. (They reveal in the signature "In the Christmas Mood" number that they still have a hankering for the Andrews sisters.)

Glenn Miller himself, who had been promoted to a major in the Army, died in a plane accident during World War II on the way to entertaining the troops in Europe but not before he imprinted his own style on his own band during the ongoing "Big Band" era.

"In the Christmas Mood", inspired by the GM band's most well-known and well-known work, "In the Mood", but drawing on the entire GM repertoire is therefore part tribute, part nostagia and pure entertainment. You will enjoy this CD and the other two in the box set - share it with your kids, your friends, your associates during Christmas parties and all during the season.

I have explored the GM websites and read the history. My father played GM and Tommy Dorsey when I was but a toddler.

After you buy "In the Christmas Mood, vol. 1" then go to the other two (warning: go for the box set now - you will want it later after you try this one).』

『This movie has to be the worst of the Genre, there is no point to it, its disgusting and revolting, it's like a really bad porno, he does this disgusting chubby white girl in the middle of a club, it's gross and has no point. It's not really sticking it to the man if that was what it was intended to do as most similar (related) films are.』

The entire movie has no point, and certainly no purpose. What ever "Black Power" message this film was trying to make is lost. You'll find yourself spending most of your time trying to figure out just what in the hell this movie is about. This may have been one of the first "Black Power" movies from the 70's and it's also the worst.

Sweetback pretty much runs through the entire movie, and when he is not running, he is having sex. It only breaks from that cycle to show him beating up a cop or few. The weird thing about this film is that the "Sex" has nothing to do with anything! It's mostly just out of context the entire film. This movie really has no plot. It's actually just Melvin Van Peebles running from the city to the desert.

Watching this movie is like getting high. It's confusing, it makes no sense, and it's just strange as hell. "You bled my mamma, You bled my pappa, but you won't bleed me" get used to that phrase, because that's all you'll ever hear in the back tracking music this entire film. Interestingly enough Earthwind and Fire provided the music for this film, this being one of their earliest gigs. That's probably the only signifigant thing in this film worth taking note of.

I can't even think of a single solitary reason why this is worth watching today. It cetainly is not worth owning. I'm suprised this even made it from VHS to DVD. I mean I don't mind the badly recorded audio or visuals of this film, I expect that. There's plenty of low budget films that look horrible; however, a good low budget film makes up for that with an outstanding storyline. This waste of footage has neither.

I don't care if this is supposed to be a great "Black" accomplishment, this is trash! This is more of a great "Black" embarassment. If your looking for a 70's Black Power flick with a message I highly recommend "Watermelon Man." Now that's a great film.

The only thing this films stands as today is a reminder, that even people with absolutely no talent can produce something that generates them money.』

Bill Cosby even co-financed the film.

Ten years ago, I purchased "Sweetback" on VHS, and I was completely, blown away by this controversial, yet revolutinary, independent Black film. Bottom Line: If it weren't for Melvin Van Peebles raising the bar in filmmaking, there would be no Spike Lee or John Singleton.』

He becomes the target of a manhunt when he kills two cops who beat up a young black activist, and he bounces from hideout to hideout before running for the border, all the while getting more booty than Shaft and Superfly put together. The movie was so inflammatory by conservative industry standards that it was "Rated X by an All White Jury," which the ads proudly touted. The unusual mix of agitprop and exploitation is directed in a jagged style that recalls Godard and set to a funky score performed by Earth, Wind&Fire, which Van Peebles intercuts with chanting Greek chorus-like slogans. 『This DVD showcases some top notch performers working
together on some great tunes. They demonstrate that
great warmth and harmony among musicians that is such
an important facet of jazz. There is, only one flaw,
in my opinion, and that is, in the transfer process.
There are freezes, in spots on the show. I bought mine
locally, and the store exchanged it, still, same exact
freezes, in the same exact places. Rather unprofessional
for a modern production. But that said, I overlooked
these flaws, as the event itself, overshadowed this.』

『The company that made this DVD decided to get creative with its format and ruined the show. First of all, instead of having each tune on a different track they put each head and solo on their own track. Different... but pointless. Especially because on my disc, track 17 (which is Billy Higgins solo on the third tune) does skip to track 18, but track 18 is actually a repeat of track 5 (which is the head out of the first tune). So the head out of the third tune is replaced with the head from the first tune. I sent it back and got another with the same glitch. There are seven tunes and 42 tracks. This makes your thumb do some hard work if you want to skip to another tune without going back to the main menu and choosing 'selection'. But the most annoying thing about this DVD is that throughout the performance yellow letters pop up in front of the musicians distracting us from the great solos. The yellow letters tell us facts about the musician who is soloing. For example, "Cedar Walton has played with numerous musicians and appeared on a recording with Kenny Dorham." Many of them are actually interesting but it's very distracting because when they pop up you automatically begin reading instead of listening. I won't say that this DVD will not be enjoyable to you but I know I was a lot more excited to get it than I am watching it now. Too many distractions. The camera shots are nice and tasteful with a good balance of close-ups and far shots. But those damn yellow words...』

『Art Farmer is one of my personal gods, and when he's joined by the dream rhythm section of cedar walton, ron carter and billy higgins all on top form, the music doesn't disappoint. However my DVD skips all over the place, and has awful cuts. I wrote to the manufacturer, but no reply - so I guess they don't really care. A tragedy to treat timeless classic music in this manner.
Having said this, the music is essential so has to be heard (get the video perhaps?)』

『I like Don Johnson in almost everything. The movie had alot of "F" words and God**** (which I didn't like). Overall, the movie was heartfelt and at times you wanted to just scream at both Susan and Don as they went through a 'rough patch' in their marriage. The acting was good and it made you think alot about life in general. It made me want to sit my husband down to watch it (maybe one day). I wouldn't let kids watch this because it has foul language, but as an adult I did my best to ignore it. The writer's could of definately left out the foul language or used less intense foul language. If you like Don Johnson, add this to your collection!』

『I first saw Sweethearts Dance at its original release in 1988. I went alone, and I was lonely, because my wife and two sons were on a school trip or something. Perhaps because of this, it has stayed in my memory all these eighteen years. Sweethearts Dance was released the year before Field of Dreams, and in some ways it deserves similar status. Field of Dreams is about how easiy life can go awry. Everything is resolved through magic. Sweethearts Dance is about how easily the optimism of youth and the passion of marriage can be diluted by the routines of making a living, raising children, and managing a family. Everything is resolved through the persistence of love. Which one is more true to life? The film contains some memorable scenes, such as the turning point when Susan Sarandon's and Don Johnson's characters admit that all they want is to love each other. As Don, sitting in a tree outside the window of his own bedroom, tells his wife, "How did things get so screwed up? I miss you. I miss our children," my eyes filled with tears. Jeff Daniels, one of the best supporting actors in the business, loves Don and Susan both, and he has his own problems with love. He has found the perfect woman, but he pushes too hard and nearly loses her. The scene in which she calls him from home while he is on vacation to thank him for asking him to marry her also tugs at the heart. Jeff is able to say, "I like you," and it's enough to restore the relationship. The ending of the movie is one of the most delightful ever filmed--you'll laugh and cry at the tenderness and ridiculousness of it. Tender and ridiculous--kind of how love is sometimes. Last week I stumbled on it while looking for something else and bought it. Last night I watched it with my wife. It felt like something important had finally been finished.』

Jim Sotos--a nom de plume for music video and TV commercial mogul Dimitri Sotirakis--directed only four movies in his long and distinguished career, but all four of them are well-respected by a small, but steadily growing, number of critics and fans. Interestingly, Sotirakis' four movies are all in different genres. Forced Entry was a straight thriller. Hot Moves was a cheap exploitation film. Beverly Hills Brats was a family comedy. And then there is Sweet Sixteen, his entry into the horror genre. It's a pretty basic slasher film with supernatural elements, but Sotirakis' ability to convince pretty big names to appear in his movies, as well as his distinctive directorial style, put Sweet Sixteen above the average level of film coming out during the great slasher film glut of the early eighties.

Melissa (Aleisa Shirley from Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone) and her family have just moved to a small desert town (and we get the feeling this isn't the first time they've moved house in the recent past) that seems quiet on the surface, but has a lingering, nasty racism brewing just beneath the surface. Melissa, being the naïve new kid, stumbles into the middle of a confrontation between a Native American man and a high school classmate (which has nothing to do with my plot synopsis, but sets up a lot of stuff later, so pay attention to it) before she and a prospective new boyfriend head off for some alone time. Everything's all well and good until he turns up dead the next morning. This starts a trend, unfortunately, and suspicion falls equally on Melissa and Jason Longshadow (Don Shanks of Halloween 5), the Native American guy I mentioned before. Melissa's father, archaeologist John Morgan (The Avengers' Patrick Macnee), being more civilized than the natives, doesn't believe the red Injun is responsible (since everyone else thinks he is because he's a red Injun) and can't believe his daughter capable of the murders, so he sets out to figure out what's going on before one of them gets lynched.

One of the things that distinguishes Sweet Sixteen from its contemporaries is its examination of racism. Sure, by 1982, film had explored racism before. But in slasher films? Not your typical content. As well, when was the last time you saw Patrick Macnee in a slasher flick? (You never did again, either.) As well, the cast also includes Susan Strasberg (as Melissa's beleaguered mom) and Don Stroud; a pretty heavy cast indeed for an early-eighties movie of any sort not produced by Irwin Allen. While the script (the first--and last--feature-length script by Erwin Goldman) doesn't give the cast a great deal to work with, they do what they can, and make the material seem a bit better tan it actually is. Not too many surprises to be had here, but it's a good, solid slasher flick from the heyday of slasher flicks, and it's been unjustly overlooked in recent years. Rediscover it if you're a fan of the genre; it's worth your while. ***

Every boy around Melissa dies soon after encountering her. Sweet Sixteen is a cryptic film that is often enjoyable. Not often is the horror genre mixed with mystification, but in the case of Sweet Sixteen it is. Southern Sheriff Bo Hopkins is once again a crumb to watch, as he plays the role for the hundredth time. The film isn't as obvious as you might think, and it holds your interest until the finale. Few flaws in the film makes it a pleasurable viewing. You'll enjoy the film and its astounding climax. The acting is standard, and the film is as well.』

You see Bit-O-Honey occasionally in convenience stores, repackaged; but they are seldom fresh. These were so fresh and chewy; and the aroma was that distinctive honey and almond essence! 『I bought 12 boxes of this kind. The word "CASHEW" on the box promted me to buy 12 boxes. When I received the package, I was surprised to learned that most of the junks inside are oats. It is too sweet. I would not recommend my friends to buy these, never.』

Our stores had a sell and Air Wick was all they had left. We have been useing both kinds all summer long and let me say that the glade version was too expensive to continue buying. True they both cost around the same but the glade only last about half the time as the air wick. Within the month and every month I'll change the Glade version twice while the Air Wick version didn't need changing for a whole month. I left both settings on 5 for the whole summer (my Glade did have a fan) and no the Glade version wasn't stronger simply because it had a fan on it I thought it would've been and at 3.99 at amazon which it's cheaper than my stores that is still too much to pay twice a month for ten of them. The bottom line is if you buy scented plugin oils then you might come out cheaper with the Air Wick version instead of Glade. Like I said my settings stays on 5 (I like mines to be loud) all the time and they are all over my house. Oh yeah I like the ones with the night light for thoes dark places in my house, I use 3 as children night lights. No matter how the plugs are in your house like mines side ways.
