Both absolutely love them. I feel really good about giving these treats. I try to keep her treats healthy -- dried apricots, homemade dried chicken, etc. I am very comfortable with Sam's Yams.
I've tried the regular style of Sam's Yams and prefer the Bichon Fries style. A bag lasts longer. I found myself breaking the regular ones into pieces, so I found it easier to get the fries. I've looked at other brands of dried yams, but they have a really strange, fake-looking color to them. I will stick with Sam's. Haley has no complaints!』

(Fifty dance hits of the thirties and forties) 『For those of us raised on the music of the second half of the twentieth century, the music contained on this CD does not sound like music to dance to - more like easy listening music to relax to - but Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians were one of the leading dance bands of their day.
They had 218 hits of their own on the American charts, of which 50 can be found here. They also had other hits as the backing group to Hildegarde, Kate Smith and Bing Crosby.
The band featured Carmen Lombardo (Guy's brother) on vocals up to 1941, but most of the recordings here are from the period after 1941. Carmen sometimes sang with the band after 1941 and there are a few earlier tracks here, so you get a chance to hear him on some tracks here. The band sometimes re-recorded their earlier hits and Jasmine have sometimes included those rather than the originals, possibly because Guy recorded for several record labels. The recordings on this collection were all made for Decca, for whom Guy recorded in 1934 and 1935, then from 1938 to the end of his hit-making career in the fifties.
Even if you are new to Guy's music, fans of the music of that era may recognise some of the songs, including The trolley song, Shoo-fly pie and apple pan dowdy, Five feet two eyes of blue, Swinging on a star, Blues in the night, For me and my gal, Red sails in the sunset, By the light of the silvery moon, After the ball, St Louis blues, Little Dutch mill, The band played on, South of the border, Easter parade and The moon of Manakoora. In those days, it was customary for several versions to be in the charts simultaneously, so some of these songs also charted for Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby and others. Sometimes Guy ended up with the biggest hit, sometimes not. When it comes to whose version was best, it's all a matter of personal preference. In any case, all of them are brilliant in different ways.
People may not dance to this kind of music these days, but Guy and his orchestra made some very high quality music. This collection contains 50 of their finest recordings. This would make a great start to any collection of Guy's music, but I recommend the ASV collection The band played on 25 number one hits, which I've already reviewed, as an even better starting point. There is very little overlap, as this collection avoids most of the number ones, which occurred mainly in the early part of his career.』

I am totally in love with his music! This cd is fantastic beginning to end! I kick back in the porch swing with my grandbabies and listen while they fall asleep. I think they love it too. We'll all have to move inside now that it is getting cold, but Joe Purdy is coming with us! I hate what I had to pay for the cd, but if it's no longer being produced, I feel lucky to have gotten it. My girls who are 40 and 28 and wild about Jack Johnson are also into the Julie Blue cd as well as joe's other cd's I purchased. There is a slight resemblence. but Joe's voice is more earthy. I am hooked for life. I don't think you can go wrong with this one, if you can still find it.』

Give it a try if you love Lost and if love simple, beautiful, relaxing mood music.』

Of particular interest to me was comparing the efforts of this first release as the season progressed into the second portion and appreciating the increased "tightness" of the performances; just what one should expect with any group! If you appreciate good musicianship and performances you won't be disappointed. And, come on, Lea Michelle and Amber Riley have vocal talents near the top of the curve! What a pleasure this has been to listen to repeatedly.』
(great music--and I love those three bonus songs) 『This excellent first volume of music from the show Glee with its three bonus tracks gives us nothing but excellent music; there's not a dud in the bunch here! It's rare that I hear and enjoy so many fine cover songs all on one album--but here they are and I'm very impressed. If you can, try to get this version of the first volume of the music from Glee so that you have the three bonus songs. The quality of the sound is excellent and those liner notes give us the song credits as well as which cast members sing which songs.
"Don't Stop Believin'" gets the royal treatment from Lea Michele and Cory Monteith; they perform this ballad by Journey with panache and their excellent diction enhances their performance all the more. The musical arrangement is lush with guitars, drums, percussion and that chorus all going full throttle to make this number shine! "Can't Fight This Feeling" gets a sensitive interpretation from Cory Monteith who makes this tune sound new and fresh. In addition, "Gold Digger" is very well done; this rendition of "Gold Digger" has lots of energy and that beat is awesome! The background vocals sound awesome, too.
"Take a Bow," a poignant song recorded by Rihanna, features Lea Michele nicely and it's a major highlight of this album. The piano sounds great in the arrangement, too. And listen for Amber Riley, a star destined to become a superstar, to do "Bust Your Windows" with quite a stunning arrangement. "Bust Your Windows" is not a happy song yet it's a hauntingly beautiful tune that lingers in my head long after I hear it; I find myself pushing the "repeat" button on my CD player every time I hear Amber do this one up right!
"Taking Chances" is terrific; and "Alone" starts with great music--when Kristen Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison perform it, "Alone" takes flight! "Maybe This Time" gets the royal treatment from Lea Michelle and Kristen Chenoweth--I love it! Moreover, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley and Kevin McHale do a splendid rendition of Freddy Mercury's "Somebody to Love;" "Somebody to Love" has a chorus that makes it sound even better! "Hate on Me" is a memorable number that Amber Riley aces as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing--but of course we know that Amber's talent easily carries her through.
"No Air" is quite moving and brilliantly executed; and there's yet another gem in "You Keep Me Hangin' On" which features Dianna Agron. The tempo is slightly faster than I'm used to but it still holds its own very well. "Keep Holding On" is very memorable; and their take on Young MC's "Bust a Move" is excellent. Listen also for Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" which features Mark Salling singing at his very best. The album then gives us a splendid "Dancing with Myself" featuring Kevin McHale and "Defying Gravity" with Chris Colfer and Lea Michele in the spotlight.
And then we have the three bonus tracks that I love to hear. "I Wanna S** You Up" has a great beat and Matthew Morrison with the rest all deliver this really, REALLY well. The backup vocalists harmonize faultlessly and the music is just right for this number--good percussion in particular. "I Could Have Danced All Night" comes originally from the show "My Fair Lady;" Jayma Mays sings with all her heart and soul and her sophisticated phrasing impresses me to no end. The arrangement makes good use of the strings, too. The album ends with the third bonus track, "Leaving on a Jet Plane" featuring Matthew Morrison; Matthew gives this ballad a most sensitive interpretation and it leaves me wanting more! The guitar playing enhances the music for this last track, too.
Glee: The Music, Volume 1 with its three bonus tracks is a must-have for fans of this show. In fact, this music is so good that even if you've never watched the show you will love this album. People who enjoy pop will also want this for their collections.』
(Really!?!) 『I have already purchased the Glee Soundtracks and now I have to find out that I have to get them on Amazon to get all the bonus songs? Why can't you make all the songs mp3 so we can by them individually, it's not fair to us to re-buy the entire album to get the extra songs we can't find anywhere else. For instance, I've looked everywhere, including iTunes for "Leaving on a Jet Plane" to find that it's here and in order to get it I have to purchase the entire album, seems like a waste of my money since I have the other 17 songs. I checked the other CD's here without the "bonus" songs and you can purchase those songs individually, it would make since to do the same here. I don't usually post rants about things on sites like these, but it doesn't seem fair to the customer, us, to buy a CD we have all but 3 songs of.』

I love this show and I love the new spin on every tune. In the earlier songs, there was a lot of processing on the vocals, but they seemed to have cut back on that a bit as the season went along and it sounds much better. A fairly light hearted musical flick with Sammy Davis Jnr being the show stealer in the "Big Daddy" number - one I remembered very well from a young child. The dance numbers are well staged and the costumes colourful (except for Miss "Plain Jane" Sweet Charity herself) - the totally impossible beehive hairdo's. So much of the music I knew - and that you'll probably will too - you never realized it was from this movie/show.』
(Pay better attention, Mr. Fine) 『First off, the film version of "Sweet Charity" is, in no way, an essential video. It does preserve Bob Fosse's marvelous choreography from his original stage direction, including "Big Spender", which, on film, looks like an obvious template for many of the cabaret sequences in "Cabaret". Unfortunately, Fosse went a little nuts trying to pull out all the stops in his first filmic shot. What on stage was incredibly inventive and pioneering, appears merely overblown in the translation to film. Shirley MacLaine is fine, but she doesn't quite match the pizzazz that Gwen Verdon brought to the role. She was absolutely unique in the history of Broadway, a gifted comedienne, an adequate singer, and, possibly the best dancer ever to trod those Broadway boards. Mr. Fine, in his Amazon review, confuses Charity with her Fellini model Cabiria, who was, in fact, a prostitute with a heart of gold. Fosse chose to reinvent her as a dime-a-dance hostess, not because of any production code concerns, but because this better suited his conception. Charity, while offering her favors liberally to a plethora of loutish boyfriends, did not, and would never have turned tricks. Worth seeing and hearing, especially for the great Cy Coleman-Dorothy Fields score, but far from what it should have been. Try picking up the terrific Columbia cast album, and using your imagination. Fosse, of course, would do infinitely better in his next go behind the camera, "Cabaret".』
(Bob Fosse: Dance expresses joy better than anything else.) 『My love and admiration for Federico Fellini/Guiletta Masina's film Nights of Cabiria had stopped me for long time from seeing Sweet Charity, the adaptation of the musical based on the same story which was made into a highly successful Broadway show directed and choreographed by a multitalented Bob Fosse. I am a fan of Bob Fosse. I love all his films, musicals and not, but I was hesitant to see Sweet Charity the movie and I never had a chance to see the Broadway musical. Well, I finally did and I can say that nothing is wrong with transporting the same story to the different time, place, language, medium, and to use the different artistic tools. The story is the same; the films are as different as Rome and NYC or as Federico Fellini and Bob Fosse. Fosse's film should be judged on its own terms, and it has a lot of breathtaking scenes to enjoy, bright colors, outrageously stunning costumes (the work of incredible Edith Head), adorable and unbelievably cute Shirley MacLaine, Sweet Charity Hope Valentine, and the best of all - the dancing sequences to die for. Among them, splendid The Big Spender is perfection and the real treasure. Fosse's staging of the musical numbers is outstanding. The most memorable moment in the movie for me was stolen from Shirley MacLaine by Chita Rivera in Big Spender. Just watch Rivera's seemingly boneless arms, the right one around her head and the left one behind her back, the left hand on her right hip as she sings, "do you want to have fun, fun, fun?" For this moment alone, I like the film even if I see very well that it has some minuses, too. The first act between two intermissions was really good, and it includes the best dancing and singing numbers: "Hey, Big Spender", "The Pompeii Club", "Rich Man's Frug", and "If They Could See Me Now". After the second intermission the movie went over the hill. I believe that it could do without both intermissions. We are not watching the show at the theater, and the intermissions only took time. The "hippiest" "Rhythm of Life" scene was overlong, did not make much sense, and made me want to fast-forward it. I take it that Fosse wanted to experience with the camera movements and different techniques in his very first feature film which was a screen transfer of his Broadway Musical. This is the only explanation of his multiple slow-motions, stills, color/black/white and back changes that did not add anything to the film, just paused it with no apparent reasons. His next screen adaptation was timeless Cabaret, and he had improved his directing style dramatically. As the result, Cabaret has stayed his greatest achievement along with All That Jazz.
Coming back to the original tragic comedy "Nights of Cabiria", of all the characters Fellini had given life on screen, by his own words, Cabiria was the only one he worried about many years after the film was made. Of all the characters, I've seen in films, Cabiria is the one I often think about - whatever happened to her? Did she survive? Was she able to find love? As much as I like Shirley MacLaine/Charity, I did not worry about her future. She lived happily ever after - in both movie endings, theatrical and alternative.

I do recommend this to others, as it is a classic&a fun movie. Gwen Verdon was supreme on Broadray, Shirley MacLaine does her best to replicate her.』
(My mother-in-law loved it!) 『Requested by my mother-in-law she absolutely loved the movie. The songs were outstanding as you would expect from most high class musicals. And last but not least the price and prompt delivery were very much appreciated.』 『After several years as the hottest musical director on Broadway, Bob Fosse made his film directorial debut with this movie version of his Broadway hit, which was based on Fellini'sNights of Cabiria. Shirley MacLaine is terrific as the proverbial hooker with the heart of gold, one who is convinced that she will find the right man if she just turns enough tricks. They were not calvarymen, but actually mounted infantry. It's an exciting story. It is unfortunate that the author did not properly proof and edit his book, but it's well worth overlooking the typos. A movie (quite separate from this book) also tells the story of the Light Horsemen. 』
(Great war film) 『This is one of the best war movies from WW1. Historically very accurate, it has my favorite components of horses and war action. This movie centers on the true story of the Australian Light Horse, and their actions in the Middle East [Gaza] fighting the Turkish Army. It has a good character story, and the viewer gets involved with the film. Heroic men with the will to win. First rate.

(Buy this movie!) 『I've owned two versions of this DVD. One, produced in China, will work on a standard American DVD player without modification. The other, produced in Australia, requires a little tweaking of the DVD player due to the format, PAL instead of NTSC, and DVD region. The Dutch version should be similar to the Australian one.
Fortunately most DVD players are produced for multiple markets and easily convert between regions and format. The settings aren't in the manual, but are readily available on the Internet. Make sure your DVD player has this capability, though, before buying a foreign DVD and finding it won't work on your system.
The Lighthorsemen is a fictionalized account of the 1917 Battle of Beersheba in which Australian mounted infantry, "Lighthorsemen", used as cavalry succeeded in getting under the Turkish guns and capturing the wells of Beersheba, thus turning the tide of the war in Palestine and enabling Gen. Allenby to meet his goal of capturing Jerusalem by Christmas. The pacing at first seems a little slow, but the production quality and acting are excellent, and the final cavalry charge alone is worth the price of the DVD. Scenes from the movie were used in an episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, but inexplicably The Lighthorsemen was never released in the U.S.
History buffs will spot a number of interesting historical characters. These include:
Richard Meinertzhagen, a controversial British intelligence officer and amateur ornithologist, once described by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) as "a strategist, a geographer, and a silent laughing masterful man; who took as blithe a pleasure in deceiving his enemy (or his friend) by some unscrupulous jest, as in spattering the brains of a cornered mob of Germans one by one with his African knob-kerri." Meinertzhagen mislead the Turco-German force into believing the British attack would center on Gaza, not Beersheba. Part of this deception involved arranging for a satchel of documents to be "captured" by the Turks, an episode portrayed in the movie.
Baron Kress von Kressenstein defeated the British in the first two battles for Gaza, thus earning the Pour le Merite. One of the German officers in command of the Ottoman Army during the war, Kressenstein was described as "the inspiration and brain of the Turks in Palestine for the first three years of the war" by military historian and theoretician Liddell Hart.

(Being there.) 『While I love this movie, I don't think it is as good as the Aussie classic,`Gallipoli'. Having said that, it holds a very special place in my heart.
When `The Lighthorsemen' premiered in Australia in I think, 1988, I was in the process of interviewing a dozen or so local First World War veterans (they are all gone now). One, Douglas Ellibank-Murray, rode with the 12th Lighthorse Regiment during WW1 and participated in the charge at Beersheba. He told a fascinating tale of his time with the 12th after having enlisted as a young drover (cowboy), along with his horse.
While Doug` was happy to speak about his service and the assault on Beersheba in particular, he would not talk about what happened when the Aussies reached the Turkish trenches. This, despite my persistent if gentle probing. I suspect that things happened there that Doug` wanted left alone. There has been talk of Turkish soldiers having `surrendered' then firing on the Australians. It has been reported that some arbitary executions were carried out in response.
One of my life's greatest pleasure was to accompany Doug to the movie's local premier where he was, of course, guest of honour. While quite frail, he appreciated all the attention, especially from the young ladies present. He was still a charming and quite handsome man, not unlike the 19 year old, blue eyed and blonde haired drover who had enlisted back in 1915.
I watched Doug closely out of the corner of my eye throughout `The Lighthorsemen' and the only time he appeared to become animated was when the actual charge was underway; he was moving about quite a bit and I suspect, he was there again.
After the movie, Doug offered a number of technical comments including the fact that the Turkish trenches were inaccurately portrayed as relatively straight, when in fact they were of saw-tooth construction.
The fate of the `whalers' (the name given to the horses, most of who had come from the AUSTRALIAN State of New South Wales). Many were in fact `put down' rather than end up pulling a `gypoe's' (Egyptian) cart in downtown Cairo. Doug was in a bit of a state worrying about what would happen to his own beloved horse until approached by a Britsh officer who had admired the horse and wanted to take it to his next posting in India to be used as a polo pony.
After assessing the `Pommy' officer and his handling of the horse, Doug agreed. The officer wrote to Doug for many years telling him about the horse which was eventually retired and died of old age in India.
Doug Ellibank-Murray was a lovely man and then a living legend of that famous day in October 1917.』

(a television catchphrase popularized in the '50's and '60's by comedian Jackie Gleason) is an absolutely hilarious 1968 romantic comedy that takes place in the Italian Riviera, starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, with a supporting cast including Terry-Thomas, Paul Lynde, and Don Diamond. Garner plays a photographer who brings his wife and 17 year-old son (played by Donald Losby) along on a Paris shoot, with both husband and wife struggling to stay faithful under extreme temptation. The film was written by Muriel Resnick (from her novel, "The Girl in the Turquoise Bikini"), Garry Marshall, and Jerry Belson, and directed by Jerry Paris. Pat Williams scored the theme song and accompanying sound track.
The film was released in the early '80's on video for a short time before going out of print, which it has remained until recently re-released by the Warner Bros. Archive division for less than $20.00! The DVD is reproduced from a very high quality video print, and though it does not offer any extras, this does not take away from the sheer pleasure this movie still offers - 40 years later!
This film marks the return of James Garner after a one-year hiatus from filming. He had decided to take a year off from acting in 1967 to rest after several years of non-stop work. However, when he decided to return to work a year later, he learned that he was all but forgotten by the leading studios, hence taking the first decent script that came along. Lucky for us, it was a good script (Garry Marshall went on to produce the '70's television hit series, "The Odd Couple", "Happy Days", and "Laverne and Shirley" ) and both Garner and Debbie Reynold give it their all. The soundtrack was written by Pat Williams ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "The Bob Newhart Show", "Columbo", "Monk", as well as many television themes).

A word of caution to all teachers who plan to show this video to their classes, there are a couple of scenes that need to be addressed/discussed, (1) when the mother discusses her husband's infidelities, (2) when tequila is added to everyone's drinks in celebration of the event that's about to take place, (3) at the party, they show the kids toasting with beer. Though these rituals may be culturally acceptable and appropriate in some parts of the world, U.S. kids will need to hear clarifications, especially at the middle school level! It opens an authentic and beautiful window into the preparation for a quinceañera (mexican Sweet Fifteen birthday celebration/ceremony/rite of passage for girls) in Tijuana, Mexico. Ana Maria is the youngest of five girls who has prepared for this event. She gets a lot of advice and support from her family. Her family consists of her five sisters, her brother (the eldest),and her mother, Lili. Lili has endured and overcome a lot in her life: mainly the infidelities and subsequent abandonment on the part of her husband, and her struggle with her health; not to mention the economic challenge of being in her situation. The movie paints an excellent portrait of the dignity and nobility of this humble family . It also paints a true picture of the many ways that a young woman needs to prepare for this celebration; including the rehearsals with her 'chambelanes' (the young men who 'escort' her into her first waltz and present her to society - on their shoulders) and the classes that she attends at the church every Saturday. Adam Taub, the director handles the camera expertly. One does not detect his presence at all. One only sees the beauty and challenges of a Mexican town and family. He uses angles, light and color beautifully. Another marvel about this movie is that this is one of his first efforts. It was a student project for a university class. His ten or more prizes are well-deserved. This movie would be an excellent resource for any educational level, and it is also just about exactly a class period long (40 minutes). I am a teacher, and several ofmy mexican students cried from the nostalgia of seeing the beauty and worth of Mexico depicted here. My only observation would be that the students I have who are not familiar with this custom did not learn how a humble family like this could be paying for such an extravagant event. But for being his first movie, this is simply marvelous. Most people tend to regard Warner Brothers as the house of choice when it came to noir, but RKO cranked out some real doozies, too.
Dick Powell forever shed his wholesome, goody-goody image when he played hard-boiled Detective Philip Marlowe. Hired to track down the ex-wife of nutty stand-over man Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki), Marlowe's trail later leads him into an altogether more puzzling case involving a priceless jade necklace, the sultry second wife of a millionaire (Claire Trevor) and her lovely stepdaughter (Anne Shirley).
MURDER, MY SWEET is a complete ride from beginning to end. Although the plot is downright convuluted and confusing, the film is compelling largely because of Powell's performance and the snappy screenplay of John Paxton (based on the original novel by Raymond Chandler).
Audiences would have forever pegged Dick Powell for his tap-happy roles in Busby Berkeley musicals like "42nd Street" had the character of Marlowe not come along and allowed a new side of his incredible acting range to shine through. He's remarkable in this movie. Likewise this film also established radiant ingenue Anne Shirley (from "Anne of Green Gables" and "Stella Dallas") in a sophisticated new light, although her career sadly ended with this film. Claire Trevor, that perennial film noir femme fatale, doesn't disappoint.

(Noir with an endearing sense of nerdiness.) 『As far as film noir goes, this is it. The contradiction of Raymond Chandler's gritty gumshoe Philip Marlowe comes across at the hands of Dick Powell far more easily than it did with either Bogart or Mitchum (who was in a remake of this film, years later). Powell's performance of the detective is lighter than others, and though he certainly doesn't evoke the feelings of menace that other actors do, I can't imagine anyone but him playing hopscotch with the tiles of a stately home.
Mike Mazurki's turn as Moose Malloy is fabulous - a real-life ex-wrestler turned meathead-for-hire-under-false-pretences. If you want a great strangulation, he's the man.
So why only three stars? As a film this is a beautiful work - the opening shots of a blindfolded Marlowe, appearing as if in front of a firing squad, are gorgeous. There's a lot of expertly-crafted noir stereotypical setups here. But the story seems particularly convoluted, and to not hang together too well. It's forgiveable in a book where your mind fills in the blanks, but on the screen it seems that something is lacking. It definitely helps if you've read Chandler's original before tackling this one.
One thing that could be a spoiler but isn't but sort of is: watch out for the drug scene. It's one of the most breathtakingly good:bad pieces of acting and camerawork I've seen. It's so close to genius and failure at once that its inclusion makes viewing of this film necessary.』
(Confusing,But Love Those Wiscracks!) 『This is considered one of the classic film noirs ever made and some think THE film noir. In recognizing that before I had seen it, perhaps I was disappointed because I expected more. Yet, I still own this DVD and enjoy watching it about every 4-5 years. Why? Probably the cinematography and "Phillip Marlowe's" dialog.
What I found was a very confusing film, at least in the last third of the movie as everything started to be explained. It almost got ridiculous in the last 10 minutes when Dick Powell ("Marlowe") explained the whole story. He talked too fast and it was next to impossible to follow. I guess I will have to view this more often to understand it better, or find someone who can explain it for my feeble brain.
The best part of the film was the cinematography, which really comes to life on the DVD. Someone did a very nice job restoring this print for this disc. That, and the general dialog by Powell, were fascinating. You could make a short book with all the wise-guy remarks made by "Marlowe" in this film - a lot of great stuff.
I just wish they had made a simpler story and made it easier for the viewer to digest all the facts at the end. 』 『A collection of classic film noir. The very first thing I noticed when my box arrived, was that this product is made in the United States. I'm not irrationally against items that are imported, but I thought it was really nice to see a domestic product for a change.
My daughter went straight for the chair as soon as I had it out of its plastic... and jumped on it. And jumped, and jumped, and... whoops! Luckily, I was there to catch her. It's important to understand that this is really just a nice cover over a block of foam. It's deceivingly light, and although it doesn't tip easily from side to side, it does tip backwards easily if you don't have the back against a wall or heavy object.
As long as you're keeping an eye on your child when using the chair (if they have the inclination to be bouncy), this chair is great.

(Wondeful Princess Castle) 『We got this for our girls (ages 2 and 5) and so far, it is a big hit! It took a little while to put it together, but it wasn't too bad. We also got it for a really good price - I think around $65, so be sure to watch for when they lower the price. I love that it comes in 2 large pieces so that you can open it up and play with it that way. When we do that, then each of our girls has a "stage" to perform on. They love to go through the gold doors. And it is definitely big enough for all of us to get into. I would highly recommend it! Just make sure you have a big room to put it in. (Easiest Assembly Ever) 『I have never reviewed a product, but after assembling this item, I must. The instructions and color coded skeleton frame to assemble the castle is amazing. Very easy to put together, very easy. And with the castle in two sections, it can be moved from room to room. My wife and I had the castle waiting for our 3yr old in the living room Christmas morning, and then we easily moved it to her play room. I would highly recommend this castle to anyone with a small girl.
It is large enough to house my wife, myself and my daughter all at the same time, and I am no twig. It is durable material, with a metal frame. The doors were a bit bent from the boxing, but they straighten up nicely. The two towers that attach to the castle could use a firmer rod to puff them up, but my wife and I are thinking we fill it with cotton to fix it up.

(Fun, Simple, Very "Kawaii") 『First of all, all the craft ideas are very cute indeed. I was pleasantly surprised when I looked up the ISBN and found this book had an English translation.
I give this four out of five because of two things. One being that the instructions are slightly vague using mostly illustration (no step by step photos) and very little wording (my fist fortune cookie came out very, very flat). Nothing that a determined crafter couldn't over come.
Second, there are a lot of very Japanese and a few Chinese confections that the average American would have no idea as to what they are, so to me personally, they are less cute than the easily recognizable sweets like cake and donuts but that is personal preference.
I bought regular synthetic ( A.K.A cheap) felt and the first projects I made (fortune cookie aside) look good and I had no trouble with the felt being too weak. Some of the felt colors are hard to find, like mint green, but other than that the supplies are fairly cheap and easy to find at the usual craft stores.
If you want to make something super cute and can hand sew a bit this is a good book and the techniques are much faster to learn than other revenues of cuteness, like crocheting amigurumi etc., and with some supervision a craft that kids can enjoy and play with the end product. I'm glad I bought it!』

If you are a crafter, I am sure you have seen the adorable Japanese craft books on crafting blogs and sites on the Internet. People like you and I question if we can create a project from instructions written in Japanese. Some have been able to use these wondrous books and complete the projects. I did an article about a kit out of Japan and I had many questions and interest in the kits. Sadly the sources of these kits dried up and were not available outside of Japan. The article is¡°Felt Deserts¡± and the Japanese site is Patisserie Soleil.
I am sorry to make this intro for a book review so wordy, but I want you to get as excited as I am over this book¡°My Favorite Felt Sweets by Joie Staff¡± and translated into English by Yoko Ishiguro. This fabulous book cost less than one of the kits I mentioned above. Yoko has done a marvelous job translating this perfectly delightful book. The ideas and the sweets are perfection confections for you tocreate for gifts and yourself. The pictures are works of art and each project has a life size template and instruction sheet. You will not have any problem understanding these patterns. Each charming designs is a feast to the eye and although your mouth will water, please to not eat these littledelectable¡¯s. There are 106 different projects. Sheets of colored felt and basic sewing skills (and sometimes a little glue for the final, decorative touches) are all that are required to whip up these luscious-looking and guilt-free I have a friend who owns a bakery that makes delightful deserts like the ones in this book and I think that these sweets would create a charming display for her shop. I have scanned some of the delights in this book the temp you and I hope you do rush over to Amazon or the book shop of your choosing and pick up this book and then let us know what you think and please leave a review here.

There are two thicknesses of felt, for rolling and shaping you will want 1mm thick felt and for item such as cookies 2mm felt. I've only just started attempting to make playfood for my daughter, of course one can only have so many felt fried eggs and pancakes so when I saw this book I had to buy it.
The book itself is stunning, the photos will have you drooling and every turn of a page leaves my daughter yelling "mommy make me that one, oh and that one, can you make me that one too?"
Every pattern has a very detailed photo, a written instruction and FULL SIZE PATTERNS (photocopier needed, they are part of the book). There are also hints on which type of felt to use, how to sew the stitches (all are handsewn), etc.
For a beginning sewer all the detail is greatly appreciated. I've only attempted one little cake so far (awaiting a delivery of some wool blend felt, see below) and while I have a learning curve as I've never done hand sewing before it still came out pretty cute, the stawberry&whipped cream were especially easy and adorable.
Regarding the felt, while you can use the craft store variety be warned that it doesn't sew very well, or last very well. For the amount of effort these little pieces of art will require you'll want to invest in a wool blend or solid wool felt, which can be quite pricey... and some of the cakes use a great deal of wool so be awake that while adorable the creations will also be time consuming pending your level of experience and a bit pricey to make. That said, even if I never make anything else in the book I'm happy with the purchase, it's a gorgeous book to just look at!』 『"Japanese" and "cute," are todays hot buzzwords among crafters. As the rumor goes, Steinbeck got revenge by lampooning Campbell with the charactger in SWEET THURSDAY, Joe Elegant.
"Joe Elegant was a pale young man with bangs. He smoked foreign cigarettes in a long ebony holder and he cooked for the Bear Flag. ...He sneered most of the time, and except at mealtime kept to himslef in his little lean-to behind the Bear Flag from which the rattle of his typewriter could be heard late at night."
p. 133 "After lunch Joe Elegant read Fauna his latest chapter. He explained the myth and the symbol. 'You see,' he said, 'the grandmother stands for guilt.' 'Aint she dead and buried?' 'Yes.' 'That's a kind of a messy guilt.' 'It's the reality below the reality,' said Joe Elegant. 'Balls!' said Fauna." (Fauna's the madam of a cheap bordello.)
I don't regard this as one of Steinbeck's better books, but Ch. 23, "One Night of Love," stands out for how it conveys a deep understanding and compassion for humanity and the transformational power of love. Steinbeck rarely comes right out and talks about love, but he does here and in a way that proves he's given it a lot of thought. Here, Doc and Suzy (a woman engaging in prostitution out of desperation) are dining in a restaurant in Monterrey (they've not yet had sex):
"The shock of a necktie was leaving Doc. He looked across the table and smiled at Suzy and he wondered, What is beauty in a girl that it can come and go? This Suzy did not faintly resembble the tough hustler who had screamed at hm the night before. He raised the coctail glass. 'You're pretty,' he said. 'I'm glad you came with me. Here's to both of us.'
Suzy swallowed a gulp, held back her tears, and waited for the spasm to pass."
Suzy's a prostitute. Doc knows she is, yet he treats her as a lady, and she behaves like one. Suzy turns heads when she walks in the restaurant. The maitre d' defers. Doc wore slacks, tie and jacket. This isn't a paid transaction, either, it's a bonifide date, arranged by Fauna, Suzy's boss and a trusted friend of Doc's. The entire book is worth this one restaurant scene in this one chapter. 』
(solid sequel to Cannery Row) 『John Steinbecks Cannery Row is one of his masterpieces. Sweet Thursday the sequel is not as good but solid nonetheless. Sweet Thursday is not as episodic as Cannery Rom and it is more philosophical and a stronger romance element but this is not always good the romance and philosophy sometimes dont work. INparticular the romance seems forced. The novel maintains a lot of the humor of Cannery Row and one doesnt need to read Cannery Row to enjoy Sweet Thursday though it would not hurt to do so』

(A must read) 『Steinbeck gives birth to fully formed characters about as well as any modern author, and the characters in "Sweet Thursday" are some of the loveliest in literature. They all have their warts; they all have their peculiarities; they all expose a little heart sometimes as well. I'll bet you'll find a bit of yourself in this tossed-salad of humanity. I loved "Cannery Row" and Steinbeck doesn't miss a step in this sequel. You don't have to read "Cannery Row" first, but I'd recommend it. And if you liked "Cannery Row", you have to read "Sweet Thursday".』
(A Slice of Life, Small Town feel in every chapter) 『Sweet Thursday, Steinbeck's second part to Cannery Row, is in many ways an equal and worthy sequel and a pleasure to read. There is simplicity to many of the story's characters, but there is also a deep, symbolic, spirited prose in Steinbeck's writing, making even the simplest idea of life seem grandiose and thought-provoking. It's as if each statement takes on a larger meaning or is a microcosm for life.
Many of the same cast from Cannery Row returns to Sweet Thursday, including Doc, Mack, Hazel and the boys, and then the most relevant new character is Suzy. Suzy comes to town looking for work, and you can tell despite her denials that she carries some baggage with her. Eventually she takes up some work with Fauna and her girls in her brothel, but you can tell this just doesn't suit her. As much as the town takes an interest in Doc, Fauna takes an interest in Suzy, and she gets the urge to try to play matchmaker with Doc and Suzy. While much of the first half of the book deals with Doc speculating on life, Mack and the boys coming over to socialize, or Suzy's orientation into Fauna's business, the novel takes off a little more in the second half, when the town ties to figure out what is wrong with Doc (because even he doesn't know). The second half also focuses on Fauna trying to be matchmaker for Doc and Suzy.
Doc is really the character who drives the story, and many of Cannery Row feel indebted to him: "Doc was more than first citizen on Cannery Row. He was healer of the wounded soul and the cut finger...When trouble came to Doc it was everybody's trouble..." While everyone tries to decipher exactly what has Doc obsessing over writing the paper, and his frustration with it, Hazel, an unlikely hero, decides to try to take some matters into his own hands. While some of the story might be a little predictable by the novel's end, the mean by which Steinbeck is able to arrive there really is the talent in this novel.
Steinbeck has a way with prose, and seems to inject a symbolic nature in even the minutest moments. For instance, the very brief two scenes with the man who is called the Seer are important to the fate of both Doc and Hazel's later actions. There are also many beautiful descriptions of Northern California--Salinas, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Cannery Row. Steinbeck makes setting as significant as its characters. There is a small town feel to the novel, and whether Doc is lamenting over life with Mack with a drink of Old Tennis Shoes, or taking a walk over to his lab, there is a slice of everyday life in every chapter of Sweet Thursday.
