Both absolutely love them. I feel really good about giving these treats. I try to keep her treats healthy -- dried apricots, homemade dried chicken, etc. I am very comfortable with Sam's Yams.
I've tried the regular style of Sam's Yams and prefer the Bichon Fries style. A bag lasts longer. I found myself breaking the regular ones into pieces, so I found it easier to get the fries. I've looked at other brands of dried yams, but they have a really strange, fake-looking color to them. I will stick with Sam's. Haley has no complaints!』

Dear Art,
The 1890's and early 1900's had their Ragtime music. In the 1920's the popular sound was know as Tin Pan Alley. As a young composer George Gershwin was a major contributor to the Tin Pan Alley music genre.
This album is comprised mostly of Gershwin's Tin Pan Alley tunes with two exceptions; the most notable of these is a piece that he debuted in concert in 1925. It was a jazz/classical work that clearly shows its Tin Pan Alley roots. While it was panned by the critics of the day it is now considered to be one of the great works of classical music. It is his Rhapsody in Blue (track 5).
After listening to this album I now know that not only was Gershwin a great composer, he was a fantastic pianist. He had a terrific sense of rhythm anad he played around with the tempo of the music with wondrous effect.
I hope that you enjoy the album as much as I did. If not, at least you have a new coaster for your tea glass.

(Who better to play Gershwin than Gershwin?) 『I suppose when it comes right down to it, there is no better interpreter of a person's music than the composer himself. From that axiom alone, this CD takes on an educational and historical perspective that makes it well worthwhile. I say educational, because there can be no doubt that Gershwin is, well, a Gershwin authority. And although it is true that the recordings are a little "flat", especially when it comes to dynamics, the producers used the given technology (computers and a disk clavier) expertly enough to make the listener at least aware that these are no ordinary performances of Gershwin tunes. Particularly with Rhapsody in Blue, the movement through the range of emotions and tones is really quite stunning and exciting, setting itself apart from every other version you've ever heard. Even from there, the CD goes to Swanee, and it is hard not to feel you are back in the early jazz era, sitting in a parlor listening to a relative or family friend while away the hours playing "contemporary" music. Every song brings out some feature of George's playing, and while it may not be a tribute CD in that sense, it is east to believe that it was, in any event, possible George knew he was recording for posterity when he first sat and made the rolls. This is, in short, a very fascinating CD. I would think any student of American music could not do without it, and any jazz music collector could definitely build his or her early jazz collection around this recording.』
(A Caveat) 『Astonishing as it may be to hear "performances" by famous pianists and composers on the reproducing pianos, it must be kept in mind that the "expression" (i.e. dynamics) were all added later, that is, after the pianist recorded the roll, to a special "coding" channel on the margins of the piano roll. So these recordings may represent the original pianist's intentions in the area of tempo and timing, but not necessarily as regards dynamics.』

I am totally in love with his music! This cd is fantastic beginning to end! I kick back in the porch swing with my grandbabies and listen while they fall asleep. I think they love it too. We'll all have to move inside now that it is getting cold, but Joe Purdy is coming with us! I hate what I had to pay for the cd, but if it's no longer being produced, I feel lucky to have gotten it. My girls who are 40 and 28 and wild about Jack Johnson are also into the Julie Blue cd as well as joe's other cd's I purchased. There is a slight resemblence. but Joe's voice is more earthy. I am hooked for life. I don't think you can go wrong with this one, if you can still find it.』

Give it a try if you love Lost and if love simple, beautiful, relaxing mood music.』

Ironically, it was the late, great Fosse's film debut. More's the pity he simply didn't just provide a visual document of his original Broadway show; after all, it was Fosse who'd conceived the notion of a musical comedy based on Fellini's 1957 filmNights of Cabiriaas a vehicle for Broadway star Gwen Verdon (Mrs. Fosse at the time) and then put writer Neil Simon together with composer Cy Coleman and lyricist Dorothy Fields. Onstage, it simply worked great. The score produced two huge hit standards--"Big Spender" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now"--and proved that fantasies about hookers (even though Charity's called a "taxi dancer" here) with hearts of gold could provide mainstream entertainment years before Julia Roberts becamePretty Woman. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Everything's Coming Up Crabgrass) 『It looked good on paper: Powerhouse performer Bette Midler playing the most famous role in musical theater, directed by Emile Ardolino, the guy who turned "Dirty Dancing" into a national phenomenon. So what went wrong? The truth is, Midler simply isn't a good enough actress to capture the subtleties of as complex a character as Momma Rose. She's all big eyes and broad gestures, waving arms and manic mood swings; it's a community theater performance, going for the obvious at every turn. Is Rose manic and driven at times? Yes, of course; her father calls her a "crazy woman" in an early scene. But from her first entrance, Midler seems to have confused "powerhouse" with "bulldozer." She spits her lines out in rapid succession, with all the bawdiness with which she tells her famous Sophie Tucker jokes in concert. But where's charm, humor, sexiness; all the manipulatively feminine characteristics that make Rose such a seductive, seditious presence in everyone's lives? Rose gets her way not because she beats Herbie, June and Louise into submission, but because her dreams and desires are so strong they have no choice but to believe in them themselves. Auntie Mame is described as The Pied Piper, but it's an apt description of Rose as well. Midler's characterization is so grating, I can't imagine anyone doing much more than running in the opposite direction.
Unfortunately, with the exception of Jennifer Rae Beck's Dainty June and Linda Hart's Mazeppa, the supporting cast is average at best. And however skilled Ardolino is at directing the musical sequences, he completely fails to mine the humor and tension of Arthur Laurents's brilliant dialogue. The production values are first rate across the boards. Personally, I think June's acts are a little over produced; a certain vaudeville seediness would have made more sense. But the producers and Ardolino obviously adore the material -- who doesn't? -- and they've approached it with tremendous love and attention, so it's hard to fault their decisions.
Is this a better version than the 1962 film? Yes and no. It's a far more faithful adaptation, with Laurents and Sondheim's bawdier material intact, but I think the earlier cast is far superior. I know I'm not supposed to like Rosiland Russell because she wasn't Ethel Merman, but I love the performance; for me, Russell finds the perfect balance between Rose's fierce passion and her crushing vulnerability. And Karl Malden and Natalie Wood are superb, the latter fragile and extremely touching. So as a record of the show as originally written, this version is a must for all musical theatre fans. But if you're looking for the definitive "Gypsy" on film -- it ain't been made yet.』
(Campy, artificial, no improvement on the 1962 film, but still GYPSY) 『About the best you can say for Bette Midler's performance is that she does her own singing. And even some of that is sloppy and careless. Her acting is one-note, and she kills her best comedy lines by alternately gasping or screeching them. (Say what you will about Roz Russell, she at least knew how to deliver lines.) We know that Madame Rose's kiddie troupe is getting a bit long in the tooth, but Jennifer Beck as "Dainty" June looks fully thirty years old. Cynthia Gibb is a lovely Louise/Gypsy, but Natalie Wood "aged" more credibly in the admittedly flawed by classier 1962 theatrical film adaptation. Peter Riegert is too mousy as Herbie, so much of the point of a strong man continually knuckling under to Rose's steamroller whim is lost. (When he does stand up to Rose, he seems more petulant than assertive.) Stars are wasted in bit parts, and Andrea Martin unwisely and unsuccessfully tries to be funny as Mrs. Cratchitt (who was played hilariously "straight" in the 1962 film by Jean Willes.)
The production itself looks cheesy and low budget, and the bright crayon colors don't help. Even the lamb was cuter in the earlier movie!
Still, it's an earnest attempt. And with great material like that, it's hard to go far wrong. As many others have pointed out, the adaptation is faithful to the original. But oh, why didn't somebody think to do a second film of GYPSY in the 70s while Merman was still around to do it?』
(FAITHFUL TO ORIGINAL, BUT MIDLER MISSES THE MARK) 『I LOVE the musical GYPSY. I knew that the creators of the original Broadway musical, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents were extremely disappointed with the earlier 1962 film version with Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood. Fair enough. So this TV adaptation is scene for scene, word for word exactly like the stage play script. That is excellent. The score is also one of the most outstanding in all of Broadway history. So, we get the original script and score; but unfortunately, that's all we get. I watched this TV movie with great anticipation. My enthusiam deflated as soon as the less than divine Miss M started singing "Some People." I realized, with horror, that she was not portraying Mama Rose. Instead, she was portraying her idea of Ethel Merman portraying Mama Rose!! To make matters worse, her voice sounds extremely hoarse and coarse. Midler never makes the role her own. Surely, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and even Rosalind Russell did their own individual interpretations of Mama Rose. If Midler had only thought for a moment about Mama Rose, as the other actresses did, instead of Ethel Merman, she might have had a major triumph. I give Midler credit for giving her all to "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn", but the overalll production goes straight downhill because Midler simply doesn't "got the stuff." Curiously, Midler did this TV version just after Tyne Daly won a Tony Award for her performance in a Broadway revival. So, any TV version around that time period should have gone by rights to Daly. I wonder if somebody in Midler's camp pulled strings to make this a Midler Vanity production? I know Russell stole the original film from Merman because her husband was a powerful agent. Even I did not mind Russell over Merman. But Midler seriously misses the mark! I know a thing or two about Mama Rose. I saw Judy Kaye play the role in a brief run in Seattle in 2001. Kaye just blew the roof off the theatre. Patti Lupone is doing a limited three week run in NYC as I write this. Now, that's a Mama I'd love to see. If you want a real powerhouse Mama Rose, skip Midler and go with the CD recordings made by Angela Lansbury (1973 London Cast) or Tyne Daly (1989 Broadway revival) instead.』
(Great rendition) 『I was recently in a production of "Gypsy" and have grown pretty attached to it. I thought this rendition was done quite well, but I prefer the Baby June from the original film and I prefer the strippers from the original film as well. I like Bette's performance the best out of the other Mama Rose actresses from film and/or Broadway.
My only complaint was a small glitch in the DVD that causes it to skip. Maybe a spin on the Disc Doctor will cure it.』

Even though this was a television special, Ms Midler out performed, and out sang Tyne Daly, had more passion that Ethel Merman, and came neck to neck with Angela Lansbury in acting and singing departments. Great DVD!』 『This faithful broadcast TV remake of the classic Jule Styne/Stephen Sondheim musical looms as a career triumph for top-lined Bette Midler--and a bittersweet measurement of how far mainstream film and TV have retreated from the glories of musical theater. By the time Midler, as the mother of all stage mothers, observes, "I was born too early and started too late," it's only too obvious that the star's words are an ironic inversion. Had Midler been born earlier, she certainly would have reigned as a major musical comedy star. In a role form-fitted to Ethel Merman's brassy persona and brassier voice, Midler more than holds her ground musically and, especially, dramatically.
Titled partly for its source, the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee,Gypsyalludes as well to the itinerant life of her family. The show's focal point isn't the titular character, but rather her manipulative mother, Mama Rose (Midler), who channels her own frustrated dreams of stardom into Baby June, the curly blonde daughter who always eclipses sister Louise. The story follows Rose's machinations as she tirelessly reinvents June to defy the passage of time and even puberty itself. By the time Louise herself conquers the marquee as Gypsy Rose Lee, Rose's single-minded focus has alienated her long-suffering lover and agent, Herbie (a well-cast Peter Riegert), and surrendered to the inherent compromise of burlesque.
Midler's Rose reveals glimpses of vulnerability and a delusional monstrousness that provide a dark, gritty subtext. Studded with wonderful songs, the Styne/Sondheim score underlines those themes deftly, especially in Sondheim's multileveled lyrics. (Entertaining, family-friendly movie) 『My 4.5 year-old preschooler loves "The Ant Bully", and this is one of the few kid movies that I actually enjoy watching with her [we've watched it over 5 times now]. The animation is great, and the story too has a lot to recommend it. The story centers around a young boy, Lucas [Zach Tyler] who is constantly being bullied by an older and bigger neighborhood bully. Lucas in turn vents his anger and frustration on the ant colony in his yard. Typical of animated movies, the ants can 'talk' - there's Zoc [Nicolas Cage] a sort of ant wizard who experiments with a shrinking potion, his girlfriend Hova [Julia Roberts] who believes that "Peanut the Destroyer" aka Lucas is good at heart and that humans and ants can co-exist in peace. Lucas inevitably gets shrunk to ant size [well, a little smaller actually] and is sentenced by the Queen [Meryl Streep] to live and work in the ant colony, learning to 'become' an ant with the hope that Lucas will learn compassion. Over the course of the movie, Lucas learns that ants too have 'feelings' and that his actions of bullying the ants was not justified in any way - in fact, Lucas comes to form a real friendship with the ants.

Jason Patric plays a young man, former boxer who is emotionally damaged. He hussles his way into people's lives and then simply runs away. It does not take long before it is apparent that a woman and her friends have agenda on how to create enough wealth so they do not have to worry about the money during the old days. They are about to use ex-boxer as a tool to get to the goal. Erotic tension rises but so does desire for control. No one seem to be what they pretend to be and that is when film truly reaches its peak.
Jason Patrick gives a fantastic performance. He has a true swagger of a boxing champion. His eyes reflect his mood of the moment. At that point he taks over the big screen and the course of the movie. It is one of the films made in film noir fashion that draws audiences into destinies of the protagonists. There are no winners at the end of the story and that is the beauty of the movie.』

(pulp fiction) 『 Jason Patric is memorable as a drifting, washed up boxer who gets caught up as the patsy in a disasterous kidnapping scheme. Patric's only fault could be that he's a bit too pretty as he's a good actor and like others have said below it's a shame that he hasn't been seen in more films. Rachel Ward makes a believable alcoholic femme fatale but I couldn't help but think of Jessica Lange playing the part as the role seems tailor-made for her.
Over-all this was a great little film, very film-noir, so much so that it almost seemed strange to be watching it in color, so it didn't surprise me at all to learn from the other reviews that the story was actually from a 50's pulp novel of the same name. I can't speak for the novel but in the films case this title doesn't fit at all but it's good to see that it's not being forgotten.

I will say that all actors did exceedingly well in what can be very difficult roles to play. They all acted off each other in a believable manner. Bruce Dern was never seedier than he is with this character. Jason Patric and Rachel Ward also excel at thier characters. What is decieving here is the setting....somewhere in the southwest, desert area. Film noir is typically dark and shadowy but here there is lots of sunlight. It takes the focus off the setting and puts it on the plot, which I found to be an interesting twist and quite effective. In the heat, the emotions bubble over. Lust, greed, deception, lies, mistrust and paranoia all play out in layer upon layer and is accented by Jason Patric's character very effectively. For those who like film noir with a twist you will certainly like this little known gem. It is immediately captivating and magnetic. I don't know how I missed it on it's original release but certainly glad I caught up to it. It's a dream. The whole point of this great Thornton Wilder play (I read it in high school, too.) is that people don't appreciate life, they don't stop and smell the roses. They don't savor every moment of their lives. It's not really a happy ending since one of the main characters dies young, but the play is supposed to make you think and look at your life and enjoy every precious moment. I think since Emily doesn't die in this version, it lessens the effectiveness of the message of the play. Find another version that is true to the original is my advice.』

(Like the food in your favorite Chinese restaurant? This is your book!) 『Take it from me, this is the book you want to get first if you're intent on cooking Chinese food in your home. Parkinson provides a lot of helpful information and background in the beginning of the book you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Almost every recipe is something an American would love. It details which spices, vinegar, wines, sauces, etc. to buy at your ordinary grocery store. All you'll need is a wok after that (get the Lodge cast iron, it's the best and will last you a lifetime). Every menu can be adjusted to your tastes, meaning you can make them more authentic or you can further 'Americanize' them, as incorrect as that sounds. But if you're wanting food the entire family will enjoy, this is the book with which to start. THEN try others! Finally, visit [..] and watch some of the chinese cooking videos there. They will illustrate in real time many of these same menus, and there you'll see shortcuts and other tips that many recipe books take for granted, but don't bother to mention. __________________ TWO CAVEATS: (1) Within many menus, you'll see a measure of an ingredient (such as p.48) followed by the word "divided." For example, it will read: "2 tsp salt, divided." But you have to read the full process instructions below the recipe to know that you only add 1/2 tsp of salt first, and then sprinkle the rest on at the end during stir fry. (2) Nowhere is a batter recipe defined. You're told to deep fry chicken, etc., in batter first, but no batter ingredients are listed throughout. (I presume it's left up to personal choice.)』

The pictures are nice and instructions detailed and informative but the patterns are my big gripe. Some of the patterns came on paper but are printed double sided, so you've got to copy them before you cut! Other patterns are just in the book and you have to copy them then enlarge them to use them. The garments featured are cute but I expected more variety. Also some of the styles I like don't even have an actual pattern just a lame "go to the store and buy a vintage garment then sew it to another garment" WTF! Aggravating to say the least. Overall its a nice flip through kind of book but your not going to get much else from this book. 』

I see these items all the time at the thrift stores and can now give them a more serious look. But there is so much more to this book than remaking items - there are some incredibly beautiful and stylish patterns.
