Sesame Street(2005-06-14)
customer 's review (This DVD gets played almost every evening)
(Wonderful wind down)
(Great buy)
(SleepyTime)
(Nice, but...) I bought this DVD for our two parrots about a year ago. (They LOVE watching kid's movies!) I can tell it is one of their favorites because they become very animated when we play it. There are several really cute Sesame Street songs on this DVD, but one of our favorites is, "I Dance Myself to Sleep". When this song starts both birds get on the closest perch to the TV set and dance back and forth from foot to foot. One of them flaps her wings. I can't resist singing along when I hear it and dancing along with them.
One nice thing about this DVD is that it has the auto play feature which means it will start over on it's own when it's finished. That's always a big plus, not to have to go in and restart it each time.
Children without wings and feathers would likely be even more delighted than the birds with this sweet DVD. The Sesame Street characters are cute and the songs are entertaining. There is lots of music and color all the way through. It's a little bit lively in some parts but not so much so that I think it would keep children awake. Heck, I don't mind watching it and find myself humming the songs at different times. If we ever wear it out, it's one that would be replaced right away. Great, great. We limited our girl's viewing when we gave in at about 18 months. This is safe, quiet, and has real characters and good songs. The Big Bird hosted connecting parts are well done. Everything's low key, just as it should be for a wind down before sleeping video. A side benefit: if you've ever wondered about Bert&Ernie, the opening&closing pieces show how simple it is. Ernie is the one for kids to identify with and Bert is for the elders. Bought it for my 1 year old goddaughter, and she is loving it, her parents are too, very educative and entertaining My Girls love this DVD. The youngest will fall asleep on the second time around. It is a great help when the kids are still hyper from the days activities. As with most sesame street dvd's it's just a bunch of clips from the show strung together. If you have sesame street's recorded and a DVR, you could practically make it yourself... but who has time for that?? It's a nice show that my daughter likes. (West is still the best)
(Review)
(Good CD)
(God! I love Lucinda) This is a fantastic CD, one of Lucinda's finest! I have all her CD's. She has a great voice. This one is very mellow; soft, not as rocking as some of her other ones. After listening Lucinda Williams' album West I became an instant fan and bought a couple of more CDs right away. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road was nearly as good as West but somehow Sweet Old World appeared to be a bit too easy peace from an artist with this kind of talent. Lucinda Williams can do better. Don't get me wrong. Sweet Old World is not a poor album. On the contrary. But many of the songs are just beautiful "traditional" tracks without the soul tearing spices of songs on album West.
This was good but West is still the best. What can I say...her voice is great...I can listen to this over and over. Also check out "West" and "Car Wheels On a Gravel Road" Lucinda Williams has that southern rock, southern bluesy twang to her voice and music. Some of the songs are funky, but all of them enjoyable. You can't help but to start singing and moving your body. I recommend this CD if you what a little bit of country mixed with the blues, and a little rock-n-roll woven in. Lucinda Williams! On the surface her lyrics can sometimes seem so simple, but they always hit the mark.
Granted,Sweet Old Worldisn't the masterpiece that 1988'sLucinda Williamsis. The too-simple explanations of "He Never Got Enough Love" aren't up to Williams's mile-high standards, and the arrangements throughout are often so similar to that previous release's that the melodic differences here aren't as clear as they might've been. But when she raises her vulnerable cry to sing the three, pained perspectives on suicide that are at the heart of this album--the title track, "Little Angel, Little Brother," and "Pineola"--Williams's very humanity provides its ownproof that, while this world can indeed be cruel, it can also be oh so sweet.--David Cantwell Rerations < Sweet Old World >

(A truly great, no nonsense movie!)
("AN APPLE MADE OF ARSENIC.")
(smart, sharp, thrilling, and made me shiver)
(Holy Crap!!) The Bottom Line:
I'm not sure the ending strikes the right note, but even with a little hiccup Sweet Smell of Success is a fascinating study of human greed and cruelty that is extraordinarily frank and biting for a movie from the 1950s (or any era really); add in a pair of terrific performances by Curtis and Lancaster and it's a heckuva film. The very first movies, relied upon exaggerated acting and the actors' good looks. Then, along came the 'talkies' - and voices assumed great importance. With the advent of 'talkies' came the necessity to tell a good story - cinematically. Today, the emphasis is all on 'special effects', 'shock value', 'sex, and foul language.
For a relatively brief period between the coming of talkies and the modern cinematographic masterpieces, there was a halcyon period where excellently acted and expertly directed films were made of exceptionally good stories - often based on first rate novels.
'The Sweet Smell of Success' is one such movie. The actors are highly competent, the acting is superb, the story is great and the direction is first rate. 'The Sweet Smell of Success' comes together exceptionally well and is a first rate movie in all respects.
I would recommend it to anyone who wishes first rate entertainment. One of the problems with studying in film school, being a movie buff and getting older is that at some point in ones' life a man ventures into the video store, peruses the shelves and reaches the conclusion that he has seen every movie worth seeing. I thought I was getting there until a few years ago when I heard about and checked out "The Sweet Smell of Success". It was like that with "Chinatown", which I never saw until the 1990s and now consider one of the best films ever. "Sweet Smell of Success" holds up totally even though it is black-white, set in 1957. Burt Lancaster is J.J., based on Walter Winchell, who was a leading accuser of Communists in the media. Tony Curtis is a lackey publicist who lives on the whim of those who pay him to place items in various columns, which means he must grovel at the feet of clients and columnists. J.J. plays him like a fiddle. This has lines so vitriolic and perfect, Frank Manciewics in "All About Eve" is no more biting, and Bette Davis in "Eve" bites with the best of 'em. Lancaster just fills the screen with irony and sardonic, hurtful wit. Curtis fends it off with skill, it is like a fencing match. Anybody who has any desire to study dialogue must watch and memorize this. Everything is tremendous; the acting, the directing, the score, the noir shadows of New York at night. The music is unreal, lots of horns, filling the room with its wailing sobs of a corrupt, naked city. A love story between J.J.'s little sis and a musician (Martin Milner I think, who was in "Adam 12"), is the heart of the story. It is the one true, good thing, but J.J. is a monster. Perhaps Bob Towne had this in mind when he cast John Huston to be an incestuos father in "Chinatown". The inference, being the '50s, is much more subtle but it seems J.J. has the hots for sis and wants nobody to have her. He brands the musician a Commie, using sycophant secondary journalists to keep his own hands clean. Any chance for this dark one to have a happy ending goes down the tubes when sis, as much to torment her bro, kills herself. Curtis is utterly ammoral. His picture appears in Webster's next to the word ammoral. Many films have played off this theme. "Swimming With Sharks" (1996, Kevin Spacey, Frank Whaley) comes to mind. If this could be 20 stars I'd give it 20. I watched this film several months ago, and still the characters stand out sharply in my mind. Tony Curtis plays Sid Falco marvelously, as a man whose mind is quick with an excuse, an accusation, a bit of flattery, whatever the occasion calls for; this is a small, slick man, swimming around the ankles of larger and more powerful men. He knows he's an unscrupulous guy, but wants to work his way up the food chain. Sometimes you think he cares about going too far in his pursuit of fame and wealth - Curtis gives Falco moments of blank pause, expressions of troubled calculation - but he goes ahead anyway with every dirty plot he thinks will serve him well. As the cold colossus J.J. Hunsecker, Burt Lancaster seriously gave me chills; he delivers a brilliant and well-controlled performance. He's sharp and clean, with his powerful stature, squared jaw, and steely glasses; his speech is quiet and precise, and even his little gestures seem to send ripples through the room. I also quite enjoyed Susan Harrison as his sister, Susan, who's winsome and worn down, but still firm enough to try and get out from under her older brother's thumb; I liked how even though she's nineteen, she's got old, tired eyes, an older spirit.
I loved the screaming bright lights and deep shadows of New York City, the energy that ran through the film in electric currents. I enjoyed peering into every bar and jazz club and seedy room that Sid Falco pops up in. I liked how Susan and her beau, a steady and honest jazz musician, seem to speak in clear, round tones while Falco's and Hunsecker's dialogue comes out in a sharp patter, full of quick sharp stabs and quiet turns of the knife. Amidst the poisonous words, the lies and slander, the jibes and jokes that lead to uneasy laughter, you wait and watch for someone with integrity to (hopefully) prevail. I loved how the film shows us the power of words (even just a few words) wielded effectively, whether for good or - in a lot of cases - for the purpose of destroying people. I always sort of put off seeing this even though I've heard good things about it. I think it was because Tony Curtis is in it and the only thing I've ever seen him do were really bad introductions to some Alfred Hitchcock DVDs. In those introductions, Curtis fumbled his lines (which were often filled with errors) and so I assumed he was the worst actor in the world. I should kick myself.
This movie is not only one of the best "noir" films I've seen but one of the best movies I've ever seen PERIOD.
It's included in the noir category despite it not being a crime drama at all. The reason for this is it's shadow-filled cinematography and its theme of corruption. According to this movie, human beings are bleak, cold-hearted creatures.
It's about a Broadway columnist (played by Burt Lancaster in one of his best roles) who manipulates everyone he comes in contact with. He is one of the vilest, cold-hearted bastards I've ever seen in a movie because he's just so real. This isn't a noir hit-man in a fedora hat. This guy could be real and I'm sure some of us have met or will meet someone like him. Tony Curtis plays a bastard publicity agent though you sort of feel bad for him even despite his faults. He's the "protagonist" and we are told the story through his eyes. There are a couple of characters who have integrity and are not so corrupted but they only count as victims of the manipulation.
The acting is top-notch. Both Lancaster and Curtis had me in awe throughout the whole movie. Usually movies about "show business" don't interest me all that much but this movie was fascinating. This is dark look at NYC life in the 1950s. I recommend it with every noir-loving bone in my body.
A classic of the late 1950s, this film looks at the string-pulling behind-the-scenes action between desperate press agent Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) and the ultimate power broker in that long-ago show-biz Manhattan: gossip columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster). Written by Ernest Lehman and Clifford Odets (who based the Hunsecker character on the similarly brutal and power-mad Walter Winchell), the film follows Falco's attempts to promote a client through Hunsecker's column--until he is forced to make a deal with the devil and help Hunsecker ruin a jazz musician who has the nerve to date Hunsecker's sister. Director Alexander MacKendrick and cinematographer James Wong Howe, shooting on location mostly at night, capture this New York demimonde in silky black and white, in which neon and shadows share a scarily symbiotic relationship--a near-match for the poisonous give-and-take between the edgy Curtis and the dismissive Lancaster.--Marshall Fine Rerations < Sweet Smell of Success [VHS] >

customer 's review (Excellent movie - Help it get to DVD!)
(Welcome to Xanadu, Christabel)
(This is a great movie)
(bring back Linda Blair!)
(sweet hostage) Sweet Hostage first aired in 1975 as a TV movie. Sheen's energetic, lyrical performance captured the imagination of a bookish 12 year old who had a few things in common with Linda Blair's lonely tomboy, Doris Mae. The movie engendered in me a life long love of the well spoken word, a fondness for the poetry Blake and Coleridge, and a terrific crush on Martin Sheen.
There are plenty of other reviews here which tell you more about the quality of this touching movie - read them. And if you think you'd like to see Sweet Hostage (which is notoriously hard to find on VHS and doesn't seem to exist legitimately on DVD) or like me you just need to own a copy of this movie so you can watch it again and again; You can vote cast your vote on the TMC website to have Sweet Hostage transferred to DVD. If enough people vote; perhaps next time a fan does a search on "Linda Blair", or "Martin Sheen" Amazon will direct us right to the DVD offering for "Sweet Hostage "

Here's an example of the small art film that used to be made for TV. Thoughtful&moving, it's a reminder of a time when madness was a symbol for freedom&imagination, rather than serial killing&other horrors. No, it's not completely "realistic" -- but that complaint is utterly beside the point. It's about breaking free of the everyday world, stepping outside the social roles imposed on us, and realizing more of our potential. It's also a tender love story, one that certainly wouldn't be allowed on TV today! Martin Sheen is excellent, as might be expected, but Linda Blair holds her own with him. It's a shame she didn't get more roles like this one; her acting career might have been very different. And if the story gets a touch too precious at times, that's forgivable. I'd much rather see a film take that risk, instead of simply playing it safe.
Like previous reviewers, I'd love to see this released on DVD, preferably with commentary by both Sheen&Blair. Until then, cherish that fragile VHS tape! You won't see a story like this one being made today, and more's the pity. Recommended for anyone with a dreamer's heart&imagination. Loved this movie and would like to see it on DVD.
For the Sellers of this movie........
Even although this is a great movie and would recommend it to anyone I Would not pay or recommend anyone to pay $32 or more for it on VHS.... I would however pay $32 for it on DVD. I loved this movie in my youth. I wish they would release it on DVD. Does anyone remember "Sarah T: Portrait of a teenage alcholic" she made around the same time aired on television, also starring Mark Hammill? I loved that movie as well. I guess Born Innocent is the only one available on DVD because of the controversial scene that caused such a stir back in the early 70's. I would like to see this come out on dvd, i also think it would be a great sealer on the market if marked at a reasonable price where every one could afford to buy it , have not seen it for a long time but not by choice its one of linda blairs better made movies i do not care for many if any of her other movies please put this on dvd thanks for listening to the consumers thats if you take our sugestions.

customer 's review (Twisted Sisters)
(Great suspense!!!)
(Does your sister have issues like this?)
(DePalma's Psychotic Siamese Sisters...)
(Siamese Twins with a French-Canadian Twist) Certainly worth watching, and has some very riveting moments. As very low budget horror films go, it's pretty decent, but it hasn't aged particularly well as a film. Margot Kidder's performance is the best part of the film. I find the homage to Hitchcok wearing at times, and if you compare this to Hitch's contemporary film, Frenzy, De Palma is clearly very much the apprentice. Even so, there's more than enough creepiness to go around here and it's fun to watch, which is a lot more than you can say for many other films. Awesome thriller. Will remind Hitchcock. Losely based on some true facts. Has some intense scenes mid-way when it its all clear to the viewers. Terrific start. End may not be the best. A Must watch, buy if you can view thriller again and again.
In the end, a quality work. The way the story unfolds itself is one of the best I have ever seen.
This is a great film! Although the acting is a bit rough for a few characters I found myself drawn into the story line. We have Danielle Breton (Margot Kidder) has a one-night stand with a black TV-game show player. The morning after, he is killed by Danielle's psycho twin sister, Dominique Blanchion. But Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt), an aspiring journalist, sees everything from her flat across the street. Things get even uglier when the journalist starts following Danielle and his strange ex-husband, Dr. Emil Breton (De Palma perennial weirdo Bill Finley). What dark secret lies behind this murder? Uh? Of course, nobody really seems to care about the plot - De Palma plays the genre rules, twisting every second with his split screen techniques and neat suspense touches. There is a "dream" sequence, some blood, a hideous scar, drugs and a birthday cake.
Sure, the movie owes more than a passing nod to Psycho (Collector's Edition) and Rear Window (Collector's Edition)specifically, but De Palma's exhilarating use of that split-screen technique as well as Margot Kidder's creepy performance add up to a genuinely frightening experience. The "peeping tom" opening is brilliant. The humor doesn't lessen the shock, but rather enhances it by keeping the audience continually caught off guard. He takes the most vulnerable and receptive of human reactions--laughter, fear, and anticipation--and pushes them to their extremes until the audience is caught up in giddy bewilderment. You don't know what the director is going to pull next, so you can't prepare yourself.
De Palma is nothing if not a visceral filmmaker, and in his comfort with the comic and the horrific, he resembles Roman Polanski more than he does Hitchcock. Taking into consideration their mutually varied filmographies and how they've been received, it seems a more apt comparison. The one major difference is that Polanski has a deep sense of the tragic, and almost always ends on that note. Not so much De Palma. In the final scene in Sisters, we find Charles Durning's private dick, who had all but disappeared from the movie, high up on a telephone pole dressed as an electrician, dutifully watching a couch through a pair of binoculars. The movie is over in every way--the blood has been shed, the mystery has been solved, and the suspense is gone--except that it apparently isn't. De Palma wants to leave us with something else. So we have Durning waiting to see who comes to get the couch. This could well be that Shock Recovery Period that the movie posters promoted. This was another great film that was highly recommended by Chris and the one only #1 Depalma fan R.A. Bean which I greatly enjoyed.
In 1973, after spending the last few years making great independant films like "Murder a La Mod", "The Wedding Party", "Greetings", and "Hi, Mom!", Brian Depalma was put on the map as the new Master Of Suspense with his first 'mainstream' film, "Sisters", a very demented, deranged, twisted, psychological horror film that rivals even the best of todays top thrillers. He uses themes that would continue throughout his career in this film: The doppleganger, split personalities, multiple personality disorder(s), mistaken identity, voyuerism, and horrorfying psychological madness and muder and mayhem. And sinister satire! The film starts as a game show "Peeping Toms" is being played out before a live audience. The contestant on the show, a young black man named Philip Woode (Lisle Wilson), and the guest 'prankster', a model named Danillele Breton (Margot Kidder in her BEST performance ever). After the show is over, Philip recieves a gift card which is a ticket for two to have a free dinner at an African themed restaraunt, and for Danielle's participation on the show, she recieves a very nice set of steak knives (establishing sterotypes and irony in one set piece). They attend dinner together, where they are followed by Danielle's ex-husband, Emil Breton (William Finley), but he is removed from the restaraunt; so they have a very nice dinner together, then go to Danielle's to spend the night together. As they are making out, we are shown a very large, ugly scar on Danielle's thigh.?.?. The next morning, there is loud yelling from the next room, someone calling out "Danielle! Danielle!" in a very impatient voice that awakens Danielle, who goes to respond, having a conversation, one person speaking French, and Danielle in French-English (the accent she has throughout the entire film); then coming back and telling Philip that it was her sister, well, her twin sister, Dominique, and she is upset because today is their birthday, and she wanted to spend the day together, and is upset that Danielle has a man in the apartment. Philip gets dressed, and goes to the local pharmacy for Danielle to pick up a prescription for her, and in the meantime he drops by a local bakery and buys a birthday cake for the twin sisters, Dominique and Danielle. When he returns to the apatment, he is murdered in a very shocking scene that I will not detail for I don't wanna spoil it for people who haven't seen the film. From a window in a buiding next to Danielle's apartment building, a young female reporter, Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt) witnesses the entire muder in an awesome split screen scene that DePalma first employed in this film; and, in which he uses effectively in a few more scenes. She calls the cops, there is an investigation, but no body is found, but this is when Grace starts noticing signs and/or clues that Danielle may have a sister, a TWIN sister, and all is not what it appears to be; so, she hires a private detective, Joseph Larch (Charles Durning). He finds a folder that has files on the Blanchion twins, an infamous story about two Siamese twins who got seperated about a year before, so Grace investigates the story further by seeking out the top reporter that was there during the operation, Mr. McClennon (Bernard Hughes), who tells Grace that Dominique died on the operating table.?.?.?. And, this leads Grace, who in her (God bless her heart) naivete, and stubborness, and her drive to someday be a 'respected' journalist, on a search that ends in a psychological/sinister/demented/deranged/almost psychodelic/hypnotic/kaleidoscopic/bloody climax that will leave you utterly stunned, breathless, and scared witless! And, the final twist at the end, where a particular character is watching a particular item through binoculars until the cows (literally) come home is awesome and utterly hilarious, but also very bone chilling all the same. Of special mention: DePalma cast Jennifer Salt's real-life mother, Mary Davenport as Grace's mother. One of the cops was played by Dolph Sweet, who is remembered for his role on the tv sitcom "Gimme A Break". And, the awesome score was done by the great Bernard Herrmann, who DePalma got to come out of retirement to do, and who went on to score DePalma's "Obsession". And, DePalma originally wanted to get bigger name stars for the roles of Grace and Philip: He wanted to get Marlo Thomas to play Grace, and Sydney Poitner to play Philip, but due to budget constraints, and/or other reasons, that never came to fuition, which in my opinion is a good thing, because what may have appeared as a good idea on paper, I don't think would have worked as well on screen. Jennifer Salt (who had been in DePalma's "The Wedding Party" and "Hi, Mom!") was born for this role, and Lisle Wilson gave a very topnotch performance as the 'male Janet Leigh'. This is a very great mixture of genres, mainly horror and satire, and something that will stick in the recesses of your mind and stay there for days and days to come, and haunt you on a very deep scale. As one reviewer on here put it, this isn't DePalma's first film, but in many ways, it is the first 'Brian DePalma film'. Easily in the same league as "Psycho", "Halloween", "Suspiria", "Rosemary's Baby", "Repulsion", and referencing such greats as "Rope", "Rear Window", "Psycho", and "The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari", this is a very timeless classic masterpiece that will rival anything in its genre that you've ever seen! And, why Margot Kidder didn't have every award there is thrown at her for her performance is a crime, for she is show stopping in this. Currently, there is a remake of this trying to get thatrical disribution...AVOID it!!! This is the ONLY version of "Sisters" you'll ever want and/or need to see! Thank you&happy Halloween! ;-) Watching the 'Special Features' section on Siamese Twins on the DVD, they make it look like the director wanted to pay homage to Siamese Twins in general. However, this film is far from it. If you always thought of Siamese Twins as sort of freaky/weird, then heres your chance to think of them as functionally delusional and hysterically dysfunctional as well. In this case, this works for the movie, but in real life does a disservice to the noble, yet troubled life plaguing many real life Siamese Twins.
Margot Kidder (with the most over the top Quebecois accent this side of Montreal) is wonderful in a role that doesn't shy away from showing her in an unflattering physical light. It is clear that this is a woman whose charms are enhanced by make-up alone, and she plays this card to the hilt. As one half of a Siamese Twin couple that were surgically separated, Margot plays Danielle, a mentally disturbed young woman who takes on her sisters' persona once her sister died on the surgical table during their separation process. Due to this, Danielle becomes a pathological killer with a penchant for blood, but of course when she 'comes to' she can't remember any of it. How convenient.
The director deals with all sorts of interesting issues here. Push through the intelligent script and you'll find a subtle irony in how the movie deals with racism (still very perceptible in 1973 when the movie was shot), to the bleakness of modern urban and suburban life, where 'Peeping Toms' are virtually you and I (better executed in the recent 'Disturbia').
The final shot of the film alienated many core fans of the movie to that point, as it seemed to many viewers as nonsensical and idiotic. Its sort of funny, actually, and reduces the movie from being a serious crime-noir to becoming a more pedestrian comedy. This minor flaw apart, the rest of the film plays out wonderfully. The now-famous 'split screen' effect first found its roots' here (yes, it was done in other films too, but this was the first time so much of it was used, and to great effect, even with overlapping dialogue).
The posters and adverts for this portray 'Sisters' as a companion of sorts to another thriller - 'Pscyho'. While I wouldn't go that far, this movie does have its scary moments and charms. To its' credit, I can say that I was never once bored or irritated by its' slow and languid pace. And even though Margot Kidder is not a great actress, the director knows exactly how to use her. Especially disturbing is her epileptic seizure once she commits murder in her bedroom. You will definitely be quite moved by this scene, one way or the other.
"Sisters" is a cinematic achievement that may or may not work for you. If you like most of DePalma's later work, don't even compare this to those films as its so very different. Its also quite dated compared to other films of the same genre from the same era. However, you cannot deny the slick direction, cool dialogue, and smart performances from all the leads (especially the nosy reporter neighbor).
Criterion's DVD is a fine transfer as always, though not as great as some of their other more recent transfers. I had a huge problem with the extras here, though, as most of them seemed an afterthought. For example, the feature on Siamese Twins is not a documentary or anything - just scans of an article from a magazine. I could get this off the Internet if I wanted to. Can't really call this a special feature. The poster section is mildly interesting, but since they're mostly the same poster in different lettering, theres really not much watchability in this regard.
For both the film and DVD, I give a generous three stars. This movie may not be a classic, but its a fine addition to the crime-mystery genre nonetheless. And while this is a let down in terms of extras (by Criterion standards - I had the same issue with their edition of "Le Samourai"), the film is good enough to stand on its' own. Go into this one with minimal expectations, and it makes fine viewing for a lazy Sunday afternoon. And try not to take the other five star reviews on this page too seriously. Its not a five star film by any means.
Hope this helped! Sistersis not Brian De Palma's first film, but in many ways it is the first Brian De Palma film, or at least the first to reveal (and revel in) his affinity with Hitchcock. A pre-SupermanMargot Kidder struggles with a French-Canadian accent as an aspiring actress whose one-night stand leads to a homicidal morning-after. Jennifer Salt is a reporter with more moxie than tact or skill who sees the killing from her apartment window across the way. When the police fail to turn up any evidence of the crime, Salt investigates with a private eye (the hilariously relentless Charles Durning), uncovering the secret story of a pair of Siamese twins and a weaselly, stalker doctor. It's a mystery simmering in a stew of voyeurism, guilt, sex, and obsession. De Palma borrows fromRear Window,Psycho, andVertigo(as well as Roman Polanski'sRepulsion), and composer Bernard Herrmann quotes from his own Hitchcock scores (notablyPsycho) for the unsettling music, but the result is more original than you might imagine. Laced with dark humor, inventive technique, and impressive technical precision (the split-screen sequences are breathtakingly effective), De Palma flexes his cinematic muscles with thrilling results, right down to the mordantly wry conclusion. De Palma graduated to big-budget thrillers, but this modest little production remains one of his sharpest, slyest, most engrossing films. Long available only in pallid video transfers, the Home Vision/Criterion letterboxed restoration is bright, clear, and beautiful.--Sean Axmaker Creepy slasher flick featuring Margot Kidder(Superman)as a psychotic twin with a brand new set of knives. Now with its own cult following,Sisterswas the film that put director Brian De Palma(Carrie, The Fury, Dressed to Kill)on the map. A reporter witnesses the murder of a young man inside a neighboring apartment. When the body doesn't turn up, the reporter does some digging of her own and winds up immersed in the secret lives of famous Siamese twins. Replete with gore, excellent use of split-screen photography, and cameos from Olympia Dukakis(Moonstruck, Steel Magnolias)and Charles Durning(The Sting, The Hudsucker Proxy), De Palma's first tribute to Hitchcock also features a spine tingling score from Bernard Herrmann(Psycho, Vertigo). (A good old Baseball Movie) The quality of the product was great, and the speed with which it was deliveried was exceptional. Good entertaining movie for the whole family whether they enjoy baseball or not. I would definitely recommend it. Great Tom Selleck movie... funny moments when he is in Japan... I recommend this movie... This is a silly baseball movie from the early 90's and I love it. Anytime an actor can pull off a sports movie by actually looking like he/she knows how to play the game it's always a good thing. The good news here is that Tom Selleck and Dennis Haysbert get the job done. A fun and good way to start the ball season. It is good movie for kids and has a wonderful suprise ending. And, of course, its a great story that includes baseball! An aging new york yankee gets traded to a team in japan and lets them all know how he feels about it. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (Little acknowledgement)
(Period Movies) A good storyline of how gambling can ruin a person. Wonderful scenery and backdrop for the story This is one gorgeous production that takes the viewer back to the sights and sounds and ethos of Victorian England, even if the film was shot in Ireland, according to the end credits. The details, even those in the background, are impeccable.
Moreover, it is faithful to the novel. One reviewer for Amazon criticized the bittersweet ending, but the denouement was Charles Dickens' own. I thought everyone knew the ending--as everyone knows how "Gone With the Wind" turns out--or "Hamlet" or just about any other standard work of fiction. Knowing the ending surely does not ruin the movie or book for any knowledgable viewer or reader.
The acting is perfect and should have garnered every award for the year this was made. The portrayals of the grandfather, Little Nell, Quilp, his lawyer, etc. are not to be forgotten. Dickens' greatest talent, in my view, as his ability to create memorable characters, such as, Miss Havisham, Fagin, Uriah Heep, Barkis, Mr. Micawber--and lest I forget, Little Nell.
I cannot think of a single thing amiss with this production. I could find some fault with Dickens' novel--too many coincidences, for example--but not with the film. It is a treat to the eyes and ears. I never thought I would enjoy this story as I did when I watched this version of the movie... I had never read the book in its entirety, but I did know the story - having been brought up reading Dickens and Shakespeare at school. I never thought I would enjoy Mr. Quilp, but I did, and I wish I could shake Tom Courtenay's hand - I thoroughly enjoyed Quilp - he was the best of all!! I felt sorry for him in the end. Kit was a delight. The scenery was beautiful, the sets excellently put together.. I can't impose on people that the size of the book should not alarm them, as originally these were written in weekly sections. I do think we should all read at least one of Charles Dickens' books (apart from A Christmas Carol) and get the feeling of Victorian England and its effect on children especially, as Mr. Dickens so keenly addresses and describes.. The grandfather was too blind to see his grandaughters values. He had little acknowledgement of this and only thought of himself. His own greed for money and sickness for gambling made him a selfish old man. Like all Dickens stories, this makes you realize how lucky you are to live now, but with a happy ending it's also enjoyable to watch. There's romance and the sense of good eventually triumphing over evil. Studio: Platinum Disc Llc Release Date: 06/07/2005 Run time: 188 minutes Rerations < The Old Curiosity Shop >

(Raffi is a Blessing.)
(Great!)
(Interactive and fun)
(Truly the gentlest man for children) I love this Raffi CD! My 19 year old daughter loved it when whe was little, My 8 year old nephew loved it when he was little, and so I purchased one for my one-year old nephew! We recently purchased Raffi's Concert for our 18 month old boy, after we rented it for a while and reluctantly had to return it. Elijah, our son, was completely thrilled with Raffi and is totally addicted now. Raffi is light-hearted and his songs are all so sweet. It is so refreshing not having to worry about what my son is watching on TV, he chooses Raffi over any TV program. We walk in the door and Eli will go straight to the TV and start pointing to where we keep the DVD and say "affi" "affi". It is precious and Raffi will last through the years...suitable for all kids. We love Raffi. These are very cute songs you can sing together! The children love the motions that go with the music. They will snap, stomp, clap on cue with Raffi! This DVD is great for children. When I was younger and used to babysit, the kids I watched used to love this concert on a VCR tape. We watched it so much that I grew to love it too. Now, I have a son of my own and I knew that the Raffi concert was something I wanted him to watch. We started watching this when he was only 4 or 5 months old and now at 12 months, he is totally in love with the music. He laughs, squeals, gets sleepy and is completely entertained. Though it was made in the 80's, it is timeless! I also love the other two concerts, but this one is the best. Raffi is the type of person who just wants every child in this world to be happy. He delights everyone with his infectious songs and warmth, no matter what the age. I never mind sitting down to watch with my toddlers because I actually LIKE the songs, just as much as they do. We also listen to the CDs which helps them know the words. This was made in the 80s so the audience members have clothes that are a bit dated, but it matters not at all. Your kids will love him. No cartoon images, and no sudden camera movements.
Concert performances of children's songs. Genre:Music Video - Pop/Rock Rating:NR Release Date:20-SEP-2005 Media Type:DVD Raffi is something of an icon in the world of children's music, and it's no wonder when you see his folksy, expressive style and his talent for inspiring young children. This concert video features Raffi and his guitar on a simple stage before an audience brimming with enthusiastic young faces. Raffi sings a wonderful mix of 18 classic and original songs, many fromThe Singable Songs Collection, while beaming audience members clap, stomp, gesture, jump, and thoroughly enjoy themselves. Several pieces are performed a cappella, and there are even solo segments on kazoo and "air trumpet." So what's the best thing about Raffi? You'll have to decide whether it's his uncanny appeal to children, the comical lyrics in his original songs, his simple yet expressive treatment of well-loved children's songs, or the fact that parents can listen repeatedly to his music without losing their sanity. Whatever your choice, be assured that this wholesome video will completely captivate your child for a full 45 minutes. (Best Ever)
(It works) With long curly hair I find that this really helps with definition. It also adds a little luster to my highlights. Very good for frzz, especially in damp weather. Have loaned it to friends with all hair types: no complaints, only raves. If your hair is thick, product helps with volume, but if you have fine hair, then it ends up flat and greasy. buyer beware. know your hair type. I absolutely love this product!!! When I ran out of the small texture balm WEN sent me in my collection I tried to find something that would work as well as this product...needless to say I spent a lot of money and went through a lot of different products only to be very disappointed! This texture balm makes my hair look shiny and healthy. I get a lot of compliments on my hair these days and I swear it's because of this product!---Thanks Amazon for carrying this line! This is the best texture balm I have ever used. It is easy to use, leaves my hair feeling so soft while still keeping it in place and lasts a long time. This product i will not go without. I love the WEN Products, they do work Create a sexy disheveled look or an edgy spiky style for short hair or a relaxed and loose look for longer tresses with this versatile finishing stick pomade. Many fine hotels in Greece serve caprice wafers to their guests. Great with morning coffee or after dinner. Deliciously crisp and sweet.

customer 's review (A Peach of a Chutney) Neera's is my favorite brand of mango chutney, and Neera's peach chutney is also outstanding. The peach chutney has the same chunky texture, balance of spice and sweetness, and rich flavor as the mango chutney. Although the two chutneys are not spiced the same, they are close in flavor. For that reason, I would choose the mango over the peach if I wanted to stick with one flavor. If you want a peach chutney with a lighter peachier flavor, I recommend the Virginia Chutney Company. (Love my TRIPOLEY)
(TRIPLE the fun for card players!)
(Great for all generations!) My parents use to play this game in the 60's. It's fast and fun. I have loved this game for years, my parents have the old version with the plastic mat that lays out on the table. We played this New Year's Eve with our neighbors and they enjoyed it too. Tripoley game is a lot of fun for family/friend get togethers. Combines three different card games and can be a blast. Tripoly has obviously been around forever (thus the 75th Anniversary Game) and I think the reason it has lasted is that it has multiple ways to play (from simple to more complex), can include a little lighthearted gambling (making for fun competition) and can be enjoyed by a large age group.
As a kid, I remember playing this with my parents and everyone of every age enjoyed it. It is just the same now that I am the Mom! I have kids ranging from 11 to 20 and adults that enjoy playing it too....from Mom to Grandma...so it still holds up as a good old-fashioned family card game.
Our family loves board games and card games too and this fits in perfectly. I consider most games educational in some way, especially if they involve counting and/or strategy and this includes both. If you have ever loved playing Rummy or simple Poker and other traditional card games I think you will enjoy this extra twist! This is a great game and excellent quality. We play it with three generations and it's simple to learn and a lot of good, old-fashion fun This special-edition game celebrates 65 years of Tripoley, a long-time favorite for parties or at-home fun. Tripoley combines the strategy and skill involved in hearts, poker, and Michigan rummy. One game of each constitutes a "round" of Tripoley. The group decides the number of rounds in each game before play begins. After all the rounds have been played, the player with the most chips is the winner. Designed for 2-9 players. Includes a rotating game tray, poker chips, and playing cards. This special-edition game celebrates 65 years of Tripoley, a long-time favorite for parties or at-home fun. (Puzzle Is Okay)
(Taught my daughter her shapes in a day)
(Another great product)
(Goog Idea but bad design) This product is very good for learning shapes. My daughter loves this product. I would highly recommend this product to a friend. I was so excited when I saw this puzzle online and didn't even realize it was a sound puzzle until I got it in the mail. Quick Shopping :) Anyway so I was very excited and put in a battery. The puzzle has sturdy pieces but the board is okay looks pretty cheap. The other thing I am not to crazy about is the puzzle will say incorrect shapes and will talk when no one is around which is pretty scarey if you are alone and you hear "square". My daughter recieved this puzzle when she was about a year and a half old. We love it! She can hear the shape sounds as she places the pieces into the puzzle. I would hear "Ock-a-don" coming out of her mouth (octagon) on a daily basis.
The only downside to the puzzle is that every once in awhile the sensors stop working and the pieces don't make sound. OR the pieces will randomly go off while they are being stored. I have heard from many other friends who have this puzzle that even when the pieces aren't even near the puzzle, it will talk. The biggest trigger is turning the light on in a room where the puzzle has been sitting. Suddenly late at night you hear, "Square!" Nothing like freaking you out when no one else is around. ;) My two year old was so excited about this puzzle when she first got it. After playing with it for two days she knew all of the shapes when they appeared in everyday encounters (like signs, tables, books, etc). However she did get bored with the puzzle after a week so I had to put it away. Instead of having it available for play every single day, I make it available once every two or three weeks to keep her excited about it. My 11 month old likes to chew on the pieces and it is still intact so once again M&D has created a wonderful/durable puzzle for little ones. Numbers / Letters / Shapes by Melissa and David
These products are designed with a small light sensitive button under the number, letter or shape. Note that while I am only referring to the number game below that the same analysis applies to the letter (ABCs) and shape games. When you place the number in its appropriate slot (Example the # 2 in the number 2 slot) the game will say "two". The problem with the design is that it will also say two if your hand passes over the 2 slot while you are on your way to placing a 3 in the 3 slot. It will also say 2 if you cover the sensitivity button in the 2 slot with a 5, 6, 7, etc. I returned the numbers and letters game because the design problem of having the game calling out other numbers and calling out numbers other then the number my daughter has in her hand since that would tend to confuse her. I kept the shapes game even though it has the same design problem because since it is only 9 shapes (slots) vs. 20+ numbers or letters (slots) the problem is not as prevalent.
This Shapes and Sounds Peg Puzzle is a twist on the classic peg puzzle. Sounds are played when the puzzle pieces are properly placed on the board. It's a fun and unique way to reinforce cause-and-effect, early vocabulary and matching skills. Measures 9" x 12". Requires 2 "AAA" batteries (not included). (Delightful!)
(As smooth and luxurious as ganache)
(It's all about relationships) I LOVE Sarah's Bubbles series. I am a Bubbles head&proud of it (yes, I am a yahoo carrying member). I am also going to say, my heart belongs to the Bubbles series¬hing Sarah writes will be as good as Ms. Yablonsky's hilarious series! For real! I mean, hello Bubbles Unbound scooped up the Agatha Award for best first novel in 2001. That said&out of the way, I will say Sarah has whipped up a savory morsel in Sweet Love. This is Sarah's best stand alone to date. Sweet Love is delectable. Sarah Strohmeyer has created a beautifully written novel that dares you to care&get invested in Julie's life. Julie is a single mom doing her best to do the right thing. When I think of Julie, the word mosaic comes to mind. Sweet Love is a heart-rending novel rich w/ emotion. Michael is a brilliant gem. He simply steals the show. Julie's mom, Betty, reminds us just how precious our mom's are. Strohmeyer hits a home run delving into the heart of mother/daughter dynamics. Strohmeyer shimmers as she tenderly&realistically gives us a peek into the lives of Julie&Betty. *Tissues*. Sweet Love is a quick read that packs an ardent wallop. Strohmeyer's writing is so riveting, you can't help but empathize w/ Strohmeyer's delightful cast of characters. Strohmeyer's Sweet Love is as frothy as a chocolate soufflé. Sheer bliss. Sweet Love is a bit slow to simmer but as soon as Michael appears the book bubbles over w/ yummy goodness. Strohmeyer tosses in a plot twist @ the end that took me by surprise. Kudos to Sarah for penning such a charming novel that invites you into the hearts&souls of the sweetest characters to come along in a long time. The cover is heavenly, huh? Magnolia bakery anyone...
This is the first Sarah Strohmeyer book I've read, and it definitely won't be the last. I was expecting a light-hearted romance and while it had that element, it also tugged at my heart. Highly recommended. Yum! What a wonderful book. Julie had a child with Donald, but they are no longer together. Julie and her teenage daughter, Em, live next door to her parents. Julie's mom drives her crazy with her do this, do that.
Julie's best friend Liza and her mom are in on a scheme to get Michael, Julie's crush from her childhood, and Julie together, so they put them in a dessert cooking school.
Things are looking up, when Julie's world falls apart.
What a delightful, engaging book. I became fully engrossed in it. Sarah Strohmeyer hit such a note, that I think it will stick with you for awhile. Sarah Strohmeyer's "Sweet Love" follows the hectic life of single mother Julie Mueller, a TV reporter who's currently single and seriously overworked. Julie's hoping to be picked to follow the upcoming presidential campaign even as she digs up facts on the abduction and murder of a local girl. As a single mother, the case touches her deeply, and she oversteps her journalistic bounds in pursuit of the truth.
Julie lives above her parents, and her mother Betty, a breast cancer survivor, is desperate to see Julie matched up with the perfect man before she dies. Betty enrolls Julie in a dessert class by the renowned chef Renee D'Ours, much to Julie's chagrin. Julie feels herself to be a modern, liberated woman, and has no desire to be chained to the kitchen simply to appease some male whim. She feels strongly that her mother is little more than a domestic slave to her father, who disappears as soon as Betty is ill. Julie struggles with the sense that her father is constantly abandoning her mother, and can't understand why Betty stands by him despite his shortcomings.
Despite her misgivings, Julie goes to the dessert classes to discover that a) she does enjoy learning how to make sumptuous desserts, and b) her first love Michael Clayton, newly divorced, is also enrolled in the same class. Coincidence?
The rest of this sweet confection reads like a primer in dessert porn (but is thankfully calorie-free!) as Julie struggles to master elegant desserts. She also comes to grips with her bitter earlier falling-out with Michael, and she must step in when a family health crisis arrives. "Sweet Love" is a delightful read, the story of an overworked single mom looking for love and unexpectedly finding a connection to her own mother in the kitchen, the last place she ever planned on being. Julie Mueller is a single working mom trying her best to juggle raising her teenage daughter and her career. She's also trying to be an adult woman with her mother, who sometimes treats her like a five year old girl. Her mom, Betty, means well though. She has the usual concerns most others have regarding their single daughters: please marry a nice man and allow him to take care of you and your daughter so I don't have to worry that you will be alone for the rest of your life!
As Betty starts to face her own mortality, she realizes she has one regret regarding her daughter: she sabotaged her crush with Michael, who was good friends with Julie's older brother. Trying to correct this mistake, she surprises Julie with cooking classes for her Mother's Day present. Problem is, Betty loves to cook, while Julie, well... does not. Julie doesn't want to hurt her mother's feelings so she agrees to go to at least one class, while thinking of excuses to get out of the remaining classes.
To Julie's surprise, her first true love, Michael is also in the class. Funny how old feelings can rapidly come back and fill you in the present. Both Michael and Julie will realize the intensity of their feelings.
I absolutely loved this book! Julie's relationship with her mother was honest and real. What Julie considered to be nagging, Betty thought she was just being concerned for her well-being. The book not only focused on Julie's relationship with her mom, but relationships in general. I especially liked the relationship between Julie and her daughter. Highly recommended.
4.5 Stars A delicious novel about the power of loveand dessertby the national bestselling author.
Betty Mueller believed she did right by secretly ending her daughter Julies relationship with Michael Slayton, a wild, older neighborhood heartthrob. Twenty years later, Betty has come to realize her mistake. Workaholic Julie is now the single mom of a teenagerand Michael, the one man who could make her happy, has been out of her life for the past two decades.
Determined to make amends, Betty schemes to reunite the couple in a dessert class. And with the love of her mother and daughter, her own determination, and lots of chocolate, Julies chance for romance is all the higher... Rerations < Sweet Love >

(Excellent Book)
(Sweet Deception... Book deception)
(Read it and judge for yourself) a must read, very scary. definetely describes me during my " weight loss" aspartame binge. This book gives us great insight into just how much we as a public are duped into thinking that the powers to be are acting in our best interest, when actually they are not.
They are acting in the interest of the corp. making sure there bottom line is healthy. In the words of Dr. Mecola, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to take control of their health.
[...] This book is excellent. It's packed with great information. I'm diabetic and found this book to be a great source of information on the negative effects of artificial sweeteners. I was so impressed with this book that I purchased several more copies to give as gifts to friends. Nothing new... we know that they are not the best option, sugar may be, but evething in the market has this kind of artificial sugar... so what can we do?.... I also have to said that I prefer my coffe with splenda because it is more sweet than sugar .... Dr. Mercola did't make me change. This book doesn't get five stars for its readability, but for it's information. I had planned to read it straight through, but got bored in chapter two (despite the very good information presented - there's just a lot of it) and set the book aside for months. I recently picked it back up and flipped to a later chapter, determined to read at least the parts that most interested me, but by the time I'd flipped between all the chapters that captured my interest, I realized I'd read the whole book after all.
Every person should have the information on sweeteners presented here, and every U.S. citizen needs to know this information on the FDA. If even only 5% of what's presented here is true (and I suspect there's a lot more truth here than that), it's still a worthwhile read. I've long suspected that the FDA was out to protect business over the consumer, and there is so much evidence here that confirms my suspicions, it disgusts me. I found the interview with Dr. David Graham, the FDA whistle-blower, especially interesting.
There's some scary stuff presented here. Read it and judge its value for yourself. Learn about the chemicals we use to sweeten our foods and about the desperate need for reform in the FDA, or bury your head in the sand and pretend everything is okie-dokie. Personally, I want to know as much as possible about the things I ingest, and I'm very glad I read this book and now have more knowledge in these matters. Most people believe that sucralose (Splenda) is a perfectly safe artificial sweetener. Big business and the FDA have fostered that dangerous misconception. The truth is Splenda is by no means safe; and the same is true for many of the other artificial sweeteners being marketed today. Dr. Joseph Mercola---supported by extensive studies and research---exposes the fact that Splenda actually contributes to a host of serious diseases. Sweet Deception will lay out how the FDA really works for big food companies and should not be trusted when it comes to your health. (Best Fall Job Ever) The Fall of Candy Corn by Debbie Viguie is the second in the Sweet Seasons series starring Candace Thompson. Candy is still working at The Zone, the local amusement park, but this time as herself in a haunted maze. She hates the attention that keeps coming her way and is worried about her future plans for college. This YA chick-lit title is a little bit Nancy Drew, a little bit Scooby-Doo (including the line: we would have gotten away with it if not for you kids!), and a whole lot of fun! Candy is your very typical teenager, trying to have fun, hang with friends, and not think too hard about tomorrow. Vigiue captures the essence of adolescence with its flits of maturity as well as stretches of complete self-absorption. But Candy is charming, someone you want your son to bring home and your daughter to befriend. The Zone is a great backdrop filled with fascinating characters. Bring this one home for you and your daughter! This book was even better than the first one in the series. I really liked how Candace has really changed from the first book. She now is one of the regulars and she fits in with almost everyone. She's grown up quite a bit as she's more willing to help out others. She even gives up her free time to plan the dreaded Sugar Shock event and recruits others to join her. It's quite a nice change from the indecisive snobby girl from the first book. Her relationship with Kurt is growing also in this book. While he's a nice guy, I personally prefer Josh myself. I'm hoping that somehow him and Candace might end up together. Tamara is a much better character in this story. I was pleased to see her generosity put to good use in regards to the youth group's trip. This story really made me want The Zone to exist in real life. It would be so awesome to go visit and scare myself silly throughout the park. There's some scary events that take place in the park which would have freaked me out but Candace takes them in stride. Her job is way cool and I totally envy her. This book is a fun, quick, hip read that teens will love. I am dying to read the next book in the series. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite YA series ever. Halloween time at The Zone means monsters, mazes, and plenty of candy corn. Candace is shy about telling friends at church that she’s working as a maze monster. However, when she discovers her youth group has planned an outing to the park, her embarrassment quickly turns to stage fright! Rerations < The Fall of Candy Corn (Sweet Seasons Novel, A) >

customer 's review (cute) this hat is kind of flimsy and my daughter doesn't seem to like it as much as i thought she would. it is very cute and acutally lights up. i thought it would fit my 3 year old but it is too big. that is the main reason she doesn't want to wear it. overall it is a good buy for the money but might be better for an older, bigger child.
