(Fifty dance hits of the thirties and forties) 『For those of us raised on the music of the second half of the twentieth century, the music contained on this CD does not sound like music to dance to - more like easy listening music to relax to - but Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians were one of the leading dance bands of their day.
They had 218 hits of their own on the American charts, of which 50 can be found here. They also had other hits as the backing group to Hildegarde, Kate Smith and Bing Crosby.
The band featured Carmen Lombardo (Guy's brother) on vocals up to 1941, but most of the recordings here are from the period after 1941. Carmen sometimes sang with the band after 1941 and there are a few earlier tracks here, so you get a chance to hear him on some tracks here. The band sometimes re-recorded their earlier hits and Jasmine have sometimes included those rather than the originals, possibly because Guy recorded for several record labels. The recordings on this collection were all made for Decca, for whom Guy recorded in 1934 and 1935, then from 1938 to the end of his hit-making career in the fifties.
Even if you are new to Guy's music, fans of the music of that era may recognise some of the songs, including The trolley song, Shoo-fly pie and apple pan dowdy, Five feet two eyes of blue, Swinging on a star, Blues in the night, For me and my gal, Red sails in the sunset, By the light of the silvery moon, After the ball, St Louis blues, Little Dutch mill, The band played on, South of the border, Easter parade and The moon of Manakoora. In those days, it was customary for several versions to be in the charts simultaneously, so some of these songs also charted for Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby and others. Sometimes Guy ended up with the biggest hit, sometimes not. When it comes to whose version was best, it's all a matter of personal preference. In any case, all of them are brilliant in different ways.
People may not dance to this kind of music these days, but Guy and his orchestra made some very high quality music. This collection contains 50 of their finest recordings. This would make a great start to any collection of Guy's music, but I recommend the ASV collection The band played on 25 number one hits, which I've already reviewed, as an even better starting point. There is very little overlap, as this collection avoids most of the number ones, which occurred mainly in the early part of his career.』

Although they didn't play any song from this album, I still consider this as a great comeback album. The songs like "Open Your Eyes", "Reborn", "Live Again" are almost as strong Stryper as they were in their greatest times. This album is well mixed, and the sounds are very strong! There's actually no peaceful songs, they all are very heavy except from "Rain" which is a great break after 8 very heavy songs. I would say that Stryper is no longer glam rock - it's pure heavy metal! There's also a new version of "In God We Trust" (I.G.W.T.) (Terrific Comeback) 『This is really actually a pretty great comeback album by 80s Christian metal band Stryper. It took me a few listens to really get into it, and I thought it was great. I'm not joking around. I was really impressed by The Roxx Regime 1983 Demo, poking fun at their sound abd image which I actually thought was really good. At least they can laugh at themselves. All the songs, each individual track is really good, with second and last tracks standing out. Stryper wisely chose to update this sound on their comeback album which went to number 111 on the charts, very impressive c onsidering thousands of albums are released each week, so this was in the top 200. Sure, it might not go platinum any more, but the American charts are still sagging from 9 11 attacks. I really liked this a lot and am not jokig around. It's cool.』
(Great to hear these guys again!) 『I have been a fan of Stryper since the mid-90's when I was looking for an alternative to all of heavy medal/melodic bands of the time. I've never been one to like explicit lyrics - I just enjoyed the sound of heavy guitars and a great voice. I remember listening to a sample of Stryper's first album in a book store and saying "This is it!" I bought the album and kept on buying them through the 90's. The thing I liked best was the original (hard to do in that genre) sound and Michael Sweet's voice. I mean, this guy can really sing! He had the best voice in heavy metal bar none - Christian or secular. I had the pleasure of hearing him sing outside of the band once and I was amazed.
So on to the new album. I bought it because it was Stryper - that's the only reason - and I'm enjoying it very much. The first track reminds me of Stone Temple Pilots. Heaviest sound I've heard from this band - not like their old stuff at all. Oz has learned some new stuff! But it worried me a little - where was that old familiar sound I loved? I found it a little further in the middle. My favorite part of the album is the middle to the end. That's where the melodies start to surface and a smile came to my face.
In summary, this album is growing on me. I've listened to the whole thing around 6 times and it gets better each time. Sweet's voice is still excellent and the songs sound great. This is the first album I've heard in a while that makes me want to listen to it LOUD! The louder the better! I roll down the windows on my car and let it rip! The only reason I gave it four stars is because I think they can actually do better. At the time I remember it being a minor hit and seeing it in the movie theatre with a group of friends. Between the social commentary (that is still relevant today) we laughed our heads off.
His main character is a hard working but down on his luck picker who ends up on the wrong side of the bosses running the produce conclomerate when he accidentally ends up connected to a Cesar Chevez-esque labor mvoement leader.
Exiled to LA his labor and lady problems appear to get better but unravel in the end with both comedic and sober results. He also plays the philandering preacher and his own grandfather, both of which are amazing and hilarious to watch.
This movie will show you why Richard was so great and why performers like Robin Willaims, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall call him the "King" and pay hommage to him in their own movies.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (An occasional, necessary luxury) 『A very grown up taste and satisfying darker chocolate so that I'm able to eat one, sometimes 2, and not feel I need to eat the whole box at one sitting. These chocolates are pricey yes, not the kind you share with the neighbors. These you keep for yourself in a totally selfish, but at times, necessary way. The brandy kick is subtle, does not in my opinion hurt but enhance the taste experience against the fig and chocolate. I see it this way--in this downer of an economy, buying a box of these is a lot cheaper than that trip to Italy you thought you'd be planning right now. We may have no choice but to tighten our financial belts in a serious way; but in small ways, we all still need to have a simple luxury now and then that puts a smile on our face.』
(Delicious but watch out for the brandy!) 『This is a delicious, decadent, moist whole fig, complete with stem, delicately filled with a soft chocolate truffle type center then enrobed in chocolate with brandy. They are not wrapped as shown, yet foil-sealed on both ends like a miniature candy bar which was not as elegant in presentation, but did not detract from the item.
Although decadent and clearly hand-made, I believe the use of brandy overpowered this otherwise luscious sweet. The brandy flavor is overwhelming and drowned the superior chocolate, rich center, and delicate fig. The taste reeked far too much of alcohol. If you are a brandy lover, then you will love this. If you do not savor spirits mixed with your chocolate treats, beware.

My toddler is celiac and I suspect my husband and baby are too. So we decided the whole family will be gluten free. I needed cook books and Hangman were recommended to me by another celiac mom. I like the books very much but there are several things I wish were different:
-Updated! They were written at least 7-8 years ago. Several recipes call for things that substitute what we have today such as GF oatmeal. I'm not a pro so I don't know how to change the recipe using the GF oatmeal. -Easy to go through the recipes. You kind of have to read like a book or you may be a little lost. In my opinion, I wish it was easier to go through it and find recipes. -No pictures :( ! So it's hard to think of the end product or desire to cook it.
I mostly wanted a simple and easy book to cook for my little kids. I like this book and I know I will cook a lot of her recipes specially as my children gets older and less fussy.
Overall, the only 3 recipes I tried took me a long time since I'm brand knew to GF cooking but my family enjoyed them very much!』

My son loved the sugar cookie recipe we tried yesterday and when his sisters tried one they said they tasted even better than the wheat equivalents. The dough was so lovely, soft, and velvety. I was so surprised, having had many experiences with gluten-free dough, not all of them good.
Bottom line: if you're a celiac or allergic to wheat, this is a great cookbook to have in your kitchen. Check it out at your library first, try some recipes...you won't be sorry.』

Most of the recipes are not complicated, but they often require ingredients that you may not find at regular supermarkets (e.g. amchoor, or dried mango powder, and asafoetida) - I found everything I need at Kalyustan's in NYC (http://www.kalustyans.com). The author does suggest alternatives for the more hard-to-find ingredients, and her easy-to-follow recipes have inspired me to try making more labor-intensive dishes like Moroccan Bisteeya.
