customer 's review (size matters)
(Attractive and Useful Item)
(Excellent) I never found measurements of the Elegant Baby Silver Plated Abc Block Bank on the page before I bought it, but took a chance. It was about 1/3 of the size I was hoping for it to be. It's really pretty and I liked it enough to keep it, but really wish it would have been much bigger.
This bank looks better in person than in the ad and has some weight and size to it. Besides being reasonably priced at $12.99 (plus it's a super saver item), and nicely presented, I like it as a gift where the expecting parents have decided to wait and be surprised as to the sex of the baby. It's a nice decoration for baby's room, plus when the little one is older, he/she can actually use it. Quality was excellent, service and response time were great, price was reasonable. Very nice display package. This was a very good value! Bears and horses adorn this cute tarnish resistant silver plated bank. Great for the nursery! Even though the singers and the scenery are from the same, my 18 month granddaughter loves this DVD and the great collection of songs. She is not the only one who goes around the house singing, "I like trucks!" I have always thought that the kidsongs videos were nice, I have an autistic daughter who loves them because of the amount of music. My kids love car, boats and trains. Although, the video head tape is dirty, they still seem to enjoy it. Thank you! Join the crazy adventure as the Kidsongs Kids sing along aboard all kinds of trucks, an antique car, a boat and even a bulldozer! Chug along on a train, fly above the clouds in a jet plane and soar through the sky in a giant hot air balloon. If you love things that go, you'll love this video! (GREAT SHOW)
(This is just the TV show!)
(Disappointing for a Barney video) As long as my baby enjoys it then that's all that matters. Personally I don't care for it. This was onw of the first Barney DVD's my twins really loved. They couldn't talk yet but they had lots of fun making all the funny faces that they show in the DVD. My husband and I laughed and laughed at there attempts to immitate the characters. This is a great one and one of our favorites...we have watched almost everyone made. MY 2 YEAR OLD SON LOVES BARNEY, BUT IS VERY PARTICULAR ON WHICH ONES HE WILL WATCH. THIS ONE GAINED HIS APPROVAL FROM THE VERY FIRST VIEWING. HAPPY MAD SILLY SAD IS THE ONLY BARNEY DVD THAT HE WILL WATCH IN THE CAR. SO I WOULD SAY THAT THIS BARNEY IS WELL WORTH BUYING. I was expecting this to be like other Barney videotapes but it's only an episode of the PBS television show. I'm not happy about paying money for what I could have taped off the air for free. My 2 year old daughter is a major Barney fan and we have most of the Barney videos on either VHS or DVD. I was looking forward to getting this DVD because of the subject matter, but I have to say, after a couple of viewings, it's a major disappointment. The DVD seems to be kind of thrown together, the production values aren't the greatest, and the kids aren't especially interesting. My daughter has wandered off after a few minutes both times we've watched this one (which is rare - she's usually glued to the TV when Barney is on!) We're still fans of Barney and of many of his videos...just not this one. Love makes Barney's world go 'round, and the huggable dinosaur encourages his friends to express and understand their emotions in healthy ways. From creating masks to decorating a "Friends&Family Tree" with hearts, Barney uses fun songs and games to help his friends get in touch with their feelings. And he reminds them that manners, sharing and taking turns are great ways to show you care about others. It's always a happy day of fun and learning when you spend it with Barney and his friends. (Adults may like it even more than children!) I bought this for my three year old daughter, not only are we both entertained by it, but it has helped her with A is for ___, B is for ___, and so on. I'd buy it again. Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R9OZD8TOFXM78William Wegman's Fay's Twelve Days of ChristmasARTPIX Notebooks: William Wegman Video Works 1970-1999THE HARDLY BOYS IN HARDLY GOLD As an adult I thought the dvd was really cute. My 2 year old grand daughter, who is fasinated by Sponge Bob, Dora, and loves dogs, was less interested. She already knows her alphabet at age two, so I am not sure that when she gets older it will hold her attention either. At two it couldn't hold her attention. This video is as entertaining as the books! Probably even more so! If you are a fan of William Wegman's books this is something you definitely should buy - so creative and imaginative! You can watch this video over and over again and still laugh at all the funny stuff ! I highly recommend this video!!!! I viewed this DVD at the store in the new de Young art museum and I and other adults watching couldn't help laughing at this clever and cute video! Sure, it's silly sometimes but that is part of its charm. It's cheap, educational entertainment. Plus, after watching it, I'm inspired to get a Weimaraner! :) A is for Alphabet B is for Batty C is for Crooky!Renowned artist William Wegman brings his dogs (Fay Ray and offspring Batty Chundo and Crooky) together on DVD to teach children the alphabet.Children and adults will be transfixed by the amazing dogs as they magically form the letters of the alphabet while cooking upa pot of soup with everything from apples to zucchini.System Requirements:Running Time: 30 MinutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: CHILDREN/FAMILY Rating: NR UPC: 890157001018 Manufacturer No: MC-562 Rerations < William Wegman's Alphabet Soup >

customer 's review (Hauntingly beautiful!!)
(Quiet, dreamlike, somber, and riveting)
(The Sweet Hereafter Platinum Series)
(Bleak in theme, but amazingly well made.)
(Amazing and haunting. It will stay with you.) I saw this movie after I had read about it in a list of 100 daring movies. It truly is, in so many ways. The scene with the school bus is one I will never forget. There are many layers to this movie, and I enjoyed them. Don't watch this if you are subject to becoming depressed by sad movies. The Sweet Hereafter is, however, one of those films that has a dreamlike quality that sucks you in. The art of it is very appealing to me. Some will say it is slow, too quiet, a downer. But I think the emotion of it provides more than enough intensity.
The movie is based on a novel which is itself somewhat based on a true story of a small town in Texas where tragically many of the town's children were killed in a schoolbus accident, and ambulance-chasing lawyers descended on the town like a swarm of hungry locusts. The townspeople eventually received hundreds of millions of dollars in damages from a company which may or may not have really been responsible for the accident.
The movie takes this premise in a different direction. It focuses on one lawyer who comes to town and interviews witnesses, survivors, and moms and dads who lost their kids. The lawyer himself is going through a vaguely similar personal crisis -- losing his daughter to drugs. Great disruption is bubbling in the town because of the tragedy and the impending, potentially enriching, lawsuit. The ending is a surprise, turning everything upside down for a reason that has nothing to do with the accident, and no one will ever likely know the real reason.
What is the movie really about? It is about grief turning to boiling anger, mixed with greed. It is about the secret lives of ordinary people in small towns. It is about how justice can be meted out in strange ways.
I saw this several years ago, and then again this week. Both times I was riveted. Great movie, but the promised extras in the "Platinum Series" fell short. In fact, one menu item didn't even play. A school bus careens off a snowy road and onto a frozen lake. Within seconds, the next act will change the many lives within a frosty upstate New York community. One father will turn to an extramarital affair, one girl will position herself to obtain the sweetest form of revenge on her abusive father, and a greedy, yet somehow earnest, attorney will turn to face his own domestic demons and the past that hauntingly mocks him.
The Sweet Hereafter is the type of film that captures the complete attention of the audience with its virtuoso adaptation from novel to film. It is perhaps one of the most lingering films I've ever seen, and when the closing scenes depicts the forthcoming headlights shining through thin curtains as a young teenaged girl stares back at them with brittle anticipation, you will know why.
I came across the title of this film while researching movies starring Sarah Polley, who's an amazing actress (and now director). Polley is one of those talents who is underused and underrated--a true diamond in the rough. At any rate, I did not know of this movie or the book version and gave the film a try. I was not at all let down. In fact, I feel as though I discovered a film to add to my short list of favorites. Polley plays a teen whose life is altered in the aftermath of a schoolbus crash. One of the only survivors of the crash, her testimony is important to the case being brought by an out-of-town attorney (played by Ian Holm) who shows up seemingly out of nowhere to stir up a case for the parents left childless or those otherwise affected by the crash. Holm's character, Stephens, is intriguing and viewers are left to wonder if he was drawn to this case out of greed or to quell his own internal demons. The movie is haunting. The characters, though from this simple town (in fact, even the landscape is black and white--changing only at the very end), are multidimensional and layered with complexity and secrets. The outcome of the film is unexpected yet necessary. The Sweet Hereafter is a film you won't soon forget. In synopsisThe Sweet Hereaftermay sound like a devastatingly unpleasant downer, but don't be discouraged. The real subjects of this luminous picture (adapted by director Atom Egoyan from Russell Banks's novel) are hope and renewal--avoiding the cheap emotions suggested by those clichéd terms. Like other Egoyan films (Exotica, for one), it's an intriguing sort of mystery, a puzzle in which the big picture is not revealed until the very last piece is in place. A metropolitan attorney (Ian Holm) travels to a small British Columbian town where 14 children have been killed in a school bus accident to prepare a class-action suit. With sensitivity and empathy, he approaches relatives with promises that the suit will give focus and closure to their grief. And as he investigates the circumstances of the accident, he not only uncovers a few local secrets, but dredges up some painful pieces of his own past. Slowly, deeper mysteries are revealed--eternal mysteries at the very heart of human nature: Who is to blame for a tragedy like this? And why do people feel such a need to assign blame? Is that how they give meaning to otherwise inconceivable events? How does one reassemble a shattered life? The Sweet Hereafteris too honest to offer bromides, but it shows how a few people struggle, as best they can, to answer these questions for themselves. DVD extras include audio commentary by Egoyan and Banks, a Charlie Rose interview with Egoyan, and a panel discussion with the filmmakers.--Jim Emerson Rerations < The Sweet Hereafter >

(Underrated gem)
("This is the voice of world control...")
(Service review + brief abt film)
(Long before the recent "Greenin o' America" mentality hit our) Stay away from this ugly pan and scan and instead consider MGM's European PAL region 2 version (if your DVD player can handle it) - The PAL 2 is a near perfect, beautiful, anamorphic wide screen. You can find the PAL copy at Amazon UK or I bought mine from xploitedcinema.com. Colossus's plausible plot combines three elements - the cold war, computers running amuck, and a doomsday scenario. Many similar elements can be found in War Games, Star Trek (VGER), Andromeda Strain, Doctor Strangelove, The Day The Earth Stood Still and Fail Safe. The basic ideas and premise, acting, directing, and set design work well together and make for an exciting and thoughtful film. I particularly liked when the computer's first start to chat with each other and their tantrum-like demand for communication. Colossus never earned classic status - my guess that was due to a trite sounding title, a mostly unknown cast, a subjective ending, and a sometimes visable thin layer of Hollywood-cheese spread. Otherwise there is little to complain about the film - for the most part Colossus is a cool film and deserves high standing on all Sci-Fi lists. There was a time, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when science fiction films seemed to be emerging from their cult status, and into the mainstream as films that could express the deepest and highest aspirations of mankind in ways that mere literary sci fi could not. There were a plethora of intelligent films in that era. Yes, there had been intelligent sci fi in the decades before. In the 1930s, there was William Cameron Menzies' Things To Come, based upon the H.G. Wells tale. The 1950s saw such sci fi films as The Day The Earth Stood Still, On The Beach, Forbidden Planet, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. But it really was the late 1960s that saw sci fi reach a greatness besides mere `genre greatness.' Genre greatness is where one can say that a film was a great film noir, sci fi, romance, etc. But truly great films transcend their genres and become great art regardless of what art genre they originate from. In this era there were folks who specialized in quality A science fiction films, unlike the B quality sci fi films of the past. These included heavyweight directors like Stanley Kubrick (Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange) and superstar actors like Charlton Heston (Planet Of The Apes, The Omega Man, Soylent Green). But there were also many other quality and literate sci fi films like Slaughterhouse 5, The Andromeda Strain, Westworld, THX 1138, Silent Running, and Logan's Run, just to name the best known. Then came the puerile Star Wars series (from George Lucas, who inexplicably also made the wonderful THX 1138), and sci fi has never again reached the heights of that Golden Age which the Star Wars franchise killed off. Yes, there have been a few exceptions- the first two films in both the Alien and The Terminator series, and the 2001 sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact, but that's about it. Star Trek does not count, since its franchise films were merely a leveraged television phenomenon. However, one of the truly terrific sci fi films that has been criminally neglected critically, is director Joseph Sargent's hour and forty minute long Colossus: The Forbin Project, based upon D.F. Jones' 1966 novel Colossus, and adapted for the screen by James Bridges. The film was shorn of any real star power, but the very fact that it lacked A List Hollywood names lends it an authenticity and believability that still carries t |
