(Artie Shaw by Artie Shaw) 『This wonderful CD entitled The Very Best Of Artie Shaw contains 18 great hits hand picked by Shaw himself. Shaw was a prolific recording artist with a crew that could swing like no other! This CD proves it.
The CD opens with "Any Old Time" featuring Billie Holiday singing with Artie Shaw on clarinet with his crew knocking 'em dead! This beautiful ballad starts the track set with strength and it holds your attention well. "Rosalie" follows "Any Old Time;" this song has Tony Pastor doing the vocals and the melody is every bit as classic as the one for "Any Old Time." It REALLY swings and you are bound to enjoy this if this is your kind of music! Awesome! Moreover, "Deep Purple" is sung flawlessly by the great Helen Forrest as Artie and His Orchestra provide a marvelous musical arrangement.
Other gems on this CD include the classic standard called "Star Dust" by Carmichael and Parish; Artie's horns and strings do a lot to enhance the beauty of this number as they perform a sensitive yet strong musical arrangement. "My Blue Heaven" gives us another instrumental track recorded at The Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City in 1939; and this number shines like a golden nugget in the brightest light ever! "'S Wonderful" gets the royal treatment with Artie once again on clarinet and Roy Eldridge on trumpet. The sound quality on this track is particularly good, too.
I also like this CD because there are three tracks recorded and broadcast live from The Hotel Pennsylvania in New York: "Everything Is Jumpin';" "My Blue Heaven" and "Diga Diga Doo." These tracks give us a certain spontaneity and zest that you don't always hear in a recording made in a studio.
"Begin The Beguine" is yet another classic instrumental penned by Cole Porter; and Artie Shaw and His Orchestra do a wonderful job of delivering this number.
The CD ends with the very upbeat "Diga Diga Doo;" this number will make you want to jump up and dance anywhere you happen to be! Dave Barbour is on the guitar but the horns carry the bulk of this melody.
The liner notes include all the song credits and Loren Schoenberg contributes an extensive, informative essay about Artie's career and personal life. The art work is very good; but on several of the tracks there is some surface noise. I had hoped not to suffer from any surface noise on a CD in this day and age; the remastering job was not well done. Therefore I must take off a star to make this a four star review.
Artie Shaw remains one of the greatest talents of the entire 20th century. His artistry can never be truly forgotten. I highly recommend this CD for Artie Shaw fans and fans of classic swing music. People who enjoy classic pop vocals will also enjoy the tracks that feature Billie Holiday, Tony Pastor and Helen Forrest.

(One of the best single-CD albums of Artie Shaw -- genius!) 『This is one of the best single CDs available of music by Artie Shaw and His Orchestra. Shaw was one of the great innovators of swing jazz of the 1930s and 1940s, always seeking artistic ways to express himself as a clarinet player and a bandlear, despite the heavy commercial pressures he faced (he frequently broke apart his bands when he could no longer tolerate the `business' side of the music business). This CD contains a wide variety of selections that Shaw picked himself. They contain music from his three major bands: the 1938-39 band that was the most popular musical group in the country for those two years, the enormous 1940-42 band (with a large string section), and the little-appreciated 1944-45 band.
I personally think that the Artie Shaw collection "Begin the Beguine" (available on the RCA Bluebird label) is a bit stronger than this one, with a focus on more of his hits from the 1938-39 band -- as an album, it swings much harder -- but the variety here is greater, and the sound quality somewhat better. Since the two CDs share only five tracks in common, I advise buying both. They're both inexpensive, so it's a good deal.

The 1938-39 tracks are the strongest, with "Begin the Beguine" still a towering classic of smooth, beautiful swing. The three live tracks are fabulous and show the band getting loose and extreemly jazzy in front of a crowd of crazed dancers. It's also wonderful to hear the band's two primary vocalists, Tony Pastor (also a sax player) and Helen Forrest, sing two of the band's signature numbers.
Of the other numbers, "Summertime" is a real stunner. Taken from the Gershwin opera "Porgy and Bess," it has an incredible Shaw solo and a heavy, soulful power. The lengthy "Concerto for Clarinet" may have a dull title, but it's a fast jumpin' number with awesome solos. The same goes for "Two in One Blues." Another classic solo on clarinet from Artie Shaw appears on "Star Dust," a song he recorded often.
Artie Shaw is really an American treasure, showing a rare blending of popular music with jazz genius, and this CD offers up the genius in an affordable package (and grab the collection "Begin the Beguine" and you'll have a full Artie Shaw experience -- and probably still be begging for more!)』
(Excellent introduction to one of jazz's finest clarinetists) 『Artie Shaw is one of the best jazz artists of his era, leading one of the best and most popular big bands. Though he may not be as well-known or lauded as the late, great Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw is certainly one of the greatest clarinetists in jazz history. This compilation, part of a fine series of vintage jazz CD's being issued by RCA Victor (see Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman), makes an excellent introduction as well as a great sampler of Artie Shaw's best work. Every track is a gem, including a few compositions by Shaw himself. While he cut most of his hits with a big band (some of which he actually despised, feeling they were too pedestrian and commercial), his best work is really with the chamber jazz he helped pioneer. It's unfortunate that Shaw retired so early, having become sick of the business (he's still alive and well).
Long time jazz enthusiasts will probably be better served by the"Last Recordings"CD's, which contain Shaw's best work and can still be found in used CD stores, but for anyone who isn't too familiar with Shaw, this is a great place to start.』

As you can see, I'm a huge Nebraska Cornhusker fan, have been my whole life and will be my whole life. That part about me will never change. But make no mistake, no matter my school, no matter what colors I wear on Saterday afternoons in the fall, I am a college football fan. I love the sport, I love everything about it. The fans, the environment, the tailgating, the players, coaches, schools, rivalries, and stadiums that make it the greatest sport ever played. But what would college football be without the marching bands that take to the field every Saturday to show off their team spirit and make their respective schools proud? And what would these amazing bands be without their school fight songs and the roar of 80,000 fans screaming at the top of their lungs?
Needless to say, it wouldn't be nearly as fun. In comes this gem of a CD, putting together 33 of the countries best fight songs, including the fight songs for the University of Notre Dame, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Florida, FSU, Miami, Ohio State, Alabama, and of course my beloved University of Nebraska. Plus many more. All the fight songs are preformed by the Florida State University marching band and they do a fantastic job at it. Sure, I would have liked to see all these songs preformed by their respective marching bands, but I can't take anything away from the terrific performance FSU put together for the creation of this CD. If they'd added Hail Varsity from Nebraska this would have been the greatest CD ever, but I'll settle for No Place Like Nebraska.
No matter what University you cheer for, or what color you paint your body on game day, fight songs are an important part of college football, and any fan worth his salt owes it to himself to know these songs. GO BIG RED!

The similiarities between the Disney movie and this are quite obvious. The also obvious thing is this 30 minute movie was made in 1984! Where as Disney's mermaid movie came out in 1989-1990. So this is more of an original. The story centers around a young, adorable mergirl with 4 sea-esque friends and oh yeah, she's a princess too. The animation was made from Japanese animators, so the visuals are awesome and very detailed! I LOVED IT!!! A sea-witch wants control of the sea kingdom ( sounds familair?), and she has her squid henchman grab it while the mergirl is doing her dance performance. To the make the story shorter, the good guys (or should I say GIRLS win and every thing is La-Di-Da!! :) GET IT, it's a rare find, and worth the money. Based off the popular doll i will never forget playing with it in the bathtub, and the movie is even better!! Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Only Four Shows, One In Two Parts) 『Just what the title says, this disc only gives you technically five episodes, but since one is a two-parter, it is actually only four. But I got it for only five dollars, so I can't complain too much.
This disc gives the observant viewer a good back-to-back display of the show's jump, from its days as a genuinely funny show to the parody of itself it later became. Don't get me wrong, all five episodes included here are very funny, but sometime in 1990, it derailed, and never fully came back. The two-parter is from 1991, and there is a marked decrease in the quality of the writing and directing in it. In fact, I can pin-point the moment the show derailed. It was the one where the two families went to England, on a bogus prize vacation. That episode isn't on this particular disc, but following the show's run, how it played out, that is precisely when it lost it.
I may start getting the seasons as available on Amazon, although I may stop after the third or fourth season. But, completionist I am, I will probably keep getting them, as finances allow.
Back to the product at hand. There isn't really anything in this disc that separates it, it is a so-so depiction of a show that itself could, and should be a whole lot better.』

(A must for Bundy fans!) 『The most memorable episode on this DVD is "I'll See You In Court" from Married...With Children's third season(1988-89). Al(Ed O'Neill) and Peggy Bundy(Katey Sagal) retreat to a motel to try to "put some spice" back into their private life. They view a videocassette,recorded by a security camera,of their next-door neighbors Steve(David Garrison) and Marcy Rhoades(Amanda Bearse) engaged in a private escapade. It turns out that the camera violated the Rhoadeses' privacy,when they were at that same motel by themselves at an earlier time. So both couples sue the owners/operators of the motel but only the Rhoadeses were awarded a nice $100 grand because the Bundys' privacy was not invaded afterall. After the trial,Al and Peggy are making love underneath the presiding judge's podium with a security camera overhead! This episode was never aired on the Fox network during its original run because because of some of its content. The FX channel did once air it in 2002,though. In "You Better Shop Around",a two-part episode from 1990-91,Al,Peg and their children Kelly(Christina Applegate) and Bud(David Faustino) seek relaxing shelter in a supermarket. Al accidentally wins a sweepstakes by becoming the store one millionth customer of the day. At the time,Al steps ahead of Marcy in the checkout line because he only had a pack of chewing gum. Balloons and confetti are falling and Marcy is bitching because she was originally the next in line. Al quipps,"What's the difference? You still are!". Al checks out a headline on the cover of the National Enquirer which reads "Steve Rhoades to marry Cher". That immediately caught Marcy's attention because he's her ex-husband(this was after Marcy married her second husband Jefferson D'Arcy). The other episodes are awesome. This is a must for every MWC fan.』

(Some More Things...) 『It has been some time since this was released, and Seasons 1-3 are now out on DVD (Season Three having a busted theme song), but there are still points to make on this product.
Not necessarily a "bad" DVD or a "waste of money" per se, this was intended to gauge customer response. If response was great, more DVDs (and season sets) were to follow. I guess we can safely say that response was DAMN great! Aside from picture quality issues (I'm not gonna say it's great, I ain't gonna say it ain't), the subsequent season sets were quite great!

(Outstanding Look at What Made Soul Extraordinary) 『In "Sweet Soul Music," Peter Guralnick explains what made soul music great. He views soul as a distinct genre, separate from Motown, which was performed primarily by black singers for a black audience. Soul told the story of the rapid social upheaval transforming the South while reflecting the gains made by the civil rights movement. According to Guralnick, soul was different from other forms of R&B because it involved straining the boundaries of the listener's expectations and hinting at a conclusion without actually reaching it. Unlike Motown, the musicians who performed soul were freelancers and individualists who emphasized the underlying feeling of a song more than keeping the mechanics exactly right. Guralnick says that because the musicians, songwriters, producers, managers, and engineers who created the music worked at isolated regional outposts far removed from the major record labels, they were able to define their own roles within the movement.
"Sweet Soul Music" traces the origin of soul to the song "Crying in the Chapel" by the Orioles, which blurred the lines between gospel and R&B. "I Got a Woman" by Ray Charles, which followed, solidified soul as a distinct genre and exerted a profound influence on the future of music in the U.S. Guralnick explains that "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge then brought white fans to the table. The book tells the stories of the heroes of soul, including Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin, explaining in great detail how each set goals, viewed their careers, related to their peers, and overcame obstacles in order to achieve the extraordinary success that they did. Many of the stories are memorable, enabling the reader to see how a particular event changed an individual artist's view of the world, influenced that artist's decisions, and shaped the music itself.
The book is at its best, though, when telling the stories of the lesser-known talents who paved the way for future artists to succeed. Guralnick explains how Arthur Alexander's single "You Better Move On" was criticized in Nashville for sounding "too black," but eventually found the audience it deserved and opened new doors for other Muscle Shoals artists. William Bell's successful touring to support the single "You Don't Miss Your Water (Till Your Well Runs Dry)" not only to put Stax on the map, but enabled Bell to set the gold standard regarding philosophy towards fame and stardom. Guralnick explains how Stax's decision to open a record store and carry competing labels' stock gave the Stax musicians an opportunity to study hits closely, learn why they were hits, and discuss what future hits should sound like.
The book concludes that soul never fully recovered from the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an event that caused relationships among many of the movement's key players to become frayed. Guralnick says that soul was a genre that could only exist in a particular time and place because of the influence that the struggle for civil rights had on the music. Overall, "Sweet Soul Music" offers an outstanding look at why soul left such an extraordinary legacy for artists and fans today. The book is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to understand why soul left such a powerful impression on listeners at the time, and continues to do so today.』
(Labor of Love) 『Like Robert Palmer's superb"Deep Blues,"Guralnick's extensive look back at the roots of R&B and soul music combines criticism, biographical profiles and social history into one rich, printed tapestry. Meticulously researched, the book shows its author's deep love of the music without sacrificing objectivity.
Guralnick provides plenty of background on the"race music"that spawned R&B and the great soul music of the sixties and early seventies, on which much of the book concentrates. Like most, if not all, of the great blues musicians, the early pioneers of soul came from humble, mostly southern beginnings, and made little or no money from their work, which was liberally sampled by white musicians.
A good portion of the narrative revolves around the fascinating rise and fall of Stax Records, the tiny Memphis-based label that brought together white executive leadership and musicians with raw black talent from the South. Despite initially primitive recording conditions, Stax developed into a powerhouse that was home to some of the greatest musicians in soul music, from Otis Redding to William Bell to Carla Thomas to Sam and Dave to Johnny Taylor. The label became representative of the growing sense of black pride that defined the era, one in which civil rights, of course, moved to the forefront of America's consciousness.
All of these musicians and many more, including Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and James Brown, to name a few, are given finely drawn profiles by Guralnick, and he treats their contributions to American music with the respect that they deserve. Throughout, he is intent on letting the artists tell their stories in their own words, and remains content to use his own fine writing to direct and bind together the narrative.
Another great accomplishment of the book, for me, was Guralnick's successful effort to illuminate the ties between white and black musicians during this period. Yes, many of the most successful producers, notably Atlantic's Jerry Wexler, were white, but so were many of the musicians. Most had grown up in the south around blacks and were intimately familiar with African-American music. The Stax house band, which included Steve Cropper and Donald Dunn, was white, and they performed on many songs penned by great black songwriters such as David Porter and Isaac Hayes. Think of the great, ominous organ introduction to Aretha Franklin's"I Ain't Never Loved a Man."The white player is Spooner Oldham. This musical cross-fertilization is a notable point, one not often brought into considerations of the era.
As a young kid coming up in the mid-60s, I loved the music that Guralnick writes about here, and I could tell -- even if he hadn't said so -- that he did too. He goes beyond that love to really dig into its roots and understand it, and succeeds admirably.』
(get the facts right) 『I bought this book in the gift shop at the newly resurrected Stax Records museum in Memphis... the Satellite Record Shop, next door to the museum. I've lived in Memphis all my life, although I'm about 15-20 years younger than most of those made famous by the Stax phenomenon. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and it served to fill in the blanks about many things I had only heard about superficially growing up here. I'm bothered by a lot of factual errors, not noticeable or important maybe to many, but this is about my home. At least the author and/or his editor could have been more sure of producing a factually accurate book. The edition I bought was published in 1999... the original in 1986. Did no one else catch these errors in the '86 edition? Here are a couple of examples: He refers to a Memphis radio station, KWEM, which was and is actually in West Memphis, Arkansas, and whose call letters are KWAM. (Everybody knows stations east of the Mississippi River start with a"W"and all those west of the Mississippi start with a"K".... radio and TV stations alike. Does the author know where Memphis is? He refers to a naval base in Tipton County, TN, where Booker T.&the MGs would play, when in fact it's in Shelby County, the same county Memphis itself is in. Does this change anything in the big picture? Probably not. Is the book any less enjoyable or informative? No, not really. But if you considered yourself a true New Yorker, and someone kept writing about it, calling it Gethom City, or The Big Orange, well, you get the picture. Considering the author's credentials, I was expecting a great deal more out of this book, and I am greatly disappointed!』
(NOT A Definitive Text!) 『WARNING! This is NOT "the definitive handbook on the terrorist threat to commercial airline and airport security!"
Aviation security and terrorism have been topics of intense public scrutiny over the past few years with endless prescriptions for how to shore up the former against the latter. Into a marketplace flooded with myriad books written by self-proclaimed "experts" comes Aviation and Airport Security: Terrorism and Safety Concerns, by Kathleen M. Sweet. The author is a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel with impressive credentials as an intelligence officer, an assistant air attaché to the Russian Federation, an instructor at the Air War College, a member of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) cadre, and a military/political affairs office with a Special Operations Wing. She currently works as a consultant with various firms and a university instructor teaching courses in intelligence, security, and terrorism. In her introduction, the author states the book "contains the necessary information with which to devise a strategy that college students, military personnel, and police counterterrorist unit [sic] alike can use to educate themselves" (p. xxiii).
Unfortunately, that sentence contains a key to what is to come. I really wanted to like this book and at first blush it seemed a solid tome written by an expert to address a vital topic. Regrettably, the more I read, the more I found that the book is laden with suppositions, sweeping generalizations, factual errors, grammatical and spelling errors, and intellectual overreach. In short, the book, while ambitious in scope, promises more than it delivers. Dissecting just the sentence quoted above, it may be useful for college students to become familiar on a superficial level with the concepts used in the book, but military personnel and police counterterrorism units have assiduously labored ever since the catastrophic attacks of September 11, 2001, to educate themselves on aviation security and terrorism. The military and police have led the way to study these issues and have pro-actively engaged in very aggressive information sharing campaigns to create a common sight picture.
The author does undertake a very methodical and systematic study and correctly identifies the importance of air travel and transport for our economy and way of life. However, the extraordinary depth and breadth of topics are an inch deep and a mile wide. The 15 chapters have numerous sub-topics included that last only a page or two or three, allowing little room for the topic other than to mention it and give a paragraph or two. Every topic brought up is valid but is given short shrift, resulting in a very unsatisfying treatment of the topic. In addition, there are wholesale sections copied and pasted from the Internet (appropriately sourced and noted), throughout the book, which lessens its credibility and portrays a curious lack of imagination on the part of the author. Cutting and pasting is a practice common among sluggish and less accomplished intelligence analysts and is out of place in a textbook purportedly intended for college students.
The use of open source information seems to actually take the place of any real analysis or policy recommendations. The book has no real flow and is uneven, as if it were sloppily hashed together with disparate elements welded together to form the final product. The chapter on terrorism unevenly tries to cram into a few pages what multi-volume studies on the topic can only allude to. The author tries to wrap in the history of the Near East (a topic in and of itself) along with the history of terrorism (another topic), terrorist group profiles (another separate topic) and then fold in case studies (a still different topic) - all very poorly.
Spelling errors throughout plague the book, and factual errors undermine its credibility. A few examples follow since a complete recounting of all errors would be a larger undertaking than this review will allow. The author's spelling of al-Qa'ida or al-Qaeda is rendered as "Al'Qaeda, " which is completely erroneous. The author attributes the June 25, 1996, terrorist attack at Khobar Towers to Usama bin Ladin, when in fact Iranian-backed terrorists carried out the act. The author's citation of seven state sponsors of terror is several years out of date (there are now four). Other data points cited regarding the intelligence community, law enforcement agencies, counterterror organizations, and the Department of Homeland Security, are outdated by a few years and placed in improper context. The author also uses citations from sources whose agendas are not clearly stated, presenting a perspective devoid of context.
Aviation and Airport Security: Terrorism and Safety Concerns has value in that it provides a wide -based view of aviation security, and in a wide ranging sense it is generally correct. However, the process breaks down when the author tries to provide specificity on topics other than those she copied and pasted from the Internet (and even some of those are incorrect) Perhaps the book's merits might be as a reference of topics to pursue, but not in a class taught by the author. For those seeking counter-threat and counterterror solutions to better protect the transportation infrastructure, this tome is useful, but not by any stretch of the imagination a definitive guidebook or manual.』
