(OK video, wish I had previewed it first before buying)
(wonderful!!!)
(Another Kid's Songs Winner!!)
(Good, would recommend) Kidsongs-I Can Dance is an exciting video. The children dancing are excellent and I really liked their choise of songs. However I expected this to be somewhat instructional and that is not the case. They do not show the audience how to do any of the dances and at times the camera is not focused on their feet making it impossible to follow. But overall it is very entertaining. Just don't expect to be able to follow what they do. Songs include Mexican Hat Dance, Charleston, The Yellow Rose of Texas (line dance) and other old favorites. I bought this for my two year old because she loves music and loves to dance. I played it a few times and she still doesn't get into it. I don't know if maybe she's just too young for this. The music and the dancing and the quality of the video is just so-so. The ones she really loves to watch is the HBO Classical Baby series, and I also picked up a cheap DVD from Target that's from Baby Genius and she has watched that one almost every single day. If she's not dancing to it, she just likes to have it on in the background to listen to it. This DVD of kid songs is probably more appropriate for older kids. 5 Grandkids started watching at 6 months! They all love Kidsongs!! I even like them. The songs are the ones I learned when I was young. Some of my grandkids are in their teens now and still enjoy watching with the younger ones. I am really enjoying the Kid's Songs series. I was not sure about this one so I read the reviews. They were right!! The movie totally captures the children's attention. I have age 4 months to age 5 enrolled at my daycare. They were all enjoying the music and very colorful outfits. My 22 month old loves this DVD. The first time we watched it she made me hit repeat on a couple of the songs. The production quality isn't amazing (looks like a couple semi professionals taped the kids dancing all over their town); but the kids are cute, the costumes are adorable and it gets my kid up and dancing. It isn't instructional with a step by step dance lesson, but my kid wouldn't follow that anyway. There is a bonus track/promotion at the end which has short clips from their other (maybe 5 or so?) DVD's...we watch those too. I would buy another one of these. It's worth the money. Join the kidsongs kids * the biggles&learn some new dance moves with this upbeat kids dance video. Youll be doing the charleston the twist the waltz forming a conga line&barefootin on the beach. Put on yout cowboy boots for a line dance jitterbug at a 50s diner&rock it out on main street. (Simply lovely)
(Not for lovers of the 18th Century classics)
(A rather awful recording)
(EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR) Not sure what it is about this music, but it truly makes you feel great. My Mom loves it and bought it for my birthday as well. I can just listen to it forever. I am not a classical music connoiseur, and love it just the same. A great CD to add to your collection. I can listen to any Pachabel collection, but this one is great. I play it over and over&can never get sick of it! For those of us that truly appreciate the beauty of 18th Century music played on period instruments or modern orchestra instruments, this CD is not for us. I was very disappointed at the interruption presented with modern electronic instruments and modern vocal interpretations, none of which are identified in the product description. I also purchased Pachelbel Canon by Tomaso Albinoni, English Anonymous, Johann Sebastian Bach at the same time which I highly recommend and rate as 5 stars. I've had the misfortune to hear this CD and all the perversions of Johann Andreas Pachelbel's chamber piece on this CD once too often.
The work was written for three solo violins and basso continuo [violoncello or viola da gamba + organ or harpsichord] and it is a rather virtuoso work, typical of works written for a small group of violins [or cornetti] over an ostinato bass line in the 17th century.
All but one "interpretation" on this CD bares little or no similarity to the written score at all and almost all of the arrangements of the piece are complete kitsch, trash, even. Cleo Laine's "song" is probably the worst example.
So what do we learn about the composer from this CD? Virtually nothing. However, it is instructive to learn how tastelessly a piece of music can be pushed, strained, pummelled, shredded, extracted, decimated, pumped up, deflated, force-fed, mutated and generally exploited by musicians, singers and arrangers who clearly have no knowledge of 17th century music and couldn't care less about acquiring any knowledge of that music.
I work in a music shop and it always amuses me when people who've bought CDs like this one decide to explore Pachelbel's music a little further and discover that they've been completely hoodwinked and that the composer's actual music sounds nothing like any interpretation of the Canon [&Gigue] they've ever heard - except, of course, if they've been fortunate enough to hear Musica Antiqua Köln's or London Baroque's recordings. They walk away bewildered by the organ music, chamber music and cantatas of J. A. Pachelbel.
Two stars for the one rather pleasant H.I.P. recording on this CD. We're getting married in June 08 and this is exactly the music We were looking for! Great cd and an excellent price!! Rerations < Pachelbel's Greatest Hit: The Ultimate Canon >

(Wiggles Toot-Toot)
(My son loves this movie!)
(Almost a 5 star!)
(Movin'&Groovin') Video was delivered quickly. It was just what I ordered and in the condition promised. My 2 yr old granddaughter started watching the wiggles before she was 1. She loves this one! She'll dance and sing along and we usually have to replay it at least once. I highly recommend this one! The crazy thing about this show is that the dvd i bought seemed like it was a burnt copy because it kept replaying about hundred times and the movie never ended! it was kind of weird. i tried to get some chores done during the 45 minutes it said it ran...and the movie kept running! it's weird but the show was great. It is a good one. But since newer stuff has come out that IS a tad better because the new ones are song after song after song and this one has breaks in the singing as the Wiggles go over a storyline about their big red car having broken down---so sometimes DD loses a little interest. But, of the older Wiggles DVD's this is by far the best. What is fun about the Wiggles is that they are a fast action group and my 2-1/2-year-old granddaughter loves to dance with them. If they say move your arms or touch your head, she does! She loves Capt Feathersword and their antics always make her laugh :) A beloved children's band from Australia, The Wiggles are four music-making guys: Jeff, Murray, Greg, and Anthony. When the Big Red Car (a whimsical dune buggy) won't start, or as the Wiggles say, no "Chugga, Cugga, Toot, Toot!," it's an ideal time to sing and dance. There are songs about walking across the street and eating foods that are healthy as well as some that are more familiar like "Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes" and "Look Both Ways." The lads stir up a whole lot of energy with the help of their costumed friends, including Wags the Dog, Officer Beaples, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain FeatherSword, and Zardo Zap. Their videos have a retro '60s feel, very upbeat and fun. It's easy to see why they are so popular in the land down under. Ages 3 to 6.--Peggy Maltby-Etra After one ride in the Wiggles' Big Red Car, you'll be giggling and wiggling non-stop. "Toot Toot®!" and "Chugga Chugga" along with Australia's hottest children's band as they sing and dance their way form space trips to pirate ships. Join Jeff, Murray, Greg and Anthony, as well as Wags the Dog, Officer Beaples, Zardo Zap and many more, for a ride you'll never forget. Start the car and honk the horn. customer 's review (What Happens When A Fascist Dictatorship Takes Power!)
(Stays Away From Its Main Subject.) It's a great shame that this historically significant film is so obscure - it currently has only one review, which unfortunately misses the point of the story! This is a devastating and historically accurate tale about what happens when fascism violently comes to power by overthrowing a democratically elected government. And the film gets personal! Anyone who has ever been a political activist will have shivers going up their spine while watching this poignant masterpiece! What's more disturbing is that events happen so fast, it's very hard to process the experience! Disbelief and denial of the magnitude of what is happening interferes with one's ability to make the appropriate decisions. Keep in mind making the wrong decision may cost you your life, or that of a family member. What makes it even more alarming is the realization that given the right set of circumstances, no democracy, including the United States, is immune to a violent overthrow!
While I did not experience the violent overthrow of Salvador Allende's government, I knew someone who was an eye-witness to General Pinochet's crimes while living in Santiago, Chile's capital. This person, who happened to be a Nun, was lucky. She was an American citizen, and a member of a religious order, and was allowed to evacuate to the United States. But before leaving, she witnessed the death and destruction first hand! To her, and hundreds of thousands people like her, this was not an abstract experience of watching a movie in the safety of one's home!
For those who would like to do further research on the subject I highly recommend these two groundbreaking books by Philip Agee: Inside the Company and On the Run Michael Cacoyannis closely choreographs the movements of actors in his films and this, in conjunction with his script for this flabbily constructed work, sadly gives the piece a lightweight feel, inappropriately distanced from the genuine citizenry for whom he purportedly feels sympathy, the entire film therefore going down to artistic defeat, not aided by unsuitable casting. Based upon a novel by American Caroline Richards, the setting is Chile in 1973 directly following the assassination of Marxist president Salvador Allende, when General Augusto Pinochet's military cartel, with United States backing, took over from the elected government, the action following events in the lives of a married upper case American expatriate couple, the Willings, and their close friends the Arayas, a Chilean family from the class of moneyed interests. Although highly dramatic socio-political circumstances form a strong background for the storyline, numerous psychosexual relationships among the characters occupy most of the director's attention, and although humiliating treatment of some women at the hands of Pinochet troops provides melodramatic interest, a viewer might wonder at the lack of any attempt to develop insights into the background of a situation that tore the nation apart, impacting the working class native population largely ignored by Cacoyannis. Shot in Greece, the film benefits from able camerawork, but some wayward casting, notably that of Randy Quaid as a goatish army corporal whose risible attempt at speaking Hispanic flavoured English provides one of many elements of the affair that one will prefer not to remember; Franco Nero is the most effective player at handling the stilted dialogue. A harshly cut 120 minute version has been distributed and is best avoided, since it only serves to increase the incoherence rife within this unsatisfying venture. customer 's review ("You shouldn't kiss a girl when you're wearing that gun... leaves a bruise")
(Noir with an endearing sense of nerdiness.)
(Confusing,But Love Those Wiscracks!)
(Film Noir at its Very Best)
('MY ATTITUDE DOESN'T SEEM TO IMPROVE') Filled with tart one-liners and sharp performances, MURDER, MY SWEET (aka "Farewell, My Lovely") is a good example of just how sublime film noir could be with the RKO Studios. Most people tend to regard Warner Brothers as the house of choice when it came to noir, but RKO cranked out some real doozies, too.
Dick Powell forever shed his wholesome, goody-goody image when he played hard-boiled Detective Philip Marlowe. Hired to track down the ex-wife of nutty stand-over man Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki), Marlowe's trail later leads him into an altogether more puzzling case involving a priceless jade necklace, the sultry second wife of a millionaire (Claire Trevor) and her lovely stepdaughter (Anne Shirley).
MURDER, MY SWEET is a complete ride from beginning to end. Although the plot is downright convuluted and confusing, the film is compelling largely because of Powell's performance and the snappy screenplay of John Paxton (based on the original novel by Raymond Chandler).
Audiences would have forever pegged Dick Powell for his tap-happy roles in Busby Berkeley musicals like "42nd Street" had the character of Marlowe not come along and allowed a new side of his incredible acting range to shine through. He's remarkable in this movie. Likewise this film also established radiant ingenue Anne Shirley (from "Anne of Green Gables" and "Stella Dallas") in a sophisticated new light, although her career sadly ended with this film. Claire Trevor, that perennial film noir femme fatale, doesn't disappoint.
Two thumbs up from me! As far as film noir goes, this is it. The contradiction of Raymond Chandler's gritty gumshoe Philip Marlowe comes across at the hands of Dick Powell far more easily than it did with either Bogart or Mitchum (who was in a remake of this film, years later). Powell's performance of the detective is lighter than others, and though he certainly doesn't evoke the feelings of menace that other actors do, I can't imagine anyone but him playing hopscotch with the tiles of a stately home.
Mike Mazurki's turn as Moose Malloy is fabulous - a real-life ex-wrestler turned meathead-for-hire-under-false-pretences. If you want a great strangulation, he's the man.
So why only three stars? As a film this is a beautiful work - the opening shots of a blindfolded Marlowe, appearing as if in front of a firing squad, are gorgeous. There's a lot of expertly-crafted noir stereotypical setups here. But the story seems particularly convoluted, and to not hang together too well. It's forgiveable in a book where your mind fills in the blanks, but on the screen it seems that something is lacking. It definitely helps if you've read Chandler's original before tackling this one.
One thing that could be a spoiler but isn't but sort of is: watch out for the drug scene. It's one of the most breathtakingly good:bad pieces of acting and camerawork I've seen. It's so close to genius and failure at once that its inclusion makes viewing of this film necessary. This is considered one of the classic film noirs ever made and some think THE film noir. In recognizing that before I had seen it, perhaps I was disappointed because I expected more. Yet, I still own this DVD and enjoy watching it about every 4-5 years. Why? Probably the cinematography and "Phillip Marlowe's" dialog.
What I found was a very confusing film, at least in the last third of the movie as everything started to be explained. It almost got ridiculous in the last 10 minutes when Dick Powell ("Marlowe") explained the whole story. He talked too fast and it was next to impossible to follow. I guess I will have to view this more often to understand it better, or find someone who can explain it for my feeble brain.
The best part of the film was the cinematography, which really comes to life on the DVD. Someone did a very nice job restoring this print for this disc. That, and the general dialog by Powell, were fascinating. You could make a short book with all the wise-guy remarks made by "Marlowe" in this film - a lot of great stuff.
I just wish they had made a simpler story and made it easier for the viewer to digest all the facts at the end.
RKO turned out some of the best film noir drama of the forties and fifties and did it with sound economy, capitalizing on multiple talent working in a coordinated fashion.
"Murder, My Sweet" directed by Edward Dmytryk falls into the above category. John Payton's script adaptation from Raymond Chandler's novel "Farewell, My Lovely" moves at a spellbinding pace as we see the world of detective Philip Marlowe, played by Dick Powell in a dramatic debut after a career as a song and dance man, unfold in Los Angeles. When he meets up with ex-con Moose Malloy, played by veteran pro wrestler and character actor Mike Mazurki, he becomes a marked man.
Powell's nemises are beautiful bad girl Claire Trevor and gang head Otto Kruger while Anne Shirley, as Trevor's stepdaughter, helps the detective find romance while providing him with the lowdown on the wayward blonde, who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
When Dick Powell made this movie his acting career astonishingly was at a very low ebb, but this movie helped revitalize the old song and dance man into a transformed 'noir' actor. He had a lot of help in this movie not only from an excellent script but also from some excellent actors. One of my favorites has always been Claire Trevor, and if she had not been identified, don't know that I would have ever recognized her as this dazzling, coniving blonde of the jade necklace.
Powell is given some very good, wise cracking lines, but underneath he is a teddy bear and that comes through at times, especially with Anne Shirley. One client says he doesn't care for Marlowe's (Powell's role) attitude, with Marlowe replying that he has had complaints about that before, but the attitude doesn't seem to improve. Along the way, and it is a confused way for much of the movie, Marlowe accuses or suspects nearly everyone in the cast, with the police always eyeing Marlowe as a possible suspect. Ring around the rosey, only death intervenes from time-to-time in this game. Everyone seems to have something to hide or some angle they are playing with Marlowe picking up easy money. As he says, some people are paying him to stay with the investigation, while others are paying him to drop the investigation. As many times as he is sapped and knocked out, one would think he would welcome grabbing the money and letting the thing solve itself. But as he says, ethics are involved, his mainly since he was originally hired to body guard a client, with that client turning up dead on Marlowe's watch. It's just another aspect of being a teddy bear underneath it all.
Rich good looking women, sleezy con men and thugs, a stolen jade necklace worth a cool hundred thousand never stolen, and plenty of guns leads to a full fledged Raymond Chandler group of writings brought to the Hollywood screen by RKO. When looking at 'noir' films it just doesn't get much better than this film.
If you haven't seen it you have missed a very good effort in both acting and writing.
Semper Fi. Dick Powell will forever be known as a 1930s crooner in archetypal musical comedies, but this career-changing role shows Powell at his best and remains perhaps the most faithful cinematic representation of Raymond Chandler's hard-boiled hero, Philip Marlowe, ever put on screen. In this adaptation ofFarewell, My Lovely, Powell's cynical, smart-talking private eye is hired by a dim ex-con (pug-nosed Mike Mazurki) to find his girl Velma, and by the prissy stooge of a blackmail victim to babysit him during a handoff. The meeting ends with the stooge's death, and Marlowe is immediately engaged by the owner of some jewels, the wily Mrs. Grayle (Claire Trevor), to recover them. As Marlowe navigates the dark, dangerous world of wartime L.A., splitting his search between high-society haunts and the cheap, smoky bars and flophouses of the inner city, he turns up one too many stones, winds up on the wrong end of a fist, and wakes up to a drug-induced nightmare that director Edward Dmytryk delivers with a mixture of surreal symbolism and sinister expressionism. Powell delivers screenwriter John Paxton's snappy lines and droll asides with hard-boiled cynicism, like someone not quite as tough as he talks; but it's Powell's innate vulnerability that makes this reluctant saint of the city so compelling. Dmytryk's shadowy style creates a visual equivalent to the web of intrigue Marlowe navigates, an almost perpetual world of night. One of the first greatfilms noirand an often-overlooked detective-movie classic.--Sean Axmaker Rerations < Murder, My Sweet [VHS] >

(Great DVD)
(Lasted through the years)
(awesome!!) I bought this for my 21 month old grandson and he liked it very much. My daughter (2) loves this DVD and the previews of other DVD's are whole songs so it's like having bonus features instead of advertizing. Cows, horses, sheep, wagon rides, chores and recreation - very well done. I bought this for my dd because of how much I loved it when I was a kid. She absolutely adores it- they basically go from song to song quickly enough to hold her attention.
I am a Grandmother now. My daughters had lots of videos they watched when they were younger but this one tops their MEMORIES.
I recently purchased for my new Grandbaby! I actually first saw this video when I used to babysit...15 years a go! I looked all over for it now that I have my own 1 1/2 year old son, and I was so happy when I finally found it. He absolutely loves it! He dances whenever it comes on and tries to imatate all the kids. It's great for teaching children about animals as well. It's a great alternative when you can't bear to watch Elmo one more time! From the first cock-a-doodle-doo to the last twinkling little star,A Day at Old MacDonald's Farmpulses joyfully with song, dance, and a barnyard full of activity. A passel of city kids arrives for a taste of sunny country life. Before night falls, they make a scrumptious breakfast, do chores around the mulberry bush, attend school with Mary's little lamb, and whoop it up at the old ball game. Their field-trip hosts include a high-stepping scarecrow, Gran and Gramps McDonald, and the usual four-legged farmy suspects. Together, this energetic cast belts out 10 perennial favorites, including "Skip to My Lou," "This Old Man," and, of course, the title song. A funky rock&roll score keeps the excitement building as one song piggybacks on the next. This delightful 30-minute show, produced in 1985, easily should appeal to little music lovers ages 7 and under.--Liane Thomas Join the kidsongs kids for a musical day on the farm and meet all of their animal friends. (Gina's Kitchen)
(Shirley Maclaine shines in Sweet Charity) I saw the original Broadway musical&went back stage as a kid to get autographs. This is a good rendition, but it is nowhere near what the Orig was. I do recommend this to others, as it is a classic&a fun movie. Gwen Verdon was supreme on Broadray, Shirley MacLaine does her best to replicate her. Requested by my mother-in-law she absolutely loved the movie. The songs were outstanding as you would expect from most high class musicals. And last but not least the price and prompt delivery were very much appreciated. I do not want to recreate the wheel regarding reviews, but SWEET CHARITY is a unique and entertaining movie summarized very well by the 5&4 star ratings. I would like to clarify some of the comments stated in the lesser reviews.
First, you have to remember this movie was made in the late 60's. You have to think about the context of the times; movie making was in it's infancy (or at leat toddler-hood), colorization was still new&you did not have computer enhancement&the cameras of today's technology. Then add to it all that Fosse had to deal with.
Second, this movie is based on a Broadway show w/Gwen Verdon in the lead&written by her husband at the time, Bob Fosse. It is always difficult bringing stage to the screen. And w/a star like Gwen Verdon, some of the character traits of SWEET CHARITY were already established. The dancing scenes&choreography of Fosse are one reason alone to acquire this movie for your personal library. Extensive dance scenes, including group dancing numbers, such as "Rich Man's Frug"&"The Rhythm of Life" were novel ideas. The choreography is so avante garde&fresh that THE GAP used parts of "Rich Man's Frug" in it's commerical's. The musical number, "Hey Big Spender" shows the seeds of Fosse's later hit "CABARET. Fosse was a genius and this movie was just the tip ice burg of his unique&creative vision. This movie also provides the opportunity to see a young Ben Vereen before the fame of PIPPIN. In addition, this movie allows one to see what an amazing dancer Shirley MacLaine was.
Third, you just gotta love Shirley MacLaine who's talent stretching from comedic dance musical such as SWEET CHARITY, to Oscar winning dramas such as THE TURNING POINT&TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. SWEET CHARITY is a quirky, silly story that warms you heart&Shirley's performance is memorable. Another quality movie showing a young MacLaine is Alfred Hitchock's WHAT TO DO ABOUT HARRY.
Forth, I didn't notice missing material, but there is additional footage of Sammy Davis Jr.'s performance of "The Rhythm of Life." I saw this move as a teenager, with pretty much the same observations as now. I purchased this DVD so I can watch some of my favorite musical numbers. If you are a Fosse&MacLaine fan buy this DVD. Not sure, then rent it. What is there not to like about Shirley McClain and Bob Fossee. We had to replace a old video tape which we wore out. Enjoyed it but wondered if Gwen Verdon should have continued her stage role onto the screen. I remember a serious faux pas when Julie Andrews was bypassed for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Loves a dream to a hostess in a seedy new york dance hall. From the neil simon play. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 03/04/2003 Starring: Shirley Maclaine John Mcmartin Run time: 149 minutes Rating: G Director: Bob Fosse After several years as the hottest musical director on Broadway, Bob Fosse made his film directorial debut with this movie version of his Broadway hit, which was based on Fellini'sNights of Cabiria. Shirley MacLaine is terrific as the proverbial hooker with the heart of gold, one who is convinced that she will find the right man if she just turns enough tricks. The Cy Coleman score is a solid one; the film is at its best when Fosse lets his cast of singer-dancers (which includes Chita Rivera, Paula Kelly, and Sammy Davis Jr.) unleash his leggy brand of choreography. While the film suffers from stylistic excesses of the period, you can see the seeds being planted for Fosse's future musical film forays inCabaretandAll That Jazz.--Marshall Fine Rerations < Sweet Charity >

plot alert: no one gets killed in this film, but i think a mule does go blind. if you like great musicals with excellent choreography, than this is not your film.and if you want to see the 3 stooges at their best, again this is not your movie. however, if you enjoyed 'mst3000'(imo, the best tv in the history of tv) than give this, and all the rest of these rifftrax a look see. hey, they're funnier than 99% of what's on the 'boob toob.'
During the Swing Parade craze of the 1940s, it was hard to turn your head without encountering a Swing Parade. With the popularity of Swing Parades soaring, a full length motion picture was inevitable. Unfortunately, the film we got was clearly rushed out to capitalize on the Swing Parade fad. How can we tell? There doesn't appear to be a single damn Swing Parade in the whole movie!Instead, we get the Three Stooges, who wouldn't know a Swing Parade if it bit them on the...Perhaps we're overreacting here. After all, a movie with mannish landlords, songs about blind mules, and Larry must be pretty ripe for mockery. And if it's calledSwing Paradebut does not feature any actual Swing Parades, then all the better! (Good for kids, good for moms!)
(Great GFCF alternative for kids!)
(Yummm!) My son is gluten free and casein free. These are great treat to have for lunches and special snacks. It's also nice they are egg free too.
This product is great for twins that have allergies to eggs, wheat, soy, and milk products. One of the best cookies out there. Would highly recommend. I love these cookies and so does my 2-year-old son. We both have gluten and dairy sensitivities and these allow us to have a pre-made cookie snack. Try the chocolate ones too, they are yummy too! These are the best gluten free, casein free sandwich cookies we have tried! Nice flavor, and the texture is decent, too. My daughter loves them. They don't have the nasty after taste or flavor that other GFCF cookies sometimes have. We will be buying these again - that's for sure! This is currently my *favorite* cookie. Good as is, but also holds up to dunking. It's not only gluten free but egg free as well (and casein free too). I can hardly keep my non-gluten free husband away from them as he, too, thinks they're delish! I told her never buy me these again if she loves me. Enough chemicals in it for a nuclear explosion.
It's also fish tank gravel texture.
I would not recommend this candy to my worst enemy. What can you say -- they're Nerds! I prefer the cherry flavor. Great to give out at BBQs or parties, and kids love them. customer 's review (Lime Pickles) We love lime pickles and no one seems to make them any more. I went on a search just to see what would come up. I couldn't believe it when this product appeared. I decided to try them and sure enough, they are just like the ones I loved as a child. Great product. Thanks. 3 Pint jars of Lime Pickles In our area they are sometimes called Sweet Lime Pickles, and they offer another glimpse into the old days. The Lime used in the process of preserving these pickles is a food grade version of what was used for making white-wash, plaster, and spreading on the fields. The Pennsylvania Dutch Country still has many of the old lime kilns dotting our countryside, although most of them have not been used for nearly 100 years. Our forefathers probably didnt know all the scientific reasons why this was an excellent way of making and keeping pickles, they just knew that it worked and that they taste great. These are a very crisp, green pickles have a delightfully dry, sweet balance. A sweet (not dill) pickle.

(My boy's favorite toy!)
(Dangerous toy for children)
(Great First Puzzle) This puzzle was perfect for my 1 yr old. Nice solid wooden pieces and very well made at a great price. Would highly recommend. My son received this Knob Puzzle as a gift for his first birthday, and he loves it! The pieces are very easy for him to manage, and despite the toy's simplicity, he can't get enough of it. He's partial to the horse, and insists on taking it to his crib each night (it's removed promptly when he fades out!). The puzzle provides more entertainment than I expected, and the excellent quality is consistent with the rest of the Melissa&Doug toys in our household. Overall, a great gift for small toddlers! I was excited to buy this puzzle for my young son and he enjoyed playing with it for the short time we had it. However, since the puzzle is made from cheap laminated/layered wood, the puzzle piece backings began to splinter and rip almost immediately. As such, this toy represents a pretty serious hazard to young children. It's not even well-designed: the pieces are very thick and tightly fitted into their slots, making it difficult to pull them out in any direction except directly upwards. Very disappointing overall. This was the best first introduction to puzzles for my daughter. She got this puzzle for her first birthday. With her love of animals, it was an immediate hit! The pieces were large and the large chunky knobs made them easy for her to hold. The painted picture underneath that correlates with the puzzle piece is fabulous! Although my daughter can't always get the pieces back, she is learning the dexterity skills she needs! It holds up well to teething, although the wood is soft enough to show indentations over time. My daughter's favorite hobby so far is banging the pieces together! Can you find a home for these barnyard animals' Toddlers will love this super-sized, solid-wood puzzle with chunky half-inch-thick pieces -- it's the perfect first puzzle. Extra-large knobs make it easy for small hands to play with each brightly colored puzzle piece. Matching full-color pictures are hiding underneath each piece. Measures 12.5"H x 12.5"W x 1.7"D. (They Love Them)
(Slightly disappointed)
(Fantastic buy)
(18-month old loves it!!!) I am very happy with the purchase of this chair. Before buying this particular chair, I was going back and forth whether to get a heavier stationary chair or this foam based chair. I am glad that I chose this one. My son is 23 months and drags the chair around the house to read his books. I have a 17 month and 3 year old. We have been looking for toddler chairs and thought that these looked comfortable and fun. Our girls LOVE them! They sit in their chairs while watching TV/ looking at books. The chairs are light enough for them to pick up and move themselves. The chairs are very stable and do not tip over very easily. We love the bright colors! The P'kolino chair is cute with vibrant colors -- perfect for toddlers except for the fact that the chair cover isn't washable. On the first day my daughter had her chair, she had a spill. She recently had another spill. I need to create a chair cover for it which defeats the purpose of the beautiful color. My daughter is rather small for a 20 month old so we thought she could grow into this chair. To our surprise, she was the perfect size for it. My only cause for apprehension was the price but after checking other similar chairs online and in stores, I got over it.
This chair is all it is advertised to be. The orange color is vibrant and my daughter loves it. I got it when she was 14 months old and she has taken to it. It's so light she can lift and flip it. For whatever reason, sometimes she enjoys flipping it and sitting on the backrest and resting her back in the seat. Whatever works for her :) She walks backwards to fit her teeny bum into the seat when she doesn't want to take her eyes off the TV. She climbs in and over and around it and because the edges are soft and rounded... no worries. It's a great buy and I know we will enjoy it for many years. Right now it's her TV watching chair, in future it'll be her little reader. We looked everywhere for the perfect chair for our daughter. The reviews for this one were all positive, so we chose it. I am VERY happy! My daughter LOVES it. She has really needed a place to sit (she can't get on the couch by herself yet). She was thrilled. I highly recommend this chair. P'Kolino Little ReaderFabulously cozy, supremely stable, and fashionably funky! This feathery light chair, with its two pockets and a handle to take it all wherever they go, will soon be your child's favorite. Perfectly sized for toddlers, this sturdy tag-a-long chair is optimized for little readers. Comfy foam, supple fabric, arm rests, and book pockets create the perfect environment for relaxing with a good book or just a little down time. The wide-base and strong angular lines make this chair not only attractive but extremely stable. (Webkinz Hippo) I have a couple Webkinz and I recently ordered this one. I HIGHLY reccomend this praticuler webkinz because it is sooooooo cute. Right when I opened it up i was "webkinz struck" by its cuteness. dont hesitate to get this. Probably the cutest thing ive ever seen! My parrents got me a "Webkinz Hippo" for Christmas. I logged it on and was hooked. It comes with this cute little bathtub. Then my grandma got me a pig and "Black and White Cat" and I just bought a "Ally Cat", but my hippo is my favorite. Take my advice and buy it BUY IT BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!! I think webkinz are great toys. You can get on the internet and make them come to life. They're also good for just snuggling with. You can do math, science, Art, and social studies on the internet program. My brother also has one (A bull frog). I think webkinz is some what educational. I hope my review was helpful. Thanks, Kali. Two of the hippos were ordered. One of the hippos was for a grown woman and one for a 13 year old girl. Both of the ladies received the gift with a giggle and a feeling of joy. The hippos have been hugged and given places of honor in the bedrooms of the receivers. My 6 and 9 year old children love Webkinz. The Hippo has been on the wish list for a while and has proven to be a favorite. It has been slept with and played with every day since Christmas Eve. Thanks for a great product! Discover a virtual world with Webkinz pets. Webkinz animals come with a special Internet code so your child can interact with it online. (Wonderful everyday recipes)
(Recipes are not sugar free)
(Stevia Sweet Recipies) This is not a bad cookbook, but it is a lot of work to make most of the dishes in it. The recipes are very homey and old fashioned. I also found out that I don't really like the taste of stevia, so that doesn't help either. Just what I was looking for&at an affordable price! Due to aspartame poisoning, I needed to use a natural, no calorie sweet product for my baking. Stevia is the answer! This book gives me the proper amount of Stevia to use when I make lemonade from my fresh lemons, apple dishes from my fresh apples and all those goodies I crave! This is a must have in everyone's cooking repetroire! Loosing weight and feeling healthier without feeling deprived! User friendly. Many everyday recipes. Lots of tips for success. Mainly uses Stevia Extract powder.
I was very disappointed in this book. Approximately 80% of the recipes contain sugars in the form of fructose from fruit or vegetables. Apples, oranges, carrots, corn, onion, dates, cherries, bananas, etc. are all high in fructose. I guess I was hoping to see more recipes not containing any sugars. I purchased this book as a gift. The recipient said it was great. I may get one for myself too. The author offer health-conscious readers 168 creative recipes using the herb Stevia as a sweetener. In addition to dozens of mouth-watering dessert suggestions, this book provides a tantalizing array of breakfast, main course, salad and side-dishes - all sugar-free! (Cider, nature's gift to a thirsty world)
(Useful)
(All the answers)
(Recommended for homebrewers interested in farmhouse cider) If this were advertised as a book on "how to establish a Cidery" which happened to have info useful to the homebrewer I would have cut it a lot more slack, but as advertised it's deeply disappointing. While I did enjoy the level of detail regarding some aspects of brewing such as the importance of acidity, the 50 page "how to start your own orchard" section was a complete waste of time, as were the neurotically detailed breakdowns of common apple types by region. Anyone looking to start an entire orchard should perhaps be pointed at another more thorough text so that that 50 pages could be reclaimed for, oh, I dunno, brewing? It's pretty badly organized considering it's a third edition, and furthermore it's highly repetitive.
Any brew text that chooses to devote multiple chapters lovingly detailing (and in some cases diagramming) the multitudinous types of equipment used to reduce apples to juice and then repeatedly recommends MOUTH STARTING a siphon for bottling has its head screwed on the wrong way. Fermenting methodologies listed are limited to wild open fermentation or sulfiting the living daylights out of things, and the idea that one might use different yeasts is barely acknowledged.
The only thing to be said for adding this book to your library is its section on "beyond cider" which included a discussion of vinegar, canning, cooking with cider and (perhaps most interestingly) distilling Apple Jack and Apple Brandy. While the authors are very careful to state repeatedly that the production of hard alcohol (even via freeze distillation) is most definitively illegal in the US and that these are not directions (merely information in the interest of completeness) they then go on to give a fairly complete basic rundown on home distillation via multiple methods (including tables, construction details, and diagrams) and the best ways to finish products gained from these methods. Not to say this has any use to the homebrewer either, but at least it's interesting. I've been making cider for over thirty years and my family for generations. I've learned a few things about cider I never thought about before and I'm a stickler for details. Novices should consider this as their number one source for information unless they can get in touch with me. ;-) We used this to brew, but with some brewing experience and a fair sized orchard to work with. Also a delight to read. Talk about a breath of fresh air! Our retirement to orchard country left us wondering what to do with the buckets of apples from the trees on our acreage ... and Proulx and Nichol's book gave us all the answers.
It's an easy cover-to-cover read in layman's language, yet it's also good for reference (the many tabs I've installed in our copy make it look like a porcupine).
Whether you're a novice or an old-timer at cider-making, this excellent information-packed book should be in your library. [Review written in Jul 2005]
From a home winemaking standpoint, this book is fairly solid offering - as evidenced by the fact that it's now reached it's 3rd edition (as of this reading, I only own copies of the 1st and 2nd editions).
The authors do a good job of covering all of the essential bases on this topic ... including apple cultivation, the selection of apple varietal blends for making various types of cider, an overview of the pressing and brewing process, an overview of common cider&sanitation problems, how to bottle, etc. I was also impressed by the reasonable level of competence demonstrated in their sections on sulfiting and pH/Acid balancing - topics that all too many amateurs (and more than a few novice pros) gloss over, or naievely (and maddeningly) avoid altogether.
I was blessed with having grown up with a local {fresh-sweet} cidery within easy driving distance, and I've made my own hard ciders and cysers on more than a few occasions ... and this book was very helpful when I was learning the ropes.
I only have a few minor complaints:
1) PERRY: It would have required only minimal effort to expand to book to also cover perry (cider made from pears).
2) NON-DRY SPARKLING HARD CIDER: Most homebrewers who make sparkling cider for the first time invariably wish to retain some residual sweetness in their finished product. Commercial brewers have access to techniques like glycol-chilled centrifuges, large-scale plate filtration, and chaptization combined with force carbonation. Homebrewers on the otherhand, who attempt to bottle a semi-dry cider with the usual 'classic' method of adding priming sugar to a freshly fermented semi-dry cider frequently end up playing Russian roulette with bottles that begin exploding after a few days/weeks/months. It's not pretty. I dont remember (it's been a few years since my last reading of the book) if the earlier editions included information on plate filtration and force carbonation, or, if such was absent, if it's since been added to the 3rd edition. The bottom line is that without force carbonation, the only type of sparkling hard cider you can make with any degree of reliability is bone dry.
3) MINIMUM ORDERS: Prospective homebrewers who approach a local cidery with a request for a custom pressing of a custom blend of apples are usually greeted with either blank stares or with a polite nod, followed by an explanation that they have to meet a certain minimum order size. In the case of my local cidery, the minimum order they'll accept for a custom pressing is 100 gallons ... which far exceeds the capacity of most home brewers (who are usually interested in 5-15 gals a pop). The authors can, and should, have given readers a polite heads up on such things, so that they can be prepared for it and line up some fellow homebrewers to do a group buy-in/brew-in. It's a hard hobby for suburbanites like me. I'm sure I wouldn't have the same problem if I lived in more rural areas ... particularly places like Vermont, Southern England, and Normandy France, all of whom have strong cidermaking traditons.
4) PASTEURIZATION: I dont recall if the authors covered the trend adequately in their earlier editions, and I dont know if they addressed it adequately in their latest edition, but there's a growing problem confronting prospective homemakers of small-batch hard cider. In recent years, in response to a damnably lawsuit happy public, many local cideries have stopped selling unpasteurized fresh sweet-cider to the general public ... most cideries pasturize their cider prior to sale now. Here's an example of a local cidery's announcement. Unfortunately for homebrewers like me, the pasteurization process weakens/mutes (or destroys completely, depending on the method used) many of the delicate flavor nuances that don't emerge from a sweet cider until AFTER you ferment off most of the sugar. It's like playing a scratch-n-sniff game ... you sometimes don't know if the result is good until weeks/months *after* you ferment off the sugar masking all the fine nuances.
In any case, even though (if I recall) the authors gloss over a few minor areas, they do give you most of the tools you need to make great cider. For those who've never had the pleasure of experiencing it, the difference between a hard cider made from unpasteurized juice (from custom blended single varietal apples), as compared to that made from pastaurized juice from generic all-purpose 'sweet' cider blends is akin to the difference between a fine artisan cheese and an insipid block of velveeta. It's worth the effort.
Bottom line: I can firmly recommend this book to any homebrewers who wish to experiment with cider. It's a good choice, for both amateur and hardcore (pun intended) brewers alike, The Pilgrims drank cider as they sailed to America aboard the Mayflower. John Adams had a tankard of cider every morning at breakfast. After a long day on safari, Ernest Hemingway liked to kick back beside the campfire with a glass of cider. And Robert Frost saluted his favorite beverage with a poem titled ?In A Glass of Cider.? Neck and neck with brewing beer at home is the resurgence of making cider. Whether sweet, hard, blended, or sparkling, trend watchers say cider, once the preferred beverage of early America, could very well become the drink of the future. (Hard cider is the fastest growing segment of the beverage industry.) Keeping pace with the commercial cider producers are small-scale and individual cider makers who have discovered how easy it is to make their own. After all, the only ingredient you need is an apple. In this updated edition of Cider, Annie Proulx and Lew Nichols take you step-by-step through the process that renders fruit into a refreshing drink. In addition to learning about the equipment you?ll need to make a glorious cider, Proulx and Nichols also discuss the pros and cons of various types of apple presses ? from traditional heavy grinders to sleek hydraulic presses. You?ll also learn about the glass bottles vs. wooden barrels debate; how to filter, fine, and rack your cider; and where and how to store it. Proulx and Nichols provide detailed recipes for making six types of cider: still, sparkling, champagne, barrel, French, and flavored, with advice on which apples to use to achieve a tart, aromatic, astringent, or neutral quality in your cider. In fact, this book is brimming with expert advice on cidermaking. If you want to plant your own apple orchard, this book has an entire chapter that lists which cultivars of apples thrive in which parts of the United States and Canada, along with each cultivar?s characteristics and when it is ready for harvesting. Another chapter explains how to care for an orchard, from improving the soil to pruning and thinning the trees to fighting off pests and wildlife. Once a cidermaker has learned how to make excellent cider, he or she is likely to look for further fields t o explore. With that in mind, the authors include a chapter on making cider vinegars and brandy and using cider in cooking. Finally, Proulx and Nichols walk you through the latest federal regulations covering the production and sale of homemade cider in the United States and Canada, and they familiarize you with the kind of impact state and provincial laws can make. The clear, simple language, numerous illustrations, and detailed step-by-step directions make it easy for even novices to become skilled cidermakers. This revised edition of the classic handbook is a complete guide for anyone who wants to discover the pleasure of making ? and drinking ? fresh cider. customer 's review (functional but flawed) The spinner works fine but the included marker was dead on arrival. To make things worse the gaurd template does not work with a sharpie rendering this thing a 40 dollar waste. I guess you could go out and buy felt tipped markers until your find one that fits, but they should have engineered this thing to work with the worlds best selling permanent markers.
No problems with the seller. Ever wonder why golfs best players sometimes have a line on their ball? This great golf gizmo finds any golf balls true balance equator in 30 seconds, improving a ball's accuracy and distance off the tee and when putting. Utilized by over a million golfers worldwide, Check-GO Pros patented spin balance technology improves game performance by balance calibrating any golf ball before play. While spinning at over 10,000 RPM, this amazing device finds a ball's center of balance and draws an equator along it. This balance equator represents what is referred to as the "sweet spot" of any golf ball. By playing aligned with the balance equator, you will hit straighter and farther while reducing hooks and slices. Nearly every golf ball manufactured is not perfectly balanced.
