『"Cars" is definitely a popular Disney/Pixar classic and in terms of quality, has received the highest of rankings when it was released on Blu-ray back in 2007. In 2009, the "Ultimate Cars Gift Pack" comes with the Blu-ray plus the original DVD and 2 exclusive cars (Cruisin' Lighting McQueen and Rescue Squad Mater) with custom Ransburg paint. These items are highly collectible and If you are looking for a holiday gift, especially for someone who owns a Blu-ray player, a die-hard "Cars" fan and loves Disney/Pixar films, you can not go wrong with this gift pack! Definitely recommended!

In 2006, the seventh Disney/Pixar film "Cars" was released in theaters. Needless to say, the film was a major hit as it was nominated for two Academy Awards, has made over $461 million worldwide.

In fact, the film was so popular that merchandise is still sold in department stores today and the cars have been popular toys that have made over $5 billion in sales.

Needless to say, "Cars" was not just a box office success, it is one of Disney/Pixars biggest money making titles that is loved by critics and fans that easily ensured a sequel for a planned release in 2011.

In 2009, in time for the holidays is the release of "Cars - Ultimate Cars Gift Pack" which is a great release for those who have now jumped aboard in purchasing a Blu-ray player and a Blu-ray which was released in 2007 and has received nothing but magnificent reviews.

"Cars" is a film directed by John Lasseter ("Toy Story" films, "A Bug's Life") and co-directed by Joseph Ranft ("Monsters, Inc.", "Finding Nemo", "A Bug's Life", "The Incredibles") and features a screenplay by Lasster, Ranft, Dan Fogelman ("Bolt", "The 12th Man"), Kiel Murray, Phil Lorin and Jorgen Klubein ("A Bug's Life", "Mulan", "Pocohontaas", "The Lion King").

The film revolves around a popular rookie named Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson, "Bottle Rocket", "Marley&Me") who races in the Piston Cup stock car racing competition.

Lightning McQueen is quite arrogant and not much of a team-player. He doesn't trust his pit crew and sure enough, when he gets into a 3-car tie, the race would be determined a week later at the Los Angeles International Speedway.

While on the road to practice in California, he pushes his big rig Mack to travel all early morning but when a group of cars start becoming reckless around Mack, Lightning McQueen rolls out of the back of the big rig and ends up in the countryside.

When Lightning McQueen goes to find Mack, he ends up in a small town of Radiator Springs. But when he gets into a problematic situation with the local Sheriff (he tears up the main road), Lightning is arrested and put in jail.

The town's judge and doctor Doc Hudson (voiced by Paul Newman, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "The Hustler", "Nobody's Fool") wants him out of town but the local lawyer Sally Carrera (voiced by Bonnie Hunt, "The Bonnie Hunt Show") insists that Lightning to do community service.

And thus, Lightning must spend time with the locals of Radiator Springs where he gets to learn more about himself, making new friends such as Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, "Blue Collar TV"), Ramone (voiced by Cheech Marin, "Lost", "Born in East LA", "Race to Witch Mountain"), Luigi (voiced by Tony Shaloub, "Monk", "Wings") and many more. But also Lightning possibly discovering love.

"Cars" is an exciting, hilarious and well-cast film featuring beautiful animation from Pixar and looks and sounds incredible via HD on Blu-ray!

VIDEO&AUDIO:

"Cars" on Blu-ray is presented in 1080p High Definition (2:39:1) and the picture quality of the film is absolutely vibrant. Colors are absolutely beautiful as you can see the nice sheen of the cars and the reflections of the cars. You can see the detail on the rust stains on Mater and for the most part, if you put in your DVD, you can see how much of a difference the film looks in HD via Blu-ray over its DVD counterpart. Vibrant colors, more detail and overall, a beautiful video transfer with no blemishes, compression artifacts whatsoever.

Audio is presented in English 5.1 (uncompressed, 48 kHz/24-Bit) and the racing segments really utilize the surround channels but also the LFE. It's one thing to have the nice clear dialogue and music through the front and center channels but to hear the cars speeding on the raceway and zooming and hearing through the surrounds is fantastic. Crashes bring out the booms and the audience on the race track can be heard on the surround channels. Overall, a solid lossless audio soundtrack!

Subtitles are in English SDH.

As for the DVD, the DVD is featured in widescreen (2:39:1) and is enhanced for 16×9 televisions. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound EX and Dolby Digital 2.0. Subtitles are presented in English SDH.

SPECIAL FEATURES

"Cars - Ultimate Cars Gift Pack" contains the original Blu-ray released in Nov. 2007 but also comes with the original DVD plus 2 exclusive cars (Cruisin' Lightning McQueen and Rescue Squad Mater) with custom Ransburg paint.

The Blu-ray special features are presented in 1080p and 1080i High Definition and also 480i Standard Definition with English 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital. Also, with English subtitles.

DISC 1:

* Cine-Explore - Cine-Explore allows the viewer to watch the film with interactive audio commentary by director John Lasseter. You can see storyboards during the commentary and also see the shorts and deleted scenes as well.

- Radiator Springs - (5:23) Behind-the-scenes of Pixar and trying to make the world of "Radiator Springs" seem believable.

- Animation and Acting - (5:15) Scott Clark and Doug Sweetland (both have the title of Supervising Animator) talk about the character animation and how the characters must have a soul.

- Real World Racing: Getting Geeky with the Details - (5:29) Those who love "Cars" talk about how they love the details in the film since so many other films tend to not cover car racing that well. So, director John Lasseter (who loves cars) made sure that the details were right on the film and professionals talk about how happy they were that Lasseter wanted to get the details correctly for an animated film.

- Hudson Hornet - (2:44) Director John Lasseter talks about his first impression of the Hudson Hornet and how it was the fastest car of its day and then realizing how innovative, how powerful and how fast this car was. Others talk about how significant the car was.

- Graphics - (3:34) The various graphics and product stickers used on the film for each car. Graphic designers talk about the various logos that were used from brands, food, restaurants, products, etc.

- Darrel Waltrip Museum Tour - (7:13) Director John Lasseter visits the Darrel Waltrip Museum and takes a look at the various cars in the museum and learn some of the history behind those cars from Darrel Waltrip.

* Carfinder Game - A game in which you select the cars at a bottom row while watching the film and try to get the best score.
* Deleted Scenes - (14:00) Five deleted scenes which includes: Community Service, Top Down Truck Stop, Lost, Motorama Girls and Traffic School featuring opening commentary by director John Lasseter. Deleted scenes are from pre-production sketches (created 3-4 years before the film was released in theaters) are shown.
* One Man Band - (4:33) Featured in HD, this featurette is a Pixar animation of a man with many instruments (ala a One Man Band) and competes with another musician in order to get the coin of a young boy who wants to donate.

JUDGMENT CALL:

"Cars" was definitely an amazing animated film when it came out back in 2007 and in 2009, the film is still a classic and its so popular that toys for "Cars" are still being offered in department stores which is rare to see for an animated film.

I loved the film when it first came out and the film still holds up today and continues to be quite entertaining. The picture and audio quality of "Cars" in High Definition is still magnificent but of course since the original Blu-ray was released in 2007, the lossless audio soundtrack is presented in English 5.1 uncompressed (48 kHz/24-Bit) instead of the current 5.1 or 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio lossless soundtrack that Pixar films are offered in today's Blu-ray releases. But still, it's uncompressed audio and the lossless audio soundtrack of this Blu-ray release is still fantastic. And of course, picture quality is still outstanding.

As for the "Ultimate Cars Gift Pack", the release is right on time for the holidays. With many people now moving to Blu-ray and many Disney/Pixar fans knowing that "Cars" is one of those must-have films to own, Disney is offering a gift pack that includes a DVD (which is great for the kids during long commutes) and two exclusive cars with custom Ransburg paint.

Really, there's nothing negative that can be said about "Cars - Ultimate Cars Gift Pack". If you have know someone who is new to Blu-ray and is a Disney/Pixar fan, this is a wonderful holiday gift to give. It's a high quality release that is definitely recommended!』

『This is lots of fun but will take awhile to learn all the ins and outs.』

『Our family loves regular Monopoly. We don't even mind how long it usually takes because we have a dedicated game table and can leave a game out for days. We were intrigued by Monopoly City. We've played it several times now. It took two "practice games" before we felt comfortable with the rules - most of which are an improvement over the regular game. City moves much quicker than the regular version. We've just completed a 3.5 hour game which ended when only one player was liquid. That's pretty quick, for Monopoly.

However, some tweaks are still needed. City includes new pieces, called Bonus Buildings (red pieces) and Hazards (black pieces - seriously, must the "bad" pieces be black?) that impact the value of one's buildings and rent charged. There are two additional pieces (stadiums and railroads) that are also red. IMO, they should have been a different color as it does get confusing (the railroad, the bonus wind farm and bonus water tower are very similar in shape and identical in size and color but only two of them impact rent). Also, in City, improvements are built in the middle of the board so players must roll the dice outside of the board. Ok, fine, we could manage that - but some of our taller buildings still toppled from time to time. Also, the properties are located in the middle of the board. In some occasions they are not close to their corresponding place on the outside of the board. This will take some adjustment on our part.

We also find the electronic buzzer (used to determine how many properties one may buy on one's turn and to time auctions) to be annoying.

We are positive on the game but feel that these issues will be noted quickly and a new version of City will be out soon!』

『after many years of Monopoly play, the old version has become tired&somewhat boring. this update&makeover makes Monopoly interesting again. at first, the new pieces seem complicated, but once u get into the game, u can see the basic Monopoly game in there.

the ability to buy houses/hotels which are now buildings&skyscrapers right away without owning the whole color group makes the game start up quicker. the new hazards&bonus buildings add an extra dimension for play as well as the new twist for railroads.

the new beeper/timer also adds fun&the expanded layout&taller buildings add a nice new visual element to gameplay.

my only gripe is the print on the deed&chance cards is rather small.

but overall, a great make over of an old favorite.』

『My son has used his leapster for about 1 year now. It started freezing up 2-3 months after we bought it. This wasn't happening too much, as we would just restart it and it would work fine. I should have sent it in to get it replaces but I didn't. We are having problems with it right now as it restarts with cartridge games for some reason. I have submitted a question to leapfrog and am awaiting an answer. I suspect we need to buy him another unit.

My 4 year old son loves it and plays the games all the time in the car and at home. It keeps him busy in the car on long trips too, or if we are in a restaurant and he gets bored. The cartridge games are a bit expensive but it gives the unit some flexibility from the rather boring built in games it comes with. The games are easy to lose as well for young children, as we have lost one of the cartridge games that we bought. I would definitely suggest buying the AC unit to plug this in when you can as it goes through batteries VERY quickly. Besides the games being expensive I would suggest this unit very much. I am not sure if my problems of freezing and restarting are a normal complaint with this unit or not, but with the education and enjoyment my son gets out of playing it I will be fixing it or buying another one for him.』

『My 9 yr old son is very much into Star Wars Legos right now and saved up earnings to buy this. Like all legos, how durable can it really be? While he put it together, I found I had to go back and fix/correct a couple things because it effected the overall sturdiness and he wasn't precise when originally putting it together. And as his lego stuff is all over his room (and you can't fold it up and put it away easily)it does get knocked a bit and inadvertently stepped on by his younger brother. So we have to backtrack and fix. It's educational in the sense that he uses his imagination when he's got all his lego stuff out.』

As seen in the film Star Wars: The Clone Wars -- in which the heroic Jedi Knights try to restore peace to the Galaxy as more and more members of the Republic fall under the influence of the Dark Side -- the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser provides an action-packed narrative setting to inspire imaginative play.

Every detail of the Republic flagship is packed into this 20-inch-long model, which includes a front panel that opens to reveal Palpatine's quarters, a hidden cannon under the wings, a drop-bomb launcher, an escape pod, and more. The Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser comes complete with five mini figures: Chancellor Palpatine, two of his elite Senate bodyguards, one Clone Trooper pilot, and one Clone Trooper gunner.

Building the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser
With 1,170 pieces and two colorful instruction booklets, the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser took our two adult testers approximately three-and-a-half hours to construct. The majority of the pieces come in shades of gray, so approaching construction requires a bit or organization and discipline. But once building is started, detailed step-by-step illustrations make assembly straightforward.

Overall, this set scores an excellent rating for its clever design elements. Just when you think you've discovered all the hidden weapons and command posts, you stumble across another. Our favorite features are the Palpatine mini figure -- complete with cloth cape and wrinkled brow -- the sliding gunner, the hidden Clone Trooper cockpit, the escape pod, the bomb dropper, and the Chancellor's enormous command center.

Finally, most of all, our testers enjoyed the way the narrative of this set allowed them to reenact the ship-to-ship combat seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They also appreciated that the storyline is simple enough to make the set entertaining, whether or not your child has seen the film.

The console has a comfortable, curved shape, although it may be a tad large and heavy for smaller hands. It features a full-color touch screen and sound that's a far cry better than the beeps of old-school handheld consoles. (Parents will appreciate the volume control and a jack for headphones!) Control and manipulate the console with the included stylus and with the videogame-style D pad and other buttons.

We found the initial set-up to be relatively easy: install the four required AA batteries, and navigate through the self-explanatory screens to create user profiles for up to 3 children (which come in handy for accessing online features). After this quick set-up, a menu screen will appear, where you can choose to play the pre-loaded games, go online, or insert a game cartridge.

Fun and Learning
Leapster 2 games are designed to grow with your child ages 4 through 8. The console is pre-loaded with two games: The "Dragons to the Rescue! Learning Game," is a "video game" type activity with four different levels, the first helping kids identify letters and numbers, the most advanced giving them spelling and multiplication practice, all while navigating a dragon past monstrous storm clouds and scrambling to collect magic crystals. The "Creativity Castle Art Studio" is a rather low-tech art program. Players can select a background scene to "color" using the stylus and "decorate" with fun animated stamps. While it does foster creativity, this program is somewhat clumsy -- your Paint program on your PC does a much better job. But "Dragons" was fun enough to keep even an adult tester enjoyably diverted.

Unfortunately, an SD card is required for taking advantage of much of what the Leapster 2 has to offer -- which is a drawback, because it must be purchased separately. Without the SD card, which offers more memory, you cannot save artwork, download new games, or take advantage of the online "Learning Path," which will be available August 2008. (This online program allows you to register and upload your children's Leapster 2 profiles to show you their learning activities and their progress.)

In the meantime, without the SD card, you can still purchase game cartridges. And you still can plug your console -- with the included USB cable -- into your PC for your children to view and print "rewards" for completing different game levels (for Dragons to the Rescue, they're certificates of achievement) or to print pictures to color with actual crayons (to encourage some "old-fashioned" creativity!) You must first install the Leapster 2 software on your computer, which comes on the included CD-ROM.

Monopoly City is exactly like classic Monopoly in lay out, rules, and gameplay--roll the dice, move your character around the board, and try not to spend too much time in jail or go bankrupt! However Monopoly City has also made several neat changes, with newly named properties, new monetary values, futuristic buildings, and new playing cards.

Whereas with the original version of Monopoly Park Place was one of the most prestigious properties to own--with Monopoly City you will be striving to acquire a permit for the fancy Fortune Valley. (Super Cute Pretend Tea Set)
『My daughter got this for her birthday, and we've had so much fun with it! It is a pretend set though - the cups have two holes that were used to attach them to the cardboard backing, so they can't be used to hold tea. As a pretend set though, it's the best one I've seen. It sings cute songs and comes with petit fours to "snack" on. AND it says please and thank you - as a mom, I love the manners part :)』

『After you get past all the safety latches on the elmo live encore you will be amazed at how life like they have made elmo in comparison to some of the other versions(rock n roll elmo and limbo elmo come to mind). One thing that I consider negative is that his speaking/singing/instrumental voice is loud. For a toy that doesn't travel, and is meant to be watched, and poked it doesn't seem an appropriate volume. I would hate for someone to scream a short story at me. Second, his body is kind of hard plastic so he is not snuggable, I would have thought that they would have fixed that from the first version, but I guess they didn't have enough time to add some stuffing. A suggestion would be to add some clothes to him, maybe an infant coat, if you want to snuggle with him. Although his jokes aren't funny, the fact that he has crickets chirping and then laughs at himself is definitely funny. This toy is just entertaining, and it doesn't need to be anything else. I can't see anyone learning anything from it, maybe if he had interactive question answer that would be more helpful, but when they create that it probably wont be worth the price they want to charge. The mechanism is quieter than the first version, or else they just raised the volume on the speaker, but either way it is less noticeable. All in all I think it is a great toy if you can get it at a discount, not worth the original price. We purchased it for forty nine ninety nine, and I can live with that.』

『This is one amazing toy. I'm not sure of the exact height. I forgot to read that part, but my guess is 18 to 20 inches. So to little toddlers it will appear to be playmate size. The only reason I even know about this toy is because my 5 year old niece has one and I saw a demonstration. It is a very life-like animated entertainer. He tells stories, sings songs, sits on a provided stool, crosses his legs, mouth moves in sync with talking and singing. If you knock him over he'll say something like "Oops! Elmo fell down" and when you pick him up he says "You're my best friend". Build a little stage. Gather the little ones together. Elmo will provide a wonderful show. I think it takes about 10 minutes for Elmo to go through his whole routine. I'm considering buying one for myself.』

『I have tried other microscopes and was very disappointed with the results. This microscope however is great! The price is very reasonable, it is very sturdy, and it is easy to adjust to view your specimens. The eye piece takes a little getting used to, if you put your eye too close you will see your eyelashes when you blink. I found that using my thumb and forefinger to make a circle then resting it over the top of the eye piece and then resting my eye on my hand with the rest of my fingers on the eye piece tube works well. Now, I can look through the eye piece without getting to close. I love being able to view the specimens with the above light and the below light which allows you to see different aspects of the specimen. I have found that using the above light shows a lot more detail of the specimens, it really makes the specimens sort of come to life. I ordered pre-made slides which one is of an ant and when I look at it with the above light it is amazing. Even hair looks amazing. I am very happy with my purchase and can't wait to share it with the kids.

『In my quest to look for a decent microscope, I found that most were far too expensive. A parent gets caught up in "how much can you get for your money" or the worries of "will it be worth the money?" This microscope is excellent for the price. You can see details on slides easily with each of the magnification pieces. We even put a sample of skin underneath and the cells could be seen. The box comes with dyes, blank slides, tweezers, and many other items. It's excellent for young children as well as adults. It's absolutely perfect if you are homeschooling. It's light, portable, uses batteries so you can go outside to be near samples, etc. The first thing that will initially throw you off is the box that the scope arrives in. It looks like a toy and gives you the feeling as if you've just wasted your money. But the actual item is of great quality! Don't get scared and purchase an expensive scope when this one will do what you need and want.』

『I bought this for my son's 9th birthday after reading many glowing reviews. It comes with a packet of prepared slides, slide covers, stain, scalpel, forceps, and a few other accessories. The microscope has been a treasure for us and we have all enjoyed it, including my 6-year-old son. My biggest disappointment with it is that there have been many specimens which we could not get to come into focus except using the "10x" objective. The other two seem a little unnecessary when so often only the 10x works.

A few days ago, after warning the kids a million times to be extremely careful with the microscope, I unfortunately knocked it off a shelf from a height of about 3 feet. The black scope at the top was broken off. We taped it back onto the base and incredibly, the scope still seems to work exactly as it did before. It actually concerns me a little bit that it works just as it did before, but I won't complain.

Somebody mentioned how easily the slides can be broken by accidentally lowering the objective onto the slide. This is true. Several have been broken.

Overall, we love this item and I think it has sparked my boys' interest in science and microbiology.』
