(Excellent)
(This is my favorite toy my son has ever had!) Bought this for my son because he saw it in the store and begged us for weeks. He was sooo excited to get it for his 4th birthday but it's been a disappointment. We tried adjusting it but it's very heavy and he just doesn't like wearing it. Believe the label when it says 5 and up! Excellent product, excellent quality, fulfills the dreams of a child in becoming his favorite idol. Excellent service from seller This toy is so cool! It adjusts easily and perfectly so that my son and I can both wear it comfortably with only 1 minute of adjustment time. My son LOVES this and so do I. I can't wait to wear it as I go through the drive through at Starbucks Monday! (Not while driving...Ill just put it on right before I get to the window). It is very well made and I swear it looks like it is good enough quality to have been a real movie prop. Very nice! Definaly recomend Become the street-smart, frontline AUTOBOT warrior! Use your wits and power to battle the DECEPTICONS and protect Earth from their evil. When you¿ve got the power of BUMBLEBEE, nothing can stand in your way! Suit up just like the BUMBLEBEE character and prepare to save the universe with your amazing voice-mixer helmet! With three different modes and awesome electronic features on this detailed helmet, you¿ll look like the TRANSFORMERS Movie hero, and you¿ll even sound like him, too! Switch on voice mixer mode to have your voice remixed with six different music styles. The helmet also plays realistic conversion sounds of the BUMBLEBEE character changing from a car to a robot and back again, or his movie battle phrases including, ¿BUMBLEBEE to the rescue! ¿Your Mission¿Protect the world from evil¿ and several more! (Daughter Loves Her VSmile Motion)
(The Good Game Console)
(Great gaming system for kids!)
(a must for any 5 year old) Since the wii and its games cost more, this is good for an educational alternative for kids. Plus the wii games are so horrible and good for only about a week before they're so boring you try to exchange them for 4 dollars at gamestop and lose out on 39 bucks. The games for this thing are way cheaper, and educational. First, I must say, I was very apprehensive about buying this console after reading reviews from other sites. I got one at a great bargain price and I couldn't pass it up. I kept my fingers crossed hoping I wouldn't be one of the unfortunates. Thankfully, I wasn't. We've had it for about 2 months now and she's just getting the hang of it (she's 3). She does get a little frustrated when the car goes the wrong way (most kids are at that age anyway). I only have the game it came with and she loves the racing part. It amazes me to hear her calling out the letters that she needs to find to complete the word. I'll be getting her more games in the future. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and most important, my daughter loves it. Great console and educational content. Great educational learning tool that is also FUN!! My 3 and 4 year olds love it. Having a game console like this makes learning letters, numbers, and words a lot more fun than the flashcards and books. OK, so not the best graphics but it is not as expensive as the other systems out there and is great for kids. She does get a little frustrated from time to time and I even got stuck on one of the Spiderman games! LOL! She gets a little bored with some but there are so many options on each cartridge. This is a cute system, I would recommend it. Not a bad price either, I did get it as a gold box deal and that was great! I have a very active 5 year old, who's motor skills need extra work. This game allows her to use her hand eye cordination and wiggle. She loves to play the games. The first system I recieved would not turn on, but a replacement was sent and arrived faster than I anticipated and works wonderfully. This game is a great way to give the early learner the activity and education they need!!!!!! Don¿t just park your child in front of the TV, put them in motion while driving home lessons in math, reading, science, spelling and more with the V.smile V-motion TV learning system. V.Smile V-Motion is a brilliant breakthrough gaming console that combines wireless, motion-activated play, web connectivity and educational gaming into a system that plugs directly into your television. Get into the game with all your child's favorite characters including Scooby-doo, Thomas the tank engine, and spider-man, as well as new ones like kung fu panda, wall.e, and wonder pets. Your child will love the wireless action packed play with all their friends that guide them through age-appropriate skill levels and developmental activities. Keep kids moving, learning, and having fun with the award-winning V.Motion Active Learning System from Vtech. This educational gaming system is designed to keep kids aged three to seven amused and motivated for hours at a time. They will have plenty of fun using the wireless controller to practice hand eye coordination, solve puzzles, and win races. | What We Think Fun Factor:
Durability:
(what this means)
The Good:Educational gaming system encourages creativity and problem solving
The Bad:No option to use non-battery power with the console
In a Nutshell:This unique game system promotes active play and makes learning fun | At a GlanceAges:3 to 7 Requires:4 AA batteries and 3 AAA batteries (included); TV; PC to use V-link features

Includes everything you need to get started with healthy, educational fun. | Included "Action Mania" Smartridge features six types of games . View larger. | Easy to Setup and Control Getting ready for your child's first game is easy. Simply insert the included AA batteries into the game console and the included AAA batteries into the controller. Then connect the console to your TV using the include A/V cable, slide a Smartridge cartridge into the game slot, and you're ready to go.For each game, there are two control options. Kids can pick to use the joystick as a directional controller, or they can pick to use the motion of the controller itself. This means that tipping the controller left, right, forward, or backward inspires a corresponding motion on screen, letting kids get up and move around instead of staying stationary in front of the TV. This is extra fun when your on-screen character is doing something fast-paced, like racing down a bobsled course. On the flip side, games that require more nuanced controls are often easier to navigate using the joystick. There's even a switch that lets you decide which way is "up," so the controller can be customized to accommodate right and left handed players. Lots of Ways to Play Educational Games It's easy to see why this system won the National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval and the Creative Child Seal of Excellence. A variety of age-appropriate games teach concepts like numbers, letters, and shapes for younger children and let older children work on skills like counting, vocabulary, and matching. These games feature popular characters like Dora the Explorer, Spiderman, Kung Fu Panda, and Scooby Doo, and they include features that range from races to puzzles to sing-alongs. When kids want to play with a friend or a sibling, there's a two-player mode. And a switch on the bottom of the controller lets you ensure that signals aren't being crossed if the second player comes with his or her own controller. The included "Action Mania" Smartridge means that your child will have six distinct types of games to choose from right away. One option is to engage in a bobsled race where passing through gates requires answering questions related to counting or more advanced topics like understanding greater than and less than. Another option involves using the controller to balance on a ball and select healthy foods, like pineapple, and avoid "unhealthy" snacks, like sweets. The third game is situated on a tennis court and does an especially good job promoting the development of hand eye coordination. Club VTech lets parents and kids connect online and participate in a family-centered learning community. The included USB V-link device makes it easy to move data from your home computer to your Active Learning System. Web connect features allow for bonus gameplay downloads that keep kids excited about this learning system, and parents have access to educational advice and special promotional offers. Overall, the whole Vtech experience is designed to promote interaction and healthy lifestyle choices while making learning fun. Our one minor complaint is the fact that the console uses battery power instead of having a wall adapter, which would eliminate the disappointment of batteries dying in the middle of a game. But if you don't have a convenient outlet, or you want to use the same console on several different TVs, this feature can actually be a bonus. What's in the Box Console, controller, wrist strap, 4 AA batteries, 3 AAA batteries, Smartridge, V-link, and user's manual.

(Good stuff!!)
(lifesaver)
(Good light for the price)
(Light good, attachment pieces terrible) I think this light is well worth the money. I occasionally ride when it's dark and this "Blinky" add the measure of safety I wanted. This is a great product for the money. The mount was a cinch to install on the seat post of my bike and took only about 10 minutes. It comes without instructions, and I was a little puzzled at first as to how to install the batteries. That was a minor hurdle and certainly no reason to rate the light down at all. It was a simple matter of pulling the red lens cover away from the black part. It takes a little effort, and I was afraid of breaking it. However, it proved to be up to the task so don't be too worried about that--you should be able to do it with just your hands easily enough. I can't speak to the battery life at this point, but the light is BRIGHT! When I held it at arms length I was seeing spots afterwards. A driver would have to be asleep at the wheel not to notice me. Does what it's supposed to do, and does it well. 3 LEDs, plenty bright. Battery life is good. Comes with seat post and seat stay attachments, the stay one is pretty useful for attaching the light in odd places (such as my milk crate).
A typically well thought-out and quality Planet Bike product.
PS: This is the same light that comes with the combined Beamer 1 and Blinky 3 set, but the set doesn't come with the seat stay mount. Not much to say, this is a great light for the price. 3 functions work well and it is easy to install.
Plus, it's from Madison, WI (great biking city) so you know it's good! Five stars for the actual light, one star for the attachment pieces. If you don't have a seat bag, it should attach fine to your seat post. If you have a seat bag, then it has to clip to the back of your seat bag or on the seat stays. Neither of the two attachment pieces they sent fit on the seat stays on our Specialized bikes (which are not rounded). One of the piece is too large for the stays, the other is too small. So, we put the lights on our seat bag tags, but it just clips on and does not have a snap... and so one of ours fell off one of the bags when we were biking recently and hit a small bump. Thankfully we heard it fall and retrieved it; now I'm trying to cover the clip with duct tape. The manufacturer needs to have a clip bottom that actually snaps to the frame so there's no possibility of the unit falling off. They also need to provide some type of adjustable attachment device that will ensure that the light can be attached to any seat stay. Planet Bike BRT-3 Taillights includes batteries, seatpost and seatstay mounts. The Planet Bike Blinky "3" 3-Led Rear Bicycle Light provides 300 percent brighter eXtreme LEDs to ensure that you will be seen by cars coming up from behind for as far as one mile away. Users rave about the exceptional brightness of this powerful little light as well as its long battery life. The light features steady or blinking modes, and will run on two AAA batteries for up to 200 hours.Super convenient and easy to use, the light has two mounting options--a clip for the seat post or a clip for a rear-side strut. The clip can also be attached to a bag or clothing so you can use it for night walking as well as riding. Easy to detach from the seat post mount, the light is small enough to fit into a pocket or small bag if you need to take it with you. Altogether, the Blinky is an economical choice that offers long-lasting visibility for night riding and lots of convenience. What's in the Box? Planet Bike Blinky Bicycle light, seatpost mount, seatstay mount, two AAA batteries About Planet Bike In November 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, WI. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment. Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact. Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high-quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, the company strives to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short 10-year history, it has made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the four-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that 10 years ago started as a one-man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve its product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

(NICE RIDE!!)
(Purchaser) This was a gift for my grandsons. I am told they really like it and ride it all the time. It was easy to put together and use. We bought this for our 11 year old son. Overall we think it is pretty nice. We have had no problems with it at all. We actually purchased a Razor E100 First for our 8 year old daughter and it was a piece of garbage- Then we bought the E200 and thought it was great, so we thought the E300 would be even better. It's a great scooter but we were a little disappointed that you can't adjust the handlebars on this one like the E200 to go up and down. Other than that it performs very well. I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY SONS BIRTHDAY AND WAS SUPRISED HOW NICE THIS SCOOTER IS! HE LOVES IT! HE DID TAKE A SPILL,&LUCKILY ONLY SCRAPED HIS LEG, SO MOM AND DADS...... ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS USE A HELMET!! ALWAYS. TELL YOUR KID-- IT SHOWS THAT YOU ARE SMARTER THAN THE OTHER KIDS WHO DONT.(IF THEY SAY "MY FRIENDS DONT WEAR ONE!") IT LASTS QUITE A WHILE BEFORE HAVING TO RECHARGE IT TOO! I SAVED SOME MONEY TOO. MC SPORTS WANTED $250.00 I'D SAY I GOT A DEAL! THANKS AMAZON, YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO SAVE ME $$ The scooter is great. PlasmaCar(2007-06-02)

(A 3 year old loves his Plasma Car.)
(Good gift idea)
(Not what we expected)
(Pure Chinese Junk) What a pain to have this awesome car but only to be able to use it for a few rides before the steering handle comes unscrewed rendering the car useless. This is a design flaw that needs to be addressed. No matter the size of child riding the PlasmaCar, it continues to come unscrewed, therefore, leaving the car undriveable since it's the steering mechanism that actually makes it go. Our 3 year old friend is wild about his new Plama Car. He "zooms" around the house on it and also uses it outside. We think it was the best toy he got for his birthday. I bought this for my grandson in Wisconsin. I live in Oregon. The report is that it is a lot of fun..That's good enough for me.. I bought this for my 3 year old and am very dissapointed. It does not ride as advertised. He ends up pushing himself with his feet instead. The plastic wheels wear out quickly!!! I returned this today to Amazon. The manual indicates that Plasmacar is not recommended for use on hardwood and laminated floors (it leaves scratch marks) and it is dog slow on carpet, concrete and asphalt surfaces. It begs the question what surface it is designed for then? Mars, perhaps.
Typical low quality Chinese manufacturing. Once assembled, wheels cannot be removed so I had to curse its Canadian maker/designer even when packing it for return as it could not fit in the box it came in.
Do your child a favour and buy her a book instead. For a child, nothing is worse than a disappointing toy and Chinese-made toys are reliably so. It's like magic, but you don't need to be a magician to get it to work. The PlasmaCar is a mechanical marvel that makes use of that most inexhaustible of energy sources, kid-power, by harnessing the natural forces of inertia, centrifugal force, gravity, and friction. It's so easy to operate; all it needs is a driver and a smooth, flat surface. The PlasmaCar is adult-friendly, too. For starters, it doesn't require an expensive power source that needs constant replacement. No batteries, no power-cells, no liquid fuel-just the occasional cookie or two. It's quiet too-the only sound you'll hear is the sound of its wheels. It provides kids with plenty of exercise, more so than most toys. And the PlasmaCar is engineered to be absolutely safe when used appropriately. It's been extensively tested, and meets or exceeds all significant international safety standards.¿ Fully Assembled: 31" x¿ 14" x 16"¿¿¿¿ 8.15 lbs Rerations < Blue PlasmaCar >

(Nephew liked it for a minute)
(great game, good EFL support)
(My son is happy and learning)
(Leapster Game: First Grade) My daughter got a leapster and games for her birthday when she was 5 - one her favorites was the basic "Kindergarden" game, but it was becoming too easy for her a year later. I decided to try the 1st Grade game and she loves it - it is still challenging to her without being too frustrating. I'd much prefer she play with this than watch TV! It held his interest for a little while. When I quizzed him, he seemed to be picking up some of the basic that the game was trying to teach. We bought this game for our 5 year old daughter as a support to learn english as a foreign language, and she loves it. The level in maths seems to be lower than 1st grade, but we expect this game to last through most of primary school. I recommend it for EFL/ESL. I wanted to buy a game that would make my 5 year old happy and, at the same time, improve his skills in Math and language. This game achieved achieved both ends. I strongly recommend it for kids in Kindergarten, because it stimulates them. I don't know whether it would work as well for 1st graders. My son loves this Leapster Game. I like the fact that he is actually learning something. He is in kindergarten and I got this game for him to present a bit of a challenge for him. He has not completed all the levels yet, but he likes the fact that he can figure things out on his own. I am not sure if it is a full-fledged first grade level game, but it will present a challenge for 4 - 6 year olds. Join Leap, Lily and Tad at the Beach Boardwalk and play 6 action-packed learning games that teach 70 reading and math skills! Play learning games to earn tokens to race cars at the grand opening of the RC Racetrack! Leapster2 players can connect online for extra activities and rewards. (Plasma Car -- Tons of Fun!!)
(Fun car)
(Problems with Amazon)
(Great fun) I bought this for my son's 3rd birthday. He LOVES it! He rides it non-stop. We have a lot of tile in our house so he rides it all day long. I think he spends more time riding this than walking these days. He even pushes it with his feet on the carpeted areas. I highly recommend this toy if you have children between the ages of three and ten. My six year old likes it so much that I'm going to have to go buy another one for her because they fight over it. They can even ride it together so I try to encourage that to avoid them fighting over it. Overall I can't say my base boards and ankles love this toy but it is completely worth it since they have so much fun on it! Unique ride-on toy that promotes coordination in a fun way for kids!! Very durable. My kids got these when they turned four. They love zooming around, I love the upper body exercise they're getting. I ordered a blue plasma car for my grandson for Valentine's Day. The blue car arrived in a timely manner, but then three days later I received a red plasma car which I did not order. I returned the red plasma car and to this date have not received a credit. The blue car I ordered was [...] but I was charged [...] I have ordred on line dozens of times and have never had a problem. Needles to say, I will never order from Amazon again and still await credit on my Visa card and today is March 10, 2009. Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. The car is his favorite toy, I wish I could say the same about Amazon.
Linda Clayton 2042 S Waterway Drive North Palm Beach, FL 33408 This was purchased by grandparents for a 4 yr old with a 6 yr old brother. They can ride indoors up and down the hallway on many a rainy afternoon in Oregon. It's easy to accomplish the steering of this toy and both boys enjoy it! We'll see how it works on the sidewalk this summer. It's been extensively tested, and meets or exceeds all significant international safety standards.¿ Fully Assembled: 31" x¿ 14" x 16"¿¿¿¿ 8.15 lbs Rerations < Red PlasmaCar >

(My Son Loves These)
(Dive Balls)
(VERY PLEASED!)
(best diving toy) More like golf balls with some colored bands. They have some soft plastic on the bottom that will protect kids heads if hit, but won't expect them to last more than 2 seasons. These are great pool fun&would rate even higher if they had not been made in China. My granddaughter learned to swim this year and has truly gotten many hours of fun out of these dive balls. I'm glad I purchased them. PRETTY FUN FOR KIDS AND EVEN ADULTS. VERY DURABLE. BUT FOR KIDS, IT ONLY LAST SO LONG, BUT THAT'S HOW IT IS WITH MOST OF THE EXPENSIVE TOYS WE BUY FOR THEM THESE DAYS HUH? these are absolutely the best diving toys out there. They sink right away, are safe, easy to see and a lot of fun. Younger kids love them and will get under the water to pick them up. I have used them with all age groups and they were always a big hit. The Wild Planet Dive Balls colorful fabric tails flutter to the bottom of the pool and are easy to see and grab. Challenge a friend to a race to see how many you can collect. Or, see how many you retrieve with just one breath. Comes in a 3-pack of assorted colors. Rerations < Wild Planet Dive Balls >

(Good game - but has a bug...)
(great game) My 6 yr old loves this game and is learning math with it. I have always been bad at math so I buy whatever I see that can help her so that she does not have my problem. Well, it is working she loves math and loves to play with her leapster. She says that is her T.V, when she is not allow to watch the real thing and she is not afraid of math. She was the first one in her kindergarten class to master adding and substrating. It is all because of the leapster.woohoo! My daughter has loved playing this game. She was having problems remembering simple math this gave her the review she needed in a fun way. Her math grades have improved and I am happy. My grandson loves this. He even said that it was fun and it is teaching him alot even if he thinks it is just a game. I would recommend this to kids that need help with math and want to have fun at the same time. Bottom line - we had to return this cartridge after a few days because it has a bug - at least in our cartridge and when played on our Leapster 2, the tangram (window allignment) game gets stuck and says not everything is covered (it happens in all three levels) - and from then on you can't play it, because it returns to that same stage. But other than that it's a good game, and we returned it with the hope of repurchasing it when Leapfrog fix the bug...
The game has 4 assignments and 3 arcade games you can play with the money you earned on the assignments. In other reviews and in the leapfrog site I didn't see a mention of what the arcade games are, so here goes: 1) snake (25 cents) 2) flying a spaceship to rescue soldiers - you have limited fuel (which is used to boost you up - and then you can move to the sides as well) and you need to avoid crashing into the rocks - 50 cents. 3) castle something - in each level you are in a room with ladders and you have a limited time in which to get the key and open the door to exit the room, while collecting as many coins as you can to raise your score (there's a bonus for collecting all coins). As you progress you need to collect boots that help you jump higher, avoid guards, ride a flying step, etc (we had to return the game before I found out what the etc. is...)
I am an adult, so I have played snake too much in the past to enjoy it, but I recall that I used to enjoy it when it was the only thing to play on the cellphone. The other two are fun, but I can't tell you how many levels they have, since, as I mentioned, we returned the game.
As for the assignments: (1) The window tangram game that gets stuck (2) A fish weighing game (e.g. put the right combination of fish so their weights add up to 3 x 4) (3) A candy box game where you need to find the right combination of candies the customer is interested in (mastermind/bulls and cows - in the first level the location of the candy doesn't matter) (4) The sale tagging game in which you need to tag with a sales tag items that describe the chosen number (e.g. 5 ->five, 2+3, 6-1, odd,...) - the items are on a moving conveyor belt so you need to decide fast.
All the games are pretty good - only the fish weighing game is a little too boring - it's probably the one that teaches the most math, but it lacks the fun aspect, like the speed factor of the tagging game (the other two are real games) - it's a little too close to being a regular math question. All in all - if it wasn't for the bug - we'd keep the game, and I'd play it (my daughter is not 4 yet - and can basically only play the tangram assignment independently - but she didn't mind playing the others and just asked for help).
my 5 year old son loves this game. he picked every other game for himself (and never looked interested in this one) before i finally got him this as a gift. now he adores it and it continues to be challenging for him, as the levels get harder as his skills get better. wonderful! Save the stores of Spectacle City and develop real-world math skills as you complete orders at a candy store, build a skyscraper and more! Earn reward¿money¿ by solving math problems, then spend your hard-earned cash on exciting arcade games. Leapster2 players can connect online for extra activities and rewards. And with the LeapFrog® Learning Path, parents can see what their child is learning. Appropriate for ages 4 years to 8 years. All Leapster games work with all Leapster systems. customer 's review (Lego Mindstorms teaches you about robotics)
(Lego Mindstorms NXT is fun training for future scientists)
(Great way to get kids (and adults) into object based programming and automation)
(NXT - Taking it to the NeXT Level)
(Lego Mindstorms NXT, un excelente paquete de robótica) Lego Mindstorms is a fine toy for the young and old. However this is not the typical Lego set every one is used to. It is far more than that and getting started takes a lot of reading, experimenting, and perseverance. This is not a toy that you can just take out of the box and start playing with. However this toy does have a huge fan base world wide and there is a lot of on line support for this toy for it is highly regarded. The programming language which consists of symbolic command blocks is very difficult to learn from the built in help menus that comes with the software, instead buy the book Lego Mindstorms NXT-G Programming Guide by James Floyd Kelly. This book breaks down the instructions into finely detailed descriptions that allow you to fully understand the capabilities of each one. I coached a group of Junior High School students at the Arthur S. Somers School in Brooklyn New York for the 2008 Lego League Climate Connections Challenge and we did quite well, and had a lot of fun too. This toy allows individuals to build and cultivate mechanical engineering concepts and computer programming skills in a fun way that allows one to create robots or machines of their own design. I highly recommend it. LEGO Mindstorms NXT Fortunately we have a friend who lives in the USA and came to Brazil and so, could bring it to us here where the retail prices are prohibitive, around R$ 1,999 Brazilian Reais that make today over US$ 1,000 ... It is a high tech toy which is available is some very few good schools where there are few robots to be used by large groups of students. As my son aged 12 showed interest we got him one Lego Mindstorms NXT for his personal use, and some of his friends come to play with him. It is fun for him and friends, it is a toy that helps him and friends to develop technical skills, habilities, competencies. Hope that they be able to develop lower cost robots like that here in Brazil, to proportionate this opportunity to more children, and so, get a better standard of living for all. It is a marvelous, intelligent toy. Strongly recommend it to all. As a mechanical engineer who uses labview daily, I was excited to upgrade to the nxt. I have some projects in mind and this is a great value for intial concept work. I also want to use this for hobbyist projects as well and am encouraged by the aftermarket support. The Lego NXT is more than just a toy. The NXT is an excellent tool to learn about computer programming languages such as C, Java, and even Lisp. The experiential hands-on education of robotics (designing, building, and programming robots) also provides an excellent tool for learning general Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topics, pre-CS1 for computer science majors and students considering a CS major, teaching computer science, teaching artificial intelligence (AI) concepts, and K-12 outreach and enrichment. In this regard, the value of robotics lies in its concrete character, and its service as a bridge between operational and abstract levels of thinking. Hi there, I wrote this review for people who speaks spanish.

The next generation of robots! Create the smartest, strongest and most advanced LEGO robot ever, in as few as 30 minutes! The new NXT Intelligent Brick, your robot's "brain," features a powerful 32-bit microprocessor and more memory, plus support for USB 2.0, Bluetooth and more! A highly versatile palette of LEGO Technic elements combines with state-of-the-art ultrasonic, sound, light and touch sensors in the next generation of intuitive robotics. With included Quick-Start guide, easy-to-use software and step-by-step building instructions, beginners and experts alike can create humanoid, vehicle and animal robots that obey every command! Improved light sensors can detect different colors and intensities, while the new sound sensor enables robots to respond to sound patterns and tones. Robots can really "feel" with improved touch sensors, while ultrasonic "eyes" measure distance and movement. Programming software is now available for both PC and Macintosh, plus with Bluetooth support, you can even command your robot from your mobile phone! Sure, Mindstorms NXT is a toy, but it is animportanttoy, like a piano or a chemistry set. It's one of those items that engages an imagination and possibly opens doors to new interests. Since our future is surely to be shared with robots--it's already started happening, just look at Roomba--those robots will need, at least initially, humans to program and maintain them. Those people, years from now, will likely remember their experiences with Lego Mindstorms.Out of the Box The main part of the kit is the NXT itself. It's about the size of an iPod (though a bit thicker) with a a loudspeaker, a monochrome LCD, and navigation keys on the front. This is the controller for the robot--it's brain, if you will. It has three ports on top for connecting to the servo motors and four ports on the bottom for connecting to four different sensors: Touch, Light, Sound, and Ultrasonic (see detail below). | - The NXT: the computer-controlled brain of the Mindstorms robot
- Touch Sensor: enables the robot to feel and react to its environment
- Sound Sensor: enables the robot to react to sound
- Light Sensor: can detect light and color
- Ultrasonic Sensor: allows the robot to measure distance and react to movement
- Servo Motors: ensures the robot moves with precision
|
The set includes Ethernet-like wires for connecting all of these to the NXT, as well as software and a basic USB cable for downloading programs from your computer. Then there are all the Lego parts, hundreds of them, and most are very small. It would be a good idea to get a plastic organizer for the different parts--it would not only make construction and storage easier but also part loss less likely. Hitting the Bricks The instructions for MNXT are simple, illustrated, and they gently take the new user on an introductory path through the system. The quick start guide promises a 30-minute robot building and programing intro, though for me it was closer to 50 (I'm a little old and slow). It starts with a simple diagnostic routine which shows you how to test the function of all sensors, then proceeds to step-by-step picture instructions for building a basic first robot. It's about as complex as building a piece of Ikea furniture. Programming is the real gem in this system. It has a drag-and-drop interface using pre-programmed objects that you pull from a palette and snap to other objects.
|
Next, I installed the software. Be sure to check the system requirements (below). The software is well-designed and very intuitive. It comes with built-in video instructions on how to create your first simple program and download it to your NXT. Bringing It To Life Programming is the real gem in this system. It has a drag-and-drop interface using pre-programmed objects that you pull from a palette and snap to other objects. Each object is configurable. For example, the Sound object brings up a sub-window that allows you to choose between a tone and a list of sound files, set the volume, set duration, and so on. Little Lego bricks between the objects reinforce the idea that building a NXT program is like building a Lego model. Programming this way is much easier than, say, creating a web page from scratch. Lego even offers a software development kit for getting deeper into the programming. | | Mindstorms NXT "challenges" from top: Tribot, RoboArm, and Spike. |
There comes a genuine thrill from seeing something you've created--even something simple and silly as my first program--come to life in a robot. It's akin to seeing yourself on TV for the first time. I played that program a dozen times. The software contains "challenges," which are similar step-by-step instructions for creating and programming more complex models, such as a robotic arm that can "perform simple tasks and react to different colors." Each challenge is divided into smaller tasks with step-by-step building, programming, and testing guides for each task. Accessing your latest program once it's downloaded to the NXT is pretty easy. Lego has set it up so that you can execute it by pressing the big orange center button four times in a row after start-up. I was surprised to find out that you don't need a computer to program the NXT. You can program directly into the NXT Program submenu. Bluetooth Ready The NXT also has built-in Bluetooth wireless technology. If your computer has Bluetooth, you can test and download programs to the NXT without connecting the USB cable--a really handy feature if you're programming a complicated dance routine and you don't want your robot getting tripped up in cables. If your phone or PDA has Bluetooth, you might be able to use your device to control the robot. Best of all, Bluetooth allows you to create a network of up to three NXT devices. Think of the possibilities: three NXTs plus three sets of blocks and sensors equals bigger, more complex robots. My one and only complaint is that I wish the sensors had more "studs," those little round parts that allows Lego bricks to interlock.--Porter B. Hall Rerations < LEGO Mindstorms NXT >
