『I love leapsters. I purchased my kids their leapsters, (3 of them) last Christmas. (11 months ago) They have been a wonderful investment. This game was a lot of fun for my dino loving son. I he got it he kept getting in trouble for sneeking off to play his game when he should be doing chores. So I love the fact that I got him something educational and fun.』

『This is a wonderful game for your budding paleontologist. You learn about different dinosuars eating habbits, match up pieces of a skeleton or a portion of a picture with a picture of the full scale dinosaur, run through mazes, and protect your nest from predators. Once you read 100 points from the aforementioned games you get to dig for fossils. When a skeleton is complete the game plays a video that give you the facts about the dinosaur and an animation of what things may have been like. My 5 yr old son played this game for 2 hours non-stop when we were stuck in a traffic jam and still loves to play it. His 19 month old sister always watches over his shoulder as he play and she can now tell you words like omnivore and herbavor and properly acts out with her toys what the words mean. I think this was a wonderful investment.』

『I bought this for my son for his 4th birthday. He loved it!! It is a great set with LOTS of different dinosaurs. I bought blank folded note cards and we made thank you cards with these stamps.』

(Long-lasting fun)
『These stamps suit various different ages&have suprising longevity : When your child is small (3+) they just enjoy stamping them randomly (make sure you put newspaper down!). But as they grow up they are more careful&eventually can go on to make cards for birthdays etc or decorate bedrooms (under supervision)etc. Not a toy they're going to play with everyday but once in a while on a rainy afternoon. Also very easy to hand down to siblings.』

『My son got this stamp set for his 5th birthday. He's getting into coloring and loves dinosaurs. He really enjoys it, as does his little sister (2) and any friends who have come over to play. It's great quality and they spend a lot of time stamping and then coloring in the stamps with the colored pencils. The only downside is that you have to press down really hard for the pencils to color. We have just replaced the pencils with crayola colored pencils, which are softer, so not a big deal.』

(A TON of fun, especially in larger groups)
『This is an excellent product that is a lot of fun for many ages. Thanks to this unit we have an active club going strong. Forgive the long review, but this unit deserves it in my mind.


Pros
Fun - It is a blast, especially in groups. This really is for adults as well as kids, and if you get a group of people together to do this, you will have a blast. There are many videos of people playing with this and previous generations on Youtube. Search 'Phoenix LTX', 'Tagfest', 'Lazer Tag Team Ops', and you'll probably find a lot.

Range - These taggers (guns) have a range of about 350-400 feet, maybe further (maybe a bit less in bright sun).

Features - These taggers have several features to enhance the playability. a) 10 or 25 tags - you can set a switch to set your 'life' at 10 or 25 tags. This can help balance some scenarios where differences in numbers or age/experience might make things unfair. b) Indoor/outdoor mode - this helps reduce the sensitivity of the receivers - reduces splash damage you get while playing inside. The IR signal can reflect off walls and make it pretty easy to take hits, even around corners and off your clothing. c) Accessory connectors for more options (see below) d) Realistic reload - you drop a fake 'clip' out of the bottom of the grip, much like an ammo clip. e) realistic recoil - there is a hammer that lights up and pops out a little with each shot, and also a vibration with each shot/hit that add to the experience.

Accessories - There is already a shotgun attachment developed, as well as a green dot site. These slide on to connectors on the tagger to give additional capabilities. There are also rumors of more weapon attachments in the pipeline. There was also a video game accessory to let you play 1 player vs. the computer on a TV, but it was pretty useless, and you probably won't see that any more. If you play with the older LTTO style taggers, you can actually join games hosted by the older taggers.

Exercise - Depending on your gameplay style, you can get as much exercise out of it as you want. The range on these guns is hundreds of feet (a bit less in full sunlight), so you can easily get winded running around inside the playable area.

Eductional - I know - it's a shooter game... but it teaches basic strategy, tactics, and teamwork, and even the younger kids are starting to pick up some of these concepts.

Durability/Battery life (cost of ownership) - The taggers (guns) are very rugged - if you compare the cost of the system with a commercial lazer tag rental facility- you will make your money back in a couple of sessions of playing, and these taggers last a long time. We are still using all of the taggers we bought over the year, though some of them are developing glitches. Battery life is also very good - even with rechargeables (which seem to be a little less effective, but much cheaper in the long run), the batteries will last several sessions of playing.

Online Communities - Very active online community (there's several newsgroups including an active one on Yahoo, search for 'Lazer Tag Team Ops'). The user community and the available technical information on the web opens the door for tech-minded to tear them down and 'mod' them to give them additional features. You may have to solder some stuff, clip some wires, or similar, but some of this is pretty cool. Even me, the solder-novice - has gotten into this a little bit with a few minor mods.

Interaction with others - You can play team-based games of 2 teams. The largest game we had was 36 players at once and it was a bit chaotic, but fun.

Cons -


Can't change the brightness of the LEDs - these are EXTREMELY bright while playing at night, and not only can this effect your aiming, but it gives away your position. We find 2 layers of scotch tape colored with black sharpie work well to dim it down a bit.

Joining hosted games is painful - Mostly a complaint about interacting with older taggers - joining LTTO hosted games is clunky at best.

Lack of Attachments - This is not a failing in the unit, but this particular packaging. This set is a re-offering of the original LTX, which came out last year, but this set has been rebranded under the Nerf brand. Unlike last year's model, this set is sold without the green dot sight and 'shot blast' attachment (at a lower price, granted). I believe it's their intention to sell the attachments separately, but they are not on shelves yet. In this economy, that may not happen if the interest in the line doesn't improve. That would be a complete shame, since this is one of the coolest 'toys' I've ever played with.

We went into it knowing there was a lot of frustration regarding the software. Well, that was definitely an understatement. Having never written a review, and knowing the holidays are coming up, I thought I'd add my opinions to the mix and maybe some helpful solutions to parents. My daughter who just turned 5 is enjoying the doll. Easy to dress, seems durable (tad heavy for a doll, but understandable), etc. Now that she can plug it into the computer, also seems to navigate the Dora world just fine. It is in spanish with sub titles that we've figured out so far, so if you have a non-reader, be prepared to help possibly. The problem is the software. We spent hours trying to get the software to load etc. We then spent hours trying to download the software from the site. Then hours the next day talking to the company. Here is what we have found out and thought we would share for other parents. This is definitely a toy that I would strongly suggest getting the software downloaded and installed before your child receives the doll as it can be time consuming depending on their server and the traffic on it. The Dora Links server can busy. The disk that comes with the doll is in essence not really the software. It is a program that tells your computer to download the software from the website which is the constant 'content downloading' message you read about. If their server is busy, you may then spend two hours downloading (this is with a cable connection) just to have it drop on you all a sudden. It then does not pick back up from where it left off. The suggestion they finally gave us was to google for a free download manager software. This will allow it to continue to push at their server to download the software and then if it does drop, pick back up where it started. I would not use the disk at all as I've seen others have had issues with it. The 'download' on the website is the software you need and the most updated. Once we did this, it installed perfectly and worked great immediately. Great toy, very frustrating to setup. If you're reading this, I'd strongly suggest you follow the above way for installing the software.』 (Website mystery) 『This toy is alright I guess. I would say its pretty expensive for what U get out of it. The website doesn't give U enough options to keep ur kid interested very long. First of all its hard to figure out how to advance in the little city where Dora lives in. They have locks on doors that advance U along,but it never explains how to get the key only that U need to get the key. I spent a half hour trying to figure it out&never did. Now the toy my daughter absolutely had to get is in the closet&hasn't been played w/but three times.』 (Be Prepared) 『The issues I have with this toy involve getting it set-up to play with. My husband was the one who wrestled with the packaging to get all of the pieces unattached from the cardboard backing, but having opened many Barbies myself I know how difficult this display oriented packaging is to work with. Given the problems that many people seem to have had with the software, it makes sense to me to make sure you can download and install the software before you commit to purchasing the doll. If you go to the Dora Links website, on the bottom right you can click on download to start the excruciatingly long process. Once you have it downloaded, go ahead and install the program. This process is even longer than the download so don't expect to be able to see the bar actually moving on the status screen. Next you can go through the username and password set-up. When you get to the screen with a silouette of the unplugged doll at the bottom (between other button options), you are ready to plug her in. Once we got to this point everything has gone swimmingly well. My daughter loves the toy and, I have to admit it is pretty cool!』 (Don't waste your money or disappoint your child) 『I just finished consoling a very disappointed little girl. I gave this doll as a birthday present to my daughter. I should have gone with my first impression. The doll appeared cheap and after taking 20 minutes to take her out of the packaging, I fully realized how cheap it actualy is. I tried installing it on 2 computers. Now I've installed many programs before but this took too long, resulted in a few errors and ultimately would not run properly. I will try to return this doll without the packaging. Mom and dad need to set things up ahead of time or its tears!) 『I'm also a professional software engineer, and wearing that hat, I'm disappointed with the installation experience. I successfully installed everything on my daughter's modest vista machine. The only word I can use to describe the experience is SLOW! The installation, and mysterious updates and `unpacking' steps took forever. I'd say you're looking at minimum and hour to get things going. More installation guidance, perhaps a README file on the CD-ROM would have been very welcome. I certainly think children's software should be held to a higher standard of quality. As a parent, if we had tried to get things up and going with my daughter waiting excitedly it would have been a catastrophe! Luckily that was averted by getting everything setup the night before. One issue we had was at the end of the initial tutorial there were no other mysteries to solve. This took a little while to figure out, and basically was getting out of the game entirely, restarting it, enduring another `update' and `unpack', and then 5 new mysteries were available. The doll and the game work as advertised. There is definitely is a strong hook to encourage mom and dad to purchase other dolls and accessories as they unlock other parts of the Dora Links play world. It is a little disappointing when my daughter can't enter an error or play a game because it's locked. I'm not sure I'm a fan of this sales tactic using my daughter as the lever. All that said, my daughter really loves this doll! And my wife and I are really glad we got it for her. She is very attached to it and can't wait to plug Dora in to her computer and change her appearance etc. The mysteries are right at the edge of her game play abilities, and we have to help her a little occasionally. If mom and dad set up everything first, and try it out first before they let the kids loose on it I think it can be a great gift for all involved.』 『Plug the Dora Links doll into the computer via USB, and girls will have access to her online world. Fun Lights, Sounds, and Vibrations
To start the game, simply push the side power/game type switch. Be sure to agree on a strength level with all players before starting, because it cannot be changed once the game begins! The two guns are equipped and ready for battle with a rumble pack vibration that lets you know when you've been hit, a recoil feature that is activated with every fired shot, and a force-field style shield that will protect you from any incoming fire! The shield gives you that extra couple needed moments to aim with precision, and help you hit your target with accuracy.

As a side note: We recommend always holding your gun with both hands since they are heavy and could break if dropped repeatedly.

Fun For All Ages
The taggers are colorful and outfitted with so many neat sounds, lights, and vibrations, even the adults will be trying to join in on the intense laser battling fun. The shield is such a great addition to the PHOENIX LTX's as well, giving players an extra chance to load up and aim, or get away during a heavy pursuit.
