I presented this to my nephew during this summer and he spent a whole month with it. I would call this very durable with the hard outer shell and it is very likely that most kids would not break this for about 6 months.
We had a lot of fun playing with this toy all over the place and also in the bath and this toy is really DURABLE and is a lot of fun to play with.
At the end of the month, we tried it in the beach and obviously the big toy broke.
The battery life is quite average, since this toy is very BIG and is not suited for small kids.

He instantly fell in love with this truck. Another toy he got that day was an Elmo Live and he literally ran over it with this truck. He got the ball popper wihich he paid no attention to. He got a lawn mower that makes popping noises and he paid no attention to it either. If you can see in the picture of the truck the big red handle above the shovel...he stands and holds this handle and walks with the truck pushing it backwards. I guess he loves it so much because he is learning to walk and this gives him the mobility he wants. He gave my wife out following him around. Great toy! Don't pass it up because of the mindless bad reviews. I am only speaking for boys around the time they are learning to walk.』

People know he loves trains and they tend to buy train stuff for him as gifts. We have some Thomas stuff, as well as stuff from some other brands. We have wooden tracks that happen to be from IKEA but are the same form factor as the Thomas and Brio wooden tracks.
My advice: be wary of any Thomas stuff that says "take along." Henry happens to be my son's only "take along" train/engine and he DOESN'T FIT THE WOODEN TRACKS. My son gets very frustrated when he wants to put a train together and he can't use Henry because he doesn't fit. I am completely baffled by why the Thomas people would make two types of such similarly sized trains. But since they did (these are metal mini-collectibles while the wooden ones are, well, wooden), it seems to me it should CLEARLY state on the packaging that these won't work on the wooden tracks.』

It is pretty durable and he is happy with it. I don't have much trouble but no, you aren't going to make a complete track with no loose ends. Just use your creativity. that's what this toy is supposed to do- give kids the opportunity to be creative in developing their own tracks.I think it's great and I will probably buy my son the switch and change track pack too. He prefers this set to his wooden set and the trackmaster set is just too advanced for him... just an FYI...』
