It is well made and has a lot of details, such as a Caterpillar diesel motor in the engine compartment with a hood that hinges up for access. The design and quality of construction are very good. This is compatible with LEGO Duplo bricks. The front end bucket can be used to load a dump truck with pretend brick-rocks or actual small pebbles. Know what you're buying: this is not suitable for use outdoors in actual dirt, because the fine details that make this interesting will get messed up in the dirt. It is at home indoors with LEGO Duplo bricks and other medium sized toy vehicles and construction equipment.
The tires are very nice with interesting details such as actual metric sizes moulded into the sidewall. (Really!) The vehicle rolls well - straight and smooth - across a flat floor. This is the most realistic and functional backhoe loader I've seen for toddlers.』
(Great building toys) 『We got my 3 year old son a lot of these Cat truck sets for christmas last year and he is still playing with them. They are building sets, which come apart, not regular trucks like another reviewer mentioned. I think that is one of the main plusses of these toys. You wouldn't believe the different combinations of trucks and vehicles my son comes up with by combining pieces from other truck sets. We took some of the tiny pieces and packed them away since we also have a one year old, but most of the pieces are just fine for both kids.』
(Great Addition to a Fantastic Set of Megabloks) 『I started this CAT collection 2 years ago when my boys were close to 2. I started with the Tower crane, grader, another truck that escapes me and the transport station. At 2 they were a bit too difficult to build alone; however by the time they were 2 1/2 to three, they were loving all of these and so were we! They are the BEST construction blocks for kids in my opinion. Far superior to LEGOS and a lot more fun. We have since added the backhoe, dump truck, articulated dump truck, material hauler and excavation site. The boys (who now just turned 4) build the most incredible,creative trucks and sites. As to the reviewer complaining the parts do not stay together, we have not had this problem unless the boys crash their vehicles together or get rough with them. They ARE building sets not traditional trucks and do have to be played with differently. That being said, the boys drive their trucks all over the room without a problem and play interactively with the other pieces of the sets-ramps etc. without mishap. We love this set and wish Megabloks had more add on and accessory kits so you could build more buildings or additional trucks like a cement mixer.』

Although he does play with this toy, only because it's James. I have hardwood floor for my house, and this toy is so sensitive that every time I walk near it the sound goes off. And for some reason if you didn't put it in the right position at night, the sound will go on all night.』

The only down part is the amount of batteries it takes. Both of my sons are 3 and 5 and they have ran the car through the wringer (threw it, hit walls, sent tumbling down the steps, etc.). As with all the newer additions to the Thomas line, Alfie's construction is very sturdy. His movable arm carries magnetic cargo, and my son often pairs Alfie up with Jack for "construction work" on the lines around the Island of Sodor.

While the toy is cute and durable like all of the Thomas Friends, we were both very disappointed to discover the scoop is a solid piece instead of a hollow working scoop.
