(Better and better with repeated viewings)
『The first time I saw this movie, I enjoyed it, but it was nothing terribly special. Then, I happened to be working (as an engineer) on a consumer electronics product that plays DVD, and this was one of the test discs that I used. Consequently, I've seen the movie dozens of times now.

Rather than becoming tedious and repetitive, this movie actually gets better and better each time you watch it! It's clear that enormous loving care went into the script, as there are dozens of instances of foreshadowing and inside jokes built into the scenery and dialog. Minor characters turn out to be more deeply entwined with our heroes' lives than they appear at first. And, there are so many subtle little jokes in the dialog that you won't catch on first viewing.

All in all, this is now one of my favorite movies, and one I watch from time to time just for fun.』

(Blu-Ray Review)
『Blu-Ray is fine. I think the movie itself is totally dumb and not even funny. But oh well.』

(Best version of the movie currently available)
『Shaun of the Dead BD viewed on a 50" 1080p Panasonic plasma via a Panasonic DMP-BD80 through a Yamaha RX-V863 (5.1 speakers) and an HDMI splitter/amp. 7.5' viewing distance.

Having watched this via FioS months ago, I was a little leery about PQ. No need; nice visible details throughout the movie. Not a lot of 3D pop. wasn't watching for halo-ing nor EE - sorry. good to see they made an effort for this HD release.

AQ was outstanding. i very clearly heard Ed 'pranging' Pete's car outside Shaun's parents' home from my rear surround speakers.

great HD upgrade from the DVD - recommended! might add to this review for extras later...』

(Shaun on Bluray!)
『I loved (and still) this movie about a romantic comedy with zombies. I bought this on bluray for the quality of the transfer and audio, and I got a little disapointment. I think you can get the same results on dvd. Some extra features are included. Anyways if you liked this movie so much as I did, you defenetly want this on bluray.』

(Probaby the best zombie romantic comedy out there)
『Been waiting forever for this to come out on Blu-Ray, it's one of my favorite movies of all time and I'm not disappointed. The audio and video are top notch, many of the extras are carried over from the dvd but that's ok since the dvd already had a lot of material, the newly added Zomb-O-Meter is a really cool new feature. If you are a fan of the movie this is a must buy.』
『There comes a day in every man’s life when he has to get off the couch...and kill some zombies. When flesh-eating zombies are on the hunt for a bite to eat, it’s up to slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his best pal Ed (Nick Frost) to save their friends and family from becoming the next entrée. Novelist Stephen King gushes Shaun of the Dead is “a 10 on the fun meter and destined to be a cult classic” and Newsweek calls it “a bloody hoot!” It’s a screamingly hilarious zomedy that will have you dying with laughter.』

(army of darkness best quality)
『this dvd was in immaculate condition. no scratches, dirt or tears..it looked liked i bought it from the store brand new. thank you.』

(A Good Quality Transfer... But Lacking Special Features (HD/DVD Combo))
『Halloween got me in the mood for Army of Darkness, so shortly after I bought this one off Amazon.

I don't own a HD DVD player, so this is a review of the DVD side. In fact, this combo format version was cheaper than the regular DVD version (go figure).

Under "Customer Images" on this page, there are some images that compare the DVD side of this release to the Anchor Bay release (Army of Darkness)

The images supplied are helpful because they address 2 things:

1) The video on the Universal release (HD/DVD Combo) does have more in frame on the left/right sides of the screen, but a little bit is cropped on the top and bottom (in comparison to the Anchor Bay release)

2) As the images show, the colors on the Universal release are a bit brighter. On the Anchor Bay DVD, the colors are much cooler. The comparison pictures are a little exaggerated in my opinion though, I think Universal did a very good job with it. The daylight scenes are crisp and vibrant, and the night shots capture the original "cool" colors very well too.

If you're looking for a good DVD version of AOD, this is one of the best. If you want special features however, this is not the right DVD for you.』

(Great movie)
『I ordered this movie because it is a great comedy... didn't realize that there are 2 movies before this one, but it goes well by itself too. I got my order pretty quickly and it was in great condition!』

(If Evil Dead 1 and 2 were pointless.)
『if Evil Dead 1&2 were pointless blood fests of carnage, then this is pointless and not scary nor funny Period. The 3rd/final Installment (thank god) is the worst of the worst. your a fan of the trilogy perhaps it appeals to you, this is just my opinion with all due respect.』

(Do not Buy this Movie)
『This movie is just plain stupid. Terrible plot and bad acting. This is the big budget take on this series?
It figures. Just avoid it.』

『All primitive screwheads, listen up! Cult superstar Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) reunites with director Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell, Spider-Man) to battle the deadly forces of evil in Army of Darkness - the outrageous, effects-fueled action epic that will make you scream with fear and laughter. Forced to lead a makeshift Dark Ages army against the demonic Deadites, who possess all the deadly magic of hell, the shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed, reluctant 20th century time traveler Ash (Campbell) must save the living from the dead, rescue his medieval girlfriend and get back to his own time. One of the most popular horror comedies of all time, now digitally remastered and loaded with bonus features, Army of Darkness Screwhead Edition is drop-dead fun!』
『A movie that only true horror buffs could love,Army of Darknessis officially part 3 in the wild and wackyEvil Deadtrilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV seriesHercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first twoEvil Deadflicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classicJason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutesArmy of Darknessnearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead.--Jeff Shannon

(Interview with the vampire)
『I love this movie and it was in terrific shape. I am a good fan of Anne rices books.』

(Great movie but iffy picture quality in some spots)
『Interview With the Vampire is a great vampire film. It is based on the Anne Rice novel of the same title. It begins in modern day San Francisco when a reporter interviews a man who claims to be a vampire. Then the vampire begins to tell his story. Overall the film has a great plot I will not venture further into it for those who have not seen it. I would rate the film a 4.5/5 the picture quality 4/5 and audio a 4/5 overall this is a great purchase especially considering how great of a price it is at you can't go wrong.』

(scary , hilarious , thrilling , empty as a joel olsteen seminar)
『revisting this highly campy , homoerotic , wickedly decadent , lusciously lensed film revealed its' status as the funniest film of 1994 . it's a lot of dated fun with many belly laughs in the miraculously theatrical performances of all involved . we all have DAVID GEFFEN to thank for championing this expertly directed (by NEIL JORDAN) film . the hilarious script is only amplified by copious use of subtitles provided (and needed) when it comes to ANTONIO BANDERAS (nice hair wig by the way) . a huge thank you to ANNE RICE for adapting her own book and keeping it NATIONAL LAMPOON worthy . reverence of special features is priceless .』

(Interview with the Vampire)
『The DVD movie arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition.
I have played it and it has no skips or scratches. I am pleased.
Thank you.』

(See this movie)
『A great Vampire story-Great time periods, cast/characters-perfect, visuals-awesome, this is also a movie you can watch more than once or twice. I would say 15 and older. Not gory, just really cool movie.』
『AFTER 200 YEARS OF IMMORTALITY, A MOROSE VAMPIRE NAMED LOUIS DECIDES TO TELL A YOUNG REPORTER HIS STORY, A TALE THAT LEAVES A TRAIL OF BLOOD AND DEATH THROUGH HISTORY FROM THE 18TH CENTURY CREOLE COUNTRY TO MODERN DAY SAN FRANCISCO. SPECIAL FEATURES: SUBTITLES IN ENGLISH, FRENCH AND SPANISH AND MUCH MORE.』
『When it was announced that Tom Cruise would play the vampire Lestat in this adaptation of Anne Rice's bestselling novel, even Rice chimed in with a highly publicized objection. The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made.--Jeff Shannon

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review
(Fair to poor blu-ray, but better than DVD)
『There are a plethora of reviews of the movie, but my review is mostly a comparison of the BD vs DVD version. I won't discuss its merits as movie.

Alas, while there is substantial improvement in the video via BD's high resolution, its a disappointment compared to many other BD releases. Most video images lack sharpness. Since old movies like Battle of Britain, 2001: Space Odyssey or Clockwork Orange, can compete with recent films like Troy, its clear the folks who mastered Predator did a poor job.

Audio does not make full use of imaging although its clearer and more bombastic than the DVD, and since 5.1 Dolby only came in the 1990s, that point can be excused.

However, since Predator is sold as a discount BD disk, if you don't own it on DVD, its well worth it, but if you do, think twice, the improvements are not that stark. However, the BD made if far clearer to me the pilots were still in the chopper after it was downed, the skinned corpses of the Hopper team appear more detailed and ghastly, there is more oomph in the assault on the rebel scene due to the improved sound, you can see the rounds in the mini-gun zip through the gun and its clear how its fed through the backpack ammo case, you can make out the MTV t-shirt throughout most of Jesse Ventura's scenes, you can make out where the commandos were hit by the predator, which was vague on the DVD. So overall, its an improvement, and worth 3 stars.

(Proper Blu-Ray upgrade, please ?)
『The movie itself is great. Won't bother you with all the details, because you're well aware of them, of course. I'm waiting for a proper blu-ray edition, one that takes advantage of the format. This one doesn't. The studio's blu-ray version insults my intelligence. 'Nuff said.』

(This is the real king of the jungle!)
『Even though I slightly prefer the sequel, the original is still creepy and entertaining. Here we are introduced to the "Predator," an alien hunter who has crash-landed in the jungles of Central America. Little is known about this strange species; only that it'll kick your @** if you get in his way. Add in Arnold Schwarzenegger and his team of soldiers and you've got a bitter conflict between human and alien. I got to say that this is one of the few movies in which Arnold gives a very good performance. You get to see him in some well-done action sequences. The supporting cast is good as well: who would have thought that Jesse Ventura could act? The action is solid; the blood and gore aren't very excessive, but they're still tons to see. And of course, the "Predator" is the real star in this film; that, and the special effects (which still looks realistic today).』

(Not exact but okay)
『Ths item was posted as 'Widescreen' version but was not. Arrived quick and in listed good condition but thought I was getting what was shown as something it wasn't.
~CC』

(Arnold is something else)
『Made when Arnold still had a great deal of muscle to spare. This movie, like a lot of science fiction, assumes aliens will be a hostile group. Those races that make it to space would have the intelligence and capacity to engage new races more amicably than depicted. How else would such a race even reach the level of achieving the ability to travel in space unless they had learned to live in peace. Otherwise they would not have lasted long enough to do so.

『The ultimate hunter meets the ultimate adversary... in the ultimate Collector's Edition DVD! Arnold Schwarzenegger wages an all-out war against an unseen enemy, a force more powerful and deadly than any on Earth-because the Predator is not of this Earth. Now, you can explore the depths of the Predator jungle with this all-new 2-disc set packed with over 5 hours of out-of-this-world extras, including an in-depth documentary, director's commentary, never-before-seen bonus footage, revealing featurettes and more!』
RambomeetsAlienin this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year beforeDie Hardmade him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant.--Jeff Shannon

『This movie is the prequel to the the other Underworld films and ties everything into one coherent series. Most of the original actors are back and we learn how Lucian became so powerful. A must see and have for anyone that has seen or is collecting the other two films. Rona Mitra gives a great performance as the Vampire daughter of the high elder who falls for the Lycan Lucian. *****』

(Russ' Lycan Review)
『A good buy, not a great buy. Good story, but you really miss Seline (Kate Beckinsale):( Kate is why most of us started watching the Underworld series, but she leaves us for this one so we can get some history. BOOOOHHHH! A descent movie, will give a B+. Comparible to the 1st, not quite as good, definitely not as good as 2nd (Evolution).』
Underworld: Rise of the Lycansdelves into the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires, known as Death Dealers, and the barbaric Lycans (werewolves). A young Lycan, Lucian (Michael Sheen), emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has persecuted them for hundreds of years. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, the beautiful vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra), in his battle to free the Lycans from their brutal enslavement.』
『This prequel to Len Wiseman’sUnderworldandUnderworld: Evolutionis distinctively different, especially minus the nimble vampire warrior star, Selene (Kate Beckinsale).Underworld: Rise of the Lycanstakes its cues from the vampire/werewolf battles that occur in the other films, but director Patrick Tatopoulos focuses here on the young werewolf Lucian's (Michael Sheen) rise to leadership.Rise of the Lycansis set mostly within the walls of vampire lord Viktor’s (Bill Nighy) castle, so the film’s silver, black, and blue palette reflects a world happening under moonlight. From the outset, when Viktor brings Lucian, the first werewolf, into the world, this villainous bloodsucker’s daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), is smitten with Lucian’s hairy appearance and instinctual intelligence. As years pass, Lucian grows tired of watching his race suffer slavery and imprisonment, and recruits a human named Raze (Kevin Grevioux) to assist rebellion. This archetypal plot is not so riveting, and what carriesUnderworld: Rise of the Lycansare the battle scenes between vampires and werewolves, which are excitingly fast-paced and brutal. The whole film adopts a medieval battlefield aesthetic that carries an otherwise clichéd story about illicit love and freedom fighting. Some characters, like the traitor vampire Tannis (Steven Mackintosh), also intrigues throughout, as one guesses who he will ally with.Underworld: Rise of the Lycansmay not be the finest film in the werewolf and vampire archives independently, but its mixed monstrosity makes it unique and entertaining, especially on a big screen.--Trinie Dalton

(TrueBlood Fan)
『It has been quite some time since I had HBO. When I heard all the fuss about True Blood though, I had to check it out. Living in the UK, I waited with anticipation for the first episode to air over here. I'll admit, I was really thrown off by the rather graphic sex scenes at first, I had to make sure we were watching what I thought we were watching. I'm not a prude by any means, it just threw me off. Once I got over the initial surprise though, I loved the show!!! We made it for 3 weeks before I decided I couldn't survive one episode a week and just ordered the complete season one!』

(Addictive)
『Addictive!! Thats how i describe this show, simply addictive. I love vampires and their world and this show gives a new fresh feeling to a well known subject. Heads Up Book Fans!!! I have read all of books in The Southern Vampire Mysteries and the show is not precisely based on the books, more like loosely inspired by. We have the same characters we love, some of the same rules and the basic story-line. But the series is definitely independent. Still i love it; is a great vampire show, not necessarily a good book translation, but a great show nonetheless.

If you are looking for a sexy (bordering horny), character-driven (a lot of drama going on), supernatural drama this is your show. Get it, banned the minors from the room, and enjoy!!!

However if you are expecting to see a play-by-play of the book you might want to get it borrowed or rented first instead of buying. To be fair to the production of this show the first season basically encompasses the ups and downs of young Telepath Sookie Stackhouse and the beggining of her involvement in a fantastic world she never dream could possibly exist; close enough to how it goes on the first book, Dead Until Dark.』

(Best new show 2008!)
『I fell in love with this show from the very first show. It has the depth and breadth of a really good crime drama, the suspense of a great mystery, and amazing special effects and science fiction elements. This has become one of my all time favorite shows and I could not wait to get it on blu ray to see it again and again.』

(Buy Season One, but Rent Season Two)
『Whether you're in to vampire movies or not, you'll get drawn in to this series. It is an imaginative, original story line with some good spins and a nice sprinkle of romance, humor, and a little thrill. The good thing is, you won't spend too much time in front of the tube, because Season Two starts to drag on and wraps it up nice enough that you'll be glad it's over. I have friends that have read the complete book series, and they are still waiting on Season 3, but for the rest of us that have not read the books, we're not looking forward to any more episodes.』

(One of the best tv shows today.)
『Very good acting, story and one of the best vampire tv shows out there. Once you start you hate to stop watching.』
『TRUE BLOOD chronicles the backwoods Louisiana town of Bon Temps... where vampires have emerged from the coffin, and no longer need humans for their fix. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, Academy Award®-winner for “The Piano”) works as a waitress at the rural bar Merlotte's. Though outwardly a typical young woman, she keeps a dangerous secret: she has the ability to hear the thoughts of others. Her situation is further complicated when the bar gets its first vampire patron - 173-year old Bill Compton (Steven Moyer, "Quills") - and the two outsiders are immediately drawn to each other. Delivering the best of what audiences have come to expect from Creator and Executive Producer Alan Ball (writer of Oscar®-winning Best Picture "American Beauty", creator of the Emmy® Award-winning HBO®series “Six Feet Under"), TRUE BLOOD is a dark and sexy tale that boldly delves into the heart - and the neck - of the Deep South.』
『Alan Ball’sTrue Bloodseries works well for television, as it has enough sensationalism to tantalize and enough story girth to make the viewer care about the characters. That one can finally invest emotion into monsters, including an undead Civil War victim, a transformer who can shapeshift into various animals, and a female mind reader, speaks volumes about America’s willingness to accept fantasy. Of course, television has always produced good fantasy shows (I Dream of Genie), butTrue Blood’sSouthern Goth brand of fun horror is more macabre and more perverse, not to mention gorier, than most shows of its kind to date. Adapted from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels,True Bloodthrills because of its equal blend in each episode of erotica, humor, tragedy, mystery, and fantasy.

Set in a rural, swampy Louisiana parrish, the show centers around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her clan, sweet grandmother Adele (Lois Smith) and air-headed brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Illicit love is spawned early on, when Sookie saves vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from having his blood stolen in the parking lot of Merlotte’s diner, owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) who completes what will form a complex love triangle. As tensions between Sookie’s suitors loosen or tighten, many side plots, such as her African American best friend Tara’s (Rutina Wesley) struggle with an alcoholic, Bible-thumping mother and her brother’s dangerous crush on drug addicted hippie, Amy Burley (Lizzy Caplan), keep one wondering who will succeed in this podunk place. The main tension throughout, however, is a race war waged between vampires and humans. As murders of “fang bangers” occur (human girls who let vampires bitethem) and dumb policeman Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) fails to find clues, one sees the metaphorical implications of vampirism and feels deeper resonance with what can be a downright trashy show. Gossip galore, especially about what kinds of babies interbreeding will produce, is rampant. One of the funniest characters is Tara’s flamboyant cousin, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), who deals drugs, works as a fry cook, and services the local white politicians, while making sure he’s always up in everyone’s business.

What makesTrue Bloodsmarter than pure soap opera is the parallels it draws between its monster mash and actual, familiar societal problems. Sookie and her friends watch the news, where Evangelicals bash vampires and prohibit mixed marriage, and everyone is addicted to V, a.k.a vampire blood, that effects like psychedelic heroin. Even its gore reflects a mix of serious and silly, as vampires explode into red, sticky goop. Though it may not be attempting to qualify for the best vampire footage ever shot,True Bloodis as addictive as that substance the town’s youth obsesses over, which is a metaphor in itself. --Trinie Dalton

(Silly and Over-the-top)
『On Rotten Tomatoes, this movie got around a 92% fresh - which means that it's classified as a "good movie." I usually trust the critics, and decided to go see it. I'm still in shock to the fact that i can't get my money or two hours of my life back for this terrible movie.
Now, I understand that it was categorized as a "black comedy"...but there was nothing funny or even remotely "cool" about it. The CGI animation was terrible, and looked like a cheap video game. The acting was bad, and the slapstick material came off as forced and didn't even crack a smile out of me. The storyline was really weak too - I knew right from the beginning what was going to happen to her. Don't forget about the gross-out scenes; there were plenty of those, and if you like snot and saliva, you'll really enjoy this one.
No more Sam Raimi movies for me.』

(It's About Time!)
『Finally, a horror movie worth a review. This story is original for the most part. It has great special effects. The acting is way above par, and it made me jump a time or two.
The story is about a woman who is struggling to be someone she really isn't. She must act refined and well educated around her boyfriend's parents to "fit in". She also must be all business-like and uncaring to a degree, in her job at a bank, to try an get a promotion. During this time, an old gypsy woman goes to her for help. She needs a loan extension, but unfortunately is refused, and that is when all "hell" breaks loose. A curse is put on our lead character and the main story begins...The action hardly ever lets up and the ending is awesome!
Sam Raimi did an excellent job with this and I would have to say it is my favorite of his to date! I would highly recommend this movie.』

(Better than Expected)
『Great movie. I was not expecting much, thus I was really shocked during the car fight with the Gyspy woman from the bank. Goodness! The rest of the movie was also entertaining, right up to the very end too.』

(Pretty Bad)
『It started off fun and scary and then got worse. When the goat started talking I was like really?? OK I hate this movie.』

(Not as good as I had hoped)
『I love good horror films. This was one is just OK. Special effects seem a bit heavy handed and cheesy.
Story is good but wanders and I never really cared what happened to the main characters. Some good shock moments and all-in-all fun to watch. Just not what I thought it would be.』

『Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is on her way to having it all: a devoted boyfriend (Justin Long), a hard-earned job promotion, and a bright future. But when she’s forced to make a tough decision that evicts an elderly woman from her house, Christine becomes the victim of an evil curse. Now she has only three days to dissuade a dark spirit from stealing her soul before she is dragged to hell for an eternity of unthinkable torment. Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man and The Evil Dead Trilogy) returns to the horror genre with a vengeance in the film that critics rave is “the most crazy, fun and terrifying horror movie in years!” (Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly)』
『Touted as a return to Sam Raimi's horror-movie roots,Drag Me to Hellis indeed closer in spirit to the director'sEvil Deadpictures than to hisSpider-Manfilms. You got your gypsy gargoyles with rotted dentures, your upchucking corpses, your flexible two-way orifices--yes, Raimi's definitely back in the saddle. There's even a story: a sad loan officer (Alison Lohman) turns down the aforementioned denture-wearing gypsy for a loan extension, which leads to an evil curse and a date in hell in three days' time. A séance, an animal sacrifice, and a session in a storm-tossed graveyard will make the 72 hours pass very nervously, thank you, along with assorted scares. Justin Long plays Lohman's upper-class boyfriend, and Raimi fills the rest of the cast with some unusual and unfamiliar types. Along with the giddy horror-comedy that bursts out of the movie every 10 minutes or so, there's also an underlying mood of pity: Lohman's character is something of a hard-luck sad sack, who does enough wrong things to make her seem like a truly abject individual, well outside the heroic model of most multiplex offerings. (Lohman's own little-girl-lost quality adds to this feeling.) But don't let that get in the way of the fun-ride aspects of this goofy enterprise:Drag Me to Hellis a bunch of Z-movie gags wrapped in top-drawer production values.--Robert Horton

『I'm glad this was finally brought onto DVD. We had it recorded off tv, but seeing the unedited version was much more entertaining and I loved watching it again! The music is great and the storyline is interesting, not to mention it is fun to see some of the other actors making a special appearance, especially Steve Martin's character!』

(Great movie)

『The off-Broadway comedy-horror-musical hit that ran for years makes a successful transfer to film with a bevy of big-name cameos and two perfectly cast leads. Rick Moranis is the nebbish Seymour, who pines for flower-girl Audrey (Ellen Greene) while living in the basement of florist Mr. Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia). Things start turning around for Seymour, though, after he buys a little plant during a solar eclipse, christens it Audrey II, and discovers that it likes to drink blood. Soon enough, though, Seymour finds out that Audrey II, now grown to epic proportions, is in actuality a "mean green mother from outer space" that is hell-bent on world domination. Based on the 1960 Roger Corman cheapie that featured a young Jack Nicholson,Little Shopboasts a hilarious, amazing score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who would go on to revitalize Disney's animation arm withThe Little MermaidandBeauty and the Beast. Greene, the lone holdover from the original cast, is a ravishing, goofy Audrey, whose awkward demeanor belies a voice that could knock Ethel Merman off her feet. She's ably matched by Moranis, whose lack of a singing voice is perfectly in sync with Seymour's nerdiness. And Levi Stubbs Jr. of the Four Tops provides the lowdown, nasty-minded voice of Audrey II; his rendition of the Oscar-nominated "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" is a showstopper. As for those celebrity cameos, Steve Martin's sadistic dentist is a masterful creation, as is Bill Murray's masochistic patient; John Candy, James Belushi, and Christopher Guest also pop up. And there was never a lovelier and funkier Greek chorus than the three Motown-fueled girls (Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, and Tisha Campbell) who appear throughout the film.--Mark Englehart

(Very nice collection!)
『This is a nice collection presentation. I would recommend it to your friends who enjoy the classics from this masterful director.

(Waiting for Blu-Ray? Nah...)
『I'm a big hi-def fan. I love my Blu-Rays and don't buy too many DVDs anymore. But I bought this. The simple fact is that it's a great value, and we don't know how long it will be until each and every one of these 14 movies is on Blu-Ray. Or if they all will be. So far we've only now just gotten North by Northwest on Blu, and that's from a different studio and thus isn't included in this box set anyway.

HDNet did a marathon of many of these same Hitchcock movies, and I still had them on my Tivo to compare. I think they do look a little better than the DVDs do upconverted on my Panasonic BD-60 player. But I don't think that these are new HD masters from source, with the kind of cleanup we'd expect on a top-notch Blu-Ray transfer. I think they probably just upconverted them from the same DVD source using better equipment than I have. I could be wrong, but I suspect this also in part for simple economics -- if they'd spent the money to remaster them for HDNet, I'd expect they'd be pushing them out on BD pretty fast to cash in on it. And as far as I know, HDNet is not re-running these often.

So if you want BDs, you're probably waiting for Universal to decide it makes sense to spend the money on commissioning 14 different expensive remasters and releases. And even if they do that, it'll be awhile before you see them anywhere close to this price. And if on top of that you want a nice box set to have them all packaged up, it'll be even longer. And if you want that box set at a good price, it'll be even longer still.

Therefore, even if you are lamenting the lack of Hitchcock on Blu-Ray and feeling like you should wait for it to happen, I'd still buy this if you're a fan. Especially if you see a great deal like the Gold Box deal from early November 2009. If/when some of your favorites start coming out in BD, you can upgrade if you see fit. In the meantime, this is the best way to be able to enjoy 14 of Hitchcock's masterpieces whenever you want, and at a great price.』

(Very Excellent!!!)
『Of the collections available, I'd say this is the best, with many of his top movies. Of course, with only 14 movies in this collection, there's sure to be a couple favorites that aren't included, but if you could only get one collection, this is it. Even if you needed to get more than one collection, this should be one of them.

With movies like Rope, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, Psycho, and The Birds, this collection is already worth it, and there's eight more.

These films span 1942 through 1972, and include some notable stars. You'll find James Bond, Mary Poppins, Cool Hand Luke (the guy, not the movie), the very excellent Jimmy Stewart in a few, the girl from The Apartment, Perry Mason, Charlie's Angels' boss (that would be Charlie), the angel from It's a Wonderful Life, and even a guy named Ludwig.

They come in a nice, felt-like box, which is a little bigger than it has to be, yet takes up much less space than buying the 14 films individually.

I like this collection so much, I'm almost thinking of buying it again, but I really don't need it twice.

(Best video collection I own)
『This is an excellent collection full of much of the best of Hitch. Very nice velvety box makes for an elegant presentation. Each movie is on its own disc and many have a documentary about the film with original cast members and Hitch's daughter Pat. Unfortunately there isn't one on the Psycho disc.』

(Why The Hell Isn't "North by Northwest" Here?)
『This sounds like a terrific boxed set, and a deal, but it's missing one of his best known films. Not including that great movie, this set is incomplete. That's what I thought, and then I discovered a companion release.

The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection (Strangers on a Train Two-Disc Edition / North by Northwest / Dial M for Murder / Foreign Correspondent / Suspicion / The Wrong Man / Stage Fright / I Confess / Mr. and Mrs. Smith)

These 2 sets would make an excelent addition to anyones collection. I hope someday to own them both.

In checking this out I went to IMDB.com. I had no Ideal how many films he had made in his career, dating back to the silent era (he was born in 1899).

『14 of the finest works from the universally acclaimed Master of Suspense come together for the first time in one collection. These captivating landmark films boast three decades of Hollywood legends, including James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Anthony Perkins, Sean Connery and Doris Day. The premium packaging and collectible book make Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection the must-own, definitive anthology of gripping works by a true genius.』
『Masterpiece indeed. With 14 films, each supplemented with numerous documentaries, commentaries, and other bonus materials,Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collectionwill be the cornerstone for any serious DVD library. Packaged in a beautiful, conversation-starting velvet box, the individual discs inside come four to a case, decorated with original poster art.
No doubt opinionated fans will argue about what should fall under the rubric of "masterpiece" in Hitchcock's body of work, but with the bona fide classicsVertigo,Psycho, andThe Man Who Knew Too Much, there's plenty of timeless movie magic here. Eye-popping transfers and gorgeous sound make this set one of the must-have releases of the year.

Should the Hitchcock fan have the energy for more after imbibing on the movies themselves, a bonus disc provides additional documentaries. These include a revealing interview in which the master of suspense discusses, among other things, how much he dislikes working with method actors, going so far as to name names (we're talking about you, Jimmy Stewart and Montgomery Clift). In an American Film Institute lifetime achievement ceremony, the master of suspense is praised by the likes of Stewart and Ingrid Bergman, and seems to be suffering from severe boredom as celebrities pile on the flattery. Then Hitchcock opens his mouth to accept the award, delivering an endlessly witty stream of perfect bon mots that prove once again that he was a master of high comedy as well. Revealing documentaries about the making ofPsychoandThe Birdsround out the feast of extras. The 36-page booklet, filled mostly with stills and poster art, provides little new information about the films.--Ryan Boudinot

Saboteur
Robert Cummings stars as Barry Kane, a patriotic munitions worker who is falsely accused of sabotage, in this wartime thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Plastered across the front page of every newspaper and hated by the nation, Kane's only hope of clearing his name is to find the real villain. The script as a whole is a clever one--Algonquin wit Dorothy Parker shares a screenwriting credit, and her trademark zingers make for a terrific mix of humor and suspense.Saboteuris a pleasure whether you're a die-hard Hitchcock fan or just someone who likes a good nail-biter.--Ali Davis

Shadow of a Doubt
Alfred Hitchcock considered this 1943 thriller to be his personal favorite among his own films, and although it's not as popular as some of Hitchcock's later work, it's certainly worthy of the master's admiration. Scripted by playwright Thornton Wilder and inspired by the actual case of a 1920's serial killer known as "The Merry Widow Murderer," the movie sets a tone of menace and fear by introducing a psychotic killer into the small-town comforts of Santa Rosa, California. Through narrow escapes and a climactic scene aboard a speeding train, this witty thriller strips away the façade of small-town tranquility to reveal evil where it's least expected. And, of course, it's all done in pure Hitchcockian style.--Jeff Shannon

Rope
An experimental film masquerading as a standard Hollywood thriller,Ropeis simple and based on a successful stage play: two young men (John Dall and Farley Granger) commit murder, more or less as an intellectual exercise. They hide the body in their large apartment, then throw a dinner party. Will the body be discovered? Director Alfred Hitchcock, fascinated by the possibilities of the long-take style, decided to shoot this story as though it were happening in one long, uninterrupted shot. Since the camera can only hold one 10-minute reel at a time, Hitchcock had to be creative when it came time to change reels, disguising the switches as the camera passed behind someone's back or moved behind a lamp. James Stewart, as a suspicious professor, marks his first starring role for Hitchcock, a collaboration that would lead to the masterpiecesRear WindowandVertigo.--Robert Horton

Rear Window
Like the Greenwich Village courtyard view from its titular portal, Alfred Hitchcock's classicRear Windowis both confined and multileveled: both its story and visual perspective are dictated by its protagonist's imprisonment in his apartment, convalescing in a wheelchair, from which both he and the audience observe the lives of his neighbors. Cheerful voyeurism, as well as the behavior glimpsed among the various tenants, affords a droll comic atmosphere that gradually darkens when he sees clues to what may be a murder. At deeper levels,Rear Windowplumbs issues of moral responsibility and emotional honesty, while offering further proof (were any needed) of the director's brilliance as a visual storyteller.--Sam Sutherland

The Trouble with Harry
A busman's holiday for Alfred Hitchcock, this 1955 black comedy concerns a pesky corpse that becomes a problem for a quiet, Vermont neighborhood. Shirley MacLaine makes her film debut as one of several characters who keep burying the body and finding it unburied again. Hitchcock clearly enjoys conjuring the autumnal look and feel of the story, and he establishes an important, first-time alliance with composer Bernard Herrmann, whose music proved vital to the director's next half-dozen or so films. But for now,The Trouble with Harryis a lark, the mischievous side of Hitchcock given free reign.--Tom Keogh

The Man Who Knew Too Much
Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock always said the first was the work of a talented amateur while the second was the act of a seasoned professional. Indeed, several extraordinary moments in this update represent consummate filmmaking, particularly a relentlessly exciting Albert Hall scene, with a blaring symphony, an assassin's gun, and Doris Day's scream. The Man Who Knew Too Muchis the work of a master in his prime.--Tom Keogh

Vertigo
Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958,Vertigohas since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor,Vertigois as lovely as it is haunting.--Jim Emerson

Psycho
For all the slasher pictures that have ripped offPsycho(and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense,Psychois also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night.--Jim Emerson

The Birds
Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes." From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. The Birdsfollows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), as she travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) she's only just met. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds, and Hitchcock's skill at staging action is brought to the fore. Beyond the superb effects, however,The Birdsis also one of Hitchcock's most psychologically complicated scenarios, a tense study of violence, loneliness, and complacency. What really gets under your skin are not the bird skirmishes but the anxiety and the eerie quiet between attacks. Treated with scant attention by serious critics in 1963,The Birdshas grown into a classic and--despite the sci-fi trappings--one of Hitchcock's most serious films.--Robert Horton

Marnie
Sean Connery, fresh from the second Bond picture,From Russia with Love, is a Philadelphia playboy who begins to fall for Tippi Hedren's blonde ice goddess only when he realizes that she's a professional thief; she's come to work in his upper-crust insurance office in order to embezzle mass quantities. His patient program of investigation and surveillance has a creepy, voyeuristic quality that's pure Hitchcock, but all's lost when it emerges that the root of Marnie's problem is phobic sexual frigidity, induced by a childhood trauma. Luckily, Sean is up to the challenge. As it were. Not even D.H. Lawrence believed as fervently as Hitchcock in the curative properties of sexual release.--David Chute

Torn Curtain
Paul Newman and Julie Andrews star in what must unfortunately be called one of Alfred Hitchcock's lesser efforts. Still, sub-par Hitchcock is better than a lot of what's out there, and this one is well worth a look. Newman plays cold war physicist Michael Armstrong, while Andrews plays his lovely assistant-and-fiancée, Sarah Sherman. Armstrong has been working on a missile defense system that will "make nuclear defense obsolete," and naturally both sides are very interested. All Sarah cares about is the fact that Michael has been acting awfully fishy lately. The suspense ofTorn Curtainis by nature not as thrilling as that in the average Hitchcock film--much of it involves sitting still and wondering if the bad guys are getting closer. Still, Hitchcock manages to amuse himself: there is some beautifully clever camera work and an excruciating sequence that illustrates the frequent Hitchcock point that death is not a tidy business.--Ali Davis

Topaz
Alfred Hitchcock hadn't made a spy thriller since the 1930s, so his 1969 adaptation of Leon Uris's bestseller seemed like a curious choice for the director. But Hitchcock makes Uris's story of the West's investigation into the Soviet Union's dealings with Cuba his own. Frederick Stafford plays a French intelligence agent who works with his American counterpart (John Forsythe) to break up a Soviet spy ring. The film is a bit flat dramatically and visually, and there are sequences that seem to occupy Hitchcock's attention more than others. A minor work all around, with at least two alternative endings shot by Hitchcock.--Tom Keogh

Frenzy
Alfred Hitchcock's penultimate film, written by Anthony Shaffer (who also wroteSleuth), this delightfully grisly little tale features an all-British cast minus star wattage, which may have accounted for its relatively slim showing in the States. Jon Finch plays a down-on-his-luck Londoner who is offered some help by an old pal (Barry Foster). In fact, Foster is a serial killer the police have been chasing--and he's framing Finch. Which leads to a classic Hitchcock situation: a guiltless man is forced to prove his innocence while eluding Scotland Yard at the same time. Spiked with Hitchcock's trademark dark humor,Frenzyalso features a very funny subplot about the Scotland Yard investigator (Alec McCowen) in charge of the case, who must endure meals by a wife (Vivien Merchant) who is taking a gourmet-cooking class.--Marshall Fine

Family Plot
Alfred Hitchcock's final film is understated comic fun that mixes suspense with deft humor, thanks to a solid cast. The plot centers on the kidnapping of an heir and a diamond theft by a pair of bad guys led by Karen Black and William Devane. The cops seem befuddled, but that doesn't stop a questionable psychic (Barbara Harris) and her not overly bright boyfriend (Bruce Dern, in a rare good-guy role) from picking up the trail and actually solving the crime. Did she do it with actual psychic powers? That's part of the fun of Harris's enjoyably ditsy performance.--Marshall Fine

(About this Blu-Ray...)
『First of all, this really is a stunning, staggering, heart-wrenching film. It's sad and beautiful world (as Jim Jarmusch might say) full of flawed characters, and Ellen Burstyn was magnificent. That Julia Roberts won Best Actress over her is a crime against decent film-lovers everywhere. But be fore-warned: Based on the novel by Hubert Selby, this is NOT a plucky, feel-good experience. It's overwhelmingly raw, and probably not for all tastes ( I'm looking at you, Norbit fans)

But, as for this disc: Here is a prime example of why people bother upgrading their media to the latest-and-greatest format. Daily, I have to fight the urge to waste money on new versions of movies I already own (&I did already own the fine Requiem for a Dream (Director's Cut) DVD of this), but I couldn't resist a film that looks and sounds this good. [Side note: The Kronos Quartet soundtrack is spectacular.]

If you've already got the setup (HDTV or projector, sound system, etc) than you can do a lot worse. And for even more eye-candy, give The Fountain a try.』

(A great movie!)
『Despite of the raw content of the movie, I give this movie 5 stars because the director of the film is able to show the underground world where people may be left while consuming any kind of drugs. It is dramatic, powerful, sad and shocking.
Furthermore, blu-ray movies are the only way to watch movies at home. Therefore, Requiem for a Dream is a highly recommended movie and its quality just awesome.』

(RELAX AND ENJOY A SUPERB MOVIE)
『This outstanding piece of art should be seen by every teen thinking of escaping into some placating world away from a disturbing environment they call reality. I wish I had when I was younger. Do not try to figure out what to expect, do not dissect every frame with pompous imaginings like some viewers and commenters like MauricioD. He seems to be obsessed with his definition of surrealism. I'm sure Aronofsky didn't look in a dictionary to mold his movie or to be weighed down by a definition. Surreal is in the eyes of the beholder. Just sit back and be mesmerized by a well-woven story with a powerful message. It will blow you away! It's worth 3 times the price. I recently purchased a second copy to give to my 15-yr old nephew, and we will sit down and have a long talk afterwards.』

(Great movie, Great quality)
『If you haven't seen this movie, you should. It's pretty deep. Seeing it again on Blu-ray makes it that much more intense.』

(Fantastic Movie)
『Requiem for a Dream is the movie I saw when I was younger that was such a great movie and also an advocate to not do drugs. This is the kind of movie they should show in schools to deter them from choosing the druggy lifestyle.』
