(Interesting movie..)
『Wow! There is a large amount of action in this movie! It is a good movie but it can make you look behind you while in a room alone after you watch it..That's for sure. Whew!』

(Not THAT bad, but...)
『But it reminded me how much the late 90's/early 00's sucked for horror movies! Most of the "big" horror movies from back then (including this one) have dumb plots, dumb characters, clichés, stupid and/or predictable twists, endings that don't make much sense, an abundance of cheap jump scares, ... It's as if those who made them thought that having a lot of special effects was more important than having a good plot, good characters, good scares, etc... This movie, The Haunting, Ghost Ship, House on Haunted Hill (I liked it a bit though), Fear Dot Com, Phantoms, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Jason X, The Rage: Carrie 2, Blair Witch 2, etc... are all very lame. Many of them were made with big budgets, but they all feel cheap. Seriously, the horror genre is much bettertoday! and of course, it was much better before the 90's.

Don't get me wrong though, I know that some horror movies from the late 90's/early 00's are great.』

(Fun Movie that Should Have Been Much Better)
『Considering this is a remake of the William Castle "gimmick" b-movie, "Thirteen Ghosts" is more entertaining than it should be, but not a good as it could have been.

What I mean to say is that while I love the William Castle original film, Castle's version was more of a comedy with a nifty 3-D gimmick thrown in. The basic story of a family inheriting a haunted mansion was pure sitcom at best. And while there are some chills sprinkled through the original film, the humor is what I remember most about the film.

The remake does away with all of the humor and attempts to go for the jugular as a pure horror film. The basic storyline remains the same in that a family inherits a haunted house from a ghost hunting uncle. And like the original, 12 spirits inhabit the house...so who is the thirteenth ghost? You have to watch to find out.

Tony Shalhoub turns in a solid performance as Arthur Kriticos, the widower and family man who inherits the haunted home from his uncle. Shalhoub was only 1 year away from striking gold with his TV show "Monk" when this film came out, and I find it difficult watching "Thirteen Ghosts" now, and not thinking of the Monk character obsessing about fingerprints all over the glass house?!?! The rest of the cast is solid as well, with F. Murray Abraham chewing up scenes as the ghost hunting uncle and Matthew Lillard still hunting ghosts here in his pre-Shaggy days.

The special effects are pretty good, and the make-up for the various ghosts looks great. The glass house featured in the film is pretty inventive, and adds a nice touch of atmosphere. There are a few bumps and jumps that will jolt you out of your seat sprinkled throughout the film, but there is nothing in the movie that will stick with you past the end credits.

If you enjoyed the remake of "The House on Haunted Hill", then you will probably enjoy this film as well. If you are looking for a spooky ghost story along the lines of "The Changeling", you will probably be disappointed.

(THE DVD WAS SCRATCHED AND UNWATCHABLE)
『GRANTED I ONLY SPENT 4 DOLLARS, BUT, I SHOULD AT LEAST BE ABLE TO WATCH THE CRAPPY MOVIE I CHOSE. IF U HAVE A DVD THAT U CAN'T WATCH YOURSELF YOU SHOULDN'T SELL IT TO MAKE A FEW DOLLARS.』

(Unlucky '13')
『Ghost hunter Cyrus Kriticos (F.Murray Abraham) is on a mission to capture the souls of 13 ghosts so that he can unleash a hellish power on Earth. With the assistance of a psychic named Dennis (Matthew Lillard), Cyrus catches 12 souls before being killed on a hunt. Cyrus's nephew Arthur (Tony Shaloub) is a widower with two kids (Shannon Elizabeth plays the oldest) and a housekeeper (Rah Digga) to support. In financial trouble and in risk of being evicted from his apartment Arthur gets some much needed relief when a lawyer representing Cyrus's estate shows up at his door. He informs Arthur that he is the inheritor of his uncle's mansion. The mansion is a spectacular structure made out of glass that Arthur and his family are all too eager to move into. The only problem is that they also inherit the 12 souls that Cyrus captured. Dennis is also there looking for the money Cyrus owed him and together he and Arthur learn that there is a 13th ghost and only Arthur can catch him. This is the second Dark Castle (a film company created by Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis that re-imagines the 50's and 60's horror films of director William Castle for modern audiences) film after 'House On Haunted Hill'. Both films start off very promising establishing a creepy vibe and the promise of genuine scares before tripping over complicated plot twists that cause the film to be boring and not frightening. This film starts off great beginning in an abandoned junkyard then moving to Arthur's claustrophobic apartment before finally settling in the mansion. There are some wonderfully ominous shots in the beginning but eventually overt gore wins out over any subtlety. The ghosts are definitely disturbing and horrific but they weren't utilized like they should have been. The explanation as to why Arthur is the only man capable of capturing the last ghost is a nice touch and at least provides one unexpected surprise. Shannon Elizabeth factors in the beginning but is absent during the middle act only to reappear in the film's final act. This lets Matthew Lillard, from 'Scream', steal the show. He sells every scene he's in with hyper energy and some good physical comedy. It's a disappointing horror film because it looks like it's going to be fun and scary but is actually little more than a standard gorefest.』
『A family inherits an elegant steel-and-glass mansion from a deceased relative. The catch is that along with the house comes a slew of ghosts that can be seen only through special goggles.』
『Cool sets, gory make-up, and frantic energy are given high priority in this glossy remake of William Castle's 1960 haunted-house chiller. The original boasted its "Illusion-O" ghost-viewing gimmick, so this remake's producers--as they did with 1999'sThe House on Haunted Hill--up the ante on Castle's showmanship by spilling ample amounts of blood, guts, and ghoulish glory. The plot's essentially the same: An impoverished family inherits a luxurious haunted mansion, only this time it's an elaborate, maze-like mechanism of glass, gears, and Latin incantations--"designed by the devil and powered by the dead"--with a cellar full of tormented, undead souls. As the family (including Tony Shalhoub andAmerican Pie's Shannon Elizabeth) enlists the aid of a psychic (Screamalumnus Matthew Lillard) and a ghostbusting paranormal (Embeth Davidtz), this updated13 Ghostsgrows loud and ludicrous, trading shocks for yuks and nuance for nonsense. It's fun, to a point, after which it's just exhausting.--Jeff Shannon

(A Thinking Person's Thriller)
『I enjoy being scared every now and then. I despise most of the current horror films that are little more than semi-porn snuff films.

1408 is not one of these.

John Cusack is wonderful in this film, almost single-handedly carrying the plot forward. Samuel Jackson is great in his supporting role as well.

Scary, edgy, sad, thought-provoking, poignant ... just a good solid adaptation of Stephen King's writing.

Recommended.』

(Don't watch it in the dark!)
『A supuerb horror movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat through out. A cinical travel writer is warned about a hotel and, well, it goes from there. Although there are excellent special effects, the movie doesn't rely on them to make you "jump from your seat". I suppose a night-time viewing is OK, but if your easy to scare, I advise daytime viewing only. Enjoy!』

(Probably the one of the better Stephen Kings.....)
『This is surprisely decent. The ending is a much better ending than the ususal suspense films and is a great surprise in respect to the ususal Stephen King movie adaptations. Pretty good for a short story to movie flick.』

(Another hit of bad acid with Stephan King)
『It's quick to draw you in, and it does fairly get under your skin in a kind of frustrating way, although it's not a seamless movie and you can feel the hand of the movie makers in it too much. Samuel Jackson wasn't convincing as the hotel manager in spite of his two words of French, and he gets more billing than he deserves as he must occupy about 15 minutes worth of movie time. Cusack wasn't bad. The chill factor is akin to the kind of drug paranoia associated with people who went off the deep end with LSD or some other such substance and never 'made it back' (Syd Barret?). Sixties child S. King's work has often been influenced by the psychedelic potential, which offers interesting possibilities for his novels and more so when left to the imagination rather than the screen. There are some decent visual moments in the film, but there are just as many others that simply feel like gaudy Hollywood manipulation. The premise of stepping into this room is that you are stepping into another dimension simutaneously - a dimension which doesn't follow the laws of logic or time, is bent on tormenting those who enter, and from which there is no escape, as it is hardly of this world in the first place. Charming, eh?

The film doesn't really compare with Kubrick's Shining. Yes, they were both Stephan King, yes they both take place in hotels. But where The Shining is a masterful work of art on all levels (story, acting, cinematography), 1408 is a kind of fast food by comparison, with a quick story, so-so character acting and more special effects than dynamite film work. It does leave a mark though as do so many of King's stories, tapping into a kind of primal paranoia. I give this film 3.5 stars, and maybe it deserved 4, but not 5. I'm going to watch the alternate ending on the second dvd now, which supposedly does away with the "happy ending" of the theater version on disc one.』

(Preview was better than movie.)
『I may not be a fair judge of this movie but most of the events in this movie seemed to far fetched. I liked the Shining alot but using that movie to rate this might not be fair?』
『(Thriller) Based on a short story by Stephen King, a man who specializes in debunking the paranormal checks into the infamous room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel, only to discover… the terror is real.』
『As creepfests go,1408is right up there withThe Shining, also inspired by a Stephen King work and featuring a menacing hotel and the wobbly sanity of a writer lodging there. "It's an evil [bleep]-ing room!" intones Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the smooth but vaguely sinister manager of the Dolphin Hotel. John Cusack is stellar as Mike Enslin, a cynical Everyschlub who writes "occult travel guides," but believes in nothing, especially anything resembling an afterlife.

What happens in room 1408 of the Dolphin may change Enslin forever--if he survives the first hour. The thrills range from jumpy "gotcha" moments involving mirror images, to more traditional horror fare like bleeding walls, to truly diabolical touches like the recurrence of the Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun." (Shudder.) The film does a nice job of weaving the operatic horror effects with the truly heart-breaking backstory of the death of Enslin's young daughter and his marriage--perhaps the only two things Enslin has ever believed in. And thankfully, there's just enough humor to leaven the intensity at key moments; Cusack is unparalleled when it comes to delivering a self-deprecating wisecrack, even as his life passes before his eyes. Get your adrenaline pumping and check into this room. Oh, and sorry, no refunds.A.T. Hurley

(A Quick review of Bram Stoker's Dracula)
『This 3 time Academy Award winning movie is based upon Bram Stoker's original novel, Dracula. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) this film is highly original and creative. Coppola takes full advantage of the movie's eerie nature and plays with shadows, settings and costumes. In this version of "Dracula" Coppola tries to bring out Dracula's psychological and emotional aspects. It shows how Dracula had lost his soul and was forced to remain undead for the rest of his life while feeding off the blood of the living. This movie is definitely not for the faint-hearted. In fact, I do not recommend this film for everyone. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder&Keanu Reeves. Warning: This film contains excessive gore, strong&heavy sexuality and nudity.』

(Great movie, horrible Blu-Ray quality)
『I gave this product a five, because the film is fantastic and Amazon hasn't figured out how to separate the various mediums of a single movie version yet, but THE QUALITY OF THE BLU-RAY DISC IS HORRIBLE. This is one of my all-time favorite films, but I quickly traded it in, despite having already sold off my DVD copy (which was of better quality), because it looked that bad...and I'm not particularly picky! How can studios be allowed to rip off the public like this? "Here's your nifty new Blu-Ray version of your favorite movie! Oh wait, did we forget to tell you that we made the transfer from an old VCR tape we had laying around? Sorry, but you can't return it, because you've already opened it." I'd love to see some class action suits filed for this and other movies I've heard similar reviews of, because this is seriously defrauding the public.

In regard to the film itself, the costumes, sets, storyline and music are all top notch, despite a miniscule budget. The movie follows fairly closely to the novel and those changes that are made, due justice to the story, in my opinion. Most of the acting is good, if not great, the exceptions being typically-dull Keanu and Oldman's best performance to date, in my opinion. That this film got so little Academy consideration in a week Oscar year has always befuddled me. If you like the book, horror movies or Gary Oldman, don't miss this one.』

(Problematic but Theatrically Brilliant 85%)
『When it comes to vampires, there are many, many ways to approach such a creature and it's whole sorrounding aura. Some people seem to take it seriously and actually see these creatures as terrifying personifcations of evil. Some, like the Twilight people, believe some ham handed epic crap (seriously. What was wit the horribly hammy and maddenigly silly New Moon anyway?). Others have, well, I don't know just how many you can name since all people are different and have different visions. There are tons and tons of ways of portraying one of fiction's most celebrated and loved figures, the vampire. And if you ask some people, I'll bet that everybody will give a different answer on their personal preference on the take of the Vampire (screwy wording, I know).

For me? Unlike some people, I never find the vampire to be a terrifying personification of evil, as the vampire is largely a fictional character and the whole evil notion never clicked with me. Don't even get me started on Twilight (hate that movie). I like my vampire stories to be theatrical, somewhat over the top, one that absolutely BATHES in lush visuals, sound, and characters that are equally as theatrical, so much it's like playing dress up (okay that just sounds plain gay). I don't quite know how to put it in words, but it's the similar feeling I share with a Nightwish song. You just love the whole theatricality but still know how to treat it like a theater production.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (though not quite as faithful as you would want to believe) is such a movie, one that has so much lushness, so much theatricality, and so much heavy handedness that it's more of an opera than anything else. It's an acquired taste, and to begin with, I have to be in a certain mood to even think of enjoying this movie. Sometimes, I feel absolutely nothing when watching, only sterility and not engaged with this movie on any emotional level. Other times, the movie is so hamhanded and theatrical that I can't help but go into fits of laugher at how stupid some of the movie sounds. But when I get into that mood, nothing quite draws me into this movie.

ACTING AND CHARACTERS 7/10

Bram Stoker's Dracula has lot's of heavy hitters in it's large ensemble cast, starting with Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, who make up the starring cast. Unlike some people, I think the cast does a great job, even if some of the dialogue coming from Ryder and (especially Reeves) sometimes makes me laugh. Gary Oldman is easily the best actor out of all this movie, considering he has to play young Dracula, Vllad Dracula, creepy Dracula monster, old Dracula, and wolf Dracula. He does all of these with ease. Anthony Hopkins is great as Van Helsing as well. He's sometimes strangely hilarious, but As far as women go, Sadie Frost, Winona Ryder and the three actresses that make up Dracula's brides are all sexy. I suppose Reeves is the worst, and when I laugh at the movie, it mostly comes from his stupid attempts at drama (his only real performance is Bill and Ted's, but even I could have played that role). But I digress at the performances. They may be highly operatic, but given the reasons why I like this movie, asking anything less would ruin the whole thing.

Oh, and did I mention Tom Waits is in this as Reinfield? Amazing weird music master blows every other Reinfold out of the water.

The characters are probably the weakest point of the movie, they are great and all, but I never really thought the other characters of Dracula stand out well on their own, you have to have good portayles to make me care (thankfully they did a pretty good job). But Dracula has always, in my opinion, been memorable because, well, it's friggin' Dracula.

PLOT 7/10

Judging from the title of the movie, you would probably think that Bram Stoker's Dracula is very much faithful to the source book, but as many people have said before, this is not true. Minor characters have been deleted, there is not much nudity in the book, and Dracula ultimately is more evil than he is in the movie. Most of all, the novel does not fall into the romance genre, and while this movie is not entirely a romance movie (thank god), it still has a romantic subplot thrown in. Even though Dracula is a more sympathetic character this time around, it still has the same type of plot for the most part, with him hunting down Mina, buying up land in London, killing Lucy, and so forth. Reincarnation, redemption, damnation, curses, and living for centuries makes it's way into this movie.

Now, when it comes to movies, there is NO genre I hate more than romance. However I still thought I was drawn into the energy Oldman and Ryder put into their performances. Besides, I like the fact that Dracula was unhinged, while Harker was completely stiff and very typical of a person that probalby existed in the late 19th century. Even though. And I'm not quite sure if Dracula's reaction to the suicide of his wife is still a very good thing to do. Are you quite sure there are other things that are worth your attention. How about the breakthroughs of art and science?

Still though, I would have to go with my real feelings and say the romance didn't really bother me thanks to the fact I never take this movie too seriously. Was I moved by the romance? Nope. Anybody who takes this seriously needs to grow some balls. However, I think it's pretty interesting actually to see something like a 400 year old curse being lifted thanks to virtue or something be restored. Remember, were dealing with reincarnation of a 400 year old vampire who renounced god in the 14th century. I feel, that, despite some advances in art and science, in the 15th century there was a lot less to believe in besides a lovely bride (well, Winona is damn good looking anyway) and god. This was a time where we didn't have as many people who really knew religion is a bunch of _______. For me it makes the story a bit more believable than drake bell's latest cinematic turd.

However, I'm still going to take some points off for the romance. I just think this movie would be much better if it didn't have the romanntic subplot, and just went with the man who practiced black magic. Sorry, but that's much cooler even though it's obviously a bunch of baloney as much as the love story.

DIRECTING (EDITING, SPECIAL EFFECTS, SOUND DESIGN) 10/10

One of the most well known things about this movie are the special effects, which are all done with old fashioned cinematic tricks instead of the newly emerging CGI. And it's not subtle, as it's everywhere, and really adds to the story. Dracula casts shadows, walks down walls like a friggin's spider, green fog, and even turns into rats. It doesn't stop with Dracula either. Coppola's visual tricks include putting three images on screen at once (such as the part where Harker is on the train), Flowers deterioating into a dead flower, making rats walk upside down, and even friggin' waves of blood coming from both sides of the room. This movie never let's up in giving you a godly amount of great special effects that enchance the movie. The only CGI in the whole movie is the blue ring of fire near the beginning of the movie.

Coppola's directing is also very great, as it's probably as effective as the special effects. It's kind of hyperkinetic, but I wouldn't lie if I said it's just beautiful to look at. I love his many shots he uses, especially those close ups. An example of this beauty would be the scene with the absinthe. Never before and never again will a movie capture something as trivial as alcohol again. Oh, and he even uses cameras to make the scene in London look like...what is that camera called? I digress.

Another great thing I love about this movie is the sound design, which actually won an academy award. With it's ambience, it's library of ghostly and creepy sounds, and intense sound effects from the creatures, it's so well done that I can't help but be immeresed in the movie thanks to it. Sound design is a lot more important than one might think, and this movie would definitely be lost without it. How come nobody mentions how great it is?

ART DIRECTION 10/10

I have only one word for this aspect: _____! Sure, the razzle dazzle of this movie will some of it's freshness if I watch it way too much, but I don't anyway. Coppola and company pull no punches in toning down anything regarding art direction (probably nothing even subtle), and the result is a theatrically stunning and meticolous jewel of art direction. The whole movie just looks and feels amazing, and even somebody who normally doesn't care much about things like costume design can't help but sit up and take notice at everything of it's design. The music, the sets, the costumes (or make up even! Someone had to make Oldman look old), you just have to give props for everything. I don't quite know how to describe the look of the film, since I have little to no explanations on what architecture is used, what kind of style the costumes are, or the music's style. However, I'm still kind of burned this movie didn't win all Four Oscars instead of three. I thought the art direction was amazingly well done. Overall, the art direction is so good I really excalimed something the first time I saw this movie on Television.

In my mind, this is probably my favorite Dracula movie, for the reason that it's totally theatrical and bombastic. I never take vampire movies too seriously to begin with, so what makes you think I'm going to be scared by the outtdated Tod Browning movie? Sure, Bela Lugosi's portrayle is actually much better than Oldman (then again, what is?), but it's clunky and hasn't held up very well in my opinion (while it's not a bad movie, it just has problems). One could say this movie hasn't held up well, but I beg to differ as far as I'm concered. This is a great vampire movie, and for the right audiences, it's a definite version. Recommended.』

『Francis Ford Coppola returns to Stoker's novel for this umpteenth take of the Transylvanian bloodsucker. Gary Oldman plays the vampire, Dracula, doomed to be a creature of the night after forsaking God but aroused by the image of a British woman (Winona Ryder) who resembles his own lost love. Oldman does well by the monster, even if he doesn't register much personality in the process, and Anthony Hopkins is a little overachieving as the vampire killer Van Helsing. The rest of the cast is serviceable, except Keanu Reeves, who--not atypically--is wooden and somehow empty. Coppola seems to approach the film as chunks of experimental opportunity, some of which work out all right while others are mannered or even foolish. What is undeniable is the tremendous buzz of the film's energy, particularly in a fantastic middle sequence that plays like a psychedelic nightmare. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen formats, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish and Korean subtitles.--Tom Keogh
『Francis Ford Coppola's 1992Bram Stoker's Draculais a feverishly inventive movie that often overwhelms its own narrative flow, yet proves irresistible to watch. In the high-definition transfer on this two-discCollector's Edition, Coppola's baroque, operatic set design, costumes, and cinematography look as lavish as they did on the film's first release. The director's grab-bag of visual effects are still bold and unabashed, if often over-the-top, and the actors still appear caught up in a certain hysterical pitch that feels a little forced but can be a lot of fun to watch. Gary Oldman's imaginative performance as the titular vampire carries the weight of Coppola's vision of Count Dracula as a tragic-romantic hero with Christ-like overtones. Keanu Reeves still looks a little lost in the pivotal role of Jonathan Harker, the London clerk who finds himself a prisoner in a Transylvanian castle while a 400-year-old vampire makes a play for his fiancée back home (Winona Ryder). Anthony Hopkins is fearless as a daft Von Helsing, and Sadie Frost is very good as the doomed Lucy.

The second disc in this set includes several good documentaries, including a featurette on the making of the film, involving past and present interviews with the principal artists involved. (Coppola and screenwriter James V. Hart speak persuasively about their commitment to bringing Stoker’s vision to the screen, rather than another revision.) Another documentary, "In-Camera: The Naïve Visual Effects of 'Dracula,'" is a fascinating overview of Coppola’s sometimes-frustrated effort to get the timeless special effects he was seeking. There are also quite a few deleted scenes amongthe special features, the best of which is an alternative cut to the film’s bloody ending.--Tom Keogh

『Now you can own the entire fourth season of THE X-FILES?. ALL 24 classic episodes are availale for the first time in this exclusive 6-disc collector's edition. From "Herrenvolk," "Home," "Tunguska," and "Terma" to "Memento Mori," "Max," "Small Potatoes," and "Gethsemane," these Season Four episodes are a must for every X-Files fan.』
『In season four,The X-Filescontinued to expand the breadth and complexity of the mythology established in the previous two seasons while developing a deeper, romantically ambiguous relationship between its photogenic leads, FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). New players such as United Nations official Marita Covarrubias and virus-carrying bees joined familiar faces like Cigarette Smoking Man, Alex Krycek, the blockheaded Alien Bounty Hunters, and the Consortium in the growing cast of a global struggle involving multiple factions of alien forces. It was a season in which Mulder and Scully seemed to lose ground to the global forces surrounding them, in which Mulder was infected with the black oil and Scully discovered she had cancer. With even the loyalties of Assistant Director Skinner and Mulder's mother in doubt, Mulder and Scully learned to trust only each other in their pursuit of the truth.

The show also continued to take breaks from the dizzying, heavy mythology to serve up standalone episodes with the show's unusual blend of sophisticated humor and creepy paranormal explorations. In "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man," the show parodied the scope of the public's conspiracy paranoia, implying that Cigarette Smoking Man was involved in everything from JFK's assassination to the Buffalo Bills' four straight losses in the Super Bowl. The three previous seasons had not exhausted the list of popular paranormal phenomena to tackle, and season four covered a wide range of topics from invisibility ("Unrequited"), past lives ("The Field Where I Died"), and inbreeding ("Home") to shape-shifting ("Small Potatoes") and golems ("Kaddish").The X-Filesproved, again, to be that rare science-fiction show that could both frighten and touch its audience, telling intelligent stories that resonated with the skeptic in each of us, all the while sprinkling in a few laughs.--Eugene Wei

(The dumbest movie I've ever seen)
『I felt like I was totally ripped off by all the hype. I'm guessing the movie marketing executives made this movie merely to prove that they could take the absolute worst stupid boring movie ever made and, if given enough money to spend on advertising, they could reap profits 100 times their marketing expenditures. This movie must have been some kind of test at how stupid the viewing public really is. This movie is not even worth your time watching it, never mind spending any money on it. It is the epitome of waste.』

(This was the first...)
『Please remember, you saw this movie just like the rest of the world. AND YOU WERE SCARED. Don't lie to yourself when looking at this movie. You saw it just like me and thought it was innovative and original. Don't care what anyone says this movie blew up over night and was the talk of the town. But for some reason after EVERYONE went and saw it, the haters came out and did what haters do---hate.

i bought this because this is the first in its creation. Hand-held movie with a low budget with actors not so much acting. The director gave them notes as to what was happening, but as for the screaming and the terror that the characters encounter are all true. The director and sent them in to the woods and scared the cr*p out of them to produce what i like to think of as a "true" scary movie.

Just remember this was the first of its kind...(present day follower: paranormal activity)

Just has 'saw' was the first to create the new genera of shock horror

Don't discount the originals』

(Very Interesting Concept)
『When I first saw this movie, I was one of those who thought it was real. I learned later that it wasn't. I think that is what made this movie. It was done in such a fashion that made you think you were really watching these people get lost in the woods and having these eerie things happening to them at night. We did not see any witches or creatures or anything of that nature, we just heard wierd noises and activity and in the morning something odd was the result, such as finding the piles of rocks surrounding the campsite that were not there the night before. Sometimes what you don't see can be scarier then what you do see. The acting was excellent, the characters were real and convincing. I felt the way the three dealt with each other and thier indivdual reactions to thier desperate situation seemed very geninue, like it could have happened that way. It was a very unique idea to do a film in this fashion.

I just have one problem with this movie. You would think that when they found the stream or river that they would just follow it out the of woods. They interviewed a man fishing at the beggining so you know that river would eventually lead the way home. Granted that could have been a different river but who cares. I would rather try that then walk through the woods with no sense of where I am headed, that compass was useless along with the map that one of the characters tossed. One might agrue, the "same log" theory in which they walked in one direction all day and ended up at the same point, as if the "mystical powers" of the woods and the "witch" were keeping them hostage and not allowing them to leave, and that following the river would not have mattered, and would explain why the map and compass were useless. In reality if I were lost in the woods and I found a river, I would follow it, and it seemed like a stupid move on thier part not to.』

(Woods can be creepy)
『Ahhh going all the way back to summer 1999 when this little gem was released, i was in high school, a bunch of my friends saw this. we were divided after the show, some did not like the whole documentary style look, the shaky camera use, some said it wasn't scary, some like me thought it was brilliant and scary, the old adage less is more... certainly worked in this case.

The movie isn't about the budget--- sure it was made on a small small budget and made a huge profit, what helped was that we as viewers were first introduced to an aggressive online ad campaign--- the film makers had the website, had the back story of the three lost film makers, the history of the Blair Witch, it was all very clever because I remember when clicking through the website I couldn't tell if this was real or not, or based on a true story then as word got around when this movie was getting popular it was all a clever rouse by the film makers themselves. Now you see these online viral ad campaigns everywhere, all in part have to thank the Blair Witch movie. remember 1999 was still new to online information, Yahoo was coming around and there was the big Website boom, look how far we come now with the Net.

And the whole documentary style film making is not new, the film makers have alot to owe to the Italian Cannibal movies Cannibal Holocaust for the inspiration, where that film an anthropologist finds lost footage of a trio of film makers that disappeared in the jungles of the Amazon. This film was made back in the early 80s. So this kind of style is not new.

The movie itself is shot in grainy black and white, and showing no gore no violence, everything is implied. At night in the woods all alone, your mind can take over, hearing every little twig break, every leaf rustle, will make your hairs stand on end. It's this simplicity that makes the film work. There's a scene where the three filmmakers are in the tent and they hear strange sounds coming from the woods and they shine a flash light out in the the black abyss and it doesn't penetrate nothing, the light, doesn't illuminate who or what is out there, total blackness is all around them and it's only then they feel most vulnerable, the filmmakers playing on everyone's general fear of the unknown, the darkness and one cannot anticipate early morning that much faster to make it safe again with the daylight. i want to say it's also a character driven movie, the interactions between the trio of documentary filmmakers and the stress they are put through as they get lost deeper and deeper into the Maryland wilderness. Everyone is on edge and on the brink of flipping out and going postal on each other, but throughout they try to stay calm and keep that inner beast inside them.

Let's fast forward to 2009, the new hit movie paranormal Activity, borrowing heavily from Blair witch, using less is more, this time in a house that has a demonic spirit

Anyways Blair Witch is a classic horror movie, our parents generation had the exorcist, Jaws, Psycho, Night of the Living dead, people who grew up in the 80s had Friday the 13th, Nightmare on elm street, The Thing, what do we got? Scream (crap), I know what you did last summer (definitely crap)
Blair witch is a rare gem for us who grew up in the 90s and got bombarded with crap movies like I mentioned, this one was a diamond in the ruff. I must say Where is the blu ray 10th anniversary edition?

(Scarey)
『It kept me on the edge of my seat. From the way it was filmed I thought it was real. Tension starts at the beginning and keeps building. Actors very realistic and well chosen. Good selection if you want to pump up your adrenalin.』
『THREE FILM STUDENTS SET OUT INTO THE BLACK HILLS FOREST TO MAKE A DOCUMENTARY ON THE LEGENDARY BLAIR WITCH. ARMED WITH A 16MM CAMERA, A HI8 VIDEO CAMERA, AND A DAT RECORDER, EVERY STEP, WORDAND SOUND IS CAPTURED. AFTER WANDERING AROUND BLACK HILLS FOREST, HEATHER, JOSH, AND MIKE ARE COLD, LOST AND HUNTED.』
The Blair Witch Project
Anyone who has even the slightest trouble with insomnia after seeing a horror movie should stay away fromThe Blair Witch Project--this film will creep under your skin and stay there for days. Credit for the effectiveness of this mock documentary goes to filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, who armed three actors (Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, and Josh Leonard) with video equipment, camping supplies, and rough plot outlines. They then let the trio loose into the Maryland woods to improvise and shoot the entire film themselves as the filmmakers attempted to scare the crap out of them. Gimmicky, yes, but it worked--to the wildly successful tune of $130 million at the box office upon its initial release (the budget was a mere $40,000).

For those of you who were under a rock when it first hit the theaters,The Blair Witch Projecttracks the doomed quest of three film students shooting a documentary on the Burkittsville, Maryland, legend of the Blair Witch. After filming some local yokels (and providing only scant background on the witch herself), the three, led by Heather (something of a witch herself), head into the woods for some on-location shooting. They're never seen again. What we see is a reconstruction of their "found" footage, edited to make a barely coherent narrative. After losing their way in the forest, whining soon gives way to real terror as the three find themselves stalked by unknown forces that leave piles of rocks outside their campsite and stick-figure art projects in the woods. (As Michael succinctly puts it, "No redneck is this clever!") The masterstroke of the film is that you never actuallyseewhat's menacing them; everything is implied, and there's no terror worse than that of the unknown. If you can wade through the tedious arguing--and the shaky, motion-sickness-inducing camerawork--you'll be rewarded with an oppressively sinister atmosphere and one of the most frightening denouements in horror-film history. Even after you take away the monstrous hype,The Blair Witch Projectremains a genuine, effective original.--Mark Englehart

Curse of the Blair Witch
Are you wondering just exactly who the Blair Witch was? What the Burkittsville, Maryland, legend was all about? Or what exactly fascinated student filmmaker Heather and what possibly took her, Mike, and Josh from this earth? Get all your background questions answered byCurse of the Blair Witch, a one-stop-shopping "documentary" originally produced for the Sci-Fi Channel as a tie-in marketing tool. Entirely fictionalized,Curse of the Blair Witchfocuses both on the past and the present, with copious info on the Blair Witch myth as well as on the disappearance of Heather, Josh, and Mike. As it turns out, the original witch was one Elly Kedward, who was accused in 1785 of taking blood from several children; she was subsequently banished to the harsh winter woods and left for dead. Her grisly and bloody legacy involves missing children, polluted water, disemboweled men, and a serial killer of children who claims to have been haunted by "an old woman ghost." Aside from some ineffective "newsreel" footage of the serial killer, all this intriguing information is presented convincingly and chillingly.Cursemay in fact freak you out more than the movie, and it evokes the great, pulpyIn Search Ofseries of the '70s, one of the prime inspirations for filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez. News clips of the search for Heather, Josh, and Mike lend a vérité atmosphere to the proceedings, but shed little light on their mysterious disappearance or their characters. Basically, it's a tease to go see the movie. Still,The Blair Witch Projectprovided only ever-so-slight information on the legend that haunted the forest, so you'll want this cleverly constructed mock documentary to supplement your knowledge of the film.--Mark Englehart

(What Lies Beneath)
『This is a good old-fashioned ghost story. You will jump several times and maybe even scream! Makes some popcorn, turn off the lights, and snuggle up for a great movie. This one's not a "hack-em up bloody" gruesome movie, its one suitable for the whole family (12 and up), or a good one for a "date night." Michelle Pheiffer and Harrison Ford at their best...』

(What Lies Beneath)
『It had been a year since Dr. Norman Spencer betrayed his beautiful wife Claire. But with Claire oblivious to the truth and the affair over, Norman's life and marriage seem perfect--so perfect that when Claire tells him of hearing mysterious voices and seeing a young woman's wraithlike image in their home, he dismisses her mounting terror as delusion. However, as Claire moves closer to the truth, it becomes clear that this apparition will not be dismissed, and has come back for Dr. Norman Spencer... and his beautiful wife. This movie is a jump-in-your-seat scary tightly wound psychological and supernatural mystery.

(Chiller)
『This movie still gives me the chills everytime I watch it. One of the greatest American ghost stories ever produced. This movie is comparable to Peter Straub's "Ghost Story". This movie will not bore you. Rent it today!』

(Two Stars Show How it is Done)
『Just a note to indicate that the years intervening since this film appeared have done nothing to dull the luster of this thriller nor of the two stars who, singly and together, pretty much hold the stage throughout the performance. Credit should be given to everyone concerned with the film but it is the actors we get to see. The transition from joy- to terror- filled days is done well while the twists and turns make dramatic logical sense. Recommended for anyone who takes pleasure in the suspenseful.』

(What Lies Beneath)
『Great movie..TRULY suspenseful until the end. I watch it over and over and it still scares me. Love the movie!!』
『In this exciting supernatural thriller, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer play a seemingly happily married couple who uncover a terrible secret…a secret so disturbing it threatens to destroy them.
When Claire Spencer begins seeing ghostly images and hearing mysterious voices in their home, her husband Norman suspects it’s just her imagination – until the images turn real. Now, together they must uncover the truth, confront their worst fears and find "what lies beneath"…with twisting and terrifying results.』

『A good old-fashioned thriller that wears its Alfred Hitchcock pedigree proudly on its sleeve,What Lies Beneathstars Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as picture-perfect married couple Norman and Claire Spencer, who seem happy and content with a fabulous house, college-age daughter and still-active libidos. When said daughter heads off to college, Claire starts obsessing about her new neighbors, and becomes convinced that the moody husband killed the neurotic wife, and that the wife's ghost has a desperately important message for her. Yes, it's true, there is a ghost, and there is a message, but it has decidedly more personal--and life-threatening--implications for Claire and Norman. Suddenly, that car crash last year that Claire can barely remember and the circumstances surrounding it start falling into place, and Claire begins to realize Norman may have a secret.

Director Robert Zemeckis loads the first half ofWhat Lies Beneathwith humorous cheap thrills (the suddenly ringing phone, etc.) that poke fun at Claire's dilemma while simultaneously making you tense beyond belief. Between each goofy thrill, though, is one true one that will make you jump out of your seat, including a bathtub that keeps filling itself. And all the while, Zemeckis subtly telegraphs the fissures in the Spencers' marriage, slowly revealing that all is not well between these two. Yes, it's a blatant Hitchcock homage to movies such asRear WindowandSuspicion, but it's sleekly made, entertaining and engrossing. Ford does his stoic thing well (and looks great doing it), and Diana Scarwid provides a refreshingly lighthearted turn as Claire's best pal, but it's pretty much Pfeiffer's movie all the way, and she carries the film on her not-so-fragile shoulders. And the third act is a suspense tour de force, complete with a breathtaking sequence featuring Pfeiffer and that menacing bathtub. In a time of obvious horror films,What Lies Beneathis an intelligent, fun thrill ride that will leave you breathless.--Mark Englehart

『7.9 THE FILM ITSELF
6.9 VISUALS
7.5 SOUND
7.0 PACKAGING
8.4 EXTRAS

Remembering that Final destination came out in 2000, it's easy to see how old the film looks - especially on blu-ray. But even more so, the dialogue, the some what hammy / cheesy acting and just how young the cast is makes you understand you are not watching an Oscar award winning film.

Final Destination is an above average thriller / horror flick that deals with a young man who has visions of death. When he escapes the "death" that was imminent, the count down is on until death "catches up" to those who escaped. It's an interesting premise and it's handled decently. But after 9 years, it's certainly not the most engaging of stories, it sometimes doesn't really hold your attention and the characters feel cookie-cutter at best. But if you're looking for something different and slightly entertaining, you can do a lot worse than Final Destination.

VISUALS 6.9
There's no reason this should be bought on blu-ray. It looks okay at best, but for visual nuts they will certainly call this "horrible". From the bad haircuts that are really shown well here to the blotchy skin / makeup, some movies just should be left on DVD. Of course, being 9 years old doesn't help, but I've seen movies had 20 years ago that look stunning compared to this. It seems like no remastering has been done here at all.

SOUND 7.5
It's good, but nothing special. And after listening to the entire "isolated score" feature, I'm even more less impressed with this than I originally was. The rest of the sound - dialogue and explosions - are better, but still, nothing that makes you crank up the surround sound or anything.

PACKAGING 7.0
No main menu, the movie just starts with a menu bar that pops up on the bottom. The cover kind of resembles a cheesy teen-horror / action flick, and that's exactly what the film is.

EXTRAS 8.4
Two commentary tracks, one of which is really good (the one with the crew) while the other is average at best (the one with some of the cast members). There is a feature that is commentary by the composer as the entire score is presented over the dialogue. I never listened to one of these before, and this was not a good first selection for a film to do so on. The score just isn't that interesting here and the dialogue is "blah" at best.

"The Perfect Souffle: Testing Final Destination" is an inyteretsing feature I have never seen again. The creators talk about what a testing piece does for the film and what changes after it. Kind of interesting, but glad more films don't have this as it won't be watched by many fans.

"Premonitions" is an obnoxiously cheesy piece about a woman who believes she has the power to see when people are dead or in danger, and that she can see the future. Maybe if she didn't try to force her kids to believe it (that's how it seems anyway) it wouldn't be so bad, but this just seems like a family that will be in the news one day for joining a cult or something.

Then there are 3 deleted scenes that show a radically different ending. These are good because it shows just how far off the ending was, but they're bad because this ending is a horrible decision. So I'm glad they changed it and this is a very interesting original ending.

FINAL VERDICT
Final Destination is a decent film that offers something new to a tired genre, but it certainly hasn't aged well in the 9 years since it was released. The special features are impressive, but aside from the crew commentary and the shocking alternate ending there isn't much substance here.

8.1/10 "IMPRESSIVE"』

(great horror that deserves the many positive ratings and reviews)
『The first Final Destination is actually a really good horror film. It's significantly better than the third Final Destination movie (that's the one with the carnival and roller-coaster ride segment, right? I like this one a LOT more).

The only flaw with this film is that the first 20 minutes start off rather predictable, but give the story some time to develop and I believe you'll find yourself really getting into it.

Maybe it's just me, but I found it kind of disrespectful that they'd keep playing John Denver's classic "Rocky Mountain High" throughout the film. The song plays whenever something bad is about to happen.

It's disrespectful because, as you probably know, John Denver lost his life in an airplane accident a few years before this movie was created and released. The writers should have honestly picked a different song.

Now about the storyline. Are you the kind of person that believes you can cheat death? If so, do you believe if you happen to cheat death that death will rear its head shortly after in ANOTHER attempt to take your life? These are the kind of serious and curious questions that many of us probably ask ourselves, and these same questions are the reason this kind of horror is a few steps above the generic slasher kind (and honestly, slasher flicks are the kind of horror stories have been done to the point of exhaustion by this point).

I often wonder about these questions personally, though obviously it's important not to let these questions interfere with enjoying your life. But it makes you wonder exactly what your destiny is and when it will happen, doesn't it?

Anyway, great horror suspense.』

(Extremely Underrated Sci-Fi Movie)
『Final Destination has an interesting concept. Death hunts people who overcame his plan for them. A script originally written for X-Files, it is intelligent, cerebral, and witty. It is not your average "kill-teens" flick. Each teen has their own personality and you can actually tell the difference between all of them. You sympathize with the teens and hope they don't die; instead of rooting for the killer (in this case Death itself). The teens have actual intelligence and are not idiots. The cliffhanger ending is truly excellent.
Among the Final Destination series, this is the best. Final Destination 2 (second best) suffered (in my opinion) from a relatively happy, hopeful ending compared to this cliffhanger ending; the new life concept seemed too hopeful. The Final Destination (third best) was relatively good but suffered from "show everybody die and not leave mystery" syndrome. Final Destination 3 suffered from stupid characters who no one cares about syndrome.』

(Useless, dumb POS movie)
『As they are, horror movies are for the most part useless and have no cultural value at all unless you're some kind of sadist. Final Destinations 1, 2 and 3 aren't so much horror as they are safety films that show what happen if you don't put safety first. People are decapitated, suffocated, immolated, defenestrated, and the only lesson we learn from this movie is... they shouldn't make a sequel... but they did anyway, 2 of them! Then they're making this new dumb Final Destination movie, with the word "The" in front of it as though they are trying to have more respect for the English language somehow by making the title a complete sentence on its own.

Don't watch Final Destination. You'll only destroy your mind and your dignity.』

(No Cheating The Reaper)
『The "Final Destination" series started off with this low-key and middle-budget suspense film. Cast with a bunch of young actors in a twist on the old slasher formula, except this time, the mad killer is old Grimm himself. It makes this movie a minor classic, in that there's never anyone chasing these kids through the woods (so to speak). You don't need to set up a story about the killer that got killed by the angry mob or tormented by nasty classmates. Death doesn't need that kind of contraption, Death just is.

Of the actors, only Sean William Scott (aka "Stifler") and Heroes' Ari Larter have moved up from this series starter. Then one of the kids - Devon Sawa - has a premonition that gets him and six classmates plus one teacher booted from the flight. Said plane then explodes upon take-off. This team of cast-offs realize they've cheated death...or did they? Seems Death's Design isn't to crazy about being disrupted, and comes back for the stragglers. This is where "Final Destination" slips back into formula, and became more inventive in the way the teens get killed off. This does sort of make FD a precursor to the Saw series, in that the kills had to be elaborately set up and executed (har har).

Even with the beach-blanket-bingo of the FD plotline, the suspense is real. Who goes next and who beats the reaper? The concept was so successful that the Big D came back for two more sets of teens (Final Destination 2 and Final Destination 3) with a 4th in the works with little variance in the formula.』

『After an eerie premonition leads a handful of passengers to disembark an ill-fated flight, Death with all its ingenious contraptions of doom at the ready stalks those survivors (Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith and more) one by one in the gory, gleeful shocker that launched the fright-filled film series. Final Destination: the start of it all!』
『While hardly a spiritual upgrade of the slasher film, this high-concept teen body-count thriller drops hints ofThe Sixth Senseinto the smart-aleck sensibility ofScream. Helmed byX-Filesveteran James Wong, who cowrote the screenplay with longtime creative partner Glen Morgan,Final Destinationis an often entertaining thriller marked by an unsettling sense of unease and scenes of eerie imagery. It suffers, however, from a schizophrenic tone and a frankly ludicrous premise. A high school Cassandra, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa ofIdle Hands), wakes from a preflight nightmare and panics when he's convinced the plane is doomed. His ruckus bumps seven passengers from the Paris-bound plane, which immediately explodes into a fireball on takeoff, but fate hasn't finished with these lucky few and, one by one, death claims them. Wong brings such a funereal tone to these early scenes of survivor's guilt and inevitable doom that the already far-fetched film threatens to veer into unplanned absurdity. Thankfully, the tale loosens up with a playful morgue humor: one of the victims winds up the splattered punch line to a grim joke and elaborate Rube Goldbergesque chains of cause and effect become inspired spectacles of destruction.Final Destinationis a pretty silly thriller when it takes itself seriously, and the filmmakers play fast and loose with their own rules of fate, but once they stick their tongues firmly in cheek, the film takes off with a screwy interpretation of the domino effect of doom.--Sean Axmaker

(Awful)
『Disclaimer: I did not watch this movie under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Bruce Campbell stars as an elderly Elvis Presley who teams up with an old black man who thinks he's JFK in order to stop an evil cowboy mummy from stealing the listless souls of their fellow nursing home residents.

It's fool-proof right? I mean, with a plot like this, the jokes and humor must have written themselves. They even got Bruce Campbell aboard! It would take some extraordinary skill to make a bad movie out of an idea as ripe with possibilities as this...Right?

Well they did. Incredible as it sounds, they actually managed to make an awful movie out of Elvis and JFK fighting a cowboy mummy. Why? They made the fatal mistake of playing it straight. What should have been a work of b-movie hilarity for the ages is actually a trite, insincere, and depressing commentary on aging. You popped in Bubba Ho-Tep to see the King duking it out with with an evil mummy? Well you'll be in for quite a let down when you realize 50 minutes of the movie is Elvis laying in bed wishing he had spent more time with his daughter. Sure there are a few jokes worth a chuckle here and there, but after the eleventh consecutive [...] joke, it begins to wear a little thin.

There are other reviewers that found this "hilarious"? Did these people even watch the movie? If Bubba Ho-Tep has any point, it's that people will mindlessly, and unconditionally worship anything Bruce Campbell puts his name on with a total disregard for the quality of the product. Skip this hopeless turd of a movie unless you're having a hard time getting to sleep.』

(stupid)
『please if your reading this don't waste your money are time on this movie it is one of the worst movies i have ever had to watch i thought it would be ok since there have been good reviews but oh my god whoever likes this movie must not be able to hear are see because this movie is terribly dumb&boring.』

(Hilarious)
『If you're a Bruce Campbell fan you'll love it. If you have a random/twisted/bazarre sense of humor, you'll love it. If you liked Full House, you'll hate it.』

(bubba-hotep)
『well this is a new twist on elvis presily and the mummy. i started watching this and it was weird to me but after a while it becomes good if you keep up with the story line and the actor of elvis does great job. it is a good four star.』

(Don't mess with Bubba!)
『What do you get when you combine a zombified undead Mummy, an aging and bitter Elvis (very much alive) and a conspiracy involving JFK (very much alive too), dyed black, missing a piece of his brain and living in a retirement home? Well, you get the very enjoyable and ultimately sentimental BUBBA HO-TEP! This is the type of film that will get labeled as a "B-Movie" no matter what (considering the movie premise, it's easy to see why people would think that), but it ends up being a lot more than just some cheesy film.

Directed by the amazing Don Coscarelli (the PHANTASM series and MASTERS OF HORROR), BUBBA HO-TEP is every thing you could hope for in a Coscarelli film and then some! At the time of the release of this film, a lot of Bruce Campbell fans were clamoring for another EVIL DEAD project. Sam Raimi was neck deep in the SPIDER MAN franchise and the only thing Bruce Campbell had done in the mean time was the corny but enjoyable made for TV movie THE MAN WITH THE SCREAMING BRAIN. Needless to say, at the time, there was a lot of anticipation for this film. BUBBA HO-TEP was turning into something only Horror fans would whisper about online and at conventions.

When BUBBA HO-TEP was finally released, it was met with mixed reviews by Horror fans and EVIL DEAD fans alike. The movie was a complete 180 as to what people had expected going into the film. The Bruce Campbell fans wanted to see more of an "Ash" like character and what they got was an old, mean, Elvis living in a retirement home. To further peoples disappointment in the film, BUBBA HO-TEP crawls along at a snail's pace. This just wasn't the movie the fans wanted or expected, which explains the mixed reviews on this site. It's a shame because this movie is actually pretty good too. As a Coscarelli movie, it's great! Remember folks, THE EVIL DEAD this is not.

If you watch the extras on the DVD, Bruce Campbell explains that part of the production problems came from the studio's reluctance to promote a movie about two old guys, fighting an even older Mummy! The studio just didn't think it had the kind of "zest" that seems to be the requirement for todays big budget films.

BUBBA HO-TEP is a simple story about Elvis and his friend JFK in a retirement home. Nobody there believes he's Elvis, they just think he's some old crack pot Elvis impersonator who hit his head a long time ago. The same problem seems to follow JFK, mainly because he's African American. JFK claims this is because the government dyed him black, removed a piece of his brain and dumped him in an old folks home. Even Elvis seems to think he's a little crazy!

Anyways, while these two characters are trying to get through their day, an undead Mummy seems to be stalking the halls at night, devouring old people's souls! This isn't your usual type of Mummy either! Bubba Ho-Tep is a cowboy hat wearing, boot stomping "good 'ol boy" type in terms of his appearance. For the most part he's a rotting corpse, so he has to eat the souls of weak old people in order to gain all of his strength back.

If all of this sounds like B-Movie Heaven, don't let the otherwise corny plot fool you! BUBBA HO-TEP is a more thoughtful and sentimental movie than most people might think. The pacing of the movie takes it's time, meaning there is a lot more character development than some people might care for. Those looking for the buckets of blood from THE EVIL DEAD or ARMY OF DARKNESS might find themselves slightly disappointed. Those who aren't expecting anything of the sort still might be turned off at the off beat plot, strange characters and depressing story. This movie is more of a mature look at the concept of aging, although done through the eyes of a B-Movie director. I think this movie will sit better with fans of Don Coscarelli's work and the PHANTASM series. Also, if you love Elvis, that helps too!

Over all, I thought this was a great movie! I'm a huge Coscarelli fan and I love all of the PHANTASM films, with the second being my favorite. Also, I love Bruce Campbell and all of the EVIL DEAD movies. In my opinion, this movie is the ultimate mix up. It's funny, it's dark, it's thoughtful and (above all) it's entertaining!

Gore Hounds, check it out, despite it's not very gory. That might have also been a problem for some of the Bruce Campbell fans going into this movie. Most would expect buckets of blood and gore (like in THE EVIL DEAD) considering his past films. That's not that case with BUBBA HO-TEP. However, the Mummy make-up is pretty good and there are some neat special effects in the same vein of the PHANTASM series. This movie is for those Horror fans who like a little more thought with their terror and more sentimentality with their characters. Enough said, it's a good movie. Check it out people.

Over and out!』

『Mud Creek, Texas, is about to get all shook up. When mysterious deaths plague the Shady Rest retirement home, it's up to an aging, cantankerous "Elvis" (Bruce Campbell) and a decrepitand black"JFK" (Ossie Davis) to defeat a 3,000-year-old-Egyptian mummy with a penchant for sucking human souls! Can the King show the world that he can still take care of business?』
『Don Coscarelli directs and Bruce Campbell stars as the King of Camp in this intentionally over-the-top schlockfest.Bubba Ho-Tepis partially about Elvis Presley and partially about the title character, an Egyptian cowboy zombie, but mostly it is about camp. The movie is equal parts story and back story. We learn through narration and flashback how Elvis didn't really die, ending up instead in a rest home in East Texas with JFK (played by Ossie Davis), who was dyed black and had his brain removed, presumably for reasons of national security. Campbell and Davis realize that something strange is going on when their rest-home compatriots start dropping off suspiciously. The whole movie leads up to a final showdown to the death with the Egyptian cowboy zombie who has been sucking the souls of their fellow residents because he thought no one would notice. The movie unfolds a bit slowly; it is, after all, a geriatrics-fight-Egyptian-cowboy-zombie movie. However, one wishes this self-conscious movie's pacing took its cue from the atypically fast-moving zombie instead of from the senior-citizen Elvis and JFK. In the end, though, Campbell is flawless as the aged King; his accent, intonations, glasses, and trademark karate are at the same time sincere and over the top.--Brian Saltzman

(ridiculous lol)
『mad funny haha if you like cartoons, violence, strippers, semi-porn, ridiculous out of the ordinary films this is a great one!』

(Big let-down)
『I've always loved Rob Zombie, so I had really high hopes for this movie. I'm a big fan of animation in general, and bizarre, nonsensical cartoons in particular, but this film just didn't do anything for me. Within the first five minutes I had lost all interest in watching any further; I forced myself to watch all the way to end anyway, anticipating something that would draw me into the story, but alas, it never came.

There were gratuitous amounts of violence&toon nudity, but it came from out of nowhere and didn't go anywhere. I didn't walk into this expecting Shakespeare or anything, but despite the appeal of wild themes like zombie Nazis&monster strip clubs, from start to finish the whole thing just felt stupid&pointless. A couple of jokes landed nicely, but 9 out of 10 were just plain lame (despite being punctuated with unnecessary boobs or decapitations).

Ultimately, I rented this movie for a dollar and still felt pretty ripped off.

On a final note, I have no idea where people are getting the idea that the animation was epic - I was pleasantly reminded of Ren&Stimpy cartoons, but it sure wasn't anything special.』

(almost every joke and style is derived from someone else's animation)
『I really looked forward to this. It was the first blu ray I ever owned. I had read the reviews and was looking forward to adding a cult classic in the making to my brand new blu ray collection.

The animation was limited, but decent enough to tell the jokes. the animators were very funny.

It was pretty weak from start to finish. It felt like every joke had been confiscated from some other better cartoon. I feel like it stole from Southpark, family guy, Venture Brothers, Futurama, Invader Zim, Looney Tunes, and Ren and Stimpy. But mostly Ren and Stimpy. For example, there were so many zoom in shots where the simple line drawing became a detailed rendering of something disgusting. Very Kricfalusi. There was even the fog horn sound effect in these shots. What also felt like john kricfalusi was the female sex kittens in the show, but they weren't drawn as well. I kept waiting to see some special thanks to John K. maybe I missed it. I was anxious to remove it from my player.

Imagine if Rob Zombie got high with Quintin Tarantino in the editing room of Inglorious Basterds, went home watched Ren and Stimpy the Lost Episodes snorted 15 lines of "It's okay to tweak the joke if it's homage" then wrote this in 2 binge drunk days.

maybe rent but don't buy.

(Two wolf nazi zombie thumbs up.)
『I had a blast watching this movie. Great songs, over the top vulgarity. very funny.』

(I enjoyed it, however)
『It tends to drag with some of the musical numbers. That's really my only complaint with the movie. Otherwise it was very entertaining.』

『This is a very good movie from beginning to end and follows the book unlike the original 1980 movie.
You get commentaries and extra scenes.
The cast are very good.Of course how can anyone replace Jack Nickelson. But the actor here who does gives a gentle performance that makes the horror that follows scary. If you love the book and the 1980 movie you'll love this remake.
At this low price you have nothing to lose.』

(Great movie)
『Had heard about this made for TV movie while visiting the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.
This is much closer to story line from book than movie was.

『Want a good scare for you and your TRICK, well this is a Halloween TREAT』

『We purchased it because we love the Stanley Hotel. This is the movie that was filmed in the hotel. Contrary to what many people know the first movie was not filmed at the Stanley in Colorado. This is the one. Good souvenir. Movie is ok』

(Don't waste your time)
『I had high expectations of this miniseries, given it's creation under the auspices and consultancy of Mr. King himself. It turned out to be a drawn out melodrama, full of gimmickry and with very little of the artistic panache of the original movie. The hotel itself was attractive enough, but from there on, it went downhill. Neither the malevolent, carnivorous topiaries in the garden, nor the two lame ghost plot participants did much to create a haunted atmosphere in the hotel. The hotel's creaks and groans and auto-swinging doors were trite and none of the characters were truly convincing. Rebecca de Mornay as Wendy is alright, Jack Torrance, played here by Steven Weber is an annoying exercise in waffling, being an aggressive boozer one minute, and a pathetic whimperer the next. He never seems to be able to make up his mind who he is or what he wants, an irritatingly disjointed character who himself seems to have no idea where he is going. Consequently, the whole thing is ultimately a three hour bore. While the original movie may have had it's shortcomings in its abrupt structure of the progression of the story, it was nevertheless far more convincing than this mushy rendition which seemed to be nothing more than the product of the mercantile minds at Warner Brothers, doing their level best to wrest additional revenue from a classic story.』
『Jack Torrance and his family move into the sprawling, vacant Overlook Hotel to get away from it all. Away from the alcoholism that derails Jack's writing career. Away from the violent outbursts that mar Jack's past. But Jack's young son Danny knows better. He possesses a psychic gift called the shining. - a gift the hotel's vile spirits desperately want.

Stephen King's The Shiningis a new adaptation from the author himself, made for television, that bears very little resemblance to the 1980 Stanley Kubrick version. That's not surprising since Kubrick threw out most of King's novel and presented his own version of the story. Here King redresses the balance in a miniseries that follows his original almost to the letter, and manages to be effectively creepy despite the budget and censorship limitations of the TV format.

Stephen Weber takes over the role of Jack Torrance, the caretaker who slowly descends into madness in the haunted Overlook Hotel. His performance is as far from Jack Nicholson as you could get, with his insanity building slowly and menacingly rather than being virtually mad from the get-go. Rebecca De Mornay is superb as Wendy Torrance, struggling to hold her fragile family together amid the spooky goings-on. Young Courtland Mead plays Danny, whose unique gifts give the story its title, as one of those infuriating TV brats who overacts left, right, and center. Fortunately, there are enough creepy moments and a number of frights to hold the whole thing together, the woman-in-the-bathtub scene being a standout shocker. Sure, there is nothing quite like Nicholson's "Here's Johnny!" moment, but this is the story King wanted to tell and it still shines brighter than most of the other recent screen adaptations of his work.--Jonathan Weir
