Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The Snowman Cometh) 『Expecting an animation treat, it's still a bit unusual that the first scene in "The Snowman" isn't a cartoon, but a live shot of a barren landscape. A faceless man with his back to the camera walks into view, and as he recedes into the distance beneath the bare, gnarled trees that resemble whipped hydras, he narrates in a slow downhearted voice that shockingly become the last words ever to be spoken throughout the scant 26 minutes of this animation masterpiece. On his closing words the glum terrain transforms into a wonderland of soft pastel stroke animation, a piano begins to twinkle sadly and the stage is set for a storytelling with no character names or dialogue.
Originally debuting in 1982 on the BBC Channel in London, "The Snowman" was adapted by Raymond Briggs' children's book of the same name. Later as a DVD, all of the magic is still intact as we witness the playful adventures of a boy and his new snowman friend. Insofar as a plot, the previous sentence pretty much says it all. In the middle of the night, the boy's Snowman creation magically comes to life and they begin to play and explore in and around the house that's nestled in a snowy English village.
"The Snowman" is one of my perennial Christmas favorites because it is a feat in simplicity. Whether the boy and snowman are dancing, playing dress-up or riding a motorbike, its innocent charms could easily threaten diabetic shock. But there's no manipulation here, no hidden agenda. The Snowman's heart and artistry lie in the confluence of its technical aspects to form a simple, quiet, yet resonant story. There's the use of crosshatched pastel colors that reveal a coloring book come to life. Snow and icy tundra have never been rendered so warmly, resembling more like puffs of wool. Faces are rosy cheeked, ambient lighting is glowing but never harsh, and fires seem to exist only to warm and toast, but never burn.
Since there's no dialogue, the music propels the narrative. Stark and whimsical as the story itself, the score hypnotizes as it bobs and weaves through each of their adventures. The musical accompaniment accentuates without over dramatizing, and beautifully complements the supple crayon-etching look. Never is this more apparent than the enchanting sequence where the Snowman and boy fly off to the North Pole. Accompanied by an airy solo from The Scottish Boy's Choir, the scene becomes a wondrous and ethereal journey. Like an aging leaf, you won't notice how subtly your mouth will curl into a little smile when you watch this sequence - trust me.
While The Snowman is ideal for children of all ages, make no mistake that adults will be moved by it too. The story is a heartwarming setup that leads to an emotional wallop of an ending. No doubt a blindside, it leaves its indelible message without treacle, yet still on a child's terms. Without giving too much away, it's a heartbreaking metaphor for the exact moment in our young lives when we lose our first bit of innocence and unknowingly head toward adulthood. To this day, it still stands as the most moving thing I've ever seen on TV or film.』
(A must for everyone.) 『The Snowman is easily one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, movie, cartoon, or otherwise. I am not one to over dramatize; The Snowman touches a place in my heart that nothing else ever has. The film brings me to tears every time I watch it. Its innocence, fun, beauty, artistry, and grace are timeless. When I first saw it, I was in 2nd grade during the holiday season, and I was floored. Even then, I was reduced to tears during the "Walking in the Air" scenes. This sounds silly, but even now, I remember sitting in the classroom, tears rolling down my face, thinking: "This is so beautiful." I am getting choked up now just writing about it.
A very moving, powerful piece, I suggest that everyone (not just those with children) view The Snowman at least once in their lifetime.』
(You don't need a 'White Christmas' to LOVE "The Snowman") 『Unlike many of the reviewers here,"The Snowman" was NOT part of my local TV seasonal line-up during my youth, nor did I see it as a child.I'm an Australian of early middle age who has never even SEEN snow. In 1992,I was a twenty-something aspirational filmmaker who only saw the film's flying sequence as part of an animation theory class at art college. But the feelings I experienced during those few minutes were so intense&complex,&the images I saw so achingly beautiful, for years I wanted to track down a copy of the whole film.Even my comic-mad younger classmate, rather more cynical&worldly than I was,who never used superlatives about ANYTHING said simply,"It's so beautiful it makes me want to cry." Indeed. Well, last year, thanks to the wonderful twin technologies of DVD&internet,I finally ordered a copy.Well,it did not disappoint.Being some 15 or so years older, the joys it celebrates are even sweeter and more painful.(no,that isn't a contradiction.)Childhood's idealism sometimes seems farther away than ever. But for 30 minutes, you CAN go back in time. Like most good art,it's based on a deceptively simple premise:little boy builds snowman.Snowman comes alive. They Have An Adventure. The rest,as they say,is magic. The animation is flowing&lyrical, and as someone trained in animation myself I can only marvel at the many months of toil it must have taken to produce the sensitive, softly rendered drawings in coloured pencil. This is pre-computer animation,folks-all of those drawings were done by hand, and they're absolutely faithful to the source material.(Raymond Briggs' original picture book, which is a delight in itself.)When somebody argues that the time-consuming nature of animation dictates that a simplified character design is a necessity even when based on a well-known literary character(And yes,Yoram Gross,I AM looking at you&what you did to poor Blinky Bill),show 'em this film as a response. A review of this film would be remiss without mentioning the extraordinary music, which is absolutely integral to the magic it weaves. You can HEAR the whale's tail slap the sea in the percussion,FEEL the chilly air in the young boy's falsetto,SEE the reaction of an overanxious house cat.(FWIW,there is a wonderful audio version of the story narrated by Stephen Fry,who uses the same music in this very manner to paint a vivid aural picture of the scene) Howard Blake's soundtrack is haunting&full of emotion, yet never corny or sloppily sentimental.Peter Auty, who sings the memorable "Walking In the Air"( often erroneously attributed to Aled Jones, who, had the hit single) must be given full credit for the sense of nostalgia&longing that his perfect soprano voice provides. And yes,the scene where after the Snowman repays his young host's hospitality by grabbing his hand and flying to the North Pole (for a Snowman party,no less!) still makes me quietly weep like a tap.(At my age I can blame it on peri-menopause,so getting older has its perks.).Maybe it's the amazingly beautiful little set pieces in it-the dazzling northern lights, the majestic sweep of the whale's tail, the way the ground revolves as if in a dream,it's hard to say.Perhaps it's a return to a time when you believed anything was possible if you believed earnestly enough:I don't know.I try not to analyze it too much. But if you can watch it without turning into a puddle, you're either made of tougher stuff than I am or a card-carrying member of The Heartless Bastard Club.(Take your pick.) For a few minutes, all the cynicism borne of the hard knocks of adulthood dissipates, and the world is a wonderful place full of magical potential. And you realise:you never REALLY forsook that idealism of youth. You merely forced yourself to forget to function in the 'sensible' real world. And when you realise it has never really left you,you cry. Not that the film is maudlin. There are plenty of giggles to be had, whether it be the little boy's bare bum as he hurriedly changes into outdoor clothes,or the Benetton ad-like Snowman party, where large white fellows dance the jig in every national costume from the kilt&sporran&African fez to an Australian bush hat.(Well,my sister built a snowman in the Victorian snowfields once, maybe it's him!) :-).Even Santa makes an appearance. And it all warms the spirit without being trite.(After watching this film you'll NEVER be able to stomach that crappy stop-motion 'Rudolph' film from 500000000 B.C. again) Another reviewer expressed consternation about the suitability of the ending for young souls(he melts) but having seen my sensitive 3 yr old niece cope quite well with it("Where he go,Aunty Sette?"),I think it's a wonderful introduction to the themes of transcience&loss.Besides which, this is a film for families to watch together.Anyhoo,we don't REALLY know if he melted,do we?You can always tell your little 'un he went back to the Snowman party if their screams threaten to make your Xmas pud stick in your chest. Joking aside, this is a wonderful film that celebrates innocence, friendship, laughter&the joys of childhood. It also could be seen as a reminder to express our affection for loved ones before they are gone&to enjoy transient happinesses without judgement.Or,it can be seen as a marvellous fantasy kids of all sizes can enjoy. I have talked to people from many works of life, who live in varying climes, and have yet to find someone who didn't find some real value in it.(Does the lady who bought the book&griped about the ending count?)Anyhow, add it to your holiday viewing list this year&you'll have a lovely seasonal memory to cherish. Heck, watch it any time of the year.Such a tribute to Idealism,Kindness&The Imagination should NEVER be out of season.』
(The Snowman) 『This is by far my favorite holiday movie. It is pleasing to children as well as adults.』
(Simply wonderful!) 『I am from the UK and this is played every year on TV. It is a wonderful story and all the animation is set to music. The music tells the story. I purchased this, so that my children can see the wonder I had for many years. They absolutley love it!! My 3 year old thinks this is wonderful and thinks Frosty the Snowman is a little scary. 』 『Wordless (excluding the song "Walking in the Air") animated adventure about a young English boy who makes a snowman one Christmas Eve, only for it to come to life that night and take him on a magical adventure to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus.』 『This charming British animated short film (it's just 23 minutes long) is a 1982 production of London's Channel 4, based on the classic children's book by Raymond Briggs and crafted with a colored-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn illustrations. Small children should be entranced by the story of a small boy in rural England whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequence based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do English country dances. This is one of the very few Christmas tapes on the market that really deserves to be a holiday perennial, a gentle fable of friendship and the power of imagination.--David Chute』

This movie was amazingly good, its one of those movies I can watch over and over again without getting sick. Jim Carrey is very talented and this movie showed. I was very disappointed about "The Cat in the Hat" that was absolute garbage, but this movie sends a message to people "never treat people badly, because one day they may change!"』
(Like this Christmas movie.) 『 Jim Carrey shure is a funny guy! But I've seen him do better in other movies. CHRISTMAS 2009 is around the corner so pick up The Grinch on HD DVD or DVD today.』
(Jim Carrey is really the GRINCH!!) 『This movie was wonderful adn Jim Carrey played the part EXCELLENT!!! My children loved it and I watched it with them. I totally reccommend this movie to anyone of all ages. Enjoy, because we did!!』
(Kids love this movie) 『I purchased this movie because I had seen it before but was unable to find it in the stores as they have it classified as a "Christmas movie" meaning they only sell it during the Christmas season. I remembered to check it out on Amazon as it came on while I was on the website and my 2 year old was transfixed by it. My whole family loves this movie and it is appropriate for most ages.』

Thank You Amazon.com』 『Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/22/2006 Run time: 105 minutes Rating: Pg』 『Under a thick carpet of green-dyed yak fur and wonderfully expressive Rick Baker makeup, Jim Carrey is up to all of his old tricks (and some nifty new ones) in this live-action movie of Dr. Seuss's holiday classic. He commands the title role with equal parts madness, mayhem, pathos, and improvisational genius, channeling Grinchness through his own screen persona so smoothly that fans of both Carrey and Dr. Seuss will be thoroughly satisfied. Adding to the fun is a perfectly pitched back-story sequence (accompanied by Anthony Hopkins's narration) that explains how the Grinch came to hate Christmas, with a heart "two sizes too small." Ron Howard proves a fine choice for the director's chair with a keen balance of comedy, sentiment, and light-hearted Seussian whimsy. Production designer Michael Corenblith gloriously realizes the wackiness of Whoville architecture, and his rendition of the Grinch's Mt. Crumpit lair is a marvel of cartoonish, subterranean grime. Then there's Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), the thoughtful imp who rallies her village to recapture the pure spirit of Christmas and melts the gift-stealing Grinch's cold, cold heart. You've even got a dog (the Grinch's good-natured mongrel, Max) who's been perfectly cast, so what's not to like about this dazzling yuletide movie? The production gets a bit overwhelmed by its own ambition, and the citizens of Whoville (including Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, and Bill Irwin) pale in comparison to Carrey's inspired lunacy, but who cares? If a movie can unleash Jim Carrey at his finest, revamp the Grinch story, and still pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Seuss, you can bet it qualifies as rousing entertainment. Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The original has held up well over time) 『My daughter and I just did a GHOST BUSTERS double bill in honor of her upcoming move to New York, where she will be working at Columbia University, which is where Bill Murray and his paranomal colleague are studying at the beginning of the first film. We both really enjoyed the original and felt that it had more than held up over time, but we we were tremendously disappointed with the sequel. This is a joint review of both films. We watched the original film on Blu-ray and the second one on regular DVD. I won't say much more about the format except to say that the quality of the Blu-ray was somewhat disappointing. In fact, the quality of the DVD was very nearly as good as the Blu-ray.
Rewatching the first film, it was fascinating to see what a simple story it told, and how short it was. There really is very little to the film apart from the simple story and a string of scenes the become a framework for a series of jokes. The one thing that surprised me was that I don't find Bill Murray's jokes, many of which feel ad libbed, as funny as I did when I saw it when it first came out. This is balanced by Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd being funnier than I remembered. The special effects all look pretty good by today's standards, except for Slimer, who didn't much appeal to me when the film came out and still doesn't. But the highpoint of the movie, then as now, is the Stay-Puft marshmallow man, which is definitely one of the greatest movie monsters ever.
I saw the sequel when it came out, but over the years found it odd that I couldn't remember anything about it. I remembered that Sigourney Weaver's character had a baby, but that was the extent of it. Rewatching the film it is easy to see why I couldn't remember anything about it: it is simply not a very memorable film. The pace and the rhythm are erratic and many of the jokes are simply unfunny. The plot isn't very interesting and seems pretty formulaic, the formula being the first movie. It was, in fact, almost a remake of the original with some names changed and situations altered. Both my daughter and I were very unhappy with it and did not think it a very worthy sequel to the first film.
The original 1984 GHOSTBUSTERS still plays like a film that was the product of some imaginations in the grip of a real vision, while the sequel feels like a film made to cash in on the success of the former. It isn't like they weren't trying, they simply weren't inspired. GHOSTBUSTERS 2 just is not a worthy sequel of one of the more memorable light comedies of the eighties. Speaking for the two of us, we definitely enjoyed the first movie, but wish we had passed on the second one. I just hope that I remember the latter as poorly as I did the first time.』
(GHOSTBUSTERS) 『The product arrived exactly as they sated the product would be and in shorter time than projected.』
(Agree - Transfer was awful!) 『I completely agree with the rest of the one-star reviewers. My blu-ray collection is up to about 100 discs, and this one is one of the bottom 3 in terms of most atrocious transfer to blu ray. The graininess is annoying almost all the way through, but the place in the movie where it's the worst is in the library scenes, whenever there is wood work in the backdrop. Eventhough the price is right for this blu-ray, save your pennies. Transfers of other classics from the 70's/80's (2001, Omega Man, Trading Places, Towering Inferno, etc.) are WAY better.』
(Ghostbusters BR HD, a perfect combination!) 『First keep in mind how old this film is and the style of movie they were making at the time. There is "some" noticeable grain in the movie but it's meant to be there, without it the movie would just loose a lot of it's original feel or place in it's era of movies. That said, Ghostbusters on blu ray is just the best transfer this film has seen to date. No, this won't be one I'll use to show off my setup or as a demo but it still looks far better the any of the previous releases. My kids had not seen this movie yet so this gave us a perfect chance to sit down and watch it with them. Sounds great through surround sound, if you loved the film then.....no reason why you won't fall for it again.』
(I Ain't 'Fraid a' No Ghosts!) 『One of the best ghost comedies of that decade, written by SNL funny man Dan Aykroyd and Harold Raymous, directed by Ivan Reitman.
Three parapsychology professors get kicked out of a university just when they have made a great discovery of capturing ectoplasmic goo and whatever goes with it. They decide to get a business going, called it Ghostbusters and prowl the streets of New York with a funky hearse with the license plate Ecto-1!
Bill Murray steals the show with his wit and dry humor. Sigourney Weaver flashes leg and blows her hair out -- "That's a different look."
An ancient Mesopotamian god takes over a skyscraper and with power wants to destroy New York and whatever else gets in her way. Her destroyer: The StayPuft Marshmallow Man! Murray quips, "Hey, he's just a sailor visiting New York!"
Sly commentary on government interference, bumbling cops and how the media can make anything popular just by putting their mark on it creating fake celebrity. Or, maybe it's just a fun movie.
Highly recommended.』 『Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 06/16/2009 Run time: 105 minutes Rating: Pg』 『Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such asMen in Black.--Tom Keogh』

It encouraged us to buy old Dr. Who shows when Sarah was a young associate for two Doctors. Now this series is out and we waited eagerly after the first one. If anything, this season of The Sarah Jane Adventures is better than the first and is great. It has us on Amazon getting the BBC radio shows and books. We love her.』
(Pretty decent Dr. Who spin-off, Season Two) 『Yes, it's intended to be a lot more kid-friendly than Dr. Who or, especially, Torchwood. Putting aside the children-friendliness of the show, it's got some good science fiction action and the idea content is higher than television average. With a good price, I'd recommend this to anyone, though some familiarity with the Dr. Who shows might help with context.
The Last Sontaran: This is a direct continuation of the 10th Doctor's episodes Poison Sky&Sontaran Stratagem. It's loaded with science fiction movie references (Star Wars, Predator, etc.) and the 1st episode action is pretty good. There are some logical gaps that grate, but it's pretty well done.
The Day of the Clown: Good creepy show introducing some new characters. The Pied Piper features... Some filler, but mostly good.
Secrets of the Stars: Astrology, possession, Ancient Ones, and a Chosen One. But nowhere near as bad as that makes it sound! Still, my least favorite of the season.
The Mark of the Berserker: Sarah Jane doesn't feature prominently in this episode, rather it's like the Dr. Who&Torchwood episodes that focus instead on others having a singular experience with the unknown and alien. Rather well done tale of an alien pendant and family relationships.
The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith: Time Travel, the Trickster, and a Trap. A well-worn science fiction cliche of changing the past to horrible effect in the present, but nicely executed. More would be telling too much...
Enemy of the Bane: UNIT, the Brigadier, immortal aliens, Mrs. Wormwood ("Luke, I am your mother."), and the Bane attempt to take over the world again. Might be a bit too much packed in here, but, once again, pretty well done.
This isn't the greatest science fiction television of all times, but it's fun, smart, and very human.』
(The Sarah Jane Adventures: Series Two) 『This series of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" is even better then the first. It's more emotional, the stories are filled with more exciting aliens, and new characters.

『The charmingSarah Jane Adventurescontinues to provide fun and entertaining children's television while remaining true to its roots in the venerable British science-fiction seriesDoctor Who. Elisabeth Sladen, who remains among the Doctor's best-loved companions (she accompanied Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker on their interstellar jaunts from 1973 to 1976), is again front and center for this program, which takes place entirely on Earth. That doesn't mean it's safe from alien invasions, as the 2008 second season illustrates: menaces from Sarah Jane's past (a warlike Sontaran, whom she first encountered in the 1973Doctor Whoserial "The Time Warrior," is on the loose in "The Last Sontaran") as well as newer foes (the Lovecraftian Bane return in "Enemy of the Bane," along with a nice supporting turn by Nicholas Courtney, who reprises his Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart) present challenges to the intrepid journalist and her teenage companions. The six two-part episodes that comprise season 2 deliver both the breezy cheek and the imaginative sci-fi that producer Russell T. Davies has brought to the revampedDoctorand its more grownup spinoff,Torchwood, and if the plots and action here are somewhat milder than those of the Doctor or Captain Jack Harkness, fans of both should be pleased that they can get an equal level of enjoyment from a show that they can also watch with younger viewers.
The three-disc set has an agreeable amount of extras, though many, like episode synopses for both seasons and character profiles, are text-based and therefore a bit underwhelming. More interesting are interviews with the cast and behind-the-scenes footage, most taken from UK kids' series likeBlue Peter. There's also an enjoyable quiz section that yields an amusing comic clip.--Paul Gaita』

On a separate note, I purchased this directly from Amazon and the DVD case was broken on the inside when I got it so the DVD was loose and had a bunch of scratches on it :( Could have been poor handling by the mail service though, I don't know. (Bring me the head of Richard Donner!) 『I know Superman geeks hold Richard Donner in esteem over this tepid "adaptation". Too bad Sam Peckinpah turned this sucker down. I know many people have found it hard to imagine what Sam would have done with this. Let me try: It would take place in El Paso with Clark Kent being some guy on the lam for years. In Peckinpah's "Superman", Kent would not have supernatural powers, only a lot of guns and would be drunk a lot. In flashbacks we learn that in high school he was some put-upon Dustin Hoffman "Straw Dogs" type, who finally goes off the deep end when the bullies who've been giving him hell gang rape his girlfriend Lana Lang. Of course, Lang is shown as sort of enjoying her debasement. He massacres all the bullies and becomes a hit man. On the lam, he meets with a hooker named Lois Lane who's on the run from her sadistic pimp, Lex Luther. There are various hijinks along the way involving bikers, tequila, more gang-rapes, more tequilla, and Kent/Superman killing more of Luther's henchmen. Kent/Superman would be played by Kris Kristofferson or Tommy Lee Jones. Luther would be played by Ernest Borgnine. Luther's henchman Otis would be played by Warren Oates or Alphonso Arau. Lois Lane would be played by either Susan George or even better, Pam Grier. The film would end with another massacre and some depressing 70s era ballad over the end credits (Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" or something similar).』
(And the saga begins with Superman The Movie) 『5 of 5 stars for the comic book based movie Superman The Movie. This movie starts the franchise with the destruction of Krypton following sending of its last survivor to Earth. From the landing of his ice craft in the fields to his experiences in high school to his moving to Metropolis and working at the Daily Planet, this movies sets the basic history and story of Superman. An all star cast includes: Reeve, Hackman, Brando, Ford, Perine and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. This movie has the sequence with Lane in a long gown going flying with Superman. Once Superman is established as a character, we enter the meat of the movie where Superman fights against Lex Luther (Hackman). Helped by Perine&Beatty's characters, Luther learns to use Kryptonite to neutralize Superman. Then he steals a nuke for purposes of setting off a major Earthquake on the west coast to move "ocean-front property" to the east.
A grand movie with sweeping music and visuals, this is a really fun movie and worth watching several times!』
(Awful, hackneyed, insulting to its audience) 『I am simply astounded by the popularity of this terrible film. One would imagine that one of the most popular superhero films ever made would at least be entertaining in a base kind of way, but this film fails in nearly every way. The script is the worst I have ever seen. The Superman universe's fictional laws are constantly contradicted and broken when it fits the director's whim.
The dialogue and acting are atrocious. All of the actors (and it stars people like Reeves and Hackman, who are both very good actors) portray their roles with a kind of smirky self-consciousness, as if to underscore the ridiculousness of the production. The dialogue is an endless stream of boorish cliches, from start to finish. This particular quality (the low quality of the dialogue) is overpowering in two sequences: the opening scene on Krypton, and the the bit which was probably intended as romantic where Superman and Lois Lane go flying around the city. The latter is worse. Lane's voiceover seems like a distillation of the worst elements of dialogue in Harlequin romances, purified to their rotten, insipid core. Dialogue this bad shouldn't exist.
The film is unaware of whether it wants to be good campy fun or a serious work of cinema. It tries to be both, and fails to be either. The campy plot, dialogue, and acting serve to undermine the seriousness inherent in several of the film's attempts at poignancy. And, likewise, the seriousness undermines the film's campiness.
This is the worst kind of film: that which requires its characters to act stupid or incomprehensible in order to drive the drama. It goes all out. Characters act randomly, with no explanation as to why they are doing what they are doing.. Villains talk about how Superman cannot be harmed by bullets or fire... and then proceed to attack him with bullets and fire. Luthor (who boasts about having an IQ of 200) describes his plot in great detail to Superman, and then leaves him in the same room as a woman who has just expressed horror at his (Luthor's) plans. Clark Kent states that he must leave the home of his mother, without ever expressing why he must to the audience: we (and his mother, evidently) are expected to infer this information.
What makes this film so offensive, however, isn't the poor acting, dialogue, characters, or plot (this is, after all, a SUPERMAN movie - you can only go so far with the material), but the fact that the script disregards basic rules of narrative construction, contradicting logic and this world's fictional rules when it sees fit to do so. At one moment, Superman must change in a phone booth in order to rescue Lois Lane. During another, he can magically change what he is wearing in order to address a threat by Luthor. Moreover, Superman can not only reverse time by spinning the Earth backward on its axis (a dubious notion to begin with), but can select which aspects of the past he'd like to change.
This film was primarily a spectacle of Special Effects when it was released. It has suffered the fate all such films must: its techniques are now exceedingly phony looking, and when the graphical prettiness is no longer an element, the film collapses.
I am neither given to misanthropy nor to elitism, but I must question the collective sanity of the people of this world when such a lazy film as this is so widely loved to this day.』
(Great superhero flick looks as good as it likely can on Blu-Ray) 『The movie:
"You'll believe a man can fly." That was the advertising tagline. Well, I can't think of many instances of it, but this was one time when a movie delivered on its hype. "Superman" fires on many cylinders, but the main one, the integral one, was believability. This film is an absolute achievement in terms of tone, style, and effects. For 1978, the effects are terrific, but also the performances and the writing really gel and sell the concept to the audience.
We haven't seen yet the actor who can top Christopher Reeve's Superman. The solidness, the goodness radiating from his presence in costume, combined with the vulnerability and sheer hilarity of his Clark Kent are (perhaps) impossible to top. Margot Kidder turns in a feisty Lois Lane, and their chemistry is great. Gene Hackman is a credible Lex Luthor, both funny and menacing at the same time. Supporting players fill out a cast that just really inhabits the world and never feels less than real.
The run time of the movie is perhaps a bit flabby, and this edition adds about 3 minute of new material. But I for one am quick to forgive it - it just so captures a feeling of innocence, wonder, Americana, that I'm willing to just bask in it, even when the action slows down.
The Blu-Ray:
Well, this is not one of the discs you'll pop in to show off "how great HD looks." The film was shot almost throughout with soft focus filters which bump up the haze of lighting and obscure detail.
BUT: It looks as good as it probably ever can and ever will. In A-B comparisons with the previous DVD (which was great for its day) the upgrade is subtle but evident. Some shots show very strong detail, when it's in focus. Check out the foliage in Lois' rooftop apartment. Some facial shots show exceptional detail in fine lines. Whenever the soft filter is absent, you can really tell you're watching an HD presentation. The colors are the main upgrade in the Blu-Ray - reds and blues really pop, and black levels are rock solid in most shots not involving visual effects. Film grain is present and generally not too obtrusive, except during some effects shots. But I prefer its presence to excessive digital noise reduction. In the end, how you feel about this Blu-Ray will depend on your emotions for the film itself (mine are very strongly positive), and how you feel about a home video accurately replicating the look and feel of the original presentation's film stock (something I'm also strongly in favor of).
Audio is presented in a strong Dolby Digital 5.1 channel mix. There isn't much of a workout for the surrounds, but John Williams' iconic score really sings, nonetheless.
Extras include an hour's worth of documentaries, reprises from the DVD edition. Casting tests, trailers, a commentary by Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz, and a wonderful score only track highlighting the music, round out the disc. Overall, at least average and probably slightly above average.
**********
I grew up with this film. I'm predisposed to enjoying it. As a Blu-Ray, it is hampered by the stylistic choices of the filmmakers, but still gives us a very good presentation of the film.
It's a five star film in my book. It's certainly in the top 5 comic book movies ever made (and was the true pioneer in terms of big budget successes from comic book material.) I considered downgrading this disc by one star simply because it can't overcome the flaws inherent to the source material. For the paltry sum Amazon is asking for it, you really can't go wrong, though. Kids of all ages (ages 3 to 83?) who just want to feel good about the world will be transported to a better, simpler, more beautiful place. Fans of 1970's cinema will find a lot to love, as well. There are many shots which really shine in detail, and almost all of the shots benefit from zippier colors. If you don't own this film otherwise, or are just a fan of the action/comic book genre, this is a must-buy. It's a classic.』 『A new, updated version of the popular comic book hero "Superman." The story begins with Superman's birth on the doomed planet Krypton and follows him on his arrival to Earth, his childhood in Kansas and his career as reporter for the Daily Planet.』 『Richard Donner's 1978 epic about the Man of Steel showed how a film about a superhero could be a moving and romantic experience even for people who long ago gave up comic books. Beginning on the icy planet Krypton, the story follows the baby Kal-El, whose rocket ship lands in Smallville, Kansas. He is found there by a childless couple and raised as the shy Clark Kent (the young Kent is played by Jeff East). The film is perhaps most touching in these sequences, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can't figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play. The second half, with Reeve taking over as Clark/Superman, is bustling, enchanting (the scene in which Superman flies girlfriend Lois Lane--played by Margot Kidder--through the night sky is great date material), and funny, thanks largely to Gene Hackman's sardonic portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor.--Tom Keogh』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A more violent, but still enjoyable effort.) 『November 4th, 2009
I don't think it's a big deal, but I will mention that there is some blood in this movie. Not a lot by any means, and not enough to probably give it a second thought, but certain things gave this movie a more mature feel to it. The movie itself starts off slow, and slowly progresses, but once the first major fight scene comes up it barely falls off much.
The Lion returns in this effort which by the time half of the movie was over, I was surprised to see, and the Witch from the first one also makes a small return.
If you are worried if this is going to be too violent for a kid, I'd say overall it's not. The 1-3 year olds won't sit and watch it that much and the older ones, say 8 and up will find it engulfing and magical as I did. Sure, there is a done-that-been-there feel to it since the movie's first incarnation but Narnia: Prince Caspian is sure to please loyal fans and new fans alike.
The ones I'd worry about watching it is probably the more impressionable 4-6 year olds. It may be a bit too intense for them but overall, anyone can view this movie and take something from it.
Many have said that this wasn't as good as the first, but in contrast, I must disagree. This one had a special flair to me. Both movies may be a bit on the long side, but I enjoyed them to a good degree, especially when the first introduced itself in 2006 and I went to the theatre to see it.
3.75 stars.
end note: No, I don't usually rate like that but this movie deserves it. I was more entertained than not here.』
(Better than the First--I Think) 『Yes, I do believe I liked this version better than the first. It's for my daughter, but mom and dad always check 'em out. Pretty good price at Amazon!

(Defective DVD) 『Prince Caspian is an awesome movie. It just so happened that the one we received, freezes up at chapter 21. We didn't know that until it was too late to return because it was summer and life was full and we didn't get a chance to watch it right away. I wish we could have one where all the chapters work well since this is such a great story put to film.』
(not EXACTLY like the book) 『My children and I enjoyed the movie for the most part with the animals actually looking like animals. But, we were all quite disappointed and a little bit disgusted that the movie makers once again had to put something in that didn't belong and wasn't even needed. I am referring to the budding romance between Susan and Prince Caspian. Please! Why was that necessary. Why do children's movies have to fill the need that adults have for sexual undertones (or overtones for that matter)』
(Very Satisfied) 『Product delivered in a very timely manner. Product was as advertised. Very Satisfied with the Service.』 『The magical world of C.S. Lewis beloved fantasy comes to life once again inPrince Caspian, the second installment ofThe Chronicles Of Narniaseries. Join Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy, the mighty and majestic Aslan, friendly new Narnian creatures and Prince Caspian as they lead the Narnians on a remarkable journey to restore peace and glory to their enchanted land. Continuing the adventure ofThe Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobewith more magic and a brand-new hero,Prince Caspianis a triumph of imagination, courage, love, joy and humor your whole family will want to watch again and again.』 『More exciting than The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspiancontinues the movie franchise based on C.S. Lewis' classic fantasy books. The movie picks up where the first left off... sort of. It's been a year since the Pevensie children--Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy (Georgie Henley)--returned to England from Narnia, and they've just about resigned themselves to living their ordinary lives. But just like that, they're once again transported to a fantastical land, but one with a long-abandoned castle. It turns out that they are in Narnia again--and they themselves lived in that castle, but hundreds of years ago in Narnia time. They've been summoned back to help Prince Caspian (Stardust's Ben Barnes, resembling a young, cultured Keanu Reeves), the rightful heir to the throne who's become the target of his power-hungry uncle, King Mraz (Sergio Castellitto). And he's not the only one threatened: Mraz's people, the Telmarines, have pushed all the Narnians--the talking animals, the centaurs and other beasts, the walking trees--to the brink of extinction. Despite some alpha-male bickering, Peter and Caspian agree to fight Mraz alongside the remaining Narnians, including the dwarf Trumpkin (Peter Dinklage) and the swashbuckling mouse Reepicheep (voiced by Eddie Izzard). (Also appearing is Warwick Davis, who was in Willow and the 1989 BBC Prince Caspian.) But of course they most of all miss the noble lion, Aslan, who would have never let this happen to Narnia if he hadn't disappeared. Prince Caspian is epic, evoking memories of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. (Some of the battle elements may seem too familiar, but they were in Lewis's book.) And it's appropriate for kids (Reepicheep could have come out of a Shrek movie), though the tone is dark and there is a lot of death, albeit bloodless. After two successful films, Disney and Walden Media's franchise has proved successful enough that many of the characters are scheduled to return in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. --David Horiuchi

I watched this as a kid growing up in the 70s and I never get tired of watching it 30 years later, bought it on DVD and again on Blu-Ray. Gene Wilder gave no finer performance - earnest, offbeat, a brilliant portrayal which even the esteemed Johnny Depp couldn't touch (that may have been Burton's fault, who cares.) The tale of dysfunctional children from all around world who travel to a magical chocolate factory to compete for a grand prize, only to drop off one by one while exposing their own character flaws - reality show technique 20 years before its time. A great adaptation of the book which keeps the pace moving, provides a managable number of memorable characters, each played perfectly and with zeal. Gene Wilder has some of the best one-liners in response to the often bratty children around him. Sorry I haven't watched the Blu-Ray yet so I can't comment on the transfer quality, but I expect it will meet my expectations which are really just that it be better fidelity than the DVD.』
(Willy Wonka bluray) 『I LOVED this movie as a child and still do to this day. The color and sound are incredible on bluray. I honestly don't know how they take movies from so long ago and restore them so well that it makes you feel like you are watching it all over again. Since when did the candy shop owner have stripes on his shirt?!? Overall I would buy it again.』
(My teens and I love this version-the best) 『Speedy delivery-super quick. The movie is awesome cannot be beat by the re-make even if Jonny depp is in it. picture was clear, sound was perfect. we searched everywhere for it an finally found it here, at a great price. My teens and I have watched this movie since they were little and we haven't stopped loving. We had to own it.』
(HD-DVD Issue) 『I bought the HDDVD version and also had issues with the disc. Unlike the other HDDVD review I read who's disc froze in the special features, my disc froze in the main movie, right as they enter the factory. This is about the worst timing, Im already into the movie, loving the HD picture, and then nothing further right when it gets to the most visually stunning part. I was bummed, still am. At least I bought it post HDDVD demise, so it only cost a couple dollars. I put the HDDVD in the drive within 15 seconds of removing the shrinkwrap, so it is not fingerprints or anything on my part. I use the xbox360 HD Drive with a 360.』
(Classic!) 『All time classic - my 8 year olds love it too. Actually, it was one of them who asked for this movie for Christmas.』 『A poor little boy wins a ticket to visit the inside of a mysterious and magical chocolate factory. When he experiences the wonders inside the factory, the boy discovers that the entire visit is a test of his character.』 『Having proven itself as a favorite film of children around the world,Willy Wonka&the Chocolate Factoryis every bit as entertaining now as it was when originally released in 1971. There's a timeless appeal to Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, which was playfully preserved in this charming musical, from the colorful carnival-like splendor of its production design to the infectious melody of the "Oompah-Loompah" songs that punctuate the story. Who can forget those diminutive Oompah-Loompah workers who recite rhyming parental warnings ("Oompah-Loompah, doopity do...") whenever some mischievous child has disobeyed Willy Wonka's orders to remain orderly? Oh, but we're getting ahead of ourselves ... it's really the story of the impoverished Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other kids and their parental guests, wins a coveted golden ticket to enter the fantastic realm of Wonka's mysterious confectionery. After the other kids have proven themselves to be irresponsible brats, it's Charlie who impresses Wonka and wins a reward beyond his wildest dreams. But before that, the tour of Wonka's factory provides a dazzling parade of delights, and with Gene Wilder giving a brilliant performance as the eccentric candyman,Wonkagains an edge of menace and madness that nicely counterbalances the movie's sentimental sweetness. It's that willingness to risk a darker tone--to show that even a wonderland like Wonka's can be a weird and dangerous place if you're a bad kid--that makes this an enduring family classic.--Jeff Shannon』

I have already gone through several disks and am quite pleased with the purchase overall. The collection appears to be complete, the set is nicely setup, and the DVD menus are nice. If you like the old Twilight Zone, I think this is the collection to get.』
(Great collection and $150 is real cheap) 『Bought this (having wanted access to the entire twilight zone archives since I was very young) thinking I needed it just to fill in a few episodes I might not have seen and to be able to watch any episode at any given time. What I realized is that the marathons leave many episodes out and there are a great deal of episodes that I have not seen (maybe half or more). Also, there are so many that I know I've seen, but cannot remember the plot, so they're as good as new to me. Also two seasons are comprised of hour long episodes and these are a bit more problematic for Sci-fi to play (because of commercials). Also, if you're like me and believe the episodes everyone now are calling silly to be 'high art,' you may find yourself laughing at an episode or two never played (for good reason), e.g. the episode where a slot machine chase a man down and its voice sounds like coins coming out. All i can say is snatch this up at the current price. I paid 75 bucks for season 4 two years ago and got all five from an amazon seller (new) for 125. it's not going to get any cheaper. 』

(One of the most imaginative series of all time) 『"The Prisoner" starring Patrick McGoohan is one of the most imaginative series of all time. Patrick McGoohan stars as a top-level spy (presumably his role in the series "Secret Agent") who abruptly resigns. Apparently McGoohan knows too much, for he is shortly thereafter gassed and when he awakes he is in a surreal place known as "The Village" from which a person may not leave. The Villiage is indeed something out of Kafka, and McGoohan's attempts to escape and reclaim his life are the foundation of each of these 17 episodes.
The series engages the viewer at all times, and became a cult favorite both in Britain and the States when it aired in the late 1960s. I was in junior high when this series aired, and I rarely missed it. Most of my friends were similarly hooked.
It is terrific that this complete series is now available on DVD. Most of us will want to snap it up. Highly recommended. RJB.』
(Be seeing you-again!) 『I have been an ardent fan(?) of this series since it's initial release on CBS in the '60's. The underlying message of a person's right to be an individual and not succumb to pressures exerted by whomever is a timeless theme. Even though the series is now somewhat dated and almost laughable in places (The computer in "The General", for example) Patrick McGoohan's superb portrayal has never been equalled, in my opinion. For those who have seen the remake on TV and have not seen the original, you really should get this set, especially since the price has become more affordable. Ian McKellan is of course a wonderful actor but the series pales in comparison to the original. Rest in peace Patrick McGoohan- your legacy in this most excellent series shall live on.The Prisoner - Complete Series Megaset (40th Anniversary Edition)』
(Prisoner, complete series.) 『Prisoner is "different", it looks a little dated now of course, but it is still a lot of fun to watch. The story is timeless and makes you think......."what is real, could it happen??????" Patrick McGoohan is perfect in the lead role of the confused and angry ex-spy who sets about planning to escape, but where and what is he escaping from? Well done, very different type of spy series. 』
(Brief - and to the point) 『A real plesure to see one of my favorites (without commercials) from the 60s. Of course, some of the technical aspects are a little dated, but "The Prisoner" still remains among the finest series ever produced. Just sit back and enjoy it - psycho-analysis not required. 』 『If a top-level spy decided he didn't want to be a spy anymore, could he just walk into HQ and hand in his resignation? With all that classified knowledge in his head, would he be allowed to become a civilian again, free to go about his life? The answer, according to the stylish, brilliantly conceived 1960s British TV seriesThe Prisoner, is a resounding no. In fact, instead of receiving a gold watch for his years of faithful service, our hero (played by Patrick McGoohan) is followed home to his London flat and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a picturesque village where everyone is known by a number. Where is it? Why was he brought here? And, most important, how does he leave?
As we learn in Episode 1, Number 6 can't leave. The Village's "citizens" might dress colorfully and stroll around its manicured gardens while a band plays bouncy Strauss marches, but the place is actually a prison. Surveillance is near total, and if all else fails, there's always the large, mysterious white ball that subdues potential escapees by temporarily smothering them. Who runs the Village? An ever-changing Number 2, who wants to know why Number 6 resigned. If he'd only cooperate, he's told, life can be made very pleasant. "I've resigned," he fumes. "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered. My life is my own." So sets the stage for the ultimate battle of wills: Number 6's struggle to retain his privacy, sanity, and individuality against the array of psychological and physical methods the Village uses to break him.
So does he ever escape? And does he ever find out who Number 1 is? "Questions are a burden to others," the Village saying goes. "Answers, a prison for oneself." Within this complete 17-episode set (which contains the entire series), all is revealed. Or is it?--Steve Landau』
