(CWO shines in blu-ray)
『There are a plethora of reviews of the movie, but my review is mostly a comparison of the BD vs DVD version. I won't discuss its merits as movie. CWO has a lot of similarities in its treatment of anarchy and violence as Brad Pitt in Fight Club, yet Fight Club is less controversial?

I was too young to see CWO's theatrical release. But since, I've seen it on various tape versions, DVD and finally BD, as a fan of Kubrick's cinema style.

This movie is stellar in BD. I never really thought much of CWO but on BD, the framing of scenes and high resolution detail reveal subtleties that make visuals speak in strong visceral prose like no version before it [could also be remastering?], and the audio is beyond all prior CWO scores on record, tape, CD or its DVD. The subtitles are tack sharp on BD, making for a much more pleasant experience, helping viewers understand droog speak, or "nadsat", yes, yes?

For example, as McDowall's character Alex peruses records in a shop, one can make out clearly titles and liner notes on some covers. Alex's face show subtle changes as blood flows and ebbs into his skin, and shows how McDowall's acted [ or directed ] with frightening zest. Violent scenes of rape and assault appear more play acting or dance moves, as actors use exaggerated movements and victims almost are almost never bruised or bloodied, despite the pounding, compare this to similar themed and recent movies like Fight Club.

The clear crisp BD sound track makes it far easier to discern the nadsat words that at times were garbled in old analog transmission, broadcast TV, VHS, beta, and less on DVD. However, watching the movie with subtitles is less distracting on a large TV in the better font of BD.

The music was a revelation. I never cared for Wendy [credited as Walter prior to her sex change] Carlos's music, sometimes the synthesizer sound gave me headaches. But somehow, the BD version is so much smoother and richer in overtones compared to modern digital synthesizers, I actually enjoyed listening to her.

(typical Kubrick--channeling from the dark to the dark)
『This film has overt messages: we are what we are, and only a chemical means will change us, because there is no such thing as redemption. But chemical solutions are out of the question because we cannot trust the government or doctors not to abuse this power. And redemption is a moot point anyway, because the very idea of redemption is just a catch word to be used by preachers and politicians.

Why would I care about Alex's absolution anyway? The film did nothing to make me care about him or his soul... And yet Kubrick tries to get you to care about this monster. Alex winds up, after his "treatment", unable to defend himself against those he wronged. I was cheering this part of the film, and did not find it believable that people would be horrified by his comeuppance, especially at the hands of those he wronged.

To say there is a glorification of sex and violence is an understatement.

Because the thing that particularly bothers me about this film is the sped up scene of repeated consensual sex between the main character (Alex) and two young women. In the film, the scene is gratuitous porn that makes Alex out to be a stud... he keeps going and going and going. No wonder teenage boys love this movie. This glorification must be Kubrick's idea, not the writer of the book (Anthony Burgess), who is much more honest about his depravity. In the book on which this film is based, the scene involves not women, but two young girls who are drugged and then raped. Why didn't Kubrick stick to the original story? Raping children is much more in character with the violent sociopath that is Alex.

There is one good thing about this film: if I ever need a character reference, all I need do is ask "what do you think of 'A Clockwork Orange'?. The sociopaths will be revealed. Thank you, Kubrick.』

(Naughty, Naughty, Naughty! You Filthy Old Soomka!)
『They just don't make viddies for our glezzies like this anymore! Little Alex and his Droogs will get all the hairs on your plot standing up, real horrorshow! Yet what is true horrorshow is the way the Government reforms little Alex into the model citizen, unable to defend himself against all whom he previously doled out his ultra-violence upon.

Even the title of this movie carries a meaning. Do we really want to reform the incorrigible? And once reformed, will they still be an embarrassment to our own sensibilities and society? Like clockwork, they brainwash little Alex to be a model citizen, and as a result he becomes a Casper Milquetoast who's an embarrassment to the Government. As a result of that, they rebrainwash little Alex to dispel their "treatment" and re-convert him back into the young thug he was, but they now protect him with a cushy job merely to protect themselves against slander. Like that Steely Dan song: "You go back, Jack, do it again," Little Alex is finally free to indulge into his bizzare twisted fantasies, this time with official protection!

Every scene in Clockwork Orange has obvious and hidden meanings to it. Like an onion, Clockwork Orange makes you peel through it, layer by layer. This movie is sheer brillience, which will never go out of date.

Warning: After indulging in this movie, such lovely images will flood your glezzies each time you twang a disc of Beethoven!』

(too violent)
『This film is disturbing in it's violence and should be kept from children under 18.』

(Hasn't aged well...)
『I just saw this movie for the first time on a large screen with a good print. Unfortunately, I don't think it's especially good. I have no problem with either sex or violence, but the way these are used in this movie seems juvenile and tedious. The sensibility that pervades most of it seems more like that of a 14-year old boy than a mature, acclaimed director. Perhaps in 1971 the repetitive "hooliganism" episodes and schoolyard-level phallic props were seen by audiences as amusing and even daring but in 2009 they just look a bit pathetic. Probably it was a lot of fun to make the film, but most of the humor feels really dated and the relentless misogyny wears thin really quickly. 2001 and Dr. Strangelove are much better movies, I think.』
『A jolting tale of crime and punishment stars Malcolm McDowell as a young neo-punk who becomes the guinea pig for a state-sanctioned cure of his tendency toward ?the old ultraviolence.』
『Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess's famous novel is a masterpiece. Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime.A Clockwork Orangeworks on many levels--visual, social, political, and sexual--and is one of the few films that hold up under repeated viewings. Kubrick not only presents colorfully arresting images, he also stylizes the film by utilizing classical music (and Wendy Carlos's electronic classical work) to underscore the violent scenes, which even today are disturbing in their display of sheer nihilism. Ironically, many fans of the film have missed that point, sadly being entertained by its brutality rather than being repulsed by it.--Bryan Reesman

『was great, especial if you got children, great sound effect, if you got 5.1 surround, after toy story i rated this one top 5』

(Such a Cute Movie!)
『I love this movie as much as my grandchildren do. Really cute story with great animation - keeps us all spellbound, and has sparked an interest in real bugs that has blossomed into a hobby! The little ones can't get enough of books about bugs, and love to spot and identify bugs they find in the back yard or on hikes. It all started when they watched A Bug's Life.

There are a number of items that go well with this movie, to make it a truly educational experience that if so fun for kids. The book, The Ant and the Grasshopper by Amy Lowry Poole is fun, The Ant and the Grasshopper, a living ant farm, Fascinations Antworks Illuminated, or Bugopoly Late for the Sky Bug-Opoly. The possibilities are endless - just type the words "bugs and insects" into the Amazon Toys and Games search engine and you will find more goodies than you can imagine.

(A Bug's Life)
『This movie was supposedly shipped on Sept. 01. I have still not recieved it and it is now Oct 08. I emailed the store (FOLLIES) and got no response. It was for my daughter's birthday yesterday but since it isn't here I'd just like to get reimbursed. Thank you, Chrissy Long』

(MUST OWN)
『The only thing i have to say about this amazing Pixar flick is go and buy it now!!!!!!!!!! You wont be displeased i guarantee it』

(+Digital Copy DOES NOT = DVD COPY!!!)
『While the BluRay disc is excellent, I had initially purchased this version so that I would have one for the house and a regular DVD for use in the Mini-Van. However, the +Digital copy is not a DVD you can play in your car, it's a copy you can install with a code to your Windows or Apple computer. So much for not having to buy one BluRay and one regular DVD for use in the car. Just don't get fooled. If you want a copy for your computer, this is great, but not what I was expecting.』
『Journey inside the world of bugs in this epic of miniature proportions. Crawling with imaginative characters, hilarious laughs, and colorful animation, Walt Disney Pictures Presentation of A Pixar Animation Studios Film, A BUG'S LIFE, will "delight everyone -- young, old, or six-legged." (People Magazine) In this 2-disc set you'll step behind the scenes for a look at the innovation and teamwork that resulted in this ingenious film. Loaded with bonus features— including animation not seen in theaters, abandoned sequences, and multiple surprises — A BUG'S LIFE COLLECTOR'S EDITION offers something for everyone from families to film lovers!』
『There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film,Toy Story. Their second feature film,A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty, it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible.

Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz),A Bug's Lifeis the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers he decides to look for help ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help--a hearty bunch of bug warriors--and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunately they are just traveling performers afraid of conflict.

As withToy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired. Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybug, Joe Ranft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick bug, and Michael McShane as a pair of unintelligible pillbugs. The scene-stealer is Atta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big sweet spot for Flik.

More gentle and kid-friendly thanAntz,A Bug Life'sstill has some good suspense and a wonderful demise of the villain. However, the film--a giant worldwide hit--will be remembered for its most creative touch: "outtakes" over the end creditsà la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion inSaving Private Ryan.

The video also contains Pixar's delightful Oscar-winning short,Geri's Game. Box art varies.--Doug Thomas

(HORRIBLE)
『This is the worst movie ever. Slow moving until.....the last scene where there is some violence to end the movie. There is no relevant plot and the scene work was lacking. I would not watch this movie again if someone threatened to cut my balls off. Don't waste your time.』

(AWESOME!!!!)
『If you love Robert Pattison..you will love this movie....
He is an awesome actor!!!』

(Weird movie)
『Rob's acting is really good in this movie; but I did not enjoy it. Not sure what the deal is with all the spiders? Save your money.』

(boring)
『The movie was very slow moving and pretty boring. I like these types of movies normally but this one didn't impress me at all. I never turn movies off before the end but I couldn't stand watching much more of it. I watched most of it but I can't see it changing enough to interest me.』

(Too Much Reliance on Visuals)
『To rate a movie highly because of the appearance of a single actor does an injustice to the story and to everyone else involved. The acting by all was more than adequate to convey the story but for a few directorial impediments. Such as first, the director relied to much on a dark, barely visible setting making it difficult to relax and fully enveloped the nuances of the story. All was lost in the darkness - darkness as a cheap substitute for drama and suspense. Second, props such as spiders contributed little to understanding the character and were cheaply overused. Third, the story was edited to the point of fragmentation leaving the viewer to guess more than understand.』
『Flight Lieutenant Jugg (Twilight's Robert Pattinson), confined to a wheelchair after being wounded in action, arrives at a remote mansion in Wales to recuperate. Suffering from terrible nightmares and visions, he suspects the methods of his psychiatrist, Dr. Hal Burns (Julian Sands). His beautiful aunt, Julia (Rachael Stirling) seems to be the only person he can trust– until circumstances make him doubt even her intentions. Based on the novel “The Haunting of Toby Jugg” by Dennis Wheatley.』

(Problems with the sound!!)
『I bought this because I wanted to replace my standard DVD copies and I love the star trek series and I will buy each of them as they are released on blu-ray, however I am writing this review because I have read most of the reviews that others have left and not one of them has touched on the problem that when you play an episode in the enhanced or original effects the audio drops out completely. At first I thought that it was limited to just the first disk but no I played an episode that was on disk #4 and encountered the same problem. I also bought a copy of this from borders and encountered the same problem so now I have to return both of them! I was playing it on a pioneer player, which is considered to be one of the best players around! I am planning on waiting until the second release if there is one so that this problem can be addressed.』

(It's better than ever!)
『It's better than I remember. When I heard that they were updating the special effects I thought that this was the ONLY thing that needed to be fixed on the original ST. And, to have the original FX still on the blu ray, made this a great purchase!』

(Painstaking Restoration)
『For all of those that think that this is just another cheap re-release of TOS, think again. Each and every frame has been painstakingly restored to it's like new condition. Almost every piece of dust, hair, and dirt has been removed. Make no "Bones" about it. 35mm was the HD of the day. And is in a way, superior to the digital HD of today. The film had grain, yes of course, but it also had incredible clarity and resolution. It is the equivalent of taking a modern 10 Megapixel camera and setting it to shoot at 24 fps. The results would be spectacular, as this remastered version is. The clarity is so good at times, as to make me believe that I could reach out and touch the actors. The colors are vibrant and real for the era. Anything you have seen before is washed out and drab compared to this. The time that was taken to manually and digitally remove almost every defect from the original film must have been staggering. This is truly a labor of love for Paramount and CBS. Admitedly, the new effects aren't state-of-the-art. But they weren't meant to be. They fit the era . And as such, add to the visual experience of TOS. My only complaint would be to release TOS in 16*9 in such a way that didnt distract from the original 4*3 aspect ratio. I just watched "Balance Of Terror" stretched to fit a 16*10 screen with no visible stretching or distorting of the actors at all. So it is possible to do this in a future release. This would look awesome on my 99" projector screen, but the clarity that is lost from digitally expanding the image to 16*9 on my player is just unacceptable. CBS/ Paramount, take note. 16*9 is the modern day aspect ratio. Just as 4*3 was back then.』

(Worth my bucks!)
『Yeah it wasn't cheap but its pretty sweet. I prefer the new effects. The sound is way quiet but whatever I just turn it way up.』

(Why aren't the episodes in order?)
『My wife and I are a couple of Trekkies and couldn't wait for the series to come out on Blu Ray. You can tell the people who worked on this project put a lot of love and respect into their work. The picture is awesome! I like just looking at the restored and enhanced Enterprise. We have just one quibble; why aren't the episodes in order. We collected the series on VHS and each tape had two episodes with original air dates on them. The episodes in this set don't coincide. What's up with that?』
『Space. The Final Frontier. The U.S.S. Enterprise embarks on a five year mission to explore the galaxy. The Enterprise is under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. The First Officer is Mr. Spock, from the planet Vulcan. The Chief Medical Officer is Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy. With a determined crew, the Enterprise encounters Klingons, Romulans, time paradoxes, tribbles and genetic supermen lead by Khan Noonian Singh. Their mission is to explore strange new worlds, to seek new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.』

(easy for kids to relate)
『Got this video for the younger kids in our environmental education class. It was really easy for kids to identify with. We had talked about recycling a lot but this gave them a great view of what actually happens in a recycling plant. also, the kids really identified with the view of what things would be like if there were no recycling. they really got it!!』

(Fun, educational series of DVDs for children)
『My 4-year-old daughter is really beginning to enjoy the Magic School Bus series of DVDs. There are three episodes on this DVD: "Holiday Special" sees the kids go on a field trip to a recycling plant and in the process learn some insightful things about how recycling helps in conservation efforts. "All Dried Up" has Phoebe trying to save the animals and plants of the desert and in the process discovers that they are equipped to take care of themselves. "In the Rainforest" has the kids celebrating Earth Day in the rainforest and learning how cocoa pods, mud puddles and bugs are all part of the ecosystem.

Though some of the concepts here are a bit complex for younger children [my daughter is 4], with parent's help they might actually have fun watching this show and even learn new ideas. I think older children will definitely learn a lot from these shows [6-10]. There are also bonus features on this DVD. All in all, this is great entertainment for kids that is also highly educational.』

『love this dvd, love magic school bus. love how science is being shown in a great entertaining way. My boy is always willing to watch magic school bus.』

(Magic School Bus Holiday)
『Magic School Bus is a great way for kids to learn about science. I wish more episodes were available on DVD.』

(Love this show)
『My son just turned 5 and has loved this show for at least a year. We don't get the re-runs on our cable anymore so wanted to get some of the episodes on DVD. He prefers some of the other episodes better but it is still good. Very educational, fun, and enjoyable to watch even for parents. Great for learning science in a fun way.』
『In HOLIDAY SPECIAL, it's the last day of school before the winter holidays and Wanda plans to see the Nutcracker ballet. But during a trip to Murph's (Dolly Parton) recycling plant, the toy soldier she needs to get into the theater accidently becomes a plastic pellet! The DVD includes two additional magical adventures to celebrate the season: In ALL DRIED UP, the always-caring Phoebe goes on a crusade to save the animals and plants of the desert -- and discovers how well they take care of themselves! In IN THE RAINFOREST, it's Earth Day and the kids discover how cocoa pods, mud puddles, and bugs all play a part in the wondrous web of life.

『Kids learn about the world around them and how to care for it in this trio of engaging adventures based on Joanna Cole's bestselling books. In the title story, Miss Frizzle's class gets a clever tutorial on the wonders of recycling when Wanda makes a regrettable wish to abolish it forever. Faster than you can say "tin can," the Friz whisks her students into the future to discover the perils of a world without recycling. Dolly Parton lends her voice in a guest appearance while several holiday tunes add seasonal mirth. In the other episodes, Phoebe and friends receive a hands-on lesson about the extreme conditions of the desert and how native plants and animals not only survive, but flourish. Then, it's on to the rainforest as the students celebrate Earth Day uncovering the interdependent relationships of cocoa trees, midge flies, and mud wallows. An informative Q&A session follows each 30-minute story to reinforce concepts and clarify fact from fiction. The series never wanes in quality and creativity and remains exemplary edutainment for ages 6 and older.--Lynn Gibson

(The story continues.........)
『This is the fourth movie in the series.
It continues the story of the Bionicle's and my son loves it.
No true Bionicle fan will be disappointed.』

(Grand Kids Loved it!)
『I bought this movie for my Grand kids and they loved it! They said that I would enjoy it during their next sleep over.』

(As our story continues...)
『The story begins where the original comics end: MataNui, a god to his people, has been cast out of his own enormous body by his traitorous brother, Makuta Teridax (though the film never mentions his name). Trapped within the legendary Mask of Life, MataNui (voiced wonderfully by Michael Dorn) is banished to the depths of space, only to crashland on the (not-actually-so-distant) desert planet of BaraMagna. Once he awakens and the Mask forms for him an all-new body, he quickly meets many new friends and foes alike.

Ackar (Jim Cummings) is an older, highly experienced Glatorian, a race of mighty warriors employed as mercenaries and combatants. After his life is saved by a golden-armored new-comer in the arena, the two team up with other Glatorian, Kiina and Gresh, as well as the collector Barix, in a quest to save Bara Magna from the Bone Hunters and Skrall, and help Mata Nui to return to his homeworld to save his people from the tyrannical rule of the Makuta.

1 point off for the horribly-animated water in the very beginning, and another for the still-thriving island of Mata Nui, which in the comics was left a barren wasteland devoid of any signs of life (this was necessary to awaken the being MataNui).
I won't spoil any major plot points, but the 1.25 hour movie does end on a cliffhanger, leaving plenty of room for at least one sequal.
Action is in no short supply, acting is solid, and plot is plentiful in this latest installment of the BIONICLE storyline, and I personally can't wait to see what happens to our newest heroes as their journey continues.』

(LEGO...I am disappoint.)
『Let it never be said that I am overly unfair in my reviews or that I am anything less than a true blue BIONICLE fan. I have followed the franchise quite eagerly since its inception in 2001, when I was just an 11-year-old boy who happened to receive the first BIONICLE comic book packaged with the new issue of LEGO Magazine. I remember the 2003 release of Mask of Light quite fondly, and I still find the film rather enjoyable all these years later. 2004's release of Legends of Metru Nui thrilled me even more, as I quickly discovered that Toa Lhikan is arguably the best character ever to appear in BIONICLE canon. 2005's release of the last movie, Web of Shadows, was also highly enjoyable, as the series took a nice dark turn. I eagerly anticipated the release of the next movie, but it never came until now.

I suppose my first warning sign should have been when I looked at the back of the box and saw the logo of some no-name studio I'd never heard of in place of the familiar Miramax logo, but I didn't care too much; I popped the DVD into my laptop and sat down to watch.

The first few minutes of the film are actually acceptable; everything shown before Mata Nui gets exiled from his own body is roughly on par in terms of animation quality and writing with the previous Miramax films. Mata Nui's arrival on Bara Magna is similarly nice, right up until he finishes making a body for himself, at which point the film moves down from "acceptable" into "mediocre" and doesn't stop moving down until it reaches the end, which I would give a name except it would likely result in me being banned from all civilized conversation for a period of no less than five years. Michael Dorn, who voices Mata Nui, did a reasonable job during the intro voice-over, but unfortunately seems to be trying to play the character using a voice that suggests a horribly-done combination of Dan Green and Peter Cullen.

At first I thought I'd merely have to deal with an poorly-acted main protagonist, so I wasn't too worried, but then more characters were introduced and I realized that I was dealing with a poorly-acted film. "This has to be a record," I thought. "I don't think I've ever seen a movie that I desperately wanted to end after watching only the first ten minutes."

The film appears to suffer from poor voice acting all around, but I'm not entirely sure that's a fair accusation, because voice acting can only be so good when you're forced to read some of the blandest and most unnatural dialogue imaginable. Arguably the best voice acting in the film comes from the characters who are actually supposed to be annoying: since the characters were deliberately supposed to make me want to shatter my screen with a golf club, I'd say they can declare Mission Accomplished on that count.

As for other counts, I have to attack the film's visual style now, being that film is supposed to be a visual medium. While I will admit that the characters themselves are extremely well-animated, the rest of the film ISN'T. The character animation quality has received a solid step up from the older films, while the environments has been downgraded to roughly third-rate-PS2-launch-title graphics quality, and the contrast is rather jarring, though not as jarring as it could be, since the character animation quality starts to become distinctly inconsistent during battle sequences.

And now we're onto the battle sequences. The previous films had battle scenes that actually looked somewhat like actual actors performing a well-choreographed fight scene, the kolhii match-of-death from Mask of Light notwithstanding. This new film, however, seems to have decided that the best possible fight sequences should look less like people fighting and more like toys fighting, and the resulting battles come off looking unnatural and uninteresting, rarely involving the dramatic poses and awesome acrobatics that previous films like Web of Shadows featured. I'll show you what I mean: early on, Mata Nui, having just formed himself into a full body, finds himself in a fight with a savage beast called a Vorox. Near the beginning of the battle, Mata Nui finds himself quickly thrown down onto his back, trying to avoid the Vorox's stinger tail as it whips down at him. The first time, he rolls to the right, then rolls back to the center. The second time, he rolls to the left in almost the same exact way, then rolls back to center. The third, he rolls to the right AGAIN, using almost the same animation as the first time, and then rolls back to center AGAIN, followed by him blocking the fourth attempt with his new shield, which causes the stinger to break off entirely and causes the Vorox to flee. THIS IS NOT HOW YOU MAKE AN INTERESTING BATTLE, EVEN IF YOUR HERO DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIGHT YET.

This review is already running a little long, so I'm going to flash through the remaining points at the same time, which is convenient, since they're essentially the same category anyway: the sound. Any and all sound in the film. The sound effects all seem to have been pulled from the "stock cartoon noises" pile, while the music is lacks any of the majesty or power that the Miramax films put into their soundtrack, settling instead for what really comes off sounding like a stock cartoon soundtrack.

About the only thing that could possibly anger me more than this movie is the fact that Tinseltown Toons, the studio responsible for this festering pile of shovelware, has already been contracted to do the NEXT TWO BIONICLE MOVIES. If this doesn't scream "prematurely killing the franchise", I don't know what does.』

(Good Stuff)
『I orderd this as a replacement for one that my friend "borrowed" and never returned to me before I moved. I am happy with the transaction, the only difference that I noticed between my previous copy and the one that I ordered was with the exterior case/box. The design is slightly different, it makes the case look like a well loved/read leather bound book a little tattered, but this had no effect on the DVD's playback.』

(Summed up in one word...PERFECT.)

Lord of the Rings, the `Gone with the Wind' of the sci-fi fantasy film. The name of these 3 legendary novels has weaved itself deeply into our modern day culture. Whether you read `The Hobbit' in grade school or have read the Tolkien lore time and time again there is no doubt that this original saga is a treasure of that last century.

Turning this epic novel saga into a full length feature film was something that probably every major name in directing wanted to do. Yet, Lord of the Rings may be the most difficult film saga to be created. The story is abundant with characters of all kinds. The plot is rich with detail and the pages of the book themselves describe everything from the way a person walks to a town or landscape down to the last grain of soil. So it was Peter Jackson who decided to rise up and take the task of creating this film. In a time where film making technology has reached a golden age it was time not just to make one film but make a trilogy. It was decided not to film each piece at a time but rather film all three simultaneously and it was something that Mr. Jackson could not accomplish alone. There is a long list of writers, artists, actors editors, and yes millions of fans that lead to the completion of this project. The Lord of the Rings can be summed up in one word. That word is PERFECT.

I have seen a great many films in my life and my favorites would have to be the saga pieces. This saga is a mind blowing masterpiece and getting Oscar for best picture in 2003 sealed its page in the book of fantastic films. I will not review each film individually because they are not meant to be seen individually. The cast is brilliant and the fact that not a single actor was singled out for an individual performance only made it better. The creation of these films was a team effort. Yes there are a few major plot points removed from these films and there are some things that were changed around. I feel as a person who has read the novels and seen the films, feel that these changes were for the best. The books themselves have some dead spots that could be done without and there are characters that really have no place in the story as a whole, but it was very admirable of Jackson to pay homage to the fan favorite Tom Bombadil in the extended edition of `The Two Towers'. The extended editions of these films only make them better as they do make them lengthier. Jackson and the crew really wanted to make these films special so once they did their job in the theaters they called the cast and crew back to add new scenes and extend old ones to make the films truer to the story and enhance the development of the characters. The score done beautifully by Howard Shore is also extended and you can even purchase extended edition soundtracks. The special effects played a major role in this film and they worked the creatures looked extremely lifelike especially Gollum. By using a brand new kind of CGI technology called motion capture, Andy Sirkis was transformed into the somber, mysterious creature that LOTR fans love. The battle sequences in breathtaking and so intense there were moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. The ability to make actors like Elijah Wood and John Rys-Davis look like they were pint size compared to a towering Orlando Bloom or Ian McKellen was done flawlessly. The make-up on all the cast members be it Orc or Elf really brought the Tolkien world off the pages and into reality. Still, I feel that what truly made this film beautiful was the location. New Zealand is a lost world most of the country still untouched by industry. The land still looks like something out of a fairy tale. Through computers and sets, The Shire, Minas Tirith, Rivendell and all the other major cities were brought to life exactly as they are described in the novels.

Even if you are not a fan, I would still suggest seeing these three films. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are fantasy or anything to that extent. It's just because this cinematic marvel goes up there with films such as Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and Lawrence of Arabia to the more modern day greats like Dances With Wolves and Braveheart. There probably will come a day where a film graces the big screen with this degree of grandeur, but I am quite sure it will be a long time until then.

(Great movies.)
『Nnot completely accurate to the books, but let's face it, each movie would be as long as the combined trilogy if they were. Good movies.』

(Lord Of the ring - Extended Edition)
『I got the product before I expected it. I ordered the DVD and received within two days. The quality of the dvd is flawless; without any scratches or dents :-)』
『This critically acclaimed epic trilogy follows the quest undertaken by the hobbit, Frodo Baggins, and his fellowship of companions to save Middle-earth by destroying the One Ring and defeating the evil forces of the Dark Lord Sauron. With new and extended scenes carefully added back into the film, the 12-disc set also includes hours of bonus features.』
『The extended editions of Peter Jackson'sThe Lord of the Ringspresent the greatest trilogy in film history in the most ambitious sets in DVD history. In bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly unfilmable work to the screen, Jackson benefited from extraordinary special effects, evocative New Zealand locales, and an exceptionally well-chosen cast, but most of all from his own adaptation with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, preserving Tolkien's vision and often his very words, but also making logical changes to accommodate the medium of film. While purists complained about these changes and about characters and scenes left out of the films, the almost two additional hours of material in the extended editions (about 11 hours total) help appease them by delving more deeply into Tolkien's music, the characters, and loose ends that enrich the story, such as an explanation of the Faramir-Denethor relationship, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. In addition, the extended editions offer more bridge material between the films, further confirming that the trilogy is really one long film presented in three pieces (which is why it's the greatest trilogy ever--there's no weak link). The scene of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship added to the first film proves significant over the course of the story, while the new Faramir scene at the end of the second film helps set up the third and the new Saruman scene at the beginning of the third film helps conclude the plot of the second.

To top it all off, the extended editions offer four discs per film: two for the longer movie, plus four commentary tracks and stupendous DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two for the bonus material, which covers just about everything from script creation to special effects. The argument was that fans would need both versions because the bonus material is completely different, but the features on the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the only reason a fan would need them would be if they wanted to watch the shorter versions they saw in theaters (the last of which,The Return of the King, merely won 11 Oscars). TheLOTRextended editions without exception have set the DVD standard by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features.--David Horiuchi

(Wonderful Movie)
『I, personally, love this movie. I've seen this "classic" at least a dozen times and have enjoyed it time and time again. It's a beautiful love story filled with intrigue and suspense. I highly recommend it.』

(Very Average)
『While the idea behind this movie has great potential its actual execution was rather blase. The soundtrack takes away from the story instead of enhancing it, the acting is not that great, and the script is kind of silly. Its entertaining in its own way but definitely not something I'd watch more than once.』

(Broderick gets a YEAH! The rest, merely a BLAH!)
『"Ladyhawke" is one of those water cooler conversation movies. It is always brought up as the film everyone has heard of, but rarely has been seen - and those that have seen it, worship the ground it steps on. Recently, "Ladyhawke" came across my player, and the opportunity to view this romantic fantasy was presented. Being an enormous fan of both "The Princess Bride", "Willow", and any of the reincarnations of "Robin Hood", I was eager to add another title to the cannon. I wanted to be that guy that stood around the water cooler mentioning "Ladyhawke" to the utter confusion of my coworkers. Alas, my dreams were not that of Navarre or Isabeau, instead they were shattered as soon as the 2+ hours were completed. One can argue that this is a creative film; one could argue that the attraction between Hauer and Pfiffer was pure uncut chemistry, and one could argue that this is one of those forgotten classics that needs to be remembered. Disappointingly, that is not my reaction to this Richard Donner helmed behemoth. From a disastrous score (yep, jumping on that bandwagon) to cardboard acting to a underdeveloped plot, "Ladyhawke" failed to be anything more than just your average fantasy film.

As the anticipation of angry faces on this review is realized, let me stress my points. "Ladyhawke" had quite a bit of potential. The idea was in place, the actors may have been able to handle their respective roles (at least Broderick could), and the director was the director of "Superman". How could this project fail? At the beginning, there are no problems. Our introduction to Phillipe aka "the Mouse" felt genuine and unique. His escape from prison gave us a deeper insight to his character, his abilities, and his child-like motives. The opening scene felt like it was going to set the tone for the remainder of the film, and for the brief 15-minutes of Phillipe's escape, the level of enjoyment was up. Then, we are full-throttled into the world of Navarre, and our dynamic changes. This becomes less of a film about Phillipe, whom I was rooting for, but instead a substandard story about two star-crossed lovers that by magic cannot be together. Not only does our dynamic change (less Phillipe more quiet stares and gruff Hauer), but our story devolves into whatever Donner feels like throwing in on that day of shooting. Never are we introduced to magic within the world, but suddenly we are to believe that this mutation is plausible. There is realization that we are focusing on these two particular individuals, but we have no control group to experience the day-to-day of this world. Then, more intermediate characters are brought forward to build excitement, when honestly, the just build confusion. Question arise like was Cezar (Alfred Molina!) necessary, was John Wood as evil as predicted as the Bishop (need more!), and where does Imperius fit within everything. "Ladyhawke" felt like Donner wanted sweeping landscapes, star-crossed lovers, and an epic church battle, but cared nothing for what fell in between.

With a lacking structure, we are forced to plop ourselves down and watch Hauer and Pfiffer carry this film - which is the bigger tragedy of this film because neither understand their roles not provide us with any definition. Isabeau, the less developed of the two, begins with mere stares, being more mysterious then passionate, and then, as we get closer to the finale, Donner makes us question her love for Hauer - which undermines this entire film. It makes us think that this is not eternal love, but merely a difficult circumstance. Hauer, more muscle than mind, fights his way through every battle using a sword the size of Phillipe. He is the most grounded of our group, and seems to be fighting more for their love than Pfiffer, but one needs to question when this epic battle didn't happen earlier. Why was Phillipe needed to spark this journey? If the love was that powerful, wouldn't Hauer have tried to meet with Imperius prior, fought the Bishop himself, and perhaps won his love himself? This piece just didn't fit - their characters wanted it, but why couldn't they do it?

Finally, the music is horrible. Yes, the 80s were a time of synthesizers and imagination, but it just didn't fit with this genre of film. No matter how you put it, the music ruins the scenes in which we feel like the guards are going to break out in dance or have huge sunglasses. Donner failed in the world of sound for this film, and merely for that - I can see why "Ladyhawke" hasn't taken off further.

FILM: This film was flimsy. The story wasn't structurally sound, the support (aka the actors) didn't know who their characters were, and the only shine in this darkened tunnel was Matthew Broderick, who charmed his way out of every predicament possible. This is tough film to rewatch and even a tougher challenge to enjoy.

VISUAL: The special effects were pure 80s, one cannot fault highly for that. Yet this transfer was horrible. It was like a VHS copy onto DVD. Warner has not updated this disc since DVDs were first introduced, and that is sad.

SOUND: One must applaud the genius who decided that synthesizers were a key element to period fantasy films. I have never heard anything quite like this before, and I don't think I will again. "Ladyhawke" is ruined, no matter what you say, due to the sound chosen to be our "Hero's March".

EXTRAS: Staying true to the idea that nothing has changed since DVDs were first introduced, the extras contained are bios of the actors (done in page format - not video), a diary of some of the key scenes (again page format), suggestions of other films, and finally, the quintessential trailer. Nothing else. I am not an audio commentary snob, but Donner's words - even Hauer's gruff voice would have added to this disc immensely.

Overall, not impressed. I began this film with hopes to discover a new fantasy to introduce to friends and be that guy around the water cooler. "Ladyhawke" is not that film. I believe it has been unjustly pushed into a cult category due to the popularity of its actors and possibly director. The acting is below par, the soundtrack is hilarious, and the story is as ramshackled as this disc. It is not a film to talk about, not a film to watch, nor a film to enjoy. This was a disappointment - I can applaud Matthew Broderick for not forcing me to throw the disc out after the first hour, but other than that it failed. "Ladyhawke" should be left in the darkened backlist of the local video store for years to come, only to be seen by some unsuspecting person hoping for the same quest I envisioned, but being disgusted again and again and again.

Grade: ** out of *****

『This was a great movie when I first saw it and seeing it again just proves I was right back then.

Received on time and in good shape.』

(great movie)
『I love this movie. This is one of the best love stories ever made on film. Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer have good chemistry at the end. I also enjoyed the performances of Leo McKern and Matthew Broderick.』
『IN THIS 700 YEAR OLD LEGEND OF LOVE AND HONOR, TWO LOVERS ARE SEPARATED BY AN EVIL CURSE. A VALIANT KNIGHT IS AIDED IN HIS QUEST BY A WISE CRAKCING THIEF IN HIS QUEST TO BREAK THE SPELL BY DESTROYING ITS CREATOR.』
『This lushly produced fantasy has gained a loyal following since its release in 1985, and it gave a welcomed boost to the careers of Matthew Broderick, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Rutger Hauer. You have to ignore the overly aggressive music score (critic Pauline Kael aptly dubbed it "disco-medieval") and director Richard Donner's reckless allowance of anachronistic dialogue and uninspired storytelling, but there's a certain charm to the movie's combination of romance and heroism. Broderick plays a young thief who comes to the aid of tragic lovers Isabeau (Pfeiffer), who is cursed to become a hawk every day at sunrise and Navarre (Hauer) who turns into a wolf at sunset. The curse was cast by an evil sorcerer-bishop (John Wood), and as Broderick eludes the bishop's henchmen, Navarre struggles to conquer the villain, lift the curse, and be reunited with his love in human form. The tragedy of this lovers' dilemma keeps the movie going, and Broderick is well cast as a young, medieval variation of Woody Allen.--Jeff Shannon

『The discs do not work in any of my machines, they seem to be over sized and do not work』

(EXCELLENT HORROR MOVIE)
『THIS WAS A GOOD HORROR MOVIE, FILLED WITH BETRAYAL, ROMANCE, AND REVENGE. THE CAST WAS EXCELLENT. MICHAEL SHEEN WAS AWESOME!!! BILL NIGHY'S CHARACTER WAS DEEP AND WICKEN.』

(Rise of the Lycans)
『This movie is the prequel to the the other Underworld films and ties everything into one coherent series. Most of the original actors are back and we learn how Lucian became so powerful. A must see and have for anyone that has seen or is collecting the other two films. Rona Mitra gives a great performance as the Vampire daughter of the high elder who falls for the Lycan Lucian. *****』

(Russ' Lycan Review)
『A good buy, not a great buy. Good story, but you really miss Seline (Kate Beckinsale):( Kate is why most of us started watching the Underworld series, but she leaves us for this one so we can get some history. BOOOOHHHH! A descent movie, will give a B+. Comparible to the 1st, not quite as good, definitely not as good as 2nd (Evolution).』
Underworld: Rise of the Lycansdelves into the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires, known as Death Dealers, and the barbaric Lycans (werewolves). A young Lycan, Lucian (Michael Sheen), emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has persecuted them for hundreds of years. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, the beautiful vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra), in his battle to free the Lycans from their brutal enslavement.』
『This prequel to Len Wiseman’sUnderworldandUnderworld: Evolutionis distinctively different, especially minus the nimble vampire warrior star, Selene (Kate Beckinsale).Underworld: Rise of the Lycanstakes its cues from the vampire/werewolf battles that occur in the other films, but director Patrick Tatopoulos focuses here on the young werewolf Lucian's (Michael Sheen) rise to leadership.Rise of the Lycansis set mostly within the walls of vampire lord Viktor’s (Bill Nighy) castle, so the film’s silver, black, and blue palette reflects a world happening under moonlight. From the outset, when Viktor brings Lucian, the first werewolf, into the world, this villainous bloodsucker’s daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), is smitten with Lucian’s hairy appearance and instinctual intelligence. As years pass, Lucian grows tired of watching his race suffer slavery and imprisonment, and recruits a human named Raze (Kevin Grevioux) to assist rebellion. This archetypal plot is not so riveting, and what carriesUnderworld: Rise of the Lycansare the battle scenes between vampires and werewolves, which are excitingly fast-paced and brutal. The whole film adopts a medieval battlefield aesthetic that carries an otherwise clichéd story about illicit love and freedom fighting. Some characters, like the traitor vampire Tannis (Steven Mackintosh), also intrigues throughout, as one guesses who he will ally with.Underworld: Rise of the Lycansmay not be the finest film in the werewolf and vampire archives independently, but its mixed monstrosity makes it unique and entertaining, especially on a big screen.--Trinie Dalton
