(Reacquaint with "The Birds")
『Hitchcock's 1963 drama/horror/thriller "The Birds" details the story of a city woman (Tippi Hedren) going to the rural coastal town Bodega Bay to play a coquettish prank on a lawyer whom she met in the city (Rod Taylor). As she starts to get to know the town the birds mysteriously attack in force.

"The Birds" might well be the first official nature-runs-amok flick, which were made hugely popular a dozen years later with the release of "Jaws," the film that opened the Pandora's box to creature-on-the-loose flicks.

I believe "The Birds" should be enjoyed at face value as a simple story of birds mysteriously attacking a coastal hamlet, but a more allegorical interpretation is that Melanie (Hedren) represents modern ideas (for 1963, that is) that attempt to infect the rural communities where people live and think in a simpler, more conservative way. The village is not ready to accept and incorporate these "new" concepts and so nature itself attempts to vomit out the infection, irregardless of hometown damage and casualties. Yet this interpretation seems to be rejected by the film itself in the restaurant scene where the mother with two kids hysterically rebukes Melanie for supposedly causing the bird attacks; when Melanie slaps the mother, this irrational notion is 'slapped' out of the viewer as well, as if to say, "That's stupid, Melanie is not the cause of this, whether literally or figuratively."

WHAT DOESN'T WORK:

- For the better part of an hour the story plays out as a slow drama, which will likely turn off those with ADHD. Personally, I find this approach refreshing in light of the frenetic editing and absurd action sequences of modern "blockbusters." Films like "The Birds" seem almost daring by comparison; in fact, it's startling. Besides, the beautiful Bodega Bay photography provides some nice backdrop eye-candy to help maintain one's attention with the soap operatics.
- One obvious plot hole is: Why do Melanie, the schoolmarm and the kids flee the schoolhouse? Wouldn't it be wiser to simply blockade themselves in an inner room with no windows? Or maybe there isn't such an interior room big enough to fit all the kids; after all, it appears to be a fairly small schoolhouse.
- Complaints about Melanie's supposedly lame prank on Mitch (Taylor) are nitpicking at best; and criticisms of Melanie foolishly searching for the source of a mysterious sound -- even though she must know what it is -- can easily be chalked up to curiosity killing the cat (for instance, while stopping by Point Pleasant, WV, on vacation in 2005 I went into an old abandoned building that used to be a home for troubled kids back in the day; my wife refused to go any where near the creepy domicile but I HAD to go in and look around; even the satanic graffiti and shocked birds flying out the windows didn't deter me!).
- After recently seeing films like the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", I can hardly find "The Birds" horrifying, although I certainly find it very entertaining. Really, the creepiest aspect of the movie is Mitch's hovering, suspicious mother, played by Jessica Tandy -- whoa, is she scary.
- The age difference of Mitch and his sister seems off. Taylor (Mitch) was 33 years-old during filming, although he looks to be more like 40 or older, but his sister in the story (Veronica Cartwright) was only 13. That's a twenty-year difference. I could see her being his daughter, but his sister? Also, if Veronica is 13 that means his creepy mother had sex a mere 13 years before -- and that's a really scary thought!

WHAT WORKS:

- As noted above, the slow dialogue-driven drama of the first hour is actually appealing in light of the modern glut of moronic cgi-laden, frenetically-edited drivel, not to mention the awesome coastal Northern California cinematography.
- Viewing the film is like going back in time to the early 60s. It's entertaining to see the clothing and decor styles, as well as social interactions, etc.
- Although I don't find Tippi sexy, I do enjoy her facial expressions. I know this is an odd comment, but she does have that Paul Stanley pouty lips rockstar expression down pat.
- Suzanne Pleshette's in the cast -- now SHE's sexy.
- There are numerous memorable and thrilling sequences -- the various bird attacks, the guy with no eye balls, the phone booth scene, etc. I also enjoyed the interesting discussion on birds in the diner sequence
- [END SPOILER!] I love the mysterious way the film ends with no explanation or dialogue. The sea of birds seem to permit their departure, even though the fowls could easily stop them if they wanted.

The film runs 2 hours.

(Wretched Hitchcock)
『Hitchcock made some good films, such as North by Northwest. But The Birds was not one of them (nor Psycho). Direction and writing are nigh nonexistent. Was Hitchcock on tranquilizers while doing this film? If not for the special effects crew this film would be wretched, as is sometimes the case in Hollywood (such as The Mist, another example of extraordinary special effects talent mismatched with horrid direction and writing). I know, saying Hitchcock made bad films is like saying Michelangelo couldn't sculpt or Shakespeare couldn't write. But that simply isn't the case.
The Birds is a drunken flop in all but special effects.』

(An oldie but most definitely a goodie!)
『*exhales deeply* 20 horror reviews down, 11 to go before I reach my "31 reviews for 31 days of October" goal. With Halloween at the tail end, October is definitely the "month of horror" should there ever be one, and "The Birds" is a definite horror masterpiece. Although this movie is over 40 years old, watching it today, there really isn't any "dated" feel to it, unlike some other horror movies of the time (such as "Blood Feast", although that movie is still enjoyable B-movie gold).

"The Birds" is full of suspense and a thickening plot, and is able to be a scary movie without relying heavily on the graphic side of horror, although I will admit there are a few scenes that were probably quite graphic for the mid '60s audience. However, this is certainly a movie that proves Alfred Hitchock the "Master of Suspense". The birds are the villain altogether, a miniature army like the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park". And that's one of the things that makes this such a great horror movie. Usually, there's only one villain in a horror movie, but "The Birds" is able to produce a countless amount of villains, in the flocks and flocks of angry birds! Even today, such a concept is rather rare, so for it's time, it was most certainly a visionary concept, I would assume!

Although I'm probably a lot younger than most people familiar with this film, I still think "The Birds" is a suspenseful and brilliantly-done horror masterpiece. What it lacks in the gorier side of horror, it undoubtedly makes up for in the awesome writing of the film, and the all-around suspense. Highly recommended for all horror fans, especially in time for Halloween! Well, only ten more reviews to go before I reach my goal, time for a breather. Thanks for the time, and peace.』

(1963 Hitchcock dvd.)
『This film must have shocked audiences in the early sixties, the same way that Jaws, shocked audiences in the mid-seventies. A dark perspective of nature vs. man, which had some, state of the art, visual effects, for the times. Scary and effective, and one of Hitchcock's best editing sequences, namely the scene, where the birds attack, at the gas station, which ends in disaster and destruction. Even though the film's subject matter is heavy, it's presented in such a way, that the viewer is aware, that it's only a movie, so, it's very entertaining to watch.』
『AS BEAUTIFUL BLONDE MELANIE DANIELS ROLLS INTO BODEGA BAY IN PURSUIT OF ELIGIBLE BACHELOR MITCH BRENNER, SHE IS INEXPLICABLY ATTACKED BY A SEAGULL. SUDDENLY THOUSANDS OF BIRDS ARE FLOCKING INTO TOWN, PREYING ON SCHOOLCHILDREN AND RESIDENTS IN A TERRIFYING SERIES OF ATTACKS. CONTAINS MANY BONUS FEATURES.』
『Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes." From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. The Birdsfollows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), as she travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) she's only just met. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds, and Hitchcock's skill at staging action is brought to the fore. Beyond the superb effects, however,The Birdsis also one of Hitchcock's most psychologically complicated scenarios, a tense study of violence, loneliness, and complacency. What really gets under your skin are not the bird skirmishes but the anxiety and the eerie quiet between attacks. The director elevated an unknown model, Tippi Hedren (mother of Melanie Griffith), to being his latest cool, blond leading lady, an experience that was not always easy on the much-pecked Ms. Hedren. Still, she returned for the next Hitchcock picture, the underratedMarnie. Treated with scant attention by serious critics in 1963,The Birdshas grown into a classic and--despite the sci-fi trappings--one of Hitchcock's most serious films.--Robert Horton

(Didn't quite do it for me)
『Although I enjoyed the look of "The Phantom Menace," and found many of the characters intriguing, the overall impact fell just short of 3 stars or my idea of the positive zone. There simply isn't enough depth to the story or characters to enable me to suspend my belief in the face of the unconvincing and slightly ridiculous Star Wars mythology. Maybe the point is not to pay attention to this stuff at all but I can't be satisfied by great action scenes and some nifty sci-fi settings alone.』

(Would've Been Five Stars If It Weren't For That Meddling Kid)
『Yes, my main gripe, like many fans of the franchise, is Jake Lloyd. But to surprise a few people, I have no problems with Jar Jar Binks. He doesn't bother me in any way when I watch it. Do I think he was a little over the top? Yes. Do I think he, along with the Neimoidians, are racial stereotypes of Jamaicans and Asians respectively? No. The story is good but it can plod along at a very sluggish pace. For instance, once the story gets to Tatooine, they could've trimmed a few scenes, the Podrace imparticular. And some scenes on Coruscant feel slow as well, like the pointless scenes of watching Palpatine take the Queen to her apartment suite. Its brief but un-necessary. Liam Neeson does an admirable job as Qui-Gon, portraying him as a caring yet very formidable warrior. Ewan McGregor portrays Obi-Wan as a young, headstrong Jedi. The character at least goes through development over the course of the prequel trilogy and he'll eventually become the character from the "first" (fourth) film. Natalie Portman is alright as Queen Amidala but she's no Princess Leia. Though her hairdos can outdo Leia's and both are good with a blaster, the way the character's acted out comes across as wooden and stiff. And when Portman actually is the Queen, where does that deep, accented way of speaking come from? Is that Keira Knightley dubbing her voice when she's in the Queen's clothes? I don't know. And then there's Jake Lloyd, who's able to take the concept of what Anakin is to become in the future and make the character less intimidating. To know that in Vader's youth, he was prone to shout "Yipee!" and be called "Ani". That's not very threatening! Though I will give him credit for at least trying, its just that they did not capture the best (if there is any) performances of the actor and I'm pretty sure Lucas and the producers could've done A LOT better. There are some familiar faces from the original movies; Kenny Baker as R2-D2 (not much has changed over the course of six films) and his first meeting with a pre-gold plated C-3PO (still played by Anthony Daniels) and Ian McDiarmid as Senator (later Supreme Chancellor) Palpatine and his sinister alter ego, Darth Sidious. Darth Maul is a formidable villain for the film, though there always seems to be a co-villain in the newer films instead of just one singular villain, but I guess for all six you can count the Emperor as an over-arching villain, but I digress. And there are cameos by a young Jabba the Hutt, some Wookies in the Senate scene and General Zod himself, Terence Stamp as Supreme Chancellor Vallorum. The fight scenes are some the best, the four different fights at the climax being the standout. And its time for to once again praise John Williams. The man can do no wrong it seems as the music is just fantastic. My favorite set pieces being Duel of the Fates and the space fight. And The Imperial March is incorporated into Anakin's theme, forshadowing the fate the character will meet.』

(Mixed Resutls)
『This could have been one of the better Star Wars movies. It certainly had excellent special effects and a superb duel between two Jedi and the Sith. However, it was marred by two characters. Jar Jar Binks turned out to be one of the most annoying characters ever conceived, whose every utterance was like hearing fingernails raked across a blackboard (one prominent critic wrote in anticipation of the next Star Wars movie, "Jar Jar Binks must die!" Unfortunately, he did not). The other was the child Anakin. I think, however, that this was primarily due to the dialogue given him; there were many instances where he just should have been silent and Lucas had him talking his head off with inane comments, but in truth his inflection left a lot to be desired during the exciting parts).』

(THE worst.)
『Lucas has defended this film (and subsequent movies) by saying "It's for kids." This is not only the weakest cop-out I've ever heard, but makes it plainly obvious Lucas has no idea who his audience is. The man went from being a Francis Copolla to a Michael Bay. It's sad and depressing.』

(Well done)
『I am a first generation Star Wars fan. I was 9 years old when A New Hope came out, and like everyone else I was blown away. It was a thrill ride that kept on going through six years and three wonderful films.

So like most I was excited to hear that, finally, Lucas was going back and bringing us more Star Wars. It was too good to be true! Here I am at 30 years old and Episode 1 is coming out!

I think that with most fans here in lies the problem...

Now we are older. None of the original fans are kids anymore. And I firmly believe this is why all the negative crap about Episode 1.

No, it's not the same. It CAN'T be. We're not children...we have had twenty years of sophisticated sci-fi movies under our belts. What dazzeled us as kids simply won't work anymore.

Don't believe me? Ask any kid who saw Episode 1 when they were 8 to maybe 13 years old. The majority LOVED it. Why? The same reasons we loved the original back in 1977. The didn't have the baggage of 'Lucas changed our favorite film series'. All we had as kids were things like the Star Trek and Lost In Space TV series and films like 2001 and Planet Of The Apes. Star Wars WAS new and different...and very special. As adults, it just isn't anymore, considering how much SPFX have progressed (and, of course we do have the original trilogy to thank for most of those leaps and bounds).

Next time you see Episode 1...try to watch it with a kid. Maybe you might just see it reflected back at you the way our parents saw it in our eyes back in 1977.』

『Begin your STAR WARS DVD collection with STAR WARS: Episode 1 THE PHANTOM MENACE. Packed with over six hours of additional material, including exclusive documentaries and never-before-seen deleted scenes, this 2-disc set provides the perfect showcase for the incredible detail and breathtaking scope of George Lucas's first episode in the mythic STAR WARS saga.』
『"I have a bad feeling about this," says the young Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan McGregor) inStar Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menaceas he steps off a spaceship and into the most anticipated cinematic event... well, ever. He might as well be speaking for the legions of fans of the original episodes in theStar Warssaga who can't help but secretly ask themselves: Sure, this isStar Wars, but is itmy Star Wars? The original elevated moviegoers' expectations so high that it would have been impossible for any subsequent film to meet them. And as with all theStar Warsmovies,The Phantom Menacefeatures inexplicable plot twists, a fistful of loose threads, and some cheek-chewing dialogue. Han Solo's swagger is sorely missed, as is the pervading menace of heavy-breather Darth Vader. There is still way too much quasi-mystical mumbo jumbo, and some of what was fresh aboutStar Wars22 years earlier feels formulaic. Yet there's much to admire. The special effects are stupendous; three worlds are populated with a mélange of creatures, flora, and horizons rendered in absolute detail. The action and battle scenes are breathtaking in their complexity. And one particular sequence of the film--the adrenaline-infused pod race through the Tatooine desert--makes the chariot race inBen-Hurlook like a Sunday stroll through the park.

Among the host of new characters, there are a few familiar walk-ons. We witness the first meeting between R2-D2 and C-3PO, Jabba the Hutt looks younger and slimmer (but not young and slim), and Yoda is as crabby as ever. Natalie Portman's stately Queen Amidala sports hairdos that make Princess Leia look dowdy and wields a mean laser. We never bond with Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), and Obi-Wan's day is yet to come. Jar Jar Binks, a cross between a Muppet, a frog, and a hippie, provides many of the movie's lighter moments, while Sith Lord Darth Maul is a formidable force. Baby-faced Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) looks too young and innocent to command the powers of the Force or wield a lightsaber (much less transmute into the future Darth Vader), but his boyish exuberance wins over skeptics.

Near the end of the movie, Palpatine, the new leader of the Republic, may be speaking for fans eagerly awaitingEpisode IIwhen he pats young Anakin on the head and says, "We will watch your career with great interest." Indeed! --Tod Nelson

『Excellent product where all information advertised was accurate. The photo was very clean and the sound was very sharp. Seller very fast. Definitely purchase from again.』

(Remasters: an improvement of the original)
『While I feel a sense of wistfulness at losing some "authenticity" in the new CGI effects, the overall product gives the series some new life. There will be those who will prefer to wait until a re-remaster with the old effects, but this interpretation is a fine first attempt at digitally preserving the essence of Star Trek.』

(If they're going to spend all that money on unnecessary "ugrades"...)
『I can appreciate the fact that they took it upon themselves to repair the film where it was damaged. However, they overstepped their bounds and violated this classic by adding effects and shots that were not in the original. And then they could not even put the episodes in order??? Come on!
A perfect example of straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel.』

(going were no insult has gone before)
『I cannot stomach that a wonderful series has been adulterated. If you grew up with the original series, and treasure is original effects, do not buy the new remastered series. I am sorry I did not get a hold of all the seasons in the yellow, red, blue edition. Now they are unavailable and the "orwell" version of revised television history remains. Perhaps this silliness will go the way of colorization of classic movies that came and went in the 1980's. Hopefully』

(Nice)
『Wonderful. Arrived in 4 days. I didn't understand that for my standard DVD player you have to play the disk on the other side, so after freaking out about getting a faulty box, I finally read what it said on the DVD and figured it out. *Picard-style face palm*』
『Space. The Final Frontier. The U.S.S. Enterprise embarks on a five year mission to explore the galaxy. The Enterprise is under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. The First Officer is Mr. Spock, from the planet Vulcan. The Chief Medical Officer is Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy. With a determined crew, the Enterprise encounters Klingons, Romulans, time paradoxes, tribbles and genetic supermen lead by Khan Noonian Singh. Their mission is to explore strange new worlds, to seek new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.』

In 1966,Star Trekset out to boldly go where no series had gone before, beginning a three-year mission that led to a franchise that would last decades. Here at last is the first season of the original series all in one box, 29 episodes in their original broadcast order. That means starting with "The Man Trap," and soon followed by "Where No Man Has Gone Before," the second pilot filmed and the first one starring William Shatner as Captain Kirk. The many highlight episodes include "Balance of Terror" and "Errand of Mercy" (introducing, respectively, the Romulans and the Klingons), the two-part "The Menagerie" (which recycled footage from the original pilot, "The Cage," which featured Christopher Pike as the captain of theEnterpriseand is not included in this set), "Space Seed" (introducing Ricardo Montalban's Khan character), and "The City of the Edge of Forever" (written by sci-fi giant Harlan Ellison and considered by many the best-ever episode of the series).

The first-season DVD set is supplemented by 80 minutes of featurettes incorporating 2003-04 interviews with Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, other cast members, and producers, and some 1988 footage of Gene Roddenberry. The longest (24 minutes) featurette, "The Birth of a Timeless Legacy," examines the two pilot episodes and the development of the crew. Slightly shorter are "To Boldly Go... Season One," which highlights key episodes, and "Sci-Fi Visionaries," which discusses the series' great science fiction writers (most famously in "The City of the Edge of Forever"). Shatner shows off his love of horses in "Life BeyondTrek," and, more interestingly, Nimoy debunks various rumors in "Reflections of Spock." As they've done for many of the feature-film special editions, Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda provide a pop-up text commentary on four of the episodes filled with history, trivia, and dry wit. It's the first commentary of any kind for aStar TrekTV show, but an audio commentary is still overdue. The technical specs are mostly the same as otherTrekTV series--Dolby 5.1, English subtitles--but with the welcome addition of the episode trailers. The plastic case is an attempt to replicate some of the fun packaging of the series' European DVD releases, but it's a bit clunky, and the paper sleeve around the disc case seems awkward and crude. Still, the set is a vast improvement both in terms of shelf space and bonus features compared to the old two-episode discs, which were released before full-season boxed sets became the model for television DVDs.--David Horiuchi

(A Big Disappointment!)
『Being a definitive fan of Laurel and Hardy, and having a special place in my heart for "Babes In Toyland" (aka "March of the Wooden Soldiers"), I was excited to add another version to my DVD collection.

Alas, the colorization from Legend Films is a big disappointment. Already in possession of the excellent 2001 Goodtimes Home Video release, in which the colorization truly does approximate the technicolor look, I feel as though I have wasted my money. As for the black and white print, also included on the DVD, is a much poorer rendering than the pristine black and white version available through MGM Home Video.

The extras on the Legends release are nothing new. They have been included on other L&H releases by other companies, so there is nothing gained there.

Over all, I would suggest that if your heart is set on having a colorized version of this particular feature, stick with the 2001 Goodtimes version. The effect is much more pleasing to those of us wanting a "technicolor" appearence. As for the black and white version, stick with MGM's release. It truly is the best print available.

Sorry, Legend Films. You've missed the mark on this one!』

(A classic!)
『I grew up on the east coast. Every Thanksgiving March of the Wooden Soldiers ran on TV. As a kid this meant that Christmas was coming! Now I get to share this classic movie with my kids.』

(This is a great holiday movie)
『Some like it colored and some don't. Ether way this based on a 1903 Victor Herbert operetta, film released in 1934 as "Babes in Toyland," and is still fun to watch.

Now the basic plot is to keep Mother Peep's (Florence Roberts) shoe from being foreclosed on by the evil landlord Silas Barnaby (Henry Brandon) when this fails Bo Peep has to marry Barnaby to keep the shoe. Now to keep Little Bo Peep from having to marry Barnaby, it involves Barnaby being tricked into marrying Stanley Dum dressed up as Bo in Bo Peep's place. Naturally Barnaby can not be fooled long and must have his revenge by letting lose the bogeymen from their caverns to destroy Toyland.

Does he succeed in his evil ways?
Who can stop him and how?

All in all it is a must to complete the holiday collection.

(A classic movie that brings back tons of memories...)
『One of the many things that made Christmas special in my home as a kid was opening gifts, eating a hearty breakfast and later watching March of the Wooden Soldiers. I'm glad this classic is now offered in DVD format, allowing me to share in those good times with my own family.』

(BEAUTIFUL, BRILLIANT&DISTURBING FEVER-DREAM OF A MOVIE)
『On the far end of the musical movie spectrum is the colorized Laurel and Hardy "MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS." As adapted from Victor Herbert's operetta "Babes in Toyland," there's more of the Holiday Spirit in this 1934 classic than in most of the insipidly lame attempts of movies that exploit the holiday season.

Dum (Stan) and Dee (Ollie) are Santa's toymakers preparing for the big delivery on Christmas eve. Mother Goose and nursery rhyme characters are all over the place and Stan and Ollie are in constant trouble ("Is that 100 six-foot toy soldiers or 600 one-footers?") Silas Barnaby, (remember "the meanest man in town"?), Bo Peep (she's being forced into marriage by Silas or he will evict Bo's mom, who is in fact The Old Woman In The Shoe). And there's Tom Tom the Piper's Son (Ms Peep's true love) and the big finale with the creepy attack of the Bogeymen.

This classic has been cleaned up, digitally remastered and colorized and looks about as perfect as the best of old style children's book illustrations and I bet Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy themselves would want this one in color. It's certainly no sacrilege. This is one beautiful, Fauvistic fever dream of a movie. A weirdly mesmerizing treat.

Laurel and Hardy forever! Let's all love each other, OK?

That said, there is something else to be considered.

For those who dare to read between the lines (or movie frames), this film can be seen as a sly and subversive horror fest that plumbs deeply disturbing psychological and political issues not touched on in contemporary films. I am amazed that someone hasn't examined this in detail and I have often wondered how much of it may have been intentional -- perhaps from the brilliantly demented mind of Stan Laurel. Only on the surface is this a children's movie.』

『Imagine an enchanted fantasy world of timeless characters and magical moments where nothing goes right for toy makers, Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee. Based on the originalBabes in Toyland, this movie is a dazzling spectacle of 6-foot wooden soldiers, Mother Goose characters and the beloved team of Laurel and Hardy. This holiday classic is perfect for the Christmas season. In color and expertly restored, this film will surely become a part of your family holiday tradition.』

(Before there was Harry Potter...)
『Quick, what movie features Britain in turmoil, three young children growing up under the tutelage of a sorceress, invocations of ancient demons and wizards, curse spells, and a modern school of magic that's not what it appears to be? Nope, it's not Harry Potter...it's Bedknobs and Broomsticks!

It's the beginning of World War II and Miss Price (Angela Lansbury, looking suitably spinsterish) has been saddled with three British war orphans: Charlie (Ian Weighill), Carrie (Cindy O'Callaghan) and Paul Rawlins (Roy Snart). Although she prefers to keep to herself, Price has no choice but to take them under her wing, at least until a more proper home can be found for them. As it turns out, Miss Price is a witch, a witch who hopes to help the British war effort if only she can master the final level of her training and thereby learn the spell "substitutiary locomotion."

The three orphans eventually stumble upon her secret. In an unlikely series of deals and skullduggery, Price bargains with the orphans to keep her secret in exchange for some magic, a bed knob that transforms any bed into a dimension-traveling device. Soon after, Price discovers that her tutoring via post from the mysterious Professor Emelius Browne (David Tomlinson), headmaster of the College of Witchcraft, has come to an abrupt end. Using the bed knob, Price and the three children track down Browne, who is in fact a con man that doesn't know much about magic at all.

Thus begins a quest to find the elusive substitutiary spell, first via double-dealings with a bookseller who has the other half of a mysterious spellbook, and then to an animated world of talking animals in pursuit of an amulet with the magic words inscribed upon it. Along the way, the motley band will face down the King of the Beasts, a razor-wielding thug, and of machinegun-toting Nazis.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks shows its age, both in its narrative speed and its approach to mature themes. The musical numbers often meander, with the characters speaking their lines and dance routines that are far too aggressive for the two older protagonists. There are a few misogynistic references (met with a frown by Miss Price) and...well, it's all very British, as it should be. The movie also isn't afraid to threaten the children with real harm, be it from a charging lion or a Nazi wielding a machinegun. Bad people in this movie are really bad, and there's a refreshing honesty about the whole thing.

By the time film gets around to its climax, young children will likely be bored. But what a glorious climax it is, complete with unrealistically numerous legions of animated suits of armor arrayed against the Nazis, who are there to "teach Britain a lesson." Although at times jingoistic, Bedknobs aims high and rarely sugarcoats the harsh realities of war.

This is as much a war film as it is a flight of fantasy, and in that regard Bedknobs and Broomsticks has some important lessons to teach young children. And in that regard, Miss Price and friends could teach Harry Potter a thing or two.

(Good classic Disney DVD)
『The DVD came in very good condition and also in a timely manner.

My daughters used to have the video years ago when they were kids, but my older daughter's three children had never seen it. So we were able to enjoy watching it again with her children and my grandchildren on the DVD.』

(A Disney Classic !)
『Loved this movie as a child, and now enjoy it with my children...
It's magical... !』

(disney classic)
『Classic Disney. Lansbury and Tomlinson are in fine form. We got this for or grandchildren and they loved it.』

(Bednobs and Broomsticks)
『The grandkids loved it and I did too. This is the original version and it was fun to see the actors in their younger days. Dealing with Amazon and the seller could not been easier. Thank you very much.

『Experience the extraordinary animation, enchanting music and Academy Award-winning special effects (1971: Best Effects, Special Visual Effects) of Disney's beloved classic BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS -- now fully restored and remastered in this Enchanted Musical Edition with dazzling new bonus features! Hold on tight for a magical, musical, fun-filled journey! When young Charlie, Carrie and Paul move to a small village during World War II, they discover their host, Miss Price (Angela Lansbury), is an apprentice witch! Although her early attempts at magic create hilarious results, she successfully casts a traveling spell on an ordinary bedknob, and they fly to the fantastic, animated Isle of Naboombu to find a powerful spell that will save England! All-new fun is brewing in this Enchanted Musical Edition, including "The Wizards of Special Effects" feature. Also starring David Tomlinson (MARY POPPINS) and Roddy McDowall, BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS is a heartwarming adventure your family will love sharing again and again!

Bonus Features Include: The Wizards Of Special Effects -- Hosted By Jennifer Stone From Disney's WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE, A Step In The Right Direction Reconstruction, Music Magic -- The Sherman Brothers, David Tomlinson Portobello Road Recording Sessions, Theatrical Trailers』

『When a mail-order apprentice witch (Angela Lansbury) is saddled with three sibling refugees from London during World War II, the outlook is grim. But the kids soon discover her secret and sign on for adventure in the name of England. With the aid of a magical bed, they track down her fraudulent headmaster (David Tomlinson) to find the spell that will aid the Allies. Fascinated that she has actually achieved results with his lessons, he joins forces. The quintet does battle with corrupt booksellers, animated-lion royalty, and, eventually, invading Germans. Songs include Lansbury's Oscar-nominated "The Age of Not Believing." This film is often compared to director Robert Stevenson's earlier effort,Mary Poppins, and for good reason. In addition to Tomlinson, the movies share a fondness for magic at the hands of a good woman, light romance with an understanding male, and wide-eyed children. Stevenson also graces both films with interaction between humans and animated animals. Disney is wise to play up that aspect on its box this time around as both the underwater ball and the subsequent island soccer match are the most visually interesting and appealing parts of the film. Adults may find the 1971-vintage mixing of actors and animation a bit creaky, but kids used to a variety of animation quality will find the action a hoot. Ages 4 and up. The movie has been recut several times but was restored to the original length of 139 minutes for its 30th anniversary in 2001.--Kimberly Heinrichs

(A solid, entertaining adventure for the crew of Red Dwarf.)
『I'll admit I didn't know what to expect from Red Dwarf Back To Earth after so many years of no new productions for this show. I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining this new 77 minute show really is. It's not a return to earlier glory days when creators Grant Naylor wrote the show together and it is more of a "dramedy" as we've come to expect from Naylor writing alone, but it's solidly written with many great comedic as well as poignant moments. I'll stop there because there are many great little twists in the story and I don't want to put any spoilers here.

The commentary tracks and other extra features are terrific. The cast haven't lost a thing and provided terrific performances as they stepped back into character after so many years. As usual, The Cat (Danny John-Jules) turns every tiny line or moment he gets into comedy gold. Craig Charles turns in quite the good dramatic performance at certain moments of the film. Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) and Rimmer (Chris Barrie) are hilariously zany and eccentric as ever. I actually enjoyed this more than many of the season 8 episodes of the show. Recommended!』

(The boys from the dwarf)
『It fun, and a favorite show of this fan. It was great to see the back in character. Thy are looking a bit older now but it was still good fun, fun,fun in the sun, sun ,sun. Bonus features are pretty much what you have come to expect from the DVDs.』

(Great addition to the Red Dwarf compilation)
『Originally saw episodes of this series on a PBS station here in the U.S.; had to see more, was a little disappointed when I found out they were discontinuing Red Dwarf.
Had my hopes up for quite some time for either a movie or U.S. version. After seeing some of the proposals from U.S. broadcasting, I'm glad they didn't go that route. Although, I feel with a little work it would still be feasible and widely accepted especially with the amount of following series like Stargate and other SyFy shows get.
With all that aside, I had received the complete box set as a Christmas present a year ago; have even watched them with my eight year old son who has definitely enjoyed watching them so much so, that I sometimes find the the disks in his room. When I found that they were making a movie length edition in line with the TV episodes I was thrilled. After watching it a couple of times with my son have truly felt this is a great addition to the collection. The only draw back that I noticed is the gap from the TV episodes going through series eight then you jump to "Back to Earth"; the movie is setup as taking place after series 10 and, with only a few references in the movie there is a bit left unexplained; at least for what was released here in the U.S.

In all this is a must have for those who are fans; it's "smeggin" great. And, if you like sci-fi and comedy and have not seen Red Dwarf I'd highly recommend it but, you would need to see most of the original broadcasts to really understand the whole of it.』

(Back th Earth)
『Classic Red Dwarf with twists and turns enough to spin your head around. A total hoot to watch.』

(Back to the Posse)
『Wonderful nostalgia .. I was kind of disappointed with the workings of the plot and disagree with the producers statement that this was one of the dwarf's best story lines but over all it was great to see them back. I missed seeing my favorite girl as part of the posse but at least she passed through along with another sweety (although brief). I recommend this dvd to any dwarfer and wait for a revamp of the series.』
『The boys are back, and while they may be older, they're still none the wiser. The crew discover a dimension-hopping leviathan, but Rimmer is threatened with replacement by the new, improved holograph Katrina. She is determined to guide Lister to his home planet, but no one is prepared for Earth 2009, where the hapless crew face death unless they can track down their creators.

『It was a long time coming, but finally the crew of theRed Dwarfwere reunited for what could be the last time withBack to Earth. And it proved to be a bit of a mixed blessing, with all three parts throwing up moments of absolute genius, alongside parts where you couldn’t help believing that its best days are far behind it. The idea behind the show is quite ingenious.Back to Earthtakes place after the supposed season 10 ofRed Dwarf, and the crew find themselves thrown through a portal, at which time they realize that they’re all just characters from a TV show. Furthermore, they’re characters from a TV show who are going to all buy it in the final episode. The only solution? To track down both the actors that play them (including a trip to the set!), and the creators ofRed Dwarfitself. This opens the door for plenty of postmodern gags and situations, but arguably it’s only when things get back into more familiar territory that they start to gel a little more. And when they work, you can’t help but enjoy the fact that the crew are back together. Will this be the last voyage forRed Dwarf? Quite possibly, and there’s little doubt that it’s far from the show’s peak. But it’s still a fun and entertaining send-off.--Jon Foster

『Love the music, this stage production is top notch. A must have for musical theater fans.』

(Into The Woods - a great take on classic fairy stories)
『Love those good old stories that have been a part of your life since childhood? Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk? Sondheim cleverly and successfully blends several classic fairy tales into one seamless, hilarious story. Spectacular performances by the cast of this live theatre production are supported by an excellent and appropriate score, impressive costumes and great sets. This DVD captures the performance very well, and is a delightful addition to your DVD collection, whether you enjoy classic stories, live theatre, musicals, stage craft, or just plain quirky fun. Highly recommended.』

(Playfully Amazing)
『All your favorite childhood tales wound into a single story. Experience a full range of emotions while you watch this instant classic. This delightful trip down storybook lane will forever be a part of your video collection.』

(Great Show)
『I loved it but it made me nervous to have my 8-year-old in the room with me.』

(Into the Woods)
『The musical is excellent...one of Sondheim best. Very funny and moving at the same time. Everyone from the cast is great especially Bernadette Peters as the witch. You laugh out loud and you are crying at the end.』
『A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and some magic beans to lift a curse that has kept them childless. Tony Award winners Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason and the rest of the original Broadway cast weave their magic spell over you in Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece, directed by James Lapine, a seamless fusion of fairy tale characters and what happens after "happily ever after. "With oft-recorded songs such as "Children Will Listen" and "No One is Alone," "Into the Woods" is a music lover's delight from start to finish--and will forever cement Stephen Sondheim's unparalleled position as the giant of the American musical theater.』
『Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the remarkable context forInto the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of Rod Serling. While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists.

Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning score favors intricate ensemble numbers that present the characters' divergent, then overlapping fears and desires. And it's the latter category that provides a primary thread to James Lapine's ingenious puzzle of a book, which coheres around the inevitability--and treachery--of our innermost wishes. That theme is given farcical energy in the first act, which offers enough comic invention, tart dialogue, and witty music for a satisfying evening of theater as is.

Instead, Sondheim and Lapine offer a bold, darker second act that takes a look at what happensafter"happily ever after," elevating the work beyond inspired parody toward allegorical gravity. By the final scenes, with the one-two punch of the score's two most enduring songs, "No One Is Alone" and "Children Will Listen," what began as a clever diversion has touched deeper nerves and primed some tear ducts. This video production by the original Broadway cast gets its marquee shimmer from Bernadette Peters's wonderful witch, but the standout (and Tony winner as Best Actress) is Joanna Gleason, who gives the Baker's Wife a mixture of warmth, pragmatism, and sudden, poignantly romantic radiance.

The DVD version is comparatively no-frills, given its American Playhouse origins, but multiformat digital audio renders the musical performances in immaculate detail.--Sam Sutherland

(Not a cute film about a mouse for young children)
『This is a G-rated movie, or at least that is the rating provided by the MPAA. It should never have been rated G. The film includes scenes in which the princess, after being betrayed by her handmaiden, is about to be eaten alive by rodents. That's probably the most egregious part; however, there are lots of other similarly disturbing parts - things that will almost certainly be upsetting for younger children.

The overall tenor of the film is very dark. It is NOT a cute, happy movie to give to children. Some other reviewers here claim that it teaches children life lessons; if so, then it should be noted that top among those lessons are: that friends betray you, bad things happen, often for no reason; and that the world is a miserable and lonely place.

Please, don't buy this as a "cute movie" to give to young children.』

(Charming!)
『This movie develops slowly. It doesn't involve catchy songs or eye-catching color. It's an old fashioned story. If you have a child who has the patience to listen, then he/she will enjoy this movie. If your child is use to a lot of slapstick comedy, some action and laughs from the get-go, and every few minutes, he/she will be bored.

The Tales of Despereaux is a movie to envelope yourselves in. A sweet, thought-provoking story to tuck into and appreciate.』

(delightful)
『At age 58 it really touched the inner child in me. I love this movie as well as my 17 year old, grandchildren and it is great when babysitting other children.』

(boring, slow and sinister)
『Do not waste your time. The movie develops very slowly - there is not much going on until the very end. The animation is beautiful and detailed but the story plot and voices are pathetic. I feel sorry for the artists' wasted talent.
The movie is certainly not appropriate for young children due to numerous instances of extreme violence and wickedness. Besides, the movie just lacks energy and focus to keep the little ones interested.』

(Did not live up to expectations)
『Did not live up to expectations, hard for an adult to sit through and watch.』
『THE TALE OF THREE UNLIKELY HEROES - A MISFIT MOUSE WHO PREFERS READING BOOKS TO EATING THEM, AN UNHAPP RAT WHO SCHEMES TO LEAVE THE DARKNESS OF THE DUNGEON&A BUMBLING SERVANT GIRL WITH CAULIFLOWER EARS - WHOSE FATES ARE INTERTWINED WITH THAT OF THE CASTLE'S PRINCESS.』
The Tale of Despereauxlooks a little likeShrek. The storytelling and animation draw on everything fromRatatouilleand classic fairytales to Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift,Indiana Jones, and, in its action sequences, evenBourneandBond. But this movie stands on its own; too dark and violent for very young children, perhaps, but for the most part it’s exciting and funny, and it delivers a message about bravery and forgiveness that is relevant to us all. Voiced by Matthew Broderick, the title character is a little guy, even by mouse standards, with enormous ears and an imagination to match; much to the dismay of his elders, he "never cowers, won’t scurry, and refuses to be taught to be scared" (he’d much rather read a book than eat it, a pursuit that fills his head with visions of valiant knights, damsels in distress, and a life defined by "courage, honor, and decency"). That leads to his being banished from Mouseworld to the realmof the rats, where, it is presumed, he will be eaten. But no. Ratworld--a dark, chaotic, genuinely scary place--happens to be the current residence of one Roscuro (Dustin Hoffman), a peaceful sort whose shenanigans in the human world have accidentally led to the death of the Queen, the imprisonmentof the Princess (Emma Watson), and, worst of all, the banning of Soup Day (no small deal) and the end of soup itself! Roscuro and Despereaux join forces, inadvertently helped out by a homely but soft-hearted farm girl named Miggery Sow (Tracey Ullman), and, well, you can imagine how it all turns out. Directors Sam Fell and Robert Stevenhagen and scriptwriter Gary Ross (adapting Kate DiCamillo’s book) have concocted some vivid and interesting worlds for their film; the look is unusual, often washed out, muted, and bathed in hazy light; and the voice acting is excellent (others include WilliamH. Macy, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci, and Frank Langella). All in all, despite a conclusion that’s confusing even while it’s predictable,The Tale of Despereauxis a worthy addition to the crowded animation field. --Sam Graham

(A Nice "Light" Change in Direction After Such a Dark Season 3)
『This season was like a breath of fresh air after Season Three, which was so dark and gritty and full of angst. This season also marked the entrance of one of the critical figures in the Superman mythos: Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance. She's tough as nails, Tomboy-ish and reminded me a lot of Teri Hatcher, who played the character in Lois and Clark.

We also got to meet Bart Allen, on day to become the Scarlet Speedster, the Flash.

The over-arcing storyline of the season involving the three stones was played out nicely and, when I first saw what they were for, was geeking out all over the place. Of course, the cliffhanger season finale didn't help anything and brought yet another long summer as I waited for the Season Five premiere to show what happened next.

The only episode that bothered me--aside from the few that just seemed like filler--was the episode entitled "Blank," where Clark loses his memory and the most recent person to learn his secret has to show him who he really is and what he can do. They did this in Lois and Clark and this episode almost seemed like a repeat despite the story being different.

This was a great season nonetheless. Superman rocks, and looking back and seeing Season Four in the grand scheme of what had gone on before and what has gone on since makes it work really well. This season definitely was a turning point in the series, the first step in taking Clark from teen to adult.

Go see it.

(Smallville)
『I was very happy with my purchase of season four of Smallville. I bought it for the first appearance of Bart Allen, but ended up enjoying the whole set. Totally worth the money.

Now, if only they would make The Justice League into a series, Life would be good.』

『IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN SMALLVILLE YET FROM START TO FINISH, YOU ARE TRULY MISSING THE BEST TV SERIES EVER CREATED!!! AN ABSOLUTE MUST SEE』
『Clark Kent will have plenty of reasons to remember his senior year! The thrilling reinterpretation of the Superman legend evolves in Season 4, whose 22 episodes include the quest for 3 Kryptonian crystals and Clark's bold attempt to keep those mysterious stones from destroying Earth. Clark also becomes a highly recruited football star. Lana gets a boyfriend. Lois Lane smart, opinionated and entirely annoying to Clark comes to Smallville. Chloe learns the scoop of the century. Lionel becomes a straight-up nice guy. Lex steps further from the light into darkness. New characters (Krypto, Mr. Mxyzptlk) and a new power emerge. The calling awaits Clark an awakening to a destiny that only he can accept and fulfill.

『The arrival of another gorgeous young woman with the initials of LL further complicates Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) life in the fourth season ofSmallville, the WB's hip and sexy reinvention of the Superman legend. In this case, it's Lois Lane (Erica Durance), a would-be college freshman who's come to the Kansas heartland to investigate the disappearance of her cousin, Chloe. What she discovers instead is a naked, amnesiac Clark Kent in a cornfield, and things take off from there. Durance doesn't appear in every episode--she was credited as a "special guest star"--but her tough spirit and crackling wit provide a great, non-romantic foil to Clark.

That's just as well, because there's plenty of romantic triangulation--or worse--going on. Clark's former love interest--and his first LL--Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), has returned from her summer in Paris sporting a new boyfriend, Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles), as well as a mysterious tattoo that seems to have something to do with a set of Kryptonian crystals as well as Jason's sinister mom, Genevieve (Jane Seymour). Keeping his relationship with Lana a secret, Jason has signed on as Smallville High's new assistant football coach. What's surprising is that the team's new quarterback is none other than Clark, who's grown tired of hiding his super-strength, super-speed, and invulnerability and wants to be part of the team. But nothing's easy for Clark, and he goes through the prom, a marriage, and fatherhood, not necessarily in that order, as well as his secret being discovered, unknown to him, by one of his closest friends. (On the plus side, he does uncover a cool new power.)

But the key to the season is the Kryptonian crystals. They further deteriorate the relationship between the incarcerated Lionel Luthor (John Glover), and his son, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Lex may be Clark's best friend, but he reveals more of his dark side in a revelation about his sexual escapades and a split-personality (literally) incident. Lana's frightening dreams actually come to life in a sillyCharmed-type episode. Then in the explosive season finale, the main characters are scattered and another meteor shower threatens to wipe out the town.

One of the fun things aboutSmallvilleis how producers Al Gough and Miles Millar and their team of writers acknowledge their place in a 70-year Superman mythos (even if Clark is never referred to as Superman). His DC Comics origins receive a nod with appearances by the Flash, Krypto the superdog, and the magical Mxyztplk. And the cast includes not only regular Annette O'Toole (Martha Clark), who had played Lana Lang inSuperman III, but guest shots by Margot Kidder (Bridgette Porter) and Terence Stamp (the voice of Jor-El), and the late Christopher Reeve gets a brief but touching farewell in an announcement of the passing of his character, Dr. Virgil Swann.

Extras include 15 minutes with the writing team, a spotlight on Kidder, Durance, and others who have played Lois Lane, deleted scenes, and three episodes with commentary from combinations of Gough, Millar, Durance, Kreuk, Glover and others, but not Welling.--David Horiuchi
