(Wonderfully informative and entertaining)
『I had never seen the original 'What the Bleep' and ordered it and Down The Rabbit Hole at the same time, not understanding that this one include a greatly enhanced version of the original. Oh well that's fine. The movie itself if great and well worth the price by itself. But for me, I love the B sides filled with extensive interviews with all the scientists and guests. I appreciated the fact that not everyone shared the same opinions and to a great extent approached the subject from a variety of viewpoints. I like the variety the set provides. First the extended version of the original movie. Then the 2nd version allows you to select a wide variety ways to view it such as minimizing the drama portions and/or selecting 9 levels of depth in the interview portions, and then the B Sides with the great interview and in-depth explanations. The 2nd version that allows you to customize the way you want to view it, does, as the intro explains, depend on the quality of you DVD player. Mine is about a cheap as they come but in the worst case as it jumps around assembling the sequences you select there are sometimes a couple of seconds delay in the audio syncing up but that's very minor. I've watched the whole version a couple of times and the customizable version 3 or 4 time but I've watched the interviews 9 or 10 times and still enjoy them and each time I gain a little more understanding. Unless you're absolutely and completely closed minded and refuse to allow yourself to 'think' an original thought you'll love this movie.』

(Mind blowing)
『If you are into the mysterious as well as science, this movie is for you. It may take a couple of times watching the movie for the whole thing to sink in, but once the information is digested, it will open your eyes to possibilities, such that you may feel you were blind up to this point. The extended interviews are also great because the original movie does not have enough time to go into details.』

(Spirit&Science Interface)
『This is actually my second copy - one disc from my first DVD set became damaged, therefore, I ordered it again. (THAT'S HOW MUCH I ENJOYED IT.)

I remember reading reviews the first time I ordered it. I was shocked and amazed by those who gave it low ratings, and would justify that rating by attacking and tearing apart minutiae details used to illustrate an idea being presented, (e.g., the story of the Native Americans being unable to see the Spanish ships approaching the coast, etc.) Some of the reviews included what seemed to be an attempt at character assassination of some of the spokespersons in the movie.

My first viewing was the theatrical release version - to which I reacted with awe and wonder. Then, I watched the hyper-extended version - MORE awe and wonder. It seemed as if most of the negative reviews were based mostly on the theatrical released version. Many of the criticisms revolved around an idea that the film was somehow attempting to indoctrinate its viewers to some religion or cult.

My opinion - nothing could be further from the truth about this film. If anything, many of the discussions and scenes presented actually were highly critical of traditional religions and the way they are typically practiced, pointing out how most religions fall very short of providing any real meaning or insight to its followers. There was ABSOLUTELY NO SINGLE RELIGION OR SPIRITUALITY THAT WAS PRESENTED, IN BOTH VERSIONS OF THE MOVIE, THAT WAS PROMOTED AS THE END-ALL AND BE-ALL TO RELIGION OR SPIRITUALITY. If anything, this movie encouraged the viewer to question religion.

Interwoven with the above, the movie gave the viewer a crash course in quantum mechanics to bring one up to speed on our current understanding, and did this using various examples, including a clever cartoon about Professor Quantum in "Quantum World", helping the layperson to understand its basic principles. It also reviewed some quandaries in physics, such as "reversal-time symmetry" that still baffle physicists today. I felt it did a great job in explaining the history of Dualism, and how it split human understanding of our universe into the "seen" and "unseen", or clock-work mechanistic world versus a spiritual world.

And finally, the main theme of the movie is presented, i.e., that our knowledge of physics and the physical world actually does allow for Free Will and spirituality, and that the world is not as mechanistic, or deterministic, as it may seem. In the end, the movie leaves the viewer feeling more empowered, spiritual, and self-confident in one's own consciousness than previously, but without any sense of being manipulated into one religion or another.』

(The Truth)
『For those who possess knowledge AND wisdom, this video will be incredibly easy to understand and accept, make no mistake this series is highly scientific not pseudo-scientific. As for those who only possess knowledge alone without wisdom (wisdom is the common sense necessary to apply knowledge), they will inevitably/instantly demonize or discredit this video without question or second thought, unfortunate but true.
People fail to realize that modern day science is blinded by limitations and it is a FACT, for those willing enough to pay attention to details or smart enough to realize it, that science fiction is constantly becoming reality and constantly pushes science forward. That being said, this video does not present science fiction, it presents reality.』

(Quantum Physics)
『This will open up ones brain knowledge and physical possibilities and gives one a reason to quit all habits we learned. The new way of living today in our tech world. Give yourself the gift! What the Bleep Do We Know!?』
『WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW?! is a new type of film. It is part documentary, part story, and part elaborate and inspiring visual effects and animations. The protagonist, Amanda, played by Marlee Matlin, finds herself in a fantastic Alice in Wonderland experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality. She is literally plunged into a swirl of chaotic occurrences, while the characters she encounters on this odyssey reveal the deeper, hidden knowledge she doesn?t even realize she has asked for. Like every hero, Amanda is thrown into crisis, questioning the fundamental premises of her life ? that the reality she has believed in about how men are, how relationships with others should be, and how her emotions are affecting her work isn?t reality at all!』
『The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 wasWhat the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about... well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it. Talking heads (not identified until film's end) include JZ Knight, who appears in the movie channeling Ramtha, the ancient sage she claims communicates through her (other speakers are also associated with Knight's organization). What she says actually makes pretty good common sense--Ramtha's wiggier notions are not included--and would be easy to accept were it not being credited to a 35,000-year-old mystic from Atlantis.--Robert Horton

(Good buy)
『This collection was awesome. Made our Halloween so much fun. Affordable too! Very quick shipping!』

(Good deal for great flicks)
『I love the dvds, and the box set was a lot cheaper then I imagined it would be. My only complaint is that two of the cases were broken (the little circle thing that hold the discs in place)so I have to be careful with the them. That frustrated me (i'm a little OCD about discs) but everything else was good』

(A "fun" nightmare!)
『I ordered this set of "Nightmare on Elmstreet" to share with my family. I am a product of the 80's, and back then, these movies were the best way to get scared! Watching them again brought back great memories and was still a fun way to get scared!』

(Nightmare on elm street set)
『I am a fan of the nightmare on elm street movies; I would recommend purchasing this box set, all movies are in wide screen, and have optimal sound quality. My favorite the nightmare on elm street movies would have to be the first 2 movies. I like the first, which is directed by Wes Craven. All the nightmare on elm street movies have great special effects, and Robert Englund as Freddy Kreuger, I think revolutionized a new era in the term slasher flicks. If your a fan if 80's slasher films then the nightmare on elm street movies are a good bet that you will enjoy one of the greatest franchises in slasher films. By purchasing the whole entire box set, minus Freddy vs' Jason, Freddy Kreuger is in a league of his own, along with Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, in the term slasher films, watch them over and over again you will be glad you did.The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection』
『For two generations Freddy Krueger has scared the dickens out of movie goers. Now the most-dreamed-about name in horror history can be seen from beginning to end in this must-have collection.

『In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers ofHalloween), the son (Jason ofFriday the 13thfame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of theNightmare on Elm Streetfilms. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of theNightmare on Elm Streetseries were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, butsixmore sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion inScreamthat the firstNightmarefilm was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment,Dream Warriors(starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film,The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film,New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of theScreamfilms and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare.--Mark Englehart

(my favorite movie)
『this is my favorite movie of all time..its so romantic and...it happenned to me so i love it cuz i could relate to it! it came on tine and looks great so i will be buying again...』

(It was wonderful!!1)
『I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The picture was clear&it was free of any defects.』

(Disappointing)
『For me, it's difficult to enjoy a film that is all about a "chase scene". There's very little development and not much to get attached to. I felt the same way about "Only You". While it's a cute premise, I'd hoped for more.』

(serendipity)
『The dvd arrived earlier than I had expected. It was in good shape. Thank you.』

(Serendipity, the movie about wasted time&sullen souls)
『I consider myself an equal opportunity viewer of cinema, I will watch just about anything. In contrast, I won't watch everything in the movie theater. Therefore I can remember seeing the trailer for this movie in the theater and thinking "This movie looks stupid" and "money was spent to make this tomfoolery"? Then some years later "Serendipity" was on cable and figured why not give it a shot. I am not the biggest fan of romantic comedies, but every once in awhile there is a diamond in the rough. This movie was no diamond, but was rough to watch.

When watching a movie I try to identify with the main character(s). I attempt to do this by relating their situations to an experience I might have encountered. Or if I have some sort of investment in what the character's grapples, goals and/or endeavors are then I want to see where the story will take them. This movie failed to satisfy either of my identification ruses.

The entire concept of this movie is asinine, guy and girl meet. They share an unexpected evening of "serendipity". They are two strangers that bump into each other and manage to share themselves with one and other. This is done by just speaking to each other and attempting to uncover where the other one is coming from. There is no sex, or one night stand, just a sweet moonlight, chilly night in New York. As the night comes to a close, Sara (Kate Beckinsale) gives her phone number to Jonathan (John Cusack) on a piece of paper. The paper flies away in the wind and Jonathan asks if she can give him the number again. Sara says no and that it is part of serendipity. She then writes her name and phone number in a book and alludes to if he can find this book, he can contact her. Jonathan is standing there befuddled while Sara walks away. Let's play devil's advocate, is it not serendipity that two random people met in New York and felt a connection instantaneously?

So now it is like ten years later, or something and both Sara and Jonathan are living different lives. (It is even funnier that Sara became a psychiatrist given the insight she lives her life by.) In the back of both of their minds they wonder what could have been had that night so many moons ago worked out differently. There isn't much more to it, a series of pratfalls and mishaps, not to mention that both Sara and Jonathan are engaged to other people but still infatuated with one and other. These smitten vibes are present despite that fact they only met once all the years ago and don't even know each other's last name. Nevertheless this being a romantic comedy it isn't too difficult to figure out how it would end. The acting is usually fair for this type of movie and the overall impression was sort of flat. The introduction to this movie was so acerbic that it really destroyed the rest of the film for me. The entire premise seems so, I don't know avoidable.

I realize not everyone shares my point of view (which is a good thing) but if I met a woman and had a wonderful night. A night that was unexpected, mind you, and we both felt a connection, a conduit that goes much deeper than carnal urges, because true intimacy can be a precious thing. Then she gives me her phone number only for the wind to blow it away and my request for her number again ends with "its serendipity", I would say "you've got to be kidding me" or "thanks for ending this relationship before we went any further" maybe "I have already dated my fair share of borderline woman, I'll pass" another retort "got to go, TNT has a James Bond marathon on".

I suppose it is just me, but this movie shows two people who could have been happy and spend multiple years miserable by choice. When this movie was over I felt really depressed and longing for a Tom and Jerry cartoon.』

『Irresistible stars John Cusack (AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS, HIGH FIDELITY) and Kate Beckinsale (PEARL HARBOR, BROKEDOWN PALACE) are drawn together and take a chance on love in this critically acclaimed romantic comedy! In the course of one magical evening, Jonathan (Cusack) and Sara (Beckinsale) meet unexpectedly ... then part without expectation when she decides they must let fate determine if they are meant to be together. Years later, they are both engaged to others but cannot give up the dream that -- despite time, distance, and the obstacles that conspire to keep them apart -- they will one day meet again. Also starring Jeremy Piven (THE FAMILY MAN, VERY BAD THINGS) and Molly Shannon (SUPERSTAR, NEVER BEEN KISSED) in a stellar supporting cast -- you're destined to agree with audiences everywhere who fell for the surprising charms of this delightful big-screen romance!』
『The irresistible casting of John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale highlights this predictable romantic comedy, which combines the romantic yearning ofAn Affair to Rememberand the New York charm ofYou've Got Mail. It all begins "a few years ago," when New Yorker Jonathan (Cusack) meets Brit beauty Sara (Beckinsale). They share a few perfect hours together before parting ways, leaving future encounters to her quirky obsession with fate. "A few years later," they're about to marry their respective fiancés (reluctantly, of course), and urgently hoping for destiny to bring them back together. Under the casual direction of Peter Chelsom (barely recovering fromTown&Country), this starry-eyed romance offers no surprises, but it has a comforting familiarity, made warmer by the easy chemistry of the leads, with obligatory best-friend support by Molly Shannon and long-time Cusack pal Jeremy Piven. It's hokey, but die-hard romantics are sure to be forgiving.--Jeff Shannon

(Best Comedy/Drama Vampire Movie)
『After all of these years, this movie still makes me laugh....I still think that the two Corey's should have remained friends. Two bad they couldn't keep it together for the sequel. I was living in Houston the time this movie came out. Going to the Art Institute living on macaroni and cheese. This movie was always an escape for me. Even though the two son's in the movie were exposed to such danger, I still wanted to trade places with them and live this adventure. It's a fun film and I really enjoyed the chemistry between the actor's. They should be very proud of their performances and there is no doubt that this was the movie that launched quite a few careers. Big Bites and blood squirts....oh, and laughter.』

(A Classic!)
『I grew up on this movie and no matter how corny it would be if it was made today, it still stands up as a fantastic movie: a classic!
The acting is still great, the storyline is great, and the comedy is still funny!』

(Pretty good movie)
『This was a pretty good movie, a little odd but good and I liked the actors they had chosen.』

(Never Lost Boys)
『Flat out, the Blu-ray version of this classic movie is amazing, the picture and sound is as if this movie was just filmed. If you loved the movie back then, you will love it even more now....this is a no-brainer on blu-ray』

(Amazing Movie)
『The product was in the condition described. It was delivered very quickly, it plays great and I would definitely order from this seller again.』
『Strange events threaten an entire family when two brothers move with their divorced mother to a California town where the local teenage gang turns out to be a pack of vampires. Director: Joel Schumacher Actors: Jason Patric, Keifer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Diane Wiest, Jami Gertz』
『This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons, and granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. InStand by Mehe played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bullyvampirewho leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay.--Jeff Shannon

(Way better than the 1939 version)
『This movie is probably the only live-action (I'm not counting live action/animation)Disney film that is dark, but awesome. It's more attached to the books than the sugar-coated 1939 version ever was. If L.Frank Baum was alive in the 1980's, then he would have loved this movie.
(spoilers)
Probably the scariest scene in the entire movie is when she is trying to get the powder of life from one of Mombi's cases. She's about to get it, and then this happens:
Mombi:Dooorthy Gaaale!
Heads from various women begin to scream as the real headless Mombi rises from her bed. Dorothy quickly grabs the powder of life and runs like there's no tomorrow.

This movie is so underrated and it's much better than the films these days, like those High School Musical crap (where are the goths, nerds, pregnant teens, and rapper-wannabees?) and Twilight (sorry, but I really hate these books/movies).

If you want a good fantasy film, go with this one. Enjoy!』

(The dark side of OZ...)
『An instant classic! Released the year I was born (1985) and remaining STILL one of my favorite films of all time, I was born to collect Oz memorabilia. I feel that this was a film that people really threw to the side and dis honed it. It never really got it's full true debut-which makes me sad. People seem to compare this, just cause it was a sequel, to the 1939 classic. It has NOTHING to do with is at all-it's a film that stands on it's own two feet. Created and written to follow the true spirit and imagination of L. Frank Baum's Oz books, it truly did just that. This is a cult classic and will remain that forever! I am a HUGE Oz fan and "Return" has the key to my heart and everything I have loved, read, and dreamed about Oz! Sure, it's a little too dark and sometimes a little scary, but I think it was made to be just that. A darker side of Oz. What really surprises me is that it was made from Walt Disney. I know that Disney has always been interested in making an Oz film, but I just wish that they would have made so much more of an effort to support it. Sometimes when I mention to people about "Return" they don't know it even exists. I'm like "WHAT!" How could they have never seen this film. Such a shame to have missed out on this childhood film. Everything about this is magical-the characters, actors, costumes, and story! Magic! Find a copy of this (sometimes really hard to find)Buy it, and sit back for a different path down the yellow brick road! Make a trip to "Return To Oz!"』

(This movie is in our darkest nightmares...and our greatest dreams)
『At best, people understand in retrospect that this movie gets a bad rap, simply because of it's connections to Disney and lack of Disney-fied elements. That Disney shut down production of this movie three times during the making of it and then failed to market it to the "appropriate" audience. It was released at the same time as Back to the Future, Out of Africa, and the Breakfast Club. It failed at the box office and is seen to have the same kind of followers as the Dark Crystal and Star Wars. As I mentioned before Disney had absolutely no participation in the actual production and had little knowledge of what a "dark, haunting, and fantastical" movie it was. And yes, despite it's many homages and references to it, it is "NOTHING LIKE THE 1939 CLASSIC"....but...SO WHAT?

To those who actually saw the film and attempted to make comparisons to the 1939 "original", I say you have no right to even share your dissatisfaction. This movie was made just shy of the 50th anniversary of the original release and is therefore completely separate; even in it's attempts to sequel it! How dare film makers make a dark film geared towards children, only Tim Burton is allowed to do that!

As a very young child I was privy to see the 50th anniversary documentary about the "chaos, confusion, and terror" that went on behind the scenes of the MGM flick. While I was captured by the movie itself, I was even more intrigued by the amount of dedication, toil, and tears that went into it. Because of that early dose of reality to this day I see it as retro nostalgia of epic proportions; a beautifully scored train-wreck. To the dismay of fellow movie-goers/film buffs, I love it as much as I despise it. Despite the fact that I still nod to the original cast for their immense talent and ingenuity, I have reconciled to the fact that the entire OZ empire is ironically a complete sham. The man behind the curtain has been revealed. This point proven to me even more by the recent re-release of their NEW REMASTERED BLU RAY DVD AND ALL THE NEW PRETTY SHINYS THAT COME WITH!

It is this pandering and sugar-coating, that made some of us yearn,no- ache, for something like Return to OZ. I will explain why with details too vague to be considered spoilers.

The audience of the original film that was captivated and intrigued as I was, were just as equally captivated by a movie so separate from it. For those who enjoy fantasy films, and are children of the eighties, we have been given many new worlds to explore, ones that our parents could hardly dream of. Once we are apart of this new world, we want to understand it in a deeper way. We want it to always be there for us, to know we always belong there. This is the essence of Return to OZ.

What audiences of this movie would want to remember in viewing this, though I cannot imagine how it is lost on them, is that OZ is a world that exists in the mind of a child. Even the "original" Dorothy can only arrive in OZ with a swift bump on the head. Once she is there, however, this world is to the child what she desires it to be; whether it comforts her, illuminates her, challenges her, frightens her, or empowers her. This is her world.
The world in which she actually exists, one just as dark and frightening, is not her world. This is a universal theme that should be experienced by young children, despite the many elements that may make many parents uneasy.

To ease those parents, I suggest they concentrate on the many wonderful educational experiences their child will receive from this film. First, it should be considered as a period film. Kansas: the dress, the mentality, the family dynamic, the living conditions, etc. are all very true to the time the books were written and were something as a child that I found fascinating (something the original is lacking). Second, the musical score is distinctly instrumental, but breathtakingly beautiful and engaging to any child or adult. Third, the story of friendship and loyalty goes beyond helping your friend find their brain and is wrapped up in themes of memory, love, forgiveness, charity, protection, appreciation, gratitude, accountability, the list goes on...

Finally, if you are still not convinced that this movie deserves 5 stars...I suggest giving it another go...or showing it to a lonely nine year old brunette girl, and see how she reacts to it.

(Best fantasy movie ever)

So I just had to get a copy to show all my nieces and nephews.
This is not the type of movie to purchase if you are looking for something like the Wizard of OZ, or other Disney movies...cause it is soooo diffferent.
BUT ,this is definitely the movie to watch if you just want to see a good fantasy movie---think along the lines of Pans Labyrinth, the neverending story, or Willow.
It is Disney's best movie EVER besides "Watcher in the Woods"---anybody remember that???
Call me crazy but I was one of those kids that actually liked getting freaked out!!
ANyway, I totally LOVE this movie and think it is a must have for anybody who like CLASSIC- ORIGNAL and TIMELESS movies!!

I cant wait to get it to show my neices and nephews next time I babysit them and they "ACT UP"!
HA HA HA!!!!!

(A fun Oz story)
『I enjoyed this movie! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed L. Frank Baum's Oz books!』
『If you loved THE WIZARD OF OZ, you'll love accompanying Dorothy on this second thrilling adventure based on L. Frank Baum's "Oz" books! Dorothy finds herself back in the land of her dreams ... and makes delightful new friends (like Tik Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Gump) ... and dangerous new enemies (the creepy Wheelers, the head-hunting Princess Mombi, and the evil Nome King). With every twist in the yellow brick road, you'll find awesome new surprises and special effects that will astound you!』
『You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remakeCasablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the author of the originalOzbooks, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.

Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films.--Doug Thomas

(Harry Potter Succesfully Apparates into Movies)
『Let me just assure everyone that I have read the book of this movie and am not a government spy bent on brainwashing people to love terrible movies. I must confess though I watched this movie before I read the book and I could actually tell what was going on. The plot works very well, picking the best parts out of a book and making slight adaptations is not an easy spell but the movie makers get an O for this. They clearly defined the plot and did a good job of explaining the story to non-readers. I confess though when I saw the movie I was suddenly possesed with a determination to hate the series and kept a broad distance from it. But suddenly I found myself in desperate need to bring my school reading grade up so reluctantly picked this book up. Reading it I could remember some things from the movie I had viewed so long ago and found some unsavory parts that I felt were fixed in the movie. After reading the book I decided to watch the movie and found to my amazement that I loved it even more than the book. It brought me fully into the series then any of the books could've Since then I have been a Harry Potter fan and have read every book.

Now enough about that story which was made to make you feel sorry for me and think of me as a legitamant source. I thought the acting was very well done. Harry potter as portrayed very well by Daniel Radcliffe, though I do find very suspicous that he shares the last name of the producer hmmm... Oh well all's well that ends well, he was good. The actors who play the other roles were excellent as well. but the actor who shined among the rest was Richard Harris. He was truly made that role and I always felt relaxed and felt as if he was actually trying to impart the wisdom to all of us as well as to Harry. He delivered the earwax gag excellently and I laughed so hard. The special effects are also amazing. The spells looked so real I almost thought that wizards did exist. I really have no complaints for the movie and think it was a perfect adaptation of the book.

Now as for the bonus materials, that's another story in itself. Navigating the Hagwarts corridors, buying your own wand, and looking for the Sorcerors Stone sounds a hundred times more appealing then it really is. It can only be described by one thing, a tedious excuse for a bonus disk. Instead of saying ; here's the deleted scenes, here's the bloopers, you have to navigate the badly represented Hogwarts grounds, in order to find the simplest of things. If I want a badly made video game I'll go to Sega thank you very much. But the DVD's good so it evens out. Good work keep it up!』

(Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone)
『This is the movie that set the tone for the series. It is a masterful piece of directing--adapted from J. K. Rowling's book. The actors were well-cast for their roles and aside from the children, I think Snape's character is the best. After wearing out my VHS copy of this movie, I'm happy to now have the DVD version.』

(If you like Harry Potter, this is a no brainer)
『This is a great series. The books and movies are all extremly well done. I got this for my 6 year old after we read the first book. It's a great addition to my HP library and I'm sure will be watched many times.』

(I'm Not One To Complain About A Long Movie But Man This Was Long)
『The first film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's popular books. I like it but it feels overly long. In one of the few movies with a primarily young cast that actually have brilliant performances, each capturing the essence of the characters from the books. The leads are definitely the highlights of the film and have continued to get better. What helps I think is that they're surrounded by vetern actors Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters etc. much like Christopher Reeve was in the first Superman. My main complaint on what keeps this from getting a full five stars is that the director is trying to literally adapt the book. True there are sections and characters missing like Peeves the Poltergeist, the sub-plot of Ron (or someone else, I can't remember exactly who right now) telling Neville to stand up for himself (which would explain why stands up to the threesome near the end but I guess not wanting his house to lose anymore points is a good enough reason) and the midnight duel with Malfoy, which in the book, leads Harry and the others to Fluffy, not walking in there by mistake after the staircase changes. But some scenes could've been trimmed. The Quidditch scene, Harry and Ron being late for Transfiguration and the goblins scene in Gringotts. I think they could've just cut to Harry and Hagrid arriving at his vault after Hagrid points and tells Harry about the wizarding bank but then again that's just my opinion. John Williams provides the music again and its good but I think its not up to his usual quality like the other films of his I've reviewed. I know he's going for the fantasy aspect in some cues but I just don't like it. Even the actions sequences feel boring. And is it just me or, besides the scene in the reptile house, does Harry not perform any magic in this movie?』

(Harry Potter fan)
『The dvd was brand new and fast on the shipping! It made my niece very happy! Thank you!』
『In this enchanting film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's delightful bestseller, Harry Potter learns on his 11th birthday that he is the orphaned first son of two powerful wizards and possesses magical powers of his own. At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. He learns the high-flying sport Quidditch and plays a thrilling game with living chess pieces on his way to face a Dark Wizard bent on destroying him. For the most extraordinary adventure, see you on platform nine and three quarters!』
『Here's an event movie that holds up to being an event. This filmed version ofHarry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, adapted from the wildly popular book by J.K. Rowling, stunningly brings to life Harry Potter's world of Hogwarts, the school for young witches and wizards. The greatest strength of the film comes from its faithfulness to the novel, and this new cinematic world is filled with all the details of Rowling's imagination, thanks to exuberant sets, elaborate costumes, clever makeup and visual effects, and a crème de la crème cast, including Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and more. Especially fine is the interplay between Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his schoolmates Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), as well as his protector, the looming Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane). The second-halfadventure--involving the titular sorcerer's stone--doesn't translate perfectly from page to screen, ultimately because of the film's fidelity to the novel; this is a case of making a movie for the book's fans, as opposed to a transcending film. Writer Steve Kloves and director Chris Columbus keep the spooks in check, making this a true family film, and with its resourceful hero wide-eyed and ready, one can't wait for Harry's return. Ages 8 and up.--Doug Thomas

("It's got electrolytes!")
『How do you do a satire about the increasing stupidity of people? In other words, how do you do a documentary about modern society?

It isn't really true that people are becoming less intelligent, but rather that they are increasingly more-poorly educated. By educated, I mean being aware of the world around them and what's going on in it, especially in areas outside their jobs, and beyond the borders of their country. (You can blame the revival of religious fundamentalism for part of this. If you know you're going to be saved, why worry about what's going on at this level of existance?)

I've ruined my own life, and am, in many respects, am an insufferably stupid person. But it was only the election of George W. Bush that made me realize just how stupid human beings are. This is a man not much brighter than the people of "Idiocracy", ignorant, uneducated, and seemingly proud of it.

I have little interest in rock, but was wildly impressed with the way "Beavis&Butt-head" so unflinchingly catalogued the decline of Western civilization (or American society, at least). "Idiocracy" nicely expands Mike Judge's growing catalog of that decline.

Idiocracy's conceit is that, as stupid people are more likely to have children than intelligent people, the world's population will inevitably move in the direction of total dunderheadedness. This is not genetically plausible (ever heard of "reversion to the mean"?), and it's contradicted by the presence of a lot of high-technology hardware, but no mind. The point is that the idea isn't as important as what you do with it. And Judge does plenty.

The richness of Judge's "confederacy of dunces" is striking. Particularly notable is the utter vulgarity of social behavior, as if one of the fundamental elements of stupidity is a lack of respect and common courtesy. And anyone who speaks clearly is a fag.

Judge's direction is spot-on. It would have been so easy to play the characters as caricatures, but our future selves are believably stupid and self-absorbed. There's never any sense that we're seeing actors /pretending/ to be dumb (qv, of Jack Nicholson in "Prizzi's Honor" or Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man"). Dax Shepard, as Frito, Joe's incompetent attorney, gives a truly remarkable performance that, in a just world, would have gotten him an Oscar nomination.

At a terse 84 minutes, "Idiocracy" ends before wearing out its welcome. And Judge's dystopia is so richly imagined that you'll have to watch two or three times, your finger poised over the pause button, to catch everything.

It is no surprise that Fox showed this film in five theaters, then pulled it. Granted, preview audiences hated it. Does that prove anything? Well, it shows that Fox management is even more stupid than the preview audienes.

My highest recommendation. Unreseveredly recommended.』

(dumb)
『Although I fear the premise for this movie is true the movie itself wasn't worth watching.』

(The Sad Truth)
『The sad truth is that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket (whatever a hand-basket is,) and here we sit watching it go. All the while we are thinking that someone else is taking care of it so that it doesn't happen. But who are we to rely on...really? The government? The avaricious corporate executives and the ever-greedy companies they represent? The car companies? The power companies? Wall Street advisers? Nope, none of them. Because this, my friends, is a world of self-indulgence. Look at the salaries of baseball players, and then try to argue otherwise. Look at how much a large portion of "no talent" actors (like Miley Cyrus) bring home while the vast majority of the U.S. population live vicariously through them, and then tell me that this economy isn't screwed up nine ways to blue hell!

"Idiocracy" paints a picture. A picture of reality that is probably closer in the future than the 500 years depicted in the movie. It is a picture of a world that has fallen apart...fallen apart due to greed, insecurity, vanquished self-esteem, and pure idiocy! Through all the funny stuff here, i.e.; site gags, blank looks, and witty quips, the underlying message shines like a beacon on a moonless night. This movie is a valuable lesson just as much as it is a comedy.

Heed the message.
Love the movie.

FIVE STARS! *****』

(Sadly it isn't taking five hundred years)
『Imagine a world where the government goes in debt to destroy perfectly good cars. Imagine a world where the government tries to take over healthcare and when the over-a-thousand-pages bill fails to gain traction, they replace it with a bill just shy of two thousand pages and think it's an improvement, and we can't read it to save our lives, even though we may have to some day. Imagine utopia created by printing money. OOPS, that's what our federal government is doing!

Imagine a city where they paint bike trail signs on the pavement down the middle of arterial streets to encourage bikers (the pedal variety) to bike in with traffic. OOPS, that's where I live!

Imagine a school system where the teachers, who get paid in US money and have the American flag flying over the building, have the kindergarteners singing John Lennon's "Imagine" and imagining their country away. OOPS, that's reality for me!

I really belive that about half our citizenry simply doesn't know what it takes to have a civilization, and they don't care that they don't know. And a huge segment of those people actually are stupid enough to romanticize how great it would be if it all went away.

So, after that rant I'll say that even with the crass, vulgar, and potty humor that I usually don't gravitate towards I just had to sigh and think "right on" when this movie was over. It just seems to be coming true even more quickly than Mike Judge imagined. Maybe more like 2105.

I expected a low budget movie, so I was rather pleasantly suprised at the matte paintings and some genuine attempts to show what our society would look like after a few more centuries of decline. Basically, a culture of people with the intellectual capacity of cave-people running on the last fumes of the civilization they inherited. So, the sets and effects were actually better than I expected, and the actors did pretty fair job too. And, there are enough sight gags and things that go by really fast that it would stand up to a repeat viewing.

This isn't a perfect movie or even close, but I'm surprised it didn't get a wider audience, but was rather an anomaly that I just stumbed into and decided to watch. If only it wasn't so close to being a documentary.

(Sometimes the Truth is Funny)
『What can you say about this movie? Is it satire if it is really true? As someone who works on the Labor and Delivery ward, there is more truth in this film than most people want to believe. Funny movie! Watch it and see where the world is heading.』
『From Mike Judge, one of the creative minds behind Beavis and Butt-Head, King of the Hill and Office Space, comes an outrageous sci-fi comedy that'll make you think twice about the future of mankind.

Meet Joe Bowers (Luke Wilson). He's not the sharpest tool in the shed. But when a government hibernation experiment goes awry, Bowers awakens in the year 2505 to find a society so dumbed-down by mass commercialism and mindless TV programming that he's become the smartest guy on the planet. Now it's up to an average Joe to get human evolution back on track!

Filled with razor-sharp sarcasm and outrageous sight gags, Idiocracy will make you laugh out loud whether you're an absolute genius or a complete idiot!』
『Given thatOffice Spaceis a bona fide cult classic, it comes as some surprise that Mike Judge's follow-up wasn't more heavily promoted. Granted, this live-action comedy is a darker, more pointed proposition, but it's unfortunate that few theater patrons got the opportunity to, well, judge for themselves. InIdiocracy, theKing of the Hillcreator visualizes what would happen if Devo's proposition--that mankind is in the process of devolution--came to pass. The catalyst: the overeducated start having fewer children while the undereducated have more. Enter Joe (Luke Wilson), a military librarian with no family and even less ambition. The Pentagon chooses him for a top-secret hibernation project due to his extreme "average-ness." They select Rita (SNL's Maya Rudolph), a prostitute, for the same reason. When the experiment goes haywire, the two emerge 500 years later--rather than one. Now it's 2505 and they're the brightest people in the over-polluted land. Everyone else is, basically, Beavis and Butt-head. Yes, the satire couldn't be less subtle, but the premise gives Judge license to make as much fun of junk food pop culture as dystopian classics like1984andPlanet of the Apes. Wilson wisely plays it straight, even if the actors who surround him sometimes succumb to excess. And the effects may be cheesy, but that just adds to the fun.Idiocracyfeatures former footballer Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris) as President Camacho and Dax Shepard (Punk'd) as Joe's futuristic friend Frito.--Kathleen C. (Sleepy Hollow is wide awake on Blu-ray)
『The incredible production values and performances really shine on this Blue-ray edition of Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Tim Burton's rendition on the classic tale is a creepy fall take shrouded in mystery in tune with Halloween. You will not go wrong in buying this edition as it is worthy of many repeated viewings.』

(Wonderfully spooky! The Tim Burton way!)
『This a great time of year to bring out this DVD! I only have standard dvd and not Blu-Ray yet but still looks good. The storytelling is great fun and the 'Dark" spooky skies and atmosphere Burton creates is not to be missed. Danny Elfman's music is a real treat and will scare you to death! The movie runs a little out of steam a little toward the end! That's why not five stars--but still highy recommended!』

(Spooky and Magic)
『Sleepy Hollow is a rare blend of gothic atmosphere, slice-and-dice gore, and black humor, a horror fantasy that works both as horror and as fantasy. Tim Burton fleshes out the legend of the Headless Horseman and creates a starkly striking and frightening world.

With the deft touch that Burton has at his best he builds a world of unparalleled imagination that is completely believable. And in Sleepy Hollow, that world is the stage for a story that's thrilling and with just the right amount of twisty-turny mystery. Costume horror doesn't often surpass its stuffy surroundings to be either genuinely fun or spooky, but Sleepy Hollow does both.』

(Fun pastiche of Hammer horror, Poe, Irving and others)
『I used to love Tim Burton. Being a sf/fantasy/comics freak from childhood on, Burton was one of the few Hollywood filmmakers separate from the Lucas/Spielberg axis who was making stuff that I could always count on seeing with my non-film buff friends who were into the same sort of genre stuff I was. I loved "Edward Scissorhands", "Beetlejuice", and "Ed Wood", and always looked forward to what came next.

But in the past decade or so he's disappointed more often than not. His "Planet of the Apes" remake was complete dreck, and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", while not terrible, didn't seem necessary or particularly necessary either. "Sweeney Todd" was a little bit better, but still didn't make me particularly worry about having missed a couple of his more recent works. I caught up to one of those recently though, and I'm happy to say that my fears were not (mostly) justified.

"Sleepy Hollow", first of all, has very little to do with the Washington Irving story which it is "based on" according to the credits. "Inspired by" might be more accurate, and the film takes equal inspiration from the works of Edgar Allan Poe (specifically his prototypical detective character, Dupin) and Hammer horror films from the late 50s and early 60s - going so far as to cast Christopher Lee in a small role at the beginning of the film.

The cast is certainly a big, big part of the fun here, with such wonderful character veterans as Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, Ian McDiarmid, Michael Gough, Martin Landau and Christopher Walken all getting juicy (if generally small) turns in this story of a New York police constable, Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp), with "advanced" ideas being sent (more or less as punishment) to the small Hudson valley town of Sleepy Hollow to deal with a series of gruesome beheadings, in 1799. As the film develops, Ichabod believes there's a perfectly rational explanation for the murders, and it's to the film's credit and Depp's that as he gradually learns that in fact there is a fantastic, mystical presence behind them (Christopher Walken as the silent but deadly Headless Horseman), he continues to probe the secrets, never entirely giving up his rational belief system but also finding the ability to accept some of the religious/magical possibilities behind the horseman - while also coming under the spell of a young woman at the center of the horror (Christina Ricci).

It's all quite beautifully shot, excellently acted with perhaps the exception of Ricci (one of those actors I can never really accept in period roles), who isn't really bad, and it's a wonderful mixture of comedy, scares and thrills, and a bit of the mystic. My only real problem with it comes in the ending, which is too much like a Scooby Doo "aha, I've got you now" episode; most of the film managed to keep me guessing at least a little bit but the finale is all too typical. Oh well; this is certainly one of the most pleasant surprises I've had in a while, and there's even some interesting stuff below the surface - the whole colonial/witch-haunted/Protestant New England of the 17th-18th centuries brushing up against the coming of modern science and the Industrial Revolution and secularism is quite expertly handled, though it never gets in the way of a good old-fashioned story. Really, loads and loads of fun and probably my 2nd-favorite Burton film at the moment after "Ed Wood".

The DVD transfer seems quite excellent; I haven't listened to the commentary yet (I often don't) and the other extras are of middling interest.』

(Don't Lose Your Head Over This Entry by Tim Burton!)
『It's been ten years since this cool Johnny Depp film came to play and it's still as fun and as comedic as they come.

Loosely based on the Washington Irving tale, Tim Burton wanted to make a story that woudl be a horror tale, great texture and capturing some 18th century wildness.

Oddly, this story reminded me of Columbo, kind of like an 18th century Columbo. Similar in a lot of ways with the conspiracy theories, the four Sleepy Hollow conspirators, and the fact that Icabod's scientific know-how falls prey to an actual horror, the headless horseman.

The Danny Elfman score adds to the mystery of the horseman. Rated "R" most likely because of all the heads being lopped off, quite cleanly I might add.

The detective mystery aspect is fascinating since I did not see that ending coming. Christina Ricci plays a naive girl who dabbles in witchcraft and Icabod faints at the sight of spiders and corpses.

Great flick for a Halloween night.

The DVD has some cool extras, such as an interview with the cast and crew and you really get into Burton's head and see what he was all about, plus film trailers and such.

Uncredited appearance by Martin Landau in the beginning of the film, and a short but masterful rendition of a court judge by Christopher Lee.

To add, the photography was the best. The deep, muted colors throughout the film gave it a moody, depressing look. After the evil is banished at the end, all is bright and autumn red colors. Yeah, a bit corny but interesting play of color and light.

Other Burton Films Recommended:

Beetlejuice
Edward Scissorhands [Blu-ray]』

『Master storyteller Tim Burton (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) weaves an eerie, enchanting version of the classic tale of horror. Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean 1&2) is Ichabod Crane, an eccentric investigator determined to stop the Headless Horseman. Christina Ricci (Monster) is Katrina Van Tassel, the beautiful and mysterious girl with secret ties to the supernatural terror.』
『The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes asThe Nightmare Before ChristmasandEdward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise thatSleepy Hollowis a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving'sThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.

The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats.--Jenny Brown

(Not as bad as everyone said)
『This is the first Saw movie that I purchased on Blu-ray and it was also the first Saw movie that I did not go to the theater to see first. After all the negative reviews I read from critics and fans alike, I was hesitant to purchase it. But I now have a Blu-ray player and I wanted to keep my Saw DVD collection up to date so I decided to shell out the extra bucks for the Blu-ray. Although it's not up-to-snuff with the previous films (especially 1 and 2), I don't think it is nearly as bad as everyone said. Maybe it wasn't worth the extra bucks for the Blu-ray but overall I found the film interesting, full of good Jigsaw traps, and I found it fun to watch. I heard the "Saw 6" is much better but I most likely won't see it until the Saw 6 Blu-ray comes out next year. Bottom line: maybe just purchase the regular DVD of "Saw 6".』

(The curse continues...)
『There is a curse throughout horror movie franchises (or franchises in general) condemning the fifth episode to mediocrity at best, or unfocused, mundane nonsense at worst. The fifth episodes of the following franchises: Friday the 13th pt. 5 (the "Jason imposter" episode), Halloween 5 (that corny man in black gimmick), Star Trek 5 (the lame Shatner directed ep), Leprechaun (okay, that series sucked to begin with), Hellraiser 5 (Craig Scheffer as a debauched cop, while Pinhead is over on the sideline), Return of the Living Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street... the list goes on and on.

Saw V is no exception to this rule. After a cool opening involving an fbi agent ingeniously beating a jigsaw trap, we get scene after scene of Scott Patterson walking around with an angry look on his face, Costas Mandalor in an exceptionally stoic offering as Jigsaw's apparent heir, flashbacks that make no sense (the chronology of the Jigsaw/ Hoffman link is especially convoluted), drab photography that lacks the flair of the Wan/ Bousman directed offerings, and an ending that is telegraphed from pretty much the opening scene.

Even the relevance of the "game" is not explained until Kevin Greutert's superb Saw VI. As it stands, the subplot comes completely out of left field. People looking for ingenious traps better stick to the other sequels as Saw V hasn't a single interesting gadget throughout its running time. And if you're a Saw fan the plot developments are not so germane that subsequent films would be confusing if you haven't seen this one.

Saw V is about the only entry in the franchise I don't like, and further proof that the number "5" should be omitted from the franchise index.』

(Emtombing the ones you Loathe.)
『The games have just begun - that was the credo that empowered the Jigsaw killer and it is also the truth that keeps onkeeping on. Even after what happened to Jigsaw during the last test he gave to a former employee (or partner, or whatever you want to call her), Jigsaw still has a voice and hands to do his dirty deeds. He also has a thing about police officers that has been explained to us in vivid detail, and we find out why this is - if we haven't already pieced that together. There is another game being played as well, one that talks about working together and one that the team of people placed inside this horror don't seem to get, and that is the lovely part about so many of these things. People are such bad listeners - just play the tape and take the game seriously, because this is their lives. The traps here are nasty little things, too, and they are loveingly deceptive because they al;low people to see what they should do but give them the freedom to choose. It is perhaps there, in that freedom of choice, that people mmake their worse mistakes.
As Jigsaw would say, let the games begin.

I've taken to the movies well because I thought they were all done really well, overcoming things like budgetary confines by utilizing Tobin Bell and the saw puppet as things that make the flesh quiver. They also have traps that have duality stamped into their very being, and this duality allows the games to become things that seem to be one thing when they are, in fact, tests that measure other items. I always liked that, enjoying the fact that people are challenged to see the world in different ways, and that some people really do have the means to their liberation. And the ones that do not seem fair, almost unfairly doing things to people with no way out, we see exactly how that happens. And the answers to that are brutal, and unfair on so many levels. Combine with that the acting prowess of some of the individuals involved (I think it takes a lot to become a victim and sell it to an audience), the impact of lighting and music and tools like flashbacks, and the underlying terror that has to be there when you find yourself listening to a tape recorder or a doll that holds the keys to your survival and you have a game unlike anything I would ever want to play. and seeing the places where all of these games have taken place and the extent to which planning goes into everything and it is impressive. Even the first kill, one that happens because someone really doesn't listen, is good stuff. And i love it - i love it a lot.

If you watch Saw, watch them in order. They stack together well, and the plot that expands through-out the series is one to keep track of. Seeing how the helpers become involved, seeing the different type of handywork, and seeing why tests are given oftentime build over time. Even some of the people who fail are added into newer tests, so you count anything out. I personally like all of that, and i like how Jigsaw has some of the greatest lines in this new realm of horror movies. Even the 5th installment, which would normally be bad in any other series, is great here.
I love them all.』

(I No Longer "Want To Play A Game")
『In 2004, the original "Saw" film breathed new life into the horror movie genre. Though enticing viewers with some of the most graphic horror scenes in cinematic history, the real "hook" of the film was its morality-play plotline. Using a tact rarely taken in the annals of horror movies, Saw actually created doubt in the viewers' minds as to whether the "victims" were exactly that. Though perverse, the demented Jigsaw killer was doling out justice in a seminal way that everyone can relate to (even if it horrifies their "good side").

With each subsequent film, however, that magic has been lost, little by little. While Saw II just fed off the hype of the original and didn't mess with the formula and Saw III was interesting for the "dying Jigsaw" plotline, the two most recent installments have failed to recapture that spark of the "original trilogy". Saw IV was just outright confusing, while this film suffers from two major maladies:

First, the departure from the tried-and-true formula of regular citizens being tested in their weakest area. Like I said, the strength of the first few Saw movies was the writers' abilities to make audiences think about the morality of what was reality transpiring. This film, however, doesn't really take that tact and instead just focuses on clearing up all the loose ends from the fourth release. Though perhaps a noble cause for hard-core Saw fans, this line of storytelling only served to irritate me, as Saw IV was where I saw the series begin going downhill and thus didn't want to go in that direction again.

The other notable departure is a moving away from the Jigsaw character. To me, Jigsaw is at the very heart of what the Saw franchise is all about, and the series really isn't active unless he is in it. The flashbacks in IV were interesting, but Jigsaw's presence in V just seemed to be an excuse to bring back Tobin Bell, not to advance the plot in any meaningful way.

Thus, I see the Saw franchise as being at a paradox right now. One direction would be to continue on with the "Jigsaw lineage" and further dilute the original material (the likely path in order to please the die-hard scrutinizers), while the other, more inventive approach would be to come up with something new. Perhaps someone subjecting one of these psychopaths to their own devices?! At any rate, Saw VI will likely be the measuring stone of the "Saw future" considering the failure of this installment.』

『Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. Release Date: 01/20/2009 Run time: 96 minutes Rating: Ur』
『How do you keep a horror franchise going when your villain has been unquestionably and irrevocably killed off? That's a conundrum any number of genre series have tackled--to varying degrees of success--and the problem facing the sadisticSawfilms in its latest entry,Saw V. The filmmakers' answer--faithful henchmen--is at first blush a savvy idea, as it allows the mayhem of original bad guy Jigsaw to continue unabated, despite the fact that he was dissected on a morgue slab in the previous film.Saw Vextends the premise by having disgraced detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor from the previous two films) don the pig mask to unleash horrific tortures on another group of seemingly unconnected strangers. Scott Patterson (Aliens in America) also returns as Hoffman's Javert, a dogged fellow agent who escapes death in the fourth film and an ugly fate in this entry to continue his pursuit. All the elements that have made the Saw series popular with horror fans--the elaborate killing machines, the trompe l'oeil plotting, and the sociopathic judgments handed down by Jigsaw--are intact inSaw V, which is a positive for its most faithful followers, but a negative for just about everyone else.Saw Vcovers no new ground, expands no part of the mythology of the series and seems perfectly content to present a lifeless retread ofSaw IIIandIV. It also suffers from the absence of Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, who despite his top billing, is glimpsed only in brief flashbacks. Bell, who could be unsettling even in the stillest moments, gave the series a gravity that kept its least plausible moments in check, and Mandylor, though game, simply cannot provide the same. What's left is dreary and relentlessly downbeat, and to make matters worse, ends on an open note that clearly indicates that a sixth film is in the works, no matter how obvious that the diabolical ingenuity of the originalSawhas been worn to the bone by its sequels. Only diehardSawfans need to sign up for this round of Jigsaw's games.-- Paul Gaita

(One Ring To Bring Them All And In The Darkness Bind Them)
『So here it is, the crown jewel of the three films. While the third film was already a tiring (for some) 3 hour 20 minute venture, this extended edition of 50 new minutes of footage extends it to an impressive 4 hours and 10 minutes. Again the cast delivers and thanks to this extended version, Christopher Lee and the actors who played the Witch King and Mouth of Sauron (its been awhile since I've watched the documentaries); as I was anticipating to find out what happened to Saruman )Christopher Lee being one of my favorite actors) and was expecting a little more from the Witch King, how threatening Gandalf made him feel then all we see of him is in the big battle, fight Mirando Otto and then get defeated. I find it hard to critique this one as I find no faults with it at all, until we get to the end, where it does drag a little but that's an otherwise small complaint for an otherwise flawless film. Action sequences are the best of the three; the Battle of Pelennor Fields being the highlight and Sam's moment of fighting Shelob as a brilliant moment of the character showing his loyalty to his friend. Howard Shore again provides an excellent score and Into The West is a great, melancholy song to end the trilogy.』

(Lord Of The Rings (Platinum Extended series))
『All I can say is Great! Great! Great!
We especially love the actor interviews.』

(AWESOME!)

It's a wonderful thing that the makers of this DVD decided to trust the public and incorporate the "deleted scenes" into the movie, where they belong. It's also very fine that they chose to add so many scenes that help us know and understand the characters and the depth of the story, instead of just more action scenes. Not that I don't like the action, but this is a story of great human interest, of courage, compassion, amazing strength of character. This comes through with much greater impact than in the "cinema" version. The relationships between the characters are much more filled out and their depth is easier to comprehend. The trust they have in each other and the support they give one another is more representative of what is found in the books. I'm glad they did these extended versions, and I appreciate their length. After all, if you need a bathroom break, there is always a pause button.

『The product was in TIP-TOP shape. NEVER before opened, everything was brand-spankin'-new, no dings, no corners bent and the extended edition of this film is the ONLY way to see this movie. There's a Blu-Ray edition coming out of these movies&I knew that before purchasing this Extended edition of the 3rd installment of the series. However, the blu-rays are the theatrical releases only&the extended edition blu-ray comes out way later, so I opted to purchase this in DVD. This Extended Edition is more thrilling, 50 minutes (almost an entire HOUR)of extra film added to the viewing experience seamlessly integrated into the whole film.....a gazillion hours of extras-bonuses-goodies. An Extended Edition on DVD is far superior than a stinkin' Blu-Ray THEATRICAL release, hands down. Get this extended on DVD to hold you over 'til Blu-Ray Extended Edition packaged with better stuff, then it'll be PERFECT. If you play the DVD on a Blu-Ray anyway...like my PS3...the quality of the DVD gets upscaled, so you're still getting a win-win deal. Trust me...don't think...just buy this. End of story!

『The greatest trilogy in film history, presented in the most ambitious sets in DVD history, comes to a grand conclusion with the extended edition ofThe Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Not only is the third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien the longest of the three, but a full 50 minutes of new material pushes the running time to a whopping 4 hours and 10 minutes. The new scenes are welcome, and the bonus features maintain the high bar set by the first two films,The Fellowship of the RingandThe Two Towers.

What's New?
One of the scenes cut from the theatrical release but included here, the resolution of the Saruman storyline, generated a lot of publicity when the movie opened, as actor Christopher Lee complained in the press about losing his only appearance. It's an excellent scene, one Jackson calls "pure Tolkien," and provides better context for Pippin to find the wizard's palantir in the water, but it's not critical to the film. In fact, "valuable but not critical" might sum up theROTKextended edition. It's evident that Jackson made the right cuts for the theatrical run, but the extra material provides depth and ties up a number of loose ends, and for those sorry to see the trilogy end (and who isn't?) it's a welcome chance to spend another hour in Middle-earth. Some choice moments are Gandalf's (Ian McKellen) confrontation with the Witch King (we find out what happened to the wizard's staff), the chilling Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor, and Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) being mistaken for Orc soldiers. We get to see more ofÉowyn (Miranda Otto), both with Aragorn and on the battlefield, even fighting the hideously deformed Orc lieutenant, Gothmog. We also see her in one of the most anticipated new scenes, the Houses of Healing after the battle of the Pelennor Fields. It doesn't present Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) as asavior as the book did, but it shows the initial meeting between Éowyn and Faramir (David Wenham), a relationship that received only a meaningful glance in the theatrical cut.

If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

And for those who complained, no, there are no new endings, not even the scouring of the Shire, which many fans were hoping to see. Nor is there a scene of Denethor (John Noble) with the palantir, which would have better explained both his foresight and his madness. As Jackson notes, when cuts are made, the secondary characters are the first to go, so there is a new scene of Aragorn finding the palantir in Denethor's robes. Another big difference is Aragorn's confrontation with the King of the Dead. In the theatrical version, we didn't know whether the King had accepted Aragorn's offer when the pirate ships pulled into the harbor; here Jackson assumes that viewers have already experienced that tension, and instead has the army of the dead join the battle in an earlier scene (an extended cameo for Jackson). One can debate which is more effective, but that's why the film is available in both versions. If you feel like watching the relatively shorter version you saw in the theaters, you can. If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

How Are the Bonus Features?
To complete the experience,The Return of the Kingprovides the same sprawling set of features as the previous extended editions: four commentary tracks, sharp picture and thrilling sound, and two discs of excellent documentary material far superior to the recycled material in the theatrical edition. Those who have listened to the seven hours of commentary for the first two extended editions may wonder if they need to hear more, but there was no commentary for the earlierROTKDVD, so it's still entertaining to hear Jackson break down the film (he says the beacon scene is one of his favorites), discuss differences from the book, point out cameos, and poke fun at himself and the extended-edition concept ("So this is the complete full strangulation, never seen before, here exclusively on DVD!"). The documentaries (some lasting 30 minutes or longer) are of their usual outstanding quality, and there's a riveting storyboard/animatic sequence of the climactic scene, which includes a one-on-one battle between Aragorn and Sauron.

One DVD Set to Rule Them All
Peter Jackson's trilogy has set the standard for fantasy films by adapting the Holy Grail of fantasy stories with a combination of fidelity to the original source and his own vision, supplemented by outstanding writing, near-perfect casting, glorious special effects, and evocative New Zealand locales. The extended editions without exception have set the standard for the DVD medium by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features.--David Horiuchi
