Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Dr. Horrible or Mr. Smarmy?) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『My college-age kid was crazy about this short film and was convinced I would love it. Always a red flag for an parent-type adult, since I don't want to hurt his feelings by disliking his favorite show. But I can't say I was crazy about Dr. Horrible. As a semi-realistic, semi-parody of the superhero, science fiction and musical theater genres, Dr. Horrible did have potential. Dr. Horrible is a regular guy who is a mad scientist at war with his nemesis, Captain Hammer, for the heart of the lovely Penny. Though super-smart and super-powerful, the characters act out the nerd-jock emotional spectrum. Which could have been funny if developed more. But the songs, at least at first hearing, were not memorable, at least to me. My kid, on the other hand, sings them all the time. The plot is silly and light, then suddenly and strangely gets heavy and brooding right at the end. Dr. Horrible was evidently cobbled together during the recent Hollywood writer's strike. It was thrown together in a short time, and it shows. The story has holes, the music needs polishing and the characters need fleshing out. It's a work of energy and fun, but seems to have been made less for the viewer than for the actors and crew. I personally found Neil Patrick Harris to be a bit full of himself for my taste, which didn't help my overall impression of the film. The extras seemed to be the actors and directors congratulating themselves for being clever. Hmm. Or maybe I'm just an old fart who doesn't appreciate humor that "hits" late teens and twenty-somethings. YMMV. AT the end of the day, I'm glad I watched it, if only to see how out of synch I am with my kid's generation.』 (No complaints) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This product arrived in a timely fashion, in good shape, and there were no surprises. All of the extras are entertaining and I'm willing to watch the entire thing multiple times just to hear all the commentary. This is a rarity for a DVD for me. I wish that this came with the soundtrack though, I don't want to have to purchase it seperately.』 (Dr. Horible is wonderful!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Joss Whedon does it again (and I imagine he knows it and had already complimented himself immensely)with Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog. Neil Patrick Harris is awesome, and a very good singer, and Nathan Fillion is also surprisingly good. Having never heard him sing, I was skeptical, but he proved that he's not only a talented (and gorgeous) actor, but can carry a tune. Too bad the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Musical didn't have him in it.』 『Special Features: Commentary! The Musical Commentary by the cast and crew Evil League of Evil application videos Making-of featurettes Subtitles: English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) stars as Billy, A.K.A. Dr. Horrible, a budding super-villain whose plans for world domination continually go awry. His two goals: getting accepted into the Evil League of Evil, and working up the guts to speak to his laundromat crush Penny, played by Felicia Day (The Guild). The only thing standing in his way is Captain Hammer, Billy's superhero arch-nemesis played by Nathan Fillion (Firefly). With one big score, Billy could get into the E.L.E. and earn the respect of Penny, but only if he can keep her away from the dashing Captain Hammer... 『Conceived as an "online miniseries event" during the 2008 writers' strike,Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blogis a 42-minute musical romp that bears the distinctive stamp of Joss Whedon. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) plays the title character, who video-blogs about his twin goals to join the Evil League of Evil and to woo the fair Penny (Felicia Day, of Whedon'sBuffy the Vampire Slayerand the Web seriesThe Guild), a woman he met at the local laundromat. Dr. Horrible is foiled on both fronts, however, by his arch-nemesis, the self-absorbed superhero Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion, Whedon'sFirefly). Dr. Horriblewas written by Whedon, his brothers Zack and Jed, and Jed's fiancee Maurissa Tancharoen, and the songs were written by Joss and Jed (who also produced, orchestrated, played, etc.) with some lyrics by Tancharoen. (Jed and Tancharoen have backup singing roles.) The offbeat, off-the-cuff humor is laugh-out-loud funny, and just like Dr. Horrible wants to take over the world, the songs will take over your head: they're engaging ("My Freeze Ray'), stirring ("My Eyes"), and sweet ("Penny's Song"). "So They Say" is particularly evocative of Jonathan Larson'sRent, but as with Joss Whedon's musical episode ofBuffy, "Once More with Feeling," the influences are diverse. It's hard to imagine a better cast. Harris, who's sung Sondheim on Broadway, is a great lead and clearly the best singer, Day is completely charming, and who better than Captain Tightpants to play the pompous superhero? One could argue about the ending, and the independent budget shows, butDr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blogis a complete hoot for people who enjoy musicals with quirky humor. This English movie version of the beloved Dickens tale has rightfully earned the respect and admiration that it gets. There has never been a better acted or more moving film adaptation than this one...hands down! Like so many other people who own some prior version of this classic, I was thrilled to learn that it was re-mastered on Blu-ray. I relied on these 6 favorable Amazon reviews to gain the confidence I needed to take a chance on purchasing this film, since it was hailed as looking and sounding better than it ever has. Despite some reviewers claiming that it was not without flaws, I took that chance. Well folks, when it comes to re-mastering older films it's a gamble. In my opinion, I felt I lost this bet. Yes, the film does seem brighter and in better focus. However I was not expecting to see the picture bending in certain frames or going in and out of focus between scene changes. I also did not expect to hear the obvious audio splices and drop-out like it did a few times. I'm not sure (or confident) that the re-mastering was made from the best possible sources; but if it was, then the sources have deteriorated horribly over time. I wasn't expecting miracles (perhaps this is the best that this movie can be made to look), but can only give this Blu-ray release a lukewarm recommendation. I still adore this movie and always will, flaws and all. Happy Holidays to you all! UPDATE: In response to a commentator of my review, I watched my older DVD version (also produced by VCI Home Video) and found that many of the defects that I mentioned were in the Blu-ray were non-existent in my older DVD. Notably, I'm referring to the bending and splices in the video and the audio drop-outs. Amazing! The Blu-ray improved the sharpness of the video but introduced defects at the same time. Clearly, the best sources were NOT used in the remastering.』 (The Best version comes to Blu-Ray!! (a blu-ray review only)) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『A Christmas tradition every year is to watch some media version of Dicken's Classic "A Christmas Carol", Of all the scores of versions which have come out over the years in color, animation, with lots of computer inhancements, NONE hold a candle to this 1951 British adaptation of the classic short story, For decades I have annually watched this wonderful Alistar Simms (he is Scrooge) version with eager anticipation, launching the holiday season spirit. This dark and very faithful to Dickens story is creepy and heart warming, for sure. NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS MASTERPIECE IS AVAILABLE IN BLU-RAY (1080p) A REMASTERED COPY FROM THE ORIGINAL 35mm PRINT. SIMPLY, ASTONISHING!!!! WITH 5.1 SOUND AND HD PICTURE THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!! THE PICTURE QUALITY AND SOUNDTRACK MAKE THIS FILM SO VERY REAL TO LIFE. YOUR IMAGINATION, YOUR NERVES and HEART FELT JOY are soo PEAKED AND TUNED INTO THIS HOLIDAY CLASSIC!!!! A MUST HAVE!!! AN ANNUAL TRADITION TO BEGIN AGAIN!!! Also included is the standard DVD version in 4:3 and 16:9 format. (Remember widescreen was begun in 1953.) Audio commentary (kind of random information is provided) is also included. ENJOY!!!』 (The Best Version of Dickens' classic, ever) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『The most significant Christmas film ever made. Certainly the truest and most emotionally stirring adaptation of Dickens' classic to this day, and most certainly to come. How do I know this? Well, in the words of Tiny Tim, "I just think it". The aged condition of the film and the fact that it was shot in black and white lend a certain authenticity to it, as if it were actually filmed in the story's time period. Alastair Sim was born to play Scrooge. Even some of the finest actors can't (and won't) ever approach the level he set. He was the "model Scrooge". Sim was as equally convincing as a heartless miser as he was a man enlightened, redeemed and reborn. Other fine actors could play one or the other but not both, at least, not convincingly. Sim is also supported by a very strong cast and crew. This classic version has Heart; It has Spirit like no other; It has believability; It has purpose. Just the sight of a poor little boy (Tiny Tim) peering through a toy shop window and managing a smile even though he knows he'll never have any of the toys he sees will be indelibly etched into your conscience. The music during that scene will stay with you for many seasons to come. Somebody did a commendable job restoring this treasure. Even the standard DVD (also restored and included) looks and sounds far better than any prior home video release, but it's still not perfect. Nevertheless, great strides in its restoration were made and I highly recommend it. But as far as the story goes, watch it alone the first time, without interruption, and if you find yourself touched and perhaps rubbing a tear from your eye at the end when you hear the words, "Can you forgive a pig-headed old fool...", ahhh, you're there. Merry Christmas, "in keepin' with the situation".』 (Amazing!!!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I just got my copy today, and put it in after watching the Blu Ray of Forrest Gump. Trust me. You've never seen A Christmas Carol until you see this new Blu Ray. I was shocked and beside myself at how well this new restoration turned out. The detail is unreal, especially for a film that has always looked so bad. It's not flawless mind you, with the ocassional nick and scratch, but overall this is a beautiful transfer and worth every penny for an upgrade. The sound is quite nice as well. I prefer the original mono to the 5.1 track. Very clear and hiss free.』 (Best Christmas story EVER!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『My family has watched this every Christmas Eve (just before we all "settled down for a long winter's nap") for as long as I can remember. To this date, I have never written a review, owned a Blu-Ray player, or bought anything on Blu-Ray, but this will be the very first one I buy for sure. I can't go one Christmas without having seen this. I can't really say for sure what the picture-transfer will be like, but I've owned this on VHS, 2 times on standard DVD, so this version is a given. If I could have rated it with more stars, I would have. If you like a non-book version of this particular story, you would be crazy to pass this up.』 『Studio: Video Communications Inc. I liked Wings of Desire the first time I saw it, but this new version is clean and beautiful. Seeing it this way a second time made more of an impression on me. WOD is a subtle and tender movie about being human, and it is fascinating to learn about how the film was put together.』 (The ORIGINAL German Film That Inspired "City of Angels" Gets The Criterion Treatment!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Winner of the best director award in the Cannes film festival, the 1987 German film "WINGS OF DESIRE" (original title: Der Himmelüber Berlin = Heaven Over Berlin) inspired the Hollywood film directed by Brad Silberling called "City of Angels" which became a box-office success. This film was inspired by the poetry written by Rainer Maria Rilke and was followed by a sequel called "Faraway, So Close". This German film goes into the belief that the grass is greener on the other side and that something so different can be so enticing. Like everything else, the original is always better (about 99.9% of the time) and Criterion finally brings this beautiful film into a fully restored edition. Berlin, just before the end of the Cold War, Damiel (Bruno Ganz, Downfall) and Cassiel (Otto Sander, Das Boot) are two angels who travel high and above to observe, testify and preserve; they also listen to the thoughts of people in the streets of Berlin. The two are angels ever since the dawn of time; and although they are angels, they cannot interact, unseen to all except to innocent children. During one of their travels, Cassiel becomes intrigued by an old man named Homer (Curt Bois) who dreams of epic peace and Damiel slowly begins to fall in love for a female trapeze performer named Marion (Solveig Dommartin) who is very talented but also very lonely. Eventually, Damiel longs for physicality and to take on human form. He forsakes his immortality and begins to bleed, taste and see the world in color. Damiel is about to embark on a new experience... Director Wim Wenders co-wrote the film's script with Peter Handke (who also wrote the film's recurring poem "Song of Childhood). Much of the film's dialogue feels, sounds and exudes pure poetry throughout and the film's narrations and the dialogue is so beautiful. "...When a child was child, I didn't know it was a child, everything was soulful and all souls were one." The film is also mostly shot in black and white; in effect this represents the angels' viewpoint that the physical world is without color and nothing could attract more attention than the other. It was a clever touch to see through the eyes of someone who is supposed to be impartial or as Cassiel had stated to "testify" when the time had come. I think the black and white also represents the fact that the angels have no cause for emotion and care. Immortality and eternity also seems very attractive but it does come with a price. (please keep in mind that the angels in the film are ones portrayed by the director, seen through the eyes of a human and not to be mistaken as fact) The film's opening act was full of visual poetry as the two angels observe and listen to everyday walks of human life; they are fascinated and at the same time genuinely concerned about us mere mortals. Through their eyes, humanity is represented through our hopes and dreams, our fears and worries and above all the need to be loved and to love. The direction manages to represent both the beauty and the ugliness of humanity; Director Wenders made the right call in shooting the film in Berlin during the days when the wall was still up, and the city while depressing, exposes the strengths and the fragilities of the human spirit. It was no surprise that Damiel would be fascinated with what he saw. What I got from the film is the message that life is precious and that every waking hour is important. The angels in this film have no emotion, and I think that when Cassiel and Damiel touches a human who is depressed or thinking of suicide, they are trying to understand the emotions that swell within the heart. I guess humans have a way to bring out the most extreme emotions by reflecting on their hardships and their own lives. Being human has its merits and someone different sees the beauty of things we usually take fore granted. Humans can feel, and for an intangible angel, it seems very curious. Peter Falk also stars as himself, and Wenders gives his character an enigmatic feel as later revealed in the film's final act. The love story between Damiel and Marion may seem to be the film's focal point, but the direction remembers to show the beauty that is Berlin. As I've said, this film is more than a love story, it brings humanity itself into exposition. The depressing populace and the circus scenes served Wenders' intentions quite well. The beautiful dialogue, (Marion's speech was just full of poetic meaning that it would just turn any woman into putty) the visual style all complement each other. One small fault the film may have is the fact that the movie is not for everyone, it has a sleepy feel and may be too cryptic and poetic for its own good. Mainstream audiences would become bored while those who appreciate stunning cinema would praise Wenders' work. "Wings of Desire" is the type of film that may require multiple viewings and I think each viewing may change one`s opinion of the film. There is an abundant use of symbolisms in the film and one would have fun trying to decipher each one. The film is indeed special, and transcends any elementary classification one may become tempted to staple it with. Highly Recommended! [4½ Stars] Note: If you own the MGM release of the film, this Criterion release is very much worth the double dip. This new DVD release looks and sounds better than the previous release. 』 (Criterion Collection Edition Loaded with Extras!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『The first disc features an audio commentary that actually consists of excerpts of interviews with director Wim Wenders and actor Peter Falk over several years. Wenders talks about the origins of Wings of Desire - it was a return to his hometown of Berlin after spending eight years in the United States. He had planned to make another film but it was too complex and expensive. He had to come up with another idea and quick or the production company he had assembled would break up. This fascinating anecdote is only one of many engaging stories as the two men tell all kinds of filming tales. They do a good job of taking us through the making of this film. Also included are the German theatrical trailer and an amusing "Wen Wunderts" promo trailer. The second disc features the bulk of the extra material, starting off with "The Angels Among Us," a 2003 documentary where key cast and crew members are interviewed. Wenders wanted to make a film about Berlin, the way he remembered it when he was young. Peter Handke talks about his unconventional approach to the script. For the two main angels, Wenders cast Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander based on their 20-year friendship and working relationship. Everyone speaks quite eloquently about their experiences making Wings of Desire. "Cinema Cinemas" features an interview with Wenders from the February 17, 1987 episode of this French television program. We see Wenders at work on the set of Wings of Desire with his cast and crew shooting scenes from the film. Also included are nine deleted scenes with commentary by Wenders and outtakes but only with music. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of footage of the angels observing humanity. The outtakes feature all sorts of beautiful shots of Berlin. There is also a gallery of production design photographs that also highlight the film's gorgeous art direction. Included are captions that comment on some of these stills. Also included is an interview excerpt from an interview with director of photography Henri Alekan done in November 1985. He talks about the challenge of achieving the right tone and atmosphere in a film. "Alekan la Lumiere" features excerpts from a 1985 documentary where Alekan talks to Wenders about his cinematic techniques. There is also footage of him at work. Finally, there is an excerpt from Remembrance, a 1982 film directed by Ganz and Sander about actor Curt Bois who went on to appear in Wings of Desire.』 (A film that nearly overwhelms me each time I see it) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『No movie that I see on a regular basis makes me feel so powerfully the joy of being alive as this one. Although many films and numberless and sappy television shows since 1987 have used angels of one dreadful sort or another, Wim Wenders managed to success while all the others failed. Working from a story by celebrated writer Peter Handke, Wenders takes angels that seem to have more in common with Rilke's Duino Elegies than the Bible or the New Age angels. Their function is to watch and observe and record, and in their own limited fashion, to comfort and commiserate. The trick wasn't to come up with the gimmick of angels being able to listen to the thoughts of humans, but to make those thoughts beautiful and representative of all that is quintessentially human. The trick wasn't to have the angels see in black and white and the humans in color, but in making what was seen, whether two or many toned, beautiful. One has only to see the absolutely appalling CITY OF ANGELS, an English language remake starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage, to see that having gimmicks isn't enough; you must have substance as well. This is not a perfect film. There are some dull moments, and I thoroughly dislike a couple of moments in the film, in particular, Dommartin's speech to Bruno Ganz in the bar near the end of the film. But there are so many magnificent moments, so many moments where they not merely get something right, but produce a moment of almost transcendent beauty, that WINGS OF DESIRE provides more than entertainment, but something akin to a reason to live. The movie becomes in the end a celebration of life, of all the tawdry elements that go into being human. The movie ends in affirming nearly as many things as Walt Whitman does in "Song of Myself." I love the cast. Bruno Ganz is perfect as Damiel, the central angel of the story. Likewise, Otto Sander's face is the perfect receptacle for all that he witnesses on his silent rounds through Berlin, while Solveig Dommartin is so sympathetic a character, so lovely, that one could imagine an angel or anyone else yearning to be with her. And Peter Falk turns in a remarkably quirky character role, playing himself on location in Berlin. The city itself emerges as a major actor, providing what is certain to stand as the last great visual representation of Berlin in the last couple of years before the Wall fell. Curt Bois was a veteran character actor who was a staple in Hollywood films in the 1930s and 1940s, playing a vast number of waiters and tailors and hotel clerks (he plays the pickpocket at the very beginning of CASABLANCA). In what would be the last role before his death, Bois appropriately plays "Homer," the ancient man remembering all that had occurred in Berlin in the past several decades, playing the role of human witness to counterbalance the angelic witnesses. This film and UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, a Wenders film that followed this one in 1991 have to have two of the best soundtracks I have encountered. Subtract either "Six Bells Chime" by Crime and the City Solution or "From Her to Eternity" by Nick Cave, and this would have been far less of a film, and the scene where Solveig Dommartin changes in her trailer while listening to Nick Cave do "The Carny" might be the best scene in the film.』 (You must buy this Blu-ray) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『There are few movies that stay with you long after the credits have rolled and the auditorium lights have come up. This is one of them. I saw this many years ago in a high school Humanities class and always wanted to purchase it. When it came out on DVD I snagged a copy to finally own. It was as good or better than I remembered it. That was a span of some 15 or so years. What more can I say? Powerful, evocative, thought provoking, sublime, and deeply, satisfactorily moving. Pure, high artistry and poetry on a short list of classic European films, and on a whole other plain of existence from most American "art" films. A story of Shakespearean grandeur on celluloid. The images linger, the narration haunts. Black and white and color filmstock are brilliantly utilized in fantastic and complimentary combination used to represent the ethereal and more mundane, Earthbound realms the characters dwell in. Wings of Desire is arguably filmmaker and music video director Wim Wenders' finest masterpiece to date. Don't let "Music Video Director" scare you off. Wim is no Michael Bay or McG. He actually has talent and is very much akin to Spike Jonze in creating fantastical flights of fancy, though with more cerebral and philosophically provoking undertones. That Wings of Desire is now on Blu-ray in a stunning HD transfer, is something to be celebrated.』 『Wings of Desire (Der Himmelüber Berlin) is one of cinema’s loveliest city symphonies. Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears, hopes, and dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, he is willing to giveup his immortality to come back to earth to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images, shot in black and white and color by the legendary Henri Alekan, is movie poetry. Bundled in dark overcoats, they watch over the city with ears open to the heartbeat of the human soul, listening to the internal musings and yearnings of earthbound humans like existential detectives. In these delicate, astounding scenes we float through the thoughts of dozens Berlin citizens, from the weary and worn to the hopeful and young, as the angels record the magic moments for some heavenly record. But when Damiel (the empathic and sensitive Bruno Ganz) falls in love with an angel of another sort, the lonely trapeze artist Marion (willowy, sad-eyed Solveig Dommartin), he gives up the contemplation and observation of life to experience it himself. Wim Wenders's most purely romantic film is like poetry on celluloid, a celebration of the transient and fragile moments of being human: the warmth of a cup of coffee on a cold day, the embrace of a friend, the touch of a lover, the rapture of love. Opening with an angel's-eye view of Berlin in silvery black and white (delicately captured by the great cinematographer Henri Alekan, who photographed Jean Cocteau'sBeauty and the Beast40 years earlier), it transforms into a gauzy color world when Damiel "crosses over" by sheer will. Peter Falk plays himself as a fallen angel with a special sensitivity for celestial visitors ("I can't see you, but I know you're there," he proclaims), and Otto Sander, whose smiling eyes brighten a face etched by eons of waiting and watching, is Damiel's partner. I'm so glad I did! 25 minutes is the perfect length for the story, and nothing could be more charming than having it star all of our favorite Disney characters! This is the only version you'll ever need of the story. Additionally I was excited about this DVD because I remembered loving "Pluto's Christmas Tree" and "The Small One". They were even better than I remembered! Pluto finds himself irked when Chip and Dale end up in the Christmas tree Mickey just cut down and The Small One is a very enchanting story about a boy who must sell his beloved donkey because he's getting too old to do chores. I must admit I cried at the end! "Santa's Workshop" I didn't remember, but it was a fun animated journey through Santa's preparations for the big night. Overall this is an AMAZING collection of short film. The only thing that bothered me was how cheap the main menu was. It had to have been put together on the Paint program, because it looks terrible. I'm sure this might have been done on purpose to give the deluxe edition they'll release in 10 years a better look, but it was still sad. Nonetheless I'll be watching these movies every Christmas, multiple times no doubt!』 (It's About Time) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『It's about time that Disney released Mickey's Christmas Carol onto DVD! I have been able to watch it on TV with my kids a few times, but it was always shortened (not the full length version). I always enjoyed watching it when I was a kid (it came out when I was 5 years old), and I have enjoyed watching it each year with my own children on my old VHS copy (which is beginning to show its age now, and also look a bit "worn out.") Disney really seems to have forgotten a lot of their classic films from the 80's - my kids also love Gummi Bears, but they've only released a portion of those onto DVD. Thank you, Disney, for bringing Mickey's Christmas Carol to DVD! I'm sure you will love this DVD and enjoy Mickey's Christmas Carol just as much as my kids and I have. This is definitely a must buy.』 (Outstanding perfomance) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『The dvd's we ordered were all in great shape and were unopened as promised. It was always one of my favorites and I am sure she will love it when we watch it.』 (Although released before on a precious DVD, for those who want a Holiday Disney DVD of classic animation will dig this release!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『As a child, I can easily remember my prized possession was a Walt Disney book that my father purchased for me and it featured the chronology of the early classic Walt Disney animated shorts. Some of these shorts were shown on the Disney Channel when I was younger but suffice to say, with all the new animation, a lot of these classics have probably been forgotten or have been released on VHS video. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment are now releasing a few of these shorts on DVD for the first time (some have appeared on past Disney DVD releases). Now the seventh volume of the Walt Disney Animation Collection will be released and the theme for this volume is Christmas. In past volumes, we saw many of the Silly Symphony shorts from the 1929-1939 featured in each volume but this time around, we have a volume featuring animation shorts released in the 80's. Also, the following shorts are much longer with most shorts in the past being around under 10 minutes, in this volume, the first two "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and "The Small One" are over 20 minutes long. The seventh volume "Mickey's Christmas Carol" includes four shorts. Included are: 1. Mickey's Christmas Carol - (25:47) This popular Disney animated cartoon is from 1983 and has been featured on several DVD's in the past. In an animated retelling of the Charles Dickens masterpiece, Scrooge McDuck plays Ebenezer Scrooge who is tight with money and puts money above everything. Even on Christmas Eve, his poor employee Bob Cratchit (Mickey Mouse) is docked pay for Christmas vacation. But its when the Ghosts of Christmas past pay a visit to Ebenezer and show him that he should have compassion for people. 2. The Small One - (25:33) A popular Disney animated cartoon from 1978. A story about a boy who lives outside of Nazareth and because "The Small One", a donkey is getting too old, the boy's father tells him they must sell him. The boy who absolutely loves the Small One is crushed but tells his father that he will be responsible in selling Small One and finding him a new home. So, the boy and his donkey go to Nazareth. 3. Pluto's Christmas Tree - (6:53) A 1952 Technicolor animated short. Mickey cuts down a Christmas tree which is inhabited by two chipmunks: Chip and Dale and with Mickey and Pluto decorating the tree, Pluto is disturbed in finding out that the tree has two inhabitants living there. 4. Santa's Workshop - (6:18) a Silly Symphony animation from 1932 featuring Santa and his elves preparing for Christmas day. VIDEO&AUDIO: "Walt Disney Animation Collection" is featured with an aspect ratio of 1:33:1. These classics are available on DVD for the first time but its important to mention that these animated shorts have not been digitally remastered or cleaned up. As a matter of fact, you will see a lot of the dust and scratches of the film and some of the animation look fine for being nearly 70 years old but others look grainy and a bit aged. Granted, these are not classic full featured films but I hope one of these days, many of these classics do get cleaned up or even digitally remastered. As for the audio, audio is featured in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. I found that on my home theater system, the best selection on my receiver to view these animated shorts was to switch it to mono or (if you have this capability) select stereo for all channels. SPECIAL FEATURES: There are no special features included on this DVD. But this volume does come with a litho print from "Mickey's Christmas Carol". JUDGMENT CALL: As mentioned earlier in my review, my prized possession as a child was a Walt Disney booklet that covered the Walt Disney animated shorts in chronological order and had the opportunity to watch these classics. Having these classic animated shorts from the past is great but also to have animation that I watched as a child during the Holidays, included on this DVD is awesome. But most importantly, now that I can share these classics with my son. These four animated shorts (and all previous volumes) are great for the families and in this volume's case, definitely worth sharing with the family during the holidays. Of the released "Walt Disney Animation Collection" volumes, this volume is different in the fact that the past volumes featured shorts that had no dialogue (a few did but many didn't). Mainly music and sound effects but with this volume, "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and "The Small One" are two fantastic animated Disney cartoons that have a touching storyline, beautiful animation and although more recent than the Silly Symphony shorts featured on previous volumes, they are definitely Disney classics! For those who owned the 2005 DVD release of "Walt Disney's Classic Cartoon Favorites, Vol. 09 - Classic Holiday Stories (1952-1983)", may not need this volume as all animation from this DVD are included on the 2005 DVD release with the exception of "Santa's Workshop". Unless you are diehard fan, then to have that DVD with the Silly Symphony short may be worth it to you. I know that there are some who wish these classics were digitally restored or remastered but I doubt that Disney will do that for a lot of their animated shorts for now (although they are really doing a fantastic job on the Disney feature films such as "Sleeping Beauty", "Pinocchio" and "Snow White" for the Blu-ray release). But overall, these collections are offered for a low price and if you are a Disney fan, it's a no-brainer that this volume is definitely worth it. "Walt Disney Animation Collection Vol. 7: Classic Short Films - Mickey's Chritmas Carol" is definitely recommended!』 『Celebrate the holidays with MICKEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL, a beloved classic short film that is now part of the Disney Animation Collection! Well, Coraline finds just such an alternate universe lurking in the corner of the rundown Victorian home that she and her consistently busy and utterly self-absorbed parents have just moved into - a magical world hidden behind a secret locked door where mice dance, cats talk and duplicate parents cater to a beloved child's every whim and fancy. But as the old adage says, "Be careful what you wish for" - and soon Coraline is discovering, much to her dismay, that this "perfect" world and these "perfect" parents may not be quite so perfect after all. Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, "Coraline" is one of the most enchanting and visually arresting films to have come our way in quite some time. Prime credit for its success goes to writer/director/production designer Henry Selick and his team of 3-D/stop-motion animation wizards who have created a world that is rooted in both reality and fantasy at one and the same time. The triumph begins with the heroine herself, a feisty, naturally curious, no-nonsense kid whom any viewer, regardless of age, will be immediately drawn to. As voiced by Dakota Fanning, Coraline is skeptical without being cynical, and her yearning for a mother and father who might actually pay a little attention to her could not be more universal in its appeal. Like all good fantasies made for kids, "Coraline" finds its truths in its central character - in a lonely child who has been ripped away from her friends, and whose parents are so intensely focused on their own adult interests that they have no time to enter into the world of childish things that naturally concern her (people can`t even get her name right, since just about everyone insists on addressing her as Caroline). But all is not sweetness-and-light even in the bright and colorful "other" world that Coraline visits - not by a long shot. For the movie taps into many of those primal fears - of abandonment, of being seduced by evil with promises of goodies - that loom large in many of our most cherished folk stories and fairy tales. Thus, since "Coraline" does venture into some pretty dark places, it might prove more than a little disturbing for very young audiences. Older kids, on the other hand, will likely enjoy the creepiness and will surely find themselves rooting on this imaginative and resourceful little girl as she uses her courage and intellect to outwit those who would cause her harm. The animation is first-rate on every level. The characters, with their sharp angles and spindly protuberances, look at times as if they'd just stepped out of a Tim Burton production - and the somber, nightmarish setting, with its dark skies and gnarly trees, conveys that impression as well (not really much of a surprise, actually, since Selick was the director of Burton`s "Nightmare Before Christmas"). Yet, "Coraline" never feels derivative of other movies; it is instead a wholly original and beautifully crafted work in its own right - and one you would be foolish and improvident in the extreme to miss out on.』 (Does Not Play on All Blu-ray Players) ![]() 『I purchased this product to watch on Halloween and was very disappointed when (after watching preview stuff) nothing happened after clicking "Play Movie". I'm not about to buy a new Blu-ray player every year or so to keep up with new technology! The film CORALINE is a somewhat disappointing but still entertaining adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "children's" book. The book is creepier then the film adaptation because it leaves more to the imagination. The film is much brighter and more colorful than the setting Gaiman describes in his book. Still, the animation is interesting and there are some surprising scenes that will make viewers jump even when seen on the small screen without 3D glasses. Coraline is a likable heroine even though she complains a lot and doesn't always make the best decisions. The characters are well-voiced, particularly the elegant, smooth talking black cat Coraline befriends. Corlaine's eccentric neighbors provide some well-timed comic relief. This movie will captivate imaginative children and keep adults entertained. However it may be too frightening to the very young as scenes of ghost children and Coraline's parents rather imaginatively trapped are included.』 (Not for Children) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Be warned this is a creepy film with some disturbing images for younger eyes (and some older!). Coraline is a teenager who has just moved to an old house in the middle of nowhere with her writer parents and she is bored, bored, bored. Her only companions are an annoyingly talkative boy Wybie (short for Why Born), some eccentric neighbors from the theater and circus, and a strange, button-eyed doll with a marked resemblance to Coraline which Wybie found in an old trunk of his grandmother's. When Coraline finds an old door hidden behind an armoire and papered over with wallpaper, she convinces her mother to unlock it, only to find a wall of bricks. When Coraline revisits the door later that night, the bricks magically disappear and she discovers a strange pathway to another world where everything is just what she wishes for. In stark contrast to the real world where Coraline's parents just don't have time for her, her "Other Mother" and "Other Father" in this alternate world are the perfect loving, attentive parents who anticipate her every need and desire. Initially comforted and quite happy in this new world, suspicion that things may not be quite as they seem grows inside Coraline and her disquiet is furthered by the mute "Other Wybie" and a strange-talking cat that seems to move between both worlds. I look forward to every Christmas-season just to rewatch this masterpiece. Such a good movie.』 (Damn Your Merry Christmas! Patrick Stewart's Stellar Scrooge!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Patrick Stewart stars in a delightfully accurate rendition of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. I would even say it surpasses Alistair Cooks' and George C. Scott's rendition. Best known for his commanding performance as Star Trek: The Next Generation's Captain Picard, Stewart digs deep into his Shakespearian roots to practically channel the black-hearted miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. Stewart won Best Actor by the Screen Actor's Guild in his performance. He also had played a one man A Christmas Carol with on-stage performances before coming to the TNT Network for this rendition. Stewart chose the writer and director and insisted on some CG to make the ghosts "ghostly" and the special effects perfect without overwhelming the story and I think they did that in spades. The Victorian feel and the gothic presence of the whole Dickens's feel was fun to see. The detail and cinematography were somewhat historically accurate, though the purple coats and striped socks perhaps not so much. A few minor quibbles, such as the ghost of Christmas Present, the jovial, laughing ghost, was more subdued in this one. Unlike other renditions, Christmas Present travels the world with Scrooge, in the prisons, on boats, in the coal mines, seeing how the poor and destitute celebrate. He throws Scrooge's words back at him with a bit too much relish and sarcasm for my taste. The Christmas Future is a bit fake with the hood and glowing eyes, kinda like watching a ten foot tall Star Wars Jawa! The discovery of Scrooge's grave, cracking open and pulling him in, WOW, great effects. The after-story carries the viewer through to the end, with Tim's exclamation of God blessing us, every one, but it's done with taste, no sap. Another accurate rendition of the book is the Ghost of Christmas Present's two creatures hiding under his cloak -- you don't see that one too often -- the boy Ignorance and the girl Want; if one denies Ignorance, he will engulf you all. Great quotes include: "Men's actions determine certain ends; if they persist in them but if their actions change, the ends change too." And said only the way Stewart could say them. Fun little bits such as Scrooge checking the books of his younger self at Fezziwig's and nods approval, or walking into the stock exchange exclaiming how this is his territory. I've also noted that Amazon carries some fairly crass renditions of A Christmas Carol: "A Diva Christmas Carol" with Vanessa Williams and "A Carol Christmas" with a female role for Scrooge. It is so much more real than the old 70's version. I'm so glad that the writers really were mindful of the Christian theme of the story. The song "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", which is sung really sums up the theme of the movie. "Remember Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas Day, to save us all from Satan's Power when we've gone astray, Oh, Tidings of Comfort&Joy!" My heart ached for this man and when he came to this rebirth at the end, he was visibly filled with the 'holy spirit' and you can't help but shed a tear because you're happy for him and at the same time it's very emotional. It has many lessons to be learned by both young&old. It will be a treasure to my family for many years to come.』 『A Christmas Carol ? TNT Original Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek: The Next Generation) stars as Scrooge, the mean-spirited miser who gets his terrifying comeuppance when he imagines he?s visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, and taken on a life-altering journey. Spellbinding special effects, a star-studded cast and a timeless holiday story make this brilliant presentation of Dickens? classic the most heartwarming, compelling and powerful adaptation ever filmed.Year: 1999Director: David JonesStarring: Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Joel Grey』 『Standing out in the crowded field of screen adaptations of the classic Dickens novelA Christmas Carolis hard to do, but this version pulls it off. When a transparent Jacob Marley walks through Ebenezer Scrooge's apartment door, you know you're seeing something both timeless and contemporary. Other strategically placed special effects--a funnel cloud that transports Scrooge and the ghost of Christmas present, the hollow specter of Christmas future--keep you riveted without slipping into anachronism. But, as good as the technology is, the performances are what really power this 93-minute TNT interpretation. Patrick Stewart brings a depth to Scrooge that allows the character to go beyond the cartoonish qualities that have made him a Christmas mainstay. That doesn't mean he's any less heartless with his hapless employee Bob Cratchit (Richard E. Grant) or any less dismissive of his well-meaning nephew. A frail-looking Joel Grey makes an excellent ghost of Christmas past, and a superb British cast ably fill the remaining roles. Director David Jones, shooting on location in England and at London's Ealing Studios, has achieved a balance of science and sentiment that will help this version hold up for many years to come.--Kimberly Heinrichs』 『 A Christmas Carol > 『 A Christmas Carol > 『 A Christmas Carol > 『 A Christmas Carol > 『 A Christmas Carol! > 『 A Christmas Carol! > 『 An American Christmas Carol > 『 An American Christmas Carol > 『 Scrooge - In COLOR! A Christmas Carol(1938)is a Christmas Carol light;for those who want their taste but not all the "calories"!.Clicking in at a speedy 69 min.it is no wonder this film was a TV staple for years until they began pushing the Alistair Sims version back in the 70s.The film is non stop and is over far too soon.By now we all know the plot of a miserly businessman who abhores Christmas and who gets his wake up call courtesy of three spirits;becoming a new man.The film doesn't linger on little plot nuances(that would have improved it immensely)like the door knob coming to life,or his old love,or his reunion with his nephew, etc. When Owen(Scrooge)argues with Fred watch the spittle literally coming out of his mouth and don't mind the wires when he "floats" out the window with the ghost of Christmas present. Also Scrooges'young sister talks very much like Stan Laurel while Feziwig, not to be outdone, does his best Stan Laurel smiling;it's uncanny! 2 1/2 stars. It Happened on Fifth Avenue(1947)stars Gale Storm(well known later for her own show on TV),Don Defore(to become well known on TV as Ozzie and Harriets'next door neighbour and later Hazel's boss),veteran character actors Victor Moore and Charles Ruggles.Moore is the central character,a street bum,who inhabits a mansion that gets deserted so many months a year by its millionaire owner played by Ruggles. The games begin when the house becomes inhabited by more and more people and who are eventually caught by the owners' daughter. But she plays along as a fellow down-and-outer and falls in love with an ex-GI(Defore),even getting her father and mother in on the act.The film has its' charm but is not engaging enough to maintain interest on a consistent basis.Moore's den-motherish tongue waggings can get a little old quite fast and he seems a little out of place in such a lead role.Funny enough the gags in this film are the best things about it.Good and funny lines are given just throw away status and have little of the punch they otherwise would have had in a better film.Further, later in the film there is a beautiful sequence with Defoe and Storm sitting at a wobbly legged table and a waiter who tries to fix it.He comes to one side, goes under and reappears at the other side, and is repeated much to the couples amazement. It is so good it is out of place.Overall there just isn't enough spark in this film to give it any more than a 3 star rating. Christmas in Connecticut(1945)stars Barbara Stanwyck(of TVs Big Valley fame;and yes she was a substantial star way back when!)who is a columnist who writes about her daily life and her cooking in a beautiful home in the country, with her hubby and child.Trouble is it is all made up;even her boss(Sydney Greenstreet)doesn't know it.But the jig is up when the boss invites himself to her "place" for Christmas.Stanwyck enlists the help of her Uncle Felix(SZ Sakall)for cooking and general back-up chores and a hubby-wanna be played by Reginald Gardiner.Throw in a hero GI(Dennis Morgan)who falls in love with this "married" writer and bedlam reigns supreme. This is a film that tries hard to be better than it is.Stanwyck and Sakall really do dominate this picture but their efforts aren't enough to save it from its' 3 star status. The Little Shop Around the Corner(1940)stars Jimmy Stewart as a head clerk who toils in a general store in Budapest, run by Frank Morgan(stage and screen vet and the wizard in the Wizard of Oz).At first all is seemingly ok but Morgan has private troubles with his wife and he thinks Stewart is behind it.As tensions build a new clerk starts at the store played by Sullivan and Sullivan and Stewart start rubbing each other the wrong way.Morgan fires Stewart because of his suspicions and is suicidal. He ends up in the hospital, apologizes to Stewart when the truth comes out and makes him acting manager. All along both Sullivan and Stewart have had pen pals and Stewart is amazed to learn his pal is none other than Sullivan, but she remains oblivious to the end. This is a very smart and engaging film.Lubitsch reigns the actors in and all really under-play their parts to get a more immediate and "real" effect for their characters and it works wonderfully. In typical Lubitsch style it is a film that wants to tell its' story in its own way and if you keep with it you will be rewarded hansomely. Many films would have had Sullivan and Stewart in the dark for much of the film(with a double late-film revelation)but here he lets one of the two in on the "secret" and we watch how Stewart tries to deal with it,adding an extra dynamic to the plot which otherwise wouldn't have been there. This film deserves its' 4 1/2 stars;the best film in this collection. All films have been transferred pretty well and all have the same features present on the discs than if you were to buy them seperately. An FYI,It Happened on Fifth Avenue has no features or even scene selections on it at all(!),just a play option. Overall, for the price, this is a nice collection of mostly average Christmas films with Christmas Carol the poorest,The Little Shop Around the Corner the best and the other two falling into the middle. If you can stand the two double sided discs then this is certainly worth getting.』 (Product info/details are incorrect) ![]() 『Even though the product detail shows this collection as COLOR. The only thing in color is the DVD Sleeve! All movies are BLACK&WHITE format only!』 (Great holiday favorites!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Christmas in Connecticut is a great holiday romantic comedy about a young woman who writes for a magazine geared to homemakers. She claims to be married, have a child and live on a farm in Connecticut, but is actually a single, childless, apartment dweller. The problems start when her publisher wants her to give a recent war hero a home for the holidays on her Connecticut farm. She consents to marry a long-time boyfriend who actually has a farm in Connecticut to save her editor from losing his job. They arrange to be married on the farm, but the judge doesn't get the job done before the war hero arrives. That creates some awkward moments. The housekeeper tends babies for women who are working during the war, and they are supposed to be "the child" but with a different baby showing up each day confusion ensues. Stanwyck's character, of course, begins to fall for the hero, who is also falling for her but thinks she is a married woman and is trying to respect that. It is all good, clean fun and "What a Christmas!" The Shop Around the Corner is a very clever comedy whose theme has been repeated in other movies, as mentioned in Annie's review. Clara is falling for the man with whom she corresponds on purely intellectual subjects. She has never met him. At the same time she gets a job in a leather goods shop and cannot get along with her boss (Jimmy Stewart). You can figure it out from there. Delightful fun. Either one of these two movies is worth the price of this package. It Happened on 5th Avenue is a pleasant film. The owner of a 5th Avenue mansion is wintering elsewhere and a hobo helps himself to the house. He invites in others who need a place to stay in the housing crunch following WWII. Without their knowledge, one of their fellow tenants is actually the owner, who hides his identity to see what is going on in his home. Everyone knows the story of A Christmas Carol, so I won't elaborate on this one. This is a wonderful set of holiday movies at a price that can't be beat. If you don't like black and white movies this may not satisfy you, but the stories are great and my family really enjoys them. The only complaint I have is that they are double-sided disks and I prefer single sided.』 (Yuletime quadruple feature from TCM) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Warner's TCM GREATEST CLASSIC FILMS COLLECTION is a series of over two dozen twin packs. This 69 minute Loew's release features an interesting company behind Reginald Owen as Ebenezer Scrooge. Gene and Kathleen Lockhart are Bob and Mrs. Cratchit and their daughter June plays a Cratchit child. Leo G. Carroll is Marley's ghost and Ann Rutherford portrays "Christmas Past." Silent-era clown Billy Bevan, who also lent his raspy basso voice to early Looney Tunes shorts, appears as "Leader of Street Watch." In the romantic comedy CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945), Sydney Greenstreet is third billed behind Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan. Miss Stanwyck's character was based on Gladys Taber, a ladies magazine columnist who lived on a Connecticut farm. John Dehner cameos as a state trooper. Dehner began as a Disney animator, then appeared often on radio-- he was Paladin on HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL. Other cast members: Reginald Gardiner, Una O'Conner and Frank Jenks. Also here is "ditzy blonde" specialist Joyce Compton. (To see Miss Compton at her nuttiest, check out Eddie Sutherland's 1940 turn-of-the-century farce, THE VILLAIN STILL PURSUED HER, with Alan Mowbray as the baddie and Buster Keaton playing his opposite.) IT HAPPENED ON FIFTH AVENUE (1947) was the very first ALLIED ARTISTS release. This company was formed when MONOGRAM Pictures and two smaller outfits merged. Frank Capra was slated to direct until producer-director Roy Del Ruth purchased screen rights to this story of a homeless man and his friends who take advantage of a manson left empty while the owners are away for the holidays. The fine cast includes Don DeFore, Ann Harding, Charles Ruggles, Victor Mature, Gale Storm, Grant Mitchell, Edward Brophy and Alan Hale Jr. Ernst Lubitsch's holiday romance THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940) was a first screen adaptation of Hungarian playwright Miklós László's "Perfumerie" (aka "Illatszertár"). This storyline was later used for the 1949 musical, IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME and in 1998 for YOU'VE GOT MAIL. Director Lubitsch, who also worked in a Budapest shop as a boy, called this his favorite movie. Unlike most productions, all scenes werefilmed sequentially. Cast includes Margaret Sullavan, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Morgan, Joseph Schildkraut and in a walk-on, Sarah Edwards.』 『A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1938) Reginald Owen portrays Charles Dickens’ holiday humbug Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser’s miser who has a huge change of heart after spirits whisk him into the past, present and future. From sets to stars to story, this triumphant adaptation adds a glow to the season. Like Tiny Tim’s benediction, it blesses us – every one. CHRISTMASIN CONNECTICUT (1945) A magazine columnist totally devoid of the homemaking skills espoused in her column had better get some fast: her boss has invited himself and a recently returned war hero to her home for Christmas. Laughs, romance, holiday cheer: that’s the recipe Barbara Stanwyck and a stellar company follow in this perennial favorite. IT HAPPENED ON 5TH AVENUE Home for the holidays! GI families hit by the post-World War II housing crunch take over an abandoned New York City mansion. THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER In the third of their four screen pairings, Margaret Sullavan and JamesStewart engage in retail romance wrapped in the ribbon of director Ernst Lubitsch’s trademark touch of wit and charm. The action is just enough to please, and to leave the viewer wanting more. The film's pace is brisk and there is nearly no downtime. Downey Jr. perfectly portrays Tony Stark, an immature billionair turned empathetic hero. Jeff Bridges rarely plays a villain, but turns out a believable performance that is a good counterpart to Downey's character. Terrance Howard has a somewhat minor role, but Howard pulls it off greatly; it is too bad that he was replaced for the sequal. Paltrow's take as Stark's assistant is the heart of the film. I hope the sequal is just as good.』 (SENSATIONAL) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is an incredible movie. Robert Downey played the role extremely well. I enjoyed every part. When jet-setting genius-industrialist Tony Stark is captured in enemy territory, he builds a high-tech suit of armor to escape. Now, he’s on a mission to save the world as a hero who’s built, not born, to be unlike any other. Co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, it’s a fantastic, high-flying journey that is "hugely entertaining" (Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal).』 『You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. AndIron Manis different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series,Iron Manputs billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quit hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right.--Robert Horton Stills fromIron Man(Click for larger image)
