Amazon.com Safely Pacaged,So I Had Nothing To Worry About.』 (Tons of positives, a few negatives, but when it all boils down...) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『...this is without a doubt the best Gundam series I've ever seen. So far it's the only one I've actually liked enough to BUY the whole thing. Some problems do weigh this show down a little bit, but with the legion of positives, it almost doesn't matter. POSITIVES: + Characters are full of personality; good characters aren't all justice, all the time; evil characters are not MWAHAHAHAHA TAKE OVER TEH WORLD evil and each has their own unique characteristics. + Rather than have a share of iffy episodes thrown in with some magnificent ones, the show never strays from telling a full-on story. + Tons of plot-twists; not a boring and predictable storyline. + Music is relatively simple in composition, but adds depth and gives a retro feel. + Characters from the original Gundam make more than just cameo appearances; several such as Amuro, Hayato, Katz, Char, and Bright play significant roles in the story, while Kai, Mirai, and Fraw play good brief supporting roles. The only one to make merely a cameo appearance and not even say anything is Sayla. + While not continuing right where the first Gundam series left off, the connections to the original are very well planned. NEGATIVES (Because nothing's really perfect) - Sometimes when a character doesn't show up for a while, you think "Where did he/she go?" and when they return again you think "How did he/she get here of all places?" - This is 1985, so the art and animation are a little dated. - The dub is pretty bad. - Kamille, while not boring, is sometimes a very annoying, Luke Skywalker-level whiny lead character. The thing is, not only are there more good things than bad, the good things would outweigh the bad if there were the same number of each. This show simply cannot be missed. BUT! At the same time, it is better you see some fair portion of the first Gundam series, either in the 43 television episodes or the three compilation movies. That way, you will have a significantly better understanding of some of the names and terminology used in this show. 5 stars all the way!』 『In Zeta Gundam, the sequel to the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, the Universal Century world is locked into an escalating conflict. While the AEUG resistance group strives to convince the world of the justice of its cause, the brutal Titans continue to suppress dissent through violence and fear. Now the struggle enters a new phase as a powerful third force enters the battlefield, and the AEUG and Titans race to enlist the support of the mysterious Axis renegades. Confronted with his past, Char Aznable at last decides to embrace his role as leader of the AEUG. But his choice may have come too late, for the Titans have completed their most terrible and devastating weapon.』 『Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam(1985) gets increasingly complicated, as Amuro Ray and Char Azanable from the firstGundamseries appear. The confrontation between the rebel forces of the A.E.U.G. (Anti-Earth Union Group) and the power-hungry paramilitary Titans becomes a triangle of competing powers when a relict Zeon force arrives on the scene, led by Haman Karn, who is determined to restore the Zabi family to power. The storyline gets even more tangled as Kamille Bidan uses his Newtype powers to establish psychic bonds not only with his girlfriend Fa Yuiry, but with Sarah, Four, Reccoa, Emma, and Rosammy. These links feel repetitious, as do the metal-hand-to-metal-hand duels between Kamille's Zeta Gundam and the enemy Mobile Suits that occur in every episode. There's little sense of a broad story arc, and at this early phase of anime, the filmmakers were still learning how to write credible female characters. Fa comes across as a twit along the lines of Minmei inRobotech, and she's saddled with two thoroughly obnoxious orphans.Zeta Gundamlacks the depth of characterization that made08 MS Teammemorable and the CG-assisted space battles inGundam Seedand other recent installments. But for viewers interested in following the development of the popular and long-runningGundamfranchise, it's must viewing. After the first two discs the actors improve and the story gets a little more complex. Not less obviously contrived but better. The main plot revolves around a romance between two of the main characters which develops over the series. But unlike most shows where the last episode is just "The End" this one has a real ending that doesn't feel tacked on. I'd recommend it for that reason. After watching the whole show, I enjoyed the experience. 』 (Best hard science fiction I've seen) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I'm a big fan of science fiction especially the hard variety, And I wasn't disappointed. Not only was the technology realistic, so were the characters. Everything was believable, and the story telling was spot on. Great if you're looking for an anime with a little bit of everything, love, action, suspense, drama, humor, and mystery. I'm really drawn to space-themed anime and watched this on a whim, and fell in love and had to buy it. Highly recommend it!』 (Science Fiction That Resembles Science Fact) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Sometimes an anime story comes along that manages to push exactly the right combination of buttons to appeal to nearly everyone. Planetes is an example of this most rare and thoroughly enjoyable experience. If you know nothing about this program the premise may seem a bit, um unimpressive in its rather narrow scope of vision. The concept of Planetes centers on junk- no, really- space junk to be exact. As the second half of the 21st century witnesses a humanity capable of traveling and living in space, debris that we left behind to eternally orbit the Earth has become a serious safety hazard. Just like the men today who come around to collect our refuse from garbage cans on the street side curb each week, so too does the garbage zipping around the planet require human beings for the task of collection and disposal. Enter our lead characters, a group of very unique individuals who come together in the stuffy office space of a large orbiting space station with the common goal of ridding the solar system of man-made debris, one piece at a time. If the prose sounds a bit under-whelming, take heart in the fact that following along against this seemingly menial job in the grand scheme of things is perhaps the show's greatest strength. The viewer is treated to a near-endless succession of interesting, realistic science fiction but as only the backdrop to the monotony and routine of a futuristic daily job. Additionally the interaction between the lead cast is incredibly accurate and lifelike thanks to the fact that the nature of their jobs is established early on in terms of social status. Pilots, managers, and just about anyone else in the organization seem to look down on the lowly debris collectors (in fact labeling the whole unit Half-Section) despite the fact that without them, space travel would be severely stifled. The true beauty of Planetes lies simply in its realistic interpretation of the near future and a painstaking attention to small detail. The gains made in space travel are near science-book accurate for the setting of the year 2075. Yes, humans travel into space via pressurized aircraft (not unlike a beefed up version of a jumbo jet) and enter into pre-established orbits from there. Sure the average person can take a vacation to the lunar surface, but it's still a four-day trip to the moon just like it is for astronauts today. More impressive still is that the moon's distance to the planet earth is chillingly accurate as viewed from the lunar surface. So often in fiction, the moon is portrayed as a celestial body just above the clouds. Add the fact that earth appears a distant blue sphere from the moon's surface to the four-days travel time (at speeds of 18,000 miles per hour) and the scope of the galaxy starts to look dauntingly immense (just like it really is). Another beautiful little scientifically correct touch is the fact that all of the external space shots are devoid of sound (since sound is after all, vibrations carried through air). Every space scene doesn't feature a panoramic backdrop of perfectly twinkling distant stars either. Sun light reflected from the earth's (or moon's) surface often drowns out such views in favor of simple silent blackness. The level of technical detail is exceptional and impressive, making this one of the best of science fiction series of all time and is rivaled only by the interesting character development in the foreground. The story focuses on Tanabe, a naïve and idealistic rookie debris collector, and her budding love interest in the almost comically cynical Hachirota (who has more names than a phone book). The high point of the show is the inner office political strains as some of the work-environment struggles take cues from classic pop-culture staples The Office and Office Space. Couple that to a chief who knows he's useless, a die-hard temp-worker, a tough, chain smoking, and yet oddly attractive female pilot, and you have the formula for some solid interaction dynamics. Pacing is nearly perfect as well with several episodes that are deliberately uneventful. As such, this is truly a show that only the Japanese could have done so delicately. American studios would have littered the prose with unnecessary action, drama, or futuristic technology (worm-holes, hyperdrives, and so on). Instead, Planetes blends a realistic daily grind and realistic space travel with the type of awkward romance that American children experience at around the age of 12. It may not sound like much, but somehow it works very well. Unlike most anime, the look and shading of the characters is particularly unique. The colors aren't especially vivid or bright but rather earth-toned and subdue which works well with the drab backdrop of life within a space station. Those accustomed to giant, glassy eyes may be surprised to find much more realistically proportioned (and dare I say Asian) peepers here. Like most Bandai Anime Legends collections, the set is a bit light on extras but makes up for this by offering up the entire show across 6-discs for a great price. My only complaint about Planetes is that the show comes to an end. Concluding the 26th episode had me wishing for another 26.』 (Excellent and super-realistic sci-fi comedy/drama) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is anime for those who liked 'From the Earth to the Moon', 'The Right Stuff' and perhaps 'The Office'. It really is the most realistic and enjoyable sci-fi/comedy/drama film ever, beating out both '2001: a Space Odyssey' and the excellent sci-fi mock-documentary 'Voyage to the Planets' (known in England as 'Space Odyssey') in terms of its devotion to realism. Although the series is set 70 years in the future, the show uses only the science we use now and that we can be fairly sure will exist at that time. No warp drives or matter transporters here, only good old fashioned rockets and good old Newtonian physics. I think I've learned more about the realities of space exploration from a few minutes of viewing this series than I ever have from years of keen interest in space documentaries and NASA TV. In my view, this show should be required viewing for astronauts in training - yes, it's that realistic and that informative. This show proves that realism can make for truly great science fiction. We don't need di-lithium crystals when the real story is where it's always been (whether we're talking about Star Trek, Star Wars, 2001 or indeed Planetes itself) - in the interactions of well-written characters. The show starts off a little over-the-top (more like 'The Office' in space) and there are a couple of episodes in the first few that are more than a little corny, but there are also a couple of episodes that are hilarious - the one where they meet ninjas on the moon is classic! After the first seven or eight episodes it settles into more of a thoughtful and well-written drama with the occasional humorous scene. I enjoyed the dramatic episodes equally as much as the comedy episodes - there's a lot to like in this show, and watching the characters grow is definitely a big part of that. If I have any criticisms of the show, it's with the English dub. In some ways it's better than the Japanese version (e.g. Hachirota "Hachimaki" Hoshino's voice sounds more age appropriate in the English dub), but all the characters speak with an American accent - every single one - and this comes across as very odd, since it's quite obvious that at least two of the characters are Japanese and one is Russian. Now I can understand giving the Japanese characters American accents, since this is a region 1 DVD and the American audience is meant to identify with the leads, but the choice for the Russian is just strange. But I'm not going to make too big of a deal of it - once we get to know the characters their accents (or rather the lack of them) kinda fade into the background. Altogether, Planetes is an excellent show that can be enjoyed by anyone who doesn't have an aversion to cartoons. Some episodes may not be entirely suitable for kids though - not because there's any unpalatable sexual content or violence, but because some of the issues discussed are more serious (i.e. the real effects of poverty, death, disease etc.). Like many Japanese anime movies and shows, this is definitely geared towards for teens and adults. The Planetes Complete Collection comes in a nice 'keep case' that uses a very well designed system of keeping the six DVDs safe and secure, and unlike some DVD cases it's fairly easy to get the discs out - just press and pull - no wrestling with the thing and yelling "Come out you stupid bugger!". Each disc contains about five episodes and the last three discs include a very short (like five minutes) but informative documentary covering the real effects of space debris on the space program, as well as a few digital comics, audio episodes, intro and ending sequences without subtitles and the usual trailers. Sadly there are no interviews with the cast or crew, although some of the episodes include quite funny commentaries made by the actors and director while under orders to drink beer while commenting! The DVD presents the show in 16:9 anamorphic and definitely NOT 1.33:1 as Amazon's product details currently state. Video and sound are good, with optional Japanese/English dubs and subtitles. In my view this is the best DVD set for space fans since HBO's 'From the Earth to the Moon' was released on DVD. Anyone who loves space exploration should take a look at this show.』 『Studio: Infinity Resources Inc Release Date: 11/28/2006』 『The sci-fi adventurePlanetes(2004) opens in 2075, as eager but maladroit Ai Tanabe arrives at Space Station ISPV-7--and discovers she's been assigned to the Debris Section, the department charged with cleaning up the orbiting junk that threatens interplanetary navigation. Ai immediately begins squabbling with her instructor, veteran astronaut Hachirota "Hachimaki" Hoshino. The set-up of a feisty newcomer joining a team of eccentric grunts recallsPatlabor: the oddballs in the Debris Section are also under-appreciated and underpaid, but hardworking and dedicated. In the first few episodes, the relationship between Tanabe and Hachimaki feels like anime boilerplate, but the filmmakers deftly unfold their back stories, transforming standard characters into intriguing individuals. Hachimaki has to wrestle with his fears and dreams as well as his relationship with Tanabe. WheneverPlanetesrisks falling into formula, the filmmakers veer off in a new direction. In a less imaginative series, when Hachimaki quits the Debris Section to try out for the experimental ship making the first voyage to Jupiter, he'd realize he'd made a mistake and go back to working and squabbling in the Debris Section. Instead, director Goro Taniguchi and his artists involve the characters in a deadly plot launched by the terrorist Space Defense Front. The extras include photographs of real space debris that's fallen to Earth and a discussion with NASA officials, who warn there may be 15,000 objects 10cm or larger orbiting the planet at speeds approaching 8 km./sec. As the fourth boxed set, many are saying that this is the last part of the series, which is not quite true. It finishes a major portion of the story, but it is then continued in three OVAs which will hopefully be brought to DVD as boxed sets themselves. This set finishes the war between the 10 Godfathers and the Spiders in a very dramatic way, but it does not end Gon's journey by far. Anyone who loves this series, I recommend reading the Manga and trying to find the OVAs. They are well worth watching.』 (The epic ending to one of the great animes) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Some people seem to think that Vol. 4 ends up splitting off into a completely different series that the first 3/4. I happen to think it is just the evolution of a truly great series in fact, it was this entire arc that got me into Hunter x Hunter at a time when I recall seeing the animation and, being spoiled by the latest technologies, overlooked this truly incredible story AND (now that I've come to appreciate it) animation. I will be getting this the second it is released. Personally, I think they need to give the Spiders their own series!』 (Enter the spiders) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『"Hunter X Hunter Volume 4" is the last volume of the shortish anime series, and it's also drastically different from the entire storyline that precedes it. Not only is it far darker and bloodier, but Kurapika and his quest for revenge become the center of attention rather than the goofy and less developed Gon -- and it's a brilliant piece of work, if a rather unsatisfying end. On a trip back to Whale Island, Gon and Killua learn of a box that Gon's father left for him -- and among the contents is a video game memory card with the dangerous, infamously rare "Greed Island" on it. The boys immediately start trying to raise money on internet auctions and casinos, as they make their way to Yorknew City. Oh, and Leorio rejoins them for the time being. Meanwhile, Kurapika has taken on a job as one of several Hunter bodyguards for a psychic Mafia girl, who is planning to attend the auction in Yorknew City. The Phantom Troupe is also interested in the Mafia's booty (not sure why), and the girl that Kurapika and his new compatriots are guarding. With Hisoka's help, Kurapika plans to find and kill the Spiders with his new power -- a series of deadly nen chains. But when the auction items vanish from the vault, Kurapika ends up facing the first of the Phantom Troupe -- but they are soon as bent on vengeance as he. Worse, his young friends have become enmeshed in the Troupe's web. Leech infestations, impalements, flesh-shredding punches, shattered bones, a man slowly eaten alive, and Kurapika's heart-squishing chain -- "Hunter X Hunter Volume 4" is a pretty gruesome affair. This is especially true because the entire arc really revolves around Kurapika's quest for revenge -- sure, there's some fluffy subplots about Gon and Killua selling stuff on the Web, but they pale by comparison. And the writers wrap the entire storyline in a murky cloak, which seems to be half mob thriller and half dark coming-of-age. They also weave in some truly astonishing fight scenes (a multi-person fight against nen ninjas) and bleakly intricate thriller storylines (Gon and Killua's capture by the Spiders); viewers also get some glimpses of the heretofore unknown Phantom Troupe, who are terrifying in their sheer power. Even the animators seemed to polish their work further, with some hauntingly shadowed, purple-toned images that are both beautiful and horrible -- the bloody ballet between Kurapika and his enemy, or the sociopathic Chrollo "conducting" terrorist attacks. The one problem would probably be that though the anime series ended here, it leaves several plot threads hanging loose. The story was picked up in some OVA episodes, but for the moment this is it. These episodes also flesh out Kurapika into the best-rounded character of the series, as well as a truly tragic figure. He's a gentle, peaceful young man who has intentionally made himself into the ultimate nen fighter, despite his hatred of death and blood. His devastation after he kills for the first time is heartbreaking. And we see more of the iron-clad determination and resourcefulness of Gon and Killua, even in the worst circumstances. There are also a new round of well-rounded, intricate supporting characters. Kurapika's ugly-but-kind friend Melody is a particular standout, and the Phantom Troupe turns out to have their own internal loyalties and personal ties. Their leader's doe eyes are rather freaky, though. "Hunter X Hunter Volume 4" is a brilliant ending to a previously solid and slow-moving series, with a tragic edge and plenty of action. Dorothy Wainwright. She is a fantasic character, extremely cool with a very dry sense of humour. Unfortunately, they didn't use her as much as they could have. The series really revolves around Roger Smith, a Negotiator who solves the problems in Paradigm City. Of course, when you have a dirty big mecha to call on when things get rough, "negotiation" with the bad guys becomes a lot easier! I was a huge fan of the movie Dark City, and there's a definite similarity in the film-noir atmosphere and the obession with memory. Batman is also an obvious influence. In fact, it's possible to list a number of Batman/film noir cliches in the characterisation: the ultra-cool lead, the stoic butler, the femme fatale (Angel), the Joker-like psychotic baddie (Beck), and the shadowy criminal mastermind behind everything. And of course there's Dorothy. There's not exactly much subtlety or even depth to the characters, really, but they fill their roles well. The often funny interactions between Roger and Dorothy alone are worth watching. However, the plot itself is a big let-down. The first series consists of mostly stand-alone episodes that hint at something deeper, but the series ends just as some of these important plot points are revealed. I was expecting the second series to continue from where the first left off, but it too wanders down side plots and stand-alone episodes, and again seems to end too abruptly. Apparently a further series was planned but never eventuated, leaving 'The Big O' with a rushed, unfinished feel. The plus side is the second series features more of Dorothy, and in a more active role. Many individual episodes are interesting enough, but it's hard not to wish they formed a more coherent, finished, whole. As it is, the series has enormous potential that it never quite fulfills. However, the cool characters and their interaction do make up for this somewhat, and it is worth seeing if you like Batman, Dark City, or sci-fi/retro anime in general.』 (A Great Anime Series.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『BIG O was a unique show, with a good concept. Having everyone in the worlds memories erased and no one knows what happened, but everyone has clued inside of their minds. It reminds me a little of the movie DARK CITY. It had a nice twist on the Giant Robot anime, instead focusing on the characters and story. The story was great, you couldn't stop watching. All the twists and turns along the way in search of the what happened forty years ago. The story and characters were the best part of the show. The music was great, the animation was pretty good, and the action was good. The ending was great, but I still have no idea what really was going on. That's why I wish Cartoon Network had agreed to a season 3. I guess it just wasn't popular in both Japan and the USA. Overall I think BIG O is under appreciated by most anime fans. Everyone should check out this series』 (It's showtime!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Imagine a crumbling domed Gotham City where everyone has amnesia, and Batman fights evildoers using a giant black mecha. That's a fairly basic description of "The Big O," a strange and action-packed anime with an art deco style, a noir atmosphere and lots of giant robots and strange conspiracies. This is no simplistic action show -- there's a deep central mystery that each episode revolves around, and some deeper meditations on the nature of memory. Negotiator Roger Smith is hired to get the kidnapped daughter of a client back... only to discover that "Dorothy" is an android, who asks him to protect her. When he starts investigating, Roger learns of her "sister" -- vast mecha "Dorothy 1" -- who can only be stopped by his own mecha, the Megadeus called "Big O." But when Dorothy vanishes during the attack, Roger must find her before a gang of thieves do. With the help of Dorothy and his faithful butler Norman (and occasionally hardened cop Dastun), Roger uses Big O to deal with a series of increasingly bizarre mysteries. Among his problems: a giant electric eel, a skeletal mecha controlled by the psycho ex-reporter "Schwarzwald," a billionaire's missing son, a piano-playing android, a "sea titan" in a flooded city, a mysterious cat with horrifying origins, a Heaven's Day attack, and a mysterious woman haunting Dastun's dreams. Things take a darker turn in the last few episodes, especially since Paradigm City's strange past becomes the most important part. Roger is hired to give a severance check to Schwarzwald, but becomes enmeshed in his plans for Paradigm City -- and witnesses the unveiling of another Megadeus, Big Duo. And when a series of murders are committed by a red-cloaked figure -- who leaves Big O's motto "Cast In The Name of God, Ye Not Guilty" at each crime -- Roger starts to suspect that Dorothy may be involved. And even more confusing, Roger is suffering flashbacks of whatever happened forty years ago... which may be even more ghastly than anyone suspects. "The Big O" is one of those series that drips with lots of influences -- it hasa lovely classic noir feeling, more than a hint of "Batman," and some tinges of Isaac Asimov (R. Dorothy?). And even the animation has a style reminiscent of art deco, with lots of long clean lines and dark shapes -- even the vast Megadeuses and other mecha have them. But the real beauty of "The Big O" is in the storytelling: the individual plots are reminiscent of a noir detective's adventures, but with a weird sci-fi twist -- a mad journalist in a haunted subway, a mad geneticist, and giant robots that fly and swim. It's also graced with some explosive slam-bang action, intriguing hi-tech gadgets, and lots of wry humour (Dorothy sets off an elevator's weight alarm) and dialogue ("Did you say 'mama'? As in your mother?"). And running under each episode is the haunting question of what happened to Paradigm forty years ago. The plots drop hints about floating memories and something terrible that turned Paradigm City into a series of half-ruined boroughs. This is especially true in the final episode, which briefly shows the horrifying past. Dashing playboy Roger Smith is a pretty likable hero -- charismatic, charming, a bit lacking in chivalry at times, but ultimately quite heroic and kind. Dorothy's emotionless attitude makes a nice counterpoint, but she shows some signs of becoming more human ("Even I feel like playing the blues sometimes"). And for the true noir feel, there's a mysterious femme fatale named Angel who keeps getting Roger into trouble, and the likably efficient butler/cook/technician Norman. While it appears to be just another mecha anime on the surface, "The Big O" is actually a clever sci-fi/noir series with underlying conspiracies and haunting mysteries.』 (Big O! Is it the elegance, the wonderful story, the yaoi, or the rumors....Well how about we start with the basis of the story... A boy enters his sixth grade class room to be greeted by his teacher with that scene you see that this boy is greatly independent. He instantly develops his first fan girl yukio(just first off I want to apologize I'm American and I also have horrible spelling. So I will butcher these names.) She falls for him instantly...He being in sixth grade and disliking making friends, He could care less that she likes him. When leaving school the teacher confronts them and expresses her concern for him and he acts nonchalant and runs off. He meets an adult who grabs him by the arm and forces an conversation(gently forces) within that converstation he confesses that he was friends with the boys brother. The sixth grade boy ritzuka's brother seimi was murdered. So naturally the boy is taken with this stranger. He goes off with the adult to make memories(taking photos). While taking photos they bring the story line in about the fighters and sacrifices also with the fighters names. The strangers name is soubi(which I can spell ^^) His code name is beloved who was seimi's fighter unit, and seimi was soubi's sacrifice. Sacrifices and fighters basically are this. A fighter uses words to cast spells such as "rip" "tear" and even as complex as "retreat as birds carried off...." The spells are enchanting to hear and the art that follows the spells are wonderful. And sacrifices take the damage for the fighter unit. When they are hurt they are restricted to some extent, arms chained down, collars chaining the victims. When they are completely restricted they lose. Well upon their talk they encounter another fighter unit who wants the sixth grade to come with them, soubi fights the people and denies them taking him. The boy can't figure out within the fight ,who the bad guy is if it's soubi or if it's the other fighters. But upon the next fight he sees that their organization was that who killed his brother. The boy is growing up and maturing and his mom is trying to prevent it by claiming multi personalities. If I give to much more of the story it will be spoilers but it gets much better The art of this show is so wonderful. The voices are in Japanese. I dislike subbing a lot of I didn't mind it in this case. But there is a side bit of the soubi being twenty and male falling for ritzuka a sixth grade male. Yoai and illegal but it's not bothersome. It's kind-a a key part of the story but the story really does not dwell on it. It's more so as if they are close friends who try to protect each other and they kiss only a few times in the story they are both androgynous so it won't offend those. No nudity. The story died on episode thirteen...it was sad ended no warning and should no have ended the manga kept up. Anime died. No sign of any more to come but in the original series imported from japan I got back a few years ago(well I borrowed from a friend.) on the last episode it said something about fundings died and could not continue so rumor is they will pick up later but dunno when. This series is great! Not to mention that unlike other "supernatural" shows (some of which I could mention), it's extremely funny - sort of like the twisted brainchild of "Psych" and "Supernatural" converted into anime form. But enough banter, let's start the review! Story: 9/10 - A paranormal entheusiast, Mai Taniyama, becomes indebted to the narcissistic Kazuya Shibuya ("Naru" for short) after breaking one of his expensive cameras. Sort of basic, but the separate cases each offer enough twists and turns to satisfy most anime fans. Depth: 10/10 - The story starts off simply, but continues to grow in depth and, to an extent, emotion. How you get to learn about each character like you learn about people in real life - one step at a time - scores extra points, at least in my opinion. After all, big blow-out reveals are always long-winded. Characters: 10/10 - Like I said, the characters don't show much depth at the beginning, but in time you get to know everything about them. Plus, unlike some other anime, the reveals aren't completely generic, either (Ayako's parents, doctors? Who would have thought?). The interactions between the characters also make for some great comic moments. Entertainment: 10/10 - This anime is one of the most entertaining series that I've seen in a long time. It ranges from funny to serious to downright horrifying, and the changes are fluid enough that the audience is going to be glued to the edge of their seats throughout a whole file. Overall: 39/40 - Almost perfect... but not quite. My only major gripe is that they never finished serializing the rest of the manga. After all, they completely forgot Volumes 10 and 11! Maybe they just didn't get released in time. Who knows? Either way, it's a good watch for anyone who's interested in the supernatural.』 (naru) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『unreal fun and humour with scary stories, naru deserves every mean comment but he's still such a sweetie, =p i'm only dissapointed that there is not more』 (What's that sound?) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『For the record, "Ghost Hunt" is an anime series based on a manga series based on a novel series. Surprising, it doesn't suffer in translation. And "Ghost Hunt: The Complete Series" does an excellent job bringing home elaborate and genuinely eerie scares, based on curses, possessions, psychic powers and the occasional roaming ghost. It can be rather slow-moving at times and some questions are left unanswered (just who is "dream Naru"?), but it has a winning mixture of comedy, horror and suspense. A handsome young man, Kazuya Shibuya, wanders in while Mai and her friends are telling ghost stories -- and later Mai encounters him in the seemingly haunted part of her school. But since Mai accidentally injured his assistant Lin and demolished a camera, he allows her to work for him as compensation -- he's a "ghost hunter" hired by the school. And Kazuya (soon nicknamed "Naru") starts rubbing Mai the wrong way with his cold attitude. They're soon joined by some professional exorcists: slinky Shinto priestess Ayako, renegade Buddhist monk Hosho, psychic Masako, and Catholic priest John Brown . And more and more odd things happen -- windows shatter, chairs move and doors jam. Is there a rational explanation for the strange events, or is this part of the school really haunted? The little group soon find themselves dealing with many strange cases: a house oppressed by an evil doll and the ghosts of tormented children; a high school whose students and teachers are being tormented by strange apparitions and accidents, pointing to a lethal curse; a Christmastime visit to a Catholic church haunted by the spirit of a child, and a ghost who likes to drench parkgoing lovers with water. Then things take a darker turn when the gang is called in to deal with a school haunted by horrifying specters and fires, which are connected to a student's suicide; a vast labyrinthine house with a bloodthirsty secret that is still claiming victims; and finally a seaside hotel whose inhabitants have been possessed by vengeful spirits of the dead, who are determined to stop any spiritualists who come around. Even worse, Naru has become possessed as well. The supernatural stuff in "Ghost Hunt" is pretty intense stuff -- howling ghosts, haunted wells (Sadako, is that you?!), voodooesque curses, onmyodo, exorcisms (complete with sizzling holy water), fox spirits, zombies, ouija, and a creepy possessed doll. Those who like a lot of action and melodrama will undoubtedly find all this to be rather slow, since every episode is a sort of supernatural detective story. The overall series has a nice haunted house atmosphere without many showy "boo!" moments, although the last couple arcs get flashier in their horror (bloodbaths! Zombies!). Instead we get a general atmosphere of overhanging dread, psychic/supernatural trivia (such as those wooden effigy dolls) and eerie Japanese spectors (including a buggy-eyed ghost that pulls a scythe out of its mouth). But fortunately the writers keep it from getting too grim with regular doses of humor, such as the rock'n'roll monk being swamped by fangirls, or a romantic rivalry popping up between Mai and Masako. The big problem is that the otherwise satisfying open ending leaves some questions unanswered, such as Mai and Naru's budding relationship and the mystery of "dream Naru." Just what is going on there? Mai is a likable heroine -- she's hardworking, honest and resilient, and seems to have some amazing psychic powers she never knew about. Not to mention that she seems to have some budding romance with her new infuriating boss. Naru is intriguing as well -- a chilly, sarcastic teenage genius, but he has a lighter side that comes out in less stressful circumstances (his "talking pet coin"). And the supporting cast is pretty good as well -- Ayako takes most of the series to reveal her unique skills, but is a kind woman overall, while Masako seems rather devious and stalkerish. Hosho (or "Monk" as he's constantly addressed) is a hilarious combination of rock'n'roll star and powerful Buddhist monk, while John is a mellow, sweet-tempered Aussie who serves as the volatile group's peacemaker (as well as its strongest exorcist). And Lin serves as a silent enigma through most of the series, but is revealed to be an essentially kind and powerful man. Ghosts, curses and bizarre occurrences abound in "Ghost Hunt: The Complete Series." It moves rather slowly at times, but has the right balance of comedy, suspense and horror.』 (ghost hunt dvd) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Nice box set. The team tries to solve the cases in order to discern if they're truly hauntings, psychical phenomenon, or just hoaxes concocted by thrill seekers. The series is a nice mix of the storylines of psychical research into the spiritual world and the need to believe in the unusual with only faith, the episodes are mostly stories that come in multi-parts meaning that a story of a school haunting will last about three to four episodes instead of just ending with one episode which is very good since some of these stories need more than just one episode to explain whats going on with the case. The video quality and audio of the series is wide-screen and clear and sharp no distortions or blurriness to complain about and as with most of the anime coming from Funimation the voice cast for both the English/Japanese actors/actresses were great for their character roles, the extras are decent but not much to really shout about but for the price very forgivable. >,Artist Not Providedprice: Bandai Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Beautiful Trainwreck) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『My-HiME fits the description of 'beautiful trainwreck' better than any other anime I've watched. It starts out as a high school slice-of-life series, with a lot of ecchi humour, even the 'monster of the week' battles providing far more in the way of amusement (a panty/bra stealing creature, for example) than danger. Then, in the last twelve episodes or so, the drama side gets going, which results in it turning into a less gruesome version of Battle Royale, with robots added on top. The two differing sections of the story do end up blending well together - the first part providing time for viewers to become attached to the characters - but it was certainly strange to see a light-hearted anime take such a dark turn... If nothing else, you have to praise the visual and audio aspects of the series. It has lovely art and very good animation, the character designs (the faces, short skirts, big breasts and super model female cast) and bright colours unsurprisingly reminding me of Code Geass. The soundtrack is mostly stellar, too, with the music Goddess known as Yuki Kajiura pulling out one of her overall weaker (compared to her best work) but by no means poor collections of music. Even the English voice acting impressed me, Mai's voice fitting her fiery yet loveable and cute personality like a glove... However, where My-HiME falls short, and what makes me class it as a trainwreck, is its story. Put simply, the story is about a group of twelve girls and their loved ones. Each of the twelve girls (referred to as 'HiME') has a different power, some being elemental and others being the ability to use weapons, and each can summon a mecha/monster (referred to as a 'Child' if it obeys a human and an 'Orphan' if it doesn't) to fight with them. Mai, the female lead, moves to the prestigious Fuka Academy (which accommodates elementary-high school ages, and has dormitories for both genders), along with her younger brother at the start, and there she meets and interacts with the other girls with powers and her new classmates. Sadly, there isn't much actual plot covered in the 26 episodes. The first half focuses heavily on characterization, fan service and comical goings on. The second half focuses on characterization and battles, each battle resulting in a new death. In between all of this, not a lot beyond the basic premise of the story gets a look in. This resulted in very little of the plot making sense, and the final episode was a failure (partly) because of this. Why were the 'Child' and 'Orphan' creatures in existence? How could they be summoned by certain people? What was the character reminiscent of Kaoru from Evangelion (Naji)? Why did the HiME ritual occur every 300 years? None of the above questions, or numerous others I have, receive answers within the series. When the final episode rolled around and the world was saved from destruction in predictable fashion, I was left with a blank expression on my face, reflecting on the many questions without answers and with disappointment in the place of the answers I desired. Apart from its production values, what saved My-HiME, for me at least, was the quality of its characterization. Over the course of the series, you learn all about Mai. Her relationship with her brother is explored and plays a major role, and as a result of an involving love quadruple I came to care about her as a person, as well as her likeable main love interest. And, though the other cast members didn't get anywhere near as much time because of the amount of them - the number reminding me of Negima's never-ending character list to begin with - enough of the personalities and back-stories of those that mattered got covered for me to become emotionally involved with many of them. The characters laughed and cried, and I was able to feel their emotions; never feeling disconnected. But, switching back to the story, the final episode almost ruined the good that came before. If you're the sort of person that cringes when you see deus ex machina twists, your face won't be a pretty sight after finishing the anime because it's practically non-stop deus ex machina in the last episode. Without wanting to spoil too much, what happened at the end of My-HiME is equivalent to every emotional, heart-wrenching moment of a story being made worthless, destroying any attachment one has to the many moving scenes included. Even though I enjoyed what came before immensely, I felt like time slowed down at the end - it was a sad way to end such an absorbing title. To sum it up, Sunrise know how to please anime fans; men/otaku in particular. They keep the skirts high, the chests large, the comedy amusing and are masters at pulling away at the heart strings of viewers with dramatic action, or just plain old fashioned drama. They know how to make up for what would normally by anime ruining flaws. If not for the poor excuse of a story and even worse attempt at an ending, if only for enjoyment alone, I'd be rating it higher, but it wasn't to be. Instead, I'll give it a solid 8/10, thinking of it as something of a guilty pleasure.』 (Comedy Drama) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This Anime is a half and half. Being original doesn't always mean attracting more people, though. It starts out ok and gets boring at the middle. It is easy-going amime, and relies on so many cliches you can find everywhere in amime world, especially in charactor settings; a cool hunk, a calm beauty, and a cute little girl in important posts in high school(surprise?), brother/sister complex stereotypes, a girl almost fell into the wrong guy, etc..and I am PERSONALLY sick of finding a mysterious charactor watching every event from the rooftop. But my patience finally paid off when I watched final 10 episodes. It gets more serious and enjoyable. There are good twists in both storyline and character developments. Artwork here is not so special. Someone mentioned that mechas are differnt from ordinary robot amimes, but don't expect something unique as Tachikoma(Ghost in the shell s.a.c). They are mixture of Japanese monsters and "Ranger Series" type of mecha, and one of monsters' heads is designed after Evangelion (not TV series, and seemingly not avarable in U.S. At least not in the box set) I would say, almost shamelessly. The creator probably tried to show some respect to Eva...I hope. I found human characters were more interesting, despite of all the cliche. Kuga is stylish, and Mai, the main charactor is somewhat realistic both in appearance and personality so I feel like she is much sexier than "out-of-nowhere" amime boobs. She was one of the reasons I kept watching. Music is nice (not to mention garbage songs), but failed to create its own world. It can go anywhere other than My-HiME. Some out of place, working better towards the end. I also have a minor complaint about how to show emotions in each character. For instance, there is a moment one of the characters tells something shocking to Mai. You probably want to see Mai's face right at the moment the words were spoken, but instead, amime waits for the person to finish the line, then shows change in Mai's face, timing too late. In some ways, this amime is similar to Shana; Monster hunting accompanied by another moster, not much deep thougts behind, (at least in its first half), not so great at emotional expressions, music out of place (Shana has better music, though) and you need to wait quite a while to get hooked. If you like amime in genaral, however, you would probably like it, just like I did. A safer choice than Shana. I found love triangle was more interesting in Shana though. And if you really want to enjoy the show, you should probably forget about everything I said. This is not going to be a waste for a amime fan. Just in case, if you are looking for something little more thoughtful, I recommend Rozen Maiden, or watch both to compare.』 (great anime flick) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『awesome snime flick with both good an bad mix in rather interesting rather long but well written the voices an art was super well worth buyin I rather enjoy watching the whole seris great cast of voices..』 (great package) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『my order came complete and as scheduled plus it did not have even a scratch on the cover.』 『Studio: Infinity Resources Inc Release Date: 10/07/2008』 『Himemeans "princess" in Japanese, but in the broadcast seriesMy-Hime(2004), it's also an acronym forHighly-advancedMaterializingEquipment--or certain girls who possess supernatural abilities. Mai Tokiha and her brother Takumi discover their new school, Fuka Academy, has become the focus of the battle against the Orphans: malevolent monsters who can only be defeated by the HiME. Each HiME has a "Child," a sort of half-mechacreature that fights with her against the bizarre Orphans. Mai discovers she's a powerful HiME, just in time to enter the no-holds- barred struggle against the agents of the sinister, all-powerful Searrs Foundation, who've secretely been summoning the Orphans. That storyline comes to a premature end in Episode #15 and another, related but even more confusing plot begins.My-Himefeatures a large cast; some of the members are sympathetic and even endearing, but the muddled story requires so much exposition, the audience doesn't get a chance to know them. An even bigger problem is that the filmmakers can't decide if they're making a magical girl vs. monster adventure, ashojo(girls') high school romance, or a fan-service farce. The battles against the grotesque Orphans are violent and loaded with CG special effects, but they're juxtaposed with cheesecake illustrations, discussions about bras, and nosebleed jokes. Panty shots and close-ups of cleavage follow tearful romantic declarations. Viewers can't tell if they're supposed to cheer, snicker, or sniffle. I won't go into the plot since some of the reviewers already did a great job already but I just wanted to state that individuals should give this anime a chance. This anime is geared for everyone except little children who may may find it unsettling that the dolls fight each other or may not understand why they fight to become "Alice". This anime is a drama but there are many parts that will have you laughing out loud. My only problem with the series- I wish it had a better ending.』 (Good second season story) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I enjoyed this Anime collection very much. You can find other reviews that will tell you all you could want to know about the story and content. So in summation it was amusing and enjoyable. The first and now second season of this anime left me wanting a third season. The story is clearly not over.』 (One Of The Best Despite Its Flaws) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Rozen Maiden: Träumend is the second season of Rozen Maiden. In a nutshell, a powerful mage named Rozen from the 18th century (revealed in the manga as Count St Germain) constructed seven dolls and imbued them with a living soul known as the Rosa Mystica. Their mission is to battle each other in what is known as the Alice Game, the winner obtaining the loser's Rosa Mystica until the last one standing becomes Alice, a real girl of unmatched beauty and purity. To help them, it is expected they will acquire human partners they can use as a power source for the unique weapons and tactics each one possesses, but it appears this is optional as some of the dolls appear to not have human partners. The first six of seven dolls in their order of creation are: 1. Suigintou 2. Kanaria 3. Suiseiseki 4. Souseiseki 5. Shinku 6. Hinaichigo In Rozen Maiden: Träumend, it appears the seventh doll calls herself Barasuishou, but truth is far different than first appearance. Rozen Maiden: Träumend is really not for the kiddies. Though it is very light and humorous, by Episode 7 the atmosphere takes a solid turn to the dark and the body count starts to rise when three of these gothic lolita dolls are driven to kill the others within the Alice game while the other three desperately tryto protect themselves and each other. One of the death scenes is so moving and so poignant, I have had male hard core anime fans confess that an anime moved them to tears. My only complaints about Rozen Maiden: Träumend are the same I have with most anime. 1. Because the funding is iffy, the writers write their plots on the fly keeping the main points and creating many little inconsistencies in the minor details. The more minor details they mess up, the more the story loses credibility even though it may remain true to the main storyline. The more you mess up, the more retcom you have to do in future stories to correct the inconsistencies. 2. Japanese anime does not hesitate to use Christian symbols and churches as locales, but their understanding of the worldview is incredibly naive. In Rozen Maiden: Träumend, Christianity is used more as a gothic symbol of death. 3. A caricature of English romance literature is having the two people stare at each others eyes and repeat their names. That happens a lot of times in anime and a lot in Rozen Maiden: Träumend. If you cut out every scene where Jun and Shinku repeat each others names back and forth to convey emotion (despair, affection, apology, etc.), the entire anime would have been about two episodes shorter. 4. If you are going to have major characters die, their death has got to mean something and can't be wiped away by mere platitudes that are given as shallow and unconvincing explanations. Yes, it's anime, but if you are going to address the big topics (fate, death, responsibility, purpose), you had better come up with some substantial answers other than a shallow paradigm that's 3,000 miles wide and only 3 inches deep. All in all, I would still recommend Rozen Maiden: Träumend to anyone who is interested. Just be aware that though I found the anime to be outstanding, it isn't perfect.』 (Wow! I really enjoyed the second season a lot! Really good character development, less of Junta and overall enjoyable!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Finally, the long awaited complete set of "Rozen Maiden: Träumend" is here! A 12-episode animated television series created by PEACH-PIT who are known for anime and manga such as "DearS", "Di Gi Charat", "Shugo Chara!" and "Zombie-Loan". The animated series is directed by Kou Matsuo (known for his storyboard work for anime such as "Sola", "Witch Hunter Robin", "Mobile Suit Gundam 00" and "Cardcaptor Sakura") and character designs are by Kumi Ishii (known for work on "Naruto", "Heat Guy J", "Ichigo 100%" and "Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie"). The second season takes place not long after the events of the first. The dolls are now trying to enjoy their happy lives but unfortunately, Shinku starts to have nightmares and it appears the remaining sisters/dolls will be coming and that can only mean the beginning of the "Alice Games". The Alice game is simply when the dolls must square off against each other with one left standing and will fulfill their father's wish of the final doll becoming Alice. Alice - Shinku vs. Barasuishou and Suigintou. The conclusion of "Rozen Maiden: Träumend". VIDEO&AUDIO: "Rozen Maiden: Träumend - Complete Set" is an anime series that sports a lot of colors. For the most part, this is a TV animated series and of course, television series in Japan are created in a short deadline and not as much detail. But for the most part, the majority of the series takes place inside Jun's homeor total darkness, so background art is not as prominent but you do get scenes with lush, beautiful painted scenery and backgrounds. If anything, more attention was put on the characters and the dolls in battle. It's also important to emphasize that this is a television series and not an OAV or film. So, production quality is going to much lower. But overall, I enjoyed the character designs for the animated series and the story of "Rozen Maiden: Träumend" made things much more enjoyable for me. As for audio, the English dub is presented in English Dolby Digital and the Japanese language in Stereo. The series is at the most part, all dialogue with some scenes sporting battles (this is more towards the later half of the series) between the Rozen Maiden dolls. I listened to both audio soundtracks and both are well-done. SPECIAL FEATURES: "Rozen Maiden: Träumend - Complete Set" comes with the following special features: DISC 1: * Textless OP theme and Geneon Trailers DISC 2: * Textless Ending theme and Geneon Trailers DISC 3: * Japanese TV CM's and Geneon Trailers JUDGMENT CALL: The final complete set for "Rozen Maiden: Träumend" (the second season) has arrived in the US and I'm quite thrilled that FUNimation has released the series as a complete set. After the first two volumes were released in America through Geneon in 2007, due to Geneon's corporate situation, "Rozen Maiden: Träumend" was among many titles that were canceled. Fortunately, in 2008, Geneon and FUNimation Entertainment announced an agreement to distribute select titles in North America and while Geneon has the license, FUNimation Entertainment will have the exclusive rights for the sales and distribution for the titles which include "Rozen Maiden: Träumend". The concept of living dolls may seem a bit freaky for some people but in Japan, there is a large collector-based for "Volks" dolls. As there are many guys who collect action figures and mecha machines in Japan (and also in the US), the Volks dolls are quite an accomplishment for collectors who need to build them and in the end result, these dolls are well-crafted and quite beautiful. Of course, in America, the thought of dolls coming alive are seen in horror films ("Chucky" anyone?) and I for one, have always thought of dolls coming alive to be horrifying (yes, as a youngster, I threw out my sister's dolls because I thought they were possessed). But overall, the concept of "Rozen Maiden" has never scared me or freaked me out and I have to admit, "Rozen Maiden: Träumend" was a much darker series than its predecessor and I have to admit that I enjoyed the overall storyline and this concept of how the dolls must fight to the death for the purpose of being "Alice". It's hard to deny the cuteness of the series and their own character traits. Where this series could have been cliche and annoying, overall their own personal quirks is what makes the series so fun. I really had fun watching this series. With "Rozen Maiden: Träumend", you get a good balance of lighthearted humor and action. Whereas the first series focused on Jun and how the dolls have helped him overcome his "hikkimori", this series features on character development of the dolls and how quickly they are put into a position that they don't want to be.They just want to be happy but because their creator has put together this "Alice Game", they can't bow out and resist. They must fight. In the end, I found "Rozen Maiden: Träumend" to be an enjoyable, cute and humorous anime series. The lighthearted fun carries on for a little over half of the second series but it quickly becomes serious and more intense. But for the most part, the whole series held my attention with each episode and I fount that very cool! But now after watching this second season, I want more! One can only hope that we get the two episode OAV "Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre" released soon in the US (this OAV supposedly gives us a look back of why Suigintou and Shinku do not get along) and hopefully we see a new series to continue the adventures of the Rozen Maiden dolls. "Rozen Maiden: Träumend" is definitely a series worth recommending!』 『 Stills fromRozen Maiden Traumend: Box Set(Click for larger image)
