His treacherous quest will take him from the terrifying heights of Muscle Tower to the darkest depths of the deep blue sea. But with the Flying Nimbus under his feet and Bulma’s Dragon Radar leading the way – there’s nothing mighty Goku can’t handle. With a dangerous new adversary out to get him, this will be Goku’s most dangerous adventure yet. The sinister Red Ribbon Army, led by cigar-chomping Commander Red, is determined to seize the seven Dragon Balls and use them to conquer the world! Watch as colonels, generals, ninjas, android pirates, and giant pink monsters use every dirty trick in the book to stop Goku from getting his hands on the magic Dragon Balls! Enjoy the next chapter in the saga of this legendary warrior with Dragon Ball: Season Two! The second season of the hit fantasyDragon Ballconcludes the story line involving pint-sized Emperor Pilaf and focuses on Goku's battles with the nasty officers of the Red Ribbon Army. The evil General Red wants the magic Dragon Balls to make him ruler of the world; Goku wants the Four Star Ball as a souvenir of his adoptive grandfather, who owned it. Chuckling merrily as he goes from battle to battle, the irrepressible Goku dispatches the minions of General White in Muscle Tower and befriends android Number Eight (whose appearance and kindly demeanor may remind American viewers ofMilton the Monster). After a visit to Bulma, Goku tackles effete General Blue and a robot pirate on a hidden island. Season 2 ends as Goku challenges Korin, the cat who controls magical, strength-giving water atop a precipitous tower. Goku needs the water to grow stronger and defeat assassin Tao Pai Pai, who murdered his friend Oopa's father, Bora.
Although Goku's adventures will delight legions of fans, these episodes include some of the most egregious stereotypes in theDragon Ballfranchise: Oopa and Bora are clichéd American Indians in war paint and feathers, while General Blue minces and swishes (his dialogue in the subtitles is quite offensive). Parts of the episodes set at Muscle Tower were recut into the fourthDragon Ballmovie,The Path to Power(Saikyou e no Michi, 1996), also known as "The Way to Become the Strongest." At the end of his path, the most powerful opponent he has ever faced awaits - the evil Saiyan Prince Vegeta! This Dragon Ball Season Set is the definitive collection! One of the most popular franchises in anime history,Dragon Ballbegan in 1984 as a manga by Akira Toriyama inShonen Jump.Dragon Ball Z(1989), the second TV adaptation, is the most beloved: it ran for 291 episodes--more thanDragon Ball(1986) andDragon Ball GT(1996) combined. Over the years, the program has introduced countless boys to the world of Japanese animation. The first season re-introduces the main characters and sets up a new threat. Goku learns he's not an Earthling, but a Saiyan from the planet Vegeta. Only three other Saiyans survive, all of them extremely powerful and destructive. Goku destroys Raditz with the help of Piccolo, but dies in the process. He spends much of the season training in the Other World with King Kai. Piccolo takes over training Goku's son Gohan, anticipating he will have to face the remaining Saiyans, Nappa and Vegeta. These episodes set the pattern for the combination of martial arts training, fantasy-battles and slapstick comedy that make the series so popular. The storyline rambles, with lots of digressions, repeats, and false endings--none of which bother the fans. AlthoughDragon Ball Zhas been released previously in the US, Funimation pulled out all the stops for this edition. The entire series has been remastered from the original prints, and the Japanese language track is included for the first time. (Goku and Krillin have higher-pitched, younger voices than they do in the American dub.) ForDragon Ball Zfans, this version clearly supercedes all previous ones. Left alone after his grandfather’s death, this unusual boy is happy to spend his days hunting and eating and eating some more. But everything changes on the day he meets Bulma – a bossy, blue-haired beauty with boys on the brain. Together, they set out to track down the seven magic Dragon Balls and make the wish that will change their lives forever. And that’s just the beginning! Goku also spends some time on Turtle Island where he and Krillin study martial arts under the legendary Master Roshi. The old hermit may not look like much, but if his new pupils can find him a woman, he’ll make sure they’re ready to rumble at the upcoming World MartialArts Tournament! Season One of Dragon Ball is a must-have for everyone from the die-hard fan to the next generation of collectors. In 1986, the animated adaptation of Akira Toriyama's mangaDragon Balldebuted on Japanese television, launching one of the most popular franchises in anime history.Dragon Ballintroduced a special mixture of male bonding, rigorous training, martial arts fighting, slapstick comedy, and sci-fi action that scored a huge hit with boys and led to the follow-upsDragon Ball ZandDragon Ball GT--and numerous imitators. A small boy from another planet, Goku commands super-human strength, but he was raised in the remote mountains by an old man and he knows little of the world. Goku meets Bulma, who's trying to assemble the seven magical Dragon Balls so she can wish for a boyfriend. The naive boy and the hot-tempered girl join forces, then form a quarrelsome alliance with Oolong, the shape-shifting pig, and Yamcha, a dashing bandit with a metamorphic familiar, Puar. The heroes compete for the Dragon Balls against the pint-sized Emperor Pilaf (who wants to rule the world). After defeating Pilaf, Goku goes to study martial arts with Master Roshi, a lecherous but extraordinarily skilled old man. Goku and fellow student Krillin develop formidable powers that they use in the World Martial Arts Tournament. These episodes set the pattern forDragon Balland numerous other series: humans and creatures of all description train endlessly, then gather to pound the ramen out of each other before an audience. Naturally, the hero wins in an extended final match. The first adventures are lighter in tone and more broadly comic than the beginning of the darker Red Ribbon Saga. For years, the first13 episodes ofDragon Ballwere only available in the U.S. in the heavily edited setSaga of Goku, to the chagrin of the fans. Following their successful release of the completeDragon Ball ZandDragon Ball GT, Funimation is presentingDragon Balluncut and digitally restored. The series probably looks better now than it did when it premiered, as it was reportedly filmed in 16mm. Note: The sight of the prepubescent Goku and Krillin running around naked doesn't bother Japanese audiences. Can our heroes resist the wizard’s dark magic and battle their way through this host of villains before time runs out? With each passing second, more energy is gathered for the sleeping Majin Buu.And should this creature of pure evil be awakened, all life—everywhere—will be extinguished! Season Eight contains the complete Babidi and Majin Buu sagas.
Stills fromDragon Ball Z: Season Eight(Click for larger image) The eighth and penultimate season ofDragon Ball Zpits the Z Fighters, the Supreme Kai, and his attendant Kibito against the evil wizard Babidi, who hopes to release the monster Buu, which his father Bibidi created. (The names are apparently a back-handed salute to Walt Disney'sCinderella.) Goku, who's technically dead but still visting from the Other World, joins Vegeta and Gohan in the initial fights against Babidi's minions. As the battles escalate, Babidi use Vegeta's overweening pride to entrap the Saiyan Prince and turn him against his allies. It's all Goku can do to win Vegeta back, and the energy loosed in their stand-off enables Babidi to free Buu. Instead of one of the over-muscled behemoths the Z Fighters usually tackle, Buu is an obnoxious, infantile creature who looks like a sumo wrestler molded out of pink marshmallows. But he's incredibly powerful and resilient: even the Saiyans can't defeat him. Goku realizes only one warrior can destroy Buu: Goten and Trunks in their Super-Saiyan forms must fuse to form anüber-hero. The boys initially balk, as the Dance of Fusion looks and feels silly. But Gohan and Picollo whip them into shape and the formidable Gotenks appears.Season 8offers much more action and excitement than the World Tournament story that takes up most ofSeason 7. But unlike the earlierDBZadventures, theBabidi&Majin Buu Sagasend on a cliffhanger, with the fate of the Earth and its inhabitants hanging in the balance. Usually ships in 24 hours Tomoki’s life was normal until a wish-granting angelic android named Ikaros fell from the sky and started calling him master! Of course, thanks to his raging teenage hormones, most of Tomoki’s wishes have something to do with panties. And that makes things pretty complicated, because one simple wish can lead to a rampaging robot made out of frilly undergarments. One tiny wish can turn bloomers into bombs capable of blowing up entire neighborhoods! If Tomoki doesn’t learn to control his impulses around Ikaros, and be more careful with his wishes, the chaos will only get crazier. Luckily, even with such a dirty mind, Tomoki’s heart is in the right place. His hands, however, are a completely different story. The Limited Edition version comes in a collectible, rigid art box. Based on the manga by Suu Minazuki,Heaven's Lost Property(2009) is another example of the nerd-meets-submissive-beauty genre, in the tradition ofChobitsandSteel Angel Kurumi. Teenage Tomoki, who lives alone in rural Japan while his parents are away, insists "there's nothing like peace and quiet." He loses any hope of either when an explosion brings down beautiful, scantily clad Ikaros, who announces she's a "Pet-Class Angeloid." Tomoki is now her master, and she lives only to fulfill his desires. The presence of the buxom Ikaros gets Tomoki in trouble with his best friend and next-door neighbor Sohara. Nymph, a second Angeloid, arrives and reveals that Ikaros is really Uranus Queen, a terrible warrior, like Kurumi. Numerous contretemps ensue before things get sorted out more or less satisfactorily. Unfortunately, Tomoki comes across as a much less sympathetic character than Tenchi or Keitaro inLove, Hina: he's a lecher, a peeping tom, a slacker, and a fussbudget, and giving him occasional lines about friendship doesn't make up for his loutish behavior. But the series draws viewers for its many jiggle shots and panty jokes, rather than nuanced characters or plot subtleties. The popularity ofHeaven's Lost Propertyand the related second TV series, OAV, and theatrical feature suggests that there's a large audience of lonely, hormonal adolescents eager to indulge their fantasies. Meet Light Yagami, a brilliant but bored high school student whose life is changed when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami, or god of death, named Ryuk. When Light discovers that any human whose name is written in the book dies, he vows to use its power to rid the world of evil. But every action has its consequences, and Light soon finds himself in a life or death battle of wits with the mysterious genius detective called L. Humanity itself becomes the battleground to determine what form of justice will prevail!
Bilingual (English/Japanese) Some teenagers walk around with a chip on their shoulder: Light Yagami, the alienated hero of the macabre fantasy-adventureDeath Note(2006) has aShinigami(god of death) named Ryuk hovering over his shoulder. Although he's one of the top-ranked high school students in Japan, Light is repulsed by the lack of justice he sees in the world--until he finds Ryuk's notebook, the Death Note. If anyone writes the name of a human in the book, that person dies minutes later. After testing the Death Note's powers, Light launches a grandiose vigilante campaign to rid the world of criminals to create his vision of a perfect society. But the baffling string of deaths inevitably attracts the attention of the police, who turn the case over to the secretive master crime solver known only as L. Although he's as brilliant as he is arrogant, Light finds himself hard-pressed by L in their deadly game of cat and mouse. He tries to use Misa, a teen idol who's acquired her own Death Note andShinigami, to destroy L, but is outfoxed by his nemesis. To ensure Light does nothing without his knowledge, L has them handcuffed together. Although it begins slowly,Death Notegets better with each installment, as the stakes grow higher in the duel of wits between Light and L. Director Tetsuro Araki plays up their physical differences: Light is cool, handsome and well-groomed; slovenly L seems to think with his twitchy bare feet as well as his redoubtable brain. Neither character is particularly likeable initially, but they become intriguing as the viewer gets to know them.
