(Tenjho Tenge)
『This is a good title to own if you enjoy fight scenes that aren't just a bunch of action lines. The characters are all over the top bad asses in their own regard making a fun, well rounded action show that keeps you on the edge while providing an abundant amount of fan service.』

(Appreciate The B-Day gift But Truly Wish For Something Else)
『AS I said an a earlier review this is probably one of the few animes I truly
disliked. I got this on my b-day and I appreciate my friend for getting me a gift but when I saw what it was I knew I had to put it somewhere I couldn't see it. My friends after a few days decided they wanted to see some of the show so I brought it out and played the set if I disliked it with just the two dvds I bought earlier I truly despised it now. The main reason is during the show there is a relationship between brother and sister that borders on incest while I never bothered to check the rest of the series out to see if they did anything more on that just seeing that little piece of it was enough to exchange this set for something else. The voice actors aren't bad or anything but it's just again I felt that there was way to much fan-service and near hentai scenes that I was wondering if this wasn't an anime porno series. The fight scenes are pretty good I give you that but I will tell viewers if you are looking for anything else in a anime series check out something else.』

(Tenjho Tenge)
『This is a great Animated, Box set. This is not for the young but older kids 13 and up will love it. Great fighting action and plot. Very pleased to add this to my collection.』

(Rebuttal re the 1 star reviews)
『There is a bit of anger among viewers regarding the utter failure of TT to have a satifying ending. Or ANY ending. I was there, I was in the same boat, right at the most climactic moment...nothing. Wtf!1

Geneon has since gone out of business; unless the lic goes to another co, thats it. Solution ? MANGA! Want to find out the end ? TT is really involved and continues! (not a del rey review, no comment on the sanitized vers.).

The anime is one of my faves still. Animation is crisp and with great colour, want a female voice to sound half-way normal ? TT. Deep involved story thats part Mystic, part Feudal Japan yet part now Japan ? TT.

TT is not perfect, the fan service is minimal imo, but after the first ep. I didnt really notice it; it can get a bit long in some spots and the "flashbacks" may cause some lack of focus, but over all the story and quality far out weigh and failures.

Do I wish TT had actually had a conclusion ? YES!. Do I think the manga had issues ? yes.

Do I regret finding TT ? NO.

(Looking for a mindblowing philosophy? Forget it, it is all about style!)
『Have you ever read Oh! Great mangas? They all possess a very unique air about them and you cannot describe it as 'fighting', or 'fanservice', or 'comedy', or 'school life' or label it with any other genre. It is all about it but from the stylish, sexual point point of view (no hentai though!).
Personaly, I prefer plot-tight, questioning anime which leaves your head full of thoughts. But once in a while anyone wants to see something juicy, eye-catching, impossible-to-turn-away because its so damn good looking. Tenjho Tenge is 100% from this league. It has so much blood-girls-boys-fights-fists to be almost overwhelming and unbearble, but it never crosses the final line and gets back to its gag-comedy side to settle things down for a bit.
And in the same time I cannot say it has no plot. Yes, it is close to its basics but here it is: there are groups of high schoolers who fight each other at Todo Academy's grounds which has been entirely dedicated to martial arts for more than 100 years. Familiar? But among all fight-them-all series I do not recall one where:
- so complicated characters relationships including love dreadful triangles, quadros, etc. exist;
- characters almost never cry, scream or crawl with pittiful faces (lets forget a girl with a broken heart, ok?);
- characters never say 20-minutes monologues with pathetic voices but fight, unrealisticly tough, but with clear reasoning, clear at least to themselves;
- even flashbacks about past (which are actually one of the two main storylines in the series) are so full of action and passion that to me the characters from 2 years back became more dear than the newly came cast.
And all of these is packed in such a wonderful character design, such juicy girls and macho boys than this modest hetero girl honestly felt bisexual influence from the visuals :-P
And by the end of the day, recalling the entire series I can tell that it had more emotional and mindful impact on me with all those really-hard-trying people than many so called clever shows whose heroes are boring scums.』

(A great show from start to finish...)
『That demands more! I know that there will be more anime coming out next year in Japan, but sadly; it'll be a direct to video release. In regards to that...

Good: The violence will be closer to the Manga it was based on.

Bad: The show won't last as long as the tv show did with maybe only six episodes top!

But never mind my whining about the "third season" and I write about the package you should be buying right now instead of reading this. Simply put:

It has DTS! Audio! The sounds of flying lead is quite immersive and plays up every speaker in the room, of which you'd hear more often near the beginning rather then the quieter last episodes. The foul mouthed Rebby really fills the room with her nasty lips every time she decides to speak too. The overall animation dropped a bit unfortunately too, but when the bullets fly. It's all in the game!

If you bought -and loved!- the first season, this is a given in purchase to complete the in-complete story of 'Black Lagoon'.』

(Pretty Good)
『I think this serie deserve less than 5 stars, but 4 is too little. It combines good action, good develop of characters, good animation, interesting stories and mature content. Not appropiate for children, but u are an adult and you are looking for good anime you can try this one.』

(Love it Awesome!!)
『Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage

I was fortunate enough to have watched the first one and loved the series. This second one is right up there with the first one. About the 4th episode the action really kicks in and off you go. Bullets, murder mayhem etc. The first few episodes were a little sick for me. (Hansel&Greta eps). But after that it was great. I am hoping for more. It comes in a metal DVD container. Just the cover is worth it.』

(Mature and mature)
『One of the more striking elements of this series, beyond the constant f-bombs and gushing blood, is the mature way the writing treats the characters and the audience. Now some anime can be mind numbing and others can be so deep as to be opaque, but Black Lagoon sets a balance, especially because it's character driven.

Sure, there's "why are we here" discussions, but it's more like the character asking "why am I here specifically". There's a difference. In the last plot arch of the second season Rock comes to some very profound realizations about himself in somewhat extreme circumstances. It's an interesting twist since Rock is supposed to represent an "everyman" in an environment that most of us probably couldn't survive in... but that almost exists in some parts of the world. Also in this story Rock and Revy get to delve deeper into their own relationship, although it's mostly co-dependent co-denial. For her part Revy considers herself "already dead" but she's not past the point of caring about what Rock wants or needs and putting herself in situations that are against her "principles" to support him. The writers never give away the advantage of making their relationship as complex as they want to.

Another refreshing element is simply the story structure. Four or five episode plot archs that are largely self contained. There are a few references to earlier plots and maybe a few flashbacks but most all of the story is fully within the arch. I wish more series, even live action types, worked that way. No instant resolution but no meandering road going nowhere.』

(Black Lagoon Season 2)
『Compared to the first season of black lagoon, the second barrage rocked. It continued the action from the first season and kicked it up a notch.
The second barrage is a lot darker than the first one with some scenes giving me the chills. The the first arc includes these twins from transyvania and personalities really creeped me out.
OVerall I liked the second barrage and my favorite part of this season was the character development of Rock. Outwardly Rock doesn't change much but the second barrage opens his eyes to the kind of life he stepped in to when he joined the black lagoon company. So this season includes sort of a life change for Rock. I encourage everyone who watched the first season and liked it to watch this one. It is worth it to have seen the first season before watching this season so you know what is going on.』

『A recent string of murders is the talk of the town. Not that murder is anything unusual, but the twin killers are targeting Hotel Moscow! The delicate balance of power held by the mafia leaders crumbles as the sickening slaughter escalates into a full-blown war of attrition. No quarter is given and none asked for as Balalaika and her soldiers are forced to recall a time when their deadliest enemies were children.

    (love it!)
『I loved it. I am the President of the Greenville Society for Japanese Animation and Culture, and we are currently watching this one. It is action packed and full of drama. The animation is top notch and the character designs are charming. The story line is full of ups and downs. And for once, I agree with the choice of American voice actors, they fit their roles perfectly.』

(Difficult to remember title, easy to remember story.)
『First of all, let me say that no aspect of this series is outstanding. Rather than being brilliant at one thing, it's more of a good all-round series. It's a solid series; one that fans of war stories set in the ancient past will get into from the get-go. And, despite the main character having his own harem, it's safe to say the series can be enjoyed even by those who dislike harem series.

The story starts with a man getting found injured in the forest near a small farming village. He has a mask, no memories and doesn't have a clue who he is or what he was doing in the forest. He quickly becomes friends with Eluluu, the young healer who found him, and her little sister, Aruruu. He gets given the name Hakuro by the village chief - the name of Eluluu and Aruruu's father.

At first all is well but the situation quickly turns ugly. Hakuro has to come up with a tactic to save the villagers from being eaten alive by the angry 'God' of the forest. He does so, and earns the respect of the entire village. Then the local feudal lord pays a visit to the town in order to collect taxes. One of the guards kills the village chief, resulting in Hakuro being named chief, and he helps the angered villagers lead a rebellion against the feudal lord. Hakuro kills him, which leads to the Emperor getting involved in an attempt to avenge his brother.

From there, the series takes a path fans of the Suikoden video game series will be familiar with: armies fight, new, super strong allies join and, bit by bit, Hakuro's army grows in power. Soon a mere rebellion transforms into a war between nations, with war after war following Hakuro as he rises to power, as if caused by him. As he continues to become more powerful, staining his hands with more and more blood, the questions of who he is and if what he's doing is right become increasingly troubling.

Where the story falls short, after an involving opening and enjoyable middle, is the ending. Prior to the last section of the story, it had been fast-paced bows and arrows warfare. Aside from a few winged magic users, there'd been nothing to suggest the ending would be quite so ridiculous. All of a sudden robots come into the picture, with one nation destroying all others with these machines, and Hakuro's true identity is revealed during the mecha action. In an attempt not to spoil the story, I'll just say that Gods, evolution, space stations, hi-tech science labs, blob monsters, reincarnation, a Godzilla style final battle and all of the usual anime ending stuff you can think of comes into play. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, actually... It's best just to say it ends in a horrible manner and leave it at that. It's a shame because if the series had ended like it started, without all of the seemingly random rubbish, it could've been a top anime.

The ending aside, my other story issue lies with the battle tactics. Hakuro's tactics usually come down to him telling people to go left or right and him letting his elite soldiers slaughter the enemy soldiers. With the main character playing the role of tactician and the story being about him quickly rising to power, I expected in-depth, jaw dropping battle strategies. Maybe I was expecting too much? I don't know, but it's fair to say the battles could've been more complex.

While on the subject of battles, if you've played any of the Dynasty Warrior games you'll have a good idea how the combat goes in Utaware. The generals are all powerful, killing the grunts with one blow, and the proper, more intense combat involves one on one battles between opposing generals. But the combat isn't very exciting, with some animation recycling occurring and the important fights just simply failing to get my blood pumping. It's a shame because some dodgy, out of place CG aside, Utaware is lovely to look at. The art is appealing, the colours vibrant and, as far as I'm aware, the backgrounds were all drawn by hand, giving them extra charm.

To end my story comments on a positive note, I'll end by saying that, if nothing else, the Utaware story is an entertaining one to sit through. The story is always on the move, with there rarely being episodes not focused on the on-going struggles of Hakuro, and it flows excellently from episode to episode. Another story positive is lack of perverted content. I may be little off when I say this but I think the game the anime was based on was an erotic one, involving Hakuro picking one of the female characters to be his girl. While there are elements of this in the plot, in the anime it comes across more like a straight-forward romance that develops in a logical way as the series progresses. The only scene that comes close to crossing the line is one where Karula - a warrior with a HUGE sword and big boobs - offers herself to Hakuro in exchange for his help and almost gets accepted. Overall, the series was highly enjoyable and surprisingly tasteful.

In terms of the huge cast of characters, Utaware is a little hit and miss. The cast are more likeable than well developed. The main cast members all stand-out, with most of their names and personalities sticking in my mind straight away, but not many get fleshed out. You learn their quirks and that's it for the most part. Hakuro gets the most time, as you'd expect with him being the main character, but you never see a lot of his past, and what's shown isn't very clear. Eluluu, the female lead, is cute and likeable enough and her interaction with Hakuro and her little sister, Aruruu, adds depth to her character but she very rarely came across like a real person. Aside from those two, only Oboro and Karula get decent development. Oboro fights whilst constantly worrying about his blind and bedridden little sister (some early episodes focus on this subplot) and Karula has her own little story relating to her past. In short, the cast have a lot of likability but fairly limited development, with a lot of the blame for this laying with the series length.

As for the music, Utaware has a solid soundtrack. There are some memorable tracks and lots of fitting music that, while unlikely to be listened to outside of the anime, improves the viewing experience. The opening and ending themes are very good, the opening in particular sticking in my mind.

All in all, Utaware surpassed my expectations but still ended up disappointing me because of how it ended. Until the final volume I was prepared to score it in the 9-10/10 tier, but it'll have to make do with a solid 8/10 instead. I respect the series for not being perverted despite it being based on an erotic game and having a large cast of attractive females. At worst, you could say it panders to the moe market a little, but there's nothing included that made me think the series was aimed more at perverts than people looking for a good story. I recommend anyone looking for some primitive, bows and arrows war look the series up.

    Rating: 8/10

    -----------

There's one last, non-vital thing I'd like to touch upon: the DVD extras.

Included on the Utaware DVDs is a four part omake series. These short episodes focus on light-hearted fun - very different from the usually serious main story, and I rated the omake series 9/10; one point higher than the main series. Why the rating, you ask? Because the omakes are hilarious. I'm not the sort of guy who roles around laughing, but even I laughed during the third episode when, after Oboro had broke her doll, Touka went insane, beating the crap out of Oboro and making some of the most weird and amusing screams I've ever heard. I loved how Hakuro left the room after seeing Touka's bloody hand and crazy expression, leaving Oboro to his fate (once again!).

Do yourself a favour and watch the Utaware extras. You won't regret it.』

    (A Pleasure for all...)
『This story is enthralling! The characters grow and relationships blossom, pulling in viewers who love stories about believable characters(the writers make the character's quite lovable!).
It is easy to see how this story could have formed from a game, with the main character's having to survive one assault after another; the plot never stops moving. When the tale starts to swing too violent or to sappy for too long, it starts to move back the other way. So in spots that get too predictably sappy; then you know the plot's about to twist.
A viewer can enjoy this continual struggle for survival while watching the army battles and the personal duals! The story stays true to war and some of your favorite characters die, but the action rarely stops to even grieve.
But the story goes way beyond a simple battle with it's surprisingly beautiful and rich depth contained in the main characters. If you like action, or soft touching drama, this anime is it! Oh, and it's got fox tails, feathered wings and such are here too...』

    (Great Anime)
『This is a great anime and a must have. If your into great story lines and some comedy this is the perfect anime. It is one you can watch over and over.』

(An Incredible Series That Well Have You Cheering For The Characters From Start To Finish)
『This series turned out to be another great find and for any anime fan of fantasy or action this series well be a great collection set for your library. The story focuses on a mysterious man wearing a partial mask who's found by the granddaughter of the village healer with no memory of who he is the healer give him the name of Hakuoro, Hakuoro is quickly befriended by the villagers, the healer's granddaughter Eluluu and after gaining her trust Eluluu's younger sister Aruruu. Than he finds out that the villagers are being basically bullied by the local lord and his son and after one of the lords soldiers mistakenly kills the healer who's both well loved and respected by the villagers helps lead them to an uprising against the lord, and later the emperor himself since the lord was the younger brother of the emperor and the emperor wanted revenge against the villagers for rising against him. Thus we come to the main story plot of the series Hakuoro becomes the new leader of the country after the emperor is killed and with help of his entourage of friends and loyal allies tries to bring stability and harmony to the new country of Tuskuru(Named an reverence to the village healer). The series has a wide cast of characters throughout the series you'll grow greatly fond of and cheer for with their victories, and sadly there are scenes that will cause you to shed a few tears as some characters you grow fond of are killed as well as a few other touching scenes. The series will also have some humor in it so it won't be all dramatic but it is bloody so I'd advise people who have young kids to be cautious, that's not to say they can't watch it but if you feel that the scenes are to blood for your kids than just fast forward over them. Also they have some light adult scenes not any nudity or hentai scenes but more of attempted seductions and flirtations between some of the characters. The video is wide-screen sharp and clear as always with these recent anime series and the voice cast for the English and Japanese actors was incredible they played their roles right on the money. Sadly if your a fan who likes the extras like commentaries and the such you won't get that with this box set it only has the standard textless intro/ending songs and some trailers that's it. That all said if you like the series Inuyasha, Basilisk, or just like action this incredible series awaits you....』
『Everything about him is shrouded in mystery. The mask he can’t remove. The past he can’t unravel. And the very survival of the people who have chosen him as their leader. But what Hakuoro does know is this: He was gravely injured and left for dead in a forest. A kind, young girl named Eluluu found him and nursed him back to health. And he was welcomed into a barren land where strange creatures roam, an angry god seeks vengeance, an oppressive government slaughters the innocent, and a bloody war looms on the horizon. Will the masked hero liberate the people who saved him? Can he unlock the memories that elude him? Or will he remain a stranger even to himself? The answers are right before you (or are they?).

    (Couldn't stop watching.)
『This is some of the best anime, and Sci-Fi in general, that I've had the pleasure of watching. The story and characters are very engrossing, and it gave me chills like only a few of the best Sci-Fi movies and books were able to do. If you like science fiction but haven't found any interest in anime, please check this out, it will change your mind! The animation is wonderful, and the futuristic cyberpunk setting is believable and unique. The dubbing is excellent, and I enjoyed watching it in English.』

    (Counter to the Amazon.com review)
『If you're the kind of person that needs a story to tell literal, straight-forward journey from A to B, (like the person who wrote the Amazon.com review) then this isn't for you. But if you appreciate abstract ideas and subjective story-lines open for interpretation, especially thought-provoking stories that pose existential questions, then you'll appreciate Ergo Proxy.

According to Amazon's reviewer, "Ergo Proxy will appeal to viewers who favor violent action over coherent storytelling and credible characters." I don't recall a terrible amount of violent action. The series is arguably slow, actually. Whoever wrote the amazon.com review missed the point, many times over. The 3 episodes that the Amazon.com review sited as "pointless fantasies" are actually the battles with different proxies in their respective cities: beating the game show was defeating a proxy, discerning fantasy from reality in "Ophelia" was defeating a proxy, etc.

As far as copying from Evagelion, I see no similarities. And the only thing that can be accused of copying from Ghost in The Shell is the robots becoming self-aware due to the Cogito Virus. But that idea is in no way original to Ghost in the Shell. How many sci-fi stories deal with the idea of robots becoming self-aware? Besides, "Cogito" is part of the Latin phrase "Cogito ergo sum" or "I think, therefore I am." I think, think, that Descartes was an antecedent to Ghost in the shell, but don't quote me.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and some people enjoy the literal, while others appreciate the subjective. And that's fine, of course; this series isn't going to please everyone. But the points made against Ergo Proxy in the Amazon.com review are unfair and incorrect.

By the way, the art is rather nice, too. Cyberpunktastic.』

    (title)
『I was introduced to this series by a friend and I absolutely love it. It really makes you think. It's not just the same thing every episode.』

(Fills your hunger, but still leaves you having room for more.)
『Ergo Proxy is a sophistocated anime. Not one that is full of action or that has a clear story. You really have to think about the characters, their relationships, and the world they live in when you watch this movie. Ergo Proxy reminded me a lot of "Speedgrapher"(another amazing adult Anime). It's about a high society that falls at the hands of the same person that helped nurtured it. When the curtain falls your left questioning about what is the key factor to life. Just like in Speedgrapher the key was living by your own destiny, and not riding on the rails that had been laid out before you.

Ergo Proxy tells the tale of one man who tries to find himself, a girl who thinks she knows herself but doesn't, and highly positive character that motivates them all. The combination of personalities is interesting. The Main character Re-L is a woman whom you could call "cold" and not be off by a single letter. Vincent the co-main character is a passive-aggressive person who bends to fit the situation(mostly he is collective and passive, but mainly because he doesn't know who he is). Pino the sub-character is the odd ball of the bunch. Both Re-L and Vincent alone are dark characters. Pino is full of light and really brings out the best in both of them because of her innocence.

All of Ergo Proxys strange characters live in post-apocalyptic world. They belong to a highly governed society that has learned to survive by living under strict societal rules. Only the highest level of society knows the truth about it, while the lower society live their lives blindly not knowing the truth. Re-L, Vincent, and Pino all journey out to find this truth. The trek that they go on exposes many lies for them, and opens their eyes to a world that they never thought was possible. There are plenty of plot twist, and mind bogglers in this anime, but you have to put the story together yourself. The anime doesn't just fall into place. Each episode reveals clues and hints. Once you get towards the last disk you start to put things together.

Ergo Proxy is a great anime to watch, I recommend it if your into "thinker" sort of animes. I only give this anime 4 stars because I thought it should have been longer so we could see the characters develop more. 2 episode I felt could have been done better as they were not necessary at all. I thought the story was unique, but sometimes overly confusing. There were many times when I didn't know what was going on, untill I pieced the episodes together. If you like Speedgrapher you will enjoy this. If you haven't seen Speedgrapher...well check that out too it's amazing.

    (Unexpected)
『I admit that when i first started to watch this show i thought it was going to be a dumb show with some kind of cheesy plot, but as i keep watching i was captivated by the way the story began to play out and even though i could predict where the story was headed most of the time it was still great to see it play out. Some of the episodes leading to the ending where a little confusing and unexpected but overall where a good part of the story where you get to see how the individual characters think and are different from each other and really brings the characters to life. Bottom line is this is a great show and i would recommended to any one who likes anime.』
『Never before released in complete boxset form!

The domed city of Romd is an impenetrable would-be utopia where humans and robots coexist, and everything is under complete government control, or so it appears. While working on a mysterious murder case, Re-l Mayer, a female detective from the Civilian Intelligence Office, receives a foreboding message that something is going to "awaken." That night, she's attacked by a deformed super-being...what was this unidentified monster that attacked her, and who was the figure that came in between them? As Re-l attempts to unlock this spiraling mystery, a metaphysical battle cry leads her to the unknown outside world...

Ending theme song, "Paranoid Android" performed by Radiohead』
『When it premiered in 2006, the broadcast seriesErgo Proxyattracted a lot of attention because Radiohead let the filmmakers use "Paranoid Android" as the closing theme. Tough-talking intelligence agent Re-l lives in the domed city of Romdo, a pseudo-utopia where humans and androids co-exist under an all-pervasive regime administered by her grandfather. When monsters called Proxies begin attacking people and robots ("autoreives") develop a sense of self due to the "Cogito" virus, Re-l launches her own investigatition. Along the way, she meets immigrant Vincent Law, who travels with the cognizant cyborg Pino. Violating the laws of the city, she follows Vincent and Pino outside the dome and discovers that the rulers of Romdo have lied: human colonies still exist in the scarred landscape. Re-l also learns that Proxies are god-like beings of unknown origin and enormous power, and that Vincent is the exceptionally powerful Ergo Proxy. The series borrows heavily fromAppleseed,Neon Genesis Evangelion, andGhost in the Shell: S.A.C., but the perpetually fussy Re-l lacks Major Kusanagi's fascination. The filmmakers snarl the already convoluted plot in a tangle of flashbacks and alternate visions that recall the confusing structure ofGasaraki. The narration jumps the track entirely in Episodes #14, 15, and 19, three pointless fantasies that waste time which should have been used to clarify the story.Ergo Proxywill appeal to viewers who favor violent action over coherent storytelling and credible characters. The extras include three behind-the-scenes featurettes, plus Japanese trailers and commercials. (Rated 16 and older: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, profanity)--Charles Solomon

    (Exceptional anime.)
『Ok, first of all, to discount this product simply b/c of it's lack of a English dub is absolutely ludicrous.

If you purchased this thinking it would be dubbed, then yea, I can see how that would suck, however, this was never advertised as such here on amazon, nor was it promoted as such in the months leading to it's release. When you consider this project was nearly axed and delayed once already, I'm glad to finally have this in my hands.

The state of anime is pretty dire right now. Companies that have been around for decades now have either consolidated, or completely vanished :(ADV, Geneon, etc.) Part of the reason is the down economic situation in the world, but it's also my belief that the anime market is suffering due to a lack of quality anime. There haven't been any breakout hits in the last several years, at least since 2007, IMO.

Sola is one of those rare exceptions. Would I have prefered a dub, sure. I watched this on [...] when it originally aired a few years back, but purchasing this dvd, subtitle and all, has enhanced the experience for me, not taken away from it. The likelihood of a dub being released is minimal and to pass on this series for that sole purpose is pretty close minded.

This series is a rare great that will top my personal favorites list for a very long time to come.

For more info and episodic reviews etc, I recommend these sites:
    [...]

(An excellent story worth looking into...)
『This was one of those animes I bought that I didn't have high expectations for, I was shocked. This is easily one of the most entertaining and touching anime movies I have had the privilege to watch. I won't provide a summary because you can always read it somewhere but I will say this is hands down an anime worth owning. The animation and music are all excellent and the story is very touching and leaves a good impact. The characters are all lovable and contribute to the over all greatness of this story. In short I would recommend this to anybody seeking a touching story involving romance and fantasy.』

    (a stellar anime...)
『Somebody gave a negative 1-star review here (because of dubbing, not the quality of the art) to one of the best animes you might not have heard about so I thought I would counteract the review.

This is a five-star anime, no doubt about that.

Yes there is no dubbing here, but Bandai has gotten a show that might not otherwise have made it to the US market at a great price, so lets not complain too much. You like to read don't you? Plus you get to hear the inflection of the original seiyuus (japanese voice actresses) like the original director intended.

In Japan this was voted as the best anime in 2007 which is something to think about. I think they know anime over there : )

Sola is not your typical robots-explosions-mecha-madness anime nor is it a fan-service romp. It is an exploration of metaphysical forces and the mystery of our emotions as they become embodied in supernatural beings. It is deliberately paced, so if you are in a hurry for some action, then this is not for you.

In a way it reminds me of Haibane Renmei, which is high praise indeed. It has that same type of pensive and curious take on the supernatural order of things.

    SPOILERS (MILD) AHEAD...

Plotwise, Sola is about a young artistic (photographer) boy, Yorito, who meets a girl, Matsuri, who has mysterious powers and who turns out to be the "Calamity of the Night." She is basically a being (a Yaka) who is the embodiment of human agony and pain and as such she is meant to always be alone in the universe. Yorito doesn't buy that and befriends her. The rest of the anime revolves around their relationship. It is complicated by the fact that there are forces out hunting for Matsuri.

So, this is an anime that is a little different but of extraordinary quality throughout. The pacing is excellent, the art and music are stellar and the overall show is of the highest quality. take a chance and you will be pleasantly surprised.』

(Hey Bandai would love to support your products...)
『But ever since you guys went subtitles only i stopped buying your dvd's. Sorry no dub=no sale.

A dub requires just that little extra effort and money and adds value to a product. Its not like you are selling this in japan, this is the usa where peoples main language is english.

Its like not having enough faith in your product to try and sell it to mainstream America but a small niche group of sub only people.

I would have loved a Bang zoom dub like on haruhi.

Its nice that you are putting out a product for cheap for those who don't already have the region 2 dvd's. But for those who already own the series and have watched it multiple times in raw form, will they pay for the same product twice just for a sub script?』

    (Not worth watching.)
『The action is good, the animation is good, and the story is ok.

    There are problems:
    The ending was horrible.
    The intro was horrible.
A lot of the city structure and vehicles are umbrellas or balloons.
There are some weapons that are tops like the ones being ejected from the vehicle.
There is only one concentration, which is just the monster.
There should have been a background of how the monster was even created.
Then there seemed to be more than just Zierum as the antagonist such as the government or other organizations.
Why wasn't there another way to free her brother? Seemed kind of heartless, just go for the kill, for that revenge without another solution.』

    (Completely Pointless Anime)
『This anime (if that is what they call it) is way out of the borderline of what anime really is about. First of all it is by all means a lack of plot. Well there is a plot, but it is completely pointless. What I mean is that this anime has had the most annoying characters in the ever. There so annoying that all I could do is either return this DVD or maybe - just maybe skip a couple of episodes to see if something cool might happen. But it didn`t work at all. This series was a waste of money. I only bought it because I heard it was really cool and original and so that made me want to buy it. I think I may have learned my lesson on listening to these propagandas, is that not every single word they say is true that if a series is said to be really good in characters, plots, story, etc. Because in the end you are the only critic to give your conclusions or reviews.』

(2 Season Anime. A Review From An Avid Anime Watcher.)
『I watched over 100 series of anime so this is coming from someone that watches anime rather than TV because TV just sucks nowadays. Anyhow there's two seasons to this anime. I'm just gonna go straight to analyzing it. If you wanna know what the anime is about than check out the intro on Amazon or search it on google.

There are two seasons to this anime. Season 1 is orphen and season 2 is orphen revenge. Season 1 has 24 episodes and season 2 has 23.

The first season is actually significantly better and more humorous (better quality humor) than the second. It has a better storyline and was a bit more unique and a lot more interesting. The second season, however, starts off horribly and starts picking up a few episodes later. However, the second season never reaches the same quality as the first season hence me giving this a 3 star.

To the person that gave it a 1 star, this anime in no way deserves a one star. It was pretty good, the dub was nice to watch and the characters were very funny and decently built. I only agree with the second season that it did lack what was found in the first.

First season I would give about a 3.5-4 star and the second season I would give about a 2 because it had a lot of stuff missing. Did anyone notice that they also lowered the quality to the animation as well? Check out LUCKY, the wolfen. You'll notice it there the most.

Is this anime worth watching? Yeah! It was actually entertaining compare with other animes that I've watched. Here's a quick recommendation from me if you're interested in anime!

    -NARUTO (Subtitles)
    -Code Geass (SUBtitles)
    -Death Note (SUB)
    -Get Backers (DUB)
    -Desert Punk (DUB)

These are all unrelated animes since I don't really know many animes that are similar to orphen, at least not one that I can think of that's good at the moment, especially that feels like orphen.

    EDIT
I just thought up of an anime that is somewhat similar that many people should know and it's Full Metal Alchemist (subtitle version for best experience, but their dub version isn't too shabby). Read about it, it's not exactly sorcery imo but yeah.

Want anymore recommendations? Leave a comment and hopefully I'll see it and tell ya.

    (Not what I expected)
『Orphen Season one was ok. While the animation lacked the story was alright which made it ok to watch. Orphen season two was absolutely terrible. No sort of plot was introduced until the very end of season two. Most of Orphen's Revenge was Orphen and his sidekick walking around and fighting random monsters. The animation and music for the entire series was poor and at times rather corney. I highly discourage this purchase. Orphen: Complete Collection』

(If You Like Anime With A Witty Wizard With An Attitude Here's A Great One For You)
『I had already gotten the second season of this entertaining anime and was finding it difficult to get the first season, and now I'm glad that ADV has finally released this series together for a very good price. Some fans have complained that the second season was to light and not as serious as the first and while that's a little true both seasons are still entertaining either way so you'll get enjoyment from both seasons. The first season deals with the main character Oprhen and his recent his agreement to have an apprentice by the name of Majic who's the innkeepers son, but he has his own hidden agenda as well for being in this village that no one knows about. AS he trains Majic in the ways of spells we later find out of his own estrangement from the wizard council also known as the Tower Of Fang which all powerful wizards belong to and which Orphen himself is especially known for because of his own great power, along the way he meets another would be student by the name of Cleao a young upper class women who saw Orphen during her travels while abroad and was instantly smitten with him. The second season is as many fans have said mostly light-hearted for half the season but it does become more dramatic during the other half and we will see recurring characters you may have seen from the first season most notably Dortin and Volkan the brothers who are basically the comedic duo for both the first and second season. You'll definitely like Orphen's somewhat laid back an smarmy attitude he gives out sometimes which he does to basically hide his own caring and kind heart that he allows only a select few to see, the Japanese voice cast were of course excellent and the English cast were just as good especially the voice of Orphen as the lines they give him for the dubbed make Orphen an even more endearing and smart mouth wizard character than they do with the subbed version. The video for the first season is decent but you will see some lines from time to time, but the second season video is more cleared up so all in all no complaints really on that part. The audio for both seasons is very good and the music soundtrack they have fit with the series greatly so if you're a fan of series like Scrapped Princess, Rune Soldier, or Full Metal Alchemist here's another great box set for your anime library.....』
