customer 's reviewThe story of the politically incorrect life of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti), who meets the love of his life at his wedding - and she is not the bride. A candid confessional, told from Barney‘s point of view, the film spans three decades and two continents, taking us through the different —acts of his unusual history. There is his first wife (Rachelle Lefevre), a flagrantly unfaithful free spirit; His second wife (Minnie Driver), a wealthy Jewish Princess; His third wife, Miriam (Rosamund Pike), the mother of his two children, and his true love. With his father, Izzy (Dustin Hoffman) as his sidekick, Barney takes us through his long and gloriously full life, played out on a grand scale.
The publication of a book accusing him of murder leads schlock television producer Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) to reflect on his tumultuous life--from his troubled first marriage to his best friend sleeping with his second wife to his one true love… and how he destroyed the happiest time in his life. By turns comic and self-lacerating, Panofsky is a richly drawn character given vivid life by Giamatti, who's built a remarkable career on prickly people (Sideways,American Splendor,John Adams). Regrettably, the women in his life aren't as fully realized, but the strong performances from the actresses playing them (Rachelle Lefevre, Minnie Driver, and Rosamund Pike) do a lot to make up for the thinness of how they're written. Rounding out the cast is Dustin Hoffman as Panofsky's father, a crude but vigorous ex-cop who loves his son unreservedly. Adapted from an award-winning Canadian book,Barney's Versionfeels, in the best sense, like a novel; small details and incidents build up to the picture of a man's life. The movie depicts that life without judgment, never manipulating the audience for cheap laughs or sentiment--and yet it is by turns wildly funny and achingly sad, largely due to Giamatti. He holds the viewer's attention effortlessly, quietly, never showboating his emotions or flaunting his intelligence. He's simply a superb actor, and this is a superb performance.--Bret Fetzer

customer 's reviewThe world is talking about Formula One™ again, and here is your chance to see why. 2002 was marked by one team’s dominance, but 2003 was anybody’s game. Drastically improved displays from McLaren, Williams and Renault made life extremely tough for Ferrari and Michael Schumacher. New regulations, and a shift in the balance of power in the tire war, ensured that predicting the winner of each race was never easy, and as for the Championship…Eight different drivers stood on the top step of the podium. Three of them secured their maiden victories in FORMULA ONE! Kimi Räikkönen calmly took the title right down to the wire inonly his second season with a top team! Juan Pablo Montoya upped his game and came so close. Nothing could faze Fernando Alonso. He became the youngest F1™ race winner in history! Go on board with him as he laps Michael Schumacher! Experience the fastest race in F1 history. Get to the heartof this roller coaster of a season and follow Michael’s struggle to win an unprecedented sixth world title.Color, 120 min.
Michael Schumacher's historic sixth World Championship is just one of many memorable highlights in theOfficial Reviewof F1's eventful 2003 season. Compiled from official broadcast coverage including excerpts from post-race interviews and qualifying pole-winners, this annual survey offers concise summaries of all 16 races from Australia (where Finland's Kimi Räikkönen scored a pivotal victory for McLaren) to Japan, where Rubens Barrichello secured a win for himself, the constructor's championship for Ferrari, and all-time greatest honors for his teammate, the über-German Schumacher. Brazil was crazy all around, with sporadic rain, frequent tire changes, a spectacular wipeout by Renault's Fernando Alonso (who still earned a third-place finish), and a judgment-decided victory for Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella. (Better use of graphics and narration would clarify race-to-race transitions, but knowledgeable F1 fans probably won't notice this forgivable flaw.)

"Schumi" scored an emotional victory at San Marino just hours after his mother's death, and won again in Italy (including his fastest-ever lap), Austria, Canada, and the rainy-day U.S. GP (while brother Ralf won the European and French GPs). Ferrari's new "shark-vented" F2003GA debuted at Imola; Juan Pablo Montoya challenged the championship with a win at Monaco (where 2002-to-2003 track changes are shown in split-screen from the cockpit of JPM's Williams); and Alonso's first-place finish at Hungary made him the youngest-ever GP winner. Despite numerous revisions in regulations and Ferrari's mid-season protest over apparent Michelin tire-width violations (judges dismissed the claim while Michelin corrected its tire size), the 2003 F1 season achieved its commercial goal with huge crowds, wacky highlights (remember that kilted loony on the track at Silverstone?), celebrity appearances, climactic races, intense competition from Williams, McLaren, and Renault (to contrast Ferrari's dominance in 2002), and the amazing achievement of Schumacher, now indisputably the greatest driver (statistically speaking) in the history of Formula One.--Jeff Shannon

customer 's reviewThe story of a Malamute pup, Nikki and an orphaned bear cub, Neewa."
This story, based on the novelNomads of the Northby James Oliver Curwood, is about the adventures of a malamute dog named Nikki. Nikki and his kind master, Andre Dupas, are traveling via canoe through the Canadian Rockies. When Nikki encounters Neewa, a bear cub that's lost its mother, Andre ties the two animals together, plops them in the canoe, and heads for the rapids. When the two animals become separated from Andre, the unlikely pair must learn to survive in the wilderness. What is initially a relationship of hate and incompatibility transforms into one of compromise and friendship between species. Encounters with timber wolves, lynx, wolverines, and many other wild animals are vividly photographed and give viewers a real sense of life in the wild . When Neewa begins his long winter hibernation, Nikki sets off alone on a desperate hunt for food. Man's scent leads him not to the friendly Andre Dupas, but to an angry trader who attempts to trap and poison him, eventually capturing him and training him as a fighting dog. This 73-minute feature has absolutely breathtaking animal and nature photography and the action is plentiful and absorbing. Especially forward-thinking for its time (1961) are its declaration that Indians don't deserve to be treated as slaves, but as equals in the quest to trap animals, and its assertion that dog fights are "cruel, savage, not human, and bloodthirsty." Nonetheless, animal-rights activists and sensitive children alike will find disturbing the shots of steel traps in use, the incident in which Neewa and Nikki almost choke one another with the line that joins them, and the gruesome dog fight scene. customer 's reviewNine races. One champion. James Garner, Yves Montand, Brian Bedford and Antonio Sabato portray Formula I drivers competing to be the best in this slam-you-into-the-driver's seat tale of speed, spectacle and intertwined personal lives. Eva Marie Saint and Toshiro Mifune also star. John Frankenheimer (Ronin) directs this winner of 3 Academy Awards, crafting split-screen images to capture the overlapping drama and orchestrating you-are-there POV camerawork to intensify the hard-driving thrills. Nearly 30 top drivers take part in the excitement, so buckle up, movie fans. Race with the best to the head of the pack.
Light on story, this 1966 spectacle directed by John Frankenheimer was shot in 70 millimeter, with a cinematically enthralling emphasis on unique, visceral new ways of capturing the sensations of a car race. James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand, and Toshiro Mifune are part of the stellar, international cast whose characters plod through assorted relationship and business conflicts. But the film's real hook is the thrilling and inventive means by which Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate) brings an urgency to the drama happening on the racetrack. A true master of the plastic techniques of obtaining and cutting kinetic footage, Frankenheimer offers more than a joyride to viewers: he makes action part of the compelling language of stories. Cameras are strapped to vehicles as they round the track, shots are taken from a helicopter, the screen is split between angles for maximum impact--even ifGrand Prixdoesn't rank among the director's best character-driven stories, it is certainly driven on its own terms.--Tom Keogh

On the DVD
The much-anticipated release on DVD does not disappoint, with a pristine restored print and upgraded 5.1 Dolby sound. Of course, the Cinerama film can only be fully appreciated if you sitveryclose to your screen. The absence of a commentary track is forgivable, since director John Frankenheimer died in 2002. "Pushing the Limit" is your standard 30-minute retrospective with many new interviews with the stars and drivers. The universal opinion is that the film caught Formula One at the exact right time when the beauty of the sport was about to be changed in favor of safety and commercialism. There are some fascinating stories on how they were able to use real race footage so seamlessly. "Flat Out" continues the vibe of what racing was like in the '60s with more interviews from the real racers. "The Style and Sound of Speed" talks about designer Saul Bass and how he created the film's different approaches to each race and the cutting-edge use of montages and multiple screens. The vintage doc is kitschy but allows us to see the filming in action (the footage is used extensively in the new featurettes).--Doug Thomas
