In my personal opinion Twilight is prefabricated, poorly written, shallow, demographic-forcing tripe. When I was a fourteen-year-old girl I was very obsessed with the vampire anti-hero Lestat from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. And though Lestat had many relationship issues he was still a better defined and more well conceived character than that of Edward Cullen.
Edward and Bella are poorly thought out, two dimensional shells. This was a deliberate effort by the author so that every young reader could imagine themselves as the main characters but in the process she made them so superficial that the characters lacked any quality of definition. They did not feel like real people.
Not only is Twilight poorly written but it also hinders upon actual mythology. The notion of vampires glittering in the sun is laughable at best. It brings to mind the recollection of such toys as the My Little Pony dolls. The logic behind vampires sparkling in the sunlight is non-existent. A vampire burning in the sun has been a staple of Gothic fiction for many years. There are real diseases and disorders in the world that make sunlight harmful to certain individuals. Scientifically it's more plausible to be harmed by sunlight than to 'naturally' sparkle in it.
Another flaw in the mythos of Twilight is the definition of werewolf. I cannot tell you how many times I have come across Twilight fans who insist the characters who can turn into wolves are not werewolves. They say that these characters are shape-shifters. A shape shifter by traditional definition can take on multiple forms, not just one. Many Twilight fans also argue that within the mythos of the books a true werewolf only changes on the full moon and that's why Jacob and company are not actually werewolves. The parapsychology student in me winces at this. In many traditional werewolf folklore out of Germany and France there are werewolves that most certainly can change at will, are aware in their wolf form, and are not bound by the phase of the moon. The very word werewolf means man-wolf. It does not mean part man and part wolf. It comes from the notion of a man INTO a wolf. Most classic werewolf stories (before The Wolf-Man movie) had the werewolf changing from a person into an actual wolf.
The very first werewolf legend can be traced back to the Greek myth of King Lycaon. According to legend King Lycaon served human flesh at a feast for Zeus (the king of the Gods). Zeus was so offended that he punished Lycaon by turning him into a wolf. Only his eyes remained human. This myth is where the terms Lycanthrope, Lycanthropy and the more modern Lycan come from. I guess it's safe to say Stephenie Meyer does not do her research in regard to the occult before writing these stories.
Not only is Twilight poorly written and intellectually insulting to occultists (amateur and professional alike) but it also promotes very unhealthy relationships. Edward Cullen is abusive, stalkerish and obsessive. Edward has also had moments of physically harming Bella. Bella is equally so but that does not make it okay, nor does it make the relationship healthy. At one point Edward disables Bella's mode of transportation and has her kidnapped as a means to 'protect' her. If he was not a vampire this would be viewed as highly abusive of the character. There is a fine line between being chivalrous and sexist. Edward Cullen crossed that line miles ago. This sets a very unhealthy ideal of what defines romantic relationship for the young readers of Twilight. I am not saying not to read Twilight nor am I saying to burn the books. I am simply saying that it needs to be looked at in context for what it truly is and that there are far higher quality reads out there. If you want a chivalrous character who is NOT sexist, seek The Dresden Files novels by Jim Butcher. The hero, a wizard named Harry Dresden, is very chivalrous without being sexist.
Bella is what modern writers call A Mary Sue. In fiction writing and role playing games Mary Sue characters are strongly frowned upon. A Mary Sue is a character of shallow quality who is nearly flawless. The character is so perfect that even her so-called flaws are endearing.
I have run online text based role playing games since 1999 and I can tell you there are plot points in Twilight I would not have allowed in my game. A major one would be when Bella and Edward finally had their daughter toward the end of the book series the child aged extremely fast and by age seven or so she was involved with her mother's werewolf ex-boyfriend. To me this is disgusting. I would never have allowed this in my online role playing game. She might have developed with supernatural speed but she still has only had only seven-years-life experience and I feel that is certainly not enough time to be in a romantic relationship with a grown man. That was disturbing to me. Supernatural speed aging does not give her enough life experience for that sort of relationship. That was simply not right.
In short Twilight is not what I would consider a good read even for those who truly love supernatural romances. See out the likes of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Twilight is not worth the time. There are higher quality works of fiction out there.』
(Eclipse ( The Twilight Saga)) 『I haven't read it yet, but am really looking forward to it. I have been on vacation but I have been thinking about this book for days. I know it is a good bood and I can't wait to read it.』
(Really Good.) 『I have to say I didn't want to put any of the 1st three books down. They are all good so far. I plan on reading "Breaking Dawn". My only wish is that there were geared more towards adults rather than teens. So far so good.. They are really easy reads. In this third book she is realizing that she has serious feelings for Jacob and I don't much like that. But competition is always good. I just hope that she ends up with Edward..We will see.』
(GReat) 『If you love books that you can't put down. A series that you're dying to pre-order. This is the series for you. The vampires are just a bonus.』
(Can't put these books down!) 『Caution! You will get Nothing done if you pick up this book. I don't dare bring any of the Twilight books to work because I will never come back from lunch!』 『Readers captivated byTwilightandNew Moonwill eagerly devour the paperback editionEclipse, the third book in Stephenie Meyer's riveting vampire love saga. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob --- knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (the title says it all) 『The Beautiful and Damned is Fitzgerald's second novel and the title says it all.Anthony Patch and Gloria Gilbert are two self asorbed people who desire romantic love and they fall in love with each other. They have no desire for productive work and they desire lives of luxury. They receive allowances from their parents and Anthonys grandfather gives a little as well but Anthony has no desire to wotk and Gloria is obsessed with being an actress which irritates Anthony. Both are alcoholics which adds fuel to their self destructive situation. In the end ,Anthony becomes wealthy winning 30 million dollars by challenging hsi grandfathers will he is stricken from it despite being the only direct descendant but the money makes neither he or his wife happy. Their narcissism combines to damn them to misery despite their exterior beauty of which their wealth is a large part of.At times the book rambles into clever phrases that have no point and it is too loose at times but it is still a book worth reading though not quite as good as This Side of Paradise』
(My favorite of his novels.) 『Some readers discover Fitzgerald by accident, by reputation or, perhaps in school. My exposure came via the first possibility through a worn paperback copy of 'The Crack Up' soon afterward I read a paperback semi-bio called 'Crazy Sundays, F Scott Fitzgerald in Hollywood'. This was in the early Seventies and at that time I couldn't find anything in print and only found his books at yard sales and used book stores. I read Gatsby, Tender is the Night and even a collection of short stories reprinted from Fitzgerald's magazine writing. Now, over thirty years later I have re-read many of those books and I find his short stories mildly enjoyable and his novels, flowery and antique. Sure, you might say, they are old books however, I re-read my other favorites from my Seventies bookshelf: Sinclair Lewis and Mark Twain and find that their styles have aged very well by comparison (and of the two, only Lewis can be considered a contemporary, Twain is even older). What does this have to do this novel? It holds-up the best in the ways that his work generally has not held-up. Perhaps it's the themes or the biographical elements but either way, this book deserves a look if you have already read his other novels and are giving up on him!』
(read it only on a rainy day and if there's nothing else) 『the great gatsby is a better novel. fitzgerald's writing is elegant, but manages to be accessible, but i just couldn't get into the characters. there was nothing about them that made me want to keep reading. i am way more patience with books than most, some people read a paragraph or chapter before deciding if they want to stick with a story...i gave this 200 pages before i put it down...life is too short to read books that are boring....』
(Hard read) 『Store line is good but F. Scott is hard to read due to his run on sentences.』
(Outstanding) 『Semi-autobiographical story that captures the essence of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and flamboyance. The characters care most about having a good time, no expense spared, even when it means living seriously above their means. The real story of Scott and Zelda, especially during their early marriage, is eerily similar in some ways, with Scott eventually dying of alocholism and Zelda ending up in an asylum. The novel is truly captivating, especially if you want to know more about the glitter of New York City in the 1920's (the "CITY") and America life during that period in general.』 『Young, beautiful and wealthy, Gloria and Anthony want their marriage to be "a live, glamorous performance". Seemingly perfectly matched, their love begins to deteriorate as each discovers imperfections in the other. In a desperate search for happiness they live riotously - until the final crack-up.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!) 『My 21 month old son has me read this book to him EVERY night. He loves it! He points out the clock, the light, the balloon, the moon, and the rabbit who is going to sleep. His favorite page is the last page when the room is dark and the little old lady has gone. I just can't say enough good things about this book.』
(wonderful book, arrived in fair condition) 『Goodnight Moon is a classic for children. The story is simple and the illustrations are beautiful, taking you and your child into a world of pure fantasy. I am only disappointed that the book (purchased NEW) arrived with "scuff" marks. It came in a package with 2 other books and they were fine.』
(Great Baby Gift) 『Sent this book as a baby gift. Everyone knows how amazing Goodnight Moon is (super amazing!). No problems with the seller.』
(Not sure what the appeal is with this book) 『My son doesn't like this book and he usually loves books, I tried reading it to him at around 1 year and waited a few months before introducing it to him again. He doesn't seem to care for the illustrations or story line and I have to admit it's rather boring....』
(My son doesn't like it) 『My son LOVES books but has no interest in this book - NONE. I probably read 30+ books a day to him. At 12 months he can sit through average length books (e.g. Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?) and some longer length books (e.g. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - his favorite). He won't even sit through the first half of this book and it's relatively short. I don't understand what people see in this book. The black&white pages are very dull and the objects that are mentioned in the book are so small I have to look for them. Neither the illustrations nor the wording hold a young child's attention. There are so many other nighttime books that are more appealing to young children. Save your money and space on your bookshelf.』 『
In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room--to the picture of the three little bears sitting in chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one--he says goodnight.
In this classic of modern children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.
』 『Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book,Goodnight Moonis a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.
Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two. (Picture book)』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (ATTENTION ALL HALFWITS AND IMBECILES !) 『I see there are about 20 to 30 negative, one-star reviews about this woman's books - most of these are written by halfwits and run-of-the-mill imbeciles who know absolutely NOTHING about the concepts these books contain. These halfwits and imbeciles are what make the trillion-dollar per year, "disease for dollars" / "profit from misery" medical/pharmaceutical edifice run happily along. They're also responsible for the vet business of "medicating" animals to mimmick their masters going profitably along as well. SO PAY ATTENTION ALL YOU CRETINS! Go pick up the DVD presentation of "The Biology of Belief" by Dr. Bruce Lipton PhD. WATCH IT. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO IT - ALL OF IT!!!! And you'll soon see that Ms. Hay was way ahead of her time with these books of her's. Lipton is a CELLULAR BIOLOGIST who taught at two universities and who has had papers published in the most important medical and science magazines in the world AND HIS WORK AND CONCLUSIONS ABSOLUTELY BACK UP WHAT HAY SAYS ! Furthermore, you idiots should also read the SETH books - ALL OF THEM - and you'll see that Jane Roberts and her "entity" SETH were dead on with their information BACK IN THE LATE 1960's - as it is now being confirmed by people like Bruce Lipton and many others. So, wake up and get out of your stone age thinking patterns. You'll learn a lot and your life will change for the better.....idiots!』
(Awesome Book) 『I consult this book for everything. The information and reasoning for illness is so accurate. Great tool for life! :)』
(I received what I wanted on time!) 『 I am totally pleased with my purchase. It was here in a few days. The condition of my book was excellent, like new. I have no complaints. I'm happy!
Thanks!』
(A wonderfully wise and truly health centered book!) 『Louise L. Hay is the walking evidence of her teachings; she has healed her own life; being a victim of rape at the age of five, surviving a loveless childhood, brutal men and abusive relationships, a divorce and a cancer verdict; she healed her own life and soul and shares her wisom in this wonderfully wise and deeply compassionate book.
Dangerous thought patterns create poisonous and poisoned bodies and dis-eases, just as if we eat poisonous food our bodies will suffer, but we can change the destructive thought patterns and create healthy bodies. It is a matter of will power and self-love; knowledge and self-knowledge.
What we believe is what we get, thoughts attract similar thoughts. Her truth is, of course both very simple and the opposite of simple. Change is never easy even if it is necessary But as I said initially; Louise L. Hay is a walking eighty something example of the truth of her own teachings.
I strongly recommend this book!

(How to discover self-love and live a truly healthy life) 『Louise L. Hay is the living evidence of her own teachings; she has healed her own life. She recovered from a horrible childhood; being unloved, and a child victim of sexual abuse (rape), as an adult she went through a divorce when she had finally started to trust life, and later in life she self-treated her own cancer and recovered completely with a new and healthier diet and different thought patterns; all according to her own teachings and discoveries...
I watched Louise L. Hay on Oprah Winphrey show and was immediately impressed with the beauty and poise of the 80 year-young woman talking, laughing, being so present, so relaxed, so happy, so glowing. At 75, this amazing woman started taking yoga lessons, and at 76 she took up ball-room dancing, and she tells us that she is looking forward to the next 20 interesting years! What a wonderful role model this woman is to all of us!
Her life story could fill three movies; all fascinating, deeply moving.
Her book is her testament. It is simple and wise, kind but ... unbending.
According to Louise L. Hay and many sage individuals from ancient days, the body speaks to us and it tells us why we are in pain or why we suffer from a certain particular dis-ease. Thoughs can be poisonous, and just like food they can poison not only our lives and mental health but our bodies.
Change the way you think and your life will change, too. Fear and anger expressed through different forms of thought patterns contribute to dis-eases.
There is so much potential in all of us and it is never too late! Louise L.Hay gives examples and provides excersises for self-healing. This is a book that has healed so many lives, and that is why is it remains a bestseller. I strongly recommend it!
L. Holm author』 『Louise explains how limiting beliefs and ideas are often the cause of illness, and how you can change your thinking...and improve the quality of your life.』 『If you haven't seen Hay House's Lifestyles series of gorgeous gift books, there is no better way to acquaint yourself than with publisher/author Louise Hay'sYou Can Heal Your Life. A bestseller for many years,You Can Heal Your Lifehas been republished with bright, beautiful illustrations in full, living color and exquisite typography--each and every page is a work of art by artist Joan Perrin Falquet. The timeless message of the book is that we are each responsible for our own reality and "dis-ease." Hay believes we make ourselves ill by having thoughts of self-hatred. She includes a directory of ailments and emotional causes for each with a corresponding affirmation to help overcome the illness. For example, the probable cause of multiple sclerosis is "mental hardness, hard-heartedness, iron will, and inflexibility." The healing "thought pattern" would be: "By choosing loving, joyous thoughts, I created a loving joyous world. I am safe and free."--P. Randall Cohan』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Very funny but a little too intense) 『This book was cracking me up big time until I got to the chapters about meat. While I was expecting some of it, most of it was a little intense. I would definitely not read this book if you love meat, or skip those chapters. I really regret reading those chapters because I would have otherwise really enjoyed the book. I realize the meat industry is insane and disgusting, but I still love to eat meat. Reading actual comments from people who had worked in the meat industry was insane. It definitely made me want to never eat meat again. It actually made me want to puke. Yeah, why did I read it? I don't know. The rest of the book is really interesting and I love their approach. I know a ton of people who need to read this book. Their opinions are a little extreme. Well, a lot extreme. Basically they are telling you that you can never be skinny unless you become a vegan. Everything but organic veggies are bad for you and will kill you. It's one thing to become a vegetarian and it's another thing to believe that the only things you can eat are organic. It's proof that everything we are putting into our body really is bad for us in the end. Nothing is safe anymore. What has this world come to really.』
(Concerning the Audiobook) 『This review is pertains ONLY to the audiobook. As a vegetarian who is working toward being a vegan, I am always looking for inspiration and new sources of material to help me reinforce what has always been a difficult transition for me. Staying on the wagon, so to speak, is something I have to work at each day. I purchased Skinny Bitch as an audiobook to listen to on my iPod. That was a mistake. I'm sure that had I gotten the print version, I would be giving this title a 5-star glowing review. I found the information, the tone, and the humor very much to my liking, and it is definitely motivational. The recording, however, infuriated me.
The reader, Renee Rodman, has a voice that didn't particularly please me. I found her inflection and timing awkward...but that's largely a matter of taste, and I wouldn't judge an audiobook harshly based on that alone. In fact, I've listened to other audiobooks narrated by Ms. Rodman without any complaint. What I object to with Skinny Bitch applies primarily to Rodman's reading of Chapter 6. In Chapter 6, entitled, "You Are What You Eat," the authors describe the horrific processes employed in industrial slaughterhouses. As a Southerner, I was red with anger less than 5 minutes into the reading. In no other part of the book does Rodman display a Southern accent of any kind, but the moment she begins reading quotations from slaughterhouse workers who tortured animals, she puts on this gravelly, affected, redneck facsimile of what is supposed to pass for a Southern accent. People slaughter pigs, poultry, and beef cattle in every part of the country, so I resent (more than I can say) having this woman characterize these soulless and violent people as Southerners when she obviously doesn't speak that way, herself. The authors gave no indication or judgment in their wording that would justify Rodman's choice to read Chapter 6 in this way, and--honestly--it ruined the book for me that first go around. I have listened to the book several times since, but I always skip chapter 6.
If you buy this book, and I recommend that you do, PLEASE don't buy the audiobook. It's not a good reading, and Chapter 6 is serious information that every American should know about and force themselves to face. Having it cartooned down into a redneck joke cheapens the material and promotes an undeserved stereotype.
Get the print version. Read it. And then...try to go vegetarian or vegan. It's good for your body; it will make you healthier; it will make weight loss easier for you; and it's the right thing to do.』
(Very Informative Book) 『I was pleasantly surprised by the information available in this book. It is evident that a tremendous amount of research as I learned things regarding the treatment of animals, meat products, and diary that I had no idea were the norm. This book has changed my life, in that I have totally altered my eating habits and have a new found respect for eating the fruits of the land. Although the language at times may be a little 'risque', with an open mind you will be surprisingly enlightened. I totally recommend this book to anyone questioning the reasoning behind becoming a Vegetarian. In a previous review somone indicated this book supported eating disorders, I totally disagree as choices are offered that allows you to have a healthy food regimen. Thank you Ladies for opening my eyes. Those who are on the surface regarding purchasing...just do it, you will not be sorry.』
(Awesome! Stop dieting Start eating right) 『Honestly reading this book was a turning point for me, I stopped thinking about becoming a vegetarian and finally became one. The book is hilarious and brutally honest. Some of the opinions are extreme but honestly, I appreciated that they didn't sugar coat it. Would definitely recommend the recipe book as all the recipes are DIVINE! Vegetarian or not my entire family enjoyed every single recipe that came from this book. I disagree with those saying the statements in the book are false as I checked many of them with nutritionists and online. Of course there is always differing opinions when it comes to nutrition but the majority of claims in this book are based on studies or at least agree with ones I've read.
I've been a vegetarian for 2 years now and I would never go back to eating meat. The health benefits, environmental benefits, and of course moral benefits make me wonder how I was ever not a vegetarian. Not to mention that as soon as I stopped eating meat excess weight seemed to melt before my eyes, and I wasn't dieting! I was eating foods I love. It's crazy to think where I would be today if I hadn't bought this book. But I'm glad I did. I'm in the best shape and healthier than I've ever been, and I haven't been on a diet since. I'm a skinny bitch just like the book promised! lmao I just eat healthy, being a vegetarian makes this easy to do.
HIGHLY recommend! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. :-)』
(Conflicted) 『I just finished this book, and I remain conflicted. It was an easy read - I completed it at one sitting more or less. It was also sort of funny. The thing is - after the first few profanity laced name calling lines - I lost interest and wanted to focus on the more positives attributes of the book. It got distracting. What I did love about this book was the inclusion of the hard truths about factory farming and the boiling down of science into terms I could easily understand. This was particularly useful to me in the sugar chapter ! (I'd sooner die than eat meat, eggs, or dairy but sugar is like a siren's song to me argh!) It wasn't until the end (and in fact the very last page which I almost missed) that the bitchy swagger was toned down and laughingly explained away. All in all, I'm keeping "Naturally Thin in my bag as an emergency reminder book and keeping this one in the kitchen for the meal suggestions, the links, and the food lists.』 『El franco enfoque de este libro es el adecuado para aquellos que han intentado perder peso y mantenerse, y no lo han conseguido. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Too small for toddlers) 『I wish I would've gotten the version with the hard pages because it was a gift for a 1 year old girl. I didnt realize it was so small with paper pages. But, other than that, I love the story!』
(Classic) 『It's just a lovely book with lovely pictures it's a great book also for those starting to read. all my nieces and nephews love this book. very popular』
(Pleased) 『My three year old daughter loves it. She has memorized most of the book. She can fit her pinky through the hole and wiggles it as she says what kind of food it is. The artwork is really fun too.』
(A Wonderful Classic Baby Book) 『One Sunday morning a caterpillar hatches from an egg and eats his way through the week, each day eating one more item than the day before. The following Sunday he spins a cocoon and goes to sleep, waking as a beautiful butterfly. This wonderful book has a lot going for it: It utilizes the days of the week, counts from one to five, names a number of familiar foods, and traces the life cycle of a caterpillar. It also incorporates a charming humor when on Saturday, the caterpillar eats many foods beloved by small children (but not by caterpillars), and develops a stomachache. There is also a tactile element for younger readers, because as the caterpillar eats through each food he leaves a hole in the page, which is a cutaway revealing additional foods to come on the next day. The plot is simple enough to hold the attention of the toddlers for whom it is intended, while providing enough complexity to last longer than most toddler stories. It's brightly illustrated in Carle's inimitable collage style.
Because of its immense popularity, the book has appeared in many editions -- including board book, paperback, foam book, and pop-up. Since the 0-4 age is very rough on books, I recommend the sturdier versions.』
(Lovely book - great for little kids) 『My grandchidren really enjoy going through this book - the bright illustartions are very enticing. Makes great reading for little kids.』 『The Very Hungry Caterpillaris inarguably one of the most popular children's books of all time. Now, here is the Spanish board book version ofThe Very Hungry Caterpillar, filling an important niche for the youngest of Spanish-speaking children.』 『With its lovely, humorous illustrations and wonderful narrative about a hungry caterpillar growing up to be a beautiful butterfly, Eric Carle's story touches anyone who still has some growing to do. Along with reassuring repetition--"He was still hungry ..."--the book includes some wonderful interactive moments: what youngster can resist sticking a finger through that hole in the page as his ravenous friend makes his way through various delicacies?』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (WRONG book) 『I bought the (Spanish Edition) of "The Stand" by Stephen King and the book I received if the English edition. That was the only problem so next time you have to be more careful about language matters, i can read in both languages but if i buy a book in Spanish that's what i expect. Shipping was normal and the book is in good condition. I understand these things happens, that's why i'm writing this review. Thanks.』
(Remember it being better) 『I read this book a long time ago, so I decided to buy it again. I remembered it being better, but all in all it was a good read.』
(Strangely Beautiful, Yet Dated) 『Stephen King has long explored mankind's fears, particularly as they relate to the life of regular Americans. His writing is sprawling, crass, and sometimes beautiful--and in these ways he captures much of what we see in our fellow human beings. After hearing for years that "The Stand" was his best book, I plowed into these 1000+ pages with great anticipation.
The story is set in 1985 (my year of high school graduation), and follows a growing cast of characters caught up in the horror of a national, possibly international, crisis caused by the release of a super-virus that wipes out nearly all those exposed. Government error and warmongering have led to this widespread destruction, but it's the average Joes who pull together to carve out a new niche for themselves and their children--if, indeed, any children will be born uninfected. We don't know why certain people have survived. We don't really know what happens to the government or military. We are left to fill in a lot of blanks, and this adds to the claustrophobic sense of doom. These feelings are enhanced by the three-dimensional characters King gives us, such as Larry, Stu, Fran, Nadine, and Harold.
Overshadowing the entire story are two symbolic, yet believable characters--an old black woman who represents Godly good; and a shadowy figure in Las Vegas who represents evil. The lines are drawn sharply, and the writing is sometimes apocalyptic, even biblical in tone. The larger themes are expressed best through the individuals who make secret and not-so-secret choices that affect their community (another Christian theme).
As the battle lines are drawn, the story reaches a crescendo that can be surprising, yet inevitable. Hope resounds, but at great cost.
I kept thinking I'd like the book more, in light of all the great stuff I'd heard. In many ways it was fantastic. On the other hand, it felt bloated and cumbersome. The main problem, for me, is that it's a dated story. The zeitgeist of the 80s, the Cold War era, had us thinking of nuclear holocaust and End Times survival. We lived in perpetual fear of something catastrophic being caused by government abuse. We were told the ozone layer would be depleted by the year 2000 and that we would need umbrellas to go outside. (Okay, so that's not much different than the global warming themes we hear recited in the news.) Overall, though, I believe citizens in a post-9/11 America are more conditioned for large scale disaster and less focused on government solutions.
King has been accused of losing some of his touch in recent years. I wonder, looking back, if this criticism has more to do with our reading habits and a population's evolving view of society and the fears that plague it. If released today, I wonder if this book would be welcomed with as much warmth as it was in its time. It's a book of horror, humanity, and strange beauty, yet reflects the zeitgeist of another generation, and in that way it lost some of its power for me.』
(TOO FABULOUS - a must read - the BEST Stephen King book out there!) 『This Stephen King book was so HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to me - I had to buy it out of curiosity. What a fascinating and entertaining read...Hard to put down and deliciously perfect King writing!!』
(If I was stranded on a deserted island, this is the book I'd want with me) 『If I were stranded on a deserted island, and could only have one book with me, this would probably be it. It's not the most intelligent answer, but it's true.
I've read The Stand from cover-to-cover probably 20 times in the past 15 or so years. I read it for the first time as a sophomore in high school, and still love it as much today as I did in the first reading. If anything, the story has grown as I have -- I relate more strongly to different characters now than I did then. I find different parts more horrifying now, and have a greater depth of understanding of the real terrors this book holds.
Fans of King have probably already read this book, possibly many times as I have. Fans of horror will appreciate the stark and believable nightmare King weaves in The Stand. But the truly horrifying part of the book -- the realistic and very possible biological disaster that signals the decline of society leading to "The Stand" is what gives me bad dreams. It's great stuff. I would recommend it to just about anyone that isn't afraid of the dark corners of what could be, and who is open to a horror story that is equal parts science and magic.』 『When a man crashes his car into a petrol station, he brings with him the foul corpses of his wife and daughter. He dies and it doesn't take long for the plague which killed him to spread across America and the world. This work comes from the author of "The Tommyknockers", "Misery" and "Pet Sematary".』 『In 1978, science fiction writer Spider Robinson wrote a scathing review ofThe Standin which he exhorted his readers to grab strangers in bookstores and beg them not to buy it.
The Standis like that. You either love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. Stephen King's most popular book, according to polls of his fans, is an end-of-the-world scenario: a rapidly mutating flu virus is accidentally released from a U.S. military facility and wipes out 99 and 44/100 percent of the world's population, thus setting the stage for an apocalyptic confrontation between Good and Evil.
"Iloveto burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess....The Standwas particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked onThe Standcame from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke."
There is much to admire inThe Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book.--Fiona Webster』

A friend of mine had a copy of this book but left it in a Taxi outside of Madrid. He was not a happy camper....the book had helped him through some tough communication situations. I bought the book on his recommendation and after looking over the text, I'm glad I did. It handles general everyday conversations with ease and clarity. I will pack this book for sure.』
(Easy Spanish Phrase Book: Over 770 Basic Phrases for Everyday Use) 『This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). Sometimes the quickest and easiest way to make yourself understood in a foreign language is to rely on a stock of phrases. With over 770 of the most commonly used phrases, the Easy Spanish Phrase Book is an ideal companion to traveling in a Spanish speaking country, as well as a great learning aide to help you memorize some key sentences.
The phrases are organized into easy to use categories, so you can quickly find the one that you need. You will find phrases for most common situations.
Even if you don't know a single word in Spanish, and have no prior knowledge you should be able to get by in many circumstances with this phrase book. Each phrase also has helpful pronunciation tips to make sure you are understood. Most phrases are short sentences, making them easy to remember and use. Practicing the phrases, paying particular attention to the pronunciation keys, can also help you to feel more comfortable speaking Spanish and build on your confidence.
Study topics such as introducing yourself, telling the time, ordering a meal, or making travel arrangements. A little regular study of the phrases will soon get you on the road to being able to have a basic conversation without relying on looking up each individual phrase.
For students with a little more knowledge, the book is a useful back up with plenty of phrases and vocabulary that you might not already know. Its handy compact size means that it can easily be carried around to have to hand when needed.
While you may not need all 770 phrases, you can memorize some of the phrases that you are likely to use and have the peace of mind that if you get stuck, you can probably find more useful phrases in the book.
The Easy Spanish Phrase Book is not a comprehensive way to learn how to speak Spanish but it is an ideal first step. A good phrase book is a great item to have in your language learning `tool kit', and this one is a great choice.
At such a low price, this little book is one of the wisest purchases you can make if you need to speak in Spanish.
In closing my review of this product, I'd like to share with you the three Amazon products that I have found most helpful in my pursuit to learn Spanish. If you are truly serious about achieving fluency, I'd recommend getting all 3 of them if you can afford it.
1. Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This is actually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasent to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.
2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs. Especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs and who is looking for a new way to make learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an easy and fun activity
3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitions entirely in Spanish. I use this one only because it was highly-recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches Spanish.

(Well Worth Buying, Studying and Taking on Vacation) 『I have always found Dover books to be worth the money. This one is no exception. Some reviewers remark that there is nothing in it that you wouldn't find in a college textbook or remember if you studied Spanish well in college. Yet this criticism misses the point of a phrasebook. A good phrasebook has organizing principles that enable the non-speaker of a language to quickly find what he or she needs to say, and hopefully be able to pronounce it right.
This Dover book is well organized. Another reviewer astutely observed that it is a good idea to study it before you need it. You'll know where the entries are that you are likely to need and you'll be able to practice saying them.
Sincerely,
Eric W. Vogt, Ph.D.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Hmm) 『Had to read this book for lit class..for me it was too much information..it talks about all of her life(child-adult) in too much detail..okay yes her stay with her aunt and her time at school was important but goodness get on with the story..a summary of that time would've been nice..the book is still good and this is a good copy to get』
(Gothic Romance Classic) 『On October 16th, of 1847, "Jane Eyre: An Autobiography", edited by Currier Bell (pseudonym of Charlotte Brontë) was published. It created some controversy at the time, as many believed it was written by a man. The novel was very popular when published, but critical reaction to it varied. Today, it is clearly a classic, the development of a young woman, who does not fit into the stereotype of a nineteenth century woman. She is not submissive, and she struggles to avoid being dependent on others. The original publication was in three volumes, but this Penguin Classics edition is based on the third edition of Jane Eyre, and it is the last edition which Charlotte Brontë edited and corrected.
The story covers Jane's life from her childhood until her marriage. The childhood chapters can be split into two sections, those where Jane, an orphan, was being raised by her Uncle's family, but her uncle has passed away and her aunt does not like her, but was forced to promise to take care of her. The key parts of this section are Jane's being rejected by the closest thing she has to a family, her morality, and her independence, i.e. her refusal to conform. The second part of her childhood is when she is sent to attend a charity school, called Lowood, where the pupils have to make do with substandard food and clothing. Here Jane finds one teacher who treats her, and the other students, well, Miss Maria Temple. One of the key things in this section is the difference between religion and morality, symbolized by Mr. Brocklehurst a clergyman who is mostly responsible for the appalling conditions at Lowood, and Jane and Miss Temple on the side of morality. Also key is Jane's witnessing her friend, Helen Burns, dying from a typhus epidemic, in spite of her goodness and her submission to the standards imposed by Mr. Brocklehurst and Miss Scatcherd, a teacher as cruel as Miss Temple is kind.
The story then picks up many years later, with Jane in position as a teacher at Lowood, but looking to move on. She advertises for a position as a governess and is hired by Mrs. Fairfax. She is to take care of Adèle Varens, a girl who is being taken care of by Mr. Rochester, the master of Thornfield Manor where Mrs. Fairfax is the housekeeper. This section has a lot to do with class, as well as morality. There is the difficulty of Jane falling in love with someone of a different class. There is also thelooking down on Jane as being of a lower class, by Mr. Rochester's peers. The morality questions are here to, in the comparison of the higher classes verses that of the lower class. Even Mr. Rochester's behavior is in question, in the events leading up to Jane leaving. Jane also finds out that she does have family left, and when it appears that she is to have everything, she sends a letter to her father's brother. It is this attempt to reconnect with family that causes her to lose nearly everything as it destroys what she thought she was about to have.
The next section details Jane's life after leaving Thornfield Manor. Here she loses almost everything, and is on death's door when she is on the doorstep of Moor House. The Rivers, St. John, Diana, and Mary. It is from this state of having nothing from which she recovers almost everything she could want. Here she recovers her health, she is employed again and regains much of her independence. St. John is in love with a woman, but he will not ask her because he is driven to devote his life to religion. He does find out Jane's true identity though, and this results in Jane learning she has family, and wealth that she didn't know she had. She is pressured by St. John to marry him and join him in his missionary life, but she knows that he doesn't love her. She rejects St. John, and instead goes to find her one love, Mr. Rochester. She now has wealth and family, and she learns that tragedies in Mr. Rochester's life have made what was once impossible possible.
It is a long and winding road which Jane travels in this novel. Probably best classified as a gothic romance, it deals with numerous issues and the strength of Jane's character serves as a good role model for young women, and for that matter anyone. The Penguin Classics edition is filled with supporting documentation as always. There is a wonderful introduction by Stevie Davies, along with a Chronology, suggestions for further reading, notes on the text, opinions of the press, and wonderful textual notes which enhance the reading experience and understanding of the reader. 』
(Great book, not recommended for required school reading) 『I cringe as I read the reviews here that were written by children who were forced to read this in school. I can imagine feeling similarly if I had to trudge through this very long, mature novel with its outdated language and flowery descriptions as a teenager. However, as an adult, I loved the book. I do think it is overly long and could have done without some of the passages that describe the scenery. The best parts of this book are in Jane's elaborate, vivid thoughts and her interactions with the various people she meets. In a book that is less good, I would've taken away a star for the excessive scenic descriptions, but the best things about this book make up for that.
Since there are already hundreds of reviews up here that go into what the story is about, I won't bother. What I will say is I am not generally a sentimental nor easily moved person, but I found this story very moving. I don't know if I'd recommend it to many men, and I'd probably not recommend it to anyone under 24. As an adult woman who spends much of her time lost in thought and doesn't always follow the most obvious path, I found it to be an excellent, engaging, and emotional read and am very glad I stuck with it until the end.』
(Simply put: a classic.) 『Never being a great fan of the Victorian period of English literature, I have always steered clear of the sisters Bronte, Jane Austin, and others of their ilk. It is amazing how much we miss when blinded by prejudice. I not only liked Jane Eyre immensely, but was very impressed by the literary abilities of Charlotte Bronte and regretted that I had not read the novel sooner. Although Bronte did not have the formal education and did not share the literary traditions enjoyed by some of her male colleagues, she grew up in a household in which storytelling was prominent and understood that the first task of any writer is the ability to tell a good story. Jane Eyre is a wonderful creation, a story that keeps the reader's interest from the first, and one in which Bronte introduces to the reading public one of the first truly modern heroines.
Charlotte Bronte's novel is a complex and structured work and contains within it elements of romance, picaresque wanderings and a preoccupation for the Gothic themes of mystery and the supernatural. But to describe the work simply as a very good Gothic novel would be to ignore the remarkable characterization that Bronte achieves in the creation of the character of Jane Eyre. Bronte's character is quite unique when compared to other female heroines of the era. Jane is not beautiful and does not enjoy any of the privileges of wealth or social position, and it is clear from the beginning that if Jane is to make her way in the world she will have to do it with a combination of hard work and intelligence, and not be afraid to question accepted social conventions. The decision of Bronte to narrate the tale through the eyes of Jane bonds the reader and the main character together creating an intimacy that is first rate. We share all her hardships and experiences from Gateshead to the final reunion with Mr. Rochester, and sympathize with her moral dilemmas and her indignant stand against religious hypocrisy (a feeling strong enough to have her expound more fully in the preface to the second edition of her novel: "[The world] may hate him who dares to scrutinise and expose - to rase the gilding, and show base metal under it - to penetrate the sepulchre, and reveal charnel relics: but, hate as it will, it is indebted to him").
Although the creation of the character of Jane is Bronte's greatest achievement, she is possessed with the talent to write a story that is exciting, mysterious and ultimately rewarding - in other words, a pure classic. Bronte may not possess in full the literary style of some of her contemporaries, but she writes with assurance and surprises the reader with some extraordinary passages, beautiful examples that combine nostalgia, religious mysticism and poetic rhythm into a wonderful prose. The influence of the book is still alive over a century later. Jean Rhys uses the novel as the point of departure for her Wide Sargasso Sea, and groups as divergent as Marxists, feminists, and Horatio Alger types all use the book as part of their lexicon.』
(Excellent Condition at an Amazing Price) 『Speedy delivery. The seller said it had some highlighting and marks but i see only one sentence highlighted! Amazing condition. 5 stars.』 『As an orphan, Jane Eyre is far from happy. She endures the hatred of her aunt and cousins, but finally begins to find some pleasure as a teacher. When she becomes a governess working for Mr Rochester, Jane hopes she might at last have found love and kindness.』
