(Disappointed!)
(fine satirical time travel romantic suspense) The previous reviewers were far too generous in my opinion. This book was TERRIBLE! The plot was plodding and highly unbelievable. The humor was slight to totally non-existent (and stupid as well). And the characters were as unsympathetic as you can imagine-I didn't care anything about any of them. I LOVE time travel romances in general but this one left me cold as well as $7.00 in the hole. What a waste of my time and money. I thought this book would be much better. I truly wanted to like this book; I looked forward to buying it. I love time travel romances, however, I found this one lacking in many areas. I found the plot to be ho-hum, not very interesting. The characters, except for one from 1929, weren't that endearing or likeable-I didn't care what happened to them! The book is littered with modern slang and cliches, so much so that it was annoying. The book's attempts at being funny and comedic seemed contrived to me as though the author tried too hard at being funny. The only good parts of the book took place when the female character from 1929 was involved in the action. Other than that, it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. The ending is a real letdown! Rent the book from the library is you must read it; don't buy it. Oh,well. Not a total waste of time but not a good read, either. Journalist Dora Duncan resolves to avoid dangerous assignments, drop her boyfriend Nick who apparently dropped her already without informing her as he no longer calls, e-mails etc., and especially no longer wait for her sweetheart on Valentine's Day. At work and at love, she is disenchanted.
The FBI recruits Dora on a dangerous assignment though they do not like using civilians. They want her to travel back in time to February 1929 to prevent Nick, already there, from changing history. She agrees and in a blink of an eye she and a rodent go back to 1929 Chicago. There she finds herself in a wild scenario as her new boyfriend is a mobster who adores her feet and another gangster wants her in his bed; she has not had as many sexual opportunities in her entire adult life mostly in the next century. Still the mission is simple keep Nick out of the St. Valentine's Day massacre.
This fine satirical time travel romantic suspense will please sub-genre readers due to the solid intelligent characterizations. Dora and her ratty companion behave like fish out of water and the people she meets are eccentric caring individuals who happen to be on the illegal side of Prohibition. As Marianne Mancusi did with the frivolous fun frolic, A CONNECTICUT FASHIONISTA IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT, WHAT, NO ROSES? is a delightfully amusing lighthearted romp.
Harriet Klausner
Unless Dora Duncan can stop it, it's going to be another St. Valentine's Day Massacre. A year ago, her (now ex) boyfriend Nick stood her up at the worst possible moment. That was when she gave up important TV reporting for stories like "Too Stressed for Sex." And though such clips have a certain relevance, things have been a whole lot quieter. Too quiet. Until now.Now she's gotta go back in time (don't ask!) and stop that very same Nick from messing up the time-space continuum. She has to travel back to a place where everybody speaks easy and cuts a rug-and this Chicago ain't no musical. Here, there are tommy guns and torpedoes, guys and dolls, gin joints, flappers, stoolies, rats and a whole lot more; and prohibition means anything but no. It's the 1920s. Time for Dora to roar. customer 's review (Beautifully Done)
(THREE TERRIFIC REVIEWS!!) This is a time travel story that takes place when a successful entertainment attorney, Katherine (Kate), decides to take a spontaneous trip after experiencing strange dreams that make her long for something more out of life. She divorced years ago and is alone in the world except for two close friends who co-own a talent agency with her. Her trip to Northern California takes her to a small town and while on a walk along a river bed she slips and hits her head after seeing a vision of an Indian woman waving to her. When she wakes up she finds herself rescued by a reclusive mountain man. Although he speaks with a refined English accent, her giant rescuer is hidden behind a scruffy beard and long hair and he acts like someone out of the previous century. Kate wonders why she finds this man attractive after the two years of celibacy since her divorce. Flynt Avery wonders about the strange woman he finds. Although she dresses like a loose woman, she acts and talks like a prim lady. Flynt wonders why he finds himself attracted to this woman after two years of reclusiveness after the disappearance and presumed death of his wife, Little Deer. When Kate insists he take her to the nearest town, she is shocked to discover she has traveled back in time to the late 1800's. She pleads with Flynt to take her back with him, but then he is taunted by an arrogant French gambler who claims Flynt killed his wife. During their fight, Flynt is knifed and nearly killed by the Frenchman. Kate takes Flynt to a boarding house ran by two friendly spinsters and helps nurse him back to health. During his recovery, Flynt keeps having a strange dream where he is alone in the woods and a cougar approaches him and appears to be ready for attack. During Flynt and Kate's time at the boardinghouse they fall in love and she returns with him back to the cabin. They become lovers and decide they will marry, although neither one is certain Kate will remain in this time. Flynt's Indian grandfather warns that there is danger and uncertainty ahead, but that the two will not say goodbye. Before they can do anything, Flynt is accused of the murder of the Frenchman's wife and son and it is up to Kate to save him from the hangman's noose. They also must figure out what their dreams mean, although it is now clear that Little Deer sent Kate to save Flynt from hanging.
This is a wonderful story, but there are a couple of small flaws. The author does a pretty good story of describing Flynt's background, but there are too many gaps in Kate's. Also, the love scenes seem rushed and hurried as though the author feels obligated to add them in and is hurrying through them. Otherwise, I found it to be beautifully done. Jill Marie Landis says: "Outstanding! THIS TIME TOGETHER is the perfect blend of romance, adventure and magic."Rendezvous Reviews: "It kept me spellbound. This author knows how to combine the paranormal, history, fiery passion and romance to produce a first rate novel. I loved it." Romantic Times: THIS TIME TOGETHER is sensuous and heart-rending...The reader will not be disappointed as Ms. Liepitz weaves a fascinating, captivating time-travel to steal romance reader's hearts..." When Katherine Marhsall, an entertainment lawyer, dreams of living a simpler, slower-paced life, she suddenly awakens in a nineteenth-century log cabin populated by a handsome mountain man. Maggie Owen's work on a grant to find a lost necropolis is filled with the superstitions of the local workers. Nothing, however, prepares her for being swept back into the past to the time of Pharaoh Akhenaton. Maggie will have to learn to deal with the Egyptian political intrigues while falling in love with Ramose Nakh-Min, one of Queen Nefertiti's relatives. Will the same power that sent Maggie back to Ramose allow her to stay with him forever?
I have to confess that I was more than thrilled to see Kathryn Meyer Griffith had another story out about Egypt. Years ago, I remember reading another book by her that featured Egyptian characters (although somewhere along the way I've lost my copy of that book) and still remember being impressed by it. I was not disappointed with EGYPTIAN HEART.
Kathryn Meyer Griffith shines when writing stories such as EGYPTIAN HEART. Her gift at incorporating historical facts about the Egyptian pharaohs and the politics surrounding them is simply incredible. The vivid descriptions of the Egyptian desert and the household of Ramose are so real that it is easy to envision them.
Maggie is the kind of heroine that makes the reader just want to cheer. Even in an environment like ancient Egypt, she is fighting against the injustices she sees and trying to incorporate positive changes. Her upbeat attitude is refreshing.
Kathryn Meyer Griffith is an author who has stood the test of time. Her books today are just as strong as her past efforts. Without a doubt, she is an autobuy author for me as her books remain treasured keepers. EGYPTIAN HEART is easily recommended!
COURTESY OF CK2S KWIPS AND KRITIQUES Maggie Owen's a beautiful, spirited Egyptologist.but lonely. Even a trip to Egypt on a grant to search for a necropolis beyond the Gizah pyramids doesn't make her happy. Love is missing. Then she uncovers Ramose Nakh-Min's tomb and an amulet from his sarcophagus hurls her back to 1340 B.C.-where she falls for Ramose, who serves Pharaoh Akhenaton, and who she's destined to love. Maggie's mistaken for a runaway slave and stands out with her fair coloring and jinn green eyes. Some say she's magical. Evil. Some try to kill her. She's fallen into perilous times. The people, angry that Pharaoh Akhenaton set Queen Nefertiti aside and forced them to worship Aton, instead of many gods, rise up against him. And Maggie's caught in the middle of it. Desperately in love with Ramose, she finds a way to remain with him-and to make a difference in his world. Maggie has finally found love.

(Amazing Journey through time!) I am a time travel lover, I devour all the books about traveling thru time I can get my hands on. This is one awesome series, and #7 of the series is different than the others but still gets my vote of 5 stars! A must read for time travelers who love Holly Van Horn. Although it is tough to beat the success of her previous six books, Mrs Van Horne has put forth her best book yet in Beneath the Wings of Isis. Over 500 pages of brilliant writing, Beneath the Wings of Isis is brilliant. You will not be able to put this book done! This book left me breathless. I loved the whole premise of 1 man trying to go back in time to avenge a wrong done to him and thousands of other people. The search for the vampire that bit him is a journey you will never forget! Yet through the whole process the man learns something of himself and changes to become a better person, without having to kill his intended victim! Learning the history of ancient Egypt was enthralling. The main characters of this book will take you by the hand on this incredible journey!! I definitely recommend this book to those interested in ancient Egypt and vampires and to those who enjoy a romance novel full of surprises. (Loved this book-- so I bought more copies for my friends!)
(Pleasant surprise.)
(Born in Noblesville, Indiana) It's fun to read a book when you recognize street names, landmarks, and small towns. This was hard to put down. What great comparisons are made between the 1890's and present day Hamilton County. Well done!! I love to read, I read a book a week and I know when I've got something wonderful. Kurt Meyer made his characters very real. You actually felt what the people in the book felt. When a writer can make you laugh out loud when you are alone, that is a good writer. Why this young man does not have this book available in bookstores everwhere, I just don't understand. I would love to see this become a triligy! I'm from Indianapolis and initially purchased the book because it centered around Noblesville, a community north of Indy. I thought it would be fun to read a book with some familiar sites I could identify with. Kurt Meyer surprised me with an interesting story that I couldn't put down. I highly recommend this book and purchased more copies to give as gifts. Normally I am not a fan of science fiction or a lover of history so I didn't expect to be so taken with the story of a small town history teacher who slipped into another era. The author conveyed his interest in Victorian architecture without becoming pedantic and made the time warp seem almost believable. It was particularly rewarding that the ending of the story was not entirely predictable. The author successfully brought out the advantages and disadvantages of life in both time periods though it was easy to see where his preference lies. I admit it wasn't love at first sight when this book was chosen as our book club book. I couldn't imagine that I would find this "history" book at all entertaining...but by the fifth chapter, I'd fallen head over heels in love!! In love with the characters, in love with the storyline, in love with the setting and yes, even in love with the history! I have a renewed appreciation for the town I was born in and where my grandparents still live. It was fascinating reading about the places that are familiar to me and about some of the history of it. Although, the story is fiction, the setting is not and because of that, this book was REAL. A riveting novel about fatal attraction between two young lovers entangled in time. In this fresh contribution to our cultural legacy from the Hoosier heartland, protagonist David Henry, through a combination of technology and serendipity, steps back in time more than a hundred years.David falls in love with Mary and the era she belongs to. Although sensing the tragedy of the fact that they are separated by a hundred years, David and Mary are too much in love to say goodbye. Stardust offers a thought-provoking look at the dramatic changes in attitudes, morals and values that come with technology, advancement and growth while proving that regardless of the time period in which we live, love transcends time.

(enjoyable)
(Abosultely stunning!!)
(This book can be reread time and again)
(Just not worth it) Ghosts, Time Travel, Fairies, Magic and Scotland figure in this delightful story. I liked it. I had one little wish -- I got a bit confused with the love scenes - wish they were a little more detailed and longer. This is the first book I've read by Melanie Jackson and I found it to be a enjoyable book. It was a bit hard to follow in parts but the story line was interesting enough to keep me at it. I liked the fact that the heroine is a strong yet vulnerable woman who can stand on her own but also knows when to lean on her man. The hero is a very sensitive man who probably because of his heritage makes him irresitible to his heroine. This is a combo of a timeswept/fantasy romance. The heroine, Taffy starts off in the 1880's and ends up in the 1640's. She is helping her father with his archeology by taking photographs of the bones they have discovered of a piper. The piper was killed after warning of a trap. His hands had been cut off and he bled to death. While taking the shot she sees a ghost who happens to be the piper himself. The piper, Malcolm, is our hero. She is sent back in time to save him by the fairies. She and he both are of fairy blood and the fairies need them. Together they must overcome their human enemies and the fairy dangers which await them. I enjoyed the excitement in this book. You weren't sure what was going to happen next. I plan on reading more of thisd authors works in the future. I am one of the male managers of WISE Writers and Readers, and I generally leave the reviewing to Lady Ashorah, the head of WISE. But I wanted to say the male readers at WISE loved this book!!Melanie is a super writer, with a haunting, evocative quality that leads the reader into a drama drawn from real historical events. She is one of the strongest historical writers around. WISE WrIters and Readers Book of the Month for MAY and Book of the Year for 2001 Taffy and Malcolm are extremely beleivable charactors in a fantastic faerie filled plot. The plot is fey but the Taffy and Malcolm are 3-D humans. Part of what makes this book so believalbe is that it is based on real historical fact and the resulting ghost story that sprang up around a real life piper/hero. The real Malcolm knowingly gave his life for what he beleived in. Moreover, the death he suffered was not kind. This books just gets better the more often you read it. Ok, I read hundreds of books a year, and in that time frame, there are about 1 to 2 books I just can't finish. Night Visitor is my second one this year (and hopefully my last). There were so many typos and glaring grammatical mistakes (two things I usually read right over) that I just could not get into the story. I got about half way through it, and found that the characters were dull, flat and wholly unrealistic. I tried to suspend my belief because this is a fantasy (fairie story) but nothing I read made me want to continue on.A female photographer from the late 1800's, with a father who doesn't understand her and is patronizing coupled with a Scottish piper that has farie blood (oh yes, let us not forget the diluted fairie blood in our heroine as well!) sets our story. The piper is killed for warning his allies about a trap set. For this, his hands are cut off and he dies (supposedly bad luck for the killers since you are not supposed to kill a piper). His pipes haunt the castle for 200 years until our heroine touches his newly uncovered bones and makes a connection to him. This is the first few chapters and the most interesting part of the story. Our heroine then goes to the past to rescue our hero. Everything else seems to rush past, with little description or depth. I rarely do this, but I suggest you steer clear of Night Visitor, there are better stories out there. Rerations < Night Visitor (Timeswept) >

customer 's review (Very enjoyable read)
(At times delightful; sometimes unlikable)
(Any Time, Any Place -- very highly recommended)
(A funny, fast-paced read!!!) Thoroughly enjoyed this story&its sequel "To charm a knight". A very unusal premise in that it is a time-travel agent who is a wizard from the 19th. century, takes you to where you want to go in his shop "Any time, any place". And it only costs $1,000,000 to find your hearts desire.
Unique way to time travel; a time travel agency! I liked much of this story. It involves a very young duke, the nephew of our hero. Someone is trying to kill him and our heroine and hero become involved in trying to find out who that is.
What bothered me was that Arden (our time traveler) felt the only way to make Royce learn to have fun again was to seduce him. I found that thinking flawed and was disappointed when he finally succumbed to her - after all he was trying to be honorable and true to his betrothed. Plus Royce was worried about who was trying to do away with the duke (his 12 year old nephew William). I felt there were other ways to help remember more carefree times... Both Arden and Royce seemed a bit shallow - I found no depth to them!
Other characters in the book were interesting. Giles and the Dowager Duchess, Dora, were well fleshed out and their romance was actually better than the "main" event. Arden's Aunt Lavinia added a nice touch to the story.
All loose ends were tied up much too quickly, plus Arden was too modern throughout the book - I think she would have been rejected by everyone in society for her shocking ways --
Good for a quick read, not a keeper.
Any Time, Any Place is an agency appearing in the French quarter overnight. With its artistically aged sign and poster of the Roman Coliseum and the Acropolis, not as look now, but as they looked when new, Arden St. Clare couldn't resist investigating. The proprietor assures her the time-travel agency will only be there a week, "depending on whether the solar winds stay calm." He recommends the Regency period, a time of romantics and rebels.Arden has dreamed for years about living out just one of her fantasies. An orphan, her aunt and uncle would not like it if she takes a vacation. They only believe in the pleasure of making more money. St. Claires would never ride in Mardi Gras parades or rub elbows with movie stars. They would behave as tradition behooves. So time-travel offers the perfect solution! She can be carefree and reckless, and the St. Claires will never know. Her antics won't disrupt the New Orleans's upper crust, or her family business. Unfortunately, solar flares throw the trip off a bit, and she lands in the right time, wrong place. Dropped off, the proprietor and the time-travel shop disappear before Arden can ask any questions. She walks through the woods, pausing when she hears angry voices. Two men are leaving a young duke, dosed with laudanum to freeze to death in the woods. Rescuing the boy after they leave, Arden takes him to a nearby cottage to spend the night. The next morning, a searching uncle discovers them. Rather than a season among London's high society, Arden finds herself in the company of the young duke and his uncles. Captain Royce Warrick, a hero of the Battle of Waterloo, is terribly suspicious of Arden and how she came to be in the middle of woods. Someone has made several attempts on his nephew's life. Royce can't decide if Arden is friend or foe, yet he can't deny his attraction for this unusual woman. Arden's struggle with the language and the conventions of the time is humorous, while her cheerful attitude and flair keep the novel moving along quickly. Linda Kay does a remarkable job of making the impossible not only plausible, but also delightful in the plotting of this memorable tale. If you read only one time travel novel this year, make it TO TAME A ROGUE What a fabulous book! Linda Kay's TO TAME A ROGUE had me laughing out loud and was the perfect way to spend a lazy, rainy afternoon. I can't wait to read more by this writer. If a time travel agency appeared in your neighborhood, when would you go to? When Arden St. Clare came upon Any Time, Any Place while walking home, she arranged a trip to Regency England. "To Tame A Rogue" tells the story of Arden's voyage through time from the present to 1816. Among other things, she saves a kidnapped duke, meets one of her ancestors, and untames a tamed rake.
