(Hot Stuff!!!)

(Great part of Series)

(Awesome Read!!!)

(Pretty Good Except For a Few Things)

(Fantastic as ever)
I love Sandra Hill books. She's very funny and puts a lot of fun and kinky stuff in her books. This one is NO Different!!! I LOVE IT!!! Buy it now if you want steamy scenes with a Navy Seal!
This book was a great installment to a great series of books by Sandra Hill. I read it in about 4 hours.
Down and Dirty (Viking Time-Travel)

I so love this series... I read them all, and I re-read them. If you love men, you've got to read this series. The heroes are delicious! The heroines are so human, and with strong senses of humors! I laughed, I cryed. Its a mini vacation from everyday life. LOL!!

This was my first book by this author. It was a pretty good story, but I agree with another reviewer who said the dialog was pretty bad. I quickly got very tired of the way Britta kept mis-pronouncing Zack's name deliberately. It stopped being cute fast. I also didn't understand why the author made it seem that Britta had such a difficult time with some of the words she heard over and over. Britta and the other females had a whole evening discussing orgasims but the next day Britta still couldn't pronounce it correctly. I also wasn't sure why Britta, after being in our modern time for four days still had trouble believing she was in the future. I mean, really . . . there had to be an awful lot of obvious differences that couldn't be explained in a 1,000 year time change! Small issues like that made the story a little less enjoyable for me. Half way through the book it did get better and I did like the book well enough to check out some other books by this author. I would like to read Cage's story.
The book is as good if not better than her others. Love to read Sandra Hill and can't wait to get the next book.
Punished for an indiscretion, Navy SEAL and all-around tough guy Zachary Floyd is forced to head a new SEAL-like program for women. There he meets an alluring Norsewoman, who's escaped a nunnery, her father, and the eleventh century altogether.

(Nice escape for one story (4 stars). Only ok for second story (3 stars).)

(Two that sizzle)

(Loved Kieran the Black!)

(Loved it!!!!!!!!!!!)

I like both stories but i gravitate to Julie Black's story more .....Good read very entertaining.

4 stars for GOD OF FIRE by Jaid Black.
Fun and enjoyable. This was one of the first stories Jaid wrote and is a little less explicit than her later works. The gods are being mischievous among themselves. They bring Dara from the future 2003 to Ragnar, a Viking in 820 AD. He needs to get her pregnant within 3 months to meet the gods' requests. It was a nice escape for romance and sex.

Data:
Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: sixteen. Setting 2003 Ohio US and 820 AD Norway. Copyright: 2000. Genre: time travel and paranormal romance.

For a list of my reviews of other Jaid Black books, see my 5 star review of "One Dark Night" posted 4/2/08.

3 stars for KIERAN THE BLACK by Julia Templeton.
Ok story, but it was lacking in emotional fulfillment for me. There were a lot of sex scenes, but they were pretty similar to each other. I like erotic stories but I prefer those which have something else like laughter, surprise, witty conversation, anticipation of an emotional relationship or feelings of fulfillment. This story was missing something for me.

Story Brief:
Current day Lizzie time travels to 1067 where she finds herself as the wife of Kieran the Black. The wife she replaced hated him and was still a virgin. She flirts with Kieran and his knights. She initiates sex with him. They have a great relationship. She tries to prevent his early death by warning him that he will be killed by his own knight Hugh.

Data:
Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: twelve. Setting: current day and 1067 England. Copyright: 2003. Genre: erotic time travel romance.

In Warrior, Jaid Black and Julia Templeton present a pair of erotic time travel novels that sizzle with sensuality as they capture reader interest.

Templeton's Kieran the Black catapults our 39-year-old modern heroine Lizzie, an unhappy journalist betrayed by her former husband, into 1067 England, where she is suddenly inside the body of Lady Elizabeth, an 18-year-old Saxon maid forced to marry her Norman conqueror Kieran the Black. While the real Elizabeth despised the handsome and high-principled warrior, Lizzie is impressed by his kindness, integrity, and overwhelmingly arousing huge physical presence. She soon wins him over with her refreshing humor and audacity as well as her considerable feminine charms, and they embark on a passionate relationship. But can she save him from the traitorous death that was to be his fate?

Templeton takes a fun premise and weaves a fast-paced story with likeable characters and plenty of action. She also evokes a believable feeling of medieval life while showing the fascinating way a modern woman might survive and even flourish in such an environment. Kieran the Black is a thoroughly likable and engaging sensual romp.

Black's God of Fire is another passionate time-travel treat, a fairy tale that whisks unhappy modern Dara back to 820 Norway where she is forced to marry irresistible hunk Ragnar Valkraad. Ragnar, a powerful warrior capable of deep affection, has been ordered by the goddess Frigg to marry Dara and within one year to have a child, or no more warriors will be allowed into Valhalla, the god Odin's warrior heaven. Frigg, furious with her philandering husband Odin, has hatched a vengeful scheme to keep his beloved warriors out of Valhalla, since Ragnar appears to be infertile. But Ragnar's never met anyone as appealing as Dara, and Dara has never met anyone as arousing as Ragnar. Their growing relationship is the most passionate and all-consuming of their lives. Yet Dara's determination to run away may destroy their emerging love.

This engaging story is highly charged with erotic tension and colorful images. Black's sense of humor makes the story even more delightful. The only problem is dizzying switches in character point of view, as often as every paragraph, can confuse the reader and take her out of the story. Still, Black has, as usual, fashioned a winning tale that combines an appealing premise with voluptuous sensuality.

I found myself in a frustrating dilemma: a lot of books, but nothing to read. I wanted a light read to give balance to the more literary book I was reading at the time -- something that I always do. But when I picked up a book I flung it aside almost immediately because it had failed to spark my interest. Then I saw the Warrior anthology and decided to give it a whirl. I loved Julia Templeton's Kieran the Black! This time-travel novella is about a thirty-nine-year-old divorcee's journey from the present time to the year 1067. The history enthusiast had no idea what to expect when a strange woman asked her to hold Kieran the Black's sword, but she hadn't anticipated waking up in Lady Elizabeth's eighteen-year-old body! Not only is she alive during a time period that had always fascinated her, but she is young and beautiful again and is the wife of the gorgeous warrior Kieran the Black. She will enjoy the company of the insatiable man and try to change the course of history by saving him from getting murdered by the leader of Saxon. There are various delectable scenes and twists throughout the novella.

The one thing I did not like about Kieran the Black was Lizzie's reaction to waking up in another time. The whole "I woke up in 1067 in the body of a young, beautiful, and thin woman -- cool!" thing is too unrealistic for words, no matter how much she likes history and how unhappy she had been in her previous life. There should have been a little culture and time period shock at least! Other than that, I loved the story of Lizzie and Kieran and the sex scenes were wonderfully erotic. Kieran sounded delicious! The Warrior book comes with two novellas, and the other one is God of Fire by Jaid Black. The moment I read the opening sentence of the aforementioned novella I knew I wouldn't get into it. I gave up on it after reading the first chapter. That is all I will say about the novella, for it wouldn't be fair to review a story I hadn't read. Alas, this is the first Jaid Black story that didn't grab me and that surprised me. Anyway, I recommend Warrior, if only for Julia Templeton's juicy novella. It certainly put an end to my reading rut, at least for now!

Kieran the black&God of fire both timetravels&fantastic. Very hot, very enjoyable reads. 2 modern-day women are sent back in time to medievil Britain&the Viking era.

Keiran the black is just perfect, hot, sizzling&tenderness.

Jaid black's story God of fire is very typical of her works that I have read so far with the exception of "The possession". I am reading the Trek Mi Quan series at the moment.

I look forward to reading more of Julia Templeton's books in future.

God of Fire By Jaid Black He came to her in a dream. He foretold to her of a husband. She would travel over a thousand years back through time to be claimed by a notorious Viking warrior. The warrior would give her pleasure she'd never dreamed possible. He would claim her. Brand her. Possess her. She could never leave him... But then again, whoever said she wanted to? Kieran the Black By Julia Templeton If you hold his sword in your hands and place the point of the blade in Kieran's crest, you will experience life like you have never known it. When the frizzy-headed crone took thirty-nine-year-old Lizzie Johnston's hands and wrapped them around the sword, she felt a little weird. That's nothing compared to what she feels when she wakes up in the body of eighteen-year-old Saxon, Lady Elizabeth of Aedelmaer in the year 1067, wedded to the infamous Norman knight, Kieran the Black. Kieran's six and a half feet tall, black-haired, with the bluest eyes Lizzie's ever seen and built like a brick you-know-what. Lizzie's head over heels and determined to get tall, dark and dangerous into bed and win his heart, despite the old Elizabeth's avowed distaste for him. But first she has to save his life…

(Steamy and then Some)

(The old west meets a modern day women !)

(My first Kimberly Raye book - how hilarious it was!)

(Intense Romnce)

(Show And Tell-Laney and Dallas)
For those of you who don't like explicit sex scenes, this book is not for you. I say no holds barred is the way to go and I loved this book and have become an avid Blaze reader. The first of the three short stories, Mystery Lover, is my favorite. B.J. and Jonas are the happily ever after kind of romance that melts your heart. The idea that someone could have a steamy affair with one of their closest friends without the man knowing the identity of the woman seems far fetched, but Vicki Lewis Thompson managed to make it beleivable. She's one of my favorite autors and although she's mostly known for her "Nerd" series, this short story shoundn't be overlooked. I've also read the follow up to this story "Notorious" and wasn't disappointed. The other two stories in this book were aslo enjoyable but Jonas and B.J. will forever hold a special place in my heart. They couldn't have picked a better author to kick off this naughty new series. Blaze is the the best!
This book tells a story of two witches back 1882 and a modern day women who makes her living around other's sexually fantasies. Most of the book takes place in the old west with a hot-steaming cowboy and modern-day Elizabeth with a twist of time-travel. You will enjoy this fun read - take a chance I was hooked. I am off to find more books by this author.
I really got a big kick out of this book. The characters were so
easy to love. I thought her refering to the bad guys (until she
learns their names at the end of the book) was darling - Slim,
Medium,&Brawny. I liked how she was a woman who went after what
she wanted, she didn't just sit back&wait for him to come to her.
Being mistaken for Sinful Sinclair definitely had its advantages!
I was kind of surprised, though, that at the end of the book, Sinful's sister just basically threw her hands up in the air&said, oh well! Guess my sister is stuck somewhere else. At least it appears she is happy. I loved the relationship between
the main characters. They were perfect for each other, even if
she wasn't so sure for most of the book (typical heroine).

This is the kid of romace novel that is not for the timid. I enjoy the love scenes in this novella. A prequel to the Blaze series. I like the first one, Mystery Lover. But the third one, Show and Tell, really stood out. Especially the part when the main female character,Laney, is masturbating right in front of Dallas. Defintely intense!
i read show and tell by kimberly raye.

favorite scene with laney-
when she lets that girl work for her dad. she was turning her away because of how she dressed, and suddenly realized she can't judge someone by their dress.

favorite scene with dallas-
finally stands up for himself about the tiles. i hope that guy divorces his wife. :)

favorite scene with laney and dallas together-
in the dark auditorium when he asks her to show him. that was hot. i was afraid someone would walk in. damn punch. :)

order of favorite of the whole anthology:

(Gothic Dragon)
Esther Conway's not too thrilled with her life. She's engaged to Kevin, who doesn't make her toes curl the way she thinks he should. What she does enjoy is her writing. During a weekend jaunt, she visits a private library where she finds a copy of the "The Prince of Costanzo," a novel written long ago by her ancestor, Margaret Marsden, a gothic romantic novelist who disappeared more than a hundred years before.

Esther is desperate to read the book, which is very hard to find. But when she sits down, she finds herself transported to Costanzo. Thinking it's a vivid dream, she's fascinated to find the characters she's heard so much about, including the dreaded sorcerer Prince Drago, the villain. Esther's dreams are so realistic she soon realizes that it's because every time she touches the book she's pulled back, and Drago is not the villain Margaret portrays him to be.

Gothic Dragon sucked me in much as "The Prince of Costanzo" sucked Esther in. This book is a fascinating mix of time travel and fantasy romance, reading much like the gothic novels of my youth. I fell in love with the characters, especially Drago, a perfect blend of sensuous male and dominant ruler. He made my toes curl, much as he did Esther's.

When I was done, I knew this was one I would want to put on my keeper shelf and revisit. If you like gothic romance, with a mix of fantasy and time travel, Gothic Dragon is the book for you.

Reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

Sometimes you can make your dreams a reality. Stuck in an uninteresting job and settled in a safe but vaguely unsatisfying relationship, the only bright spot in Esther's life is her writing. She's fascinated by colorful life of her ancestor Margaret Marsden, a nineteenth-century Gothic romance novelist. A woman who mysteriously disappeared without a trace. A weekend away turns into a hunt for clues when Esther stumbles across Margaret's "lost" novel, The Prince of Costanzo. Though desperate to read it, every time Esther opens the book, she falls asleep-and headlong into amazingly vivid dreams about Costanzo. But in this dream world where war, magic and poisoning are commonplace, nothing is as it seems. Least of all the supposed villain of the novel, the enigmatic sorcerer Prince Drago. She finds herself kidnapped to his castle and subjected to a seductive interrogation that curls her toes. As their feelings for each other grow more powerful, she begins to wonder.is he the real villain, or a hero who only wants to save his kingdom? All she knows is that now that she's had a taste of Costanzo-and Drago-her real life troubles seem insignificant. Until they come crashing around her, threatening to cut her off from the man she loves. Forever. Warning: As well as explicit and delicious sex, this book contains the secret of ultimate escapism which could be highly dangerous in the wrong hands. The reader experiments at her/his own risk.

(BIZARRE)

(Lovely Even with a Limp!)

(Frustrating and Disappointing)

(Frustrating&disappointing)

(This is one of the best damn books I have every read. It is a personal favorite, and it sits in a place of honor.)
The plot had an interesting twist to it (the heroine is transmigrated into another time and into another body) so it had me anticipating something original in romance , but in vain. Elaine is a 39 year old woman from our own century married to a 'man'(?)called Michaeal who has not french kissed his wife or given her sexual fulfillment in the ten years or so that they have been married! By the way, Elaine does not appear to have had any other relationship prior to her marriage, either!
Now that's a bad start and I cannot take the story seriously. Even a woman with a taliban upbringing would not have remained in such a meaningless relationship, since Elaine's husband has neglected her in every other way as well. I should also mention that she is overweight and unexceptional, factors which greatly contribute to her inferiority complex. This is probably a factor as to why she choses to live an insipid colourless life beside this dull man. By this stage I have lost total respect for this woman who believes that other attributes cannot make up for her lack of good looks ,so I plod on.

She wakes up in the body of Morrigan a twenty year old woman married to Charles Mortimer sometime in the late 19th century. She retains her identity but fears speaking out her thoughts as her manner of speech will reveal that she is someone else. Consequntly, she remains mute and communicates her feelings and wishes by glowering, scowling and glaring. She also writes notes. I found this most frustrating as it stretches to more than half way through the book.

Have I mentioned that Charles is a devastatingly handsome, rich and considerate male who has run out of patience with his wife's reticence to consumate the marriage after a year? The real Morrigan was a young woman who shunned her congugal obligations, immersing herself in the reading of the gospel and copying out extracts of it. She reminded me of the female version of Joseph in "Wuthering Heights". She is also brooding, slovenly and secretive. It's understandable therefore that a year after his marriage Charles forces his wife to share his bed but the writer never explains why he chose to marry such an obnoxious female who has not washed in a year because it is 'sinful', in the first place. Elaine turned Morrigan is enraged with her husband Charles, who is completely unaware of what has occurred and tries to keep him at bay.She finds his demands and attentions overbearing , but Charles is beginning to question his sanity and I the reason why I persist in reading it. In fact the man is utterly frustrated and simply wants to salvage what he can of his marriage Elaine on the other hands experiences feelings of remorse as does not wish to be unfaithful to her amoeba like husband of the twentieth century, despite being strongly attracted to nineteenth century Charles. This woman is certifiable in my opinion, as Charles is the epitome of every woman's fantasy. Bear in mind that despite her thirty nine years she has not felt sexual gratification. So when she finally decides to open her mouth to speak and allow the intimacy to grow, she is far from convincing.

This story could have been engaging if the heroine acted more realistically. Then there was a lot of Druid magic which I found too far fetched. Most of the charecters were either flat or charicatures. The only person I found likeable was Charles yet his choice of a wife left room for doubt as to his good sense and judgement.

I love Robin Schone's writing style. Not overly contrived and flowery, and not flat and boring--just right!. She strongly describes her characters mentally which in-turn, in my opinion, gives the reader the power to improvise in other areas where light description is used, which we are fully capable of doing.

I liked Elaine filling in as Morrigan, still a bit stuffy even though she is from our era, contemporary, she still has 20th century hang ups---doesn't have a model figure is shy about being naked, some things never change whatever century you come from I would expect. Also not everyone is having flagrant oral sex--she is a bit taken aback when Charles makes the move. She is savvy enough to be conservative at first with her speech, she is morally not ready to commit adultery (more of the mind than the body!. I would have been colossally disappointed if she had come in and blown everyone away with her 20th century values and brain, she would have been on the next carriage to Bedlam.

Charles, fantastic guy, pretty much everything a hero should be. Many times the men characters get the standard big tough guy, strong mentally and physically,( yes this is important, no short fat guys that definitely would not sell). I thought perhaps towards the end we didn't see enough of Charles' full emotional process with this wifely insanity aspect. We get a pretty good indication with Charles and I loved the fleshing out of his character, I could have heard more and more. I felt that we got a little short-changed on his full thought process when we got to the insanity business. I wanted to delve into his mind, him putting 2 and 2 together or his suffering as he went over and over things in his mind. He was definitely an emotional and thinking individual (Pam Rosenthal's `Almost a Gentleman has a good solid character something like this--love that guy also!) and that is what made him so strong. I happen to think that the scene outside the stables where Charles tells Elaine/Morrigan to dress warmly for dinner because it's going to be a chill night(he's pissed)--then he pivots walks away whistling is the best. It was so thunderclap clear in my brain when I read it that I had to read it over.
I will definitely buy more from this author, she has a captivating writing style as well as intelligent and carefully considered content.

This is the 2nd time travel romance I've read in a week and both have the same problem. Both completely miss the endless, creative opportunities the premise of time travel provides them. In both, the heroines are passive weak nitwits with no skills, common sense, active input into their own lives, or knowledge of history. Really frustrating!!!!

In this book, Elaine, a 39 year old data analyst is married to a very nice, boring, passionless husband who loves her but is terribly dull in bed. Luckily, Elaine is transported back in time within the first few pages of the book to 1883 and into the body of Morrigan, a beautiful 19 year old who has just been deflowered by her sex starved, English Baron husband, Charles. He finally has put his foot down after letting her remain a "virgin" for the first year of their marriage hoping she'd eventually become willing, which she never does. Morrigan is cold and has secrets of her own. But don't get too excited about the premise. My frustration started almost immediately upon Elaine going back in time. Elaine first thinks she's dreaming, then figuring out what has happened, decides not to talk because she fears her Yankee accent (coming out of Morrigan's mouth) will make people suspicious and they'll throw her in an insane asylum. (Please! Lame!) So for the first half of the book, Elaine doesn't talk claiming a "putrid throat". She also meekly takes all sorts of abuse from Hattie, her scottish Servant (or whatever Hattie is) whose nonstop ranting verbal abuse quickly becomes excrutiatingly tiresome , especially since Elaine does absolutely nothing to stop her SERVANT from abusing her. Again, this is compounded by her refusal to speak or exert her own will. Why??? You'd hope as a woman from the 21st Century she'd be smart and resourceful and have knowledge that would put her at a distinct advantage, or at the very least, be entertaining. Yet this is never really explored. In fact the fact that she's from the future is barely part of the book at all. No mention of history to come or even a reference to pop culture or technology in the future. Worse, Elaine acts more like she's from the 11th century rather than the 21st. She seeming has a total inability to exert her mind or will...if she even has a will of her own. It was so insanely frustrating to read! Also at age 39, having been married for numerous years, (before going back in time) she is incredibly sexually niave and acts like a dumb virgin. Give me a break. Her 1883 husband teaches her all about sex and the kama sutra, like she's never heard of it or oral sex before, etc. It's stupid.

To top it off, the "rules of the world" are never really defined. How did Elaine get into Morrigan's body? And how is Morrigan able to all of sudden start jumping into different bodies? Elaine is going along having great explicit sex with her 1883 hubby, Charles, when suddenly Morrigan starts leaving Elaine troublesome notes in her bedroom. Through the notes she describes how she was transported into Elaine's body in the future, was committed to an insane asylum by Elaine's 21st Century hubby for being so different, and then died. But somehow Morrigan comes back to 1883 and inhabits another body and is watching Elaine...the big mystery is whose? Elaine has to find out. Regardless, it's clear Morrigan's bad and wants to destroy Elaine. Elaine, of course, can't figure out how to do anything let alone how to transport herself anywhere, and to be honest, the author wasn't explaining it either. By this point, I was maybe 3 chapters from the end but I got fed up and stopped reading. I'm actually mad I bought the book.

It sits in a place of honor next to Lora Leigh's Forbidden Pleasure. I re-read it evey few months, when I am dying for an intelligently written, well crafted story with lots of hot, tanilyzing erotic immaging.
I loved Diana Galdbon's Outlander Series, have read it through Snow and Ashes, three times, but for a stand alone book I would have to rank Robin Schone's Awaken My Love, way ahead just on origionality alone. I really loved it, it has a quality that is difficult to put into words but I think about it when I read other books and wish they had it too.

Robin Schone's debut romance was an immediate sensation and a perfect introduction to her groundbreaking style. In this new edition of her classic tale, unavailable until now, she offers her trademark blend of suspense and passion...with a surprising twist.

Fantasy Made Flesh

When thirty-nine-year-old Elaine Metcliffe awakens one morning, she is astounded to find herself in a strange bed, in another century--inhabiting the body of another woman. In this, her "new" life, she is married to English baron Charles Mortimer--dark, breathtakingly handsome--and bent not only on seducing the resentful young woman he believes her to be, but educating her in practices of physical pleasure Elaine has never dared to imagine. Torn between fidelity to the passionless husband she left behind and the exquisite temptation Charles offers with every touch, Elaine will discover that the dark magic responsible for her transport to this time and place is no match for the carnal delights that make her want to stay...

(Riley's journey)

(Great Read)

(Great Read!)

(What a great story!)

(Fascinating.....)
A delight.... I read this in 2 days. I love this fantasy genre, and this was right on target. the fact that the Neanderthals were the "good guys" and the Cro Magnan, "not" made it a little unexpected. A good read for all ages.
Another great read by P. L. Parker. Adventure combined with romance certainly seems to be this author's forte. I look forward to the next book.
"Riley's Journey" by P. L. Parker is an absolutely wonderful read, and I might lose my guy card for saying so. Riley journeys back in time to the Ice Age, finds Nathan and begins a series of adventures that kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the story. It is exciting, funny, heartwarming and, at times, intense. Ms. Parker's ability to create in the written text a mental image that is so vivid, you feel like you are experiencing it with the characters. I give this book my highest rating.
I just finished reading this book and, wow, did I love it. The story was intriguing and kept me glued to my seat. I hated to reach the final pages! The author has a wonderful storytelling style and I thoroughly enjoyed how she portrayed the characters' thoughts and actions. I also loved how the plot took its own twists and turns, ones that were definitely not predictable. This is an entertaining book with a great love story and I highly recommend it. I can't wait to read her first book, Fiona.
What if you could travel back 40,000 years ago to when saber toothed tigers and Mastodons roamed the earth? This is exactly the world that Nathan has been surviving in for five lonely years with only his dog, Demon, for companionship. Dr. Bethany Collins, the mastermind behind the experiment that sent Nathan catapulting back in time, is determined that Nathan will not remain alone; so determined that she is willing to send the unsuspecting Riley Ames back in time under the guise of a fake research experiment. Riley's arrival to an age when Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal men walked the earth is only the beginning of RILEY' S JOURNEY....

I have never read a time travel in which the setting was so far back in time, and so it was with great excitement that I started RILEY'S JOURNEY. P.L. Parker did not disappoint! Her vivid images of a time long past made the pages come alive with the excitement, the thrill, and yes, the danger of modern man (and woman!) trying to survive in such a perilous time. More than once P.L. Parker had me on the edge of my seat, anxiously awaiting to see how further events would unfold. Would Riley and Nathan survive each new hazard? And just as importantly, would Demon survive?

The harsh beauty of the past as seen through the eyes of Riley and Nathan is only part of the joy of RILEY'S JOURNEY, however. P.L. Parker throws in some interesting twists that made this romance a truly heart warming tale. The love between Riley and Nathan has time to develop and blossom into a strong, unbreakable bond that is both sexy and uplifting. RILEY'S JOURNEY is truly a tale about love growing in any environment!

COURTESY OF CK2S KWIPS AND KRITIQUES

The research project was only supposed to be for an "extended period." No one said anything about forever! So Riley's journey begins. Unknowingly sent back 40,000 years to be the mate of a man she had never before met, Riley struggles to understand and adjust. Her journey will take her into a world fraught with dangers - a world made more treacherous by savage beasts, primitive Neanderthals, and the incursion of the aggressive Cro-Magnon man. Surviving alone for five years in this vast wilderness, Nathan, along with his enormous dog, Demon, carve out a life in the perilous environment. Though thrown together by forces beyond their control, love grows between Riley and Nathan - but will they survive?

(Good Premise/Un-engaging story-telling)

(Great premise for a book, but...)

(Great Concept, A Little Slow Paced)

(more sitcom than scifi)

(Excellent debut novel)
While the premise of this novel sounds like an interesting new take on the time travel, I put it down after about a 100 hundred pages. I found the writing and story-telling to be a bit run-of-the mill, and there didn't seem to be a lot of suspense or sense of curiosity sparked. The premise of the series sounds interesting enough that in a way I wish I get through it and see if it gets better, but I guess when it comes to sci-fi/fantasy I feel if a writer can't get the reader interested early on, I don't have a lot of faith that I'll care a lot about the middle or ending.

This may be a sci-fi/time travel disguised as a commentary of historic events, which is fine, but in my mind in the tradition of great fiction you can have underlying commentary, as well as great story. I would also barely classify this book as sci-fi (though that is how the publisher has labeled it).

Baker is very readable, but her characters are not fleshed out, so I did not feel any empathy towards the characters' fates. Despite this, the story was fun to read, and I will no doubt read the sequel at some point.
Great concept, entertaining read, decent characters - but moved quiet slow. Almost more of a romance novel than a time-travel SF novel. The characters are almost *too* powerful with their gadgets and physical upgrades. I guess at the end of the day, I would say it was a flat and bit depressing read.
The time travel and life extension premise is great, but she doesn't do much with it. The rest of the book is full of sarcastic and irritating characters who really are not likeable that reads like a television sitcom. Once I realized I wasn't going to get a satisfying sci-fi experience and lowered my expectations to rock bottom, it was readable in a tawdry way. I might try another one though as the second novel is purportedly much better.
To start, this is the first book of a series. Like any series, you will not get the whole story in the first book. The first chapter introduces you to the world of the series, and Mendoza drops dark hints that the Company is not as altruistic as it seems to be. She does not return to this theme again. Rather, that theme is explored in other books in the series. What this book is about is Mendoza's first, disastrous assignment. It is a character story more than a plot-driven story. At its heart, it is both a love story, and a cautionary tale of fanatical religious devotion, set appropriately against the fanatically devout reign of Bloody Mary. Most of the book is extremely well-written.

The beginning chapters detail the Company and Mendoza's recruitment. She gets rescued from the dungeons of the Spanish Inquisition and goes through the immortality process. This part of the book is utterly riveting. She goes on her first assignment and meets her new teammates. Things start to slow down a bit, but it's still very well-written and is full of gorgeous details. Her team arrives at the Garden of Iden, where her job is to catalogue all of the plants there, because in the future many of these plants will be extinct. She also meets The Guy.

And things come to a screeching halt. This is where I knocked my review down a star, because for the next hundred to two hundred pages, there is a lot of crawling around among the plants, and a lot of witty exchanges and lovey-dovey scenes between Mendoza and The Guy, and the occasional dropped hint that all of this will end in sorrow, but most of the bigger, interesting incidents that happen in this section seem to be filler, with very few serving to advance the plot. Baker's problem is that she sets up Mendoza as needing to study the plants for a full year in order for future scientists to accurately recreate them. That is a very long time frame to have to fill, and only rarely does Baker say anything like, "What with one thing and another, time passed."

Towards the end, things pick up again. The ending left me with a lot of questions about the Company that I wanted answered. Hopefully, Baker will answer them in further books in the series.

This is the first novel in what has become one of the most popular series in contemporary SF, now back in print from Tor. In the 24th century, the Company preserves works of art and extinct forms of life (for profit of course). It recruits orphans from the past, renders them all but immortal, and trains them to serve the Company, Dr. Zeus. One of these is Mendoza the botanist. She is sent to Elizabethan England to collect samples from the garden of Sir Walter Iden.
But while there, she meets Nicholas Harpole, with whom she falls in love. And that love sounds great bells of change that will echo down the centuries, and through the succeeding novels of The Company.

In 16th-century Spain, everybody expects the Spanish Inquisition, as they have a well-known tendency to cart people off to their dungeons on trumped-up charges. What 5-year-old Mendoza, on the brink of being tortured as a Jew, is totally unprepared for is to be rescued by the Company--the ultimate bureaucracy of the 24th century--and made immortal. In return, all she has to do is travel through time on a series of assignments for the Company and collect endangered botanical specimens. The wisecracking, mildly misanthropic Mendoza wants nothing to do with historical humans, but her first assignment is to travel to England in 1553--uncomfortably close to those damn Inquisitors--with Joseph and Nefer, two other Company operatives. Their intent is to gather herb samples from the garden of Sir Walter Iden, a foolish though generous country squire. (Kage Baker knows her Shakespeare: Sir Walter is the descendant of Alexander Iden, loyal subject of Henry IV, who slew the hungry rebel Jack Cade in that very garden in Kent.)

The cyborg trio poses as Doctor Ruy Lopez, his daughter Rosa (the irrepressible Mendoza, now grown), and her duenna, Doña Marguerita; Sir Walter's hospitality and discretion are bought for the promise of restored youth. (There are hilarious moments that call to mind the Coneheads, who claimed to be from France when caught doing anything peculiar.) Sir Walter's secretary, Nicholas Harpole, is immediately suspicious of and hostile towards the strange "Spanish" visitors, which prompts Mendoza to fall in love with him. Nicholas has his own badly kept secret: he's proudly Protestant at a time when Queen Mary and Philip of Spain are on a Catholicizing rampage. Mendoza knows Nicholas is probably doomed, andthat as a Company operative she cannot meddle with his fate, but love makes people do desperate things. Baker surpasses even Connie Willis in humor and precision of period detail in this fresh, ingenious first novel.--Barrie Trinkle

(Timeless Deception)

(A very different and original time travel)

(A very different and original time travel)

(I wish it ended better)
Alaina Sawyer's life is turned upside down by disturbing visions. Not only does she see people who aren't really there, she's seeing a woman who looks just like her, but dressed in late eighteenth-century clothing!

Back in the late eighteenth-century, Lady Alicia plots to leave her husband, Richard, Lord Saybrooke. Cuckolded many times over, he despairs of reconciliation or of any more heirs. After the birth of their son, Lady Alicia has refused any overture from her husband and has taken her pleasures elsewhere. Her plan is to leave Lord Saybrooke for good, and the mystic, Madam Reena, has just the ticket--Lady Alicia is to switch places with someone who looks just like her. The only trouble is, this other person lives 200 years in the future.

Madam Reena makes good on her promise and the adventures begin. Alaina tries to step into Lady Alicia's rather sordid shoes and reputation. All the while, she is trying not to let on that she isn't really Lady Alicia, and that the reputation assuredly doesn't fit.

Timeless Deceptions has an interesting premise, and the way the time travel is introduced is fresh and innovative. However, I found the story a slow read. The characters seemed interesting but rather bland and the interaction between them was stilted until near the end of the book. While the story in itself is interesting and well thought out, I expected more romance and action between the main characters. I look forward to seeing other works from this author, but this one just didn't have that special "spark" that I look for in time-travel romances.

TIMELESS DECEPTION is a very different and original time travel than any I've seen before. It's a creative endeavor that is a wonderful keeper. I love time travels and Regencies, and this book is a perfect blend of both genres. I drooled (!) over Richard, and I enjoyed rooting for Alaina as she tried to convince Richard that she was a "changed" person. I highly recommend this terrific example of Brit-lit: TIMELESS DECEPTION!

I was captured from the very first page...Alaina Sawyer is from modern New York city and quite educated but the book doesn't go into too much detail of her life there as things happen quickly. She begins having visions of another time (1816) and another woman who looks very much like her and is named Alicia. This, Alicia, hates her life as the wife of the handsome Earl of Saybrooke.. in fact, she hates him and her son and everyone knows it. To escape, Alicia pays a witch to help her escape by trading places with another. This person, of course, is Alaina who avoids men for reason we aren't really sure about, yet, on seeing the Earl she goes gaga. Alaina, plays the role of Alicia believing that if she told the Earl who she really was he'd send her to an Asylum or Jail. Well, things progress from there to an end that really did disappoint me. This book wasn't bad it just could have been better. This book was only 200 something pages and could have been embellished more. For example, a little more about Alaina's history and that ending....it left me wanting something...I would have loved the book if it wasn't for that.
Waking up in 1816 as the Countess of Saybrooke, Alaina must convince the man of her dreams that she is cut from an altogether different cloth than his unfaithful wife Alicia.

The Earl of Saybrooke must come to gripes with his wife’s sudden descent into virtue. Is it wishful thinking on his part or is she now his and his alone?

(Best Romance Ever)

(One of my favorite books!)

(Just OK...)

(Glamourous, sensuous historical erotica)

(:0))
I Love this Book. For me, It is one of the very best Romance novels I have read. I recommend it to anyone.
This is definitely one of the best romance books I've read historical or not. It is the story of Lady Diana Davenport who lives in regency England and is totally dismissive of men of her age as fops and fools. But this is all about to change; Diana is transported back in time, where Bath was ruled by Romans! She becomes the prisoner of General Marcus Magnus, a hardened soldier who is certainly not a fop but someone she could fall for if only he wasn't so arrogant and infuriating. But the passion between them is to much for either of them to ignore so we are treated to some very explicit love scenes (this is a Virginia Henley book after all, so it was expected). But the tension and the growth of feelings between them are palpable, not just descriptive and this is what saves the book of being just an erotica. Henley does a wonderful job at describing them as soul mates and the troubles they have to face until they get together(mainly caused by Marcus brother in the past as well as in the future) only add to the incedible suspense and tension.

This is a lovely book, so please do not dismiss it as another erotica. I have read many "proper" romances where the feelings of the heroes and the situation bringing them together are of much less concern than in this book and if you get past the intense love scenes (the story can stand perfectly well without them), you won't be able to let it out of your hands.

This book was so high rated on Amazon I had to read it myself. The story had some very high moments, but some not so great ones as well. I wasn't happy with the way the romance played out, it was very unsatisfying to me. Also, there were too many sex scenes in the book. Yea, one when the characters get together is very satisfying, but the book verged on soft core porn. I also wasn't thrilled by some of the things our Hero did, though he seemed to redeem himself... at times. Allin allthe story was great, but I wasn't thrilled with the results. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from reading this book, there were moments that were great, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
I adore this book. It is my favourite historical romance novel. I totally fell in love with the heroine and the hero. Diana is the epitome of femininity and sensuality and Mark/Marcus is the virile Roman conquerer. If I were a story book character I would want to be Diana who is portrayed as a perfect goddess. Mark/Marcus is a dream lover come to life when you turn the pages of this treasure. I was deeply touched by the way the love unfolded between the two characters, how their mutual contempt turned to passion and lust then into love.
You know i sometimes wonder if people are reading the same book i must admit that some of virginia henley books are a little out there but anyway...

LOVED IT i detest time travel romance and this was a kind of getting my feet wet to it..the concept was good it was almost like a kismet thing.I think the heroine held her own and not too many heroines can say they lost their virginity twice and loved both Marcus/Mark...good story you know historical romance novels it goes with the time and period of how they would act.

its like i always say a bad reivew can really downplay a good book and a good review can really up play a bad book, because of some of the bad reviews for this book I almost didn't read it but i'm glad i change my mind

Where are all the real men?she wondered...

For Lady Diana Davenport, they existed only in her books and dreams. There she could lose herself, becoming the licentious Diana, goddess of the hunt--far from the rigid restraints of eighteenth-century London, where she was courted by fops and fools. That is, until she tried on an authentic Roman helmet in an antiques store and was catapulted back in time, landing in Marcus Magnus's arms. This was no dream! She was lost in Aquae Sulis, the city she knew as Bath, prisoner of a Roman general who accused the violet-eyed beauty of being a Druid spy--and then made her his slave!

"COME TO ME."

His words were soft, imperious, charged with danger and desire. Marcus Magnus was powerful, arrogant, and infuriating. A real man. And now Lady Diana was his slave, hostage to his will, vowing to fight him to the end--with every seductive weapon she possessed....

Virginia Henley is the author of eight romances published by Dell, including the New York Times bestsellersSeducedandDesired.

She divides her time between Ontario, Canada, and St. Petersburg, Florida.

(A Bad Imitation of Gabaldon---sorry folks!)

(Pretty Good Story)

(Romantic and memorable)

(Far-fetched and simplistic, boring at times)

(Really opened my eyes!)
I love all types of Egypt books--good and good-bad. This one was a disappointment. Like the last reviewer, I was turned off by the Judeo-Christian element. This is a book about Egypt after all! Aside from Hatshesut being a bit of a nymphomaniac, the story was predictable, and not nearly enough detail was given in the "rescue" scenes--seemed like all of a sudden Chloe was safe again, and you don't know exactly how she got that way. Read Diana Gabaldon's books---same idea done with way more detail, excitement, and historical interest.
I have read all 4 of these books by Ms. Frank and with this being the first in the series, I thought the story was pretty good but not her best. At times, the novel seems a bit far fetched but all and all a good read if you enjoy historical fiction.
I found this book to be one of the more memorable books I have read. The romance is well written (although some of the historical points could be suspect). I enjoyed this book immensly and would like to see more of this author.
When the lion "Thief" showed up, I lost all respect for the book. Please. It was also a bit strange on the religious front. I was offended somewhat by the author's portrayel of the whole thing, and I'm not even a super religious person.

The writing was childish. No way in heaven is this in the league of Diana Gabaldon. Not even close. The relationship between RaEm and Cheftu is like comparing a match to an inferno with Jamie&Claire.

I was disappointed. And even more disappointed when I picked up the next book only to find "oh look, they've travelled to a new time now"... here we go all over again. Boring, yawn. The character development was not good enough. And the plot was not satisfying to the reader.

I had read other "flung back in time" novels and, while I loved the Gabaldon series, figured with this one I would be just reading fluff. Boy, was I wrong. This book really made the Exodus vivid to me and made the Bible come alive. Getting vicious satisfaction out of crunching on the locusts, dealing with the Nile as blood, and the staffs turning into snakes! I was enthralled right from the start, and bought them for my mother, who loved it as well. I would recommend to anyone.
While visiting her archaeologist sister in Egypt, Dallas artist Chloe Kingsley steps into a forbidden chamber and is whisked back in time to 1452 B.C.E. Caught in a maelstrom of political and personal intrigue, she meets and falls in love with Lord Cheftu, a court magus and physician. Embroiled in a slave revolt led by Moses, Chloe and Cheftu must make an agonizing choice between love and duty--leaving powerful testimony for generations to come.
