(Oh dear...)

(Help for Parents)

(DANGEROUS AND HARFUL)

(Things We Must Not Forget)

(This book is a gift.)
What a shame that people feel the need to impose their harmful opinions on others, and need to buy a book like this one to validate their hatefulness.
As a parent, I found this book to be extremely helpful. Mr. Dallas recognizes that each person will make their own decisions. We can't make decisions for them but we can control how we respond to them.

The most meaningful line in the book for me is this: "You may never agree on this issue, but you are committed to not letting this disagreement ruin your relationship." This focused my attitude on what had to happen so that I could live in peace with my child. Mr. Dallas helped me see how I could continue to show love for my child without comprimising my values.

I really liked the practcal advise in this book. There is a chapter on negotiating family boundries. He has some good suggestions for respecting everyones beliefs and comfort. I do not need to constantly tell my child my views on homosexuality; I have already told her. He also instructs us how to ask children about our fears for their lives as a homosexual person such as AIDS, drugs, and promiscuity. These things may or may not be a part of the person's life. It is ok to ask; your fears may be relieved. The book helped me feel more comfortable with asking questions about my child's life.

The book also talks about the possible causes of homosexuality. Is it genetic or environmental? He takes a more balanced aproach to this than most of the information I have read. He basically says that it is likely a combination of both factors.

I felt quite a bit of relief from reading this book. It is in line with my evangelical Christian belief system, but doesn't demand that I change my child. Mr. Dallas shows compassion for the gay person and his/her family members.

This book is directed toward Chrisians with a literal interpretation of the Bible. If you are not in this catagory you may disagree with the book. If you are in pain, because homosexuality conflicts with your Biblical views, it mahy help.

As a licensed professional counselor, I encourage my clients to not purchase a pre-packaged belief system, but instead engage in a free and responsible search for truth and meaning in their lives. As such, I refrain from passing judgment on the beliefs that others choose and instead celebrate the colorful diversity that is found in the tapestry of human ideology. Nevertheless, when I am confronted with principles that are destructive and harmful to the human spirit, I feel compelled, as a health care professional and as a human being, to speak out against such wickedness.

While one's sexual activities and behavior may vary over the course of a lifetime, one's sexual orientation does not. Requiring that individuals whose sexual orientation is something other than heterosexual "change" or "heal" is no different than Hitler requiring that those with the wrong eye color, the wrong hair color, or the wrong family lineage be exterminated. One does not need to "heal" or be "cured" from something that is not an illness. This book does not simply state an alternative opinion on homosexuality; it causes significant and severe damage to the psyche of those who know, beyond a shadow of a doubt that, even if they can change their activity, they cannot change who they are at their core. Rather than offering the hope and healing it claims to provide, this book inflicts emotional violence on its readers.

Everyone has a right to his or her own beliefs. In the case of this book, the author has chosen to act on his beliefs. Discriminatory acts, based on prejudice, have a damaging effect on the lives of innocent people--they hurt, they demean, they humiliate, they wound, and sometimes they kill. I do not accept the label "religious" to excuse beliefs and actions that are designed to hurt people. Is religion about abusing others? Is that part of the moral game plan--demonize people who are different from you, condemn them and exalt yourself in the name of a religious conviction?

When I walk into the music store with my 13-year-old daughter to buy a CD, I notice that some of the CD's are labeled with "warning" stickers. As a parent, I appreciate this so I can steer my daughter toward purchases that will fill her mind and soul with affirmative messages. This book needs to come with a similar "warning" sticker, for anyone who reads it is going to be a victim of emotional and spiritual abuse by the worst kind of perpetrator...a bigoted wolf in sheep's clothing!

This book made it clear that the performance of homosexual acts is sinful. Those with same-sex attractions carry daily the cross of a disordered condition they did not choose and science still doesn't know the cause of. Homosexuals who takes seriously the requirement to order their lives as best they can to live celibately should never forget that they are guilty of no sin for making these efforts, and are as infinitely loved by God as are all human beings. You do the best you can with the "hand you're dealt" in life, and in the end all will be well, exceedingly well.

The worst we could do to a homosexual family member would be to reject them or love them any less, especially by pushing unproven reparative therapy to change their orientation which is permanent for true homosexuals, regardless if ultimately pronounced heterosexual behavior is clearly exhibited. The psychic damage done in trying to coerce someone to change the unchangeable is cruel, unconscionable, and in no way remotely consistent with Christianity.

Yes, the goal for permanently homosexual Christians, as it is for unmarried heterosexual Christians, is the same as it was for Jesus Christ: celibacy. Not a bad role model.

I have really struggled with my thoughts and feelings about how to respond to a loved one who recently announced they were gay. I spent many hours considering how to engage in a way that was both loving and true to my own, strongly held, Christian beliefs.

This book is a real gift for those of us who hear the words, "I'm gay." Joe Dallas is Biblically centered (I believe), sensitive, and steadfast. I found particularly helpful chapters that speak specifically to moms and dads, brothers and sisters, spouses, and extended families.

The heart–wrenching declaration that a loved one is a homosexual is increasingly being heard in Christian households across America. How can this be? What went wrong?  Is there a cure?

In this straightforward book, Joe Dallas offers practical counsel, step by step, on how to deal with the many conflicts and emotions parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters or any family member will experience when learning of a loved one’s homosexuality.

Drawing from his own experience and from his many years of helping families work through this perplexing and unexpected situation, Joe offers scriptural and compassionate advice to both struggling gays and those who love them.

(serious, if flawed)

(Insightful and Great for Younger Generation to Read)

(Full Circle)

(Ultimately, a frustrating book)

(A True Gay Classic)
"Full Circle" is a serious attempt to write a historic gay novel that covers the last half of the 20th century. In this it reminds me of, but is not as successful as, Felice Picano's "Like People in History." Ford's book reads too much like a timeline, going from major event to major event, with a liberal dose of unnecessary detail along the way. At times it seems like the author is simply lecturing, almost forgetting that these are the words of Ned, his narrator. The book's story, the relationship among three long-time friends, is too slight to carry the weight of the intended epic sweep, and they are moved around like chess pieces to make sure they are present at all the landmark occasions. The trivia that gets thrown in -- the co-librettists of "La Boheme," the man who introduced eucalyptus trees to California, the statistical makeup of Vietnam soldiers -- is a distraction.

That said, the book is still absorbing when it centers on the main characters, whose relationships are well-depicted. Jack and Andy are convincingly drawn, though Ned is little more than a foil for his more colorful friends. At times his behavior isn't exemplary, but the author wants to portray an attitude that was prevalent at the time, so Ned must step up. And while I'm sure that somewhere in America a gay boy dropped out of college to enlist in the Army and fight in Vietnam, as a college student at the time, I find it hard to believe.

(Ford is hardly alone among current writers who no longer make the correct distinction among I/me/myself, but because this is a first-person narrative, the constant errors are an irritant to anyone sensitive to this usage.) "Full Circle" would have been more successful had it been shortened and condensed, as the central story was compelling. It is my first exposure to this author, and I will seek out his other books.

I enjoyed this book and looked forward to getting back to it before bed each night. Each section is full of interesting historic insights that should be a must read for the younger generation, especially those that deal with the reality of AIDS in the 80s and the devestation it bought on the gay community. Other areas of interest were the Harvey Milk assasination and Vietnam. While this book cover's a gay man's coming of age and his life journey the historic fabric is what I found to be of most interest. It is easy to forget the past and I think it is vital for the younger generation to learn the struggles of the brave members of generations past that have made being a Gay American, a better place for all. We still have a long way to go but the last 30 years have bought about sweeping changes. Enjoy the book, it is worth reading.
When a story hits home, then that's the making of great literature. The characters are in their prime of life, learning to cope as they grow olders. Mistakes are made, but can be overcome. Excellent reading.
I really give this ambitous, but (for me) ultimately frustrating book 2 1/2 stars, but I've rounded up. I did enjoy the early sections of the novel, which focused on the youth, college and army experiences of Ned, the main character. But once Ned leaves the army and moves to San Francisco, I grew frustrated with what seemed like an endless series of what I call "and thens." What I mean is that the story just became "and then I did this" "and then I met so and so" "and then I started taking drugs," etc. It seemed like highlights of someone's diary who is overly melodramatic and inevitably falls back on clichés.

There also is a strong tendency for the narrator to get very didactic--giving little history lessons on agent orange or the Golden Gate Bridge. Perhaps understandable as he's a history teacher, but I found it very off putting.

Most annoying of all, though, is the endless references to the pop culture and history of the particular moment. Yes, I get it was the late 70's; do we have to have you snorting coke while listening to Sylvester, thinking about Harvey Milk, watching Star Wars, reading "Tales from the City," having promiscuous sex and hating Anita Bryant?

I see I'm in the minority here, and I can understand why others might enjoy it, but I found "Full Circle" a let down.

I've read Michael Thomas Ford's other books and was entertained and moved by such a talented and wonderful author. Sure, Last Summer and Looking For It could be called beach novels but the author seems to grow and mature with each new novel he publishes. And with Full Circle, I often wonder if this is his masterpiece or just a taste of the wonderful books to come. Upon picking up this beautiful piece of work, I found that I could not put it down! I was truly fascinated by the characters; cared for them. The historical references were remarkable and the plot just moves forward at an even pace that depicts the lives of these gay men through the rich, complicated and convoluted past of gay history. It has been a year since I read this novel but I gave a copy to my best friend last night as a gift and plan to give another copy to another friend in the near future. Michael Thomas Ford has become one of my all time favorite writers and I'm at present reading his most recent novel Changing Tides. Again: another beautiful piece of work!!!!!
In novels such as Last Summer and Looking For It, Michael Thomas Ford has honestly and lovingly explored the intimate details of gay men’s lives, from hot sex and lasting relationships to friendship and the search for family. Now he’s crafted his most extraordinary novel yet, a powerful saga of three friends and lovers whose story spans decades and whose bonds have finally come Full Circle.

History professor Ned Brummel is living happily with his partner of twelve years in small-town Maine when he receives a phone call from his estranged friend—Jack—telling him that another friend—Andy—is very ill and possibly near death. It is news that shatters the peace of his world for many reasons. And as Ned boards a plane to Chicago on his way to his friend’s bedside, he embarks on another journey into memory, examining the major events and small moments that have shaped his world and his relationships with these two very different, very important men.

Growing up together through the restrictive 1950’s and confusing ‘60’s, Jackson "Jack" Grace and Ned Brummel took solace in their love for each other. But once they arrive at college in 1969 and meet handsome farm boy Andy Kowalski, everything changes. Despite Andy’s apparent heterosexuality, both Jack and Ned fall hard for him, strainingtheir close friendship. Soon, the three men will become involved in a series of intense liaisons and bitter betrayals, coming together and flying apart, as they alternately hurt, love, shape, and heal one another over the course of years. From the heady, drug- and sex-fueled days of San Francisco in the wild seventies to the haunting spectre of AIDS in the eighties and the righteous activism of the nineties, their relationship transforms and grows, reflecting the changes going on around them. Now, together again in the most crucial and intimate of settings, Ned, Jack, and Andy have another chance to confront the damage of the past and embrace the bonds of friendship and love that have stood the test of time.

Full Circle is a wonderfully moving chronicle of three friends that is also an unflinching, triumphant celebration of the power of gay friendships, of the deep bonds forged despite strong obstacles, and of the love that is ultimately the most important thing we can ever share.

(I'm not a drippy-black-eyeliner-goth fan girl...)

(These Are Definitly Not Your Typical Vampires)

(No action, no mystery, boring characters)

(A Gothic Grim Tale of Gypsy Vampires, Steve and Ghost.)

(A great book.)
but I still think this very well may be the best vampire book ever written.
I picked this up just recently for a re-read.
The first time I read it (when it came out) I could not put it down, sacrificing sleep to finish it.
Sixteen years later, it took away a whole Saturday.
Strangely, XM radio played a song that I had been listening to while reading it in 1993.
I'm not saying the book has mystical radio tuning powers, but thought it was interesting nonetheless.

Say what you like, but the pacing, the solid feel of the language, the evocative descriptions (without being overly flowery), and the strength of the visceral imagery make this book astounding.
Tired of the toothless vamps of Twilight? Sick of the slick, swooning heroines of paranormal romance novels?
Here's the antidote.

There has been nothing added to the modern vampire canon that can come close to this book.

Lost Souls was my first Poppy Z. Brite novel and is one of my favorite books if not my favorite. I absolutely love Poppy Z. Brite's work, she is so unique and such an amazing writer! Brite really knows how to write without pulling any punches, she isn't afraid to write about the dirty details. This novel is about vampire and I've always loved vampires but for me the best part of this book was Ghost. Ghost is really what made this book for me, there was just something about him that really drew me in even though he is one of the only non-vampire characters. This book is incredible, there aren't many writers today of Poppy Z. Brite's caliber.
This book is certainly dark, which is usually a good thing, but it did nothing for this book at all. There's a boy named Nothing that has sex with any and all of his friends and does drugs. Also, an abuser character that beats up his woman, a psychic boring character named Ghost, and 3 vampires that aren't very interesting. People do drugs, kill each other, kill their best friends, sleep with their fathers, some people get pregnant, some run away from home...yawn. If this book is supposed to be interesting because it's dark and shocking, I say that isn't enough, there still has to be an entertaining plot. I didn't care who killed who in this book, the characters were all so unlikable and one dimensional. I couldn't finish it. I like dark fantasy and horror, but only if there is a plot. I'm not interested in reading about people's screwed up lives, even if their are vampires involved.

The Vampires in Lost Souls are like none you have ever encountered anywhere else, in any other written form. Zillah and his clan live like wandering gypsy vampires on a quest to do nothing but party, have sex and kill. They're like a dangerous rock band made up of murderers and thieves.

A kid named Nothing comes in to the picture, and also later on in the novel, in a big way. He has a crappy home life. His parents don't understand his strange ways, which are to basically live in his own world, read rebellious books, and wear dark clothes. He takes off and winds up a kid on the hard roads, but eventually meets and then hangs out with Zillah and his gang of marauding bloodsuckers.

The two most memorable character in this book are, Steve and Ghost. They're the guys you would have hung out with in school, a little wild, but not enough that they're inhuman, absent of a soul.

Steve and Ghost are like brothers, and in the course of the book they befriend Nothing, and seeing that the kid is on the path to certain death with Zillah and his pals, try to step in and save the kid from the pack of vicious vampires out on the road.

Poppy Z. Brite makes sure to give you and intense ending, and you'll find her prose is creepy and elegant, and that it will take your mind to other worlds, other dark roads shadowed with fears and evils more real than you've read.

Lost Souls should be required reading for anyone who likes dark, surreal, intense horror, well written, that reads smooth as silk.

And after you get this one in the mail, don't throw it on the pile of books to be read later, get right to it and experience the magic of a well-crafted story.

LOST SOULS was Poppy Z. Brite's first novel.

Sixteen years later, it is STILL a powerhouse novel.

Beginning during Mardi Gras in New Orleans, we are introduced to a few vampires. Christian is our main focus at this time, along with a young girl named Jesse. It isn't long after Jesse wants to `give herself' to a vampire that she is impregnated by another, which is as much of a death sentence as loving one. When a baby is born to one of the other vampires, Christian departs and leaves little `Nothing' on the doorstep of a human family, where he hopes the child will have a normal life.

Fast forward, about fifteen years later. Nothing is a teenager now, obsessed with the darkness of certain music and the taste of alcohol and cigarettes. He's like most angst teenagers; obsessed with find SOME sort of way out of his life. He's always known that he wasn't his parents' child, because some deep part of him just KNOWS that. It isn't until he finds a note that says `His name is Nothing' that he decides to run away, toward where his heart is calling him. His heart is calling him to Missing Mile, a place where two young musicians live and play their dark stories.

In Missing Mile, we meet Ghost and Steve, who created the band Lost Souls? With the two of them trying to launch their music career in bigger and better ways, they play at a local club called the Sacred Yew until they find something better to do.

But one particular night, Ghost has a vision, a vision of two decrepit twins, calling to him from whatever world they exist in. They warn of the darkness that is heading to his life.

It isn't long after that the vampires come to Missing Mile.

And behind them is Nothing, who yearns to be with more of `his' kind.

Poppy Z. Brite's style of storytelling is nothing short of amazing. Her style isn't like most writer's. While we normally see books through some kind of prism that lets us know we're just in a book, her writing engulfs us and draws us into her dark world. As we follow Steve, Ghost's and Nothing's journeys, we're drawn into the dark side of life (and unlife, since vampires aren't really of the living world.)

This is another Poppy Z. Brite book that I'll forever cherish. If I were suggesting someone to read Brite, I'd tell them to try LOST SOULS first. It'll set up DRAWING BLOOD, her next book, much, much better. I've found that people either love or hate her work, but thankfully, I'm of the variety that loves her writing and will continue to read whatever she puts out.

Five stars for LOST SOULS.

In the French Quarter of New Orleans the Mardi Gras celebrations conceal a different group of pleasure-seekers. For Zillah, Molochai and Twig, the party has been going on for centuries, fuelled by sexual frenzy, green Chartreuse and innocent blood. Born in horror and brought up in suburban Maryland, Nothing has always suspected he's different from other teenagers - and when he has his first taste of human blood, he knows he is right. Ghost is the singer of the band Lost Souls. When Nothing is drawn into Zillah's fatal circle, Ghost has to decide whether to save the boy - or abandon him to his bloody birthright. "Lost Souls" is a dark, decadent and delicious work of fantasy from the mistress of modern horror.

(WHAT....DID....YOU....SEE?! ("USAGI"))

(Don't buy this with your own money!)

(More Like Negative Six!)
The story in this volume actually revolves around two couples. The first and main couple in the series are Usagi, a rich and eccentric famous novelist, and Misaki, a high school student about to apply to university. Usagi, is basically a close friend of Misaki's older brother and the story begins with Usagi tutoring Misaki. It turns out that Usagi has always had hidden feelings for Misaki's brother and the story in this volume is about how he eventually resolves these feelings. This volume is also about the relationship that develops between Usagi and Misaki.

Although this may sound very angsty and serious, let me just say that overall, this series is a very fun, entertaining read. Usagi's eccentricities are really hilarious and in general, the tone is pretty light hearted, especially in the following volumes. Both characters are well developed and likeable, especially the straightforward, honest, Misaki, who we are following.

The other story revolves around Hiro and Nowaki. Hiro, a university student, is basically an old friend of Usagi's and the story begins when he is trying to let go of the unrequited feelings he has had for Usagi for years. The story here is about when he meets Nowaki and the relationship that develops between them. Again, the tone is pretty light hearted. Both characters are really likeable and sweet, both Nowaki, who is sincere and straightforward, and especially Hiro, who is kind hearted but finds it hard to express what he feels. I completely love Hiro and Nowaki's story, something about it is just very sweet and moving. Their story continues in the next volumes along with Usagi and Misaki's.

The artwork is slightly unconventional but as far as I'm concerned is still lovely. I got used to the style quite quickly and think the characters are very pretty. Although there isn't anything completely explicit, there are a number of very hot scenes in both storylines. In general, this series is a really hot read.

Overall, this manga is just completely solid and engaging. After reading the next volumes I've found myself completely in love with and addicted to this series. There's just something very sweet, moving and entertaining about it. I definitely recommend it!

This was featured in one of my other mangas by the Blu publishing company at the back with the advertisements. It had a cute premise so I decided to buy it. I highly recommend it! It was cute, funny, racy and very sexy. Most boy love stories are cute but mostly tame. This is pretty explicit and was very delightful for that fact. I think you'll enjoy it. ^_^
JUNJO ROMANTICA Volume 1: (Yaoi) (Junjo Romantica)

I found the story to be one that I can never really put down, every time I get a new volume I start at the beginning and work my way through them all over again...I consider it one of the best series I own. Both of the romances have a sad flare to them that brings both character conflict and a little understanding into the way they act now. Both stories come together sometimes and bring a sense of what a sad love teaches us for the next great love. I look forward to reading and collecting these until the very end. And just as it seems that nothing else can happen the sh** hits the fan and I love to see what they do. The characters grow and grow on you and you want to see the resolution of mind and body....LOL, plus who would have thought the two Usami brothers would love the same person, being that they are so different...waiting for the six volume, while reading the old ones looking for clues....AND a shout out to the author: "I enjoy your work and it brings both laughter and sadness(waiting for the next volume) to my day, week, or month! And with three jobs and school, I need that... ~_~" Emiri

While I did buy this with my own money I wish I hadn't. In this volume there are two couples we get the "honor" of reading about. The first, a D average student and his tutor a sexy boys love novelist and the second a lanuage student at an university and a smart orphan student in need of tutoring (seeing a pattern?). Any hoo, the first couple is a bore, with the novelist randomly molesting the not adorable student. If you are familar with yaoi then you would know that in some stories this type of action/scenes work. So I am assuming the manga-ka of this just assumed it would work for her story as well. It doesn't. They are thrown in and meant to be seen as some sort of comical relief. While the D average student is complaining about the "Perverted" novelist we soon see him getting upset that the novelist is really just using him as a substitute for who he really loves. Huh? What? Yeah they are a stupid couple with no flow, solid plot, or romance.
With that said, the second couple, the language student and orphan, are actually quite cute and fun to read. If you can force yourself through the snooze fest of the first couple then this second one is worth reading. While there are some scenes that are a bit odd (the orphan shows up at the others house and makes breakfast though the language student clearly doesn't want him there) it all pans out because this couple moves a bit slower and the intentions of both are clearly shown to the reader. If the manga was just this second couple then it would be worth the money, however, since it's not, really don't bother. Unless you just like reading pointless smut.

A writer tutoring a HS student serves as setup for a series of rape-porn interludes, strung together by "emotional" scenes which make no sense unless you assume the characters are being remote controlled by a brain damaged alien with zero understanding of human behavior.

The writer is tutoring his "best friend's" little brother. He harbors a secret lust for his friend. When the kid discovers this he accuses Writer Guy of forcing his fantasies on his brother. The writer is shocked, SHOCKED, that he would be accused of forcing anybody, and so promptly forces sex on the kid (Interlude 1). After this the kid observes -- seriously -- that Writer Guy "would never do anything my brother wouldn't like", and reserves his moral outrage for when his "cruel" brother gets married to some nice female non-rapist. Then bizarre "heart-tugging" scenes spring out of nowhere, as though the writer saw them work in other manga, and thought stringing them together at random between sadistic sex scenarios would be a quick way to earn a few bucks. I got this at the library, if you can believe it. Hopefully donated by a disgusted buyer, and not something my tax money was spent on.

Misaki is struggling to pass his college entrance exams, and has taken up a tutor: the cool and sexy Akihiko Usami, who also happens to be a famous boys' love novelist. At first, Misaki is disgusted by Akihiko, but slowly, Misaki realizes he may be developing feelings for the older man. And so begins the bumpy relationship of this odd couple, filled with comedy and pure romance...

(Short, but very sweet and passionate)

(The Professor's Secret Passion by M.L. Rhodes)

(The Professor's Secret Passion)
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 9/10

PROS:
- One of my favorite fantasies. As such, I found the characters' emotional attachment very believable.
- One of the sweetest stories I've read. The characters have been pining for each other for a very long time, so when they finally come together, it's magical. Really. Sweet, beautiful, loving. I read a one-page section that occurs in the aftermath of the first sex scene three times in a row before I could move on because it was so romantic it took my breath away.
- Great sex scenes. Caring, passionate, intimate.

CONS:
- The "big reveal" about one of the characters' pasts wasn't at all surprising to me; I guessed it very early on.
- Very short - 55 pages. Rhodes does well with that length--better than a lot of other m/m authors manage--but there's a lot of backstory with these characters. I would have liked to have seen some of it rather than hearing about in passing.
- The change in one of the characters seemed a bit sudden for me, but the sweetness of the ending overshadowed that.

Nate is a postgraduate student of 27 years old, openly gay and with a brilliant future career. And he is in love with his mentor, Aidan, a 36 years old professor.

And Nate has decided to speak clearly to Aidan and to let him know his feelings and, with good chances, to start a relationship with him. Doesn't matter if he is his mentor, and if he has a position of authority on him. Like all the youth, he wants all and now.

But Aidan, after a night of passion, is abrutply awaken and try to quit his feelings for Nate: he fear not for himself, but for Nate and for his future. But Nate has no intention to accept a no, when the eyes and body of Aidain proclaim a loud "yes".

Nate is young and intense, obviously to all his against what he wants. He is a positive character, who not easily accept a no like answer, and he is able to read beyond the words to the real feelings of Aidan.

Aidan, even if older, is still unsure in the matter of love; but he is not blind to the feelings of Nate and sure doesn't want to hurt him.

Short but intense, this is a story I would like to continue.

Nathan Turner has finally come to the realization that he needs to tell his Professor about his feelings. He has been his grad student for two years and he can't stop thinking about a relationship with the man.

Aidan Sheridan secretly wants to take his incredibly sexy grad student as a lover, but he has been burned in the past. Aidan is determined that they can never have more than a professional relationship.

When Nathan comes to Aidan's office after hours with a confession, things heat up after Nathan realizes that Aidan just might return his feelings. After a combustible joining, Aidan withdraws, leaving Nathan more confused than ever. Is he strong enough to fight for what he wants?

The Professor's Secret Passion is a masterful story of a deep love between two incredible men. After two years lusting after each other, both men have a series of choices to make in order to find out if they can be together. Nathan is the perfect man for Aidan and I loved how he never gave up despite whatever obstacles Aidan threw at him. I thoroughly enjoyed The Professor's Secret Passion and look forward to taking it off my shelf and re-reading it again!

Professor Aidan Sheridan has secretly fantasized about his grad student, Nathan Turner, for two long years. And now Nathan is hinting he'd like to move beyond their professional association to something on a deeper, more intimate level. Although Aidan longs to claim the sexy, younger man as a lover, he doesn't dare admit that he too, burns for more. Not if he intends to protect Nate from a bitter event in his own past that still haunts him.

When Nate suspects Aidan is hiding his real feelings, he takes matters into his own hands. The long-pent-up passion between them explodes into a night of erotic and emotional intensity neither man can forget. But in the light of day, will Nate's love be enough to heal Aidan, or will the professor's fears tear them apart?

(valuable&intriguing)

(fascinating primary document)

(A fitting sequel for the Material World)

(Outstanding book everyone should read)

(Women's work)
My husband gave me this book when I was starting training for a new job. It has become one of my favorites. I really enjoy the photography in the book and reading the interviews. I liked reading the interviews with the woman and comparing it to her husband's interview. The categories kept the topics fresh, and the country stats helped keep a perspective and context for each family. My feeling was that women everywhere have lots more in common that we might guess, and that women do in fact make the world go round.
i bought this book for my aunt who is a single, middle-aged, jouyful southern woman. she is an exuberant believer in Jesus Christ who unfortunately doesn't know much of his world beyond the USA, and i thought this would be a good way for her to explore it while connecting (a word that is very near to her counselor's heart) with people.
i don't know how much she has read yet, but my sister and i devoured it in the few days that we had it. we came away from it feeling even more curious about life in different places and reminded of our privilege as women to live in a financially independent manner.
all in all, if you need an antidote to self, this book will help.

I read the Material World several years ago and I was excited to see that Peter and Faith had published a "sequel" of sorts for the book. Women in the Material World is fascinating, especially if you can review it side by side to the Material World. I thought the questions regarding love in their marriage and their expectations for their children were so interesting. I am very happy with my purchase of this book and I recommend it to anyone who is considering it.
A companion to Material World: Portrait of the Global Family, this book is an incredible expose of the lives of typical, average women all over the world. I, as an American woman with everything I could ever possibly dream of, especially appreciate seeing how things may have different for me had God just decided to make me the girl child of a Vietnamese working family vs. my background. It really makes you take stock of your life, appreciate it, and feel blessed no matter what your circumstances may be. America is truly a wealthy and favored nation. Even our poor, compared with most of the countries in the world, are rich! We should all feel compelled to give back, not matter how much (or how little) we have. I've been giving this book to my friends for gifts (thank you, Amazon!) A MUST READ!
A sequel to the authors' successful, "Material World: A Global Family Portrait," which interviewed 30 "statistically average" families from around the world and photographed them surrounded by all their worldly goods, "Women In The Material World," by Faith D'Aluisio and Peter Menzel, revisits 21 women from these families.

With interviews conducted by women over a period of days, even weeks, and 375 color photographs of women captured in their daily lives, this is an absorbing look into an overlooked world of marriage, women's work and families. From female circumcision to divorce, from finances to education, gender roles, work, and friends, women discuss every aspect of their lives - seemingly freely.

Two themes repeat through this largely agricultural world - women's work begins before dawn and ends long after dark and most women feel they have enough children - whatever that number may be.

This is a fascinating, captivating and beautiful volume, to be read, not just browsed.
nder the direction of former television producer Faith D'Aluisio, a team of female photojournalists and interviewers was formed to take a closer look at the lives of women on the eve of the 21st century. The rewarding result is a multicultural portrait in words and images that illuminates the hopes, dreams, sorrows, and joys of women around the world. 375 color photos.
A follow-up to coauthor Peter Menzel's laudedMaterial World: A Global Family Portrait,Women in the Material Worldonce again illuminates the human family--but this time with the focus on women. The result is an arresting collection of photographs, interviews, and anecdotes documenting the day-to-day lives and thoughts of women from 20 different countries. From Albania to India to the United States, we hear the female viewpoint on politics and religion, men and marriage, children and education. Cultural stereotypes are both supported (an Ethiopian mother explains why her daughter must be circumcised) and shattered (the loving equity of an Albanian marriage). The gorgeous accompanying photographs artfully link narrative text with faces and environs, from the rugged peaks of Bhutan to the Mediterranean beaches of Israel. What emerges is a captivating survey of women's lives in the late 20th century, and--even more--a powerful feeling of connectedness with these fellow human beings.--Rebecca Gleason

(Not so informational)

(The Other Side of the Closet)

(This book saved my sanity)

(Doom for married bisexuals)

(Life saving reading)
The book was quite long on examples, and then had a tendancy to refer back to examples by name and expects you to remember the details. I was looking for answers to "Why?" and to "Okay now what do I do?" and found that this book did not help.
A chapter later in the book discussed affects on kids, and I found this insightful.

This booked helped my so much. I started reading it within a month of finding out about my gay husband. I never know there would be so many of us in the same situation. This was a subject that I knew nothing about. Reading the book and learning of the phases that we all go though, helped me to understand my feelings. Reading that everyone has periods of these same feelings, made me feel that I was not alone. Anyone who has to face this crisis MUST read this book. You have to see that you will move on with time, this book shows you the steps you will take along the way.

My ex and I were married for 15 years. He never came out. Still insists he's not gay and that I am crazy and vindictive. But I knew he was gay at the end of our marriage. For several years I thought I was the only person this happened to. After reading this book, I found that there are so many circumstances in which these marriages happen, and it was like reading my own story in some places. I learned that this wasn't just a fluke, and it wasn't just me - there are patterns here that I recognized.

I also learned that the whole drama of coming out or staying in the closet is not just up to the homosexual when a straight spouse and family are also involved.

I have been coming out of his closet for a long time. This book was the start. The straight spouse network also really helped me, and continues to help me. The resources in this book are invaluable for anyone who is just starting to deal with this, and for those of us who have been dealing with these family situations for a while.

I came out to my husband five years before he read this book. He didn't believe I was bisexual, but the more often I tried to talk to him about the issue, the further he would shut down. Eventually, he read this book and decided that our marriage was doomed, despite that we had been together for close to twelve years at the time. Our marriage would have been possible to salvage if he'd not read this, bought the propaganda that being married to a bisexual was a disaster, and actually attempted to communicate about the issues both of us were having.

If you're bi and your spouse reads this, expect to be served divorce papers.

No one ever expects to hear the words I heard my husband of 11 years say when he sat me down last January and told me he was gay. We had been together for nearly 16 years and have two young children. I was devistated. I went through (and am still going through) extreme emotional rollercoaster girations that left me dizzy. I felt every emotion nearly everyday. I didn't know which way was up. I didn't know what to do, who to talk to, who to trust. Trust was the first thing I started challenging in my day to day life. Friends, family, coworkers... any one I met I wondered if they too were lying to me. It was a destructive mind set that I eventually, through the help of counseling, got over. Like the book mentions, there is a moment when the strait spouse feels they've been pushed into the closet. Hiding what they know from everyone, pretending things are normal. Having been there, I can attest that that was a very scary time and this book did help me get through that and helped me rescue myself from the closet. 8 months later, I'm in my own house, feeling the freedom to have my own routine, getting on with my life, and we're divorsed but still friends. Most importantly, we're both happier now that we have been for several years. The kids have come first through this whole ordeal and we have managed to keep them on track that there is no shame in who their father is. We still do things as a family, after all, we got divorced from each other not the kids. we even do things as a big happy family with my ex and his partner. The kids seem to have adjusted pretty well so far, but I know the road is long and we've just started the journey.
If anyone is just starting this journey or is having difficulty with a similar situation, I strongly urge you to get this book AND seek counseling. This book helped both of us understand what the other was going through. It will help you. And you will heal over time. Good Luck.

(Review of IM)

(Another great book from Rick R Reed)

(Couldn't put it down)

(Horrors of online dating brought into an all too real perspective)

(WOW - I did NOT see this coming!)
Review of IM
Copyright 2009, Jim Penny
Word count: 566

IM, written by Rick R. Reed, was published by Quest in 2007. It is available in paperback (256 pages) at Amazon for $17.95. The Kindle version will set you back $4.79, and you'll have it in a single minute instead of waiting a week.

Trust me, you do not want to wait for this one.

However, be judicious regarding when you plan to start reading this title. You want to be sure you have no substantial responsibilities for the time it'll take you to read those 256 pages. That is because you are unlikely to put it down until you finish, and let me warn you now, the last 30 pages will leave you breathless with tears streaming. Have the tissues handy.

IM is the story of a serial killer in Chicago who specializes in the brutal murder of gay men who use a particular web site to arrange hook-ups. That is all I'm going to tell you about the story because it's a whodunit, and the more I tell you, the more I take from you the thrill of riding this roller coaster. Besides, there is no way I'm going to do Reed justice in my retelling of his tale. Do yourself a favor and hear it from the horse's mouth.

Although the story in and of itself is worth the price of admission, and it's telling is a study in how to do tell a story, neither was my real take-away from this compelling read. No, the story and it's telling were just the icing on the cake. The cake was the underlying analysis of the dysfunctionality in the gay community that makes it difficult to establish, and damned near impossible to maintain, loving relationships.

Mind you, I'm not sure this theme would be visible to the straight reader.

In particular, we have what I call the filters, which are the requirements one man places on the other men to exclude them from social contact. Too hairy. Too smooth. Too tall. Too fat. Not enough time in gay church, aka the gym. Style of clothing not quite on target. Check the M4M side of Craig's List, while it lasts, and see it for yourself. The list is freakin' endless, and it drives me ber-T-zerk! We pile on requirements for particular physical attributes until if there is an man who meets specifications, he's probably time zones away and unlikely to ever cross your shadow.

Is there any wonder we spend so much of our lives alone?

While presenting all this nonsense, and yes, he does snortle at it all, Reed asks the important question, doing so in a manner that left me processing the question in the background as I continued to race through his prose. And he knows the answer, just as I know the answer, just as every thinking gay man knows the answer, but he leaves it for you to find, which is the real genius lurking just under this delightful and rending story. You can miss it, and you'll still have your excellent read. You can catch it, and now you have your story, and you also have your take-away.

Why are we so screwed up, and how do we get over it? That's another question for another day, but IM and Reed are all over it.

No doubt about it, Rick R. Reed has a magic touch with suspense and horror, and his novel "IM" is a perfect example. This story will grab you by the throat and draw you in to this world of madness and bloodshed from the first sentence. It will then hold you spellbound and fascinated page by page, until the final climax comes crashing down around you, and you wake up and realize that the story is over.

Mr. Reed has written this story from several different viewpoints, allowing the reader to experience the unfolding drama from the eyes of many different people involved - Ed Comparetto, his lover, Timothy Bright, Timothy's aunt, the victims - and giving insight into each one. This makes us understand, although not necessarily sympathize with, the motivation behind their actions. The way the story jumps from viewpoint to viewpoint, sometimes in the present and sometimes back in time, builds the suspense and stretches the tension tight until it quivers on a breaking point. And there it hangs as we watch in horrified fascination as the climax of the story approaches.

The main characters in "IM" are well developed and feel very real in a horrible kind of way. Ed Comparetto and Timothy Bright share the limelight, and while Ed may be considered the "hero" of the story, Timothy is in my opinion the main character. We are given Ed's back story, experience his emotional turmoil, and root for him to flush the malefactor out, but we also seem to witness this all from a couple of steps back. Timothy, on the other hand, we get "down and dirty" with. We delve into his mind, read his aunt's journal entries, and experience his crimes and his rage in the first person. As we look into this killer's psyche, we even may have brief flashes of sympathy for him, but then we pull back and see him for the monster he is. Mr. Reed's description of Timothy as an "evil elf" is very visual and quite effective. It brings to mind horror movies and thoughts of Freddie Krueger and Chucky the homicidal doll.

I found it very difficult to choose a "sensuality level" for this novel. The sexual acts that occur in the story are not especially detailed - this is certainly not a romance or erotica. However, the antagonist's recounting of his own past sexual experiences and tendencies is pretty graphic. I'm giving it a 3 in an attempt at an average, with the caveat that the reader understand how I got there. In this case, the 3 means that it might be a little graphic for younger readers, not that it's sexy. Because it's not sexy...it's frightening. And purposely so.

In all, "IM" is a very well-executed and wonderfully horrifying novel. If you enjoy suspense and horror, there is little doubt that you will enjoy this as much as I did.

This book slammed me into the story right at the beginning and then swept me through to the end. I couldn't stop reading once I started.
A wild ride through the world of gay hook ups, insanity and terror.
Loved it!

Heard all the rave and just had to read IM for myself. Wow.

A too real concept using online dating for the major plot element that will leave you feeling just a bit paranoid if you've ever hooked up with someone from an online service. Once again, Reed's ability to portray realistic, multidimensional characters shines. Some of the horrific content might make you squeamish though, but unlike some horror stories that seem too far fetched to ever be possible, IM is closer to reality, which makes it all the more frightening.

I found myself routing for the protag, and yet, Reed illustrated the motivation of the antagonist so well, I ended up actually understanding, although not justifying, the guy's actions. Very unique writing style and well worth the read for the mystery as much as for the horror.

Wow! IM is the first novel I've read by Rick R Reed - but it certainly won't be the last. Reed takes a modern-day twist of the gay serial killer that is at once unique and intriging; the killer meets all his victims online. Unlike typical serial killer novels, where bodies stack up will police search clues to find the person responsible, IM displays a strong backstory of the killer's life that is served up to the reader in doses throughout the novel. Just when I thought I'd figured out the reason driving Timothy's terror on the city, Reed tosses in a different twist. I thoroughly enjoyed the POV changes throughout the novel, a fine balance that allows the reader a chance to experience what each of the characters are feeling. Odd to say that IM is a love-story, too, however, the emerging bond between the ex-cop, Ed and his boyfriend, Peter, is real...I was sorry to see the novel end for this reason and hope that perhaps, Reed will return later with their continuing story! If you've never read a Rick R Reed Novel, I'd strongly suggest you begin with IM!
The Internet Is the New Meat Market for Gay Men Now a Killer Is Turning the Meat Market into a Meat Wagon.

One by one, he's killing them. Lurking in the digital underworld of Men4HookUpNow.com, he lures, seduces, charms, reaching out through instant messages to the unwary. He's just another guy.

They invite him over. He's just another trick. Harmless. They're dead wrong.

When the first bloody body surfaces, openly gay Chicago Police Department detective Ed Comparetto is called in to investigate. Sickened by the butchered mess of one of his brothers left on display in a bathtub, he seeks relief outside where the young man who discovered the body waits to tell him the story of how he found his friend. But who is this witness...and did he play a bigger part in the murder than he's letting on?

For Comparetto, this encounter with a witness is the beginning of a nightmare. Because this witness did more than just show up at the scene of the crime; he set the scene. And maybe, he's more than just a killer...maybe he's dead himself.

Comparetto is on a journey to discover the truth, a truth that he needs to discover before he loses his career, his boyfriend, his sanity...his life. Because in this killer's world, IM doesn't stand for instant message...it stands for instant murder.

(Actually an enjoyable text to read)

(Required Reading)

(Thinking About Women)
This was the main text for my sociology course on women and I found this book to have really relevant and interesting topics discussed within it.
It was great to be able to find this book online with Amazon.com because my professor "forgot" to tell the campus bookstore that she wanted an older edition of this work. That being said, the author is still living in the 60-70's when women were terribly "oppressed" and everything was gender opinionated. If I didn't have to read this for class, I would burn it much like a bra from a revolutionary of the times.
I have really enjoyed reading this book. It is one of the more interesting textbooks I have read since being in college. The only downside to this book is that some of the statistics are a bit old. Other than that the sociological perspective on gender has never been more interesting.
Thinking about Women introduces readers to how gender operates in society--influencing women's and men's self-concepts, relationships with others, life opportunities, and experiences of inequality. This text examines how gender and the differences it makes still permeate women's and men's lives. Also, the text discusses how gender is socially constructed--that is, formed through early learning patterns that are continuously reinforced throughout all social institutions. Also, the text shows how gender intersects with other social factors, especially race and class, but also sexual orientation, age, religion, and nationality, among others.
