Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The "TOP GUN" Story of Apache Helicopters) 『After you read Ed Macy's description of the Apache pilot's requirements for multi-tasking, eye - hand physical coordination, timing, G-force endurance, heat tolerance, and the myriad of instruments to monitor early in the book, you almost feel unqualified to read any further! These pilots are Super Human! How could you possibly read a book requiring such expertise in aviator skills, and still acquire targets, monitor weapons and ammunition totals, and fight in an all out war! But you take on the challenge and read on. Macy straps you into an Apache AH MK1 and takes you on the ride of your life! I REALLY got into this book! You feel the heat, the grit of prop-washed sand, smell the oil and metal. You get some insight as to how it feels to be living in a war zone. You experience some of the military politics, the camaraderie and team work with fellow pilots, and the adrenaline rush as you take off to engage the enemy. Just wait until the bullets start flying!! This book has maps to help you find your way on various missions and follow the action, a fantastic port and starboard view of the Apache aircraft with descriptions, that allows you to become familiar with it's parts, electronic equipment, and weapons . Things every armchair or experienced aviator needs to know. The book builds up to a very tense nail bitter mission - only you have no time to bite your nails - you're too busy flying. I found Ed Macy's experiences in Afghanistan to be thrilling and captivating, and I could experience it all without the fear of actual bullets piercing my dear old body. (Although I did find myself getting out of my recliner a few times and doing a damage assessment of my body during the course of reading this book) As a former military aviator ( Reconn aircrew) I ate this story up with a spoon and hated to see it end. If you like books of this genre, you will love "Apache". )
(Credible) 『An excerpt from this book was printed in Air&Space Magazine, which is why I ordered it. I guess the rescue attempt for which these folks are well known in the UK was little covered elsewhere ; a shame, since it was such a gutsy move.
The book is well written and accessible to readers with a non-military,or even non military aviation background. There is enough technical information to satisfy the military folks in allied fields, and the jargon/acronyms used are not impenetrable, and whose absence in any case would subvert the accurate portrayal of the job.
The rescue attempt is by no means the total of the book, but is one of the outstanding missions in a job where few operational missions are 'routine', and effectively describes the capabilities of the crews and the the machines, with no histrionics, as is the habitual understated British manner. Credit to all involved, from the support folks to the aircrew themselves. And a timely reminder, without involvement of a political viewpoint, that the UK Military, as challenged as they are by historically (and continuing) botched procurement decisions, has folks who are at the top of their game, and make a significant contribution.)
(Excellent!) 『I'm an airplane guy, not so much into helicopters. I want to learn more about the air fighting in Afghanistan. I finished reading 2 books about fast jet air war, one by a Rafale pilot and "Joint Force Harrier". Both were very interesting but not riveting. Riveting is the least you can say about Ed Macy's book! It put into perspective very clearly the difference between the almost impersonal fast jet war and the very (extremely?)personal, close contact with the troops war of the Apache pilots. It is also very well written, combining missions info with day to day routine (Rocco anyone?). I reread twice the last few chapters to make sure I didn't miss anything. [...])
(One of the finest Warfighter books I have ever read!) 『Ed Macy is as humble as he is courageous. Apache is an outstanding account of what it takes to fly the Apache Helicopter and a book about a very courageous pilot.
The writer provides an in-depth look at the Apache's capabilities, performance and what is required to be able to fly it successfully.
The book is also an excellent story of the courage of the pilot and his comrades in trying to save another comrade.
And the book is well written, interesting, with the right amount of detail and moves at a good pace. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the Apache helicopter or wanting to read what is essentially the diary of a courageous and capable warfighter.)
(excellent reading) 『I really enjoyed this book.Learned alot about the war in afghanistan and U.K. apaches and pilots.Had to reference glossary alot cause of all the abbreviations but author writes well and keeps the story exciting and moves right along. If you like helicopters and war stories this is for you.) 『Apacheis the incredible true story of Ed Macy, a decorated Apache helicopter pilot, that takes you inside the cockpit of the world’s deadliest, most technically advanced helicopter in the world—the Apache helicopter. In the cockpit of an Apache, hands, feet, and even eyes need to operate independently. As strong as a tank and, equipped with two Rolls Royce RTM-322 engines, the helicopter is remarkably fast and nearly impossible to shoot down. And thanks to a powerful array of weapons and cameras, the Apache helicopter can spot prey from miles away—and kill the enemy with a flick of the finger. In 2007, Ed’s Apache squadron was dispatched to Afghanistan’s notorious Helmand Province, with the mission to fight alongside and protect the men on the ground by any means necessary. And when a marine goes missing in action, Ed and his team know they are the army’s only hope of bringing him back alive. With a soldier strapped to each side of two gunships, they must land in the heart of Jugroom Fort, a Taliban stronghold, and come face-to face with hordes of their unrelenting enemy. What follows is a breathtaking rescue, unlike any the world has ever seen. ) relatred Items 『 Apache: Inside the Cockpit of the World's Most Deadly Fighting Machine >

It covers every major feature of Apache and does so without giving too information to the new user while giving more experienced users the guidance to go off on their own and become Apache power users in their own right.)
(Great Apache Resource) 『Some of the reviews for 'Apache Cookbook: Solutions and Examples for Apache Administrators' have stated that this book is a little too basic and simple for Apache administrators out in the world, but I would disagree. Apache is a solid technology that has proven it's mettle in the world for many many many years but there aren't a whole lot of books out on the market for it. It is of this reviewers opinion that even if some individuals feel this book is too simplistic that ANY book on the market that covers Apache would have to be pretty poor to get a negative mark. With over 200 tidbits of information that cover the gambit of Installation, Module creation, Logging, Security, Virtual Hosts, Aliases, SSL, Error Handling, Performance, etc. etc. etc. this is a solid text. Unlike other bloated books this one clocks in at under 300 pages and the tidbits are short and to the point. If you are an Apache admin there is definitely something that you can get from this cookbook so get out the bowl, eggs, flour and start cooking!!
***** RECOMMENDED)
(Great Resource!) 『Apache Cookbook is a great resource on various best-practice tips and tricks on how to setup and run Apache HTTP server day to day.
The included HOW-TO recipes are: * Extremely practical and relevant * Easy to follow and implement * Well-explained so that not only do you know what you are doing, but also why you are doing it * Neatly categorized and indexed so that they are easy to find when needed
While this book can be very useful to Apache novices, people who would benefit the most from it are the ones who've had some previous exposure to Apache administration and are familiar with the basic concepts behind Apache (configuration files, included programs, modules, directives, sections, and such).
If you are an Apache administrator, this book ought to be on your bookshelf.)
(A little too basic for me) 『Beware that several of the cool sounding recipes you might see in the table of contents are tricks; once you actually turn to the correct page to see how the author has managed to implement something you might have formerly believed to be impossible, you will be greeted only by a placeholder paragraph stating that what you want to do IS in fact impossible. Why on Earth would you waste paper printing this?
The other, less cool, recipes are pretty standard faire, and if you have any experience with Apache whatsoever they will probably not be very useful to you. Complete newcomers however will probably find it somewhat handy, though I'm not sure it's worth the price even for them.)
(Excellent resource for web masters) 『I read this book about a year ago and recently re-read it. Coar and Bowen provide an excellent pragmatic approach to taking care of common Apache administration tasks. The Apache "recipes" are well organized, and presented with sufficient depth to be understandable for intermedia users.
The tips in the "miscellaneous topics" section and the troubleshooting guidelines are excellent, and will save Apache administrators significant amounts of time and frustration.
The good: * Broad coverage of all tasks that Apache administrators will commonly encounter. * Excellent writing style - concise yet sufficiently descriptive. * Good organization of topics and very useful book index. * Very good coverage of virtual hosts (required in most web hosting environments). * Very appropriate "see also" references associated with each recipe.
The bad: * Almost 25% of the book is taken up by installation, loading modules, and logging. These are good topics, but they take up too much of the book in my perspective. * No information on the use of mod_python. mod_snake (a dead sourceforge) project is referenced. Blech. * No information on co-hosting two versions of PHP (PHP4 and PHP5 on the same server).
Overall, this is a great book. If it had slightly better coverage on mod_python and mod_PHP I would give it five stars for certain.) 『There's plenty of documentation on installing and configuring the Apache web server, but where do you find help for the day-to-day stuff, like adding common modules or fine-tuning your activity logging? That's easy. The new edition of theApache Cookbookoffers you updated solutions to the problems you're likely to encounter with the new versions of Apache.
Written by members of the Apache Software Foundation, and thoroughly revised for Apache versions 2.0 and 2.2, recipes in this book range from simple tasks, such installing the server on Red Hat Linux or Windows, to more complex tasks, such as setting up name-based virtual hosts or securing and managing your proxy server. Altogether, you get more than 200 timesaving recipes for solving a crisis or other deadline conundrums, with topics including: - Security
- Aliases, Redirecting, and Rewriting
- CGI Scripts, the suexec Wrapper, and other dynamic content techniques
- Error Handling
- SSL
- Performance
This book tackles everything from beginner problems to those faced by experienced users. For every problem addressed in the book, you will find a worked-out solution that includes short, focused pieces of code you can use immediately. You also get explanations of how and why the code works, so you can adapt the problem-solving techniques to similar situations. Instead of poking around mailing lists, online documentation, and other sources, rely on the Apache Cookbookfor quick solutions when you need them. Then you can spend your time and energy where it matters most. )

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The one!) 『All I can say if you buy one Apache book make sure this is the one. After all securing your Apache installation is the most important thing. Also check out the Apache Security site.
Ivan is awesome!)
(A good reference, but a tad dated now.) 『I've had the book Apache Security for a while now, so I thought I'd give it a quick review.
Like most O'Reilly books, it's well thought out and fairly complete. Unsurprisingly, it focuses on the standard LAMP stack, giving advice on building and deploying Apache and hooking in PHP and SSL. Ruby seem to be missing, and Perl is just discussed within a chroot environment. It discusses performance tuning a bit, in the guise of protection against DOS, and then moves onto issues in a shared hosting environment.
Much of what is in this book is more general than just Apache, so it's best to consider this as a general security book for people running both Linux and Apache, and ideally using PHP and MySQL. It would be less useful to people running Apache on Windows and for people using less common languages. However, it is very good for the basics:
* Installing Apache * Hardening Apache * Setting up chroot * Hardening PHP * Configuring logging and access * Understanding web attacks Where it seems to lack a bit is:
* It presumes that the reader will install Apache from source, whereas most these days will install from a package. More advice on hardening Apache in the SuSE, Red Hat and Ubuntu/Debian environments would be useful. * There is no mention of AppArmor or SELinux (which, to be fair, were pretty new when this book came out). A second edition will have to have these, as they are a key way to protect Apache against itself. * A few pages on how to use Suhosin to protect PHP applications would be good. * A section on protecting Ruby and one on Perl would be good. While it is certainly true that no book can cover everything, these three languages are the most common in the LAMP world and should probably be addressed, at least in passing. * While we're at it, a section on hardening MySQL wouldn't be out place, as the book is more of a LAMP book than an Apache book anyway.
I recommend this book for the beginner to moderate admin, be they a web admin or in the security space. However, experienced people may not find much new in here. I would, however, love to see a second edition released.)
(A very easy read, on what could have been a dry topic) 『In the almost four years since this book was published the area of security, and of web security in particular has continued to move on at a significant pace. While there are many new specifics in this area, the underlying principals of this book are still fundamentally sound and a you get a very strong foundation in Apache in general, and Apache security specifically.
Unlike many O'Reilly books that punish you for reading from cover to cover, this one is very well edited, avoids telling you in a chapter what it told you in three previous chapters and the Ivan's writing style makes this a very fast read.
The section on mod_security is a lot longer than would normally make sense, but since Ivan wrote it this is not unexpected.
A very good read, and I hope at some point an updated version is released to cover the evolving area of web security.
)
(Crucial reference for Apache web server admins) 『From my perspective: As a Linux / BSD sysadmin (but Apache httpd novice), I purchased this book a few months ago in hopes of supplementing my Apache learning. I wanted to learn the "right" (i.e. secure) way of configuring our Apache deployments from the start.
Along with the Apache project's official directive / module references, this book helped provide a great foundation for understanding how to configure and harden Apache. The most useful things I took away from Apache Security were:
* creating a cruft-free, secure by default httpd.conf; * hardening PHP; * getting more from httpd logging; and * really, finally understanding SSL/TLS (and keys and certs).
There is a lot of information in the book, so I'll likely be reading it cover-to-cover at least once more to glean the next round of tips and concepts.)
(Much more than just Apache Security) 『I found this book while browsing the programming section of Borders (the programming section of my local Borders is amazing!), and I've found it to be a real gem.
The book covers so much more than just Apache security. It covers installation and configuration, and explains a little of how Apache works along the way. There are also chapters or sections on:
- Understanding and securing PHP - An explanation of SSL - DOS attacks - Traffic shaping in Apache - Logging is covered extensively - There's a chapter on web security in general, where all the common attacks are explained - Using Apache as a proxy or a reverse proxy
I especially enjoyed the Web Security Assessment chapter where the author explained how to systematically analyze and probe web applications/servers, with many real world examples.
There is a large section discussing mod_security, which is an amazing Apache module. Mod_security is an intrusion detection and prevention engine for web applications (a web application firewall). The book is written by the author of mod_security (Ivan Ristic), so he really knows what he's talking about in this area. Also covered is mod_dosevasive, which, obviously helps prevent against denial of service attacks.
I would not hesitate to recommend this book to any Apache administrator, user, or web programmer. Its one of my favorite books on my bookshelf.) 『With more than 67% of web servers running Apache, it is by far the most widely used web server platform in the world. Apache has evolved into a powerful system that easily rivals other HTTP servers in terms of functionality, efficiency, and speed. Despite these impressive capabilities, though, Apache is only a beneficial tool if it's a secure one. To be sure, administrators installing and configuring Apache still need a sure-fire way to secure it--whether it's running a huge e-commerce operation, corporate intranet, or just a small hobby site.
Our new guide,Apache Security, gives administrators and webmasters just what they crave--a comprehensive security source for Apache. Successfully combining Apache administration and web security topics,Apache Securityspeaks to nearly everyone in the field. What's more, it offers a concise introduction to the theory of securing Apache, as well as a broad perspective on server security in general.
But this book isn't just about theory. The real strength ofApache Securitylies in its wealth of interesting and practical advice, with many real-life examples and solutions. Administrators and programmers will learn how to: - install and configure Apache
- prevent denial of service (DoS) and other attacks
- securely share servers
- control logging and monitoring
- secure custom-written web applications
- conduct a web security assessment
- use mod_security and other security-related modules
And that's just the tip of the iceberg, as mainstream Apache users will also gain valuable information on PHP and SSL/ TLS. Clearly, Apache Securityis packed and to the point, with plenty of details for locking down this extremely popular and versatile web server. )

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Perfect Book to Get You Started.) 『What a wonderful and well-documented book. If you are just starting out with PHP, MySql and Apache then you have found a great starting point. The DVD covers many facets and shows you clear examples of the concepts explained. I recommend that you start your PHP journey here.
Experienced developers can also benefit, as they will take away at least one good idea or perhaps view a project differently.
The book covers in depth many aspects of PHP, including a few that I have not used in many years. Each chapter builds on the previous and the workshops and full code examples will give you a hands on view on how the code is built. I particularly like the paper used in the book, because it is bright. Some companies have switched to a duller paper for their own reasons.
The book starts with installation of everything software that you need to start. The book covers database design, generating images with PHP and even fine tuning Apache. The DVD lessons are short enough to remain interesting, but long enough to cover the point.
)
(a "B" on hype a "D" on execution equals 2 stars!) 『I wish I had taken the time to review this book before purchasing but that's on me. I bought this book because of the title and the work sessions described; very practical material. Fortunatley, these three applications(Apache,PHP and Mysql) came preconfigured with Fedora 10 so I was spared the headache of setting this up like so many others on this forum.I have programming experience but I am quite new to php and mysql. I started off with a little bit of the introductory chapters to become familiar with the syntax and then jumped to chapter 11,Working with forms. I've never experienced a book with so many typos! Even worse, it's the fourth edition. These things should be hammered out by now! What put the icing on the cake for me was that when I went to the disk for clarification, sections of code on the disk were incomplete. I can't even return this piece of cr*p because I unwrapped the useless disk. This book should be called "Sams Teach yourself Trouble Shooting" because that's what you will be doing.I couldn't get half the projects to work until I check out other sources.I finally had to put this book down after losing faith in the code to actually work. If you are new to Apache, PHP and MySQL, this is not the book for you! Fortunately, I had another PHP book which had accurate examples; PHP For The World Wide Web: Larry Ullman. This book also has a chapter on working with MySQL.I haven't finished the book but all the examples I've typed have worked so far. Another book I've been working with is Fedora 9 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Bible: Christopher Negus. This gives pretty good information on setting up apache and MySQL. Not so much on PHP. There probably is a "Bible" for other OS. For both of these books I paid less than $8. This compares to $35 I spent on this soon to be door jam called Sam's Teach Yourself!)
(Fantastic book, covers everything from the basic to the not so basic!!) 『Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache All in One (4th Edition)
Im new to PHP and MySQL with only minimal coding experience in other web languages. I found this book an invaluable resource when developing my business' website. So many books and reference material give you blind instructions to go from A to B to C with no information as to why you're doing it and how you can use this information in any other way that the specific example they provide. This book is happily, very different! You gain an understanding of why you're using the code provided, what it's function is and how you can use it in other ways.
I highly recommend this book to anyone setting up a dynamic webpage, anyone new to MySQL, PHP or Apache, and anyone looking to broaden their programming skills. You can't go wrong!!!)
(too much missing data) 『I do not recommend this book to anyone. It is sketchy and it keeps pointng you to the internet to accomplish simple tasks. The whole purpose of buying a book is to not have the aggravation of hunting on the net. This author also seems very confused, especially in the beginning. Had it not been for data I hunted for on the net, I would not have been able to install the PHP, MySQL or Apache. Take for example, after installing Apache, she mentions that you need to first configure Apache via the httpd.conf file then does not tell you how. She then goes on to the next section of installing PHP leaving you to figure out how to get Apache working. The MYSQL for me did not install either; I had to download a copy off the net. Too much missing data in this book.
Marc)
(My Review will be short and sweet) 『PROS: * Learned a lot PHP syntax * Learned concept behind PHP * Easy to read and somewhat to follow
CONS: * Instructions are accurate * When installing CD i got lost and had to find a way to get back on track * Difficulty following author when she use codes with which platform(should of stick to Windows ONLY since its the most popular)
OVERALL: Worth buying, I don't regret it. I recommend this book for people with some experience in programming not a total beginner. ) 『Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL® and Apache All in One Fourth Edition Julie C. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Apache - book review) 『Seller was very good for pricing, shipping, delivery and condition (new).
Excellent book, cover unix and windows install and configuration.
Just be sure to get the latest version.)
(Helpful, but questionable...) 『This book reads like a journal of somebody who has never configured a web server at all, literally saying things like, "We tried this, and we got this error message". While the author is trying to create a noob friendly book here, it comes off like it was written by noobs (which probably isn't actually the case).
There are also some questionable things, for example, they create a shell script that must run in a particular directory. They actually say "you must cd to the directory first" and then use the shell built-in 'pwd' instead of the dot operator for the current directory -- twice on one line! This comes off as pretty noobish to me. In the old days, this would cause 300,000 lines of kernel code to execute an external program and return, but at least the shell implements pwd as a builtin these days. Still, it was one of those small things that makes you wonder about a book...
Despite this, the book IS useful for a noob to learn some Apache basics and make the conf files more readable. I had a 10 year old Apache Bible with Y2K material in it that in some ways was more helpful. Still, I am still reading the relevant sections and the book is helping me get a task done at work.)
(Waste of paper) 『Most of the time you can trust O'Reilly technical books. But this dog should be drug out back and shot. It's out of date, it's poorly written, it meanders all over the place. I'm pretty tolerant of technical writing as long as I'm learning what I need to along the way. But at a time when I was highly motivated to get up to speed on Apache I literally gave up and threw this on the floor in frustration. Buy any other book on Apache. This one sucks.)
(This book is not a tutorial.) 『This book is not a tutorial on Apache. Forget about this book if you're seeking to implement the ubiquitous LAMP (Linux, Apache, MYSQL, PHP) combination. Perhaps you wish to complement your pursuit of a computer science degree with some resume enhancing practical skills. Or perhaps you're a seeking some IT certifications, or perhaps you're a hobbyist web developer - in all cases this book contains nothing that couldn't be freely found on an internet search engine. Most of the book's chapters consist of a series of Apache's features with each followed by a cryptic discussion that doesn't actually teach you anything. So unless you're a Apache expert looking for a handy reference to keep close at hand then please buy something else. Like a book that actually does the job of teaching you to do something with Apache.)
(Java 1 there's a good reason) 『Hi, I read a few weeks ago some reviews complaining that this textbook doesn't deal with recent Java SDK like 4.1 or 5. Then I had trouble ping-ing an XP home pc, so I learned that ping works with ICMP, I thought maybe if I write a little ping-debugger I'd get somewhere near an answer, my PC linux is a Debian, I searched for some ICMP Java classes for Debian, then I found out that the latest Java SDK for Linux is 1.1. So don't put the blame on this Apache manual (IMHO) "il ne peut pas aller plus vite que la musique") 『Apache is far and away the most widely used web server platform in the world. This versatile server runs more than half of the world's existing web sites. Apache is both free and rock-solid, running more than 21 million web sites ranging from huge e-commerce operations to corporate intranets and smaller hobby sites. Updated to cover the changes in Apache's latest release, 2.0, as well as Apache 1.3, this useful guide discusses how to obtain, set up, secure, modify, and troubleshoot the Apache software on both Unix and Windows systems. Dozens of clearly written examples provide the answers to the real-world issues that Apache administrators face everyday. In addition to covering the installation and configuration of mod_perl and Tomcat, the book examines PHP, Cocoon, and other new technologies that are associated with the Apache web server. Additional coverage of security and the Apache 2.0 API makeApache: The Definitive Guide, Third Edition essential documentation for the world's most popular web server.)

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Great for programmers AND webmasters!) 『This book is perfect for programmers AND webmasters! Before reading this book I had very limited knowledge of what mod rewrite was or how it worked. After I finished it I was able to:
1. Make search engine friendly URLs (dynamically generated by my site) work.
2. Block bad bots and remote file inclusion attempts.
3. Rename pages or move them seamlessly.
I would recommend this book to anyone, it was easy to understand even from the point of view of someone just starting out.)
("Definitive" might be stretching it a bit) 『The freely available online documentation for mod_rewrite is a great deal more "definitive" than this book could ever hope to be, but it's also a great deal more difficult to navigate and read. This book is considerably more human friendly and un-man-page-like, and even if it doesn't contain a specific solution for your particular problem, it will at least point you in the right direction so you have some general idea of where to look in the official docs.)
(Just read the online documentation) 『I was very disappointed with this book. The information inside is so basic and cursory that you're bound to quickly run into situations more advanced than the contents can cover.
For instance, it doesn't deal at all with using a rewritemap within a rewritecond, and it only gives one small paragraph to rewritecond backreferences. I've spent the last few weeks scouring the internet for details about mod_rewrite, and there's very little documentation.
This book, at most, aggregates that documentation in one place. To call it the "definitive guide" is a bit much.)
(Definitely definitive) 『The Definitive Guide to Apache mod_rewrite by Rich Bowen leaves nothing to be desired. After pointing out when not to use mod_rewrite, a chapter on regular expressions and one on installing and configuring mod_rewrite (both statically and as a dynamic object), the author digs right in to the RewriteRule directive with clear examples for doing simple and more complex redirection. Chapter five expands on those rules with the RewriteCond directive illustrating its strength with time-based redirection (different pages day&night) and how to solve the "image theft" problem, and chapter six lays out the RewriteMap directive which allows to map URLs based on external data; I again found some very good examples here.
The next two chapters cover real-world examples which include adjusting URLs, reorganization of content, forcing SSL, and serving content based on a username. Access control, virtual hosts (yes, using mod_rewrite!), proxying and debugging make up the remaining chapters which are packed full of information (a lot of which I didn't know about).
I think that The Definitive Guide to Apache mod_rewrite really is just that: definitive. It is a must have for any systems administrator who wants to use mod_rewrite on an Apache web server, and I strongly recommend it.)
(Great way to learn how to make Apache adapt to your needs) 『Apache is the most commonly employed web server software on the Internet. While it is powerful and flexible out of the box your needs may require more advanced security, virtual web servers, flexibility or other items that can easily be changed. The ability to use mod_rewrite allows you to rewrite your URL in many ways so that it works the way you want it to. Among its other capabilities it allows you to set up Mass Virtual Hosting and rearrange your site with ease. And for those of us who love the Linux world the use of regular expressions allows a lot of flexibility. Some of the more powerful features include the ability to use conditional rewrites (the content is different based on usernames), force users to enter the site only through the main page, limit user access to particular directories, prevent spider access, and prevent image theft. The Definitive Guide to Apache mod_rewrite is a highly recommended introduction to this very popular but vastly under-documented program.) 『Organizing websites is highly dynamic and often chaotic. Thus, it is crucial that host web servers manipulate URLs in order to cope with temporarily or permanently relocated resources, prevent attacks by automated worms, and control resource access. The Apache mod_rewrite module has long inspired fits of joy because it offers an unparalleled toolset for manipulating URLs.The Definitive Guide to Apache mod_rewriteguides you through configuration and use of the module for a variety of purposes, including basic and conditional rewrites, access control, virtual host maintenance, and proxies. This book was authored by Rich Bowen, noted Apache expert and Apache Software Foundation member, and draws on his years of experience administering, and regular speaking and writing about, the Apache server.)

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Required Resource for Writing Modules in C) 『This should be considered a required resource if you need to learn about writing apache modules. It is the best introduction available to writing modules for Apache 2, and holds up well as a reference.)
(Consistent, well-written, but a bit gap toothed) 『This book easily earns five stars despite a few glaring issues. Why? It's the best, most consitent, and approachable guide you'll find to writing Apache modules.
I spent two weeks scouring the net for APR examples and explanations. I started with the O'Reilly books only to find they are incredibly out of date. I moved on to Apache sanctioned module source code. I dissected source code for other modules only to find that the examples fluctuated on approach and, apparently, on the author's grasp of the entire APR libraries. Some folks wrote against previous APR version libraries and macros. Others used the updated APR. Still others rolled their own versions of functions that were already written, just not discovered. Tutorials varied in reliability with similar issues. And my desk quickly filled with highlighted and sticky-noted annotated examples.
This book replaced all those loose inconsistent notes with a solid example-centric nicely bound guide. Five stars. Just for that.
This book is not without problems though. First, it makes reference to programming paradigms which, frankly, I've never heard of before and which this book inadequately explains. Brigade buckets is an example. Bridage buckets are incrementally explained as a ring data store (eh?), a doubly linked list (okay, firm ground), and then a mechanism for passing data through layered IO (another eh?). I couldn't get much from the explanation. Googling "brigade bucket" led to IEEE DSP circuit design and a heated debate on using solid state delay effects for guitar pedals. Apparently brigade buckets don't quote share the same prolific status as, say, something more Knuth-ess.
The book explained thread safety in a similarly gap toothed summary. It offers this fatherly advice: avoid shared memory and make sure functions are reentrant. That wasn't much help for me. I'd prefer to have a detailed explanation of why the APR libraries have both reentrant and non-reentrant versions of the same functions. Wouldn't any reasonable programmer always use the reentrant version? If not, I'd like to know why... with some precision.
The final gripe: the book includes RFC 2616 in it's entirety. This needlessly adds 200 pages of non-original and otherwise easily (and FREEly) accessibe volume. Granted, the publisher formatted the RFC nicely. It's a bit easier to read than the fixed format of the real RFC. But why not add a few notes? The author could have taken the edge off of the RFC-legalese and made it a bit more approachable (think learning bible with more notes than text). At the risk of discouraging future books of this level, the RFC is a blatant copout and just a really disgusting way of bumping page numbers.
So, those are the issues I had. I'm still giving this a solid five as it outshines any other information I've found to date.)
(The definitive source for Apache module writers) 『I tried to write an Apache module using only the documentation and reference material available on the net, and failed. The documentation you can find on the net (even on Apache.org's own website) is either completely out of date or maddeningly vague. If you spend enough time in trial and error you might get your module to work. Then again, you might not.
If you're trying to write or maintain an Apache module, this book is an invaluable tutorial and resource. It saved me a great deal of time and frustration.)
(THE Reference for Writing Apache Modules in C) 『This book came recommended to me from a well-learned Apache module developer, and I can't laud it enough. It is simply impossible to find another reference text out there that covers this topic with this level of completeness. I'm not really sure why the HTTP RFC and the Apache Software License is tacked on to the end of the book, but the real content of the book make it well worth the relatively hefty price tag.)
(Perfect for any serious programmer's Apache reference collection.) 『Apache is more than a popular Web server; it's a versatile and complex platform covered well in THE APACHE MODULES BOOK, the first guide for developers who already work with Apache and want to make the most of its features. From code security and basic processing to C-based shortcuts and techniques, APACHE MODULES BOOK uses real-world code examples and techniques to provide an excellent manual of basics. Perfect for any serious programmer's Apache reference collection.) 『"Do you learn best by example and experimentation? This book is ideal. Have your favorite editor and compiler ready–you'll encounter example code you'll want to try right away. You've picked the right book–this is sure to become the de facto standard guide to writing Apache modules." –Rich Bowen, coauthor, Apache Administrators Handbook, Apache Cookbook, and The Definitive Guide to Apache mod_rewrite
"A first-rate guide to getting the most out of Apache as a modular application platform–sure to become a must-read for any Apache programmer, from beginner to experienced professional. It builds up carefully and meticulously from the absolute basics, while including chapters on everything from the popular Apache DBD Framework to best practices, security, and debugging." –Noirin Plunkett, documentation committer to the Apache httpd project, and member of the ASF conference committee
The Only Comprehensive Guide to Developing Apache 2.x Modules and ApplicationsApache is more than the world's most popular Web server–it's also an extraordinarily powerful and extensible development platform. Now, ApacheTutor.org's Nick Kew has writtenThe Apache Modules Book, the first start-to-finish, example-rich guide for every developer who wants to make the most of Apache.
Kew begins with detailed, accessible introductions to Apache's architecture and API, then illuminates all the techniques you'll need, from request processing through code security. He brings together the best of both worlds: powerful C-based techniques for accomplishing tasks Perl or PHP can't handle, implemented with tools that deliver all the productivity you'd expect from higher-level languages. Utilizing realistic code samples, Kew introduces techniques documented in no other book-and, often, nowhere else at all.
Coverage includes - Using Apache Portable Runtime (APR) to streamline C development and avoid its pitfalls
- Leveraging Apache DBD to build applications far more scalable than classic LAMP software
- Working with the latest Apache 2.x features: filter modules, XML support, and smart proxies
- Mastering best practices, from thread safety to multi-platform development
- Utilizing the Apache Authentication Framework

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Very useful in building and configuring Apache) 『I bought this book because I need to set up a data repository using a WebDAV server. The first couple of chapters were very useful in telling me what modules I needed and how I could configure Apache to allow a secure repository for several groups of researchers.)
(A Good Publisher, Good Book) 『Like ALMOST everything I have purchased from this publisher, this is a competent and useful resource on the topic.)
(Best Apache HTTP Server book I've owned) 『I own and have read numerous Apache books over the last seven years. I believe this publication to be the best reference book for the workplace.
O'Reilly books are definitely well written; however, I find myself ALWAYS going to this book first, even though it was published in 2004. The Apache Directives, topics, and examples covered are timeless. It puts side-by-side code base 1.3 and 2.0, with strength of focus on the 2.0 code base. If you use the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) online documentation along with this book, then you will be able to perform in the workplace. Nearly everything covered in this book is relevant today and even translates to the 2.2 code base.
I can't wait for the next revision to cover the 2.2 code base in depth. Unfortunately, publications can't keep up with ASF releases and the new and re-factored modules. It takes about two years for a solid book to be put into circulation after ASF makes a major release available.
Well done Peter!)
(Not a XXI century book) 『This book contains some meaningful information but is largely obsolete.
Some fairly informative chapters contain introduction to common configuration, authentication, configuring SSL, using WebDAV and subversion.
But lot of space in the book is wasted on topics that were cool in the last century like compiling apache and compiling single modules, but not relevant anymore. Today you are likely not going to recompile you server every week, but you SHOULD install security patches every week, if you take your job seriously. IMHO there is only one possibility - to rely on the services of your linux distribution.
By the way, Debian and derived distributions also do a great job combating the mess in the httpd.conf by meaningfully dividing it in multiple configuration files, so you have a good place to put your specific settings making an automated upgrade to the newer apache version easy. So do not listen to the author, never edit your httpd.conf. ;-)
The author describes in detail topics, that are not relevant anymore in the web application development (assumed that you are creating an application, that goes besides "hello world"). Delivering dynamic content (chapter 6) used to be server-side includes and cgi but it is NOT anymore because of poor programming model and poor performance.
Typical scenario nowadays is to use apache as a front end web server, letting apache serve the static content like pictures and providing a wrapper or proxy to a high performance application server (for example mongrel if you using rails) or using mod_python for python or using zope etc. In this context I would wish elaborative description on mod_rewrite, that is pretty complicated.
My conclusion: if you are beginner, search for a better introductory book. If you are advanced developer/admin/hacker, then use primary resources like [....])
(Professional's Apache Reference) 『This is by far the best standalone book on Apache I've seen. It really is a very good reference for professional web server admins, as well as developers and others, who need help in managing Apache web servers. It's well-written too, something that is becoming increasingly rare in the technical book area.) 『"...a behemoth of a resource for everything you ever wanted to know about Apache."— Doug Schasteen, member, Kansas City's PHP User Group"This is by far the best‘know all, end all’ reference, bar none. My hat goes off to Peter Wainwright and Apress for opening up a whole new world to me." — Eric Wolf (a.k.a. "nawlej"), Codewalkers.com This book aims to teach you everything you need to know to build, install, and configure every aspect of Apache, the world's most popular Web server. Two versions of Apache are now available. Apache 1.3 is still widely used and is continuously updated. Apache 2 offers new and powerful features, such as multi-processsing modules and filters, as well as a revised and expanded build system for compiling Apachefrom source. This book comprehensively covers both server versions, presenting up-to-date information and examples, and highlighting variations bettween the two releases in context. In addition, this book is organized to provide solutions to common problems. It answers the questions that administrators like you typically ask, without requiring that you know the name of a specific Apache module or directive beforehand. This book also demonstrates multiple solutions to a problem, and contrasts the benefits and drawbacks of each approach. After reading Pro Apache, you'll know not only how to get the results you want, but also why a solution works the way it does. Finally, this book examines how to accomplish more advanced configurations, where individual features must cooperate with each other intelligently. Now in its third edition, the expertise found in Pro Apache makes it the definitive guide to harnessing the power of Apache safely and securely.)

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Will Have a Permanent Spot on My Desk) 『There's no question that Apache powers the World Wide Wide. It runs over half of the world's web sites. If you work in the web industry then there's every chance that you'll have to deal with Apache at some point. Like many people, I don't consider myself a webmaster, but I run several web sites using Apache so I need to know how to get the most out of it.
Over the years, I have bought several books about Apache. They tend to get read once and then left to gather dust on the bookshelf. I never really need an in-depth knowledge of Apache, but I often need to know all about the one feature that I need to solve my current problem. Usually this involves a lot of Googling, but now I think I'll have this book on my desk and it will safe me a lot of time.
This book does exactly what the title implies. It is a complete (but concise) reference to Apace. In particular, most of the book is taken up with descriptions of Apache's myriad configuration options. This material all uses a standard layout which makes it easy to find and understand exactly the information that you need. One particularly nice touch is a key at the top of each entry telling you which contexts a configuration option can be used in. Never again will I have an excuse for putting an option in a .htaccess file when it only works in a direcotry context.
There is a lot of information packed into this small book. No space is wasted cramming the data in. But it's not too dense to be unusable. The information is always clear and easy to follow.
If you're a part-time Apache webmaster like me, then I think you'll find this book very useful.) 『Even if you know the Apache web server inside and out, you still need an occasional on-the-job reminder -- especially if you're moving to the newer Apache 2.x.Apache 2 Pocket Referencegives you exactly what you need to get the job done without forcing you to plow through a cumbersome, doorstop-sized reference.
This Book provides essential information to help you configure and maintain the server quickly, with brief explanations that get directly to the point. It covers Apache 2.x, giving web masters, web administrators, and programmers a quick and easy reference solution.
This pocket reference includes:
- Summaries of command-line options, configuration directives, and modules
- Key information about Apache support utilities
- What you need to know about URL rewriting, filters, caching, proxying and security
Whether you manage huge e-commerce operations, corporate intranets, or small personal websites,Apache 2 Pocket Referenceis ideal for savvy administrators who no longer need detailed tutorials and just want a convenient, on-the-job reference. )

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Not what I thought) 『I bought this book because I had looked at the review and the contents of the book and thought that it would be really good. Well, needless to say I had a hard time finishing the book. I found it to be boring and really drawn out. It lost my interest about halfway through I was very disappointed. I normally like this kind of a book the native american romances and I think that from now on I will stick with Cassie Edwards novels!! Hers are interesting and have action all the way through! )
(Enjoyable Read) 『I have just finished reading this book and must say I can't wait to read Amanda's sister, Candy and Damon's story. I was looking for some summer reading and liking Historical Romances, this one caught my eye. The authors research on the history of the Chiricahua Apaches was very interesting and made you feel like you were learning their ways of life right along with Amanda. I for one was glad to see that the main couple didn't just fall into being together without really learning of each other first. It took months of the learning and getting to know and respect each other and was very well written. I have added this author to my list of "must reads". I hope there is more of Amanda and Kayto's story in her next book also.)
(Romance with historical twist) 『This is a historical romance about the Chiricahua Tribe of the Apache Indians and a captive white girl's introduction into the 'life-way' of the Apaches. The historical information about the Chiricahua was interesting and seemed to be well researched. The history gave some insight into the 'why' behind tribal customs that were not understood by the Americans of that time period (1860's). Using Cochise as one of the 'larger than life' characters in the book gave some depth to the story line. This is not an academic work on the history of the Apache Indians. It is an enjoyable, relaxing read with a happy, if implausible ending. A sequel or another historical romance from this author would be welcomed.) 『"Unbidden Yearnings Always Lead To"...Every day that Amanda Carroll and her sister travel farther west, they worry about possible Indian attacks. Their greatest fear becomes reality when five armed Apaches surround their coach. Brazenly confronting her attackers, Amanda looks straight into the dark eyes of their fierce leader - only to be shocked by the intense attraction she feels for this bronzed Apache warrior..."The Most Wicked Pleasure"...Kayto and his warriors had no intention to harm anyone, let alone the stunning woman before him. He is intrigued by her courage as she stares at him so defiantly - and a slow, searing desire ignites deep within him.
