A young girl must rely on her wits and imagination when she is separated from her soldier father and sent to a strict boarding school. After the critical success of 1993'sThe Secret Garden, Warner Bros. returned to the novels of Frances Hodgson Burnett to create this 1995 adaptation ofA Little Princess, which instantly ranked withThe Secret Gardenas one of the finest children's films of the 1990s. Neither film was a huge box-office success, but their quality speaks for itself, andA Little Princesshas all the ingredients of a timeless classic. A marvel of production design, the film features lavish sets built almost entirely on a studio backlot in Burbank, California. The story opens in New York just before the outbreak of World War I, when young Sara (Liesel Matthews) is enrolled in private boarding school while her father goes off to war. Under the domineering scrutiny of the school's wicked headmistress, Miss Minchen (Eleanor Bron), Sara quickly becomes popular with her schoolmates, but fate intervenes and she soon faces a stern reversal of fortune, resorting to wild flights of fancy to cope with an unexpectedly harsh reality. Rather than label her fanciful tales as escapist fantasy,A Little Princessactively encourages a child's power of imagination--a power that can be used to learn, grow, and adapt to a world that is often cruel and difficult. It's also one of the most visually beautiful films of the '90s and creates a fully detailed world within the boarding school--a place where imagination is vital to survival. A first-class production in every respect, this is one family film that should (if it's not too stuffy to say it) be considered required viewing for parents and kids alike.--Jeff Shannon After the critical success of 1993'sThe Secret Garden, Warner Bros. returned to the novels of Frances Hodgson Burnett to create this 1995 adaptation ofA Little Princess, which instantly ranked withThe Secret Gardenas one of the finest children's films of the 1990s. Released in 1976, the film features a dynamite Curtis Mayfield soundtrack. Should benefit from the similarly themed ""Dreamgirls,"" which looks likely to be a huge hit this season. " BeforeDreamgirlshit cineplexes in 2006, there wasSparkle. Released in 1976, the low-budget movie (which is also loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes) achieved somewhat of a cult following among fans that enjoy a good cry along with their kitsch.Sparkletells the rags-to-riches (and rags again, for some of the characters) tale of three sisters with gorgeous voices. There's Sister (Lonette McKee), Sparkle (Irene Cara,Fame), and Delores (Dwan Smith), who team up with a couple of players (including a very young Philip Michael Thomas, pre-Miami Vice) to form a singing group. Because the men add little oomph to the outfit, the quintet becomes an all-girl trio and is renamed the redundant (and hysterical) Sister and the Sisters. But because this movie is calledSparkleand notSister, we know that Irene Cara's character is the one to watch. Cara is a joy to listen to when she unleashes her powerful pipes. And as the much put-upon Sister, McKee is convincing and earns the viewer's sympathy. Set in the 1950's, the movie tackles racism, sexism, jealousy, and both chemical and physical abuse. While it is overly dramatic and liberally serves up sloppy doses of soap opera clichés, the film also is highly watchable because of its over-the-top campiness.--Jae-Ha Kim Rerations < Sparkle >

Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. How you view this niche product from pianist John Tesh (an assortment of pop songs from date movies that Tesh has reworked as piano-based instrumentals) depends largely on how you regard the material he has selected.Pure Movies 2leans heavily on mass-audience two-hankie favorites: Lionel Richie's "Endless Love," Phil Collins's "Against All Odds," Michel Legrand's "Brian's Song" and "Summer of '42," and so on. The overall mood is soft and sentimental, and Tesh's playing and arranging regularly succeed at triggering the swift, surface-level emotional responses inherent in fast-acting movie music. Tesh works in both a solo mode and an ensemble setting, only occasionally goosing his pieces with swelling, emote-with-me strings ("Brian's Song," "Somewhere in Time"). Happily, his approach is generally low-key on most tracks, and he shines on pop-ensemble pieces such as "She's Like the Wind" (fromDirty Dancing) and "The Crying Game." The disc's best moment? The first track, "You'll Be in My Heart," where Tesh takes Collins's theme-setter from the animatedTarzanand retools it into a heart-racing, reach-for-the-stars gem. Two ballad-like vocal tracks are included: "When She Loved Me" (fromToy Story 2, sung by Richard Page), and the disc's lone Tesh original, "Heart of the Sunrise," featuring Christian vocalist Cindy Morgan.--Terry Wood Rerations < The John Tesh Project: Pure Movies 2 >

Based on Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme," Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic in New York's gritty East Village. Now the powerful musical marks its 10th year on stage by coming to the big screen, accompanied by RENT The Motion Picture Soundtrack, produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morissette). It's not that surprising thatRent, a successful musical with a strong youth following, would have transferred from the New York stage to film. Whatisremarkable is that the material has aged very well and that most of the original cast have made the trip to the silver screen. This is no small feat since nearly ten years have elapsed since the show's Off-Broadway debut and the film's release. When it opened in 1996, Jonathan Larson's rock musical based on neobohemian life in the gritty East Village felt a bit hackneyed at times; now,Rentfeels more like a Broadway fantasy about life on the edge, and that new element actually works in the show's favor. The two cast additions--Rosario Dawson (replacing Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi) and Tracie Thomas (replacing Fredi Walker as Joanne)--act well and with emotion, but aren't quite powerful enough. They are eclipsed by vets such as Anthony Rapp, Idina Menzel, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, and Taye Diggs, who of course had the chance to perfect their roles on stage and can also be heard on the original cast recording. It's a pleasure to hear these stalwarts New York performers strut their stuff again. This soundtrack will please the show's fans, and probably attract new ones.--Elisabeth Vincentelli Rerations < Rent (2005 Movie Soundtrack) >

Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. The firstSongcatcheralbum contained both traditional Appalachian folk ballads and modern songs inspired by the movie of the same name and performed by contemporary female singers, including Iris DeMent, Julie Miller, and Emmylou Harris. The engagingSongcatcher II, however, is a step back in time. The album's 17 recordings date back to the early 1960s folk-music boom, when long-forgotten singers like Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, and Almeda Riddle were rediscovered by a new generation of music lovers. They sang ancient English and Scottish ballads that had been brought over to America and passed down through the ages, bleak songs about love, infidelity, God, and murder. Boggs, recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, offers his bone-chilling version of "Oh Death"; Riddle, who lived her entire life in Greer's Ferry, Arkansas, sings the creepy "Babes in the Woods," in which two children get lost outdoors and die; Roscoe Holcomb, for whom the phrase "high, lonesome sound" was invented, is downright otherworldly as he accompanies himself on banjo on "Little Birdie." The four tracks by Doc Watson, including the lovely "Pretty Saro," come from his early Vanguard albums, which have long been accessible on compact disc, but most of these recordings haven't been available in years, if ever. Culled from Vanguard's extensive archives, they offer a tantalizing glimpse of the label's rich heritage.--David Hill Rerations < Songcatcher II: The Tradition That Inspired the Movie >

Warner Home Video(2010-06-01)
Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's reviewThe year: 1946. The event: Oakland's "Jazz at the Philharmonic." The music streaked into the unknown, daring listeners to grab hold and fly there, too. On stage was the creator of those new sounds: Charles "Yardbird" Parker. In the crowd was the 16-year-old who would someday bring Parker's extraordinary story to the screen: Clint Eastwood. "Americans don't have any original art except Western movies and jazz," observes Eastwood. Movie fans, of course, know that few heroes sit as tall in the saddles as Eastwood. Now the legendary America icon, whose Dirty Harry films have been praised for their jazz scores, ventures deeper into that other original American art. Eastwood produces and directs Bird, a film burnished with the magic of that 1946 concert encounter between legend and future legend and honored with an Academy Award for Best Sound in its spellbinding recreation of a man and his music. Like jazz itself, Bird rings with counterpoints and embellishments. Past and future overlap as the film explores Yardbird's soaring skill and destructive excesses. Clint Eastwood's moody, evocative direction and Forest Whitaker's strong, sensitive performance are the chief proponents to recommend an otherwise muted biopic of '40s jazz legend Charlie Parker, who fell victim to his chemical excesses and convinced the doctor who pronounced him dead that he was a good four decades older than he actually was. The film doesn't try to assign clear blame for Parker's demons, though the era's racism is addressed unflinchingly. Clearly a labor of love, Eastwood's movie structurally attempts to ape the angular music of bebop itself (there are flashbacks within flashbacks, which gets a little confusing), but doesn't quite capture the smolder of the period. Diane Venora registers strongly as Bird's wife, Chan, the woman who can't rescue Bird from the abyss into which he peers.--David Kronke Rerations < Bird >
