(Don't Bother)
『Mail has the look and feel of a television mini-series with five half-hour (actually closer to 20-minute) segments. Most of the movie is in medium shots or close ups, so it feels a little claustrophobic as well. The pacing is slow and the special effects range from rudimentary to just OK. The real problem is that the movie just isn't scary.

The title refers to how the protagonist psychic detective gets requests to exorcise ghosts-- by letter or e-mail. Apparently use of the telephone in Japan has become passé. His method of sending ghosts back to "Hades" is "The Holy Pistol of Kagutsuchi," which betrays the movie's comic book origin.

Actually, I learned a couple of things in watching this movie. First, ghosts aren't scary without a build-up and time spent to develop atmosphere. Because of each segment's short running time, the ghost is just dropped into the frame to go "Boo." Second, a high-tech gimmick of eradication--here the laughable "holy pistol" -- eliminates a sense of danger or suspense. If a ghost can be exorcised by just shooting it like some western bad man, any prospect of supernatural dread is lost.

The best segment is the first, in which the "shock" moment is the girl in the painting slowly opening its eyes. Creepy; but unfortunately, the action is telegraphed when the camera lingers too long on face before the eyes begin to open. The viewer has time to guess exactly what is going to happen. Nothing remotely frightening happens after that, and the story with the school children veers into deep and embarrassing sentimentality-- the ghosts even sing Auld Lang Syne. In fairness, the movie does contain what may be the screen's first haunted women's bathroom.

The DVD lacks an English language track option: the movie can only be watched in Japanese, albeit with easy-to-read English subtitles. Image quality is very good, maybe just a little too dark in some scenes. The movie is mildly letterboxed--much appreciated but here more an affectation than a necessity. Finally, the movie's running time (on DVD) is closer to 110 minutes--not the 150 minutes claimed.

For me, a major disappointment and a lesson that original language and letterboxing do not guarantee quality "Asian Horror."

(Chiaki is absolutely stunning in this movie)
『Chiaki Kuriyama is my favorite actress and I have all her movies. When I was watched this one, I was amazed. She plays a young girl Mikoto who aids a supernatural detective. It has five parts to it, and the ending is amazing. I recommend this one as a must see.』

(Mail - Sometimes the Dead Can't Die.)
『"Mail - Sometimes the Dead Can't Die."
I enjoyed this DVD as it gave a new&pleasing twist to the traditional "buddy private eyes" type genre. Takamasu Suga is impressive as dedicated, earnest "Psychic Detective" Reiji Akiba in his long black "Matrix" style clothing&his Holy Pistol as he seeks out lost souls troubling people&planet&despatches them safely to the other side. Chiaki Kuriyama (Go Go in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill", Chigusa in Kenji Fukasaku's "Battle Royale") is excellent as Mikoto, his attractive, spunky, young female sidekick-with-a-sad-secret, who contributes more to resolving cases than she gets credit for. Plot lines are good with six (not nine as it states on the sleeve) TV style stand alone episodes but with a continuing story-arc. Occasionally some elements might seem reminiscent of other J-horror offerings such as "Juon" or "Ringu", but others, such as the haunted public toilet, are entirely novel! However I felt a bit cheated towards the end because as soon as the "buddy" relationship has been attractively set up over the initial two episodes,&builds up intriguingly through two more, than it winds down over the final two, leaving me feeling that they had a format here that offered a lot of possibilities so why end it all so soon. There was the potential for this to be almost a Japanese "X-Files" type series, with the emphasis on spook rather than pseudo-science, especially as Reiji had been given the assignment of "ascending" 100 souls to heaven by his shadowy mentor before his mysteriously suppressed childhood memories can return. This all adds another intriguing layer to the primary story arc of the relationship between Reiji&Mikoto&also underlines the question of the brevity of the series. However I would certainly recommend this DVD to anyone with a liking for this type of sympathetic&entertaining "soft" J-horror genre.

(The Japanese CONSTANTINE)
『Mail is the Japanese CONSTANTINE. It is done as 5 seperate stories and is low budget. Reji exocises spirits using a golden pistol. Think more James Bond than religious. The special effects are more fitting for a TV series, and watching it, I think it could have been done better as anime. Mikoto, the assistant, is recognizable from Kill Bill 1. The acting is weak, but the story idea is sound. Buy it used or you'll be disappointed.』
『Detective Akiba a private investigator specializing in supernatural phenomenon mades a living freeing people from the troublesome ghosts that haunt them. In fact he receives messages through the Mail from spirits who are unable to detach themselves from their former earthly existence. With psychic powers and a custom-made pistol known as a Kagutsuchi (this is the name for the Japanese god of fire) Akiba seeks them out and sets them back on the cycle of death and re-birth. Through these so-called ascensions he facilitates the transmigration of the soul. During a standard call one day he meets Mikoto a quixotic young girl who takes a sudden interest in him and insists on becoming his assistant. Mikoto's sudden appearance in his life seems to accelerate his own date with destiny leading to a confrontation with his past and a discovery that puts his career path into perspective. As the tally of exorcised spirits climbs Akiba's forgotten past gradually begins to return to him in glimpses. But it is with the 100th ascension that his memory is to become fully unlocked. Only then will he recall why he possesses the spirit pistol Kagutsuchi or why he has suppressed certain incidents fro his childhood. Perhaps it will even shed some light on this relationship with Mikoto. The shroud of mystery that surrounds Akiba gradually unravels through nine ghostly chapters concluding with a romantic twist. (Outstanding cast in superb chiller.)
『John Saxon teams up with talented beauty Lynda Day George to create a top
class horror thriller full of atmosphere, plot twists and entertainment.
Director Herb Freed was clearly aiming at a drive in/horror fan audience
and he succeeds in delivering a quality film rich in plot and characters.
Strongly recommended as a BUY NOW DVD , ignore the ignorant bias comments.』

(Beyond stupid.)
『Beyond Evil (Herb Freed, 1980)
Wow-- what a thoroughly awful movie this is. It's got some interesting ideas, but they are completely buried under an awful script, bad acting, and some of the worst special effects imaginable-- this is another of those no-budget Z-grade pics where green beams actually shoot out of the bad guy's eyes. Yes, literally. It should be some sort of rule that green beams shooting out of the bad guy's eyes means you're guaranteed an awful movie. On top of that, you can pile bad new age-y philosophical crap, some really bad stuntwork, and, oh, did I mention the bad acting and awful script already? *

(Beyond boring - way, way beyond boring)
『The only thing scary about Beyond Evil is the fact that one professional reviewer called it"shamelessly bloodthirsty"at the time of its release. The film was reportedly a big hit at drive-ins in 1980; this does a lot to explain why the drive-in movie business crashed and burned in the early 1980s, I think. The plot summary sounds unoriginal but promising: newlyweds move into a haunted house and have to fight to stay alive. Writer and director Herb Freed throws in a dash of witchcraft on the side, but this cinematic concoction turns out as thin and bland as tap water. Awful special effects don't help, nor does the ridiculous darkness of the print. Freed apparently believed that the secret of making a good horror/suspense movie was to keep the audience in the dark at all times - literally; if the audience can't actually see anything that is going on, perhaps this will frighten them. Let me tell you - staring at a black screen for about two-thirds of a movie is nothing but annoying. Every so often, you can almost make something out, but on these occasions the director seems to be switching between blue and green filters. There is some actual light during a few daytime scenes, but even the sunshine has a dark quality to it here.

Beyond Evil is set on some island somewhere, apparently in the South Pacific. Larry (John Saxon) and his new wife Barbara (Lynda Day George) have just arrived for an extended stay. Larry has come to oversee a big building project, working for this guy Del that Barbara apparently used to date. There is some kind of subplot about under-the-table deals among a couple of businessmen at play here, but just forget about that - the writer certainly did. Anyway, good old Del gets Larry and Barbara set up in a wonderful old house; no one has lived in the house for a century because it is said to be haunted, but of course John Saxon has fought Bruce Lee and thus finds nothing to fear in the ghost department. It goes without saying that the house is, indeed, haunted. Barbara is annoying enough as it is, but when the ghost starts trying to get into her head she becomes painfully unbearable.

I might have given this movie two stars, but the special effects made sure that didn't happen. Let's just say that Beyond Evil boasts some of the cheesiest, most pathetic special effects I've ever seen. If you like watching a black screen, jump at the chance to see awful special effects, and have a neurotic craving for weak plots involving completely unlikable characters, Beyond Evil is calling your name. If not, you'll find this movie utterly annoying and tiresome.』

(Bored)
『While your watching the movie, just keep repeating to yourself: I will be bored, I will be bored.』

(More like a Static figure)
『This is one of the WORST figures that i've ever gotten in my entire life!!! She would be better as a Static or PVC figure. She stands akwardly on her over-sized mikey mouse feet.』

(Perfect :o))
『I love my Kairi figure. Her face is beautiful and i love her outfit. Her changable hands come out easily. She is pretty flexible. But when I got it in the mail the box was banged up and also the box she came in. but that was probably just the shipper but no biggie. The figure itself wasn't damaged. I dont think i ordered it from this seller.』

『Very, very durable. You can bend it and pose it to do pretty much whatever you want. It looks very much like the Reno in Advent Children and is a really good size. Although their plastic, his shirt and coat are flexible and bend to how you pose it, making it look super cool no matter what he does.』

(This toy radiates cool.)
『While Reno was a bad guy in the FF series, you must like him at least a little because his attitude and the way he dresses. This figure captures perfectly and personifies Reno as he was meant to be captured. The figure looks great alongside my other FF figures. But Reno stands out because out of the rest of them, he's not trying to be a hero, he's just doing his job. The figure comes with other hand attachments for posing, which I think is great. Figure is very poseable, he has joints in everything but his fingers. Great for fans of the series that can appreciate Reno for the villian he plays, but also the style and attitude he has.』

(Looks great alongside the other figures in the movie that I have.)
『I wanted a couple more figures besides Cloud on his Fennir Motorcycle. So I picked Reno and I wanted him to be sitting on Kadaj's motorcycle; which I realized would be impossible since the said motorcycle was too small.
I think Reno looks terrific and very solid and sturdy; love the face too, it is very smooth and clear.

『Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Vol. 2 Reno Action Figure. A Square Enix Japanese import! The long awaited second series of FINAL FANTASY ADVENT CHILDREN Play Arts action figures is finally here! 『I ordered this item and another action figure Zack Fair, from this seller, and I kept getting emails that my order couldn't be completed. The weird thing is, I ordered a Cloud action figure from another seller and the order went through.』

(Very Detailed Figure since the Mario Family figures)
『This figure is very detailed, and almost realistic, I have not played around with the figure and still in it's packaging, so I don't know about the poseability, but I take it from the other reviews here, that it is indeed poseable. This figure is the most detailed figure that I have seen since the "Mario Family" figures, except the "Mario Family" figures are not poseable. This figure is also pretty good size as well, unlike most figures which are usually like 1/2" to maybe 2" in size, this one makes all them looks incredibly small.』

(Aerith)
『This figure is very posable with optional hands and her trademark staff. This is a very well done representation of the character from FF VII. The detail is excellent.』

『This was a very well made figure. It was beautifully made and I liked how I posed it.

I'd say if you're a Final Fantasy VII fan who collects these kind of things, they you should buy this.』

『For the first time ever, the characters based on the Playstation game likeness of Final Fantasy VII have been made into highly articulated Play Arts Action Figures! Collect all three characters: CLOUD STRIFE comes equipped with his famous BUSTER SWORD. TIFA LOCKHART is attired in a mini-skirt, with all details accurate right down to her dolphin tail hairstyle. AERITH GAINSBOROUGH is in a soft pvc dress, to allow for poseability, and comes with her trademark Staff. Sculpted under the supervision of original character designer Tetsuya Nomura, all three figures are highly poseable, with at least 20 points of articulation, and stand approximately 8 tall.』

(Good book!)
『The Book of Formation or the Sepher Yetzirah, is a deep book pertaining to the Kabbalah. The Kabbalah is such a spiritual book dealing with the hidden elements of Torah. The Book of Formation details the creation of the Most High and man's connection with Him. I recommend this book for anyone who studies the Kabbalah. I got mines now its you to get your own Sepher Yetzirah.』
『The Sepher Yetzirah, or Book of Formation, although very short, is probably the most important of the Kabalistic texts. Its secrets were passed on in the Hebrew oral tradition until it was written down in the 2nd century B.C.E. It lays out the principles of Kabalistic cosmology and the Tree of Life, how humankind (the microcosm) reflects the Divine (the macrocosm). It also sets forth the Hebrew doctrine of Logos– the creation of the world in numbers, letters, and sound. As such, it is a seminal text for all serious magicians.

Stenring has made a word-for-word translation from several texts, choosing only those parts which he believed to be authentic. He reveals the text’s secrets in his diagrams, tables, and extensive notes. His "Master Key to the Theoretical and Practical Kabala" is a diagram of the correspondences between the English and Hebrew alphabets and is not found in other translations of the Sepher Yetzirah. Also unique in this translation is Stenring’s assignment of certain tarot cards to the paths on the Tree of Life. Several authors have done this before, but Stenring asserts that he arrived at his correspondences on his own. The introduction by Waite surveys the historical background of the Sepher Yetzirah translations and the import of thisfoundational Kabbalistic text.』

(Beautiful and useful book)
『I was fortunate to receive a guided tour of the Akihabara district of Tokyo in 2008. This book exactly captures the wonderful spirit that I remember so well. And, it contains a huge amount of information. And is beautifully drawn and produced. As it says: "By the otaku, for the otaku."』

(An excellent resource that features an informative and fun manga storyline and more!)
『There are plenty of books in English for those interested in traveling to Japan but for people who are interested in visiting the city of Akihabara (the electric city in Tokyo known for its otaku-driven stores from maid cafes, anime figurines, dojinshi, cosplay, video games, etc.), finding a resource in English with detailed information is not that easy.

Also, for many travel books, there is always your standard mention of the city but what about a book on Akihabara written by otaku for otaku's?

Well, "THE AKIBA: A Manga Guide to Akihabara" is not only an excellent resource, it's one of the most enjoyable books from Japan distributed in the US courtesy of Kodansha America, that I really just am impressed by it's information but also how it's written in a way to not only keep the reader interested, intrigued but definitely a book that can encourage travel to the city. It's that fun!

The book is broken into two parts. The first part is the manga and the second part is the actual guide to Akihabara.

The manga is a very enjoyable storyline about a couple in Tokyo. Hiroshi and Yoko. One day, Hiroshi said that he will be stopping in Akiba (short for Akihabara) after work. The next morning, Yoko starts to worry because not only has her boyfriend not come back from work, she finds out that he stopped working over a month ago. This is not like him and she starts to worry.

She notices that he left behind his cell phone and also received a text message from a person named Okada who said that he will meet him at Raji-kan in front of Ayanami. Who is Okada? What is Raji-kan? Why is he going to Akihabara?

This leads the trendy Yoko to the city of Akihabara. A person who really never looked at the city all that much but has heard about the culture from newspapers and magazines.

This leads Yoko to the Raji-kan (or Radio Hall) building. The interesting part of this manga is that it also shows actual pictures (in grayscale) of various things from Akihabara. The magazines that are passed out by women in cosplay to the stores in buildings that Yoko is visiting. Also, some maps as well of where things are located.

So, while searching for her boyfriend, she runs into Okada-san, a rental display case manager (for figurines) at a hobby shop but is also a hardcore otaku (and cosplayer) who loves the way of life in Akihabara.

Okada gives her information of why he was to meet Hiroshi but Yoko through running around Akihabara for the day, really doesn't understand Akihabara all that much and asks Okada for his help. The two go on a journey to find Hiroshi and Yoko begins to understand that her boyfriend is not what she thought he would be. That despite his cool look, he is an otaku that frequents Akihabara quite a bit.

Through their adventures, will Yoko accept the otaku lifestyle and the way things are in Akihabara? Will she find Hiroshi? Also, does Okada start to have feelings for Yoko (or the sense of having a woman by his side in Akihabara). You'll have to read to find out!

The manga was just so fun to read and I just found it so informative of the various shops featured, that I was very happy to see manga used as a educational book (even explaining a little of the history of how Akihabara became the way it is) to an informative reference book with maps and information on shops featured in the actual manga storyline.

Without spoiling the storyline, all I can say is that the adventures of Yoko and Okada in their search for Hiroshi was very enjoyable and I have no doubt in my mind, those who are interested in Akihabara will learn from this manga, and of course, this book in general.

The second part of the book features the "Shop&Restaurant Guide to Akiba" and this section is in full color. Not only do you get the history of the Akiba but nearly 30-pages of detailed information on maid cafes, large retail stores, restaurants, PC stores, figures, games, dojin-shi, audio equipment, cosplay, arcades and other stores.

With the book arranged by Otaba (Otaba is a social networking service community of the otaku, by the otaku and for the otaku), I would imagine that the shops selected are the best in Akiba and what is recommended. So, you get a photo, information and also the address, phone number and store or shop hours as well.

The book is about 8.5 x 10, so the book is large and not small. The manga art was pretty cool and the whole "Genshiken"-like (title of a popular anime series about otaku, some who are cool otaku and a girlfriend who is more trendy but loves her boyfriend even though he is an otaku) storyline definitely made me interested.

But it's just the overall concept and how well it was executed in order for a reader not to be just drawn in by the storyline but to see photos and maps incorporated to the manga storyline that made it even better.

And of course, the shop and restaurant guide is just the icing in the cake when it comes to this book. Very informative and it truly is a well-done reference book for the type of shops and restaurants that would attract otaku.

I've owned many Japanese travel books and even have interactive CD's and audio books that are educational but "THE AKIBA: A Manga Guide to Akihabara" is definitely one of the best out there! Granted, it focuses primarily on Akihabara but for many otaku, that's the only city that they probably want to focus on and spend their hard earned money on.

I wouldn't be surprised if people bought two copies, one to keep at home as a reference and one to keep with themselves while visiting the various shops and restaurants in Akihabara.

All in all, an excellent reference with an enjoyable manga storyline that I highly recommend!』

『The Akihabara district (Akiba) in Tokyo, once known as the spot for discount electronics stores, has become a veritable theme park of Japanese pop culture. With shops of all kinds, gaming centers, clubs, bars, and restaurants packed into an area of just 700 square meters, the Akiba can be a daunting place to navigate. Now, however, this clever new guidebook presents the wonderfully eccentric appeal of the district in an easy-to-understand and entertaining format--a fusion of manga and practical travel information that will prove invaluable to the foreign visitor.
Two-thirds of The Akiba is made up of a manga story in which 20-year-old Yoko searches for her boyfriend, who has gone missing in Akihabara. As Yoko winds her way through the Akiba looking for clues to Hiroshi's whereabouts, she meets up with his friend, Okada-san, and discovers the truth about Hiroshi: he is actually an otaku (an obsessed manga and anime fan).
The remaining portion of the volume is a complete guide offering full-color photographs, detailed maps and travel information and listings of the stores and other locations mentioned in the story. Throughout the book, the reader learns about the development of Akihabara, which evolved from Tokyo's electronics center to the place to go for personal computers, video games, animation and manga--into its most recent incarnation as the hub of street music. The book also highlights the role that Akihabara has played in the internationalization of Japanese pop culture.』

(Langston Hughes gets 5 stars for this!!)
『The life of poverty and discrimination is all about Simple, the character in Simple's Uncle Sam. He goes through everything and tells about it in his short stories. From his ideas for a Negro President to his ideas for an ugly contest instead of a beauty contest, this man's mind comes alive with explicit detail, description, and opinion.』
『Langston Hughes's most beloved character comes back to life in this extraordinary collection

Langston Hughes is best known as a poet, but he was also a prolific writer of theater, autobiography, and fiction. None of his creations won the hearts and minds of his readers as did Jesse B. Semple, better known as "Simple." Simple speaks as an Everyman for African Americans in Uncle Sam's America. With great wit, he expounds on topics as varied as women, Gospel music, and sports heroes--but always keeps one foot planted in the realm of politics and race. In recent years, readers have been able to appreciate Simple's situational humor as well as his poignant questions about social injustice inThe Best of SimpleandThe Return of Simple. Now they can, once again, enjoy the last of Hughes's original Simple books.

(Underwhelming and banal)
『There's no question that"Chushingura"is perfect material for an opera. This opera, though, isn't it. Despite having an excellent libretto by novelist Shimada Masahiko, the music never really achieves the kind of emotional velocity that even the best film scores can reach. And while there is a mixture of East and West present here, it's more like a collision than a blend, with the two traditions sitting uneasily side by side instead of intermingling and enriching each other. For a story that's supposed to be full of drama, the music is curiously flat and uninvolving; there isn't a single memorable theme, or a"tingle moment"that convinces you that you *need* to keep listening. It's three hours long, and it's hard to find five minutes of truly compelling work in it. A shame.』
『Chushingura is the Japanese equivalent of the Alamo. It's been akabukiplay and abunraku(puppet) play. There are five movie versions. The story, all of it true, is about a young prince, Asano Takumi-no-Kami, who, in 1701, is forced to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) after attacking mean-spirited Lord Kiri in the Shogun's castle. In December 1702, 47 of Lord Asano'sronin(masterless samurai) attack Lord Kiri's castle in a dawn raid, killing, to a man, an army of hired thugs and forcing Lord Kiri to commitseppuku. The 47 in turn are ordered by the Shogun to commitseppukuthemselves. The large, traditional Japanese themes--fealty to one's lord, duty to one's family, and above all personal honor--are inChushingura. The music is Western and traditional--more Puccini than Takemitsu--and this live recording radiates with superb performances and excellent recorded sound. It's also probably a masterpiece.--Paul Cook
