(Am I doing something wrong?) 『I just bought this a couple of weeks ago, and I've tried cooking jasmine rice two times. Both times, the rice came out pasty and unpleasant. What's wrong here? If I'm doing something wrong, I'd appreciate the advice and I'll update my rating if that is possible.』
(I love rice, but I love breathing, too.) 『After reading all the great reviews here I was looking forward to this rice cooker, which I chose because it has a titanium bowl rather than an aluminum or teflon-coated one, hoping to avoid the toxic properties of those.
I washed the parts thoroughly as I usually do with new cookware. Yet I can't believe how toxic the fumes were that emerged from this thing. It's hours later and I can still taste them and feel them in my lungs. Thinking I must be nuts, since I saw no mention of this in the reviews, I did a Google key-word search and found several Amazon reviewers of the 10-cup model of this machine who had complained of the same thing.
It cooked a nice batch of rice, to be sure, and maybe I'm among a few who are hyper-sensitive to such things, but there's no denying the odor, which consisted of plastic and something unknown.
It's really too bad, as this machine has everything else going for it. I'll give it two stars because it cooks well, and maybe others can live with this "by-product", but I wouldn't say that I recommend it.』
(Great rice!) 『I am a big rice eater. I like to mix rice with most of my meals. It was always a pain to cook the rice as I had to keep checking on the progress so as not to scorch the rice . I have only had this cooker for a week (the reason for the 4 star rating). So far this is a dream come true! It is so easy to put everything in the cooker and let it do the rest. It really is idiot proof. The removable inside bowl (which is very sturdy and non-stick) has all the correct levels of water to add for each type of rice. Even the little measuring cup is just right. The different kinds of rice I have tried in my one week testing have all cooked so much better than I was able to cook on the stove. It is a little pricey for occasional rice preparation but for the people like me that always likes to have rice on hand, it is great! I would absolutely recommend this product. (I have not tried the bread baking capability yet and probably will not).』

I've made both white rice and brown rice with it. 99% of the rice is cooked perfectly. The non-stick bowl makes it a breeze to clean. Apparently this little machine also bakes bread. However it is NOT a bread maker. You have to prepare the dough separately and then the Sanyo bakes it. This is probably practical for those who don't mind kneading dough, or buy frozen dough, and want small loaves of bread. I have not test the bread baking feature.

However, I give it one star for design on the drip tray. The tray has nothing to stop it from sliding out, and slide out it will, with the slightest movement. My drip tray, made of brittle plastic, slid out the second time I used the griddle and shattered on our tile kitchen floor. Why, Presto's engineer's could not have designed a safety notch or latch on this part is beyond me. Then again the unit is made (and probably designed) in China, and I doubt that Chinese designers are big griddles users. 1 Star for design.』
(You get what you pay for!) 『I bought this griddle for yakiniku, which is a great way to entertain guests, but I have found that I have been using it far more than anticipated.
Pros:
It's awesome to have a griddle in the kitchen. First and foremost, it's great being able to make more than one or two pancakes at a time. If you want to serve someone up a short stack, there is a lot of waiting using only two pans, but with this, you can crank out three good size cakes at the same time. Also, frying eggs and warming meat at the same time has saved me a lot of time in the mornings.
It's easy to clean. If you read the manual carefully, it suggests seasoning before use. This ensures a light coat of oil stays on it while it's being used. I've done this and NOTHING has stuck to the surface. I also give it a thorough scrub with either a dry paper towel or a wet one held with chopsticks after each use and it stays very clean.
It gets hot fast! Way faster than my range top and a pan, which also saves me time in the morning. This is mostly due to the light construction, but this can also contribute to un-even heating, which I have not yet had a problem with, although others have.
Its just more fun. Maybe this is helping me live out some long-lost short-order cook fantasies? = )
Cons:
As other reviewers have noted, it slides around a bit. I find myself lifting it up a bit on one side to both keep it in place and also to give the spatula better odds of sliding under an egg without breaking it. This is not a deal-breaking compensation, but rubber feet would have been nice here.
It tends to get pretty hot. The manual comes with cooking temps, but I found most of them to be a little high. Cooking a little more cool has helped things out for me. Again, this may be what has attributed to others' problems.
The bottom line here is that you get what you pay for. This is one of the cheaper models on the market, so I think it would be a little unrealistic to assume that the bargain model would deliver a top-of-the-line performance. I have had zero problems with mine so far, but I recognize that it clearly has some room for improvements. Until I want to shell out more than $30 for a small kitchen appliance, I'll be quite happy with this product.』

I'll also have to agree with another review that the griddle itself is very slippery on a smooth counter-top surface, so around kids/pets you might want to be cautious. The non-stick surface appears to be fine(treated initially as per manual)with the cool-edge and drip tray working as advertised which allows for an easy clean-up.』

She models in an assortment of colorful bikinis as well as in nothing. An audio track consisting of mellow rhythms and a female vocalist singing mostly in French (there's some English too) plays from beginning to end. The shoot is tastefully done, the vibrant colors of Shu Qi's swimsuits, her lithe form in various poses, and the sparkling sea captivating the eye.
The nudity is Playboy-mild; there are some nice shots of her cute rear and countless more of her breasts. You'll also catch glimpses here and there of her well-trimmed bush, and in chapter 6 you'll be pleasantly surprised to get a quick but close look at her tight nether lips as she does a pirouette (keep your finger on the pause button). As usual she wears a demure expression, though a subtle look of naughtiness deliciously replaces it from time to time.
Solid camerawork brings out the glamour girl's loveliness, but the excessive jumps from scene to scene can be annoying. The full-frame picture is generally good, affording a rich color palette as mentioned earlier and fine detail in close-up shots. Long shots tend to be less clear. Some of the scenes were filmed indoors, where soft images are the norm, but the effect is pleasing. The company's logo, the letter "W" for Wide Sight Entertainment, appears fixed on the upper left-hand side of the screen and cannot be removed. I didn't consider this a major distraction, though finicky viewers might. There are two audio options: 5.1 and 2.0. I used the latter for playback on a pair of tower speakers: the stereo sound is clear but lacks presence and dynamics.
For fewer scene cuts and more lingering shots of Shu Qi, you might want to check out Shu Qi: Dreaming Naked Show; in that video she also appears sexier and more kittenish. As for picture quality, however, this title trounces it. The French soundtrack doesn't befit the visual context too well, but this is not a major setback. Despite the shortcomings, True Woman delivers plenty of eye candy and should please most oglers of beautiful women. 3.5 stars.』

I've been buying the various Simply Asia products at my local Dollar General Store at a really cheap price and I'm certainly pleased with the product(s). This particular one happens to be my favorite but they're all very good.
I'm a scratch cook, preparing supper for my wife and myself every day, (I'm retired, she still works full-time), so I don't usually buy many microwave food products. However, I have fatigued of eating leftovers for lunch every day and these products have turned out to be the perfect solution. I like them much better than frozen dinners in terms of flavor and convenience. I've also found them much more savory than similar and comparable microwave dishes.
For me, the bottom line is flavor and, secondarily, heartiness -- I don't want to be hungry again fifteen minutes after eating lunch. This dish goes into the microwave following a minimum of preparation fuss (all you need is a little water -- everything else is included) and is finished from beginning to end in just minutes. I cannot say enough about the good flavor, and the portion size is fully adequate for me which is a rare occurrence in my past experience with such products since I weigh 265 pounds.
If you have any specific concerns about nutrition or ingredients, you can check those issues on the product description; however, I did wish to let others know how convenient and how tasty these Simply Asia products really are.

He is cast in an extremely negative light as somebody who does just what is in his own best interest, with no respect for others, or even his own legacy. Many of his "accomplishments" are passed off as the works of others. (For example, the victory in the Chinese civil war is predominantly seen as a result of bad moves by the nationalists, often due to external factors.) This overly negative view, however, does serve to paint a picture of Mao as a person, rather than the deity that arises in Maoist propaganda. Unlike fascists of his era, Mao was able to die in is sleep. Also, unlike other major communist countries, China's communist government still remains in place today. Thus, the balanced view of Mao still remains a great challenge. This book may swing the pendulum a little too far to the negative, but remains an important step in understanding an important historical figure. In spite of the book's length, I did find it lacking in Mao's early history. He seemed to suddenly arrive in a key leadership position in the early communist party, seemingly without any strong qualifications. From the book, it is unclear why people would have such song support for a seemingly unqualified schemer.』

(Glad I Read This) 『Simply amazing. This book is a masterpiece of research combined with terrific storytelling.
After reading several reviews which basically call this "fiction," I was hesitant to buy it. I gave it a second look after Dennis Prager praised it on his radio show, and I am so glad I did. Here's my take on it: Although the authors leave you with no doubt they find Mao disgusting, I don't believe, like many do, that they are making these horrors up. You see, I have already studied the Maoist culture of Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge (heck, I've been there). What was done by Pol Pot to Cambodia was pretty much a distilled version of what Mao did to China, condensing 30 or so years into 4. The Khmer Rouge was overthrown, and the evidence of their ghoulish murderous regime and devastating social experiment was exposed for all the world to see. However, in China, the long-dead tell no tales. Out of sight, out of mind, out of the historical record. This is real, people. These things really do happen - yes, even today.
Some of the authors' assertions are speculative and too easily claim knowledge of Mao's mind and motives. But all this just inspires me to make further inquiry. Mao was so interesting, and despite its negative pitch I can see through this biography the admirable qualities he exploited to build his cult of personality.
This book is long, but I never once got bored throughout all 616 of the "reading" pages [the book includes at the end almost 200 pages of notes, sources, and lists of interviewees, surely to counter the many who doubt its veracity]. To be honest, I'm kind of sad I'm finished with it, and not least of the many reasons why is the absolutely top-notch cover design by Peter Mendelsund. It's lovely to look at and hold, the paper quality and typography are excellent, and the book will not fall apart during the considerable time it may take to read it, which I'm glad I took the time to do.』

Q:From idea to finished book, how long didMao: The Unknown Storytake to research and write? A:Over a decade.
Q:What was your writing process like? How did you two collaborate on this project? A:The research shook itself out by language. Jung did all the Chinese-language research, and Jon did the other languages, of which Russian was the most important, as Mao had a long-term intimate relationship with Stalin. After our research trips around the world, we would work in our separate studies in London. We would then rendezvous at lunch to exchange discoveries.
Q:Do you have any thoughts about how the book is, or will be received in China? Did that play a part in your writing of the book? A:The book is banned in China, because the current Communist regime is fiercely perpetuating the myth of Mao. Today Mao's portrait and his corpse still dominate Tiananmen Square in the heart of Beijing, and the regime declares itself to be Mao's heir. The government blocked the distribution of an issue ofThe Far Eastern Economic Review, and told the magazine's owners, Dow Jones, that this was because that issue contained a review of our book. The regime also tore the review of our book out ofThe Economistmagazine that was going to (very restricted) newsstands. We are not surprised that the book is banned. The regime's attitude had no influence on how we wrote the book. We hope many copies will find their way into China.
Q:What is the one thing you hope readers get from your book? A:Mao was responsible for the deaths of well over 70 million Chinese in peacetime, and he was bent on dominating the world. As China is today emerging as an economic and military power, the world can never regard it as a benign force unless Beijing rejects Mao and all his legacies. We hope our book will help push China in this direction by telling the truth about Mao.

It's relatively small and lightweight, with a story serious enough for determined reading but still plot-driven for easy pick-up. A European journalist lived with a middle-class Afghan bookseller for one year. His family is unusual. He has two wives, but shows obvious preference for the second, younger wife. He is an intellectual who loves books and seeks a more progressive, developed post-Taliban Afghanistan--but rules his family with an iron fist. He is not a likable character. Sultan Khan takes his sons out of school so they can work in his shops. He could easily afford to hire a worker, but he trusts no one outside his immediate family. To those he does hire, he pays poorly and expects a lot. When one worker steals from him, the true colors of Sultan Khan come through.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read that I recommend for men and women regardless of interest in South Asia or Afghan culture. At its heart, this is a story about a family coping with internal and external tumult. Love him or hate him, the Sultan Khan character is an admirable figure in many parts of the world.』

(Men suffer, too) 『Seierstad is a good writer. As much as it is possible for someone of a western culture to try to live in a Muslim culture, and then report on it as objectively as possible, I think she did a very good job. Seierstad lived for a time in an Afghani family, where she observed firsthand the lives of the men and women of the family and environs. She was privy to some of their innermost thoughts--at least as far as she knew. Women are women universally, and it broke my heart to read about Afghani women of intellect, ambition, and aspiration whose lives are basically wasted--by their own reported assessment--in a life of toil, hardship, dirt, boredom, and tyranny.
Equally distressing are the men's stories, which describe their comparatively intense hopelessness, and anger over their form of enslavement due to their birth hierarchy or other cultural dictates. This book revealed to me how on any scale--national or familial-- tyranny, force and coercion is deadly to growth, innovation, productivity, health and happiness.
Seeing the dismal existence of so many in Afghanistan makes me value my freedom, and our system of law and order in a civil society, and furthers my inquiry about what makes a society great? What fosters innovation, and creativity? In which cultures are the greatest number of people fulfilled while pursuing their happiness? These are questions fundamental to humanity, and by lifting the veil of the unfamiliar for the rest of us, Seierstad greatly contributes to the debate by showing graphically how life really is for those who don't enjoy our freedom. 』
(Small Minded and Evil Men) 『At first the somewhat arcane figures of speech and the obviously translated from another language way the book reads, put me off. Don't let it. The story is a good one albeit infuriating and sad.
Asne Seierstad gives us a look into the the Afghan world of high-handed cruel men who rule their selfish worlds with disdain and hatred for everyone except themselves.
Like many abused women, Afghan women make do with the lot they've got and then sadly they also turn on one another with the same disregard that has been shown to them.
This is a book that allows you into the inner workings of family life in Kabul by way of a family run by Sultan Khan, the bookseller. He loves books because they too serve him; they make him money and gain him a good reputation in the community. Even his book selling though, does not make him a lover of education and his children are forced to work long hours at his book stalls in lieu of school.
It is important that history be recorded so that we are not ignorant of this vile religion. It is a very well written book about a very small minded and evil man and his poor family who has to endure him.』
(Worth the read.) 『I'm not unhappy to have read this book; it gave me some insight into a part of the world that I would otherwise know little about. But it is depressing in the extreme, and I suspect that it is one book I may never re-read. Further, in spite of the author's best efforts (wearing a burka, living as much as possible like an Afghan woman), it must be kept in mind that her presense, while never referred to in the book after the first chapter or two (the book is written as if the author was an omniscient but invisible spirit watching the family from their midst, aware of their inmost thoughts and concerns but having absolutely no effect upon them) could not HELP but affect them.
