I have grilled pork chops, chicken breasts, and fish without any problem. I take care of the smoke by grilling directly under or near the fan for my stove, even though there is not much smoke. The grill and grease pan clean up very easily. I especially love the variable thermostat. The only thing that I wish this grill had was some sort of glass cover to help hold in some extra moisture (like when grilling pork chops).』
(Zojirushi Electric Grill) 『This is a nice, small grill that will easily accommodate the needs of someone who cooks for 1 to 4 people, depending on how large the items being grilled are. I managed to get three nice sized rib eyes on it at one time. I cooked the steaks on hi for the entire cooking time and was rewarded with great looking grill marks on both sides. I set the unit on the stove so I could utilize the vent hood if there was a lot of smoking. Surprisingly there wasn't. Judging from the grill marks, the grill heats evenly, and the nonstick cooking surface is great. The grill plate is sturdy and has a little weight to it. It's not flimsy or cheap looking like some of the other grills available. The unit is more expensive than the others of a comparable size, but I think it is a worthwhile purchase.
I have a grill pan that works pretty good, but once the food is turned the bottom of the food sort of steams and the grill marks are not as good. The advantage of this grill is that the grill plate has holes in it that allows the juices from the food to go into the drip pan so you get more of a grilling effect.
If the drip pan is lined with foil or if just enough water is placed in it to cover the bottom, clean up is a breeze. The nonstick surface of the grill is easy to clean.
I have been using the grill with recipes from Stephen Raichlen's book, Indoor Grilling. I made the chicken paillards with virgin sauce last night and they were really good. I also used the grill on the hi setting to grill the chicken breasts. They cooked really fast and again had really good grill marks on them.
I have also made kebabs on the grill but found that works best if a sheet of foil is placed over the top of kebabs so that the top and sides can be exposed to more heat. It's also good to leave a tiny bit of space between the food on the kebabs to ensure even cooking.
I think this is a great product, and I recommend it and would purchase it again.』
(Impressive) 『We bought this appliance to use while the BBQ area of our Maui condo was being renovated. Condo rules would not allow us to have a BBQ on our lanai (deck). Yet sitting on our lanai, grilling everything from Mahi-Mahi to rack of lamb on this Zorjirushi grill has benn a pleasure. I was not sure that the grill would do a decent job on the rack of lamb, but it cooked it perfectly in the same time that I would normally use on the outdoor BBQ. Very little smoke and just a little splatter (mist) from fatty foods. Very easy clean up. i have also used it to grill onions, peppers, pineapple and asperagus with complete success. We will continue to use this little gem on our lanai even when the outdoor BBQs are working again. It is perfect for sate or orther skewered foods. Quite fun actually.』
(excellent grill) 『I wanted a grill for indoors since it snows here and is hard to be outside in the winter time. This grill is it.
For everyone that complained that it is too heavy, smokey, too small, and doesn't heat up fast enough.... well guess what? It's lighter than a full blown outdoor grill/smoker and is much easier to clean. It is smokey because you're grilling food!! And its small... well, get two!! it's only $75. And, last time I checked, it takes at least 5 minutes to heat up a gas grill to get it hot and ready for good steak...and charcoal, even longer! It isn't slow by any means. You are just impatient. I had to turn this thing down to prevent it from scorching my steak. Also, you can put foil over your food to prevent splatter and to cook the food faster. I used it for steak, buffalo, and chicken. This grill is great. I lined the drip pan with Aluminum foil and now its easy to clean. Just rinse off and wipe the nonstick grill, wipe off the handles, and throw away the foil. That's it.
You can't beat the price...and it's better than going outside when it's -20 F.

(The Best Indoor Grill) 『The research I did on these type of grills paid off! I have had other brands in the past that didnt hold up, this is the second one I purchased. I bought one a year ago and was very pleased with the quick, easy disassembly for cleaning. It is well made and durable, I have used it for a year and have been very happy with it. I bought this one for my daughter.』 『Ideal for grilling steaks, chicken, fish, burgers, and vegetables indoors, this 1300-watt countertop appliance has a big, family-size grill surface of 12-1/2 by 9-1/4 inches coated with nonstick for low-fat cooking and easy cleaning. A variable heat control provides precise cooking temperatures, and the grill's handles and stylish, dark-gray plastic base stay cool during operation for safety. Another safety feature prevents the heat control, which provides power to the appliance, from being inserted unless the metal drip tray and cooking grid are in place and prevents the grid from being removed during operation. The appliance disassembles easily for cleaning, and the drip tray is dishwasher-safe. Overall, the unit measures 20-3/4 inches wide, 6-1/8 inches high, and 14 inches deep.--Fred Brack』 『Zojirushi Indoor Electric Grill - Zojirushi EBCC15』

I read where one person used it so often the non stick surface began to wear. I have had no problem but I don't put it in the dishwasher. I read that you shouldn't use spray on non stick surfaces so I have stopped that and now use a margarine stick.』
(Great example of simple design that performs flawlessly) 『This is the best little griddle! I bought it for my husband, who makes his own "hearty" breakfast of fried eggs, hash browns, and sausage or bacon several times a week. It's the perfect size for all that. It cleans up easily and is small enough to leave out. Our countertop is black, so the griddle fades right into the background. I do wish it had some kind of cover, but the glass lid from our oval slow cooker fits just about perfectly and eliminates spatter. I've just ordered another one. Ours still works just fine and looks practically new -- but if it ever gets discontinued, we want to have a backup. We don't want to have to live without one!』
(Great griddle -- even heat, quick heat/cool) 『I tested the Liddle Griddle by making pancakes. After the griddle indicated it had heated to 350, I tried the waterdrop test, and the droplets skated around the griddle beautifully. The griddle cooked fairly evenly -- as expected, areas near the heating element cooked a tad faster than the off-element areas, but it was a small effect. It also maintained temperature very nicely, staying hot for back-to-back uses, and not getting too hot when sitting idle for a few minutes while we ate before starting another round of cooking.
Another nice feature is that the Liddle Griddle heats and cools fairly quickly.
Now, here's the wacky part of my review... I got this to do surface-mount soldering of electrical components. If you've been considering a toaster oven, hot plate, or skillet for that purpose, try this griddle -- it worked wonderfully! (But don't use it for food after you've used lead solder on it.)』
(Great!) 『This is a great little grill! I made pancakes on it today. It heats up fast and cooks well. It is a great size for 1-2 people. It doens't take up too much counter space either. If you are looking for a grill to make small quantities, this is it!』
(LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!!) 『Perfect size for one! Stays on top of my stove all the time. It's ready to go in seconds - heats up very quickly. I'm sure it uses less electricity than heating up my old stove. Would purchase another one in a heartbeat if anything happened to this one, Excellent product!』 『Ideal for one person or two, this compact electric griddle with its 8-1/2-by-10-1/2-inch cooking surface cooks four fried eggs or two good-sized steaks. Coated with a slightly textured, durable nonstick finish, the griddle requires very little grease, thereby producing healthier food. For fattier meats like bacon, a built-in channel along one end catches drippings. When the griddle's heat control is removed, the unit is fully submersible in warm, soapy water. The 1000-watt griddle plugs into any 120-volt outlet and automatically maintains temperatures ranging from warm to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Made of cast aluminum that resists warping and distributes heat evenly, the griddle measures 14-3/4 by 10 by 2-1/2 inches (the heat-resistant leg-handle units can be unscrewed for even more compact storage), and is covered by a one-year warranty against defects.--Ann Bieri』 『The perfect griddle for singles or couples. The 8-1/2-inch by 10-1/2- inch cooking surface is perfect for one or two servings. Heavy cast aluminum base is virtually warp-proof. Control Master heat control automatically maintains the perfect temperature. DiamondCoat deluxe nonstick finish provides stick-free cooking and easy cleaning. Built-in grease tray catches cooking drippings. Fully immersible with the heat control removed. 120 volts AC, 1000 watts』

It keeps on hissing continuously and you have to think on time...ok the food should be cooked now. If you are thinking that its going to give proper whistle and counting that your rice/dal is cooked, then I would suggest not to go for it. For example if you want to cook rice..let it keep hissing for 10-15 minutes and your rice/dal will be cooked. Good luck.』
(Great Pressure Cooker!!!! :)) 『I have this pressure cooker for over 3 years now. And I recently Bought one more here at amazon. I love it!! It does its job really well, if someone say something bad about this pressure cooker is just because they don't know how to use it. You will not find a better pressure cooker than this one, i tried to use one that i bought from target once and it was terrible, hard to use and i would make weird noises and burn my food. This one on the other hand does everything that you expect from a pressure cooker!!!!!!!!』
(4Quart pressure cooker) 『Pressure cookers are simple and this one simply worked as it was designed to do: Plop the food and water into the unit. Close the lid. Make sure the weight is on the steam spout. Put the unit onto the heat source. When the weight starts to wiggle set a timer and reduce the heat. When the timer goes off turn the heat off and your food is ready. What could be simpler?』
(Best pressure cooker out there!) 『This is a great pressure cooker. I had another that I didn't like and decided to just get a Presto one. I like that rack inside that suspends food so it doesn't burn on the bottom, and it is neat and clean.』
(Modern, up dated recipes) 『My new pressure cooker is almost the same as the first Presto Pressure Cooker that I recived as a wedding gift in 1963. The recipes are so different but give the same great, fast results. I still have my old 1963 recipe book and it has no recipe like Chicken Breasts Tarragon which is in the new cookbook. My new pressure cooker has more safety features than my old one so I am even more confortable using a pressure cooker. I was disappointed that the extra glass lid that you can order does not fit my model. [[ASIN:B00002N601 Presto 01241 4-Quart Aluminum Pressure』 『Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 4-quart aluminum pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional soup pot as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for. Chicken Cacciatore cooks in 8 minutes! This durable, polished-aluminum pressure cooker is an economical addition to any well-rounded set of kitchen tools.
The heavy-duty lid locks down during cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. This pressure cooker is useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains more than 65 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roast--even desserts like Oatmeal-Apple Crisp! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork; or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture.
Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this polished aluminum pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The Presto 4-quart aluminum pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 9 inches in diameter (14 inches including handle) and 7 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained.--Garland Withers』

This album was fantastic and the follow-up of Alpha, although not as great, did not disappoint those who wanted a continuation of their first album. I say a continuation because it was nothing ground-breaking, nor was it easy to remember which of the two albums a particular song came from in later years. Their third album, Astra, was a major disappointment to the fans and the band fell apart in 1985.
The band reunited in 1990 with varying line-ups for tours and a couple of studio albums, but nothing could match the magic of the original line-up. Then, when the original band-members came together for the 25 year anniversary show in Tokyo in 2007, I had to buy the CD to hear how the band would do after all this time. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the variations on old-hits of both Asia and some of the bands the members used to belong to. With the exception of "Video Killed The Radio Star" (at least in MY opinion), Asia was a worthy contender for my time and attention.
So, when Asia came to Los Angeles in July of 2009, I had to go see them play and was again thrilled by their sound, but also by the show itself... and to re-capture that memory, I turned to this DVD to bring those memories back alive.
I highly recommend this for any fan of ASIA and most fans of the "progressive rock" genre. While it isn't for everyone, I was quite pleased with it.』
(Grade AAA+) 『I started to hear Prog Rock since I was 13, today I'm 42, and, became, between other bands, a YES,ELP, King Crimson, between other bands, fan. Well, quite frankly, I was with not big expectations about this Show from, ASIA, you know, Howe with some health problems, Downes kind of out of shape, Wetton fat, Palmer with that "short weird hair and looking".... what a mistake !!! Those guys are booming and rocking better than on the begining of their respectives careers, very powerful, technical, keeping control of every little part of every song...Howe vibrating much more than at with YES, Palmer, kindly destroying and dominating the drums, Wetton singing perfectly from the botton to the top notes and Downes, with much more consistency and punch. Definetely , a Blue Ray concert that worth every minute and money that I spent. Prog Roch Forever and hopefully more shows and long life to ASIA !』
(Awful sound mix) 『Totally agree with a previous review about the sound mix on the Blu-ray disc - it's awful. You get 3 options, DTS-HD, Dolby 5.1, and LPCM. Both the DTS-HD and Dolby 5.1 are terrible - you can barely hear the guitar and anytime the keyboard plays it is way louder than all the other instruments. The only way this disc is watchable is by using the LPCM audio option, which doesn't suffer from the bad audio mixing, but still isn't worth paying extra for Blu-ray. Don't know if this is a problem with my player - it's a Panasonic DMP-BD35, but if you're looking for sweet DTS-HD sound, keep looking.』
(Great Show!) 『These guys are aging like fine wine. Wetton still has that clear and dynamic voice. The video and sound are done well and there is not a medicre song on the playlist in my opinion. Especially loved hearing "In the Court of the Crimson King". Amazing group of musicians.』
(Yikes! Sound Mix?!) 『I love ASIA. I loved seeing 'em live and was totally blown away. And, this is a great document of their tour--except for the sound mix! I was excited to hear the DTS-HD Master Audio and totally immerse myself in the band. Problem is, the surround mix just totally immerses you in Geoff Downes! I saw another review online that asks how this mix could've been released. I wonder the same thing myself. What happened?!! It's really like listening to the keys monitor mix. Can't hear Steve much at all, and Carl is a distant mono. Is this a problem with my player? Do I need to update it? Or is this issue with the mix? In any case, it's very disappointing.』 『Asia, featuring members of Yes, ELP and King Crimson, was the first supergroup of the eighties. Their eponymous debut album, released in 1982, was a huge success racking up global sales in excess of 15 million copies. In 2006 the original four members reunited for the first time in over 20 years for a series of concerts in the US and the UK. The success of this tour led to a full-blown world tour running throughout 2007 in celebration of their 25th anniversary. This DVD was recorded in Tokyo in March 2007 on the Japanese leg of the tour.

I discovered that from somewhere, I already knew and loved this music and very much wanted it. So I did a search [...], knowing that in particular I was looking to include the Polovtsian Dances No.s 8 and 17. All of the discs I found with these pieces, tended to be among compilations of composers (instead of the all-Borodin I was looking for). I found a few fantastic-seeming Borodin collections, but they were long out of print. When I discovered this particular disc and joyfully examined all the samples it contained, I knew this was what I was looking for, ordered it [...], and was pleased to receive it very promptly. My only confusion lies in something I could swear I hear throughout the disc which I couldn't -- and still can't -- hear in my laptop speakers with the downloaded samples. I could swear for the first time ever, I've heard a professional orchestra with some members who don't quite get the right note even when their instruments are prominent? I admit I am very picky about pitch, but I've never before had that problem with classical discs I've picked up. If you are not really picky about pitch, I can recommend this disc wholeheartedly, as a 5. The sound is good, and the overall dynamics are good, and if you are considering this disc you probably love the music already. If you are distracted by flatted notes and poor blending, it's probably more of a 3. But I am still very glad to have the disc.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Must See) 『Actor Shahrukh Khan is the ultimate showman and Om Shanti Om the perfect showcase for his brand of talent. This campy, retro spoof is directed by Farah Khan, who choreographed the Broadway musical Bombay Dreams, and she brings that same theatrical style to her filmmaking. The first half of the movie is set in the 1970s--and it's a tribute to the Hindi films of that decade. Struggling actor Om Prakash (played by Shahrukh) falls in love with starlet Shanti (Deepika Padukone in her Bollywood debut)--but fate drives them apart. Fast-forward 30 years and Om has been reincarnated as a huge star with the same first name, and a wannabe actress named Sandhya helps him rectify the past. Om Shanti Om is full of cameos--the title-track dance number alone features appearances by more than 30 Bollywood stars--as well as inside jokes that only those familiar with Bollywood will get (one particular scene at the Filmfare awards ceremony--Bollywood's Oscars--is hilarious), but anyone with any level of knowledge will realize that the actors are making fun of themselves, providing plenty of laughs. - The Bollywood Ticket: The American guide to Indian movies (Subscribe: The Bollywood Ticket)』
(People REALLY like this movie? Why?) 『OMO is a very average movie. I think Farah Khan is one of the most overblown over-hyped film maker. Actually the word film-maker doesn't describe her. This is more like an MTV movie. A lot of flash without any heart. She said she was after Shahrukh a lot to make this movie and I understand why he was playing hide and seek with her. Now don't get me wrong. The first half was very funny thanks to SRK's wit. She actually said he improvised a lot during the filming and she kept it because it was so funny. Good move sherlock. However, please don't put this movie up there with there with the greats. Lets not encourage this kind of garbage. You want to see great bollywood movies, try "A wednesday, Chak de India, Baghban, Tarre Zameen Par, Fanna, Jab we met, Omkara, Sarkar".』
(Oh! Deepika Oh!) 『Oh! Deepika Oh!
Funny move. Great songs and dances. Really fine acting by everyone including the "junior artists". Shahrukh Khan is his usual self and is in great physical condition for this film. With shirt off or open, in "Darda Disco", he provides legitimate competition to Hrithik Roshan while dancing with some sizzling hot sensual sirens.
Deepika Padukone shines as both the serious sophisticated Shanti and the ditzy charming star-struck Sandy. What a dazzling big-eyed beauty she is. As good as this movie is she makes it better, along with Arjun Rampal who took the part of the villain when he didn't really want to.
This movie rocks from the deliberately cheesy opening song and dance, through 2 more strong songs and dances numbers, through a really funny and clever spoof of an award ceremony, through the dance party with 31 big name stars on stage, all the way to end where the cast and crew humorously run through the final credits leaving Fara Kahn in a funny situation. Oh, yeah, a fairly serious plot was resolved some where in there too, with its own haunting melody. Well done Farah Kahn. 』
(Hilarious) 『As long as one understands that this movie is meant to parody every aspect of Bollywood, from the actors and directors to the dramatic music and the acting itself, this is an incredibly enjoyable movie! It is hilarious, but the plot still really involves you and you connect to the characters. Much better than American parodies! On top of this, the movie arrived days before I even expected it and in perfect shape. And for the huge fans of Shah Rukh Khan like me, the poster is worth the whole deal.』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Skip) 『India is an exotic foreign land to Roshan, a New Yorker of Indian origin (played by Abhishek Bachchan), who brings his sick grandmother back to her Delhi home. Filled with gorgeous urban footage, the film captures the wonder of seeing India for the first time, through an American's eyes, and the initial shock of amazement that any American who's ever been there will never forget. Roshan is thoroughly enchanted by all of it--the crumbling family abode in Chandni Chowk (one of the oldest parts of Delhi), its narrow lanes, its feisty neighbors--particularly the beautiful Bittu (Sonam Kapoor)--and its rich array of traditions. However, he chafes at the injustices he sees that offend his American sense of equality and fairness, putting him at odds with a place he suddenly can't live without. A bizarre subplot about a black monkey that's terrorizing the city--which is supposed to be symbolic of the discord that's always simmering below Delhi's surface--overtakes the main story, culminating in a ludicrous climax that ruins what started out as an intoxicating plunge into the soul of a complicated city. - The Bollywood Ticket: The American guide to Indian movies (Subscribe: The Bollywood Ticket)』
(wildly uneven paean to India) 『**1/2
"Delhi 6" is a messy and overlong - though frequently appealing - tale of a young American man who travels to India to rediscover his roots. When his grandmother is diagnosed with diabetes, Roshan agrees to accompany her back to the land of her birth so she can end her life at the same place where she began it. While there, Roshan learns a thing or two about a culture he's been largely sheltered from in his life in New York. This includes taking the bad along with the good: the sense of community along with the antiquated caste system; the respect for tradition along with the adherence to ancient superstitions; the respect for law-and-order along with the corruption and cronyism of the police and politicians; the technological advances along with a scarcity of resources like electricity and water; the arranged marriages along with the flowering of true love. That latter is particularly crucial to the story as Roshan falls for a beautiful, independent-minded woman whose father wants to marry her off to a man of his choosing even though her heart's desire is to perform as a singer on the popular TV show "Indian Idol."
Like most mainstream movies made in India, "Delhi 6" provides a relatively upbeat, prettified look at life in that country. Any hint of poverty is pushed to the background, while the foreground becomes an almost nonstop dizzying swirl of music and color. And I do mean "nonstop," for if there is one thing "Delhi 6" has in abundance it's musical sequences, some of which drag on for an insufferably long time, adding an unnecessary burden to the movie`s overall running time. The film also culminates in an overwrought scene that feels like a bizarre melding of "West Side Story" with "Carousel."
So what's likable about "Delhi 6"? Well, it's cultural observations are sometimes compelling, particularly its portrayal of the tension that exists between Hindus and Muslims in that nation. Also, the actors (Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, et. al.) are both physically attractive and energetic. And while the humor occasionally veers towards the goofy and the "villainous" figures are largely two-dimensional stereotypes, the movie has a genuine affection for its characters and country (flaws and all) that finally wins us over.』
(The GoodGora Reviews the new Little B DVD) 『Little B's acting just gets better and better. This is another story about people with few special effects. He goes on a mission to help his grand mother and finds his own mission of falling in love with a girl who hates him. Somewhat typical story but done very well.
It is unfortunate for us in the health field that the closing scene is so far fetched!
I try to watch all of his movies because of his talent. He does not disappoint.』
(Great work of art!) 『Movies are a kaleidoscope of poetry, prose, painting, music and more - you'll understand this when you watch Delhi 6. Yes, this movie will affect your sensibilities; your hopes, desires, aversions and aspirations will be kindled and sometimes even questioned. I should also warn you about the 'Bollywood' packaging. But once you surrender yourself to the movie, i.e. accept it with an open mind you won't be disappointed with the 3-hour journey it takes you through - certainly I wasn't:).』 『This Hindi movie attempts to expose the dual face of a person. We all live in today's world pointing a finger at the other person for all that's going wrong around us. Looking for the devil who can be blamed.
Roshan travels from USA to India with his ailing grandmother. Little does he know that this quick trip will turn into the longest journey of his life a journey within!
The story is told against the backdrop of the ancient walled city of Delhi which is a character in herself. A city that represents the chaos of Indian people, their religion and their beliefs. The pin code of this old city is 110006. With pride and love they call it Delhi-6. This Bollywood blockbuster shows around the typical lanes of old Delhi and relates to the typical culture, food, drinks, religion, beliefs, etc of the heart of this capital city.』

That's a perspective that most of us who want to visit China and understand the lifestyle of the people who live there cannot achieve. His writing style is very entertaining and readable. He skillfully weaves the vast history of the regions into current events with minimal judgement. I found the book to be a very valuable introduction to Chinese culture.』
(Enigmatic China) 『If you want to read a book about China and its people, told as a personal travelogue, read "Oracle Bones" by Peter Hessler. It is a beautifully written history of China by a freelance writer who lived among the people. The book runs the gamut of fascinating stories and interesting people. Chinese history is viewed and interwoven through personal stories from a variety of people to include students and scientists and academicians from China and the USA.
One main feature of the book is his continuing dialogue with former Chinese students, taught in English classes, at a local college. These vignettes provided insight into the social, political and economic conditions of their personal lifestyle. The history, life and culture of the Uighurs, the largest minority in China, were especially poignant given the recent tensions generated from the clash with the Han Chinese in Urumchi.
His contact with indigenous Chinese, who were "eye witness" to various aspects of Chinese historical events, as well as those who experienced the political changes in the country, was informative and exhilarating. Interviews with these sages amounted to story-telling. Experience the stories of the tattered lives and dreams of old men reminiscing about their triumphs and failures.
Life in many parts of China revolved around jobs and housing for many young immigrants from the interior taking English classes, making friends and living in newly transformed cities. The government's "Reform and Opening" policy created a nation-on-the-move as millions of people flooded these cities in search of a new life. With such vast movement of people comes the additional problem of languages and dialects. A sense of "community" was difficult to ascertain as families were disrupted and left behind.
The fast pace of life and modernity did not always turn out positive as fraudulent teaching credentials, unregulated building codes, bogus identities and other improprieties were uncovered. Factories were mismanaged and improperly maintained.
Chinese history was not revered by the communists as the winds of political change blew in 1949. The transformation of villages and neighborhoods displaced people and stifled the class structure into a meaningless blur. Recent archeological digs have uncovered layers of ancient artifacts that revealed a plethora of oracle bones and bronzes that shed light on the written language of past dynasties.
A heart-warming anecdote is the focus on the Chinese language and the scrutiny given to the number of characters, radicals and the need to simplify the language.
Read this book and enjoy the immense history of China.

(A good read) 『Oracle Bones is a perfect mixture of anecdote and history. Peter Hessler's portrayals of the quirky people he meets in China, tied up with Chinese history, gave me a new picture of China as a developing nation with a way of life so different from my own. It's a very well-written book, and I highly recommend it as both a good story and an interesting portrayal of modern China.』
(Bones of Contention) 『This second volume of Hessler's China reportage is superior to River Town--in part, Hessler knows China much better now and, as a result, his gaze has broadened and deepened, no longer hemmed in by the realities of second-English teaching in a somewhat backwater town and by the limitations of interaction with a series of hyper-driven, consumer-mad students and rather quirky and sometimes sinister administrators. In Oracle Bones, he is more confident; he knows China and the Chinese better, and he touches on a wide and satisfying range of topics, including the "new economy," Chinese archaeology, and the highly politicized history of the language itself, particularly in the Communist era and beyond. At the same time, twin shadows - on the one hand, that of the Cultural Revolution and the disturbing legacy of the Mao years and, on the other, the proto-capitalist displacements and abuses of the current epoch - hang over the book in ways that are both fascinating and depressing.
Having read Hessler's two books, however, I'm still not sure I could explain what draws him to China--enough to become fluent in the language and to spend year after year living, working, teaching, and reporting there or to nurture the affection he so obviously feels for the Chinese. Indeed, the China that emerges, especially in this second book, strikes one as inhumane, rigid, and jingoistic, as phobic as it is isolated and isolationist, as critical of the West as it is acquisitive and unprincipled. What appears to pervade the country is capitalism without democracy, surely no less dangerous than Communism without democracy.
In any case, Oracle Bones is a fine book that meanders rather than narrates, touches on rather than deeply explores. It is much more than a travelogue and something less than scholarship. More than anything, the reader is ferried pleasantly about by the author's personal curiosities, though Hessler's opinions about what he sees sometimes remain veiled. Hessler's attempt to track down the "truth" of the fate of oracle-bone scholar Chen Mengjia is touching and absorbing; in the end, Hessler's conclusion that such a truth can never be known seems both very post-modern and very Chinese.』
(Humanized China) 『I have been to China on my own three times in the last year and I think that Peter Hessler's books, both this and his first books are excellent ways to prepare yourself for the China of today- modern, dynamic and yet with a rich history. For a Westerner, Hessler has an amazing ability to get underneath the official stuff and deal with real people. In doing so he lays bare the contradictions that are modern China. Everywhere I have been in China (both south China and Beijing so far) there are construction cranes and a bustling, active people, ugly high rise apartment blocks next to exquisite temples, and people in uniforms everywhere. Hessler's writing style portrays very well this activity and the people behind it. The people in Hessler's books, whether the students in his first book (many of whom he follows up with contacts in this book), or the doomed archaeologist who is the focus of much of this book, or his Uighur friends, all of them are people you would like to meet because Hessler portrays them with warmth and clear affection. A great read- I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for his third book. Also try, Ian Johnson's Wild Grass: Three Portraits of Change in Modern China for more of the same kind of writing.』 『
A century ago, outsiders saw China as a place where nothing ever changes. Today the country has become one of the most dynamic regions on earth. InOracle Bones, Peter Hessler explores the human side of China's transformation, viewing modern-day China and its growing links to the Western world through the lives of a handful of ordinary people. In a narrative that gracefully moves between the ancient and the present, the East and the West, Hessler captures the soul of a country that is undergoing a momentous change before our eyes.

Ewans talks about the ancient history, the rise of the Pashtun, the British domination which warped and jaded the fabled compassion and openness of the people, the often overlooked and turbulent developments of the mid-20th century and a rare and balanced view of the soviet occupation from 1979 to the mid-eighties.
For students of Afghanistan who have trouble wading through dry histories, this book is a breath of fresh air. Well written and engaging, this work does not get bogged down with an overabundance of details, but rather gives a clear layout of the histories inlaid with rich details that bring to life the people who made the history. A clear logical flow makes the narrative easy to follow and easy to refer back to previous events. Highly recommended by a student of this fascinating country. 』

(Good Book) 『Good Book. Many names to keep track of but that's history for you. I enjoyed it.』
(A concise history of a turbulent country) 『Afghanistan: A Short History of Its People and Politics By Martin Ewans
This short and quick read easily lives up to its title. This would be a good introductory book to anyone who wants an overview of the history and culture that is very much alive in Afghanistan today. The citizens of Afghanistan have a very keen sense of their history and will talk about conflicts between tribes that happened decades or centuries ago as if they were yesterday. May of the conspiracy theories that this book says Afghans hold to the influence of Britian, the US or Russia on their lives have been echoed by the interpreters that I had here in country.
The book is good for anyone who wants an overview of Afghanistan's history in the last two centuries. While the book touches on Alexander and Genghis Khan, it does not give them nearly the treatment of some other books. Likewise, its treatment of the events of the Great Game between Russian and Britian are complete, but it rarely goes into detail on any particular event. This makes the book good for providing an overall framework for anyone looking to get deeper into the history and politics of the region. 』
(A Good Introduction to Afghan History Through 2000, But With Weaknesses) 『Martin Ewans has given us a useful, highly readable introduction to the people and history of Afghanistan. It begins with a short introduction on the geography and the ethno-linguistic groups of the modern nation. Unfortunately, because it is only a general survey, a serious student will find this material inadequate. Moreover, Ewans' knowledge and experience as a diplomat can work against him as a scholar -- he relies too heavily on assertion and background knowledge, where the book would have profited from better footnotes and sourcing, especially for the modern era where his assertions are more controversial.
Just as one example, he asserts that "the Afghan fiasco was also one of the catalysts that led to the break-up of the Soviet Union on the late 1980s and early 1990s" (p. 169, all citations are to the hardback edition). I use this example because a detailed defense of this statement is clearly beyond the scope of a book on Afghanistan, and yet it is conroversial enough that Ewans should at least refer us to a book that does discuss the question.
This problem is minor for the first thirteen chapters or so, simply because political/social bias does not usually color historical works the further back in time one goes. This book easily earns three stars for these informative and useful chapters (although, again, the serious student will only find it useful as a starting point).
Chapters 14 through 18 cover the Afghan communist movement, through the Soviet invasion, through civil war, and the advent of the Taliban. Ewans does a good job of simplifying extremely complex issues, but again, not without problems. In describing the mujahidin, he acknowledges that "there are dangers in being too dogmatic in describing and classifying them." (pp. 153-54). But he continues to describe the very different (in terms of ideology, techniques, foreign support and degrees of success) groups with the broad label "mujahidin." This tendency is odd at first, but becomes more frustrating in the civil war chapters, where the different groups start to fight among themselves.
In final two chapters and epilogue, Ewans goes from historian to pundit, offering an analysis of the current state of Afghanistan, the blame for its problems, and where it will go in the future. As usual, some of his assertions are without support. On page 211, he quotes "one distinguished academic" without even identifying who that academic is, let alone the source of the quote.
He claims that "If there is to be a tolerable outcome, there will somehow have to be a settlement of all these issues, no doubt brokered by the united nations" (p. 214). This sentence is objectionable for a number of reasons. First, a "tolerable" outcome in a nation state does not necessarily involve the resolution of all problems (England's hyper-aggressive colonialism and denial of political rights in the 19th century, or America's constitutional protection of slavery for over a century, are black spots on their records, but don't make them "failed states"). Ewans points out that the Afghan government cannot provide for its citizens' basic needs, but it is by no means clear that a government is responsible for satisfying basic needs in the first place. Second, Ewans does not explain why the United Nations, with a striking track record of failure in resolving international conflicts, should suddenly become successful in Afghanistan. Ewans' own evidence underscores this point: starting with a totally useless resolution condemning the Soviet invasion (because the Russians have a veto power on the Securit Council; p. 151), and continuing through the present (because of the Taliban's total lack of concern with world opinion), all attempts to use the United Nations to broker political reconciliation have produced no results at all.
His conclusions frequently contradict the evidence he produces in previous chapters. He claims that in Afghanistan, "a fiercely independent people have been more determined than almost any other to resist outside interference..." (p. 213). But Ewans' own survey belies his exaggeration of their independence. The warring mujahidin groups and the Taliban all receive foreign cash, training and equipment, from nations such as America, Iran and Pakistan, while Najibullah's government was directly controlled and armed by the Soviets. The pre-occupation communists (Taraki, Karmal and Amin) received education and political support from the Soviets. All previous presidents and kings accepted at least financial assitance from Russians, Americans and/or British, in the form of technical assistance, loans on highly favorable terms, roads, airports, military equipment and training, and a massive (but failed) dam project for the Helmand valley. In what sense, then, have the Afghans demonstrated their determination to resist outside interference?
A few final thoughts. This is primarily a political/military history. Religion and culture primarily figures only as an explanation for political developments. The few maps are good, but could be better (not all of the place-names mentioned in the text are shown in the maps). The writing style is straightforward and highly readable. And at only 214 pages, the book is fast and never boring. All in all, this is not a bad book by any means. It simply fails to live up to its potential, and so cannot rate more than three stars.』 『A fascinating chronicle of a nation's turbulent history.
Reaching back to earliest times, Martin Ewans examines the historical evolution of one of today's most dangerous breeding grounds of global terrorism. After a succession of early dynasties and the emergence of an Afghan empire during the eighteenth century, the nineteenth and early twentieth century saw a fierce power struggle between Russia and Britain for supremacy in Afghanistan that was ended by the nation's proclamation of independence in 1919. A communist coup in the late 1970s overthrew the established regime and led to the invasion of Soviet troops in 1979. Roughly a decade later, the Soviet Union withdrew, condemning Afghanistan to a civil war that tore apart the nation's last remnants of religious, ethnic, and political unity. It was into this climate that the Taliban was born.
Today, war-torn and economically destitute, Afghanistan faces unique challenges as it looks toward an uncertain future. Martin Ewans carefully weighs the lessons of history to provide a frank look at Afghanistan's prospects and the international resonances of the nation's immense task of total political and economic reconstruction.

They absolutely loved it! The book depicts the life of a young lady in war torn Kabul. The hardships and fears she faces were not fit for a girl her age.I wanted my students to get an understanding of what kids their age are going through in this war. (Did not receive product or explanation why) 『I ordered this product and never received an e-mail stating that it was shipped. I had to wait until the estimated delivery period came and went before I could file a claim (approximately 3.5 weeks after I had submitted my order). Within a day of filing the claim, I was notified that I had been refunded. However, it put me in a bad position as I had to rush out to purchase the book from a bookstore at the last moment before school started. When I received the refund notice, there was no explanation of why my order was not filled nor any kind of apology for the inconvenience this caused. I consider this to be poor customer service. I would have rated this vendor with only 1 star; however, because the refund was processed quickly, I rated them with 2. But I will not do business with this vendor again.』
(Are we so intellectually deracinated that we consider this literature?) 『The Breadwinner is a classic bestseller for our age. It ticks the didactic boxes perfectly - it is educational, not only that it is educational about a key humanitarian and religious travesty of the modern world: the fate of Muslim women under the tyrannical, barbaric, Islamo-fascist Taliban. The characters are clear cut: Parvana, the heroic girl who disguises herself as a boy to become the 'breadwinner' for her family; her father - the wise old educated Afghan teacher who is poised as a deliberate foil to all the Taliban have destroyed in Afghanistan; the Taliban themselves - hideous, Medieval, cruel, frightening barbarians (though we never discover why they have become like this).
Come on. From reading the reviews here you would think this was a children's masterpiece up there with Alice in Wonderland or the Hobbit. It is a nice, UN sanctioned type of book, with 2D characters, that could well be deployed to some important groundwork in the classroom by awakening children's awareness to what is going on in Afghanistan. But as a great piece of literature that educates their (and our) minds, hearts and language sensibilities, it falls sadly flat.』
(Sensitive story) 『The Breadwinner is a sensitive and beautifully told account of what life is like from a child's point of view. I feel it should be read with a child under ten to allow him/her to ask questions. I had to read the second book to discover what happens to the young "hero" and her family.』
(must read) 『Ellis' entire series should be a must read in any middle school!!! I work for a humanitarian organization and have read more than my share of books on Afghanistan. This book and the series does a wonderful job of presenting the history of this country and the challenges of women and all Afghans...I have given it to all young girls I know but would say it is a great read for all youth!』 『Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, 11-year-old Parvana has rarely been outdoors. Barred from attending school, shopping at the market, or even playing in the streets of Kabul, the heroine of Deborah Ellis's engrossing children's novelThe Breadwinneris trapped inside her family's one-room home. That is, until the Taliban hauls away her father and Parvana realizes that it's up to her to become the "breadwinner" and disguise herself as a boy to support her mother, two sisters, and baby brother. Set in the early years of the Taliban regime, this topical novel for middle readers explores the harsh realities of life for girls and women in modern-day Afghanistan. A political activist whose first book for children,Looking for X, dealt with poverty in Toronto, Ellis basedThe Breadwinneron the true-life stories of women in Afghan refugee camps.
In the wily Parvana, Ellis creates a character to whom North American children will have no difficulty relating. The daughter of university-educated parents, Parvana is thoroughly westernized in her outlook and responses. A pint-sized version of Offred from Margaret Atwood'sThe Handmaid's Tale, Parvana conceals her critique of the repressive Muslim state behind the veil of her chador. Although the dialogue is occasionally stilted and the ending disappointingly sketchy,The Breadwinneris essential reading for any child curious about ordinary Afghans. Like so many books and movies on the subject, it is also eerily prophetic. "Maybe someone should drop a big bomb on the country and start again," says a friend of Parvana's. "'They've tried that,' Parvana said, 'It only made things worse.'" (Ages 9 to 12)--Lisa Alward』
『The Breadwinner brings to life an issue that has recently exploded in the international media the reality of life under the Taliban. Young Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan. Because he has a foreign education, her father is arrested by the Taliban, the religious group that controls the country. Since women cannot appear in public unless covered head to toe, or go to school, or work outside the home, the family becomes increasingly desperate until Parvana conceives a plan. She cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy to earn money for her family. Parvanas determination to survive is the force that drives this novel set against the backdrop of an intolerable situation brought about by war and religious fanaticism. Deborah Ellis spent several months talking with women and girls in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan and Russia. This suspenseful, timely novel is the result of those encounters. Royalties from the sale of The Breadwinner will go toward educating Afghan girls in Pakistani refugee camps. A potent portrait of life in contemporary Afghanistan, showing that powerful heroines can survive even in the most oppressive ... conditions. Booklist』
