(An Unique and Critical Document in the history of PRC and CCP)
『In the 60's of 20th century,Liu Shaoqi, former president of PRC, senior leader of CCP died in a secret place without no reason. In the first ten years of 21st century Zhao Ziyang, former general secratary of CCP,died with great disappointment and regret about CCP and reform of China.Who will be the next one?』

(Editors Did Great, Could Have Gone Extra Mile)
『Most people miss the two bottom lines that I found engaging:

1. China's government is a screwed up bureaucracy with petty egos just like ours.

2. China produced moderate pragmatist Premier Zhao Ziyang, promoted him, and empowered him.

With all due respect to all those wailing and moaning about the years of house arrest, this book is phenomenal for documenting the above two points alone, and Premier Zhao Ziyang will stand in history as one of the greatest leaders along with Mao Zedong (their rendition, I always preferred Mao Tse-tung) and Deng Xiaoping.

The book consists of six parts with thirty-sevel chapters bracketed by an introduction and an epilogue. It is based on tapes smuggled out from China and made secretly by Zhao Ziyang, and while I do not discount a marvelous Information Operation (IO) by the Chinese (along with Cuba, my two most admired counterpart intelligence services), on balance this appears to be the real deal.

The primary focus of this book is on the three years in power, NOT on the decades in provincial positions where he was a pragmatic and extraordinarily successful leader; nor on the decade of house arrest. This book is a "Memorandum for the Record" as the protagonist remembers it, naming names all along the way.

It is important to note that Zhao Ziyang was rehabilitated by Mao himself, and this is a testament to the fact that Zhao, like so many others, was improperly demoted to rehabilitation and remediation camps.

The book publishes the outcome of the failed investigation into Zhao Ziyang, which was itself never published in China or shared outside the small circle of power.

Most will focus on the student unrest and the Tieneman Square confrontation. While I have already summed up what mattered to me from this book, the following quote is very worthwhile: "I refused to be the General Secretary who mobilized the military to crack down on the students."

Deng comes across as a great leader who is open to change surrounded by others who prefer the planned economy, and having a difficult time "herding cats" at the top. I am very impressed by the agricultural reform and the move away from collective farming to "those who farm will have land," which unleashed the entrepreneurial power of individual production.

There is a chapter on the special eceonomic zones, and a lot of focus on anti-corruption efforts which by this book's account appear to have been overdone.

There was huge internal conflict over foreign investment, and a really impressive focus at the top on scale and efficiency. These are SMART leaders, whatever their petty peronal issues might be.

Zhao Ziyang ran the Chinese economy for ten years, and I put down the book stunned with both his success, and with the inadequacy of the book in communicating that success in raw terms related to the complexity of China, second perhaps only to India in that regard (complexity, they are co-equal in standing with Brazil, Indonesia, and Russia, and soon I might add Turkey and Iran).

He learned from the French and the British that massive irrigation projects seeking to control nature were not smart, and instead refocused China on farming with nature. See Acts of God: The Unnatural History of Natural Disaster in America for additional perspective on why this is so righteous.

I grew up in Asia, and still treasure the copy of The Little Red Book that was given to my father when he was acpatured by Vietnamese militia sailing past Hainan on his way to Hong Kong. I am very familiar with the catch phrases that China was always used to summarize complex policies, and this book does not lack of them:

"Emancipating the Mind" along with "Remaining Clean (of Corruption)" and "Practice is the sole criterion of Truth" are among my favorites from this particular work. China graduates more high school HONOR students than the USA graduates from across its ENTIRE dumbed-down high school population, and that's the ugly truth.

In find 1988 featured in the protagonist's memory as a really tough year, and observe that is also the year in which Bin Laden started the global creation of madrasses teaching the virulent form of Wahabbism funded by Saudi Arabia, and also the year in which General Al Gray, then Commandant of the Marine Corps, created the first intelligence center in the USA focused on global coverage, and realized that we were failing to both study the Third World and failing to make proper use of open sources of information. 1988 will be the year in which future histories begin their story about the implosion of the USA, the end of predatory immoral capitalism, and the rise of collective public intelligence and conscious capitalism.

I learn that China is *very* succeptible to rumor and panic buying.

I find the conclusion to be fantastic. In his reflections under house arrest, Zhoa Ziyang concluded that China must extablish political liberty to acompnay economic freedom, and stressed the need to manage multi-level dialog and freedom of the press. In retirement he found socialism shallow and converted to parliamentary democracy as the best possible means for managing complex China.

There is an analysis of Deng that includes a description of Deng as "empty words" and a conclusion that Deng absolutely refused actual political reform. Generally Deng is believed to have moved away from Mao, but to have been too senior for others to challenge so they took it out on Zhao instead. On balance, being already impressed with China's economic progress, I can only wonder what might have been had Deng trusted his instincts and given Zhao all possible support.

The back of the book offers a listing of names with one paragraph biographies, but it is not enough. The publisher should consider re-issuing this important work with many diagrams that show "who's who" in relation to specific party organs and policies across a time line. I have long stressed the need for a line of intelligence collection and analysis that focuses on "who said what when." CIA still does not know how to do that (or want to do that), so on issues from the Spratley Islands to Africa to Argentina and China's new south, generally the US Government has no clue.

I started to give this book four stars, but on review of my notes, I have to come up to five stars. If they re-do the book as I have suggested, it will be listed at Phi Beta Iota as Beyond 6 Stars.』

(Lacking Introspection)
『I am still probably futiley hoping for a more personal biography of Zhao, but given his isolation before death, I may have to be satisfied with these extracts from his journal. I would have liked much more exploration on some of his thoughts, particularly on how he might have envisioned a parliamentary government to operate in China; given his likely attentions at the time of writing, I suppose I should be content with what's present.

Zhao's economic insights are of particular note, as well as his discussions of Deng's limited practical involvement in political decision making. His analyses of Deng and Hu Yaobang are (as to be expected) much more objective and insightful than any personal introspections, and these insights do a lot to provide context for Chinese politics then and now.

Hopefully one day a few of Zhao's more pragmatic and libertarian colleagues will come out and offer some true insights into the real man. Until then, we'll have to make do with this somewhat unobjective exploration of Zhao's thoughts in his final years.』

(Portrait of a Technocrat)
『Not soon, but one day, scholars will gain access to the documents, letters, diaries, and hidden correspondence of China's leadership over the last 30 years (and perhaps earlier). Then we will know the full story of how China emerged from the hell of the Cultural Revolution, and how it grappled with opening to the west. Until then, we will have to make do with the memoirs of Zhao Ziyang.

It's a good start. As other reviewers have mentioned, Zhao's journal is absolutely critical in understanding the rivalries and fissures within the Chinese Communist Party during the 1980's. Even now, Prisoner of the State gives us an invaluable look at how China's leaders debated political and economic reforms, and many of the inner workings of the Party.

For me, the most valuable lessons from Zhao's account derived from learning about the subtle ways in which leaders exerted power and influence. I was particularly struck by the continuing influence of "party elders" such as Chen Yun and Li Xiannian, even if they did not hold formal posts. Similarly, Prisoner brilliantly describes the ways in which Zhao, newly installed as CCP General Secretary, was able to muzzle the "anti-bourgeois liberalization" campaign that conservatives such as Li and Deng Lichun had advocated. Zhao never OPPOSED the campaign, but merely cabined it, forbidding editorials attacking individuals, preventing guilt-by-association tactics common during the Cultural Revolution, and enunciating the idea that true progress meant maintaining vigilance against both Left- and Right-deviationism. He also kept the Left at bay by eliminating their power centers, such as Red Flag magazine, and the research department of the Part Secretariat. Mao famously said that power flows from the barrel of a gun, but Zhao's picture shows something quite different: in Deng's China, power flowed from an ability to hold together political coalitions, keep one's opponents off guard and guessing as to your intentions, and -- of course -- maintaining the support of Deng himself.

Zhao realized too late that he had failed in this critical third requirement. At times, he seems to fool even himself. In the first part of the book, Zhao claims that his political fall originated essentially in a mistake of etiquette. When Zhao was out of the country, conservatives scared Deng about the protests; the supreme leader called the protesters anti-socialist and anti-patriotic; conservatives published Deng's comments in the People's Daily; the students became angry and refused to stop until receiving a retraction; and since Deng could not admit a mistake, something had to give. But by the end of the memoir, Zhao concedes what he had failed to see previously, viz. Deng was simply not going to tolerate meaningful political reform. He was committed to the dominance of the CCP.

Indeed, until the end of the book, Zhao seems unaware of the big picture political issue that underlies all the talk of China's future -- whether China will remain a Communist autocracy. Essentially, what emerges through most of the work is a portrait of a technocrat, cautiously and for the most part wisely moving toward market reforms, but seemingly oblivious to the question of the future of the Party. Even at the end of the book, Zhao seems to insist that parliamentary democracy will be beneficial not only to China, but to the Party itself. This is clearly false.

Zhao was no democrat, and at the end of the book, he concludes that moving toward democracy is necessary only because it is a prerequisite for economic reform. But as of this writing, that diagnosis has been proved wrong: China's economy has moved ahead by leaps and bounds, and has become the second most important economy in the world, but the nation remains completely autocratic in the political sphere. Freedom and democracy are crucial for their own sake, not because they will help raise GDP.

Zhao was the best of his generation, a man with the intelligence and flexibility to mastermind China's economic reforms, and with the seeming common decency to shy away from turning China's army on its best and brightest young students. In future decades, he will once again be honored in his own country. But he was not the man to bring democracy to China, and Prisoner of the State shows why.』

(Initially Interesting; Ultimately Terribly Boring)
『This is a somewhat enlightening and educational look at the inner workings of the Chinese Communist Party leadership during the late 1980s, including the Tiananmen Square massacres, as seen through the eyes of then Chinese Premier and General Secretary, Zhao Ziyang.

Zhao Ziyang came to power in 1987, through the support of acknowledged supreme Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, with the charge to modernize the Chinese economy and pursue a path of political liberalism. When the Chinese student protests broke out, in response to the death of Zhao's predecessor, this pursuit of political liberalism evaporated under the heat of the reactionary members of the Chinese Central Committee. When these members were able to persuade Deng to support their policy of martial law and military response, Zhao's role in Chinese government came to an end.

This book is a transcription of Zhao's thoughts concerning his period in power and the circumstances leading to his downfall and subsequent house arrest. The tapes that he made were certainly not authorized by the Chinese authorities and were only published after being smuggled out in pieces and reassembled outside China.

While the first half of the book deals with the final years of his Communist Party leadership, the book then reverts to the earlier years of his service and at this point, the book lost much of its interest in my opinion. Quite frankly, it was terribly boring and something of a chore to complete. Suffice it to say that Zhao was a pawn in the leadership struggle between Deng Xioaping and other aged conservative Communist members of the Central Committee.

By their nature, the writings are somewhat disjointed and poorly presented, though the editors do the readers a service by beginning each chapter with a historical context. The plethora of Chinese names is confusing and at times, difficult to follow from scene to scene. However, the inner workings of the Chinese Communist government during this historically monumental period in Chinese and world history are possibly enlightening and educational for those with an interest in the subject.

First and foremost, Zhao seeks to absolve himself of any responsibility for the 1989 student massacres and the preceding economic upheavals, and by comparison to many of the other Communist hardliners, he was certainly a voice of moderation. Almost comically, however, he spends many pages arguing the illegality of his removal and subsequent house arrest, quoting chapter and verse from Communist Party procedural manuals and "Chinese Law", as though he were not a participant in a repressive, Communist autocracy, but instead was due the benefits of a western style democracy, governed by the rule of law. It was enough to make one exclaim, "DUDE, YOU ARE IN CHINA!! The same people that ordered the massacre of Chinese students are dealing with your case now. Deng Xiaoping is the putative Emperor of China; you are at his mercy and he is not pleased with your actions."

The final half of the book is mired in economic theory and endless explanations and excuses for why the Chinese economy foundered during the relevant period. Again, it is hopelessly boring and poorly put together. I can truthfully give the first part of the book 3½ -4 stars due to the historical importance of the Tiananmen Square events and the behind the scenes look at the Chinese government's decision making process. At the point where the book reverts to Zhao's early years, however, the book becomes a one start effort. Go to the library, read the firsthalf of the book and skip the rest.

“Zhao may be more dangerous in death than he was in life.”—Time

How often can you peek behind the curtains of one of the most secretive governments in the world?Prisoner of the Stateis the first book to give readers a front row seat to the secret inner workings of China’s government. It is the story of Premier Zhao Ziyang, the man who brought liberal change to that nation and who, at the height of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, tried to stop the massacre and was dethroned for his efforts.

When China’s army moved in, killing hundreds of students and other demonstrators, Zhao was placed under house arrest at his home on a quiet alley in Beijing. China’s most promising change agent had been disgraced, along with the policies he stood for. The premier spent the last sixteen years of hislife, up until his death in 2005, in seclusion. An occasional detail about his life would slip out: reports of a golf excursion, a photo of his aging visage, a leaked letter to China’s leaders. But China scholars often lamented that Zhao never had his final say.

As it turns out, Zhao did produce a memoir in complete secrecy. He methodically recorded his thoughts and recollections on what had happened behind the scenes during many of modern China’s most critical moments. The tapes he produced were smuggled out of the country and form the basis forPrisoner of the State. In this audio journal, Zhao provides intimate details about the Tiananmen crackdown; he describes the ploys and double crosses China's top leaders use to gain advantage over one another; and he talks of the necessity for China to adopt democracy in order to achieve long-term stability.

The China that Zhao portrays is not some long-lost dynasty. It is today’s China, where the nation’s leaders accept economic freedom but continue to resist political change.

If Zhao had survived—that is, if the hard-line hadn’t prevailed during Tiananmen—he might have been able to steer China’s political system toward more openness and tolerance.

Zhao’s call to begin lifting the Party's control over China's life—to let a little freedom into the public square—is remarkable coming from a man who had once dominated that square. Although Zhao now speaks from the grave in this moving and riveting memoir, his voice has the moral power to make China sit up and listen.

(I knew women like this)
『I graduated from Barnard in 1981 and I knew women like this. A little too much money and a bit to little experience it seemed easier for the trust fund set to get themselves into serious trouble, than the rest of us. Still, there was something to envy in the idea that adventure is a birthright. This book is hard to read in parts, but the beginning is all possibility. It is a look into another life, both for the women involved and into another culture and finally how they clash.』

(China didn't really deserve this)
『There have been other books about traveling with a mental case -- Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" is perhaps the most famous -- but few have been so relentlessly grim as "Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven."

The title, to get that out of the way, is catchy but has almost nothing to do with the book, which is the tale of two fresh Brown graduates who decide in 1986 to backpack around the world, starting with China, then only recently open to such gallivanting. I confess, I picked up the book because I wondered just how stupid two Ivy League girls could be. Plenty, as expected, but there are more layers in this book than I expected.

One in particular raises "Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven" out of the common ruck of travelogues. Not too often in travel literature (aside from the explicitly political) does the author face and confess to a moral dilemma. It happens here, and it turns the book into an experience worth contemplating, which otherwise it would not be.

If it hadn't been for that and for the crisis of madness that overtook Gilman's travel companion, called Claire, this would have been a tedious tale.

The two girls had vague notions of experiencing the rest of the world, but since they didn't speak Chinese, their experience of China was trivial. Mostly they interacted with other backpackers, portrayed as a shallow and giddy bunch of layabouts that you wouldn't bother to know back home.

This knocking about and being continually repulsed by the living standards of the Chinese could, and does, get old pretty quick, and combined with occasional passages of too-purple prose made reading "Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven" a chore for the first 150 pages. The confession that "each day . . . we grew more acutely aware of just how coddled we'd been all our lives and just how foolish we were" was no surprise. I could have guessed as much before opening the covers.

Things improve -- that is, they go downhill catastrophically for the participants -- thereafter.

With the perspective of nearly 25 years, Gilman has some thoughtful things to say about her experience and about the Chinese, to the extent she learned much about them. "Everything I'd known up to that point about China was basically, a gross cultural stereotype." By the end of the book, she comes away with a different stereotype, equally at odds with reality, or so it appears.

The Chinese put up with a lot. Whenever I walk the aisles of a garden store and see the ranks of ceramic or fiberglass garden gnomes from China, I wonder what the former peasants who have migrated to the dark, satanic mills of the Pearl River Valley or Shanghai imagine to be the cultural characteristics of people who need so many garden gnomes. The few Chinese who encountered Susan and Claire couldn't have been much enlightened in that respect.

(No Bowl of Flawless Delight Paradise Dog Soup)
『"Undress me in the Temple of Heaven", a travel memoir about two Brown grads in the People's Republic of China in the eighties, seems an obvious attempt to cash in on the success of travel memoir "Eat, Pray, Love", by Elizabeth Gilbert. Gilbert was such an original fruitcake that her first person, utterly self-absorbed memoir was a charming wander across the map. Unfortunately, Gilman's book is not the sexy, fun romp that the title seems to promise. Yes, she finally gets undressed, but the Temple of Heaven ain't what it used to be. This is a dated, sarcastic tale of an ill-advised trip to China with the usual self congratulatory, Liberal stereotypes: big boobed, ethnic, free love, New York liberal, versus the uptight, rich, thin, blond Republican. Guess who wins. The so called irreverence is that Gilman departs far enough from the party line to admit that Communist China is no bowl of Flawless Delight Paradise Dog soup. I found this book a strange, headache inducing journey, where the girls are always in excruciatingly unpleasant circumstances but manage to survive--no mean feat in the vicious, crude, Orwellian communist bureaucracy of the People's Republic. Gilman has a few honest moments about youth, but not enough and not nearly honest enough.』

(Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven)

I enjoyed Undress Me in The Temple of heaven -- I found it was a fascinating non-fiction book about China both in 1985 and recently!!

I have bought 3 copies and given two away -- so far everyone is enoying it immensely!!』

(Hindered by unlikable characters and the author's reading of the audio)
『Right after their Brown University graduation in 1986, author Susan Jane Gilman and her friend Claire Van Houten embark on an ambitious venture: backpacking around the world. Of course, after studying a placemat at the International House of Pancakes, they decide to begin in Communist China, only ten days after outsiders have been allowed to enter. Thus begins Gilman's memoir of the journey, Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven.

After deplaning in Hong Kong, Gilman gets a raging nosebleed, and only then do they realize they've packed everything but tissues -- including a year's supply of tampons, a Lonely Planet guide, and the complete works of Friedrich Nietzsche (a little light reading on the trail is always good). And that's only the beginning of a truly misguided attempt at life-expansion that takes them through most of China, though they have increasing difficulty with communication as they find their Mandarin phrasebook practically useless when faced with the many different regional dialects.

The strangeness only escalates when, once they're settled, with little social contact to speak of, Claire suddenly decides to repeatedly go off by herself, doing "business," making "contacts," etc. and making less and less sense all the time. What happens later acts as the climax of this globe-trotting story and illustrates the everpresent bureaucracy of a country under Communist rule.

Gilman does her best to tell only the more entertaining parts of the story -- oddly enough, the title references an event that didn't actually happen -- but it's hard to stay interested in a pair of women who are so blatantly despicable. Unlikable protagonists are not the way to go with a book intended for a wide audience, though Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven is still bound to be a huge hit with reading groups. The various people that Susan and Claire meet offer money, food, help, and advice, and yet are more often than not left without even a thank you.

Nevertheless, the seemingly unending procession of one obstacle after another makes it equally difficult to stop reading/listening. And while not exactly likable, both women display a certain guileless charm: a complete lack of worldliness that makes it easy to step into their shoes and wonder what you would do in the same situation (or give thanks that you aren't).

The audiobook of Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven (read by the author) includes an interview with Gilman on the last disc, where she brings the listener up to date with her life and contact with the characters. Perhaps the time spent confirming events and writing them down overexposed her to the text and characters, but she sounds rather bored by the whole venture.

One would think that having Gilman read her own book would add an extra layer to the experience, but it actually detracts somewhat and emphasizes the fact that she is trying to write above her ability. She mispronounces numerous words, including "Charybdis," "depravity," "normalcy," and the verb form of "frequent" while using questionable phrases like "gouged with graffiti," and these seeming mistakes continually took me out of the story. (The moral: one so proud of her alma mater to repeatedly brag about it in the text should choose words she has mastered.)』

Amazon Best of the Month, March 2009: While this latest memoir from Susan Jane Gilman (formerHypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress) appears to be a saucy account of international sexcapades, it quickly reveals its whip-smarts, sucking you into a story that brilliantly captures the "ecstatic terror" of gleefully leaping from your comfort zone--and finding yourself in freefall. It's 1986, and newly minted ivy league grads Susy and her friend Claire have never left the U.S. when (inspired by a "Pancakes of Many Nations" promotion during a drunken night at IHOP) they hatch a plan to circle the world, starting in China, which has just opened to tourists. From the moment of arrival, they're out of their depth, perpetually hungry, foolish, and paranoid from relentless observation. Claire, who carries the complete works of Nietzsche "like a Gideon Bible," seems more capable than Susy until encounters with military police, hallucinatory fevers, and a frantic escape from a squalid hospital expose cracks in her psyche that utterly derail their plans. Rich with insight, dead-on dialogue, and canny characterization, Gilman's personal tale nails that cataclysmic collision of idealism and reality that so often characterizes young adulthood. Be prepared to wolf down the final hundred pages in one sitting. --Mari Malcolm
『They were young, brilliant, and bold. They set out to conquer the world. But the world had other plans for them.

Bestselling author Susan Jane Gilman's new memoir is a hilarious and harrowing journey, a modern heart of darkness filled with Communist operatives, backpackers, and pancakes.

In 1986, fresh out of college, Gilman and her friend Claire yearned to do something daring and original that did not involve getting a job. Inspired by a place mat at the International House of Pancakes, they decided to embark on an ambitious trip around the globe, starting in the People's Republic ofChina. At that point,Chinahad been open to independent travelers for roughly ten minutes.

Armed only with the collected works of Nietzsche, an astrological love guide, and an arsenal of bravado, the two friends plunged into the dusty streets ofShanghai. Unsurprisingly, they quickly found themselves in over their heads. As they ventured off the map deep into Chinese territory, they were stripped of everything familiar and forced to confront their limitations amid culture shock and government surveillance. What began as a journey full of humor, eroticism, and enlightenment grew increasingly sinister-becoming a real-life international thriller that transformed them forever.

Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven is a flat-out page-turner, an astonishing true story of hubris and redemption told with Gilman's trademark compassion, lyricism, and wit.』

(Easy serve air pot)
『Probably bigger than I needed but is a great product and I really like it. Would recommend to anyone.』

(Exactly what I needed....)
『We use these handy pots to keep our coffee and hot water piping hot for hours. It's actually saved us coffee because we only need to brew when people drink it all instead of when it gets cold.』

(Good product)
『It would have been more helpful to know the height of the pot without the lid. It was a bit taller than I needed but we made it work and it keeps the liquid hot for a very long time. Half a pot of hot coffee left on Friday is still warmer than luke warm by monday morning.』

(Couldn't be happier!)
『I'll admit, I was a bit apprehensive, due to the "blemish" comment in the product description. Ultimately, none found! This airpot is the best one of the last four I'd purchased, two of which were also of the 'pump handle' variety. The brushed stainless finish also coordinates well with my other countertop appliances. I plan to buy another one for the vacation home to replace the 'button pump' type we have there.』

(A little disappointed)
『I don't think this airport keeps the coffee very hot unless it is filled to the brim each time. It takes almost 20 cups to fill to the top. Maybe I should have looked for a smaller version.』
『The Air Pot?? Stainless Steel Beverage Dispenser features unbreakable all stainless steel construction and a lever style pump for quick and easy serving. Its high quality all stainless steel vacuum liner is durable and ensures contents remain hot or cold for hours. Our patented Brew-Thru?? stem stopper and removable lid that opens a full 125?? allows direct brewing under most commercial brewers. Has a generous capacity of 101-oz. and comes in a stainless steel exterior finish. One year warranty on parts and labor.』

Also great in the bedroom to create a private dressing area. The wood trim is solid with Shoji paper insert. (SPECTACULAR GIFT TO HUMANITY)
『Tibetan chanting is extremely deep and emotionally affecting. The chanting is executed deep in the throat. Bells provide the perfect counterpoint at exactly the right time. This chanting is likely to sound weird, if not scary, on first listen. I listened to Freedom Chants today after a long interval and found it weird and scary at first. I knew I really liked the music and was in culture shock. I also was in the "Holiday Spirit" during the Christmas rush: I was exhausted, frazzled and trying to do to much. After listening to the monks for a while, I found myself involuntarily taking large breaths and relaxing. My tension dissipated automatically. After a while, I felt peaceful and unconcerned about the Holiday madness. I looked at the cover of a fashion magazine. An anorexic model grinned painfully, the soul of forced, unnatural gaiety. The Holiday issue put me in culture shock in the other direction. Why do we do all this? That's what this music is: a drugless tranquilizer and life evaluation tool. But you gotta get through the culture shock.』

(The light inside of you)
『This is a powerful meditation CD. It feels as if the chanting of Tibetan monks sweep away all negative emotions from your heart and at the end you can really feel the light inside of you.』

(Happy customer)
『I really like this item a lot, play it often, feel connected to the monks, wanting them to flourish. The service to my mailbox was fast also. I'm a happy customer.』

(amazing music)
『words cannot explain the experience of this music. to play it is to spread peace to all sentient beings. i play this CD often, even when i cannot personally listen to it -- for example if i am in another area of the house or leaving. life is improved by these tones, and my house retains the happiness vibrations. most highly recommended.』

(change)
『Well if you want to know what tibet chanting is about ,this is it.if not open minded you might not be open to this at first, but if you just think about what these peaceful monks are doing and understand why they are chanting you might change your mind and your outlook.I am very good friends with the lead chanter SONAM.He is not a monk anymore but he still has the peace that all sentient beings desire. This cd is wonderful..an even better one is THE GYUTO MONKS:tibetan tantric choir(from 1987).ENJOY and FREE TIBET』
『Recorded in America during the Chinese crackdown on Tibet, two of these three extended tracks feature 21 monks from the 500-year-old Gyüto Tantric Order, chanting for freedom and world peace. Beautifully recorded, it features the monks, each singing two and three note polyphonics from the throat, accompanied by occasional percussion and ceremonial horns in trance-inducing meditations to the Buddhist deities Yamantaka and Mahakala.Cosmic harmony and tolerance are well served by these uplifting incantations which constitute some of the best recordings of this uniquely Tibetan sacred music. A bonus to this spiritual and transcendental endeavor is a track by Mickey Hart, Phillip Glass, and Kitaro, live in front of an audience (and the monks) in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York.--Derek Rath

(Heavenly....)
『No words can describe how I feel everytime I watch bellydance superstars. Their the best!!! I've seen other bellydance dvd but nothing compares to the bellydance superstars......』

(The Greatest Bellydancers In The World)
『This debut DVD of the world-famous bellydance troupe features your favorite dancers, including Suhaila Salimpour, Rachel Brice, Amar Gamal and Dondi Dahlin. I especially loved Dondi's bellydance tribute to the late Marylin Monroe. Their bios and special features were also included in the DVD. I will be looking forward to future Bellydance Superstars DVD releases.』

(Enjoyable)
『I enjoyed this dvd for the most part.I didn't care for some of the camera angles,I don't think all of that moving around the dances was necessary. When Rachel was doing her first number, some of the camera angles were awful.Because of her subtle moves and belly rolls you sometimes missed them because the camera was over her head or showing her back.I didn't care for Suhaila's dances...I know she can do better than that.I love Jillina, one of my favorite dances to watch,Rania has performed better also.Ansuya was great,I have never seen her before.Amar and Sonia, lovely beautiful moves.Tamalyn was very good,I like the first dance with a Spanish flair to it.I don't regret buying the dvd and I will watch it many times, and buy other 'Bellydance Superstars' dvd's in the future』

(Smokin' hot women)
『These women are hot as firecrackers. Ansya, Sonia, Rachel Brice&Riana
lead the way. Also live in Paris at the follies is smokin'
I have been a Bellydance superstar fan ever since I went nearly crazy
with desire seeing them on McEnroe several years ago.
Every dvd they make gets me so excited.
Rachel brice solo dvd's are also very worth while.
Before I got married I spent many nights setting the dvd player
on repeat play of a round robin of Ansya, Sonia, and Rachel Brice
segments as I blasted off with a bowl of prime Ganja.
My wife frowns on such activity so that is in my past.』

(So much fun to watch)
『This dvd is great if you are a belly dancer, a student dancer or just like to watch great performances. I have seen this dvd a few times already and showed it to all my friends and we all love it.』

(A True Masterpiece of Duduk performance)
『MR A.Peterson(South California), I'm astonished by the beautiful music of this album. The mellow sounds of this beautiful armenian instrument are amazing. I can not imagine that anyone would not absolutely treasure every note of Mr Levon's performance.』

(multi dimensional Armenian music)
『this CD depicts the Armenian Duduk's mysterious and captivating
tunes that trenscend the conventional yet faithful to it's awefilled essence - soul music of a nation whose melodies of lament still beckon justice... nourishing for souls of conflict』

(mellow joys)
『I was a little nervous that this might be a world music exercise in the worst sense of the phrase, particularly with the other instruments listed, since the duduk is at its best when solo or solo with a drone.
However I was very impressed by the whole CD. The playing is first class, and manages to be both mellow and incisive. It is always good to hear other duduk players, apart from Gasparyan, since outside Armenia itself, few other "names" appear on the CDs available (although there is a Californian Armenian label - which is available in Armenia but which I have never seen in the UK).
Wonderful !』

(An astoundingly beautiful recording of duduk music.)
『I've been impressed by Minassian's playing with Peter Gabriel and Afro Celt Sound System, and was intrigued when I found he was releasing an album. As a collector of Duduk music (and duduks), I'm utterly astounded at how beautiful this album is. Levon's tone is gorgeous and his accompanists (piano, keyboards, ney flute, violin, tenpur, oud, and percussion) do a wonderful job of complimenting it. Most of the tracks feature Levon's duduk soaring over wonderfully minimal backing tracks, but a few feature some breathtaking vocals courtesy of Roselyne Minassian and Herve Teboul as well. This is the most genuine and successful world music albums I've ever heard.』

(Rejuvenation of the"Lost temples of India")
『Had the luck to fall upon this documentary on Discovery Channel some time back and watched again yesterday (December 30, 2002) and this time with my wife.
It's a wonderful presentation, to say the least. The vivid picturisation of this golden age of India and the unraveling of the mysteries behind the temples and its' creators stand testimony to the immense research that has gone behind this work.
It's an audio/visual encyclopedia for students, researchers and inquisitive minds alike wanting to discover the wonder that was India.
It is unfortunate that this video was unavailable at the time of my graduation when my proposed research on"Temples of India"had to be replaced due to lack of references and documentation.』

("This is the best of the best Pink Eiga!!")
『I saw this film at New York Film Festival in June. The Director, Daisuke Goto is amazing!! He is my favorite Pink Eiga director from Japan! He is just genius... he always creates the polished scenario, which is to be produced only at Pink Eiga production.
As the heroine is blind, the story goes to be twisted and very sad. Soon you will be involved into the story from the beginning... All the characters are attractive, and adorable. Nothing is missing. This is the best of the best Pink Eiga!

『A blind woman falls in love with a short ventriloquist, just by listening to his voice. However, when she meets the vetriloquist she mistakes him for his much taller assistant. What ensues is a quirky and touching story of mistaken identity and sexual awakening. Winner of the Silver Medal at the 2005 Pink Eiga Awards, BLIND LOVE is a must see for any Daisuke Goto (A LONELY COW WEEPS AT DAWN) fan!』

『Kingdoms of the Coast (Episode 3) Along 120,000 miles of Asia s shoreline, land and sea struggle against each other in a rivalry which creates one of Asia s greatest resources.

The film explores the huge variety of the coasts by focusing on two themes: their wealth, in sheer volume and in diversity, and their wide range of influence, which stretches far beyond the thin line on the map which marks the shoreline.

In India, torrential rains are part of the great cycle of exchange between land and sea. The rains tear at the land, sometimes producing huge floods. But as rivers laden with sediment rush towards the sea, they pass through mangrove forests, which steal the earth back again.

Indonesia has the greatest area of mangroves on earth. Over 4 million hectares of trees provide shelter and food for creatures of land and sea, and for some animals which live between both worlds.

Mangrove forests act as vast natural machines which help drive the richness of inshore waters. Here, the coast s fertility is founded on sediments washed from far inland. The mangrove forest transforms the silt into a rich food supply for the vibrant community it supports, and the forest itself slowly colonises and reinforces the soft, muddy edge of the land.

The hard coasts of Indonesia are built by more traumatic forces volcanic eruptions and tectonic forces constantly wrack the land and seabed, raising new shorelines.

Here we find the most spectacular examples of coral reef ecosystems on earth. The boundless energy of tropical sun powers the rapid growth of coral communities and allows countless sea creatures to take on a kaleidoscope of diversity, adopting extraordinary disguises and lifestyles to earn their living on the reef.

The cold coastal waters of Northern Asia freeze during winter, forcing coastal dwellers to seek refuge at the edge of the ice. But as the spring sun warms the northern shores, they burst into life.

Salmon arrive in their millions along the shores of the north-west Pacific and the Sea of Okhotsk, and feed a host of predators which have journeyed to the coasts from far afield.

To cross the coast and pass from one world to another from saltwater to freshwater in order to spawn and die, the salmon must first undergo an amazing physiological change and then complete an arduous journey, overcoming powerful river currents and evading determined predators.

The death of the salmon confers a gift on the land, and reminds us of the endless bargain between these two great realms, uniting our vision of the wealth and huge influence of Asia s coasts.』

(Komodo Krupuk Udang)
『I was first introduced to krupuk about 20 years ago by a couple who had lived most of their lives in Singapore. I was happy to find Komodo Krupuk Udang available through Amazon.com and ordered some to test it for quality and taste. I found it to be of the highest quality and having a delicate and delicious taste.』

(rather good)
『The fishy taste is undeniable, but I like fish. There's a sort of whatcha might call "refined" shrimp cracker on the market, and they're good, too, but with enough of a salty taste added that my wife won't join me in eating them. She likes these, however, as do I. Incidentally, we don't really deep fry them: too much fat-intake if we do. We microwave them---cautiously, so as not to burn them much---and then work around the unexpanded fringes. There are lots of ways to spell krupuk, for example kropok, kuropok, etc. When searching for these (or other kinds), that's a good thing to keep in mind.』

(Not what I remember)
『I have been on the search for the shrimp chips my grandmother used to buy and I am still searching.

These in particular are heavy on the fish taste and smell. They also have a weird aftertaste. My dogs actually cowered and ran away when I offered a chip to them!』

『Krupuk Udang or Shrimp Crackers are the essential for Indonesian cooking or just snack time. Uncook shrimp crackers. Net wt: 250g』

『Looking for something that's durable yet elegant? You'll appreciate the natural beauty and rich dark colors of this 2'' thick bamboo board . This is the big brother of our popular 3/4'' bamboo board. Weighing almost 20 pounds, this board is made of solid strips of bamboo, pressed together one layer at a time. One one side is a Chinese standard 19 x 19 Goban, and on the opposite side is a 13 x 13 board. This board is paired with a set of Yunzi professional Go stones, China's finest. If you haven't played with these stones before you'll find it to be a completely different experience than playing with glass or plastic stones. Yunzi stones are beautiful to look at, carry a nice heavy feel, and possess excellent 'snap' qualities. The stones will actually look nicer over time as they absorb moisture and natural oils from your fingertips. The Yunzi stones are matched with a pair of bowls jujube date wood bowls and a vinyl carrying case. Each bowl is hollowed out from a single piece of wood. In addition to their natural beauty, they are highly durable, keep their shape over time and are unaffected by moisture, making jujube one of the best woods for go bowls. The handy carrying case will keep your bowls scratch free and prevent those stones from falling out when moving about. Included is a booklet on how to play go, "The Way to Go", by Karl Baker.』

(Mr. Wood has the answer to end violence in the world)
『I just read about pirates capturing another vessel in Somalia. Some readers see the remedy in one word; Blackwater. Definitely it is getting worst there, it is a crime and not excusable. However we can not excuse ourselves from responsibility either. Blakwater is one word that should be kept out. Education is the right word when really meant to be. It is time that fortunate ones of us to help less fortunate ones instead of stealing their resources. We need to create a better world. Please read the book by John Wood "Leaving Microsoft to Change the World". We need more of John Wood's. For any novice in business Mr. Wood explain Microsoft success principals, for a novice in non-profits he has lot to offer too. I recommend to all to read this book especially now it is really a great bargain.』

(Fascinating and inspiring!)
『I tore right through this book. It takes you on John Wood's journey from being a Microsoft executive on a backpacking trip to the founder of Room to Read, which has affected the lives of over 3 million children in eight 3rd world countries.

There are fun stories of John's personal history, he showed signs of determination and entrepreneurship from a young age. Then there are tales of Microsoft, it was fascinating to read of the discipline and perspective that was expected at Microsoft, and of the personalities (especially Steve Ballmer, the current CEO). There are also glimpses of John's very human side.

John builds communities to make his vision so successful. To raise money, John targets rich communities around the world: San Francisco, Chicago, New York, London, etc., and finds volunteers who live in those cities to fundraise for him.

At the receiving end, when Room to Read provides funds for a library or school they mandate that the community bear half of the cost. Locals provide volunteer labor to build the building, haul the materials through mountain passes, etc. This means that locals have "skin in the game" and become committed to the success of what is being built.

John Wood has figured how to be a conduit of money from wealthy donors around the world directly to the poorest children. He has met this need better than any government. Seeing how John brought his talents to Microsoft and to Room to Read, and has done fantastically at both was fun.

A poignant point for me is that John is just like successful people you've met at college, graduate school, or in the workplace. What he did differently is that he went off the beaten path and did something "game-changing." Yes, he had over a million dollars from stock options that he was able to use to support himself, but so had 10,000 other people who had worked at Microsoft.

Hopefully John will write a sequel, and bring us along as he meets and addresses the challenges as his organization grows. Ok, now it's time for me to go write a check ;-)

(What a wonderful book!)
『Be prepared to want to run away to Katmandu and other foreign locals after reading this excellent story. The writer is real--what he said about Microsoft! He let me into his world. His style captures the countries he visits, his obstacles, and the challenges he has overcome to build schools and libraries in 3rd world countries. I found it fascinating!

This is a great book for anyone contemplating career change, travel to exotic locations (sans room service), and for those who are thinking of a life of service.』

(Good book, but not the great read that it's made out to be)
『This book turned out to be more biographical about the author's journey than it was about practical advice to accomplish the same results. His writing style is somewhat self-absorbed, but there is an interesting story in there if you are willing and able to read between the lines.』

(great inspirational book)
『great book if you are contemplating quitting the rat race and do something you enjoy doing.』
『John Wood discovered his passion, his greatest success, and his life's work--not at business school or leading Microsoft's charge into Asia in the 1990s--but on a soul-searching trip to the Himalayas. Wood felt trapped between an all-consuming career and a desire to do something lasting and significant. Stressed from the demands of his job, he took a vacation trekking in Nepal because a friend had told him, "If you get high enough in the mountains, you can't hear Steve Ballmer yelling at you anymore."

(The lid does not fit on it.)
『The lid doesn't fit on it if you are using the basket. The lid does not have a cut out for the handle and leaves a section uncovered. This steamer is no different then putting a strainer in a pot and putting a lid on it. I returned this the same day UPS dropped it off, I was expecting something much better.』

(I love this cooker)
『I have used this cooker several times already and I love it. I made spaghetti and it turned out great. I browned the meat balls and then added the sauce (I love only having to use one pot for the whole meal). The sauce does not burn onto the sides of the cooker either. Very easy to clean. I can't wait to use it to make more meals. I only wish it was a little bigger, maybe a little wider. But overall, I really like this cooker.』

(Great Product for on the go.)
『Bought this for the camper - wanted to boil pasta and sausages while camping - With the lid on, this got up to a rolling boil quickly, cooked great. A small mess with boil over, so watch for that. The included strainer basket is very low quality - but not what I bought it for. The non-stick coating is great - it cleaned up easily with a sprayer. Great product, does just what I need it to.』

(Presto Multi-Cooker/Steamer)
『The main advantage of this cooker is that it allows one to brown meat, and saute onions etc. before slow cooking. That means one pan for everything; no extra pans to clean. Plus, it's well made, easy to clean, and reliable.』

(disappointment)
『The first word that comes to mind over this cooker/steamer is disappointment. The unit is smaller than the dimensions given and the wall thickness of the unit is substantially less than the older model (10 years older) that I still have. The result is a less satisfying cooking result. It probably will be okay for soups, but for frying and general heat retention for roasts&crockpot meats I'm not at all satisfied.』
『Wow! Here's a cooker that does it all: roasting, steaming, stewing and boiling. Cook meats, grains, veggies and seafood. Great for living spaces with limited kitchen facilities, or for those times when you could use an extra burner or more space in the oven.』

See how John Wood came to start Room to Read and writeLeaving Microsoft to Change the Worldin this video clip: high bandwidth or low bandwidth

Instead of being the antidote to the rat race, that trip convinced John Wood to divert the boundless energy he was devoting to Microsoft into a cause that desperately needed to be addressed. While visiting a remote Nepalese school, Wood learned that the students had few books in their library. When he offered to run a book drive to provide the school with books, his idea was met with polite skepticism. After all, no matter how well-intentioned, why would a successful software executive take valuable time out of his life and gather books for an impoverished school?

But John Wood did return to that school and with thousands of books bundled on the back of a yak. And at that moment, Wood made the decision to walk away from Microsoft and create Room to Read-an organization that has donated more than 1.2 million books, established more than 2,600 libraries and 200 schools, and sent 1,700 girls to school on scholarship-ultimately touching the lives of 875,000 children with the lifelong gift of education.

Leaving Microsoft to Change the Worldchronicles John Wood's struggle to find a meaningful outlet for his managerial talents and entrepreneurial zeal. For every high-achiever who has ever wondered what life might be like giving back, Wood offers a vivid, emotional, and absorbing tale of how to take the lessons learned at a hard-charging company like Microsoft and apply them to one of the world's most pressing problems: the lack of basic literacy.』

John Wood discovered his passion, his greatest success, and his life's work not at business school or helping lead Microsoft's charge into Asia in the 1990s but on a soul-searching trip to the Himalayas. He made the difficult decision to walk away from his lucrative career to create Room to Read, a nonprofit organization that promotes education across the developing world. By the end of 2007, the organization will have established over 5,000 libraries and 400 schools, and awarded long-term scholarships to more than 3,000 girls, giving more than one million children the lifelong gift of education.

If you have ever pondered abandoning your desk job for an adventure and an opportunity to give back, Wood's story will inspire you. He offers a vivid, emotional, and absorbing tale of how to take the lessons learned at a hard-charging company like Microsoft and apply them to the world's most pressing social problems.
