My only dislike is that the song list is nearly identical to "Moonsung", so you would probably not want both discs... 』 (ARTFUL MUSIC) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Sheila Chandras music on the "Weaving my Ancestors Voices" is difinitive in its impact. It is unforgettable as the musical manifestation of a beautiful history of voice and sound. As an artist i use music to paint to and i find this particularly atmospheric and evocative without jarring the soundscape. Meditative and contemplative with universal appeal. Certainly defined for me as one of her great new creations. for all musical tastes. Wendy Bandurski-Miller Sempronius New York』 (Very relaxing) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Sheila Chandra is one of my favorites. Her voice is so smooth and rich. The execution of each note is right in tune. The bols she sings is very interesting, not a favorite of mine, but I do find it amazing that someone can sing like that. If you purchase this CD, I think you'll be pleased.』 (A Voice To Be Reckoned With) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『First, let me say that if you prefer your world music with strong instrumentation over vocals, then this is not the album for you. Sheila Chandra takes her listener's on a musical voyage using almost nothing but her versatile, compelling voice. The instrumentation is made up mostly of drones, and even that is minimal. But if you are a fan of voice, or a cappala work, you will dig this album. Chandra lives up to the title of this disc by weaving eclectic vocal styles from various traditions together, sometimes on the same track, as on the so-so Dhyana and Donalogue. The stronger tracks include Nana/The Dreaming, The Enchantment, and the totally inspired weaving together of Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean. And as a previous reviewer noted, the two Speaking In Tongues tracks have to be heard atleast once, but after that, they really are skippable (thank God for programmable CD players) as they don't offer much in way of asthetic enjoyment. So all in all, the album is hit and miss. It really works best as background music, for relaxation or while surfing the 'net. Of course, Sheila's best was yet to come on ABoneCroneDrone, but you can hear the seeds of that work being planted here on this somewhat experimental disc.』 (Mostly cool) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I purchased this album after hearing Sheila's work on several Makyo albums and because I loved Sacred stones ( it is also on the Trance Planet compilations). This is a great album, running the gamut from Indian vocal Ragas to an amazing blend of Indian and Celtic sounds. As much as I love this album, I wish it was not so varied. It jumps back and forth in tone and tempo which makes it hard to use for mood or meditation. Shifting from raga to ambient tone it a bit jarng either way you go. Still a fantastic album and worth owning.』 『Approaching the voice as an instrument, British-born Indian Sheila Chandra brings an expansive, timeless quality to this collection of improvised songs based on ragas and modern folk music. Most of the tracks, outside of the drone, are unadorned--as is Chandra's pretty voice, simple in its low tone and unaffected in vocal style. Still, Chandra travels to expansive places, reliving her days as Monsoon's lead singer on "Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean." Though Chandra revisits British and Celtic music, her voice is at its strongest when borrowing from traditional Indian vocal technique and ragas. "Bhajan" is a soothing hymn with drone as are "Sacred Stones" and "Om Namaha Shiva," proving Chandra has indeed succeeded in connecting to ancestral voices for a lovely, meaningful album.--Karen K. I really enjoy it, I use it for bellydance.』 (great belly dancing music) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I love the variety of rhythyms on this cd. We use it for several of our choreographies. I have ordered this item several times because I use it so much.』 (Even More Arabian Dance Rhythms) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『A continuation of the "Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms", this CD gives us a third dose of Arabic and Middle Eastern dance music infused with western influences. The result is quite enjoyable, and serves as a good introduction to Arabic music. All the usual suspects are here - Hakim, Amina Annabi, Cheb Mami, Nawal al Zoughbi, Andy, Faudel, Zohar, Cheb Nasro, Shani. New faces appear two, like talented Palestinean artist Simon Shaheen, pop singer Woroud, and the techno beats of Turbo Tabla. If you liked the first two CDs in this series, then this one is another good purchase. So whats the music like? Well, it starts off with Hakim and Cleopatra doing a (quite appropriate) cover of "Walk Like an Egyptian", with Arabic beats. It continues with lots of great Middle Eastern tunes all the way to the end, when we hear a more traditional meditative "Saraab" by Simon Shaheen, one of the greatest names in contemporary Arabic music. Along the way there is a remix of Lebanese pop idol Nawal al Zoughbi, techno-bellydance rhythms from Turbo Tabla, Rai songs from Cheb Nasro and Cheb Mami, an haunting duet between Amina and Zohar, another English pop song from Shani (for those who can't speak Arabic), upbeat Arabic pop from newcomer Woroud, and much more. Everyone on the CD gives a very memorable performance, so if your a fan of Arabic pop this CD will really get you. It's definately worth the purchase. In fact, if you haven't I'd recommend you go out and get the first two CDs as well. These CDs are great for any bellydancer, Arabic music lover, or just someone who wants to expand their understanding of the world. Sure, plenty of great Arabic musicians are left off this CD (and, in fact, the series focuses mostly on pop and rai, leaving out classical and folk music) but its a good starting place if nothing else. Definately a good purchase.』 ("Feel Good" Mix) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I stumbled across this browsing at the store and it was definitely a lucky find. The songs are modern, upbeat and fun and there's a nice mix of different styles. Hakim's orchestra's rendition of "Walk Like An Egyptian" converts it into a better beat for bellydancing. Ramses' "Ajaja" has been used by Petite Jamilla for her double veil performance. Amina's "Un Ange En Paix" is stylish and sexy. "Who's The Fairest?" is a fun club tune with a bellydance beat. The other songs range from sensual to more classic middle eastern style, including Turbo Tabla's techno drumming. The compilation is great for both dancing and listening. I like it for driving to work in the morning or cleaning the house as well as for freestyle bellydancing. Whether you are a bellydancer or just a fan of middle eastern/arabic music, you'll enjoy this CD. Highly recommended.』 (Exciting and Esensual, The Third Time Around) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『First of all, I am not a belly dancer, but you don't have to be a belly dancer to reap the benefits of the energy fun, and sensuality, packed into the thirteen tracks on this CD. Several times I have worked out to it on my elliptical, and can assure you that it provides a good hour or so's worth of inspiration to keep you going. While it has a kind mix of pretty quickly paced songs being followed by somewhat slower songs, the music, voices, and influences vary so much, that things never start to drag or become routine. You have to love Hakim and Irish singer, Carly Hennessy's fun version of, "Walk Like An Egyptian." The old Bangles sort of wiseguy song is both enriched by the addition of traditional instruments and beats, and is also put in its place and expertly tweaked by the singing of Hakim, which is strong and compelling, and is, of course, the real thing. At the end of the song, when he says, "I am Egyptian, come with me," well, you might be inclined, like Marlene Dietrich chasing after Gary Cooper in "Morocco," to throw off your high heels, and follow him into the desert...but instead, you go with the flow of the songs, moving through many moods and musical styles, thus managing to be both a bit familiar, and a lot exotic, and always intriguing. My favorites, along with, "Walk Like An Egyptian," are, "Un Ange En Paix," by Amina and Zohar, And the last song on the CD, "Saraab," by Simon Shaheen. The Amina/Zohar track has a sensuous, restrained pace...maybe a littel reminiscent of Cesaria Evora.perhaps I have an overactive imagination, and she is just singing about her shopping list, but it sets a shadowy, smokey image for me, full of mystery (well, that is for sure!), and a bit of ennui. The accordion, muffled horns, and techno beats seem pretty simple, but they create a mood, that I don't get tired of experiencing, over and over again. I am looking forward to sampling some CDs by these two artists, with the intention of buying. Simon Sheehan's song, "Saraab," is very traditional and languid, and calls to mind a wonderful scene from the old Gene Tierney film, "Sundown," where she is walking slowly across the desert, midriff exposed. If it isn't the exact music used in that scene, it is very close to it. The flute, in particular, is beautiful, but the whole track is so wonderfully uncluttered, so minimal, really, and yet it just draws the listener (at least this one!) into the landscape it creates. What a smart way to end this CD! I will definitely be buying a CD by Shaheen, since that one song is not enough for me, and it will be the perfect music for times when an hour or so of absolutely delicious, exotic music, suggesting burning sands, foreign places, and giving yourself over to a totally different pace, is an essential (essensual?) ingredient. The faster songs, with their many influences (hip hop, reggae, flamenco, to name but a few), all add their fun and energy to the overall winning effect of this third in the Desert Roses series. I enjoy all the Desert Roses CDs,and how they cleverly include one pop hit, with a mainstream artist, on each one; thereby giving you a place to start from, and to be drawn in from, regardless of how unfamiliar you are with Middle Eastern music. The DR CDs are all terrific for my CD changer, when it is set on the shuffle mode, since they make it sound like I have so much more stuff in there, than I really do. They are also a lot of fun to listen to in the car...though they may set the rednecks (urban ones included) to growling!! Note: If you enjoy this CD, you might like to check out "Cairo to Casablanca," another compilation, with a bit less punch than "Desert Roses 3," but beautiful music and voices, nevertheless. "Moroccan Spirit," is another definite treat, for any fan of Middle Eastern music and ambience.』 『 Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms, Vol. 3 > 『 Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms, Vol. 3 > 『 Desert Roses&Arabian Rhythms II > 『 Desert Roses&Arabian Rhythms II > 『 Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms > 『 Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms > 『 Desert Roses, Vol. 4 > 『 Desert Roses, Vol. 4 > 『 Desert Roses, Vol. 5 > 『 Desert Roses, Vol. 5 > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Masque [VHS] > >,Asia Carrera,Alex Sanders,Juli Ashton,Michael J. Forest,Carlo Mucari,Paki Valente,Francesca Ferre,Zdenko Jelcicprice: Asia Vision Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Fair Enough) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Thanks a lot to Video Asia for this releasing. Though it's true that the picture quality is not up to DVD Standard but to me it is fair enough in regard to the selling price. I'm proud to own the DVD by the way. Anyway, in the near future, I hope Video Asia would consider releasing some other rare war movies such as 1) Strike Commando 2) The Walking dead 3) Platoon Leader 4) Field of Fire 5) Crossbone Territory 6) The Devastator』 (More exploitation action films that you'll probably see nowhere else from Video Asia) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is yet another Video Asia release which means that if you know what you're getting- VHS sourced movies on DVD for a small amount of money- you'll be fine with it. If you're going in expecting a major studio release with fancy picture and sound you'll be disappointed. You have to understand that in many cases the company is the only one releasing the films in English or anywhere, the choice is these less than perfect prints or nothing. Most of what Video Asia releases are low budget exploitation films that were made fast and cheap for a buck and which no other company would put money into releasing because the profit margin is so small (so small for get about restoration). I don't mind it having purchased many of the company's other releases (The Grindhouse Experience series of example) The source for these films are clearly video tape since you can see tape wear in a couple of films. For the most part even owing to the source tapes limitations things aren't that bad. The one real problem with a picture is Hell's Heroes (aka Inglorious Bastards 2) since it appears to have had the image cropped in an odd letterbox. I'm guessing that its the result of a non-USA source pre-anamorphic tape that had subtitles at the bottom of the screen (some Asian countries would have letterbox prints with the picture at the top of the screen and subtitles in the black space below.) Its a minor thing even if the picture doesn't quite work with the widescreen TV. The films themselves are good Euro-war films of decidedly B level action and budget level. Hells Heroes (Inglorious 2) is about a break out of prisoners in Viet Nam and how they try to get to freedom before they are retaken by the American army. Its a good looking film with a bit too much talking. Bridge to Hell concerns POWs escaping from the Nazi's in Yugoslavia and ending up fighting with the partisans. Its a good little film that is mindless entertainment. (its uses some footage from another bigger budget film for some of the action scenes.) Apocalypse Mercenaries is about a team of soldier who are put together to fight Nazi's in Yugoslavia. Its a fast moving action film that doesn't have tome to let you think about the silliness of it all. This too has inserted sequences from another war film. Its not always perfect but if you go with it you'll enjoy it. Warbus 2 is an in name only sequel to a better film called Warbus (thats on Video Asia's Grind House Experience Merc collection). the on screen title is actually Afghanistan:The Last Warbus. Its a just okay war film about a green beret going into Afghanistan to get documents hidden on a bus. No it makes no sense and if you let it not make sense its a watchable little film. Personally I'd rather see the first film again, but I didn't hate this. Are the films great? no they are all films for a rainy Sunday on the couch. Did I mind paying for the videotape sourced films? considering I paid about 6 dollars for the DVD which works out to a buck fifty each, no I didn't. Frankly I got four films for what was little more than the price of a rental at Blockbuster (and I know I'll probably watch all but Warbus 2 again). Honestly had this disc not come out I probably would not have seen the films. I like the films and accepted the presentation for what it was. If you want high quality movies in a high quality release look for some other titles. Of you want low budget exploitation films that you'll probably not see any other way and don't mind the bargain basement presentation give it a shot』 (Stay away from this hellish DVD!) ![]() 『I seen this DVD available a week early at my local FYE for $[...] and I was eager to pick it up since I am a fan of the original cult hit The Inglorious Bastards and am looking forward to Quentin Tarintino's upcoming remake. I admit to being suspicious of this product at first, because it looked like a cheap DVD and I figured it might just be a cheap cash in on the upcoming remake, but seeing as it came packed with 3 other war films for a decent price I took the plunge...and now I regret it. The DVD is a doubled sided disc with Apocalypse Mercenaries and Warbus 2 on Side A and IB2: Hell Heroes and Bridge To Hell on Side B. The 2 films on side A feature irremovable Asian subtitles and have pretty lousy audio and video. The Side B films have no subtitles but are equally as bad in the A/V department. Inglorious Bastards 2 seems to really be a late 80's Vietnam War film titled Hell's Heroes and has no connection to the first film other than Fred 'The Hammer' Williamson appearing in both movies. The aspect ratio on Hell's Heroes is very odd...there is a thin black bar at the top of the screen and then a small box of the film on top of a massive black bar that fills up the rest of the screen. Even if you mess around with your TV menu to fit the image to fill the screen, it is still a horrible transfer. I'm not sure how rare any of these films are, but I was never aware of a 'sequel' to Inglorious Bastards and this looks like the only way to get it on DVD. I rarely write reviews on Amazon, but I felt compelled to warn others about this poorly done DVD before they consider purchasing this. For those looking forward to the new Inglorious Basterds, I suggest checking out the original from 1978 which is a far superior DVD than this ca$h in and is now also available on Blu-Ray. Edit: I have to admit I didn't bother watching any of the films in their entirety due to the horrible transfers, so I can't really comment on the merits of the films themselves other than they all appear to be B grade war films. I love B movies and Exploitation cinema (especially from the 80's) but I can't stand Dollar Store quality DVD's. 』 『Studio: First Look Home Entertain Release Date: 08/18/2009 Run time: 360 minutes Rating: R』 『 Inglorious Bastards 2: Hell Heroes > 『 Inglorious Bastards 2: Hell Heroes > 『 The Inglorious Bastards > 『 The Inglorious Bastards > 『 Inglorious Bastards (3-Disc Special Edition) > 『 Inglorious Bastards (3-Disc Special Edition) > 『 Eagles Over London > 『 Eagles Over London > 『 Night of the Creeps > 『 Night of the Creeps > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Dangerous Child > 『 Dangerous Child > 『 Terror in the Family > 『 Terror in the Family > 『 No One Would Tell (True Stories Collection TV Movie) > 『 No One Would Tell (True Stories Collection TV Movie) > 『 If Someone Had Known (True Stories Collection TV Movie) > 『 If Someone Had Known (True Stories Collection TV Movie) > 『 Just Ask My Children > 『 Just Ask My Children > 『 Death of a Cheerleader (True Stories Collection TV Movie) >

Never mind that the Phantom's costume was awful. I gave this movie two stars. One star goes to the cover art, the other a combination of Asia Argento and the chandelier scene, though even that scene would've been better had he a disfigured face or a mask.』 (Hideous and unbelievably ridiculous) ![]() 『Raised by rats?? It make a perfect horror theme and it's been done so many times. I called Argento the master of the kill because each one of his movies usually has one awesome kill. That all being said, this movie should have been a pure winner. Well, it's not. The opera scenes are beautiful, the music is good if not standard, but the story sucks. The Phantom is raised by rats and his face is not scarred at all. The one problem I had was during the kills the screen just turns black and all you hear is screams and thuds. I have no idea why they would do that but oh well. Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera is not the best version of the film by far. It looks worse than a vhs tape. Hopefully this will get released in widescreen with a better transfer.』 (The Phantom of Rat Bohemia) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Good gawd almighty! That was my first reaction once I'd finished watching Italian horror maestro, Dario Argento's version of the oft-filmed "Phantom of the Opera". I think it's safe to say that there's never been another "Phantom" quite like it. It starts out as a sort of twisted variation on the Tarzan legend, with an abandoned baby in a foreign environment being rescued and raised by the resident wildlife. As most people know, with Tarzan it was apes who did the child-rearing. But it may come as something of a surprise to learn that with the Opera Phantom, it's, er, um, rats doing the parenting. At least according to Argento. Which begs any number of questions, none the least of which are: how did the rats nourish and feed the baby, change his diapers, bathe him, teach him to speak English, and play the piano, for crying out loud? Of course, the rats are telepathic, as is the Phantom, so I guess that could explain it. However, that's only the beginning of a film that goes so far over-the-top that I suspect it's still in orbit. The gore and violence, a staple of most Argento films, are present, but not in the abundance that might be expected; there's a decapitation and a tongue being ripped out, in a grotesque parody of a French kiss, and a few more nasty deaths but, all things considered, it could have been worse. What's not a staple of Argento films is the graphic sex and nudity, (which I'm normally fine with) that includes a bordello scene in which the Phantom's nemesis, Raoul, lies on a chaise lounge, wrapped only in a towel, sucking on a hookah, while surrounded by a phalanx of nightmarish, Fellini-esque characters, all naked and looking like they stopped by the baths enroute to a "Night of the Living Dead" shoot. When a frisky prostitute takes a nose dive beneath Raoul's towel, he's not pleased--he's saving himself for heroine, Christine--and he shoves her away, with no little show of force. There are two vile, yet somehow Disneyesque ratcatchers, who tool around the sewers beneath the opera house in what looks like a modified dune buggy that snatches up rats and...oh, don't ask. At about the time that the Phantom unbuttoned his shirt and let some of the more amorous rats run across his chest and nipples, I started getting bug-eyed. When he got excited and began undoing his pants to allow them access to his manly business, my hair was standing on end. At that moment, I knew that this movie had gone so far over the mark that it wasn't ever coming back. And yet, I found myself hoping that these sex partner-rats weren't the Phantom's mum and dad, because that would be just...eeeeuuuuwwwww. And then, of course, a little voice rose within me and said: they're rats, idiot! Aside from the rats, there are some pretty good performances, believe it or not. Julian Sands is appropriately weird as the murderous, yet romantic, Phantom of the Opera. I was disturbed that he didn't wear a mask (disfigured or not) but his long, stringy, greasy hair was fairly eerie in itself. As demonstrated in earlier efforts such as "Warlock", Sands is adept at playing haughty, mysterious creeps who are vaguely aristocratic and mostly evil. I think if he had portrayed Lestat in "Interview With the Vampire" (reportedly Anne Rice's original intention), it would have been an entirely different movie; there's a certain sexual ambiguity that Sands projects onscreen that would have been entirely suited to that character (and which Tom Cruise didn't have). Plus he looks good naked. He'd have made a perfect "Dorian Grey", as well. Argento's daughter, Asia, assays the role of Christine, the sopranic understudy who becomes the object of the titular character's affections. Asia Argento doesn't seem to be sleepwalking so much here as she has in other of her father's films. She's a lively and passionate heroine who is confused by the two men vying for her charms. That she beds down with the Phantom on more than one occasion, further muddles the poor girl. These scenes could have had a genuine erotic power (Argento looks good naked, too) and they are well filmed, but I just kept thinking of what the randy Phantom had been up to with the rats in his pants and...oh brother, I just hope he showered before joining Ms. Argento in bed. As rival, Raoul, Andrea di Stefano looks a little like Prince in "Purple Rain" (only with long, stringy hair--what is it with these guys?)--he's brave, but seemingly addled (perhaps by too much toking on the hookah); by the time, he attempts to save the day, he's moving at a snail's pace through the tunnels beneath the Paris Opera House, looking debauched and disheveled and almost as crazed as the Phantom. Basically a remake (or re-imagining) of Argento's much better "Opera", "Phantom" is a freaky, beautifully filmed head trip that, in spite of its many difficulties and ludicrous plot developments, has a certain queasy charm that will definitely not appeal to some. Dario Argento is an imaginative creative genius who seems incapable of being reigned in, but what would he be otherwise? I sort of like him like this. 』 『Studio: Peace Arch Home Entertain Release Date: 07/13/2004 Run time: 100 minutes Rating: Ur』 『Leaden horror costumer that takes its tenuous starting point from the classic Gaston Leroux novel of the same name. The twist in this variation is that the Phantom was raised by telepathic rats in the subterranean caverns beneath the opera house. Thus our feral Phantom (Julian "Ratboy" Sands) develops an obsessive love for up-and-coming diva Christine (Asia Argento), and sets about to seduce her to his dark, rodent existence. Although beautifully photographed, with lots of ornate period detail to catch the eye, this is largely a by-the-numbers supernatural horror story with scant gory set pieces as diversions. Fans of Dario Argento will yell "Rats!" and all else will merely shrug. And why are the rats telepathic, anyway? Screenwriting credits go to Gerard Brach, best known for his many collaborations with Roman Polanski, most notablyRepulsion. However, none of his absurd sense of humor comes through in this film, which really needs it. A shame all around. Since the country is so large, so old and so densely populated, he had to address many more topics than his own astute observations: history, economy, politics, culture, and pollution. And he hardly scratched the surface. He reported on many of the obligatory locations and major cities, stopping in [pre-Olympic] Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and seeing the Great Wall, the Terra Cotta Warriors, the Forbidden City, and many, many pagodas. My favorite part of his tour was definitely Tibet, which sparked my imagination with its beauty as a sacred bastion nestled in the Himalayas, but also elicited my sympathy due to its recent tumultuous history. Of course, commentary on the cuisine throughout the country was essential, but Troost's most adamant remarks were about the stifling pollution in the urban areas. This of course is a result of the economic surge, which is due to so many factors, political and otherwise, that Troost attempts to address. Overall, his main emphasis is that China, a country with no less than 1.3 billion people, is a rapidly evolving beast that is in the position to make a huge impact on the rest of the world.』 (Really informative and well-written) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Not having read any of his other books, I had no preconceived notion of how this book might turn out when I started reading it. Good stories and well thought out descriptions of his travels throughout the country, with great tidbits about less savory aspects of the culture, including hippie retreats, the prevalence of the sex industry, and air pollution. I really enjoyed his account of the climb up Tai Shan, the most famous mountain in China. I came to a better understanding of the society of China, as a place like any other with upsides and downsides. From Beijing and its blitzes of flying phlegm--and girls who lend new meaning to "Chinese take-out"--to the legendary valley of Shangri-La (as officially designated by the Party), Troost learns that his very survival may hinge on his underdeveloped haggling skills and a willingness to deployRollerball-grade elbows over a seat on a train. Embrace the Chinese. If you love it, it will love you back. True, you may find yourself perplexed by what resides on your plate. You may even be appalled. The Chinese have an expression:We eat everything with four legs except the table, and anything with two legs except the person. They mean it too. And so you may find yourself in a restaurant in Guangzhou contemplating the spicy cow veins; or the yak dumplings in Lhasa, or the grilled frog in Shanghai, or the donkey hotpot in the Hexi Corridor, or the live squid on the island of Putuoshan. And you may not know, exactly, what it is youre supposed to do. Should you pluck at this with your chopsticks? The meal may seem so very strange. True, you may be comfortable eating a cow, or a pig, or a chicken, yet when confronted with a yak or a swan or a cat, you do not reflexively think of sauces and marinades. The Chinese do however. And so you should eat whatever skips across your table. It is here where you can experience the complexity of China. And you will be rewarded. Very often, it is exceptionally good. And when it is not, it is undoubtedly interesting. And really, when traveling what more can one ask for. So go on. Eat as the locals do. However, should you find yourself confronted with a heaping platter of Cattle Penis with Garlic, youre on your own.2.To really see China, go to the market. Any market will do. This is where China lives and breathes. It is here where you will find the sights, sounds and smells of China. And it is in a Chinese market where you will experience epic bargaining. The Chinese excel at bargaining. They live and breathe it. It is an art; it is a sport. It is, above all, nothing personal. If you do not parry back and forth, you will be regarded as a chump, a walking ATM machine, a carcass to be picked over. And so as you peruse the cabbage or consider the silk, be prepared to bargain. The objective, of course, is to obtain theChinese price. You will, however, never actually receive the Chinese price. It is the holy grail forlaowais--or foreigners--in China. Your status as a laowai is determined by how proximate your haggling gets you to the mythical Chinese price. But you will never obtain the Chinese price. Accept this. But if youre very, very good, and you bargain long and hard, and if you are lucky and catch your interlocutor on an off day, you may, just may, receive thespecial price. Consider yourself fortunate.3.Travelers are often told to get off the beaten path, to take the road less traveled, to march to a different drum. You don't need to do this in China. The road well-traveled is a very fine road. The French Concession in Shanghai is splendid. The Forbidden City is a wonder of the world. So too the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an. Indeed, the Chinese say so themselves. There is much to be seen in places that are often seen. And yet... China is not merely a country. It is not a place defined by sights. It is a world upon itself, a different planet even. And to see it--to feel it--means leaving that well-traveled road. And China is an excellent place for wandering. From the monasteries of Tibet to the rainforests of Yunnan Province and onward through the deserts of Xinjiang to the frozen tundra of Heilongjiang Province, China offers a vast kaleidoscope of people and terrain unlike anywhere else on Earth. This may seem intimidating to the China traveler. Will there be picture menus in the Taklamakan Desert? (No.) Is Visa accepted in Inner Mongolia? (Not likely.) Still, one should move beyond the Great Wall. And if you can manage to cross six lanes of traffic in Beijing, you can manage the slow train to Kunming.4.Hell is a line in China. You are so forewarned.5.Manners are important in China. How can this be, you wonder? You have, for instance, experienced a line in China. Your ribs have been pummeled. You have been trampled upon by grandmothers who are not more than four feet tall. You have learned, simply by queuing in the airport taxi line, what it is like toeat bitter, an evocative Chinese expression that conveys suffering. This does not seem upon first impression to be a country overly concerned with prim etiquette. But it is. True, hawking enormous, gelatinous loogies is perfectly acceptable in China. And a good belch is fine as well. And picking your teeth after dinner is a sign of urbane sophistication. But this does not mean that manners are not taken seriously in China. Its just that they are different in China. And so feel free to spit and burp, but do not even think of holding your chopsticks with your left hand. You will be regarded as an ill-mannered rube. So watch your manners in China. But learn them first. 』 『The bestselling author ofThe Sex Lives of Cannibalsreturns with a sharply observed, hilarious account of his adventures in Chinaâa complex, fascinating country with enough dangers and delicacies to keep him, and readers, endlessly entertained. Maarten Troost has charmed legions of readers with his laugh-out-loud tales of wandering the remote islands of the South Pacific. When the travel bug hit again, he decided to go big-time, taking on the worldâs most populous and intriguing nation. InLost on Planet China,Troost escorts readers on a rollicking journey through the new beating heart of the modern world, from the megalopolises of Beijing and Shanghai to the Gobi Desert and the hinterlands of Tibet. Lost on Planet Chinafinds Troost dodging deadly drivers in Shanghai; eating Yak in Tibet; deciphering restaurant menus (offering local favorites such as Cattle Penis with Garlic); visiting with Chairman Mao (still dead, very orange); and hiking (with 80,000 other people) up Tai Shan, Chinaâs most revered mountain. But in addition to his trademark gonzo adventures, the book also delivers a telling look at a vast and complex country on the brink of transformation that will soon shape the way we all work, live, and think. As Troost shows, while we may be familiar with Yao Ming or dim sum or the cheap, plastic products that line the shelves of every store, the real China remains a worldâindeed, a planet--unto itself. Maarten Troostbrings China to life as youâve never seen it before, and his insightful, rip-roaringly funny narrative proves that once again he is one of the most entertaining and insightful armchair travel companions around.』 『 Lost on Planet China: One Man's Attempt to Understand the World's Most Mystifying Nation > 『 Lost on Planet China: One Man's Attempt to Understand the World's Most Mystifying Nation > 『 Getting Stoned with Savages: A Trip Through the Islands of Fiji and Vanuatu > 『 Getting Stoned with Savages: A Trip Through the Islands of Fiji and Vanuatu > 『 The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific > 『 The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific > 『 My Mercedes is Not for Sale: From Amsterdam to Ouagadougou...An Auto-Misadventure Across the Sahara > 『 My Mercedes is Not for Sale: From Amsterdam to Ouagadougou...An Auto-Misadventure Across the Sahara > 『 The Bird Man and the Lap Dancer: Close Encounters with Strangers > 『 The Bird Man and the Lap Dancer: Close Encounters with Strangers > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Flyboys: A True Story of Courage > 『 Flyboys: A True Story of Courage > 『 Flags of Our Fathers (Movie Tie-in Edition) > 『 Flags of Our Fathers (Movie Tie-in Edition) > 『 Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account of World War II's Greatest Rescue Mission > 『 Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account of World War II's Greatest Rescue Mission > 『 The Complete Idiot's Guide to World War II, 2nd Edition > 『 The Complete Idiot's Guide to World War II, 2nd Edition > 『 Flyboys: A True Story of Courage > 『 Flyboys: A True Story of Courage > 『 Flyboys: A True Story of Courage > James Bradley

I was hesitant at first, mainly because I had seen the atrocity that is "Flags of our Fathers" directed by Clint Eastwood, based off of Bradley's first book. And I will admit, In the beginning I kept thinking "What does any of this have to do with anything?" But as I read on, it became more clear and the info. that he gives in the beginning helps you understand the events that happen later in this book. This book gets you emotionally attached to all of the characters you are introduced to. I think I cried about... Three or four times while reading this. It's a heartbreaking story about boys, not men, who are sent to war where they will either become men, or die trying. I've read some of the reviews below that said Bradley is anti-American. 1) He IS American. 2) His father fought in WWII. I seriously doubt he is anything BUT patriotic. 3) He was trying not to be biased. He didn't want to make it look like he was bashing the Japanese and then glorifying the American's, who did some questionable things themselves. It's a fact that we, "we" being American's, committed war crimes. We killed prisoners, we gave women chocolate bars for sex, we killed innocent people, it's war. Everyone commits those crimes. Yes, the Japanese were by far the worst. No doubt, but Bradley didn't want his book to sound biased, okay? Leave him alone, this book isn't biased towards anybody, move on with your lives. I, for one, am going to buy this book and make my kids read it when I have them and they are old enough. It teaches a lesson and keeps these boy's memories alive.』 (Eye Opening) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Where do I start? I enjoyed "Flags of Our Fathers" immensely so I figured I'd give Bradley another shot. I'm glad I did. I'm not crazy about how he portrays America's war effort at times but, he seems to be fair and takes into account the zeitgeist of the era. I am at times both disgusted and proud of our boys in green. My dad served in the Pacific theater and was stationed in New Guinea. He would rarely talk about the war and now I understand why. Bradley's book portrays war for what it is, hell. At any rate, if you're looking for a sugar coated version of American History please pass this book by as you will be thoroughly disappointed. However, if you're looking for one of the most honest looks at the real history of the war then I invite you to read and totally enjoy this book. 』 (Well written, but horrible anti-US prattle, poorly researched) ![]() 『The first third of the books is a non-stop anti-American tirade. For the author, every vice of the Japanese imperial militarist culture is directly inherited from America and learned from American "imperialist" actions in the Pacific (even though the US lacked any concession in China, and had no Pacific territory until after 1898). According to him, the Japanese were only imitating the Americans when it came to brutality, torture, and territory hungry imperialism. His implication is the Japanese can't be held responsible for their atrocities, because they were taught to do it by the Americans (despite the fact the British and Germans primarily trained the Japanese militarily as they leapt into the industrial age). The author specifically singles out (over 40 pages) US activities in the Philippines as proof of the favored Yankee pastime of bayoneting babies. Of course, there is some context missing; he only refers to isolated incidents on Samar during which atrocities were committed on both sides over a very short time. He conveniently ignores thousands of counter examples over five years where US forces took extreme pains and great additional risk to minimize civilian casualties, not to mention all the humanitarian efforts on other islands. Perhaps the Japanese militarists, who the author implies wouldn't hurt a fly until they learned brutality from Americans, only read about the battles in Samar. Another truly bizarre and absurd aspect of the book is the author's attempt to outline a chain of events demonstrating the US government always sought to acquire Chichi Jima (the island that is supposed to be the subject of the book), and the Japanese were therefore totally justified in being particularly defensive of American presence on the island. To support this fantastic allegation, he points to obscure legislation in congress which sought to establish a coaling station at numerous locations throughout the world, including Chichi Jima. While that never became law, I guess he assumes the Japanese had their "man in Washington" following the threatening bill, during the Meiji reign, and every Japanese soldier to through 1945 was taught about this effrontery...yeah, right. He then points out that various US ships in the late 19th Century stopped and used the island for shelter, while it was otherwise uninhabited. Apart from not even rising to the level of circumstantial `evidence' to support his accusation, he never provides any support to show the Japanese were aware of these events, or more importantly that their opinion and actions were changed by them. ...but wasn't the book supposed to be about how some US flyers were made prisoners and treated toward the end of the war on a remote island? Yeah, I thought so too...apparently the author became lost during his early rant. He does manage to get to that...eventually. One disturbing window into the author's method is shown in the photos of him with former President GHW Bush (41). The caption and juxtaposition of the photos clearly suggest President Bush was involved in the research and supports the author's conclusion. In fact, this is simply not true...neither are most of the "facts" used to support his opinions as expressed in the book. The point is, while Bradley might be a gifted writer (his prose is certainly readable), he is a frustrated American-hating revisionist embittered by his father's experiences and perceived injustices. He is not a historian and is clearly incapable of scholarly research or serious historical analysis, choosing to selectively take from discredited politically correct revisionist texts that support his preconceived notions, while ignoring libraries full of legitimate sources.』 (Horrible revisionist American hating prattle) ![]() 『The first third of the books is a non-stop anti-American tirade. He would probably regard Hitler to be morally equivalent to Churchill or Roosevelt. He clearly has no military experience and copies experiences from other sources. An example of his many glaring erros: in chapter 12 he refers to the, "flight deck ... was an incredibly dangerous place" with, "volatile jet fuel that could burst into flames..." Funny, he never mentions the WWII jet planes in use on Navy ships. Aviation fuel is extremely volatile while jet fuel is basically kerosene and not nearly as volatile. The author weaves together a cast of characters and then follows them through the 76 hours of hell which ensued in the battle for Tarawa. Rather than give a detached view of the battle which reports on advances made by units here and there, Wukovits tells the story of the battle from almost an entirely personal level via interviews and previously published sources. There is even some of the story told from the Japanese perspective, which is exceedingly rare since most Japanese troops didn't survive the battle.
