(The versatile alphabet pan) 『This is an incredibly versatile pan that is only limited by your imagination! I have been doing all kinds of cakes for about 30+ years, including wedding cakes, and while I found this pan to be rather expensive, I also realized that I could do just about ANYTHING with it! I would suggest that if you plan on spelling out someone's name, or a long word, that you get two pans; that way, you can be baking one and getting another cake ready to go into the oven at the same time. It is costly at the beginning, but the amount of time that you save in the long run will be worth it. The only thing that I wish it had were some blocks that were triangles that could be substituted for the entire square. Otherwise, it is great, and I am very pleased that I got two of them!』 『Create birthday, anniversary and special occasion cakes from any cake mix or homemade recipe. Arranging 2 inch square blocks on grid imprinted on the bottom of the pan, you can form any letter or number combination. Includes instruction booklet to create novelty cakes and every letter. simply follow the diagrams in the book. This pan is versatile for all occasions and has diagrams for 14 inch or 10 inch letters and numbers. 14 inches x 8 1/2 inches pan comes with 12 blocks.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Disappointing vaccum for a number of reasons!) 『I bought this vacuum for its many features and brand reputation. I was very disappointed in both. The vacuum is very top heavy and tips over at the slightess touch. I have a few bruises and my walls a few scratches and dents! The retractable cord performs sporadically. The dirt cup needs to be emptied more often than I would have thought based on its size, but the vacuum begins to lose suction power if you don't empty often. I have tile and hardwood floors and the vacuum does not perform as well on them as indicated that it would. You have to make many passes to pick up the debris.
The attachments are ok, but do not stay in place on the vacuum when not in use. I hot glued the power roller holder onto the handle!!!
I wish I had returned it when I purchased it. My search for a decent upright vacuum will continue.』
(Too bad the units is SO unstable needs a recall!) 『I went through 3 other vacuums before buying this one and I am completely happy with it EXCEPT .........and this is a HUGE EXCEPT: The unit is so unstable it tips over constantly. Very little tension in the wrong direction with the cord or hose and the unit is tipped over. I don't know if this is bad engineering or it just needs to be heavier but it falls into walls and makes a mark- falls over onto kids, dogs, cats you name it. In view of this issue- which I really feel is a safety issue I would not recommend the unit. Next time I will find one with the positive features I do like but it has to be stable.』
(Hoped for more from Panasonic) 『My experience with Panasonic has been pretty good. Unfortunately, they let me down with this item. It's just not well designed. I do NOT recommend it
main issues:
The cord pulley system absolutely stinks and looses it's tension after a month. It's not balanced well and tips over very easily. The dirt cup clips don't clip anymore so i've had several bad dirty accidents trying to empty it. And now, after about a year, the damn hose just came apart. literally ripped open right where the attachments go. So, it's done... Very, very disappointed.
However, it is quiet, I'll give it that much.』
(Love It!) 『for the price this is one of the best cleaners i have ever used, i couldn't believe my eyes, the amount of of gunk that was in my carpet, the chamber was half full!! try it you will like it!!』
(WEIRD DESIGN) 『I have owned the Panasonic AeroSpin for about one month.
The Good: The motor fan is last in the air flow chain, so dirt cannot be blown into the air. The powerful suction drives the turbine brush well. The extension hose extends about 10 feet. I got it here on Amazon new for $100 total with free shipping.
The Bad: Like everyone else says, the Panasonic AeroSpin is HEAVY (I am a fit 160 pound male). Tipping over backwards easily might be a problem if it falls on something valuable. The self rewind cord is spring powered and requires some assistance. By the way... the cord manually powers filter cleaning, pulling on the cord causes the filter to spin. The small wheels make rolling more difficult. The Panasonic AeroSpin is made by faceless workers in some undisclosed location in China who will not benefit from your money, you will never meet them or even chat with them on the Internet.
The Ugly: I cannot help but wonder about this one. Everything you vacuum goes through the extension hose. That reduces efficiency and prevents removal of the heavy extension hose while floor vacuuming. That might increase risk of damage to the extension hose since everything passes through it. And a damaged extension hose (however it might happen) means no more vacuum cleaner. Does any other vacuum cleaner suck everything through the extension hose during normal floor vacuuming?
It's a Mystery: Take a look at the Flash Player promo of this Panasonic AeroSpin vacuum cleaner. If you already own it, or you have seen complete pictures, notice that the beater brush area hose that sends air to the extension hose does not exist in the promo. Had Panasonic not figured out how to get the air from the beater brush to the vacuum cleaner body before the promo was made?』 『12 amp bagless upright vacuum cleaner with electronic dirt sensorAeroSpin technology automatically removes dirt from filterBare floor/carpet selection; on-board tools for above-floor cleaningDual HEPA filtration system; large-capacity anti-static dirt cupMeasures 16 by 13-1/2 by 36-1/6 inches; 1-year limited warranty』

I'm a pretty average American. I don't play an instrument, don't speak a foreign language, don't spend my days living an exotic lifestyle.
And I've purchased this album 3 times. The first time I picked it up in a bargain bin on a whim. When I lost that one, I purchased a used copy for $35.00 from a guy in Canada. When that one became too scratched, I purchased this digital version.
Absolutely, without a doubt, worth every penny.
Yes, it' "world" music. Yes, they sing in a language that isn't English. Yes, they use non-western instruments that sound kind of different. Yes, the songs are really long.
And Yes, YES, this album is one of the most amazing listening experiences I've ever had. I don't know how many times I've listened to it, but it must be in the hundreds by now.
It's difficult to describe what listening to this album is like, especially if you're unfamiliar. But for me, it was like listening to Muddy Waters for the first time. Till then I had listened mostly to the radio. Top 40, classic rock, hard rock, RnB. Whatever. But when I listened to Muddy, it was like finding a sunlit plaza after spending a long time in a room lit by flourescent lights. It was heartfelt. It was raw, simple, powerful. And you had no doubt it was performed by someone who lived and breathed music, and who made performing it a way of life.
That's what this album is like.
Give it a chance. You won't be disappointed.』
(Can't Be Beat!) 『I bought this MP3 CD after reading the reviews here and am happy to report that I am not one bit disappointed. Nusrat CDs are particularly hard to buy because many of the CDs simply recycle previously released material and yet others list the songs with fictitious anglicized names that make the qawwalis unrecognizable. This CD is for the connoisseur. Nusrat is at his peak here. The performances are raw and the sound quality is top notch. Since Nusrat achieved growing fame later in life, many of his later CDs actually contain material that was recorded when he was past his prime. Not so on this CD. For those who are looking for a lighter introduction to the qawwali genre or to Nusrat himself, I suggest the highly-produced (perhaps even over-produced) Mustt Mustt or Ecstacy (remixed rather well by Bally Sagoo).』
(Nusrat sings only to Allah now but we can all still hear him on earth) 『My heart sings what my mouth cannot whenever I listen to Nusrat, his music can never be matched, his voice stretches human limits because he truly sings with all angels, prophets, and martyrs in heaven. Shahen-Shah has Allah, Mohammed, Char, Yaar which is absolutely enchanting and stands out in this compilation. I dare the listener not to sway, dance, and sing with Nusrat as he sings in Shahen-Shah with all body, soul, and mind. There is nothing but you and Nusrat's singing. Shahen-Shah is a brief but good representation of Nusrat's immortal legacy. Shahen-Shah must be in the collection of anyone who listens to Nusrat.』
(Inspiring) 『...and particularly good to pop into your CD player and listen to while driving across the desert at night.』
(Voice of God) 『Having grown up with Led Zeppelin, the Who and being a fan of modern artists like Bruce Springsteen and Co., I was somewhat surprised when a rock obsessed friend of mine gave me Shahen-Shah to listen to in September 2005. His words were "man this is freaky". Thinking it was some middle eastern music of a large man I put this CD into my CD player and well, what can I say? I have listened to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in some form or another for the last 9 months every day.
Make no mistake. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (the Shahen-Shah himself)is the best vocalist of the 20th century and were it not for his untimely, tragic death in 1997, he would be revered all around the world today. How different the world would be post 9/11 etc with this man around to sing and make it all better. If God (whoever he is) could choose someone to sing on his behalf, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Nusrat would be it.
Traditional Qawwali is raw, repetitive, rythmnic and long. "Shahen-Shan" provides a perfect snapshot into this genre of music (for those who are novice listeners) and also the deep spirituality that is associated wth hearing NFAK sing. And then there is the Nusrat factor itself. How scary it must have been to see this musical monument sing live. It is the greatest regret in my life that I discovered him too late. His improvisations, voice, control and charisma that is evident just by listening to him is amazing.
If there were more than five stars, I'd give it more. Nusrat is the best ever. If you haven't heard him, you are missing out.』 『It's difficult to escape the tight, almost rushed feeling characteristic of some of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's studio recordings. Unlike theQawwali: The Vocal Art of the Sufisseries, where the party takes its luxurious time in immersing itself in praising Allah, studio-recorded Nusrat can often feel rushed, as if the party was singing qawwali for the sake of the recording rather than for the sake of religious praise. Thankfully, 1989'sShahen-Shahis different. With Nusrat's voice in fine form and the recording providing the right touch of reverb, this CD leads listeners through an outstanding sample of qawwali. Nusrat's improvisational vocal work on "Kehna Ghalat Ghalat To Chhupana Sahi Sahi" is mind-boggling, and the ensemble is outstanding for the wall of beautiful melody it creates. Rich with spirit and grace.--Karen Karleski』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Pure unadulterated NFAK at his best-) 『The very first track Too Karemi Man Kamina Barda Am may be the purest, best thing Nusrat and company ever did. It alone is worth the price of the double cd set. It embodies sufi devotion and spiritual intoxication. Thank God Michael Brooks did not get his paws on these tracks- for those who disagree, I submit without any 'Imho' that those folks don't "get" what NFAK was and is about....it transcends religions, cultures- Simple vocals accompanied by handclaps, handmade drums- the harmonium is likely the only thing that couldn't have been used thousands of years ago.....』
(A Sufi is at his peak just before dying...) 『A Sufi is at his peak just before dying as death does not imply the end of the line to him, but the meeting with the Beloved. Among the tracks included in this final recording there is one dedicated to Khwaja Mo'inuddin Chishti, who was the most important Sufi living on the subcontinent of Indo-Pakistan. What makes this recording so valuable are the translations of all the songs and the printed original (sometimes in) Persian text. If you compare the printed Persian text with the handwritten text of Nusrat himself, you can see that they differ a little bit and that he of course follows the handwritten text.
There are several cd's of Nusrat which are without importance from the Sufi point of view as they would never be used in the musical meetings of the Sufis. This selection could however be used during the so-called sama' meetings of the Sufis. Perhaps it would be thus that in a real Sufi musical gathering less ornamentation would be appropriate and of course in such a place the qawwal is not the centre of attention, but nevertheless this selection is quite good!

(Nusrat at the top of his game) 『I bought this wondering whether his ultimate recording sessions would yield a feeble product and reveal him to be in ill health and poor spirits. I couldn't have been farther from the truth. This is without a doubt one of the most energetic, uptempo, intense and monstrous recordings he ever put forth. His ensemble was never tighter; the tabla player is entirely sympathetic, the harmonium constantly by his side with every sudden new direction into which Nusrat takes the group, and his supporting singers always match him but never overshadow. His voice is strong, and he was just as capable of belting as he ever had been, though he does show restraint at times. The production is perfect: every element occupies a different section of the frequency spectrum, and the ambiance is entirely dry, which provides for an immediate, up close recording. Rick Rubin did a fine job of knowing how to capture his group shiningly without any gimmicks. Of all his albums that he released, this is the traditional set that I will return to and listen to most often.』
(a fantastic recording) 『don't listen to the guy below; the vocals are all excellent. it's a very warm and intimate recording. I've listened to many of his recordings and this is as strong an outing as you will find ... the recording studio was a very large open room full of indian rugs. so everyone is sitting very comfortably on pillows or rugs. the tabla player rocks! having I believe 6 second level or backup or side singers makes for some very cool sounds...you can pick up in alot of spots how much they are following nusrat's lead and there are absolutely no [...] ups. just alot of changing gears... and thankfully this is 'live in the studio' so no annoying applause....I especially like how the songs end with the singers just winding down like they are running out of air and they must just slump over at the end and rest because of the great amount of energy released from the 14 to 17 minute length of the songs in many of his live recordings in the u.s the audience is applauding before the songs are actually over...only in america folks...which only proves they were not really listening to what was being sung... whether they actually understood the words is of secondary importance whether you find this one new or used its worth it』
(Ok but....) 『Being a big fan of Nusrat's, I have listened to many of his recordings. Many have been brilliant, but i cannot say the same about this one. The album contains very meaningful and emotional songs, as well as religious. However, they are not very good as far as Nusrat's voice goes. The title is 'The Final Studio Recordings', so I asume that they were recorded during the end of Nusrat's career and life. Therefore, he was in ill health. This explains they poor quality of voice. But obviously it does not matter, the Ustad has proved what he had to, the fact that he WAS the BEST!』

This one take me back to that crazy time when things Indian were extremely exotic... but the music here is still pretty good. Shankar was a man who once transcended cultures. It was all very exciting back then.
Previn is good too. Hey, if you want some more wacky 70's tracks check out the synth music Previn composed for Rollerball. Groovy yet with some musical merit. Too bad you can't buy the individual tracks as MP3 :-(』
(Reminiscent of the West Meets East Album) 『If you are only sampling Ravi then you may wan to buy the "West Meets East" Album. This makes a good second; yet it is still worthy of five stars. The mixture of eastern instruments and western structure show up in this album. This is as much Andre Previn as it is Ravi. It is soothing yet carries a predictable tune. Many hybrids as these pieces carry the plus from both cultures. And Ravi does an excellent job of bridging. If you are a purist then you may want to pass over this album. Personally I could keep it on continuous play.

(this is orchestral classical music; not just ragas) 『Very satisfying! Great recording of an inspired piece of music. First saw it performed live and have enjoyed the recording since. This is not really getting you into Indian classical music. Rather this is a well-written, well-orchestrated piece of classical music for classical music lovers (not Paul McCartney-pretend or Billy Joel-pretend), but with the featured instrument and themes being based on traditional sitar style. Truly utilizes the characteristics and beauty of the sitar in combination with a normal symphony orchestra as a concerto should.
The music is engaging with much of it peaceful, even bucolic, but not boring.』

『Directed by V.I. PUDOVKIN. Here is Pudovkins epic motion picture about one mans political and social enlightenment during a time of violence and turmoil in his land. The year is 1920, the setting Soviet Central Asia (where Podovkin shot the film on location): a vast, undeveloped wilderness of mountains and plains. After an argument with a conniving American fur trader - whos a predictably outlandish caricature of a greedy, heartless capitalist a young, obscure Mongolian trapper is forced to flee his home. He joins Soviet partisans fighting for their liberation and is eventually captured and ordered shot by interventionist forces. However, a general uncovers an amulet from among the trappers possessions - the contents of which alters his fate, for it identifies him as a direct descendant of Ghenghis Khan. Because the name of Khan is still powerful among the Mongols, the trapper is set up as a puppet ruler of his country. How he ultimately responds to those who will manipulate him is conveyed by Pudovkin in a magnificently staged and photographed finale. This trapper is a typical Pudovkin hero: hes an individual, an idealized personality, who in his everyday struggle for survival symbolized the oppression of the masses. Storm Over Asia (which is also, appropriately, known as "The Heir To Chenghis Khan") is almost documentary-like in feel, with Pudovkin weaving a spellbinding drama in which characterization and narrative are expertly utilized to both unravel the story and bring home the revolutionary message. Pudovkin is also one of the cinemas key theorists with regard to the effective utilization of film editing. One can understand why, after observing how artfully he connects his various pieces of film - often in a dazzling, rapid-fire manner - to obtain a cohesive, stunningly visual finished product. Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (No Words Can Adequately Express the Unprecedented Joy of These 81 Hours) 『At no point in my lifetime have I felt so sentimental after viewing a television series. Yes, "Dae Jang Geum" (aka "A Jewel In the Palace") (2003) was magnificent, but "Jumong" (2006) is so overwhelmingly awesome on every possible level that it actually exceeds "Dae Jang Geum" in a number of ways. At this very moment I feel as if I've just completed a long journey with my closest friends, but now must say goodbye and move on. I kid you not, I feel hopelessly melancholy, because "Jumong" is an exceptional television series that has burrowed its way into my heart. This is special.
The scriptwriting is no less than phenomenal. There are multiple interests at play (royal family members, merchants, sorceresses, other kingdoms, tribes, etc.), and it's interesting to see them strategize and plot against one another. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this series are the strategy meetings that saturate each and every episode. Each character has his/her close confidants and meets with them regularly to discuss specific tactics to gain an advantage against their rivals, which makes for a seemingly non-stop display of cloak-and-dagger scheming. I personally find these exchanges exhilarating because they rely on intelligence and unorthodox (outside the box) thinking. There's a high emphasis on political coersion, unorthodox alliances, and subtle shifts in power from key events. The dialogue is great, crafting a number of exciting, clever exchanges between the players. Fantastic stuff! The obstacles are also very practical and interesting: discovering a sufficient salt supply, creating steel weaponry, obtaining national independence from hostile, more powerful kingdoms, etc. In addition, these conflicts help to accentuate an emotional resonance due to the large number of episodes dedicated to properly develop each obstacle and their climactic conclusions.
It's difficult for movies and television series to establish even a few memorable characters. "Jumong" has no less than 20. No, that is no overstatement, because 81 episodes (over a full hour each) allows for characters to be given heaping amounts of development that makes them multi-dimensional (even fallen comrades from the earlier episodes are never forgotten). Near the beginning it's somewhat easy to distinguish the "good guys" from the "bad guys", but as the series progresses it adds dimensions that ultimately result in haphazard classifications between "protagonists" and "antagonists." Some of the "good guys" will do "bad things" while some of the "bad guys" will do "good things." This will throw the viewer off guard, because at first the added dimensions may seem unwarranted, but over time these characters will express their actions within the light of logical decision-making. The use of multiple kingdoms adds greatly to this, because a kingdom may benefit from a specific alliance at one point in history, but may suffer greatly from maintaining that same alliance in the future.
Make no mistake, there are some clear protagonists, and within this grand journey there are a number impediments and setbacks that bring these characters closer to their confidants, as well as the viewer. The most impressive player, however, is the main protagonist (Jumong), who is sculpted into a truly charismatic, convincing leader who understands when to fight and when to express humility and passiveness. I have personally never seen a military leader as charismatic nor as convincing as "Jumong." He's quite literally the blueprint for leadership. The few other reviews (see IMDb as well) already flesh out the other characters, so I will avoid that here, but I assure you that they are all great.
So, are there *any* flaws in this series. Surely, any cinematic endeavor that lasts 81+ hours is going to have a few. For example, the budget restrictions are evident in that the number of extras are a bit thin (especially during battles), but that's a minor flaw because most of the battles involve "detached advancements" that involve fewer extras. The scoring is also limited, but the choice tunes are excellent and will only seem "repetitive" when the viewer watches 3 or 4 episodes in a row, which may be inevitable given just how addictive this series is. Regardless of a few other negligible cons, this is a highly addictive period drama/action series that currently holds my official award for "Best Television Series Ever Made."
I said goodbye to my friends for now, but my DVD set awaits for a reunion in the future. I promise you that I will pay them multiple visits to experience the joy of the journey again.』
(Excellent) 『This an excellent series set loosely in ancient Korea. The title character is Jumong, a prince of the realm. Jumong is the illegitimate son of the hero Haemuso, and when his mother is taken as a concubine of the king, Jumong's identity is kept secret. The villains in this piece are the king's first wife, and Jumong's 'brothers' Daeso and Youngpo, both resent Jumong, and his mother for stealing affection away from them at an early age.
What I like about this series is the very deep characterization. Even though Daeso's actions are bad, I sympathize with him, for it is true the King is less than considerate to his mother. I also enjoyed the love triangle between Daeso/Jumong/The merchant's daughter. The hermaphrodite character Sayong is entertaining and intriguing.
I'd highly recommend this series for fans of historical dramas and those looking for something different. I am about to start season 2 and I hope it will be just as good.』
(Great series) 『Every winter, my husband and I choose a new Korean drama series to watch. This year, it was Jumong. The first few episodes were a little slow but, the series turned out to be highly enjoyable. We were so sad when it ended! We are really looking forward to the "sequel", "The Kingdom of the Winds" that just ended this year in Korea...it is definitely a MUST BUY! Hope you enjoy!』
(A Korean Masterpiece!) 『A "stunning...must see" Korean historical drama, appealing to both men and women. Captivating...leaves you on the edge of your seat with every episode...fabulous scenary...love...hate...war...family strife...betrayal...(just like in real life)...don't miss out..."JUMONG" is an extraordinary work of video-artistry. I bought Vol. 1 and my wife and I were so enthraled...we raced to buy the entire series which is beyond belief in content and meaningfulness. WOW ! 10 STARS! After watching Jumong and the varied characters, this masterpiece will be firmly impanted in your heart forever. Kudos to the actors, script writers, producers and staff! Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Disappointed) 『I have watched many documentaries on Buddhism, and I have enjoyed most of them except this one. The cinematography was terrible as if the person holding the camera was clueless. At least if it was shot beautifully then I could at least have a relaxing time watching it.
There seemed to be no point to this documentary, and there was nothing to be learned. The short interviews with the nuns were superficial in content, and this is the only Buddhist documentary I have seen that made Buddhism seem stupid. I am a Buddhist so I have a lot of love for the religion, but I think if I was forced to watch this video a second time I may quit being a Buddhist.』
(Just sitting) 『This is one of the better films about Zen and for a very simple reason. It doesn't preach and therefore doesn't get bogged down in philosophy and metaphysics. It teaches only by pointing the camera at its subject, the 90-day winter retreat of the nuns of Korea's Baek Hung temple. If you ever wanted to know what a mediation retreat is like, this film will give you a nice taste.
What you see is that the nuns spend a lot of time inside sitting quietly. This is followed by periods of walking in circles in the courtyard. Once in a while they go out for a hike in the surrounding mountains, or collect wood from the forest. They cook meals. On New Year's they do a lot of cleaning and praying and visiting of nearby temples. And that's about it.
Of course if you know nothing or very little about Buddhism or Zen then you might be a bit confused about just what's going on. The Korean film makers, who produced this for Korean television, could assume their audience had the background to understand what they were being shown. And so they simply pointed the camera. There are one or two brief interviews with the head nuns, and a couple of scenes of the nuns chatting together, but for most of the film's 65 minutes all you hear are bells and wind and rain.
The film ends with the nuns leaving the temple:
Where did I come from? Where am I going to?
Came with the cloud, Going with the wind.
Then, what is this that is coming and going?

(Misleading) 『This is a misleading DVD because the title leads one to think one will gain insight into zen buddhism. Obviously the title was a marketing ploy. I guess they knew that if they gave a title that was "real" people wouldn't buy this. A "real" title would be: "silent, unenlightening montage of video of korean buddhist nuns". There is no narration or explanation of zen buddhism, simply video montage of korean buddhist nuns undergoing a 90 day meditation. Very cheap documentary and highly misleading. unless you want to watch two hours of korean nuns meditating, avoid this like the plague.』
(Not pretending to be an art movie) 『...and it is not. Clean shots of what is going on in a Zen monastery. It tends to be repetitive which I guess is alright as a parallel to the monastic life of these nuns. It feels like a home made movie shot without much detail. Indoor shots are at very bright artificial light. Feels like the people shooting it were in a hurry to get it done and get out of there. But then, this is just my opinion... 』

You will probably find the $19.95 cost to be worth this beautifully filmed travelogue. The trip starts in My Tho, a Vietnamese city just inland from the mouth of the Mekong Delta, but I didn't get my bearings because I never saw the city. From there the trip moves rapidly towards Vietnam and into Cambodia, rarely pausing, until you approach the border with Cambodia. During this leg of the trip at times I felt cast adrift, not knowing where along the river I was. Once into the Cambodia the Mekong seems to become murky and a pall seems to hang in the air. I felt as if this was a trick being played by the filmmaker in order to make a point of the differences one will experience when crossing the border. At times I wished to be able to just watch the scenery and not be intruded on by constant narration. (One narrator was an attractive Swiss woman named Simone Kauffman, who, interestingly, seemed to speak English with an Asian accent.) I was left wanting more time on the water and less time in the temples of Angkor, where the film lingers overlong. However, the film is about a trip to Angkor; I just wanted to spend more time on the journey.』
(Nice beginning... overall.. a disaster) 『The DVD skips... for starters. An initial nice, narrative journey turns into a showcase for two effete snobs who 'lord over' what should be a pleasant excursion. Also, the DVD does not begin in Saigon, but distal from there. I have been to Saigon...and the Mekong. This is a major disappointment. Seek something better. 』
(Piont Of View) 『I believe this give more detail about History Mekong and angkor OF Cambodia,People in the world must see this. This is treasure hid in the world. It's all on DVD (Churning the Sea Of Time: A Jourey up the Mekong to Angkor.)』
(Well done) 『This DVD has some good footage (and commentary) of the Mekong Delta up into Cambodia, as well as the Angkor ruins.』
(Churning the Sea of Time: A Journey Up the Mekong of Angkor) 『This is a beautiful film. Unfortunately it is marred somewhat by the narrator's glaring misprounuciation of key place names like "Angkor" which he persists in calling "angor" despite the fact that some of the experts featured pronounce it correctly. He also calls the temple Banteay Srei something like "Banteay Serei, which has a completely different meaning in Khmer. In addition, he makes a glaring error in his pronounciation of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta town My Tho, as most foreigners do. It would have been quite simple to check and correct these errors prior to release of the film and one has to wonder why such an apparently professional producer did not bother to do this. I still recommend the film highly, in part because there are no real alternative choices for those interested in Cambodia and the Mekong Delta.』 『One of the most mythic and potent journeys of our time, up the Mekong River through the exquisite, complicated terrain of Vietnam and Cambodia to the great ruins at Angkor - the magnificent Khmer temples built from the 9th-13th centuries AD that are being painstakingly restored deep in the Cambodian jungle.
Director Les Guthman travels by boat up a river whose raw beauty and power were celebrated by Marguerite Duras in the 1920s.
But in our time it became known as "the river of evil memory" as it coursed through Southeast Asia in the second half of the 20th century.
Today, the river in Vietnam is filled with the vibrant life of a young nation free of a century of war. In Cambodia the past weighs far heavier. We travel up the Mekong passed Phnom Penh, once called "the beguiling beauty of SE Asia," toward the Laotian border in search of the almost-extinct fresh water dolphins of the Mekong; then return back to the capital and head northwest up one of the world's unique natural wonders, the Tonle Sap River, and across the great Tonle Sap Lake, one of the planet's most abundant fisheries.
In Angkor, World Monuments Fund experts describe their 15-year restoration of one of the jewels of a city called "the eighth wonder of the world," the 12th century palace complex of Preah Khan. And as they take us on an insider's tour of Preah Khan, along with the other major sites of Angkor Wat, Bayon and Banteay Srei, we learn that the story of their work in Angkor is not only a story of the rebirth of Angkor after the horrors of the Khmer Rouge Era, but it is also a story of the rebirth of Cambodia.
A stunningly filmed high definition odyssey up a river far distanced in time from the corridor into the heart of darkness portrayed in Francis Coppola's "Apocalypse Now."

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Hot&Spicy is not just a title) 『This soup bowl is good, but it is very spicy and hot. Like the first review said it is high in sodium so it's nothing you want to eat daily but once in awhile is good. I have added dried veg like corn to the bowl with the added seasonings. I have also added cooked chicken and shrimp to the bowl. It combines to make a very good soup/meal. They're great for lunch, especially if your lunch break is less than an hour like mine.』
(THE CUP OF NOODLES ALTERNATIVE) 『Nong Shim Bowl Noodle - Hot and Spicy Flavor
Nong Shim Bowl Noodle is the Cup of Noodles alternative for people who like to eat seasoned and spicy foods. Although both Nong Shim Bowl Noodle are high in sodium and probably around the same level with regard to nutritional value, this bowl of soup although not intended to act as a complete meal, can certainly be a good portion of a meal, adding on additional side dishes like a bowl of rice, a fried egg, or eaten with a Korean favorite "kimchee." A tasty bowl of soup that is quick to prepare (add hot water and wait a few minutes) and ready to enjoy.』
(Really yummy!) 『If you like spicy noodles, give this one a try! Just add boiling water and you have a large, filling bowl of noodles. Very convienent if you're on the go. However, I must take off one star because this IS NOT the healthiest choice. It's loaded with startchy carbs, lots of sodium and is not exactly a natural food. Not the best choice if you are on a diet or have food restrictions BUT it tastes really good and certainly healthier than some fast foods. I myself only eat them once in a while. The other flavors in this brand I didn't care for but this one is a winner for sure!』 『From the leading manufacturer Korean Instant Noodle.

The center plot is a return to Vietnam by a young Vietnamese American which his family fled years ago to live in the United States. However, it is far beyond cross-cultural travelogue; it inhabits the American as well as the Asian psyche with such scary acuity, and takes us into an inner landscape where few can go....without this author as guide. The prose is elegant and luminous; the situations tragic, comic, ludicrous; terrifying. The tone I felt was one of battle fatigue but transcended by unrelenting steel: this one was meant to survive and to tell it all.....』
(Catfish and Mandala) 『This book is about a Vietnamese-American man looking for his identity in his homeland. Like many Vietnamese who were children when South Viet Nam fell to the communist in 1975, Mr. Pham's family fled to America where he grew up straddling two cultures. While his writing about biking though Viet-Nam is witty, observational, and realistic, I somehow felt sadden for him because of his Viet-kieu's experience, a terminology used for expats. Over all his story made many generalizations about a very complex and exciting country. I am too a Viet-kieu. What I found is a country full of eager young optimistic people wanting a better life for themselves, their families, sometimes - for better or worse - at any price. Yes, there are poverty and corruption, but there also exist the dignity and quiet grace of a peasant woman who gets up at crack of dawn, earning a meager wage for the day to feed her family because it's her duty. Mr. Pham chose to go back to America with his ''privileges'' and his ''opportunity'' still at a lost for his identity. Readers should not accept Mr. Pham's experience as those of the other Viet-kieu's in Viet Nam.

(. . arriving at the place where you started. . .and knowing it for the first time) 『 `I am a mover of betweens' writes Andrew X.Pham. . . `I slip among classifications, like water in cupped palms.' And in his award winning Catfish and Mandala he takes his readers into those `betweens' with him Viet-kieu, `foreign' Vietnamese, Pham sets out from San Francisco on his rickety 18 speed bicycle riding the Pacific Rim, first up the coast to Seattle, then through Japan, and finally arriving in Ho Chi Minh City from where he begins his odyssey through Vietnam, seeking to understand his relationship to the country of his birth, and the people, and his culture.
The ride he takes us on becomes, for the reader, as spiritual as it is physical. We feel every bump in the road, we push up the hills, we are cold, wet, hungry, ambivalent at times, and we suffer from chronic dysentery. Pham meets people who reject him, who taunt him, and those who, often after initial distrust, befriend him for part of the journey. While he is `pedaling and pushing' alone to Hanoi and back , on a journey everyone advises him is too dangerous, the narrative ebbs and flows through his childhood, through the escape on the boat, through the struggles of his family.
Pham moves comfortably from the specific, the particular, like his recollections of Scarface, Bugsy, Redeye, or Bagman and Mechanic, or the roasting ears of corn dripping with pork fat and scallions, to the philosophic - and then the poetic. It is little surprise he has been linked to writers like Thoreau, Kerouac, Steinback.. . I might add William Carlos Williams,T.S.Eliot or Carl Sandburg. He speaks at once of Vietnam and of his uncertain place there and of the US- and in so doing speaks to all of us who now count among the millions who have left homelands and no longer fully understand what home is, and who `move between.'
By the end of Pham's journey we begin to understand what that is, and value it. 』 『Winner of the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize ANew York TimesNotable Book of the Year Winner of the Whiting Writers' Award ASeattle Post-IntelligencerBest Book of the Year
Catfish and Mandalais the story of an American odysseyâa solo bicycle voyage around the Pacific Rim to Vietnamâmade by a young Vietnamese-American man in pursuit of both his adopted homeland and his forsaken fatherland.
Andrew X. Pham was born in Vietnam and raised in California. His father had been a POW of the Vietcong; his family came to America as "boat people." Following the suicide of his sister, Pham quit his job, sold all of his possessions, and embarked on a year-long bicycle journey that took him through the Mexican desert, around a thousand-mile loop from Narita to Kyoto in Japan; and, after five months and 2,357 miles, to Saigon, where he finds "nothing familiar in the bombed-out darkness." In Vietnam, he's taken for Japanese or Korean by his countrymen, except, of course, by his relatives, who doubt that as a Vietnamese he has the stamina to complete his journey ("Only Westerners can do it"); and in the United States he's considered anything but American. A vibrant, picaresque memoir written with narrative flair and an eye-opening sense of adventure,Catfish and Mandalais an unforgettable search for cultural identity. 』 『A great memoirist can burnish even an ordinary childhood into something bright--see, for instance, Annie Dillard'sAn American Childhood. So what about a really good writer with access to a dramatic and little-documented story? This is the case withCatfish and Mandala, Vietnamese American Andrew X. Pham's captivating first book, which delves fearlessly into questions of home, family, and identity. The son of Vietnamese parents who suffered terribly during the Vietnam War and brought their family to America when he was 10, Pham, on the cusp of his 30s, defied his parents' conservative hopes for him and his engineering career by becoming a poorly paid freelance writer. After the suicide of his sister, he set off on an even riskier path to travel some of the world on his bicycle. In the grueling, enlightening year that followed, he pedaled through Mexico, the American West Coast, Japan, and finally his far-off first land, Vietnam.
The story, with some of a mandala's repeated symbolic motifs, works on several levels at once. It is an exploration into the meaning of home, a descriptive travelogue, and an intimate look at the Vietnamese immigrant experience. There are beautifully illuminated flashbacks to the experience of fleeing Vietnam and to an earlier, more innocent childhood. While Pham's stern father, a survivor of Vietcong death camps, regrets that Pham has not been a respectful Vietnamese son, he also reveals that he wishes he himself had been more "American" for his kids, that he had "taken [them] camping."Catfish and Mandalais a book of double-edged truths, and it would make a fascinating study even in less able hands. In those of the adventurous, unsentimental Pham, it is an irresistible story.--Maria Dolan』

(We Band of Angels) 『This book shows us the true unsung heroes of the Pacific War. Nurses treating wounded soldiers on the jungle floor in Bataan; pulled back to the caves of Corregador; deserted by MacArthur and left to survive in a Japanese prison camp until the Philippines were liberated. That's the stuff great novels are made of. I enjoyed this book so much and I have recommended it to various friends. I have "lent" my copy out on numerous occasions and it has rarely been returned. As it is one of the books I intend to keep forever, I have purchased at least five copies over the years.』
(Very Good Read) 『Many Americans do not know what happened in the South Pacific during World War II. Many members of my family were lost in those campaigns. They were in the Death March, the camps and the Hell Ships. The many books on those incidents explain those stories but this book tells of the suffering experienced by the female members of our military. This is a good informative book and is easy to read. The women gave a lot during those years and were for the most part ignored by our government. I salute those ladies and although most have left us we are better off having had them in our military. Only a few knew of the sacrifices they suffered. They were part of the forgotten casualties of the war.』
(Stimulating Page Turner) 『Even though I am a "novice" when it comes to details of our Americans at war, I found this book equally if not more suspenseful then a "who dun it" novel. The author does an excellent job of putting you, the reader, right into the jungle with these women. She makes you feel a "part of it". What these women endured because of their belief in the American system and the fight for freedom for themselves and for their fellow Americans is almost unbelievable. I would consider it an honor to have known any one of them, and it is obvious the the author felt the same way. I highly recommend this book if you are an avid non-fiction reader. You will be hard pressed to put it down until the last page has been turned.』
(Now I understand...) 『I have a relative who was in the Bataan Death March and survived. I could never imagine "what it was like" on that infamous piece of ground, until I read this book. The descriptions of the physical realities, the range of personalities, the details of the tasks faced by the nurses, all this opened a window for me. While this story is not about the March itself, the location is the same, and the individual acts of courage are representative of the best of American valor and spirit. What a great read! And what a great reminder of how ordinary people can rise to real heroism.』 『"Found worms in my oatmeal this morning. I shouldn't have objected because they had been sterilized in the cooking and I was getting fresh meat with my breakfast.... I'm still losing weight and so are most of us..."
Ruth Marie Straub, an Army nurse, wrote those words in her diary on March 15, 1942, just over three months after the Japanese first bombed the U.S. military base in Manila. She and her colleagues had evacuated the city and established, in the Philippine jungle, hospitals for the skyrocketing numbers of casualties. In the face of the advancing Japanese Army, the nurses and other military personnel continued to retreat, first to the Bataan Peninsula, and then to Corregidor, a rocky island in Manila Bay. Straub was one of the lucky ones; she was evacuated with a handful of other nurses in April 1942. Her remaining colleagues, meanwhile, surrendered with the rest of the U.S. forces in May and were taken to STIC--Santo Tomas Internment Camp, where they were to spend nearly three years in captivity.
We Band of Angelstells the stories of these courageous women, tagged by the American media as "The Angels of Bataan and Corregidor." Utilizing a wide range of sources, including diaries, letters, and personal interviews with surviving "Angels," Elizabeth M. Norman has compiled a harrowing narrative about the experiences of these women--from the country-club atmosphere of prewar Manila; to the jungle hospitals where patients slept on bamboo cots in the open air; to the Malinta Tunnel on Corregidor, where they choked on dust and worked while the bombs rained down above them; to the STIC, where per-person rations were cut to 900 calories a day and the women resorted to frying weeds in cold cream for food. The story Nelson tells is compelling but slightly flawed: like many biographers, Nelson has a deep affection and respect for her subjects, which causes her to soften rough edges. At the same time, however, Nelson argues that these women were not heroes--nor were they angels (in the acknowledgments, Nelson notes that she didn't want the wordangelsin the title, but the publishers had their way). Perhaps because Nelson is a nurse herself, she is trying to stress that her profession is noble and that these women were, in a sense, just fulfilling their duties.
Nursingisnoble, of course, but it is clear that these women were something special. Amazingly, all of the Angels of Bataan, some 99 in number, survived their ordeal--and clearly helped hundreds of the other sufferers survive. We Band of Angelsdeserves a space on the bookshelves of anyone interested in World War II.--C.B. 『
Hailed byThe New York Times Book Reviewas a "grippingly told" story of "power and relevance," here is the true, untold account of the first American women to prove their mettle under combat conditions. Later, during three years of brutal captivity at the hands of the Japanese, they also demonstrated their ability to survive. Filled with the thoughts and impressions of the women who lived it, "every page of this history is fascinating" (The Washington Post).
We Band of Angels
In the fall of 1941, the Philippines was a gardenia-scented paradise for the American Army and Navy nurses stationed there. War was a distant rumor, life a routine of easy shifts and evenings of dinner and dancing under the stars. On December 8 all that changed, as Japanese bombs rained on American bases in Luzon, and the women's paradise became a fiery hell. Caught in the raging battle, the nurses set up field hospitals in the jungles of Bataan and the tunnels of Corregidor, where they saw the most devastating injuries of war, and suffered the terrors of shells and shrapnel.
But the worst was yet to come. As Bataan and Corregidor fell, a few nurses escaped, but most were herded into internment camps enduring three years of fear and starvation. Once liberated, they returned to an America that at first celebrated them, but later refused to honor their leaders with the medals they clearly deserved. Here, in letters, diaries, and firsthand accounts, is the story of what really happened during those dark days, woven together in a compelling saga of women in war.

(The one the only: Lonely Planet!) 『The Lonely Planet Guides are consistently the best travel guides for backpackers and other budget travelers. Their Southeast Asia guide is superior to all the other ones I have seen because it includes Myanmar (Burma)--along with a discussion of whether travelers should travel there or not due to the human rights boycott. Some of the details that you might have in 10 separate country-specific guidebooks are certainly missing, however, it's a lightweight compact quickie guide to a whole region of the world. Good for us.』
(Inaccurate and Outdated) 『Yes, Lonely Planet usually delivers with lots of tips and great recommendations. However, this particular guide is almost worthless. Not only did we encounter numerous inaccuracies in terms of transportation availability, restaurant and hotel existence, and false information about visas and entry fees, but also poor recommendations. There is traveling on a budget, then there is traveling like a homeless person.
