(Super Size Presto Griddle)

I ordered this griddle for my daughter"s birthday present. She was very pleased with it because it works well and has a large cooking surface. Item was shipped timely and was everything that the description said.』

(This just doesn't work)
『I was hoping to have a nice big griddle that I could use all the time but this just isn't it. I've gone back to my two smaller griddles because this unit just doesn't heat evenly. Yeah, you can cook lots of pancakes, but you have to keep track of them and keep checking on them because the ones on the edges are going to get done faster than those in the middle. And cooking bacon is a joke. Some were burned after a few minutes while others will actually still cold to the touch.

I've included a couple images in the customer photos of how the heating element runs underneath. I can't take a photo to show the thickness, or rather how thin the cooking surface is but it feels about 1/2 as thick as my $20 smaller griddles. Basically, it's very thin. All I have to say is 'buyer beware' and 'you get what you pay for'.

Cheers.』

(Griddle)
『I haven't used the product yet. I bought it for camping this summer. I had it shipped to my sisters and it arrived in a timely manner.』

(I am very unhappy!)

This is a horrible griddle!
I make pancakes every Sunday morning and thought this griddle would help cut out some of the cooking time due to its size. After cooking with it several times I am very unhappy with its performance and recommend you stay away from this griddle. If I could return it I would but I trashed the box before I discovered the problems. It does not heat evenly and has a cold spot in the middle. I though maybe I did not let it heat long enough the first time. So I let it heat through several cycles but it only scorched the first batch on one side and the second batch did not cook evenly and the middle was to cold to cook on. You cannot cook meats like bacon or sausage on it because of its uneven cooking. The ends of the bacon are done before the center of the bacon is done.

I am now the owner of an oversized, hard to store, uneven cooking piece of garbage.

Jeremy Wallace
Mobile, Alabama

(Terrible... the worst)
『I've never seen a griddle that had a bigger coldspot in the middle.. it may heat up evenly, but the middle will go stone cold if you put anything even slightly cold on it.

chicken or beef will cause the temp to drop from 400 to 250 in matters of a second.

I wouldn't wish this griddle on anybody』

『This super-sized griddle is great for any meal. It can cook up to 50% more food than other jumbo griddles. Premium nonstick surface for stick-free cooking and easy cleaning. Slide-out drip tray empties easily. Fully submersible with the heat control removed. Control Master heat control maintains proper cooking temperature automatically. Huge cooking surface! Cooks as many as 12 slices of french toast at one time』

(Bamboo Eloquence)
『Many recordings of Japanese shaukaushi bamboo flute are available; thus I was surprised to find Masayuki Koga's album Eastwind still being produced. But then, there is a very good reason: it is a great album of both traditional and his own contemporary pieces. One must be highly talented and inventive to do both well; Koga is a master. The sound quality of the album, a remastered anthology of his LPs, is excellent, owing to the original studio engineering and the sense of chamber depth. The use of rice paper in package design is a nice touch. The classic pieces--Distant Cry of Deer, Sashi no Kyolu, Rokudan, and Zangetsu--are unforgiving; any flaw in breathing technique, sensitivity, and rhythmic flow is readily apparent. Koga, who was trained in both the Kinko and Tozan schools of shakuhashi, performs these works in grand style. His own works maintain the traditional sound but with modern flair in phrasing. One track is a duet with koto. Such slow music produces timelessness, tranquility, and awareness. Koga is a musical sorcerer.』

(Like no other Shakuhachi)
『Masayuki Koga's powerful shakuhachi sounds will bring you face to face with your unadorned true self. They are nature made manifest in all it's complete force and abundance. At times sweet and serene, at other times like a gale blowing right through you. Koga stands out above all the masters, incorporating and transcending the traditional. This is the first and last in Shakuhachi music--the real thing.』
Shakuhachimaster,Masayuki Koga, is a fascinating Renaissance man: a master musician, composer, producer and engineer, trained in law, with a penchant for philosophy. His music reflects those many aspects of his personality and his skills.

Born in Japan at the height of World War II, Koga followed his father's footsteps in learning to play theshakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute that is associated with Zen Buddhism. Although secular music has been performed on theshakuhachifor a hundred years now, it still retains its distinctly Zen aesthetic. It is capable of very subtle tonal variations and expressive nuances, all of which Koga explores with his full spirit, emotion and intellect.

Koga's unique contribution has been to expandshakuhachimusic, playing not only the traditional music of Japan, but blending it with Western influences. His musical training was traditional, receiving his master-teacher degree from the Tozan school. Subsequently, Koga became the youngest member of the award-winning Ensemble Nipponia.

In his mid-twenties, Koga withdrew from the orchestra to broaden his musical horizons, experimenting with jazz and free form styles. Koga moved to the United States in 1972, continuing to perform widely. To further spread the understanding of his tradition in the West, Koga founded the Japanese Music Institute of America.

Eastwind: Japanese Shakuhachi Musicis undoubtedly an impressive production. The packaging includes a stunning rice paper booklet. The selections are carefully chosen titles from three of Koga's previous releases,Beyond Time and Space,The Distant Cry of DeerandMoon at Dawn, a perfect compilation for the audiophile interested inshakuhachimusic.

Masayuki Koga is a profoundly talented artist, devoted to his instrument. "The quality of your life is reflected in the quality of your sound. I can sometimes fool myself, but I can never fool the sound. I am theshakuhachiand theshakuhachiis me."』

(Extremely Appealing Musical Mosaic)
『The title alone and that it is a "Rough Guide" convinced me the album would not disappoint. Call it instinct or gut intuition, I was right! The selections were made by Dan Rosenberg whose background in world music is exceptional and his travels around the world on a quest to capture the best tradtional/folk music is the envy of anyone who loves this musical genre. The whole CD is a musical feast for the ears ... The music spans a wide range of different Israeli styles.

The most appealing to this listener is called, mizrachi, which is from Yemen and Iraq. Ofra Haza has a fantastic CD, "Yemenite Songs" from which "Ode Le-Eli" was chosen, her soulful haunting voice will echo in your mind, long after the CD stops. What a shame she died at the peak of her career. The influences of Yemen, Northern Africa, and Palestinian Arabic sounds are very distinctive and highly appealing. Some selections use Eastern classical Arabic modal techniques, others include Sephardic influences along with Andalusian improvisatinal singing called mawwal. The sounds of Morrocco are clearly identifiable as played by Shomo Bar and David D'Or. Another fantastic interpreter of Israeli music is Busran Abraham who includes modern jazz improvisation, Turkish musical phrases, and classical flamenco along with Persian ghazals. The Israeli Andalusian Orchestra combines mainly Morroccan, Tunisian, and Algerian influences along with Andalusian to reach new heights of the best multicultural mix on a CD. The ballad sung by Arik Einstein makes me want to find an album by this singer alone ... He has a wonderful masculine voice which has undertones of a richness and depth that are hard to describe. Yasmin Levy a female soloist rounds out the CD with her Turkish, Greek, and gypsy stylings ... Last but not least, Chava Alberstein completes the CD with her Joan Baez-like folk singing style that is always filled with a meaningful message.

It is hard to put into words just how unique and all encompassing this music is. I am filled with awe and admiration by Emil Zrihan who sings both in Hebrew and several Arabic dialects - making one fully realize Father Abraham had many sons ... Zehava Ben's "Melech Amiti" is a clear representation of the wide musical rhythms which combine from Turkey, Greece, and Northern Africa. Hadag Nahash have a modern popular tune which brings forth current social issues and sheds a new perspective and light on the subject (per liner notes) but with a highly energetic musical beat and magnetizing rhythm. The whole CD is one fantastic unforgettable celebration of life and survival ... representative of the present, past, and future. Another most highly recommended CD is "Hidden Gate: Jewish Music from Around the World" also compiled by Dan Rosenberg. Erika Borsos (pepper flower)』

『As with other single-country collections, there isn't simply one type of music that appears onThe Rough Guide to the Music Of Israel. This is a young country with an ancient culture; consequently, the Jewish Diaspora has come home to roost with a myriad of influences it has picked up over time. The 14 tracks here range from Yemenite diva Ofra Haza to the glossy global pop of Idan Raichel's Project to first lady of song Chava Alberstein to the aptly named Israeli Andalusian Orchestra. Yasmin Levy is a distinct highlight--her powerful voice and striking beauty make for a glamorous fusion of gypsy, Sephardic, and Ladino music. And while much of this music is rooted in tradition or is acoustic, the jazzy grooves and rapping of Hadag Nahash have a modern-day pop sensibility that gets kids moving on the dance floor. This will be a real eye-opener for those expecting only cantors and Klezmer tunes.--Tad Hendrickson

(didn't like it)
『Those of you genuinely interest in classical Arabic music may be disappointed. After listening to Munir Bashir this sounds superficial. Instead of following classical maqamat, Shamma introduces conceptual thinking. If you're interested in something lighter, thematic, you might like it. For those who don't, go for Bashir, listen to Ahman Ebadi (Persian setar).』

(One of the great virtuosos of our time)
『And here I thought this CD was my personal discovery! What a surprise to find 20 reviews...but, OK...I'm glad.
I can't understand any comparison to Munir Bashir - Shamma's virtuosity is of a whole different order. Each note seems to have its own attack and dynamic. And his collection of "extended techniques" places him solidly in the late '20th century. Bashir is much more humble and unassuming. Sometimes I feel that Shamma approaches the overelaborated. But even if it's a bit calculated, the calculations are on a genius level. And the orphanage piece touches the heart AND the mind, on so many levels.』

(EXCELLENT ALBUM--exquisite musical heritage of Iraq)
『What wonderful music comes from Baghdad and Iraq in general. It truly was the seat of artistic and musical sophistication. Just listen to these esquisite sounds to see what I mean.』

(Not Munir Bashir, but close)
『Naseer has come a long way.... his talent seems to get better with time...』

(The Epitome of Iraqi Sadness is Nassir's Music...)
『I had met Nassir a long time ago during the first Iraq War and listened to him play. He cries with his oud; or it cries for him. This collection is an embodiment of what we as a people have suffered under wars, sanctions and more wars...
Nassir traces his steps into the depth of Iraqi culture. He brings up characters in Iraqi history and makes them talk to each other, and if you knew the names, you heard the talk, and you understood.
In the piece on Ameria -called Ameria, a shelter which was hit by a US missile causing the tragic death by 'boiling' to some 400 Iraqi women and children, you can hear the children play. It's peaceful and quiet and then the air-raid sirens kick in, and it is painful...I cry when this piece approaches that part...You can then hear the swirling missile, the rush and panic of humans that seems endless, and then the lamentation...That is slow and agonizing. Peace dawns again, and you hear the Muezzin (the call for prayer), and it seems to drag you into calm, and finally, the joyful march of the martyrs to heaven...You can hear them as they ascend.
The music is rare and beautiful...What more can I say...』

(Good introduction)
『This was what I needed. I have a few advanced drum solo's. This one helped a lot with the beats and the basics moves to the drums. It is more of a break down so that you can work your way up to the harder ones. Drum solo's are just learning how to make your body mimic the beat of the drums and to master isolations and layering to different beats at the same time. out of the basic beginner drum sols' this one will give you the foundation you need. just like in basic belly dance you need a good foundation before you can do the harder moves. I tried jumping into learning the harder ones first. I prefer to work smarter not harder. Become confident in the foundation and then the harder moves will be less stressing. The key is to be able to develop your own technigue or style and to be able to apply the moves without watcing the dvd to a piece of music. This comes with a music dvd to practice to for the price you can't beat what you are getting. The Art of Drum solo is saying you are learning the foundation and there is a Art to it. Art normaly refers to creativity.』

(Why Is She The Princess of Drum Solos?)
『She has no rhythm. Watch her when she's doing simple 4/4 movements. She doesn't hit the beat. All her drum solos are canned and have probably been spoon fed to her, as she does the same thing every time. This is the routine she calls an "improvisation" at every show.

I give this DVD two stars because I learned one combination from her, and learned two moves by watching her take lessons from the real stars for thirty seconds. Incidentally, the music they chose for the Cairo sequence sounds Turkish to me...but I wouldn't commit myself either way. This DVD is worth renting or borrowing if you can get your hands on it, but until they start selling them used for four dollars, go buy something else.』

(Inspiring Beginner Drum Solo)
『This DVD is one of the longer ones for beginners (It says 71 minutes but I think its only 60 minutes worth of instruction.) And there is a bonus music CD too.

First, there is a stretching section. Next comes the teachig section, each bellydance step is paired with a lesson on different kinds of drum beats by the male drummer. (I haven't heard this information anywhere else. Important if you get deep enough into this dance style)

The second half of the video teaches a choreography. And it's broken down very well. Each step you learn is taught along with the next step so that you learn how to transition from one move to the next. There is a dance at the end with some of the steps you learn but the full choreography really isn't done at the end--exactly as it was in practice and most videos I have do. This was a major misstep in my opinion--and this is where it loses one star.』

(Absolute must have)
『I bought this dvd based off of the other good reviews and I must say out of all the other belly dance dvds that I have this is my #1. It really broke down the rhythms of the music and it was easy to follow. I was having a hard time with choo choo shimmy's but after watching this dvd I was FINALLY able to get it. This is a great dvd and it comes with a bonus cd of Issam's music. (I didn't know that). This is the best choice for learning moves that are in sync with the music. The performance is like poetry in motion!』

(Drum solo)
『This was a nice video, the explanations were excellent and Sonia and Issam worked very well together. the bonus CD was fun too.』

(A Glorious Dose of Culture!)
『After being impressed by some of Director Pudovkin's earlier films, I was curious to see "Storm over Asia" which is billed as 'Pudovkin's Masterpiece'- and I couldn't agree more! Unlike the other films I'd seen (End of St Petersburg, Chess Fever) this grand epic takes us to remote Mongolia for a real dose of authentic culture, complete with genuine Mongolians, their traditional homes, a lama and local Buddhist temple ceremonies. Excellent photography and attention to details already makes the cultural aspect a most interesting and exciting experience for the armchair traveller and dreamer of exotic places. Picture quality throughout is very good, and the music is outstanding, being an original score by Timothy Brock incorporating perfectly-suited Russian and Mongolian melodies and sounds. For the Buddhist temple ceremony even authentic instruments must have been used to replicate the music played on such occasions, making the cultural experience more than merely visual. The story itself blends fact with fiction, highlighting the plight of the Mongolian tribesmen who live a simple life, and are exploited by foreigners who want to profit from the fur trade. The focus is on one Mongolian who resists the exploitation, then by a twist of fate becomes the pawn for British troops in the region who want to use him to gain more control over the Mongolian natives. Politics and cultural identity make the plot, but a large part of the film's success is no doubt due to Pudovkin's skill in imagery and depicting emotions and drama with poignant images. An excellent film in itself, enhanced even more by its authentic filming location in Mongolia and genuine cultural experience.』

(Incredible)
『I can't really add much to the only other review, but I, too, find it unfortunate that this film and much of Pudovkin's work has been largely made invisible due to the glare of Eisenstein (or if you're into cultural studies during the New Economic Policy, Protazanov and the other 'commercial' directors at Mezhrabprom-Rus). While this film represents Pudovkin at his peak, awash as it is in ethnographic detail, a real human story (instead of Eisenstein's cardboard cutouts), and the completely sublime use of his trademark 'bricking' montage, his other films (especially less famous ones like 'Chess Fever' and 'Deserter') deserve a look, too.』

(Dazzling editing in powerful Soviet masterpiece)
『Storm Over Asia/The Heir to Genghis Khan is one of those titles frequently seen in film history books but rarely seen on a screen. Good to have it at last, then, because it's one of the best films to come out of the Soviet 1920s-- a work of rat-a-tat editing on a par with Gance's Napoleon and an example of slowly-smoldering drama finally delivering with a vengeful wallop worthy of The Godfather. Pudovkin consistently displayed the human touch that colleagues such as Eisenstein and Dovzhenko lacked, and the story of a Mongolian peasant who is used as a puppet ruler by the British until he finally unleashes the force of his people upon them is gripping throughout. In short, a masterpiece that is also a cracking good movie.』
『The last of the three great films that V.I. Pudovkin directed in the 1920s,Storm over Asia(1928) is an acknowledged classic of Soviet silent cinema. Filmed largely on location in Mongolia, the film has an authentic documentary feel, though the story is a stirring melodrama, about a young fur trapper who is mistreated by the occupying forces in the civil war and becomes a leader of the partisans. Pudovkin enjoys caricaturing the foreign (British) troops and the medieval rituals of a Buddhist temple, but it's out on the steppes that he really comes into his own, with panoramic shots of the vast landscapes. Together withMother(1926) andThe End of St. Petersburg(1927),Storm over Asia(also known asThe Heir to Genghis Khan) entitles Pudovkin to be ranked with Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov as a master of the Soviet montage style, which he expounded in his bookFilm Technique(1929).--Ed Buscombe
『Soviet master filmmaker V. I. Pudovkin's "Storm Over Asia" is a revolutionary masterpiece. Described by critics as an "epic poem," "Storm Over Asia" is set in the remote region of Mongolia where a young man is mistaken as a descendant of the great warrior Genghis Khan. When he is made a puppet ruler, he must decide where his loyalties lay.』

(A few short-comings, but provided what I expected)
『I am, at best, an amateur historian, so I didn't bring a deep knowledge of subject that some others do, and thus cannot speak to conflicting theories or anything like that. I was merely someone interested in learning about the central Eurasian region, particularly where it related to the more Classical period and earlier. This book goes well beyond that, of course, as it carries the story up to the modern day. While it wasn't my main intended focus, the latter chapters did help expand what I know about the development of the region in more recent times.

There were several really interesting discussions in the book. One of the most interesting, to my mind, was the idea that in developing a massive trade and exchange network the Scythians and related peoples of Central Eurasia may have helped facilitate the sudden blooming of Classical philosophical thinking.

Now, having said that, the book certainly does have its short-comings. Specifically, it suffers from a decided lack of visuals to help explain the movement of people and armies. There is a steady stream of people and place names, movements and conflicts, which I found very challenging to keep straight. The included maps on the insides of the book covers help a bit, but really only with place names.

The other issue I had was the rant the author goes on about Modernism in the latter part of the book. It starts off fine, as he keeps it clearly linked to the subject matter, but before long the readers finds himself in the middle of a discussion of the impact of Modernism on art and music. It doesn't last all that long, but it's enough to have you wondering if maybe some pages from an art history book got mixed in.

Overall, the book did what I expected of it - expanded my knowledge of this history of the Central Eurasian peoples.』

(Dreadful Book, I'm Returning It)
『This book lacks a soul. It is old fashioned history of the worst kind, dry factoids strung out one after the other. There is nothing about ethnography: who were some of these tribes? There is nothing about culture, aside from the poems that open most chapters. Nothing about practices: were they all male dominated? Was there no variation? I searched in vain to learn something about the culture, technological innovations, food, whatever that the steppe peoples brought to the lands they conquered or migrated into. Not there.

No one is fleshed out. NAmes parade thru the pages but you never learn any stories about them that make them come alive, only facts. I thought they stopped teaching history this way 20 years ago.

The cover art is the only illustration in the entire book. I suspect the author has never been to any of these places, but surely there are Getty images available for the sweep of the steppes, Samarkand, Urumchi, etc? In a book that deals with who conquered where, when, there is not a single map showing the sweep of empires as they moved across the steppes. Too challenging to do I reckon, but it makes the manuscript much poorer. This book reads more like an outline. Maybe someone who is a good writer will use it as a basis for a decent book on the topic. The Hittite stuff in the front you can get in many better written histories.』

(Updated synthesis)
『recounting the history of what the author terms 'Central Eurasian [henceforth CEA] Culture Complex,' which - geographically speaking - spread from Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula (i.e., Koguryo kingdoms) in the East to as far as the Pannon Plain/Carpathian Basin in the West, and in some respects even beyond those frontiers. One of the central themes connecting diverse peoples in this diachronic-synchronic/vertical-horizontal study is the presence of the oath-sworn guard corps (Latin 'comitatus') that gradually grew in number and formed the heart of CEA nations until the adoption of world religions in the Middle Ages (p. 15 passim). Maintaining the steady flow of luxury goods so as to reward their services played no small part as the raison d'etre for commerce along the Silk Road.

You can read about the war charioteer Hittites, Ashvins/Wu-sun-s, Mycaneans; the state foundation struggles regarding Scythians vs. Cimmerians, Hsiung-nu-s vs. Tokhars, Huns vs. Goths, Turks vs. Avars, Mongols vs. Jurchens; as well as about the Arab conquest in Central Asia, the Khazar kaganate, imperial Tibet, Uighurs, and sundry. By extending the analysis to maritime-based trade (littoral systems) and subsequent European (Portuguese, Dutch, British, Russian) expansion/colonization in Asia, the Orientalist scholar may have cast his net far too wide. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the last two chapters (pp. 263-319, concerning 19-20th centuries), which, as other reviewers have already noted, are way too sketchy, overly generalizing, at times propagandistic, and even off tangent. Don't ask me what importance T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" or Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" holds for CEA history. Rather, the author could have breathed a word or two, say, about the Manchu-Chinese/Tibetan conflict vis-á-vis the Gurkha-ruled Nepal, the Opium Wars, the Crimean War, the 'Great Game' b/w Russia and Britain for the control of Central (and Inner) Asia, etc.

Nitpicking or not, allow me to make a slight correction at this point w/ regard to the following assertion: "[After the demise of the Sakyapa overlordship, circa 1357, w]ith the partial exception of brief interregnum periods, Tibet continued to be largely unified under the rule of one or another Mongol state down to the defeat of the Junghars by the Manchu-Chinese (p. 258 fn. 80)." This is clearly untrue. There was almost zero Mongol influence in Central Tibet (ÜTsang), let alone their central authority, during the Pakmodrupa priest-kings (1358-, nominally, 1618) and the Rinpungpa governors/castellans (roughly, 1491-1566). Under the reign of the Tsangpa rulers (1567-1642) certain Tibetan factions, mainly but not exclusively the Gelukpas, sought contact w/various Mongol tribes in order to secure their military aid. The Mongols' role during the early stage of the Dalai lama's regime (1642-1720) was that of a hired sword to subdue internal and external opposition.

The main corpus is best read simultaneously with the endnotes, of which there are 111 (pp. 385-426), that offer some real insights and marshal relevant evidences. The same is true for the epilogue entitled 'The Barbarians' (pp. 320-62), which goes a long way to dispel a host of long-held misconceptions, and the two appendices ('The Proto-Indo-Europeans and their Diaspora,' pp. 363-74; 'Ancient Central Eurasian Ethnonyms,' pp. 375-84). As a methodological tool, turning the ruling paradigm of centre-periphery inside out facilitates bringing some well-deserved 'historical justice' to this marginalized region in crucial observations, such as:

+ "In every recorded case when the traditional Graeco-Roman, Persian, or Chinese empires of the periphery [!] became too powerful and conquered or brought chaos to the Central Eurasian nomadic states, the result for Central Asia, at least, was economic recession. The Han Dynasty destruction of the Hsiung-nu resulted in chaos...it was several centuries before the Türk, the next nomadic people who understood the Silk Road, could restore the system...When the Chinese and Arab alliance against Tibetans and the Western Turkic empire...succeeded...the result was chaos..., bringing with it severe recession, followed by rebellions and revolutions led by Sogdians and other merchant people [740-60s CE] that affected most of the continent. Finally, when the Manchu-Chinese and Russians partitioned Central Eurasia and the Ch'ing Dynasty destroyed the Junghar Empire [1755]...the economic devastation they wrought...was so total that even at the turn of the millennium in AD 2000 the area had not recovered (pp. 257-8)."
+ "There was a constant drain of people escaping from China into the realms of the Eastern Steppe, where they did not hesitate to proclaim the superiority of the nomadic life-style. Similarly, many Greeks and Romans joined the Huns...where they lived better and were treated better (p. 76)."
+ The primary goal of fortifications along the borders of peripheral empires from China through Persia to Rome ('limes' network or the Byzantine military governorships called 'theme') was offensive in nature, "to hold territory conquered from neighbouring states and to prevent loss of population to them (p. 330)."
+ "[T]he vast majority of the silk possessed by the Central Eurasians in the two millennia from the early Hsiung-nu times [4-3rd c. BCE] through the Mongols down to the Manchu conquest was obtained through trade and taxation, not war or extortion (p. 23)."
+ Raids of steppe people were, in many cases, triggered by the breaches of treaties, or were made at the request of some peripheral power against local enemies (divide et impera), e.g., the Manchus were called upon by the Chinese Ming dynasty to crush rebellion; the Mongols' aim was to uproot their Jurchen (Chin dynasty) adversaries (p. 335); Uighur Turks (757 CE) were invited to quell the An Lu-shan revolt -- their sacking of Loyang (762) "was authorized by the financially strapped T'ang court as a reward or payment (p. 338)."

For reasons unknown, the following essays by the same author of the present tome have not found their way to the bibliography (pp. 427-55): 'Tibet and the Early Medieval Florissance in Eurasia,' in: Central Asiatic Journal 21 (2), 1977: pp. 89-104; in collaboration w/ Michael Walter: 'Some Indo-European Elements in Early Tibetan Culture,' in: Tibetan Studies 7, Vol. 2: pp. 1037-54, Vienna 1997.

(black hole between 500 b.c. and 1500 a.d.)
『I don't know where to start in reviewing this book. Perhaps the beginning is a good place. This book starts off well. The prologue concerning the hero myths and the origin of the comitatus seems curious at first but makes sense as the book goes on. The first chapter on the Hittites and the origin of the chariot I found fascinating. The second chapter was not quite as good, but the musings on the origins of philosophical thought and its possible diffusion via the Silk Road between China, India, and Greece was good food for thought. Which brought us up to about 500 b.c., at which point ...

The book just seemed to fall off a cliff. For the next two thousand years, the time period the majority of us are probably most interested in, all we get is a seemingly endless succession of names and dates, which tribal leader raided which tribal group, tra la tra la, with no maps and little indication of what is important out of all of this and what is not. One small example should suffice. On page 168 we encounter the sentence: "There Alp Arslan resoundingly defeated an army of the Byzantine emperor Romanus at the Battle of Mantzikert in 1071." That's it. No further reference.

Hello!!! Wasn't that the battle that initiated the papal call for the first Crusade, one of those seminal events in world history whose repercussions are still affecting the societies of Central Asia and indeed the whole world even today, almost a thousand years later? (Afghanistan, anyone?) You would think this might be a ripe field for discussion, but in fact there is not one single mention that the Crusades even happened. The Battle of the Bulge is in this book. Pearl Harbor is in this book. But not one single mention of the Crusades. Umm, wasn't that minor Central Asian group the Turks involved?

And historical personages. What we learn about Attila the Hun is that he must have had his reasons. Oh, really? (Or as my daughter would say: "No duh!") Of course he had his reasons! Hitler had his reasons as well. The question is: what were those reasons? And were those reasons good reasons? You won't find out here.

Tamerlane. Now there's a person I'd like to learn more about. Didn't he rule during some sort of golden age in Central Asian history? I've often heard about him over the years, but never truly learned much in detail. And now I can honestly say that I still haven't. After one quick paragraph outlining all his major and minor victories and defeats, we are given this:"The legacy of Tamerlane and the Timurids was to be in patronage of the arts." That's it? Yep, that's it.

The book does get interesting again in chapter 9, when he gets into a discussion of the littoral system and how the newly opened up European sea trade to the Far East affected the Silk Road economies, but then ...

The book falls right off the cliff again, and is a jumble right through to the end. I won't go into his extended rant against Modernism because other reviewers have already done that. He has some valid points, but mostly he just sets up straw men and tears them down as easy targets, rarely focusing on the larger picture. His prescription seems to be that if only the central Asian countries could unite and form some kind of European Union-type organization, and reinstitute a Victorian Era-style noble aristocracy based on the comitatus system (see, we did get back to it in the end), then the world might suddenly find itself living in peace and harmony.

Yeah, right.

A good book deserves to be written about the empires of the Silk Road. Unfortunately, this is not it.

(The mystery of the Indo-Europeans)
『Despite what one reviewer notes as a distracting issue in the plaint over modernism, this book, especially the beginning and notes, is an exciting take on the ever-mysterious history, or lack of it, of the Indo-Europeans, an epic in itself, for scholars, after the Homers. The Indo-European linguistics question is notably arcane and this review of the weighty issues that confound simple understanding inspires hope that some resolution of the ethno-maniacal mythologies here might be possible. It is hard to determine the validity of the issues in this field, but it is useful to consider this perspective when confronted with the 'Aryan invasion theories'. The book is filled with a lot of useful information. Many of the proposals, such as the manner of creole formation as an explication of the mysteries of Indo-European linguistic diversity, are especially interesting, if open to non-critical acceptance by the non-specialist. All in all, a splendid read, and possibly the beginnings of sanity on this question.』

The first complete history of Central Eurasia from ancient times to the present day,Empires of the Silk Roadrepresents a fundamental rethinking of the origins, history, and significance of this major world region. Christopher Beckwith describes the rise and fall of the great Central Eurasian empires, including those of the Scythians, Attila the Hun, the Turks and Tibetans, and Genghis Khan and the Mongols. In addition, he explains why the heartland of Central Eurasia led the world economically, scientifically, and artistically for many centuries despite invasions by Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Chinese, and others. In retelling the story of the Old World from the perspective of Central Eurasia, Beckwith provides a new understanding of the internal and external dynamics of the Central Eurasian states and shows how their people repeatedly revolutionized Eurasian civilization.

Beckwith recounts the Indo-Europeans' migration out of Central Eurasia, their mixture with local peoples, and the resulting development of the Graeco-Roman, Persian, Indian, and Chinese civilizations; he details the basis for the thriving economy of premodern Central Eurasia, the economy's disintegration following the region's partition by the Chinese and Russians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the damaging of Central Eurasian culture by Modernism; and he discusses the significance for world history of the partial reemergence of Central Eurasian nations after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Empires of the Silk Roadplaces Central Eurasia within a world historical framework and demonstrates why the region is central to understanding the history of civilization.

(A 'must' for any library strong in Asian history and culture)
『INSIDE CENTRAL ASIA: A POLITICAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY OF UZBEKISTAN, TURKMENISTAN, KAZAKHSTAN, KYRGYZSTAN, TAJIKISTAN, TURKEY AND IRAN is a 'must' for any library strong in Asian history and culture, especially as these regions are typically given only cursory attention in favor of Japan, Korea and others. The former Soviet republics of Central Asia represent a politically pivotal region and are essential study for any who would understanding the pressures in the region. Political writer and historian Dilip Hiro's analysis of the politics and daily lives of the peoples of these countries is detailed and essential.

(A useful overview of recent Central Asian history)
『This provides a thorough and often insightful account of the recent history of today's five Central Asian states: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The main focus is on the post-Soviet history of the new nations, but Hiro begins with an introductory chapter on the history of the region from earliest times, with increasingly detailed coverage of the Tsarist and Soviet periods up to 1950.

Each of the five nations is then covered in its own chapter, starting with its development in the final years of the USSR, then with its leap to independence, and then the subsequent years of nation building. There are many common themes, including the struggles to reassert (or create) a unifying national identity, to create functioning economies after the post-Soviet economic collapse, the tensions of overlapping ethnic groups, the resurgence of interest in traditional Islam, and a strong tendency towards authoritarian one-party rule.

The last twenty years have not always been easy in this region, and Hiro is willing to be fairly hard-hitting in discussing some of the difficulties, including the outright megalomania of Niyazov's personal rule in Turkmenistan, the regional rivalries behind the Tajikistan civil war, and the allegations of high-level corruption in Kazakhstan. He explains the background and consequences of ethnic tensions and Islamic movements in the Fergana valley, including the tensions that led to the tragic Andijon incident.

As well as the chapters on the five Central Asian nations, Hiro also includes chapters on Turkey and Iran. These are both useful short histories in their own right, but unfortunately the Turkish chapter is mostly unrelated to Central Asia, other than a few paragraphs noting Turkey's limited influence. The Iranian chapter is much more relevant, with an insightful explanation of how shared fears over the rise of the radical Sunni Taliban led to rapprochement between the generally secular Central Asian countries and the strongly Shiite Iran.

While I found this work generally useful and readable, there are also some weaknesses. The writing quality is sometimes rather uneven and I got the impression that various parts of the book may have been written at different times, for different purposes. Especially in the chapter on Turkey, Hiro sometimes wanders off into strange side topics, such as the introduction of yogurt to 15th c. France. The two included maps are very weak (Kazakhstan's current capital is missing from both!).

But these quibbles aside, this is generally a very readable overview of the region. This is an area with a complex recent history, so having a single tightly written account is valuable.

『From a critically acclaimed author-a comprehensive history of the part of the world currently making headlines

The former Soviet republics of Central Asia comprise a sprawling, politically pivotal, densely populated, and richly cultured area of the world that is nonetheless poorly represented in libraries and mainstream media. Since their political incorporation in Stalin's Soviet era, these countries have gone through a flash of political and economical evolution. But despite these rapid changes, the growth of oil wealth and U.S. jockeying, and the opening of the region to tourists and businessmen, the spirit of Central Asia has remained untouched at its core.

In this comprehensive new treatment, renowned political writer and historian Dilip Hiro offers us a narrative that places the modern politics, peoples, and cultural background of this region firmly into the context of current international focus. Given the strategic location of Central Asia, its predominantly Muslim population, and its hydrocarbon and other valuable resources, it comes as no surprise that the five Central Asian republics are emerging in the twenty-first century as one of the most potentially influential-and coveted-patches of the globe.』
