(This one died after one year use)
『It works fine within one year since I purchased it in 2008. But died suddently after one year and one month use - powe can be on. We only can throw it away. Very disappoinited.』

(Worked fine for a year, then died.)
『We had this product for about 1.5 years where we had no real problems with the unit. It cooked adequately without much problems and very uniformly. However, one day we plugged it in and had no power to the unit.

There are no instructions for trying to fix the unit by yourself or solve this problem. The manual focuses on problems with food preparation using the unit, but has no instructions for overall power failure, so the only recourse you have is to throw it away and purchase another rice cooker.

Compared to my old rice cooker I've had since graduate school (10+ years now), not very reliable.』

(Not as good as I expected)
『The cover is not closed very tight. It spills out water when you cook the rice. I exchanged one, it still spills. I don't recommend this brand.』

(Wonderful!!!)
『I have put off buying a rice cooker for years and I am so sorry I did. This is wonderful---it's so easy, just add the rice and water close the lid and wait. It makes the best rice. It's very easy to clean. I would buy it again in a second and not wait so long.』

(Better than imagined)
『The Sanyo Rice Cooker is a far better product than I had anticipated. I was simply looking for a basic rice cooker which had a non-stick surface. Additionally I wanted to avoid cookers which had plastic in direct contact with the food being prepared.
This cooker provides far more options than I need, but I will certainly make use of them.』

(Terracotta warriors)
『I purchased two sets of these terracotta warrior replicas. The first set is for my aunt who saw the real warriors when she visited China. The second set is going to my fiance along with tickets to see a few of the actual warriors on display at the National Geographic Museum in Washington DC. We will be going next month for his birthday. I think the warriors are very nice and they are packaged in a lovely box. I am very pleased with the quality and the price.』

(Pentatonic Bluegrass!)
『I hope Chinese music lovers won't find the title of this review demeaning. The joy of listening to really good 'plucking' on an instrument like the pipa, in the hands of a master of his/her tradition, transcends all cultural boundaries. The pipa does in fact sound something like a banjo in timbre and a lot like a mandolin in playing technique. Track 5 on this CD, "Snow on a Sunny Spring Day," will definitely win the hearts and ears of bluegrass fans.

Chinese classical music, for an outsider like me, has a way of sounding very close to its folk roots while also obviously being very sophisticated in technique. The titles of the compositions on this CD, if the translations are accurate, clearly convey the spirit of the music, a contemplative rapture at the beauties of nature. The only previous reviewer found that spirit "soothing," but I find it more exhilarating - cheerful and open-faced.

This Explorer Series of recordings is a treasure trove of the very finest pre-pop-influenced music of many of the great and endangered classical traditions of world cultures. I've already reviewed two of the series - Music of Iran and Shakuhachi music. A listening comparison of this Chinese performance on pipa with the Japanese performance on shakuhachi is worth a whole college course in cultural diversity, as well as being a beautiful musical experience -- Confucian earthliness versus Zen other-worldliness. Lucky us! We get to hear the sounds of both!』

(Beautiful and Soothing...)
『That's the best way I can describe this wonderful music. It is great background music and very much enjoyable as one cooks, paints, meditates, or just relaxes. It is very pleasant to have when greeting guests for that Chinese meal you prepare. This music should be played in restaurants, instead of pop music (as many Chinese restaurants play pop). It would certainly be more inviting...』

(It's the Real Deal)
『From the first piece to the last on this CD, you can feel the throbbing , pulsating rhythm of the taiko drums. The energy is genuine, they don't try to make it more palatable to our western ears by dulcifying it with strings or synthesizers. Interspersed thru the drumming may be a flute or a bell, but that's it. This CD is the next best thing to watching a taiko ensemble performing live. It's not for everybody, but if you like percussion, purity of form, and appreciate the discipline required to produce such an intricate sound, this recording should be part of your collection.』

(What a joyous Taiko sound!)
『This is my FAVORITE Taiko CD to listen to as I travel. Soh Daiko is expressive, skilled, creative, and very talented. Plus, their music is crystal clear--I am a taiko player (founder of Mendocino County Taiko in California) and I was able to learn the basic kata for the song "Hiryu Sandan Gaeshi" just from listening to the CD. The fue playing is beautiful and melodic, and from hearing it I learned how to embellish my own playing on other songs. This CD includes Soh Daiko's version of several traditional taiko songs, so it is a great resource for players learning the basic melodies--and wanting to hear how they might be elaborated with skill and joyous energy.』
『Brand new digital recording of a virtuoso fifteen member Taiko ensemble playing the massive thundering traditional Taiko drums of Japan. With bamboo flute, conch shells, brass bells, gongs and other instruments. An incredible listening experience that is not to be missed!』

(A great CD of Balinese music)
『I don't know much about Balinese music, but I really enjoyed this CD. We had our honeymoon in Bali svereal years ago and I was searching for a CD that brought back memories of the music that we heard all around the island. This is a good CD from that perspective as it gives an excellent mix of Balinese music. You might find yourself adjusting the volume from time to time but otherwise it is fantastic.』

(Balinese anthology)
『This disc is a very clean recording of a variety of Balinese musical styles. I bought the disc because I enjoy gamelan music, but it includes much more than that. The liner notes provide comprehensive information on the musical styles represented and make interesting and instructive reading for a dilettante like myself. Some tracks are peaceful and contemplative, others are frenetic and energizing, but all are fascinating to hear. Highly recommended.』

(Beautifully Recorded Balinese Music)
『This recording is a treasure. It presents a wide variety of Balinese music, from a gamelan parade, through small group"chamber music"to the large ensemble music and even a smattering of Kecak. The music is all expertly played by a wide variety of gamelan ensembles, so you get a sampling of the subtle variety of this music. It is also the best engineered field recording that I've ever heard. Unlike many of the Lyrichord and early Nonesuch Explorer series Balinese recordings, this one is digital and doesn't sound as if it was recorded on a dictaphone. Particularly with Balinese music, this is important. You want to hear all the overtones of this magical music.

If you are curious about Balinese gamelan, or if you are an afficienado, this is an essential CD.』

(Great recording and music)
『This cd Music of Bali/Gamelan&Kecak is a pretty good cd for sure. There are different collection of musical styles from the very popular kebyar style which sprung up a few years after the puputan "mass suicide" by the royal families of Bali who opposed the Dutch for taking over the whole island, right through to the slow and mellow style of the Bali Aga's metallophones in track 5 which was pretty light and subtle in many aspects showing the diference between the well known Balinese gamelan. Also in this recording it also features the flute ensemble which was pretty mellow and beautiful however the style is pretty Balinese and sometimes reminding me of flute music from Cambodia. Kecak or Monkey chant also features in this album as well re-enacting stories from the Ramayana between the Monkey god Hanuman who has help Prince Rama rescue is wife Sita from the evil Ravana (Rawana). The Frog Song was a pretty enjoyable track because it mimic the frogs and shows how clever the Balinese are when it comes to nature. Gender Wayan used to accompany shadow theatre was pretty light, hazy and full of drive with the metallic ringing and shimmer of the metal bars as they are being struck creating a beautiful sound. The marching band in the first track sounded like the Chinese Lion dance orchestra used to celebrate Chinese New Year. The track nine was the Baris dance a warrior dance that is packed with sudden outburst of energy and style for sure. The cd also contains a booklet packed with information about the music and it's orchestra and as well as it's purpose. This cd is a good cd for sure... it has everything jam packed with different music styles from the well known kebyar to the rare and gamelan orchestra from Tenganan with the Bali Aga's metallophones. Pack with goodies I recommend it for anyone and for those who couldn't get enough of Balinese music... then this is for you...』

(ancient modern music)
『In his amazing book Ocean of Sound, David Toop opens with a chapter on the meeting of western composers (especially Debussy) with the sounds of the Indonesian Gamelan (which are essentially orchestras of various sizes). Situating the nexus of much modern music in this meeting by finding strains of these sounds in minimalists like Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and John Cage, but also stretching into the filmic realms of Ryuchi Sakamoto, the electronics of Loop Guru, and the Free Jazz of Don Cherry, just to name a few he cites, Toop indicates the range of influence of this amazing music. David Lewiston's 1987 recordings on this compilation jubiliantly reflect this diversity, even in the fascinating opening track of various ensembles passing by in a parade showcasing the sounds of cymbals, gongs, drums, flutes, metallophones, wooden cowbells, and countless other mostly percussive sounds. The rest of the tracks on the CD are equally varied. The third track, for example, Genggong Duet, takes place with the Balinese Jew's Harp, and could almost sound like the electronic squiggles of some electronic outfits like mouse on mars or matmos; the fourth track, a Frog Song which is produced through a piece of palm bark and sounds like a reed instrument, could pass for a free-jazz improvisation. Another exciting highlight would be the 8th track, a Kecak piece that tells the Indian Legend of Hanuman. Familiar to anyone whose seen the film Baraka, this is a piece where a large group sits in a circle, moving, swaying, and chanting, tjak tjak tajk, in furious rhythm. Like the Master Musicians of Jajouka, whom William Burroughs called a"2000 year old rock band,"this music sounds both ancient and progressive at the same time. An excellent introduction based on variety alone, but with digital recording, these sounds are surprisingly clean. For anyone curious about Balinese music, this would be a great place to start.』
『Recorded by David Lewiston in 1987, these are fine recordings of both famous and little-heard strains of Indonesian music. In a series of recordings that include both large gamelan orchestras and small ensembles, he has captured the wide scope of the music of Bali. In addition to the gamelan works we are offered some very unique sounds: a palm bark version of the Jew's harp; a reed instrument with a distinctly "Hendrix on the bagpipes" sound. Perhaps most enjoyable is a recording of a passing parade, with various instruments, rhythms, and melodies drifting by in the sort of cacophony associated with Charles Ive's marching band works. Lewiston's offering is invaluable.-- Louis Gibson

(Blu-ray edition is the best I've seen this look)
『I thought the picture quality of the bluray was beautiful, far better than the previous BU release (I won't even discuss the trauma release). Watching it on this disk was like seeing the film for the first time (not to mention how good it sounded). I came here expecting to see praises for the release, but instead I mainly see complaints about how grainy it looked.

I couldn't remember seeing any excessive grain, so I put the disk in again and still didn't see any problems. It was only when I moved 5 feet closer to the TV where I could see some grain, but even then it wasn't much and hardly enough to make the film unwatchable. I read online that part of this grain problem might be from people having the sharpness turned up on their TVs. Maybe someone who has complained about the gran could perhaps check this on their TV and see if the disk looks better with this turned off?

As long as Blue Underground continue to put out these high quality releases, I'll continue to double dip. I would recommend for anyone who is scared off by the reported problems to at least rent the disk and decide for themselves.』

(The Stendhal Syndrome)
『This, The Stendhal Syndrome was an absolute thriller with great performances. I would Highly Recommend this DVD giving it a full 5 Star Rating!!!』

(blu ray argento)
『This flick is not my favorite argento movie but that being said it's still a good movie. This is more of a psychological thriller and that may not please some argento fans who want a straight forward giallo or murder mystery. Asia argento is a excellent actress and she carries this movie as well. The blu ray edition is a better edition than the standard one however the blu ray process really brings out the grainy style of filming. The "evil dead 2" also is this grainy and it leads to a sparkle like effect that is only slightly distracting in some scenes. Perhaps on future blu ray releases the producers can tone down the grain if a movie utilized it as a technique in filming. Personally I have never been a fan of grainy filming it's not artistic it's just grainy. But the picture is crystal clear and the movie has never looked better so it's a proud addition to my horror collection. If you enjoy murder mysteries with a psycholical theme you may enjoy this movie but if you want a straight forward murder mystery you might be more happy with 'the bird with the crystal plumage" blu ray instead.』

(The Worst Quality Blu-ray ever!)
『I couldn't get through the first ten minutes because the quality was as if it was a DVD from the dollar store. The quality of this Blu-ray makes VHS look fabulous. I even wrote a letter to the company and got no response. I buy lots of Blu-rays and DVD's and I will NEVER buy one from this company again.』
『The first half of Dario Argento's heady psycho-thriller is a mesmerizing merging of dream and reality. A beautiful young Italian detective (Asia Argento, who does little to convince us she's a tough, seasoned cop) investigating a serial rapist is suddenly overwhelmed when the paintings in an art museum erupt with life. According to the film, this is "the Stendhal Syndrome," an intense and overwhelming response to art that turns the viewer mad. As Anna steps in and out of fantasy worlds like Alice through the looking glass, she's kidnapped by her quarry, who repeatedly rapes and tortures her in a dark, dank underground cave. The delirious nightmare of shattered reality becomes a sadistic, mean-spirited spectacle of murder and degradation--perpetrated on, of all people, the director's own bound and beaten daughter!--and the thriller disintegrates into a paranoid mystery of amnesia, split psyches, and shadowy phantoms. At its best this is a mesmerizing vision of madness: paintings melt into the real world while objectivity disintegrates before our eyes. But before the unexpectedly sensitive conclusion, Argento puts the viewer through a bravura but brutal series of gory murders (a slow-motion bullet passes through both cheeks of a helpless victim, and another shooting is viewed from inside the body) and unsavory violence. The poetic beauty ofPhenomenonand the craftsmanship ofSuspiriaandDeep Redare sorely missed.--Sean Axmaker
『When beautiful police detective Anna Manni follows the bloody trail of a sophisticated serial murderer/rapist through the streets of Italy the young woman falls victim to the bizarre Stendhal Syndrome a hallucinatory phenomenon which causes her to lose her mind and memory in the presence of powerful works of art. Trapped in this twilight realm Anna plunges deeper and deeper into sexual psychosis until she comes to know the killer s madness more intimately than she ever imagined.Horror maestro Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA OPERA) reaches new heights of florid fantasy and Grand Guignol with this warped work of art starring Maxim Magazine s Sexiest Woman in the World Asia Argento (LAND OF THE DEAD XXX) Thomas Kretschmann (KING KONG BLADE II) and Marco Leonardi (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN 3). Previously edited outside of Italy THE STENDHAL SYNDROME is now presented here in all its grotesque glory remastered in High Definition under the supervision of cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno (ALL THAT JAZZ AMARCORD) from the original Italian 35mm interpositive and loaded with exclusive new Extras in this 2-Disc Special Edition.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR UPC: 827058201490 Manufacturer No: BU2014』

(Sex in the City)
『"Pleasure Factory (Kuaile Gongchang)"

Sex in the City

Amos Lassen

Singapore's Red Light District, Geylang, was once an area where coconuts were processed in the many factories that were there. Now it is an area of brothels where pimps attempt to see the goods. Not a lot of talking is exchanged in Geylang (and in this movie) and we see a lot of extremely beautiful imagery in a very seedy part of town.
"Pleasure Factory" is made up of three stories. The first is the tale of a young man in the army who wants to lose his virginity and decides that the best way to do so with an experienced "lady of the night". Jonathan (Loo Zihan who also co-directed the film), an army boy seems not quite ready for sex but his friend, Kiat (Katashi Chen) eggs him on and he decides to use the services and charms of a buxom Chinese girl, This is perhaps the most successful of the three stories. We clearly see and understand the emotions involved and the humor is quite good. We learn about desire, love and how one deals with virginity.
The second story is about a prostitute in her 40's and her daughter and a male client and the focus of this story is the mother-daughter relationship.
Finally in the third story we meet a hooker from mainland China who pays for a street singer to come to her house so she can hear a special song.
Shot either is very dim light or with too much neon, the movie is not easy on the eyes and this made the film hard to follow. It has somewhat of a documentary feel to it but was lacking in both metaphor and emotion. I found it also to be a bit shallow and all in all a bit weak.

(47 Ronin review)
『This is the most cerebral version of this story that I have seen. It eschews the action seen in other versions and focuses on mood and character. I find it superior to those other versions which devote much time to the assault on Kira's home. The film moves slowly, building to the second half of part 2 which is memorable and moving. It is a film that rewards the patient viewer. This movie has been difficult to find in a clear version and while the images are a little soft the subtitles in yellow (while not always in perfect English) are very easy to read.』

(another view)
『This classic Japanese tale born of truth is endlessly fascinating. I have collected several different versions of this story from different directors. Although I must admit my favorite version is the 1962 "Chushingura The Loyal 47 Retainers" often called the Gone With the Wind of Japan. The scope and color really pull you in. This version may harbor subtle motivational elements but is compelling in it's own way.』

(Bright News From A Dark Valley)
『Although classified as a "samurai movie", Kenji Mizoguchi's brooding take on the tale of the forty-seven warriors who choose to commit hara-kiri rather than succumb to the disgrace of losing their clan title is anything but all-action. Although instructed by the military to make an aggressive warlike film, the master director opts for an awe-inspiring display of pure cinema, replete with classy, ultra-long takes and an air of slow-burning doom probably unmatched in cinema history.

It is indeed the way the story is filmed that is most breathtaking. Never has a film so perfectly paired up its thematic concerns with the style in which these themes are presented. The scenes in the film are rarely under five minutes each, with the camera relentlessly prowling around via tracking and boom shots. Furthermore, it says so much about its director that the long spaces between cuts are not obvious because of their unobtrusive nature. Instead, we are drawn into the story of the honourable ronin, who inhabit a world totally different from out own. Japanese audiences in 1941 found the film a little too different from their own world, as reflected in the poor performance at the box office.

The film forms part of a trilogy of totalitarian films about sacrifice, along with Eisenstein's "Alenander Nevsky (1938) and the Nazi film "Kolberg" (1945): but in reality the "47 Ronin" is head and shoulders above both of these. Indeed, "47 Ronin" is one of the great masterpieces of world cinema, and awaits rediscovery.

DVD notes: Not a great transfer on this Korean DVD, but the film is in its intact (three hours forty-one minutes) form, and has full English subtitles.』

『Don't expect the blood-and-thunder adventure of Akira Kurosawa's samurai tales in this take on the legendary 18th century story. Loyal samurai plot righteous revenge on the scheming official responsible for the dishonor and execution of their honorable samurai Lord, yet Kenji Mizoguchi's elegant epic is a film of confrontation through ceremony, plots concealed in veils of political feints, and vengeance patiently delayed until honor can be satisfied. Such introspective drama may frustrate viewers anticipating adrenaline-fueled combat--even the climactic battle is communicated entirely in the breathless reading of a gripping dispatch--and they might prefer Hiroshi Inagaki's more visceral 1962 Chushingura. The drama of Mizoguchi's film is in the restrained poise of warriors reigning in their instinct to attack, the arched eyebrows of cunning politicians playing games of brinkmanship over tea, and the flowing camerawork and measured pacing of Mizoguchi's handsome style. --Sean AxmakerRenowned by postwar scholars, "The 47 Ronin" is director Kenji Mizoguchi's (Ugetsu) poetic and complex retelling of the classic Japanese legend. Unseen in America until the 1970s, "The 47 Ronin" is a visually stunning work based on "Mayama Chushingura," a cerebral play dealing with the tale of the loyal samurai.』

(Shipping is Way Overpriced)
『Shipping is way overpriced for this item. I can get a similar product at efooddepot for a flat $4.99 no matter how many bags I order. Here I get charged for each bag, even though they will go in the same shipment. I think they should revisit their shipping charge mechanism. I placed an order for 6, and the shipping turned out to be $15.99. I just looked at the shipping tracker and it says it will take almost two months to get to me via USPS. Doesn't sound like priority shipping to me, so they are making a bundle from shipping. I'm waiting to see if they appropriately bundle my order, and if they do, I will return with a positive review on how well they manage their shipping prices.』

『I purchased this book because of price and I wanted to know more about the Terra Cotta Warriors. The book is lovely, great production values, but primarily a picture book and tells very little about the dig, its history and about the statues themself.』

(Terra Cotta Warriors)
『I love this book, it is a small version of these amazing figures and fabulous story of China's First Emperor. Wonderful pictures and great information.』
『Often described as the eighth Wonder of the World, the massive, underground army made from fired clay evokes both awe and curiosity. Who was this powerful Emperor of the Qin Dynasty who needed these warriors to guard him in the afterlife? How were nearly 8,000 figures made on such a vast scale so long ago?

This lovely little book, based on the latest research, brings the terra cotta warriors to life in 52 astonishing images. Like the millions of visitors to the on-site museum who see the figures in person, readers will marvel at the cavalry, archers, and infantry; lowly foot soldiers and high-ranking officers; figures of varying ages, with different hairstyles and unique facial expressions, seemingly representing many ethnic groups in China.

The soldiers are spread across a number of pits at the tomb site, on the outskirts of present-day Xi’an, where new discoveries are made every year. Archaeologists predict that it may take longer to excavate the First Emperor’s tomb complex than the approximately thirty-six years it took to build it, as new techniques of conservation and scientific research are introduced. Though the tombwas known from Chinese written record for thousands of years, there was no record of the terra cotta army. The surprise of this discovery still endures, and mounts with each page turned.』

(Saved me a trip.)
『I know I will never be able to visit India, so my "trip" comes from books. Dalrymple is a great tour guide. He took me places that I wouldn't have been able to visit even if I flew to Delhi today.

The people he met and described were as fascinating as the places he explored. This book is a combination of history, tourism, mini-biography, human interest, archeology and anthropology. The mix was well balanced and Dalrymple's writing ability made the entire book entertaining as well as educational.

Please do not let the age of this book dissuade you from reading it. Dalrymple's take on Delhi will still be worth the read for as long as people read.

My only gripe (worth a tenth of a star) was with the only map. Though nicely drawn by his wife, it was nearly useless. A more inclusive map would have added a tremendous amount to my enjoyment.』

(Read while visiting India)
『Dalrymple writes wonderfully. I read this while visiting Delhi, and it made me want to find all those places he described - many of which are off the beaten track. Dalrymple, a true historian, uncovers a whole other India beneath what regular tourists see. Both his discoveries as well as the reflections on his own life woven in are fascinating. I highly recommend this book, and I even more so recommend reading it while travelling in India, as it will fully allow you to appreciate "City of Djinns".』

(Excellent book to get a glimpse of Delhi's history)
『I loved reading all the three books by this author - The last Mughal, The White Mughal and City of Djinns. Unlike the other two, City of Djinns , is a little fast paced, more readable and is not as much detailed. If you have lived in Delhi and wondered about its history or a tourist heading for Delhi, you will look at things differently if you have read this book. The book is so readable that I would have liked more details especially Mughal and pre-Mughal history. Overall this is a great book.』

(Fantastic travel writing)
『The first thing that is incredibly interesting about this book is the way it is approached. To call it a travel book, I feel, is diminishing the many other aspects&experiences this book is about.

This book is kind of a diary of Dalrymple&wife's year in Delhi. And it is also a book of history scattered behind the sights, the people,&the culture. Dalrymple narrates compellingly, candidly, without biases&with plentiful humour. Stories abound - of the destitute but historically cultured 'old Delhi-wallahs'&the loutish Punjabi nouveau rich, of Anglo-Indians living in reminisce&poverty, of the Delhi eunuchs, of Dervishes that speak in parables, of partridge fights, of khalifas, of Balwinder Singh's buoyancy&lust, of Mr&Mrs Puri's idiosyncrasies.

And while you're drifting from one of these interludes to the other, you're taken centuries back to the Kingdom of Shah Jehan, Aurangzeb's treachery&network of spies, of incest in Royal Harems, of Englishmen who smoked hookahs - some who became Indian in their ways beyond recognition, some who continued their English ways, of the partition, of Tughlak's barbaric ways, of the refined mannerisms of a mirza during the Mughal period, of the Red Fort&what lies beneath.

Dalrymple is also an astute recorder of conversations. Some of the 'Indian English' that is spoken is in such sharp contrast to Dalrymple's speech, that you cannot help but get tickled. However, I do not think that Dalrymple's intention is mockery for there are plentiful other examples to the contrary.

I definitely learned&relearned a lot from this book. I also developed a sense of Delhi's history&a empathy for it's present. And I smiled a lot.』

『I lived in Delhi for just under a year in the eighties, and if I had had this book then, it would have been a completely different experience for me. I walked by so much history in puraani delhi, and understood little of its significance. When I return to Delhi, this book will light my way into Mughal, British and Sufi Delhi.

I agree with another reviewer that Dalrymple says relatively little about Hindu Delhi, but I think Delhi is one of the most historically cosmopolitan of cities in a subcontinent that is often painted as Hindu in broad strokes. I hope no reader takes as disrespect when I say that Hindu India gets plenty of attention; I am glad that Dalrymple focused on what cultural roads are less traveled. He does tell, and beautifully so, the story of the role of Delhi's ancestral settlement in the Mahabharata.

What I loved most about the book was its portrayal of the vibrant Sufi community in India; the life of a Sufi dargah; the Qawwali singers. Learning about Sufi Delhi was a great and valuable revelation to me.』

『Sparkling with irrepressible wit,City of Djinnspeels back the layers of Delhi's centuries-old history, revealing an extraordinary array of characters along the way-from eunuchs to descendants of great Moguls. With refreshingly open-minded curiosity, William Dalrymple explores the seven "dead" cities of Delhi as well as the eighth city-today's Delhi. Underlying his quest is the legend of the djinns, fire-formed spirits that are said to assure the city's Phoenix-like regeneration no matter how many times it is destroyed. Entertaining, fascinating, and informative,City of Djinnsis an irresistible blend of research and adventure.』

(For anybody even remotely interested in India)
『Fantastic assessment of India. Economics, history, politics, it's all here. Beyond economics, an insightful account of the politics of caste, the up to date assessment of the Kashmir issue, and glimpse into the failures and achievements of the state. The book is a journalist's account, not an attempt to provide in-depth, economic or political examination. You will enjoy his brilliant writing style and natural curiosity about a place that is so rich despite being so poor.』

(PhD thesis by an elementary student)
『Couple of disclaimers first. I have spent three fourth of my life in India and rest outside learning about other cultures. I met a wonderful American couple on the plane on my way to India and they recommended the book as a true window to India. I read the book and frankly felt very sorry for the couple and India alike because this book is like "an elementary school essay that claims to be written by an expert".

The book is really short on the facts and shockingly full of opinions. I don't recommend that you do not read the book but if you indeed decide on reading the book, please keep in mind that you are reading a medley of fiction, fantasy, opinion with some facts and truth sprinkled on it. To give you an example IN SPITE of having an Indian for a wife Mr. Luce can't get even THE GODS and their function in India mythology right.

The best way to describe this book - as "authentic" as ethnic food at an airport, or an "authentic" cultural experience at a tourist trap.』

(Eye-opening account of modern India)
『getAbstract recommends this excellent, well-written work of reportage on India. Edward Luce provides a colorful, striking picture of the country and its unconventional path to development. Within the past several years, numerous books have been published about so-called "Chindia," the phenomenon of the economic emergence of the two most populous nations on earth. Luce makes it very clear that categorizing India with any other place, including the ever-intriguing China, is probably analytical and intellectual sloth. India presents such overwhelming, bewildering complexity that onlookers must take it on its own unique terms.』

(Very Apt Title - India Rises Really In Spite of Itself)
『I picked up this book on a lark. I only have a passing interest in India. I read a few pages and I was hooked. For someone with almost no knowledge of India, this book was an extremely engaging introduction to the "functioning anarchy" that is India. Edward Luce focuses on the problems of modern India, its burdensome bureaucracy, endemic corruption, outbreaks of religious conflicts, the stubborn legacy of castes, but only as the backdrop to India's remarkable rise as a global power. One of the best books I've read recently!』

(Dull and superficial.)
『Yes, you can learn about the "big picture" details of modern India through this mediocre book, but why wade through connect-the-dot tedium by an outsider and not read someone like Fareed Zakaria instead? The entire book reads like a hybrid of a fluffy, meandering journalistic piece and merely competent research. The stories are not particularly interesting and the characters walk around as cliches. Makes for a dull read.』
『As the world's largest democracy and a rising international economic power, India has long been heralded for its great strides in technology and trade. Yet it is also plagued by poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and a vast array of other social and economic issues.

Here, noted journalist and formerFinancial TimesSouth Asia bureau chief Edward Luce travels throughout India's many regions, cultures, and religious circles, investigating its fragile balance between tradition and modernity. From meetings with key political figures to fascinating encounters with religious pundits, economic gurus, and village laborers,In Spite of the Godsis a fascinating blend of analysis and reportage that comprehensively depicts the nuances of India's complex situation and its place in the world.』
